In Lake Albert Daphnia lumholtzi is found in two forms. One has a pointed anterior prolongation, or helmet, on the head. The other has a shorter rounded head, and was originally described as a separate species, D. monacha . The latter form dominates the zooplankton in the middle of the lake where planktivorous fish are rare or absent. The helmeted form becomes commoner near the margins of the lake and reaches its greatest abundance in Ndaiga Lagoon, where planktivorousfish are common. The possession of a helmet is associated with a reduction in the size of the carapace compared to the round headed form. The carapace with its contained eggs is the most conspicuous part of a cladoceran, so that the helmeted forms are at an advantage in the presence of planktivorous fish which locate their prey by sight. The mid-lake monacha forms are larger than specimens of the same form in Ndaiga Lagoon, where it is shown that Alestes baremose feeds selectively on the larger specimens of the monacha form.
The helmeted form produces more, but smaller eggs than the monacha form. The total brood volume (= mean egg volume x mean number eggs per female) is greatest in the midlake monacha forms. The selective advantages of variations in egg size and the possession of a helmet are discussed. It is concluded that the data from Lake Albert support the hypothesis of Brooks (1965) concerning the adaptive significance of helmet development in Daphnia .  相似文献

Plankton samples for rotifers were collected by means of vertical hauls with phytoplankton nets at eight stations on Lake Albert during the course of a year. Similar hauls were taken from Lakes Kyoga, Victoria, George and Edward in October and November. The rotifers found in the samples are listed and some estimates of their abundance and seasonal occurrence in Lake Albert are given. The most important planktonic rotifers are Keratella tropica and several species of Brachionus . Other species may also become locally or temporarily abundant; Lecane bulla becomes numerous in samples taken near vegetation after disturbance by rough weather, or where blue-green algae are abundant.
The associations of rotifers at the stations on Lake Albert and in the other lakes have been compared by means of the Sorensen Index and the index of diversity. The highest diversity is found in situations with a high rate of flow, as at the mouth of the Victoria Nile, where the extra species are non-planktonic forms swept into suspension by the current. This high diversity is associated with low numbers of individuals per unit volume. In Lake Albert rotifers are most consistently present and abundant at the mouth of the River Semliki, where the rate of flow is moderated by a large reed swamp. The middle of Lake Albert is poor in rotifers, and this may be related to the sparseness of planktivorous fish coupled with competitive elimination of the rotifers by larger crustacean zooplankters.
The associations of rotifers in Lakes Kyoga and George are similar, and resemble one another more than they resemble the associations in their neighbouring deeper lakes. The association in Lake Kyoga also resembles the associations found in water of a similar depth at the northern end of Lake Albert.  相似文献

Resting eggs produced by daphnid species in response to environmental deterioration play an important role in colonizing new habitats or in re‐establishing extinct populations. Females lay resting eggs into the space within the dorsal part of their carapace and form an egg case called the ephippium to protect them. Previous studies mainly reported the morphology of the completely formed ephippium and/or the forming ephippium of an uncertain stage. To understand ephippium formation and to clarify key transitions in the formation of resting eggs, we examined the structure and formation of the ephippium in the water flea Daphnia pulex De Geer (Cladocera: Daphniidae) by stereomicroscopy, histology, and scanning electron microscopy. The females used in this study produced resting eggs by obligate parthenogenesis. We divided ephippium formation into four stages based on two molts and a single ovulation, as follows. Stage I begins 13 min after molting in adult females that do not ovulate. In Stage II, immediately after the first molt, a protuberance appears beneath the neck region and the carapace begins to thicken. In Stage III, the resting eggs ovulate and the carapace in the area of the forming ephippium becomes much thicker than the normal carapace and accumulates dark pigmentation. In Stage IV, following the second molt, the female sheds the ephippium with the enclosed resting eggs and forms a new carapace. These stages will provide a useful reference for future studies on resting egg formation. J. Morphol. 275:760–767, 2014. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

