In the last two centuries, several species of Australian eucalypts (e.g. Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E.␣globulus) were introduced into the Iberian Peninsula for the production of paper pulp. The effects of the introduction of exotic root-symbitotic
fungi together with the eucalypts have received little attention. During the past years, we have investigated the biology
of ectomycorrhizal fungi in eucalypt plantations in the Iberian Peninsula. In the plantations studied, we found fruit bodies
of several Australian ectomycorrhizal fungi and identified their ectomycorrhizas with DNA molecular markers. The most frequent
species were Hydnangium carneum, Hymenogaster albus, Hysterangium inflatum, Labyrinthomyces donkii, Laccaria fraterna, Pisolithus albus, P. microcarpus, Rhulandiella berolinensis, Setchelliogaster rheophyllus, and Tricholoma eucalypticum. These fungi were likely brought from Australia together with the eucalypts, and they seem to have facilitated the establishment
of eucalypt plantations and their naturalization. The dispersion of Australian fungal propagules may be facilitating the spread
of eucalypts along watercourses in semiarid regions increasing the water lost. Because ectomycorrhizal fungi are obligate
symbionts, their capacity to persist after eradication of eucalypt stands, and/or to extend beyond forest plantations, would
rely on the possibility to find compatible native host trees, and to outcompete the native ectomycorrhizal fungi. Here we
illustrate the case of the Australasian species Laccaria fraterna, which fruits in Mediterranean shrublands of ectomycorrhizal species of Cistus (rockroses). We need to know which other Australasian fungi extend to the native ecosystems, if we are to predict environmental␣risks
associated with the introduction of Australasian ectomycorrhizal fungi into the Iberian Peninsula.

Biomass additivity is a desirable characteristic of a system of equations for predicting component as well as total tree biomass since it eliminates the inconsistency between the sum of predicted values for components such as stem, bark, branch and leaf and the prediction for the total tree. Besides logical consistency, a system of additive biomass equations when estimated by taking into account the inherent correlation among the biomass components has greater statistical efficiency than separately estimated equations for individual components. Using mostly small sample data from both published and unpublished sources, a system of non-linear additive biomass equations was developed for 15 native eucalypt forest tree species of temperate Australia. Diameter at breast height was used as the independent variable for all 15 species, while the combined variable of diameter and tree height was used for 14 species with height data. The system of additive equations provided more accurate biomass estimates than the common approach of separately fitting total tree and component biomass equations using log transformed data through least squares regression. Residual error variances were collectively estimated for each species by pooling small sample data across species and using indicator variables to represent the scale factor for each species in a residual variance function. This method overcame a common problem in estimating heteroscedastic error variance in non-linear biomass equations with additive error terms for small samples. From the estimated residual variance functions, approximate confidence bands containing about 95% of the observed data about the mean curve of predicted biomass were derived for all biomass components of each species. This system of additive biomass equations will prove to be useful for biomass estimation of native eucalypt forests of temperate Australia. 相似文献

A method of field application of strontium chloride (SrCl2) and the assessment of local dispersal of marked Helicoverpa armigera moths in a mark-capture experiment in southern India are described. A 1.7 ha field of pigeonpea sustaining a population of approximately 400,000 larvae was treated with a single application of SrCl2 plus surfactant at 10 kg/ha, using a motorised high volume sprayer. An estimated 50,400 moths emerging over a 20 day period were unequivocally marked with Sr at a marking efficiency of 55%. Catches of moths in an array of 14 battery operated light traps and 29 pheromone traps, up to 3.5 km distant were analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Low recaptures of marked moths (7%) in the treated field suggested the rapid exodus of emergent moths, even while the crop remained attractive, and their dilution or replacement by immigrants. The distribution of marked moths in lights and pheromone traps is consistent with a predominantly downwind dispersal close to the ground during the early part of the night and more random movement later on.
Résumé L'exposé concerne une méthode de traitement en champ des chenilles par le chlorure de strontium (SrCl2) et de la mesure de la dispersion locale des papillons marqués de H. armigera Hübner (Lépido.: Noctuida) dans le sud de l'Inde. Un champ de 1,7 ha de C. cajan (cultivar ICPL138) qui hébergeait une population d'environ 400 000 chenilles a été traité en une seule fois avec un pulvérisateur motorisé de forte capacité à raison de 10 kg/ha de SrCl2 additionné de 0,1% Triton X-100 comme surfactant. 55% des 50 400 papillons émergeant sur une période de 20 jours étaient sans ambiguïté marqués au strontium. Les papillons, capturés dans des rangées de 14 pièges lumineux et 33 pièges à phéromones attractifs jusqu'à 3,5 km, ont été examinés au spectrophotomètre à absorption atomique. Les faibles recapturés (7%) dans le champ traité suggèrent un rapide exode des mouches ayant émergé ou leur remplacement par des immigrants. Les captures révèlent, au début de la nuit, une dispersion majoritairement dans le sens du vent, près du sol et, plus tard dans la nuit, un mouvement plus au hasard.相似文献

