Both genetic and environmental influences have been implicated in the etiology of atopic disease and in the determination of serum IgE levels. To quantify the relative contribution of these influences, we studied the prevalence of asthma and seasonal rhinitis, skin-test response, total serum IgE levels, and specific IgE, as measured by RAST, in a sample of MZ and DZ twins reared apart or together. Concordance rates for asthma, rhinitis, positive skin tests, and RAST were calculated. MZ twins, whether reared apart or together, showed a greater concordance than dizygotic twins reared apart or together. Maximum-likelihood tests of genetic and environmental components of the variation of total IgE levels revealed a substantial genetic component and a negligible contribution from common familial environmental effects. 相似文献

Genetic and environmental correlations among five serum-lipid measures were examined in the Swedish Adoption/Twin Study of Aging. The sample included 302 twin pairs; 146 of these twin pairs were separated at an early age and were reared apart. The lipid measures examined include total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoproteins A-I and B. Genetic and environmental correlations were evaluated for two different age groups, formed by dividing the sample at the median. The younger group included individuals 41.8-65.4 years of age at the midpoint of testing, although only 24 individuals were < 50 years of age. The older group included all those > 65.4 years of age, up to age 87 years of age. Substantial genetic correlations were found within each age group, although there is no evidence for a single genetic factor common to all five lipids. The comparison of twins reared together with twins reared apart allowed estimation of the effects of shared rearing environment; however, shared rearing environment only appears to be a significant mediator of the phenotypic correlation between apolipoprotein B and cholesterol in the older group. Examination of the genetic and environmental covariances suggests that the relative contributions of genetic factors are lower in the older group. Nonshared environmental factors are relatively more important mediators of phenotypic correlations among the serum lipids in individuals > 65.4 years of age than they are for the younger group. Sex differences in the mediation of these serum lipids were not as clear. 相似文献

We carried out two studies to test the hypothesis that genetic and environmental influences explain population group differences in general mental ability just as they do individual differences within a group. We estimated the heritability and environmentality of scores on the diagrammatic puzzles of the Raven's Coloured and/or Standard Progressive Matrices (CPM/SPM) from two independent twin samples and correlated these estimates with group differences on the same items. In Study 1, 199 pairs of 5- to 7-year-old monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twins reared together provided estimates of heritability and environmentality for 36 puzzles from the CPM. These estimates correlated with the differences between the twins and 94 Serbian Roma (both rs=0.32; Ns=36; ps<0.05). In Study 2, 152 pairs of adult MZ and DZ twins reared apart provided estimates of heritability and environmentality for 58 puzzles from the SPM. These estimates correlated with the differences among 11 diverse samples including (i) the reared-apart twins, (ii) another sample of Serbian Roma, and (iii) East Asian, White, South Asian, Coloured and Black high school and university students in South Africa. In 55 comparisons, group differences were more pronounced on the more heritable and on the more environmental items (mean rs=0.40 and 0.47, respectively; Ns=58; ps<0.05). After controlling for measurement reliability and variance in item pass rates, the heritabilities still correlated with the group differences, although the environmentalities did not. Puzzles found relatively difficult (or easy) by the twins were those found relatively difficult (or easy) by the others (mean r=0.87). These results suggest that population group differences are part of the normal variation expected within a universal human cognition. 相似文献

Life history data, attractiveness ratings of male photographs, and attitudes towards partnership and child-rearing of 321 women were used to test four evolutionary models (quantitative reproductive strategy, male short-age, polygyny indication, and maternal reproductive interests) which attempt to explain the influence of family composition on reproductive strategies. Links between early menarche and other markers of reproductive strategy were investigated. Childhood stress and absence of a father figure, whether genetically related or not, were found to have accelerated menarche whereas having younger siblings decelerated it. Early menarche was associated with attractiveness ratings, the number of partners desired for the immediate future, and the early onset of intimate relationships. It was not linked with sociosexual orientation, mate choice criteria, and investment in the subjects’ own children, but these three markers were interrelated. The implications of the findings for the four evolutionary models are discussed. 相似文献

Paternal investment theory and psychosocial acceleration theory hold that father absence and stressful experiences, respectively, accelerate reproductive development. Accumulating evidence is consistent with these theories yet important questions remain. In this study, we use a two-part structural equation model and data from 342 female undergraduates to address two of these questions: First, what is the role of father absence in female psychosocial acceleration, controlling potentially confounding aspects of environment and family structure? Second, to what extent does age at menarche mediate environmental and family structure effects on sexual debut? Findings indicated that many aspects of environment and family structure could be summarized with two factors—socio-economic status (SES) and fragmented family structure. We found that among those who had experienced sexual debut, exposure to temporary father departure (one year or more) in the context of an intact family hastened menarche, which in turn accelerated sexual debut. However, this type of father absence did not predict experience of sexual debut (or not). Fragmented family structure (which also implies some degree of father absence) appeared to increase the likelihood that participants had experienced sexual debut, but did not predict age at menarche or age at sexual debut among who had debuted. SES was not associated with any aspects of reproductive development, controlling for fragmented family structure and age. We discuss our findings in relation to paternal investment theory, psychosocial acceleration theory, and life history theory. We then lay out future directions for researchers aiming to clarify the role of environment in reproductive trajectories. 相似文献

