Aphid life cycles can encompass cyclical parthenogenesis, obligate parthenogenesis, obligate parthenogenesis with male production and an intermediate 'bet-hedging' strategy where an aphid genotype will over-winter by continuing to reproduce by parthenogenesis and by investment in sexually produced eggs. In this paper, we focus on aphid lineages that reproduce entirely parthenogenetically (asexual aphids), in contrast to those that have any sexual forms in the annual cycle. Using modern molecular techniques, aphid biologists have made many empirical observations showing that asexual lineages are widespread both geographically and temporally. Indeed, we are collectively beginning to gather data on the evolution and persistence of these lineages through time. Here we review aphid karyology and parthenogenesis, both essential for interpretation of the molecular and ecological evolution of aphid asexual lineages. We describe the growing list of studies that have identified aphid genotypes that are both temporally and geographically widespread. We then collate examples of molecular and chromosomal evolution in asexual aphids and review the literature pertaining to phenotypic evolution and ecological diversification of asexual aphid lineages. In addition, we briefly discuss the potential of bacterial endosymbionts and epigenetic effects to influence the evolution of asexual aphid lineages. Lastly we provide a list of aphid taxa believed to be obligately asexual. This will be a useful resource for those seeking parthenogenetic animals as study systems. In conclusion, we present guidelines for the use of the term clone in aphid biology and stress the need for well-designed and well-executed studies examining the potential of asexual aphid lineages for adaptive evolution.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. A survey of morphological characters is carried out for Stapeliopsis . The information obtained from this is combined with molecular data from the plastid trn L-F DNA region and ITS1 of the nuclear encoded 18S−26S rRNA cistron, to obtain a hypothesis of the evolutionary relationships among the species. It is shown that Stapeliopsis is monophyletic in a combined molecular and morphological analysis. Stapeliopsis is sister to a clade containing Huernia , Orbea and Tromotriche . The species of Stapeliopsis group into two clades. One contains S. khamiesbergensis , S. neronis and S. urniflora , and this is highly supported. The remaining species fall into an unsupported clade in which S. exasperata is sister to the others. The genera Hermanschwartzia Plowes and Neopectinaria Plowes are rejected. It is shown that a synapomorphy for Stapeliopsis is the laterally flattened inner corona-lobes, which touch the anthers only at their bases. Eight species of Stapeliopsis are recognized, with no subgeneric divisions.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 148 , 125–155.  相似文献

Karyological information on Iberian Ophrys species is very limited. This paper provides the haploid and diploid chromosome numbers of 11 taxa of sect. Pseudophrys and sect. Ophrys , both of which are well represented in the Iberian Peninsula, and two taxa from Tunisia. The first data on chromosome numbers for O. vasconica (2 n  = 72, 74), O. ficalhoana (2 n  = 36), O. picta (2 n  = 36), O. sphegifera ( n  = 18, 2 n  = 36, 38) and O. passionis (2 n  = 36) are also presented, confirming the stability of the chromosome number in Ophrys . In addition, populations of the group O. omegaifera ( O. dyris and O. vasconica ), together with tetraploidy, pentaploidy and the existence of aneuploid phenomena, are reported for the first time in Iberia. The basic diploid number is always 2 n  = 36. The karyotypes of several species were analysed. Evolutionary trends in Ophrys chromosomes are discussed. Taxonomic and phytogeographical details are provided on several species or groups of species from Iberia.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003 , 142 , 395−406.  相似文献

The fronds and compound tendrils of the Stephanian (Late Carboniferous) seed fern Blanzyopteris praedentata possess several types of trichomes, two of which may, based on their morphology, have functioned as deterrents against herbivores. Bands of upwardly curved trichomes, occurring on the adaxial surfaces of tendrils, frond- and pinna rachides, are also known from extant plants, where they create mechanical obstacles. Other trichomes that are glandular occur on most parts of the foliage and tendrils and represent a different form of defence mechanism. These trichomes apparently possessed a touch-sensitive mechanism that opened the secretory cell when touched. They are interpreted as functionally similar to the so-called 'explosive' trichomes of certain extant Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae. Studies of living Oleander aphids ( Aphis nerii ) on Sicana odorifera (Cucurbitaceae) demonstrate the effectiveness of the physical component of this defence. When touched and ruptured by an aphid, the trichomes of S. odorifera rapidly release a sticky exudate, which adheres to the animal's legs; the accumulation of exudate on the legs eventually impedes the aphid. Based on these studies, hypotheses are presented on the types of animals that might have been deterred by the glandular trichomes of B. praedentata in the Late Carboniferous.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 133–149.  相似文献

