In order to improve the evaluation of the force feasible set (FFS) of the upper-limb which is of great interest in the biomechanics field, this study proposes two additional techniques. The first one is based on the identification of the maximal isometric force (MIF) of Hill-based muscles models from sEMG and isometric force measurements at the hand. The second one considers muscles cocontraction. The FFS was computed with an upper-limb musculoskeletal model in three different cases. The first one (M1) considered binary muscular activation and a simple MIF scaling method based on the weight and muscle length of the subject. The second one (M2) introduces cocontraction factors determined from sEMG. The third one (M3) considers the cocontraction factors and the MIF identification. Finally, M1, M2 and M3 are compared with end-effector force measurement.M3 outperforms the two other methods on FFS prediction demonstrating the validity and the usefulness of MIF identification and the consideration of the cocontraction factors.  相似文献

Objective: The present study compared surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity obtained from the submental muscle group for a tongue press and a head lift exercise as potential therapeutic exercises for dysphagic elderly. Materials and methods: Fifty‐three healthy volunteers with a mean age of 35.3 participated in this study. Subjects were required to perform an isometric task, pressing their tongue against the hard palate, and an isotonic task requiring sustained lingual force against the hard palate. Pressure sensors were used to measure the amount of lingual pressure against the hard palate. Submental sEMG data from these tasks were compared with those obtained from the isometric and isotonic aspects of a head lift exercise. Results: No sEMG differences were identified between the isometric tongue press task and head lift exercise. Isotonic tongue press exercises resulted in significantly higher maximum and mean sEMG values compared with the isotonic head lift exercise (p < 0.05). The submental sEMG activity from the tongue press exercise was equal (isometric) to, or greater (isotonic) than comparable muscle activation obtained during the head lift exercise. Conclusions: The tongue press exercise may be less strenuous than the head lift exercise while achieving the same therapeutic effect.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate a surface electromyography (sEMG) signal and force model for the biceps brachii muscle during isotonic isometric contractions for an experimental set-up as well as for a simulation. The proposed model includes a new rate coding scheme and a new analytical formulation of the muscle force generation. The proposed rate coding scheme supposes varying minimum and peak firing frequencies according to motor unit (MU) type (I or II). Practically, the proposed analytical mechanogram allows us to tune the force contribution of each active MU according to its type and instantaneous firing rate. A subsequent sensitivity analysis using a Monte Carlo simulation allows deducing optimised input parameter ranges that guarantee a realistic behaviour of the proposed model according to two existing criteria and an additional one. In fact, this proposed new criterion evaluates the force generation efficiency according to neural intent. Experiments and simulations, at varying force levels and using the optimised parameter ranges, were performed to evaluate the proposed model. As a result, our study showed that the proposed sEMG–force modelling can emulate the biceps brachii behaviour during isotonic isometric contractions.  相似文献

Objectives: Muscle stiffness increases during muscle contraction. The purpose of this study was to determine the strength of the correlation between myotonometric measurements of muscle stiffness and surface electromyography (sEMG) measurements during various levels of voluntary isometric contractions of the biceps brachii muscle. Subjects: Eight subjects (four female; four male), with mean age of 30.6±8.23 years, volunteered to participate in this study. Methods: Myotonometer and sEMG measurements were taken simultaneously from the right biceps brachii muscle. Data were obtained: (1) at rest, (2) while the subject held a 15 lb (6.8 kg) weight isometrically and, (3) during a maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Myotonometer force–displacement curves (amount of tissue displacement to a given unit of force applied perpendicular to the muscle) were compared with sEMG measurements using Pearson’s product–moment correlation coefficients. Results: Myotonometer and sEMG measurement correlations ranged from −0.70 to −0.90. The strongest correlations to sEMG were from Myotonometer force measurements between 1.00 and 2.00 kg. Conclusions: Myotonometer and sEMG measurements were highly correlated. Tissue stiffness, as measured by the Myotonometer, appears capable of assessing changes in muscle activation levels.  相似文献