1. Daphnia ambigua were reared individually with eight different concentrations of a chemical extract from larvae of Chaohorus flavicans, and the frequency of appearance of helmeted individuals and the helmet sizes were determined in the instars 1–6. 2. The animals developed most marked helmets in the second instar in response to the extract. The frequency of the helmeted individuals and helmet size in the second instar increased with increasing chemical concentration, although their dose-response curves differed between them. 3. The results may explain the cyclomorphosis of Daphnia, which develop the highest helmets in summer, when the predators are abundant and active, and the concentrations of the predator-released chemicals would presumably be high. 4. The extract became toxic to Daphnia at the highest concentration prepared.  相似文献

For three consecutive years, a population study of Daphnia pulicaria was undertaken in Río Seco Lake, a small high-mountain lake, in order to elucidate the reproductive strategies adopted by Daphnia in this system. Daphnia appears to colonize this lake every spring by hatching from ephippia and reproduce by means of subitaneous (non-diapausing) and ephippial (diapausing) eggs. D. pulicaria in this lake is an obligate parthenogenetic population. There is a short time period for subitaneous egg production and a much longer period for ephippial egg production. The contribution of subitaneous eggs to Daphnia population density and structure appears to be low. Diapause onset showed a high temporal synchronization in the three studied years in Río Seco Lake, and day-length emerged as the main cue triggering diapause onset and the main explanatory factor for the proportion of ephippial females observed. The development and reproduction of D. pulicaria in Río Seco Lake involves taking a gamble on resting forms to guarantee inter-annual Daphnia persistence in the lake, giving priority to investment in future generations. SUMMARY. The food of 0+ perch, Perca fluviatilis L. has been investigated in Windermere, the largest lake in the English Lake District. Whole guts and stomachs from 800 fish were investigated during four 24-h periods between June and September in 1975 and in 1976. Ciliates, algae, rotifers and cyclopoid nauplii constituted the first food of larval perch in Windermere. Vertical samples were taken from the zooplankton, at the same time and in the same location where the fish were sampled, and the concentration of the different food organisms studied. Electivity of the different food organisms was studied from lvlev's index, which showed positive electivity, or selection for some organisms, e.g. Bosmina obtusirostris (Sars.) and copepods (both cyclopoid and calanoid), and negative for others such as Daphnia hyalina var. galeata (Sars.), Leptodora kindti (Focke) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Leydig). In studying predatorprey relationships, Daphnia hyalina was chosen as the 'standard prey', being the most abundant of all food organisms in the diet of young perch, also because its maximum body-depth (carapace width (mm)) was among the largest of the cladocera and copepods in Windermere. Comparison of the maximum carapace width of Daphnia eaten with that of the plankton revealed that smaller specimens were taken by juvenile perch in July, but they tended to select larger organisms during August and September.  相似文献

The pelagic communities of two contrasting oligotrophic lakes in British Columbia were studied to determine why an interior, dimictic lake (Quesnel) supports a greater biomass of zooplankton and produces larger planktivorous sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) than a coastal warm-monomictic lake (Sproat). The ultra-oligotrophic status and differing planktivore densities in Sproat Lake increased the relative importance of algal picoplankton, diminished the abundance of large zooplankton, and increased the significance of rotifers and other small-bodied zooplankton. These picoplankton based food webs result in longer, indirect and less efficient pathways of carbon flow from phytoplankton to fish. In contrast, Quesnel Lake is a more productive oligotrophic lake and its pelagic food webs are based more on nanoplankton and small microphytoplankton that support larger-bodied zooplankton (Daphnia, Diaptomus), and a more direct and efficient two-step transfer to fish. The greater variability of the annual recruitment of sockeye fry in interior lakes may keep zooplankton communities in a non-steady state, this in turn may perpetuate the occurrence of quadrennial cyclic dominance in adult salmon returning to these systems.  相似文献