The species of Goniothalamus (Annonaceae) occurring in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore are revised, updating the previous taxonomic treatment by James Sinclair, published in 1955. A total of 18 species is recognized, including a new species, G. tomentosus . Collections referrable to G. tomentosus were previously determined as ' G. marcanii '; examination of the types of G. marcanii reveals that the two taxa are not conspecific, however, and a new name is accordingly validated here. Goniothalamus tomentosus has closest affinities with the Javan/Sumatran species G. costulatus . Other important nomenclatural changes include the reduction of G. umbrosus to synonymy with G. tapis .  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 142 , 321−339.  相似文献

This study clarifies the taxonomic status of Anemone coronaria and segregates the species and A. coronaria infraspecific variants using morphological and morphometric analyses. Principal component analysis of the coronaria group was performed on 25 quantitative and qualitative characters, and morphometric analysis of the A. coronaria infraspecific variants was performed on 21 quantitative and qualitative characters. The results showed that the A. coronaria group clustered into four major groups: A. coronaria L., A. biflora DC, A. bucharica (Regel) Juz.ex Komarov, and a final group including A. eranthioides Regel and A. tschernjaewii Regel. The data on the A. coronaria infraspecific variants clustered into six groups: A. coronaria L. var. coronaria L., var. cyanea Ard., var. albiflora Rouy & Fouc., var. parviflora Regel, var. ventreana Ard., and var. rissoana Ard.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 153 , 417–438.  相似文献

We review and extend data showing concerted evolution of parental 18–5.8–26S nuclear ribosomal DNA (18–26S rDNA) gene families in three natural Nicotiana allotetraploids ( N. tabacum , N. rustica and N. arentsii , each 2 n  = 4 x  = 48) and one synthetic N. tabacum line (Th37, ♀ N. sylvestris (2 n  = 24) × ♂ N. tomentosiformis (2 n  = 24)). The origin of the gene families was analysed by sequence polymorphisms in the intergenic spacer (IGS) region and the number of chromosomal loci by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). FISH revealed that the number and locations of 18–26S rDNA in the natural allopolyploids was the sum of those found in the diploid progenitors. However, the rDNA restriction patterns showed polymorphisms in the IGS that were not additive, suggesting that parental rDNA clusters were partially ( N. tabacum, N. rustica ) or completely ( N. arentsii ) overwritten by hybrid-specific units. Thus the Nicotiana allotetraploids show evidence of concerted evolution, including both intralocus and interlocus gene conversion. A feral N. tabacum collected in Bolivia had a higher proportion of unconverted parental rDNA units than cultivated tobacco varieties, suggesting either that rDNA homogenization is accelerated by inbreeding or multiple origins of tobacco. There is no evidence for the elimination of N. sylvestris- derived rDNA units in the synthetic Th37 tobacco line as occurred in natural tobacco, although several novel rDNA unit variants were found in most but not all the hybrid plants. Factors that may control the occurrence and extent of rDNA homogenization are discussed for allopolyploids in Nicotiana and other taxa.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 615–625.  相似文献

A new species of Hybanthus (Violaceae) from north-eastern Brazil is described and illustrated. Hybanthus verrucosus Paula-Souza is endemic to 'caatingas' of Bahia and Alagoas states and is very distinct from all other Brazilian species of the genus, for its anterior petal, which is covered with small wart-like outgrowths. Other distinctive characteristics of the new species and its relationship with a closely related species ( H. atropurpureus (A.St.-Hil.) Taub.) are discussed.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 141 , 503–506.  相似文献

The desert plated lizard ( Angolosaurus skoogi ), a 'sand sea' endemic of the northern Namib Desert, exhibits remarkable morphological convergence with other dune-dwelling lizards worldwide. This distinct ecomorphic condition sets Angolosaurus apart from the remaining genera in the family Gerrhosauridae. Indeed, a morphological phylogeny addressing generic relationships within the Cordyliformes (Cordylidae + Gerrhosauridae) identified Angolosaurus as the earliest diverging taxon among African gerrhosaurids. We re-evaluated the basal status of Angolosaurus , conducting a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the African and Madagascan gerrhosaurid genera. Our survey involved a comprehensive species-level comparison among the four nominal genera of mainland Africa ( Angolosaurus , Cordylosaurus , Tetradactylus and Gerrhosaurus ). Mitochondrial DNA sequence data from the cytochrome b , ND2, 12S and 16S rRNA genes were combined for analysis using both parsimony and maximum likelihood procedures. In contrast to the morphological hypothesis, our results do not depict Angolosaurus as the sister taxon to other African gerrhosaurids. Rather, the molecular analyses consistently place Angolosaurus within Gerrhosaurus , rendering the latter genus paraphyletic.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 253–261.  相似文献