This study was aimed at investigating the time-course and recovery from eccentric (EC) exercise induced muscle damage by means of surface electromyography (sEMG), ultrasonography (US), and blood enzymes. Five subjects (EC Group) performed two bouts of 35 EC maximum contractions with the biceps brachii of their non dominant arm, five subjects were tested without performing EC (Control Group: CNT). The maximal isometric force (MVC) was measured. Force and sEMG signals were recorded during 80% MVC isometric contractions. In EC and CNT subjects US assessment on non-dominant biceps brachii was performed; creatin kinase (CK) and lactic dehydrogenasis (LDH) plasma levels were also assessed. Force, sEMG and CK-LDH measurements were performed before EC and after it periodically for 4 weeks. The sEMG was analysed in time and frequency domains; a non-linear analysis (Lyapunov 1st exponent, L1) of sEMG was also performed. After EC, the MVC was reduced by 40% on average with respect to the pre-EC values. A significant decrease in the initial frequency content, and in the MDF and L1 decay (13-42% less than the pre-EC values, respectively) was also observed. The sEMG amplitude (Root Mean Square, RMS) was unchanged after EC. The US revealed an increase in muscle belly thickness and in local muscle blood flow after EC. A complete recovery of all the considered parameters was achieved in two weeks. In conclusion sEMG analysis was confirmed as an early indicator of muscle damage. Muscle recovery from damage is followed by both sEMG and US and this may have useful clinical implications. Non linear analysis (L1) was revealed to be sensitive to early sEMG modifications induced by EC as well as able to follow the post EC changes in the sEMG.  相似文献

Fatigue is believed to be a major contributory factor to occupational injuries in machine operators. The development of accurate and usable techniques to measure operator fatigue is therefore important. In this study, we used a novel method based on surface electromyography (sEMG) of the biceps brachii and the Borg scale to evaluate local muscle fatigue in the upper limb after isometric muscle action. Thirteen young males performed isometric actions with the upper limb at different force levels. sEMG activities of the biceps brachii were recorded during the actions. Borg scales were used to evaluate the subjective sensation of local fatigue of the biceps brachii after the actions. sEMG activities were analyzed using the one-third band octave method, and an equation to determine the degree of fatigue was derived based on the relationship between the variable and the Borg scale. The results showed that the relationship could be expressed by a conic curve, and could be used to evaluate muscle fatigue during machine operation.  相似文献

Surface myoelectric signal changes occurring during sustained isometric contractions have been extensively studied with quantitative surface electromyography (sEMG) and are described by means of some sEMG global variables in time and frequency domain (such as the median power spectral frequency). Recently, the possibility of studying local muscle O2 saturation during exercise using non-invasive methods has been enhanced thanks to the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The purpose of this work was to combine NIRS and sEMG techniques to analyze the relationship between modifications of sEMG parameters and the underlying metabolic status of the exercising biceps brachii muscle. This relationship was tested under different isometric contraction modalities, namely static (ST) at 20, 40, 60 and 80%MVC and sinusoidal (SIN) at 40 ± 20 and 60 ± 20%MVC. Results clearly indicated the presence of an initial fast phase of muscle O2 desaturation followed by a slow phase, regardless of the contraction modality. Moreover, the initial rate of muscle O2 desaturation was related to the level of force output (R = 0.92), but it was independent on the contraction modality (p < 0.05). Similarly, changes in sEMG parameters were related to force level (Conduction Velocity-CV vs. Force: R = 0.87; sEMG Median Frequency-MDF vs. Force: R = 0.86). The high correlation found between CV-MDF and Tissue Oxygenation Index (TOI) slope (R = 0.73 and 0.72, respectively) suggests a strong relationship between NIRS and sEMG data. This study indicates that muscle O2 demand during isometric contractions from low to high force levels is influenced by the type of active motor units and not from the type of isometric exercise modality.  相似文献