Puberty, the transition from childhood to adult body size and sexual maturity, is a complex multi-staged process involving growth acceleration, weight gain and the appearance of secondary sexual physical features over a 2- to 3-year period. Recent genome-wide association (GWA) studies for age at menarche, the onset of the first menstrual period in girls, have identified the first common genetic variants to be robustly associated with pubertal timing. The findings indicate a novel link between microRNA pre-processing and the timing of whole organism growth and development. Our studies also demonstrate that the use of easily measured phenotypic markers, such as age at menarche in girls, in GWA studies can uncover genetic variants with wider relevance to more complex phenotypes, such as pubertal onset and the tempo of growth in both sexes. 相似文献

Data from approximately 600 U.S. women were analyzed for seasonality in menarche. Data were converted to the ratio of observed (O) to expected (E) cases, based on an equal distribution of events over the year, per considered time span of the year. The greatest O/E ratio in menarche (1.55) occurred during January, followed by August (1.43) and July (1.24). The lowest O/E ratio in menarche occurred in February and May (0.68). Seasonal patterns in menarche were detected for the separate cohorts of women born during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, with a shift from a December-January peak in menarche for those born in the 1940s and 1950s to an August-September peak for those born in the 1960s. Girls who were younger (8-14 yrs) at menarche exhibited a seasonal difference in the peak number of menarches by about 6 months in comparison to the pattern for girls who were older (15-17 yrs). Girls who experienced menarche during August-October were statistically significantly younger (p less than 0.05) than those born during the other three seasons. Season of birth was not statistically significantly associated with season of menarche. Overall, no 12-month pattern was substantiated by cosinor analysis in the month of menarche. However, a 6-month rhythm was detected in menarche for women born between 1940 and 1960 (p = 0.004, A = 29% M, phi = January and July). 相似文献

The geographical distribution of age at menarche in great Britain is analysed in two successive generations. It appears that the variances for age at menarche are equal throughout the country. The means, however, show significant and complicated patterns of regional variation. In the southern and eastern parts of the country, menarche was earlier than in the northern parts in both generations. This patterning is not due to social class differentiation. Except for the sparsely populated areas in northern and western Scotland and for the extreme south-western parts of England and Wales all areas show evidence of a decline in age at menarche from the mothers' to the daughters' generation. 相似文献

Body mass index (BMI) is widely used as an index of obesity in people from the school age children to adults. However, the relationship between the change in BMI with age and the coming of menarche has not been discussed as there are few reports on the changes in BMI with age. In this study, the change in BMI with age was examined by applying the wavelet interpolation method (WIM), and a critical period for body fat in terms of the coming of menarche was estimated from the growth velocity. We investigated delayed menarche according to the influence of stress in athletes by comparing delayed menarche between athletes and non-athletes in relation to the critical period. Data were obtained from 144 female athletes in their first year at university in the Tokai area, all of whom had competed in a national sports competition in high school (athlete group). Health examination records showing these subjects' heights and weights from the first grade of elementary school to the final year of high school (1984-1995) were collected and BMI was calculated for each grade. Ages at menarche were ascertained from questionnaires. A control group of 73 non-athletes was similarly examined. The age at maximum peak velocity (MPV) derived from the growth (aging) distance curve of BMI was determined in the control group to be 11.96+/-0.97 years old. This age at MPV of BMI was almost the same as the age at menarche (12.11+/-0.93 years old). Therefore, this age at MPV of BMI is estimated to be the critical period of body fat for the coming of menarche. The interval between the age at MPV of BMI and age at menarche was 0.74+/-1.30 years in the athlete group and 0.15+/-0.81 years in the control group, so there was a significant difference (P<0.01) between the two groups. It is suggested that the delayed menarche in athletes is influenced by the stress of regular sports training. 相似文献

All 8th-form schoolgirls from the municipality of Odense in Denmark were asked at what age they reached menarche, and 886 girls (97.6%) gave this information. There is no evidence for seasonality in the time of birth but for far more girls than expected menarche occurred during winter or summer and fewer than expected during spring and autumn. This pattern appears primarily in girls living in the suburbs and was not seen in those living in central Odense. The seasonality appears to be brought about by differences in mean age at menarche according to time of the year at birth. 相似文献

The impact of maternal age at menarche on newborn size was tested using data from 4,996 single births taking place at Vienna, Austria, between 1985 and 1995--so-called teenager pregnancies were excluded from the present analyses. All women experienced pregnancies between the ages of 19 to 42 years. Maturational time was related significantly to infant weight and length independent of maternal age and behavioral variables such as smoking. Early maturation, i.e., age at menarche before the 12th birthday, was significantly associated with decreased newborn weight and size. The incidence of low-weight newborns was significantly higher in early-maturing mothers. The more favorable nutritional status of women whose menarche occurred relatively early was not able to compensate for the negative effects of early maturation on intrauterine growth. Higher circulating estrogen levels in early maturers preserved into adulthood are discussed as possible reasons for intrauterine growth retardation of the offspring of early-maturing mothers. 相似文献