Temperate regions of Australia have extensive commercial plantations of Monterey pine, Pinus radiata D. Don. Replacement of indigenous forests by P. radiata is likely to have significant effects on assemblages of native Lepidoptera, and has been considered a major threat to native fauna through displacing native species. However, many species of Lepidoptera, including ennomine geometrid moths in the genus Chlenias Guenèe, have adopted P. radiata as a larval host. Comparisons were made of oviposition preferences and nutritional ecology of Chlenias auctaria Guenée on P. radiata and two native host plants [Acacia mearnsii De Wild. (Mimosaceae) and Eucalyptus obliqua LHérit (Myrtaceae)]. Females showed no significant oviposition preference for any of the three hosts. Growth of sixth instar larvae was significantly less on P. radiata than on the native hosts. Pupal weights were significantly lower, suggesting that the fitness of moths reared on P. radiata will be significantly reduced. The life history strategy of C. auctaria, which includes dispersal of first instar larvae by ballooning, may predispose this species to feed on poor quality hosts, and this may be common to other polyphagous species found feeding on P. radiata in southern hemisphere plantations. The impact of P. radiata may have a long term effect on lepidopteran communities, beyond the simple replacement of indigenous host plants leading to extirpations of feeding specialists. 相似文献

Summary Previous work has suggested that tree stems are structured dimensionally to resist the forces to which they are subjected by the weight of the crown and the action of wind, snow and other loads on the crown. This proposition has been used to develop allometric relationships relating diameter at breast height or height of individual trees growing in even-aged monoculture to their above-ground fresh biomass. These models have practical application as estimators of tree diameters or heights from tree biomass as extensions of mechanistically based models of forest tree growth which predict tree biomasses. The present work applied these models to Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell, E. delegatensis R. Baker, E. nitens (Deane: Maiden) Maiden and E. grandis Hill ex Maiden trees, growing in plantation or regrowth stands, aged between 1.5 and 20 years, at eight geographically diverse sites extending from temperate to sub-tropical regions of Australia. While the models held for the various species at the various sites, their parameter values differed significantly between sites and/or species. This suggested there may be some inadequacy in the models. However, the differences were small and it was found reasonable to fit single models across all species and sites for practical use in estimating diameter or height. The errors about predicted values of height and diameter from these models were quantified. The models were also found to estimate diameter or height with little loss of precision when dry biomass was used in place of fresh biomass. 相似文献