We assessed the long-term (16 years) effects of introducing piscivores (northern pike) into a small, boreal lake (Lake 221, Experimental Lakes Area) containing abundant populations of two planktivorous fish species. After the introduction, pearl dace were extirpated and yellow perch abundance was greatly reduced. Daphnia species shifted from D. galeata mendota to larger bodied Daphnia catawba, but the total zooplankton biomass did not increase, nor did the biomass of large grazers such as Daphnia. Phytoplankton biomass decreased after the northern pike introduction, but increased when northern pike were partially removed from the lake. Phosphorus (P) excretion by fish was ∼0.18 mg P m−2 d−1 before pike addition, declined rapidly to approximately 0.03–0.10 as planktivorous perch and dace populations were reduced by pike, and increased back to premanipulation levels after the pike were partially removed and the perch population recovered. When perch were abundant, P excretion by fish supported about 30% of the P demand by primary producers, decreasing to 6–14% when pike were abundant. Changes in phytoplankton abundance in Lake 221 appear to be driven by changes in P cycling by yellow perch, whose abundance was controlled by the addition and removal of pike. These results confirm the role of nutrient cycling in mediating trophic cascades and are consistent with previous enclosure experiments conducted in the same lake.  相似文献

The influence of egg predators and physical disturbance on lake trout Salvelinus namaycush egg mortality was investigated in situ in Lake Michigan where recruitment is below detectable levels and egg predator abundance is high. Comparisons were made with Lake Champlain where recruitment is low and egg predator abundance is also low and with Parry Sound (Lake Huron) where recruitment is moderate and egg predators are in low abundance. A multi-density egg seeding method (100 to 5000 eggs m−2) was used to quantify the effect of physical disturbance and egg predation on egg loss. Wind fetch was used as an index of physical disturbance and comparisons across all locations and egg densities suggested that at sites with high wind fetch (>5 km), physical disturbance may be a greater source of egg loss than predation. When analyses were limited to those sites having a wind fetch of <5 km, the percentage of eggs recovered was found to be linearly related to predator density. The strength of this relationship was based largely on egg recovery at 500 and 1000 eggs m−2 because recovery at lower (100, 250 eggs m−2) and very high (5000 eggs m−2) densities was not significantly related to predator density. The reason for this is probably that at low egg densities, crayfish Orconectes spp., the major egg predator at most sites, had difficulty finding and consuming eggs and at high egg densities they became satiated. Egg loss was directly related to wind fetch for Lake Michigan and on average six-fold greater than for Parry Sound suggesting that without corresponding changes in fecundity and age structure, lake trout populations in large lakes like Lake Michigan are inherently less productive than those from enclosed inland waters.  相似文献

Synopsis Nile perch, Lates niloticus, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were originally transplanted from Lake Albert in western Uganda to the African Great Lakes, Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga, where they are partially implicated in reduction of the fish species diversity. Lake Albert is facing multiple environmental changes, including declining fish species diversity, hyper-eutrophication, hypoxia, and reduced fish catches. To examine the role of Nile perch and Nile tilapia in the food web in their native Lake Albert, we estimated their diets using stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes. In Lake Albert, the tilapiine congeners (closely related species), Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, and Sarethorodon galilaeus, and the centropomid Nile perch congener, Lates macrophthalmus, have narrower diet breath in the presence of the native O. niloticus and L. niloticus. A computerized parameter search of dietary items for five commercially important fish species (Hydrocynus forskahlii, Bagrus bayad, L. niloticus, Alestes baremose and Brycinus nurse) was completed using a static isotopic mixing model. The outcome of the simulation for most fish species compared favorably to previously published stomach contents data for the Lake Albert fishes dating back to 1928, demonstrating agreement between stable isotope values and analyses of stomach contents. While there were some indications of changes in the diets of L. niloticus and A. baremose diets over the past 20 years in parallel with other changes in the lake, for the most part, food web structure in this lake remained stable since 1928. The Lake Albert fish assemblage provides insight into the invasion success of L. niloticus and O. niloticus.  相似文献