The possible effects of migration and socio-economic status (SES) on age at menarche (MENA), age at menopause (MENO), potential reproductive period (PRP), and the correlation between MENA and MENO, were studied in 216 women in the Yucatan, Mexico. They were divided into three groups: migrant from the sisal-growing area on the coast, and sisal and coastal sedentary. Coastal sedentary women, living in the best socio-economic conditions, have the youngest MENA and the oldest MENO. Early migrant women have a significantly younger MENO (p.<0.05) and shorter PRP than Coastal sedentary women. There was no evidence of selective migration for MENA. When the Migrant, Sisal and Coastal sample were divided into cohorts by SES, it was impossible to obtain any clear picture. MENA increases with increased SES for the Coastal and Sisal cohorts, while the Migrant cohorts show an opposite trend. However, only the Low/Middle and High/Middle cohort differences for the Coastal sample are significant (p.<0.05, in both cases). It seems that migration has a limited affect on MENO and the PRP. Contrary to reports in the literature, the correlations between MENA and MENO and migrant status, and migrant socio-economic statuses, are negative, although these correlations were statistically significant in the Coastal sample. 相似文献

and true associations may have been overlooked. Incorporating biologically relevant information, we examined whether common
genetic polymorphisms in candidate genes of nine groups of biologically plausible pathways and related phenotypes are associated
with age at menarche and age at natural menopause. A total of 18,862 genotyped and imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms
(SNPs) in 278 genes were assessed for their associations with these two traits among a total of 24,341 women from the Nurses’
Health Study (NHS, N = 2,287) and the Women’s Genome Health Study (WGHS, N = 22,054). Linear regression was used to assess the marginal association of each SNP with each phenotype. We adjusted for
multiple testing within each gene to identify statistically significant SNP associations at the gene level. To evaluate the
overall evidence for an excess of statistically significant gene associations over the proportion expected by chance, we applied
a one-sample test of proportion to each group of candidate genes. The steroid-hormone metabolism and biosynthesis pathway
was found significantly associated with both age at menarche and age at natural menopause (P = 0.040 and 0.011, respectively). In addition, the group of genes associated with precocious or delayed puberty was found

The divergence in height velocity of early and late maturing girls in early adolescence is exploited to predict menarcheal age from a year's growth in height. Simple prediction equations are generated based on data from the Berkely Guidance Study, and are subsequently tested against an independent sample from the Stuart Growth Study. The success of this prediction method compares favorably with others based on x-ray determinations of bone age; it is much more successful than a proposed method that utilizes estimations of body fat. The height increment method is recommended both by its simplicity and by the relative accessability of the information involved. 相似文献

Age at menarche is associated with anthropometry in adolescence. Recently, there has been growing support for the hypothesis that timing of menarche may be set early in life but modified by changes in body size and composition in childhood. To evaluate this, a cohort of 255 girls aged <5 years recruited in 1988 were followed up in 2001 in Matlab, Bangladesh. The analysis was based on nutritional status as assessed by anthropometry and recalled age at menarche. Data were examined using lifetable techniques and the Cox regression model. The association between nutritional status indicators and age at menarche was examined in a multivariate model adjusting for potential confounding variables. Censored cases were accounted for. The median age at menarche was 15.1 years. After controlling for early-life predictors (birth size, childhood underweight, childhood stunting) it appeared that adolescent stunting stood out as the most important determinant of age at menarche. Adolescent stunting still resonates from the effect of stunting in early childhood (OR respectively 2.63 (p<0.01 CI: 1.32-5.24) and 8.47 (p<0.001 CI: 3.79-18.93) for moderately and severely stunted under-fives as compared with the reference category). Birth size was not a significant predictor of age at menarche. It is concluded that age at menarche is strongly influenced by nutritional status in adolescence, notably the level of stunting, which is in turn highly dependent on the level of stunting in early childhood. A 'late' menarche due to stunting may be detrimental for reproductive health in case of early childbearing because of the association between height and pelvic size. 相似文献

Several studies have found relationships between early life factors (birth weight, length of gestation, height, weight, duration of breast-feeding, maternal age, social class, periods of infection, presence of adverse life events, and quality of housing conditions in childhood) and age at menarche but none has considered all of these factors in the same study. The follow-up study of the Newcastle Thousand Families birth cohort, established in 1947, provided age at menarche data collected retrospectively at age 50 from 276 women who returned self-completion questionnaires in 1997. Three main independent associations were observed: girls who experienced a shorter gestation, girls whose mothers were younger when they were born, and girls who were heavier at age 9 had earlier menarche. Birth weight, standardized for gestational age, was found to have different relationships with age at menarche depending upon how heavy or light a girl was at age 9. The results of this study support the hypotheses that conditions in fetal and early life are associated with the timing of menarche and that greater childhood growth is associated with earlier menarche. It is suggested that future work should focus on illuminating the mechanisms underlying these statistical relationships. 相似文献