Microsatellite polymorphisms were analysed toassess the extent and pattern of geneticdiversity within and between isolatedpopulations of the rare mallee eucalypt, Eucalyptus curtisii. Twelve populations intotal were sampled throughout the 500 km rangeof the species in South-east Queensland.Results from analysis of 5 loci indicated ahigh degree of clonality within many of thesites, with two populations being comprised ofsingle genets. Estimates of radial growth ratessuggest that these clones may be between 4000and 9000 years old. Low overall levels ofgenetic diversity were recorded for thespecies, H
e = 0.54, however a highlysignificant amount of populationdifferentiation was observed, R
ST =0.22. There was no evidence of isolation bydistance and although there were morphologicaldifferences between some populations, this wasunrelated to molecular variation.The low level of genetic diversity and highproportion of interpopulation variation agreeswith the findings of other studies onregionally distributed eucalypts. The findingsindicate that previous estimates of theeffective population size of the species arelargely overestimated and that the individualpopulations are sufficiently differentiatedthat they should be treated as separatemanagement units. The objective of this study was to evaluate pollen dispersal inBrassica napus (oilseed rape). The selectable marker, used to follow pollen movement, was a dominant transgene (bar) conferring resistance to the herbicide glufosinate-ammonium. Transgenic and non-transgenic plants of the cultivar Westar were planted in a 1.1 ha field trial, with the transgenic plants in a 9 m diameter circle at the centre, surrounded by non-transgenic plants to a distance of at least 47 m in all directions. A 1 m circle of non-transgenic plants was sown in the centre of the transgenic area to allow estimation of the level of pollen dispersal when plants were in close contact. Honeybee hives were placed at the trial site to optimize the opportunity for cross-pollination. During the flowering period, regular observations were made of the number of plants flowering and the number and type of insects present in 60 1 m2 areas. These areas were located uniformly around the plot at distances of 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 47 m from the edge of the 9 m circle of transgenic plants. Seed samples were harvested from each of the 7 distances so that approximately 20% of the circumference of the plot was sampled at each distance. The centre non-transgenic circle was also sampled. Plants were grown from the seed samples and sprayed with glufosinate to estimate the frequency of pollen dispersal at each distance. In order to screen enough samples to detect low frequency cross-pollination events, seed samples were tested in the greenhouse and on a larger scale in the field. Results were confirmed by testing progeny for glufosinate resistance and by Southern blot analysis. The estimated percentage of pollen dispersal in the non-transgenic centre circle was 4.8%. The frequency was estimated to be 1.5% at a distance of 1 m and 0.4% at 3 m. The frequency decreased sharply to 0.02% at 12 m and was only 0.00033% at 47 m. No obvious directional effects were detected that could be ascribed to wind or insect activity. 相似文献

Changes in protein biosynthesis were examined during the early stages of differentiation of Eucalyptus grandis-Pisolithus tinctorius ectomycorrhizas by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of 35S-labelled proteins. Three distinct isolates of P. tinctorius Coker & Couch were chosen based on the rate of ectomycorrhizal formation (i.e. infectivity) with E. grandis W. Hill ex Maiden. The isolate H506 was not able to induce mycorrhiza, isolate 441 showed moderate infectivity and isolate H2144 exhibited a very high infectivity. Mycorrhiza were produced in vitro in a system where seeds were germinated in the presence of fungal mycelium and exudates. The non-mycorrhizal isolate caused no changes in root protein biosynthesis as analyzed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, whereas drastic alterations in protein biosynthesis were observed from initial contact with the aggressive mycobionts. During mycorrhizal development, there was a marked inhibition of plant polypeptides synthesis, enhanced accumulation of some fungal polypeptides and the emergence of symbiosis-specific polypeptides, the so-called ectomycorrhizins. The major changes were observed in a group of fungal acidic polypeptides (apparent molecular weight 28–32 kDa) including the ectomycorrhizin E32. These polypeptides first appeared at contact and their synthesis increased during mycorrhizal formation, suggesting a role in mycorrhizal development, most likely as structural proteins. Up-regulation of the synthesis of fungal symbiosis-related polypeptides was tightly correlated to the infectivity of the strain.Abbreviations FW