The use of fish manipulation as a tool for lake restoration in eutrophic lakes has been investigated since 1986 in three shallow, eutrophic Danish lakes. The lakes differ with respect to nutrient loading and nutrient levels (130–1000 μg P l−1, 1–6 mg N l−1). A 50% removal of planktivorous fish in the less eutrophic cyanobacteria-diatom dominated Lake V?ng caused marked changes in lower trophic levels, phosphorus concentration and transparency. Only minor changes occurred after a 78% removal of planktivorous fish in eutrophic cyanobacteria dominated Frederiksborg Castle Lake. In the hypertrophic, green algae dominated Lake S?byg?rd a low recruitment of all fish species and a 16% removal of fish biomass created substantial changes in trophic structure, but no decrease in phosphorus concentration. The different response pattern is interpreted as (1) a difference in density and persistence of bloomforming cyanobacteria caused by between-lake variations in nutrient levels and probably also mixing- and flushing rates, (2) a difference in specific loss rates through sedimentation of the algal community prevaling after the fish manipulation, (3) a decreased impact of planktivorous fish with increasing mean depth and (4) a lake specific difference in ability to create a self-increasing reduction in the phosphorus level in the lake water. This in turn seems related to the phosphorus loading.  相似文献

1. Bythotrephes cederstroemi (Crustacea: Onychopoda: Cercopagidae) invaded Harp Lake, Ontario in 1993, since when the zooplankton community has shifted from dominance of small-bodied to large-bodied species. During 1995 diets of adult lake herring (Coregonus artedii), Harp Lake’s primary planktivorous fish, were examined to determine the extent to which this conspicuous zooplankter has become integrated into the lake’s foodweb and whether fish condition has been affected in consequence. 2. Bythotrephes and Daphnia galeata mendotae were strongly preferred prey, whilst Holopedium gibberum and calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were negatively selected by lake herring. Predation on Bythotrephes and Holopedium was not size-selective, although D. galeata mendotae and calanoid copepods (Leptodiaptomus minutus and L. sicilis) consumed by herring were significantly larger than co-occurring conspecifics in the lake. 3. Caudal spines of Bythotrephes may form boluses in lake herring stomachs. However, the number of caudal spines in fish digestive tracts did not differ significantly from the number of Bythotrephes’ mandible pairs, indicating that the former were not differentially retained. 4. Lake herring weight-at-length relationships in lakes in Muskoka, Ontario, invaded by Bythotrephes did not differ from those in adjacent non-invaded lakes, indicating that Bythotrephes invasion of lakes apparently has not affected condition of lake herring.  相似文献

1. Small cladocerans, copepod nauplii and rotifers often dominate the zooplankton community in tropical and subtropical lakes. This is probably because of high predation pressure by small omnivorous–planktivorous fish, but experimental evidence is scarce.
2. This study used two approaches to test the effect of the small omnivorous–planktivorous fish species Jenynsia multidentata , which is frequently abundant in (sub)tropical eutrophic lakes in South America, on the size distribution of zooplankton. In Lake Blanca (Uruguay), which lacks any piscivores, we sampled seasonally for both fish and zooplankton. We also conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment with treatments containing or lacking J. multidentata .
3. Together, the empirical and experimental data suggest that J. multidentata predation plays an important role in modulating the size structure of the zooplankton community in subtropical lakes. In the absence of J. multidentata , stocked large-sized zooplankters like Daphnia obtusa were abundant in the experiments, while small-sized zooplankton dominated in the presence of fish, as they did in the lake itself from spring to the end of the season.  相似文献

Daphnids undergoing diel horizontal migration (DHM) to seek daytime refuge in the littoral zones of shallow lakes are likely to confront chemical cues from littoral-associated predators and macrophytes. In field experiments, we investigated how the natural suite of chemicals occurring in a wholly vegetated lake as well as within plant-free mesocosms with artificial macrophytes and epiphytes (either fishless or containing small fish) influenced individual daphnid growth. In laboratory experiments, we further examined how water containing chemicals from either a submerged macrophyte (waterweed, Elodea canadensis ), a planktivorous fish (roach, Rutilus rutilus ) or both impacted daphnid growth and life-history traits. In the field, we found the greatest suppression of daphnid growth in vials containing water from the wholly vegetated lake relative to growth of daphnids housed in vials containing spring water. Water from the mesocosm with fish also suppressed daphnid growth. Daphnid growth in water from the fishless mesocosm, which contained plastic plants colonized by epiphytes, did not differ from that of daphnids grown in spring water. In the lab experiment, daphnids exposed to Elodea chemicals took longer to mature and possessed fewer eggs than daphnids in media without Elodea chemicals. Daphnids exposed to chemicals from both Elodea and roach reproduced the earliest and at a smaller size. Daphnids exposed to only roach chemical cues did not significantly differ from daphnids in control media for age or size at first reproduction although they did possess fewer eggs. Daphnia responses to chemicals from either roach or Elodea alone did not predict how Daphnia responded to the combined influence of multiple chemical cues. Our results suggest that prolonged exposure to macrophyte chemicals incurs costs for Daphnia .  相似文献