A field experiment was initiated in March 1986 in central Portugal to evaluate the influence of water and nutrient supply on the productivity of E. globulus. The treatments applied were, irrigation plus fertiliser, irrigation and the application of fertilisers in rainfed plots. The control received neither fertilisers nor irrigation. The annual pattern litterfall was measured over a period of 5 years and the litter layer was quantified 6 years after planting. The amount of litterfall varied with the treatments. Simultaneous water and nutrient supply increased significantly litterfall, in respect to control. In rainfed conditions the timing of the maximum of litterfall was anticipated relative to the irrigated plots. However, the time of maximum litterfall did not coincide with the dry season but rather with period of maximum growth in each treatment. The N and P concentration was higher in the litterfall of the two fertilised treatments than in the others. The lowest concentrations of N and P in the leaf litter were coincident with the summer period in all treatments. The withdrawal of N and P ranged between 32 and 65% according to treatment and season. The deliverance of nutrients through litterfall was strongly increased by simultaneous water and nutrient supply. The supply of fertilisers in rainfed conditions promoted higher deliverance of nutrients than in the plots irrigated only. The mass of the litter layer was significantly increased by simultaneous water and nutrient supply. Application of fertilisers induced an increase in N and P concentration and a decrease in C/N ratio of the litter layer. Treatments and C/N values did not influence apparently the proportion of carbon, N and P released through mineralization from the litter layer. The non-fertilized treatments showed a more efficient N cycling than the others. 相似文献

Plantation forestry with exotic trees in south China needs compatible symbionts to improve the growth of seedlings in nurseries and to enhance establishment and growth in the field. Scleroderma, a potentially suitable symbiont for inoculation, is not being used in containerized nurseries in the region due to poor knowledge of its host range. The ability of 15 collections of Scleroderma, nine from Australia and six from Asia, to colonize and promote growth of four important exotic plantation trees (Eucalyptus globulus Labill., Eucalyptus urophylla ST Blake, Pinus elliottii Engl., and Pinus radiata D. Don) was examined in a nursery potting mix. There was generally low host specificity of Scleroderma between tree genera. At 12 weeks after inoculation, 13 to 14 of the 15 spore collections formed ectomycorrhizas on seedlings of eucalypts or pines. The extent of colonization differed between spore treatments with two or four collections forming abundant mycorrhizas (>50% fine roots colonized) on E. globulus or E. urophylla, respectively, and three or five on P. radiata or P. elliottii, respectively. Three collections from Australia strongly colonized all hosts resulting in 26 to 100% of short roots being colonized. Chinese Scleroderma collections resulted in fewer mycorrhizas on eucalypts than on pines. Inoculation stimulated the growth (shoot height and dry weight) of eucalypt and pine seedlings by up to 105% where Scleroderma mycorrhizas developed. The results suggest that there is a need to source Scleroderma from outside China for inoculating eucalypts in Chinese nurseries whereas Chinese collections of Scleroderma could be used in pine nurseries. Further screening of Australian and Chinese Scleroderma should be performed in Chinese nurseries and in the field before final commercial decisions are made. 相似文献

Dispersal of pollen, seeds, or vegetative propagules from intensively bred, exotic, or recombinant DNA modified forest plantations
may cause detrimental or beneficial ecological impacts on wild or managed ecosystems. Insertion of genes designed to prevent
or substantially reduce dispersal could reduce the risk and extent of undesired impacts. Containment measures may also be
required by law or marketplace constraints, regardless of risks or benefits. We discuss: (1) the context for when genetic
containment or mitigation systems may be needed; (2) technology approaches and mechanisms; (3) the state of knowledge on genes/genomics
of sexual reproduction in forest trees; (4) stability of transgene expression during vegetative growth; (5) simulation studies
to define the level of containment needed; and (6) needed research to deliver effective containment technologies. We illustrate
progress with several examples from our research on recombinant DNA modified poplars. Our simulations show that even partial
sterility can provide very substantial reductions in gene flow into wild trees. We conclude that it is impossible to define
the most effective containment approaches, nor their reliability, based on current genomic knowledge and technological tools.
Additional genomic and technological studies of a wide variety of options are needed. Studies in field environments are essential
to provide data relevant to ecological analysis and regulatory decisions and need to be carried out in phylogenetically diverse
representatives of the economically most important taxa of forest trees.

Observations on two natural and one artificial distylous populations ofPrimula veris in Britain revealed very high proportions of intramorph pollen on pin stigmas and moderate proportions of intermorph pollen on thrum stigmas. The average ratio of pin: thrum pollen production per flower was 2.4:1. Large amounts of pollen remained in dehisced anthers, perhaps reflecting low levels of pollinator activity. The pollen morphology of the taxa belonging to the generaAetheorhizaCass.,LaunaeaCass.,ReichardiaRoth andSonchus L. in the Iberian Peninsula has been studied with light and electron microscopy. The pollen is 3(-4)-zonocolporate and echinolophate (without polar lacunae, but in general with prelacunae), with equatorial ridges and 15–20 lacunae: 3–4 poral, 6–8 abporal and 6–8 paraporal. Small to medium size, P × E = 19–36 × 23–42 µm; sometimes two different sizes have been found. Exine 3–9 µm thick and ornamentation microreticulate and echinate. Effects of P fertilisation and ectomycorrhizal fungal inoculation on early growth of eucalypt plantations in southern China 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Eucalypt plantations in China have largely been established on soils that are low in phosphorus (P) and have few eucalypt-compatible ectomycorrhizal fungi. Effects of P application and ectomycorrhizal fungal inoculation on early tree growth in plantations of Eucalyptus urophylla Blake in Guangdong (Gaoyao) and E. globulus Labill. in Yunnan (Chuxiong) in southern China were investigated as part of a larger study. Application of superphosphate at establishment, in the presence of a basal fertiliser, increased early growth of E. urophylla and E. globulus. The optimum treatments for maximum stand volume at year 3 were 200 kg P ha–1 which increased stand volume by 750% on the strongly acidic, P-deficient lateritic red oxisol at Gaoyao, and 40 kg P ha–1 which increased stand volume by 55% on the mildly P-deficient red ultisol at Chuxiong, at 3 years. Superphosphate increased tree survival at Gaoyao as well as at Chuxiong. Nursery inoculation of eucalypt seedlings with ectomycorrhizal fungi significantly affected tree height and stand volume of the E. urophylla plantation, but the effect (positive or negative) was isolate-dependent and related to tree survival rate. A Laccaria isolate (CSIRO E4728) significantly increased stand volume by 27% at Gaoyao and a Scleroderma (MURU LH041) increased growth by 15% at Chuxiong at age 3 years. All isolates increased tree growth under P-limited soil conditions and only one isolate increased tree growth at marginal soil P. The results suggest that tree growth should be able to be optimised in plantations by the use of effective ectomycorrhizal fungi combined with a judicious fertilisation program at establishment. 相似文献

The abundance and diversity of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) was assessed based on the collection of basidiocarps during 12 months comprising the spring of 1995, and the summer, autumn, and winter of 1996, in three stands of young, middle-aged, and rotation age plantations of Pinus taeda and Eucalyptus dunnii, in the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. A total of 3,085 collections yielded 34 presumed EMF taxa in ten genera, including mushroom-like and sequestrate species. Fruiting patterns of EMF differed with host and season, and host specificity was apparent in some. The overall relative importance (RI) and the Shannon diversity index (H) suggested that stands of E. dunnii had a more diverse aboveground EMF community than those of P. taeda. Overall, species of Scleroderma and Laccaria were not only the most abundant but also had the highest biomass values. The results show that a small number of species of abundant biomass and a larger number of species of less-abundant biomass characterize each forest class. 相似文献

Background and Aims
Gene flow by seed and pollen largely shapes the genetic structure within and among plant populations. Seed dispersal is often strongly spatially restricted, making gene flow primarily dependent on pollen dispersal within and into populations. To understand distance-dependent pollination success, pollen dispersal and gene flow were studied within and into a population of the alpine monocarpic perennial Campanula thyrsoides.Methods
A paternity analysis was performed on sampled seed families using microsatellites, genotyping 22 flowering adults and 331 germinated offspring to estimate gene flow, and pollen analogues were used to estimate pollen dispersal. The focal population was situated among 23 genetically differentiated populations on a subalpine mountain plateau (<10 km2) in central Switzerland.Key Results
Paternity analysis assigned 110 offspring (33·2 %) to a specific pollen donor (i.e. ‘father’) in the focal population. Mean pollination distance was 17·4 m for these offspring, and the pollen dispersal curve based on positive LOD scores of all 331 offspring was strongly decreasing with distance. The paternal contribution from 20–35 offspring (6·0–10·5 %) originated outside the population, probably from nearby populations on the plateau. Multiple potential fathers were assigned to each of 186 offspring (56·2 %). The pollination distance to ‘mother’ plants was negatively affected by the mothers'' degree of spatial isolation in the population. Variability in male mating success was not related to the degree of isolation of father plants.Conclusions
Pollen dispersal patterns within the C. thyrsoides population are affected by spatial positioning of flowering individuals and pollen dispersal may therefore contribute to the course of evolution of populations of this species. Pollen dispersal into the population was high but apparently not strong enough to prevent the previously described substantial among-population differentiation on the plateau, which may be due to the monocarpic perenniality of this species. 相似文献18.