The interactions between the higher trophic levels in a shallow eutrophic lake were studied during the course of a year. Three fish species determined the main pathways of organic matter flow within the system: the predominantly planktivorous bream (Abramis brama), the obligate planktivorous smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), and the piscivorous pikeperch (Stizostedion lucioperca). Of the thirteen common zooplankton taxa Daphnia hyalina and cyclopoid copepods were utilized most by the planktivorous fish, while the large production of small cladocerans is almost left unutilized. The seasonal variations of production and consumption are large. This is mainly affected by seasonal variation of the water temperature. The production of O + smelt is efficiently utilized by the pikeperch. Being the most important zooplankton consumer, as well as the most important prey group, O + fish plays a key role in the Tjeukemeer food web.  相似文献

Environmental controls on cladoceran community structure in lake ecosystems are complex and may involve many environmental parameters including trophic state and fish populations. In Lake Erhai, a plateau lake located in southwest China, it was hypothesized that a combination of lake eutrophication and planktivorous fish introduction would increase the abundance of cladoceran, while also decreasing cladoceran size. To test this hypothesis, we examined temporal changes in cladoceran microfossils in the sediments of Lake Erhai over the past century. The influence of changing macrophyte coverage within the littoral region of the lake was also considered. Results demonstrated that cladoceran abundance (measured as flux of cladoceran fossils in the sediments) increased markedly accompanying eutrophication of the lake. In addition, there was a shift in the dominant cladoceran species from those species that prefer oligotrophic conditions to those that prefer mesotrophic and eutrophic conditions. A reduction in the ephippium length of Daphnia spp. was observed and attributed to the introduction of the planktivorous fish Neosalanx taihuensis. Our findings indicated that eutrophication and fish introduction were the main controls affecting cladoceran community structure during the recent decades, and predation by planktivorous fish had an important impact on Daphnia body size.  相似文献

The stomach contents of 1922 Alestes baremose Joannis and 1184 Hydrocynus forskali Cuvier caught in Lake Albert, East Africa were examined. The fish were caught in gill nets in three main different types of habitat; in lagoons, inshore in the main body of the lake and offshore. Zooplankton, ephemeropteran imagines and higher plant species constituted almost the whole diet of A, baremose , although the relative importance of these three items varied with habitat. In the lagoons and inshore Hydrocynus forskali was mainly piscivorous, but offshore where the largest specimens occur it was feeding mainly on Caridina nilotica. The role of Hydrocynus species as predators in Lake Albert is discussed and it is shown that in this lake predation intensity bythis genus must be considered entirely in terms of H.forskali .  相似文献

Retropinna retropinna occurred in two forms in Lake Waahi, North Island, New Zealand. One form was characterized by high mean gill raker counts ( c . 28) and low mean vertebral counts ( c . 52)—similar to those of non-migratory, lake resident, native smelt in some other lakes of the lower Waikato River system. The other form had low mean gill raker counts ( c . 21) and high vertebral counts ( c . 60)—similar to migratory smelt at five sites along the lower Waikato River down to its estuary. The lake resident form was shorter but deeper bodied than the migratory form, as indicated by significant differences in mean length and in weight-length regression analyses.
The two forms overlapped in time of sexual maturity. As in other native lacustrine smelt populations of the lower Waikato system, the resident form had more but smaller eggs than the migratory form. The egg number to body length regression and the mean egg diameter of migratory Lake Waahi smelt were similar to those of lower Waikato River smelt. Evidence for reproductive separation of the two forms is presented and mechanisms controlling their meristic and other differences are considered.  相似文献