Understanding how habitat disturbance affects the occurrence of fauna is an important issue in the effective management of habitat and conservation of biodiversity. In this study, 11 paired sites were established around the periphery of Rushworth State Forest in central Victoria, south-eastern Australia, to examine the influence of disturbance to structural complexity in the ground strata on the occurrence of reptiles. Study sites were paired on the basis of proximity, physiognomic and vegetational characteristics – each pair was established in the same vegetation 'type' (Ecological Vegetation Class) and was dominated by the overstorey species of Red Ironbark Eucalyptus tricarpa and Grey Box E. microcarpa, or Bull Mallee E. behriana and Grey Box. They were also paired on the basis that they had experienced different degrees of disturbance to the ground strata. Sites within each pair differed substantially in their ground-layer structure (e.g. number of stumps, total number of shrubs, litter depth), but were virtually indistinguishable in their overstorey characteristics (e.g. basal area, canopy cover, cover of tall shrubs). Surveys over two summer seasons using area-constrained active searches yielded ten species of reptiles from five families. Despite the repeated search effort, both the number of reptile species and individuals recorded per site were low (4 species, 17 individuals), suggesting the possibility of historical impoverishment. Reptiles were generally 2.4 times more abundant on 'undisturbed' than 'disturbed' sites. The disparity was also reflected in the number of species per site, which was significantly greater on the 'undisturbed' sites. The greater species richness and abundance of reptiles recorded for 'undisturbed' sites are attributed to the greater structural complexity of the ground strata on these sites. Effective management for reptiles, therefore, should aim to create, retain or increase the structural heterogeneity of a site, particularly in the ground-layers. 相似文献

【目的】研究大面积栽植外来树种日本落叶松和日本花柏对鄂西北森林群落物种多样性的影响,为评价外来树种的入侵风险提供依据。【方法】采用样地调查法对比研究外来树种日本落叶松和日本花柏人工林与当地森林群落特征差异。【结果】日本落叶松人工林样地林下植物种类丰富,样地平均物种数与当地天然林样地物种数相比无显著差异;林下灌木层和草本层多样性指数较高,草本层多样性指数与当地天然林相比无显著差异;林下未发现日本落叶松的更新苗。日本花柏人工林样地平均物种数显著少于当地其他人工林样地;乔木层、灌木层和草本层的4个多样性指数值均小于当地其他人工林样地;在3个样地中出现日本花柏更新苗,更新苗数量达479株·hm~(-2)。【结论】引种栽培日本落叶松不会导致当地森林群落的物种多样性降低,不会引起生物入侵风险;但引种栽培日本花柏会明显降低当地森林群落的物种多样性,对当地森林生态系统的稳定构成一定威胁。 相似文献

Galinsona parviflora (Asteraceae) is a widespread annual weed that is invasive, colonizing new ground where it is able to persist. We studied
the biomass structure of the G. parviflora population at the module level by using the methods of field plot investigation and weighing at 10 sample plots. Modular
biomass was calculated and used for analysis of relationships between various modules. The results show that there was a positive
correlation between plant height and modular biomass, between stem biomass and root biomass, stem biomass and capitulum biomass,
aboveground biomass and underground biomass, and lastly, stem biomass and leaf biomass. The preferred model which measured
all the relationships was a power function model with absolute coefficients (R2) ranging from 0.6303 to 0.9782.