Surface EMG signals detected in dynamic conditions are affected by a number of artefacts. Among them geometrical factors play an important role. During movement the muscle slides with respect to the skin because of the variation of its length. Such a shift can considerably modify sEMG amplitude. The purpose of this work is to assess geometrical artefacts on sEMG during isometric contractions at different muscle lengths. The average rectified value (ARV) of 15 single differential signals was obtained by means of a linear array of 16 bar electrodes from the vastus medialis and lateralis muscles. The knee angle was changed from 75 degrees to 165 degrees in steps of 30 degrees and voluntary isometric contractions at a low, medium and high force level were performed for each angle. The ARV pattern was normalized with respect to the mean activity to compare signals from different joint angles. From the data collected it was possible to separate the geometrical changes from the changes due to different intensities of activation. In three out of five subjects, we found (within the resolution of our measures) a 1 cm shift for the vastus medialis muscle while no shift was observed for the other two subjects. For the vastus lateralis muscle a 1 cm shift was found in two out of four subjects. Such a shift produces the main contribution to geometrical artefacts. To avoid such artefacts the innervation zones should be located and the EMG electrodes should not be placed near them.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that raw surface EMG (sEMG) should be high pass filtered with cutoffs of 10-30 Hz to remove motion artifact before subsequent processing to estimate muscle force. The purpose of the current study was to explore the benefits of filtering out much of the raw sEMG signal when attempting to estimate accurate muscle forces. Twenty-five subjects were studied as they performed rapid static, anisotonic contractions of the biceps brachii. Biceps force was estimated (as a percentage of maximum) based on forces recorded at the wrist. An iterative approach was used to process the sEMG from the biceps brachii, using progressively greater high pass cutoff frequencies (20-440 Hz in steps of 30 Hz) with first and sixth order filters, as well as signal whitening, to determine the effects on the accuracy of EMG-based biceps force estimates. The results indicate that removing up to 99% of the raw sEMG signal power resulted in significant and substantial improvements in biceps force estimates. These findings challenge previous assumptions that the raw sEMG signal power between about 20 and 500 Hz should used when estimating muscle force. For the purposes of force prediction, it appears that a much smaller, high band of sEMG frequencies may be associated with force and the remainder of the spectrum has little relevance for force estimation.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not the application of independent component analysis (ICA) is useful for separation of motor unit action potential trains (MUAPTs) from the multi-channel surface EMG (sEMG) signals. In this study, the eight-channel sEMG signals were recorded from tibialis anterior muscles during isometric dorsi-flexions at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% maximal voluntary contraction. Recording MUAP waveforms with little time delay mounted between the channels were obtained by vertical sEMG channel arrangements to muscle fibers. The independent components estimated by FastICA were compared with the sEMG signals and the principal components calculated by principal component analysis (PCA). From our results, it was shown that FastICA could separate groups of similar MUAP waveforms of the sEMG signals separated into each independent component while PCA could not sufficiently separate the groups into the principal components. A greater reduction of interferences between different MUAP waveforms was demonstrated by the use of FastICA. Therefore, it is suggested that FastICA could provide much better discrimination of the properties of MUAPTs for sEMG signal decomposition, i.e. waveforms, discharge intervals, etc., than not only PCA but also the original sEMG signals.  相似文献

Mechanical assistance on joint movement is generally beneficial; however, its effects on cooperative performance and muscle activity needs to be further explored. This study examined how motor performance and muscle activity are altered when mechanical assistance is provided during isometric force control of ramp-down and hold phases. Thirteen right-handed participants (age: 24.7 ± 1.8 years) performed trajectory tracking tasks. Participants were asked to maintain the reference magnitude of 47 N (REF) during isometric elbow flexion. The force was released to a step-down magnitude of either 75% REF or 50% REF and maintained, with and without mechanical assistance. The ramp-down durations of force release were set to 0.5, 2.5, or 5.0 s. Throughout the experiment, we measured the following: (1) the force output using load cells to compute force variability and overshoot ratio; (2) peak perturbation on the elbow movement using an accelerometer; (3) the surface electromyography (sEMG) from biceps brachii and triceps brachii muscles; and (4) EMG oscillation from the biceps brachii muscle in the bandwidth of 15–45 Hz. Our results indicated that mechanical assistance, which involved greater peak perturbation, demonstrated lower force variability than non-assistance (p < 0.01), while EMG oscillation in the biceps brachii muscle from 15 to 45 Hz was increased (p < 0.05). These findings imply that if assistive force is provided during isometric force control, the central nervous system actively tries to stabilize motor performance by controlling specific motor unit activity in the agonist muscle.  相似文献

Constant-force isometric muscle training is useful for increasing the maximal strength , rehabilitation and work-fatigue assessment. Earlier studies have shown that muscle fatigue characteristics can be used for evaluating muscle endurance limit. Study Objective: To predict muscle endurance time during isometric task using frequency spectrum characteristics of surface electromyography signals along with analysis of frequency spectrum shape and scale during fatigue accumulation. Method: Thirteen subjects performed isometric lateral raise at 60% MVC of deltoid (lateral) till endurance limit. Time windowed sEMG frequency spectrum was modelled using 2-parameter distributions namely Gamma and Weibull for spectrum analysis and endurance prediction. Results: Gamma distribution provided better spectrum fitting (P < 0.001) than Weibull distribution. Spectrum Distribution demonstrated no change in shape but shifted towards lower frequency with increase of magnitude at characteristic mode frequency. Support Vector Regression based algorithm was developed for endurance time estimation using features derived from fitted frequency spectrum. Time taken till endurance limit for acquired dataset 38.53 ± 17.33 s (Mean ± Standard Deviation) was predicted with error of 0.029 ± 4.19 s . R-square: 0.956, training and test sets RMSE was calculated as 3.96 and 4.29 s respectively. The application of the algorithm suggested that model required 70% of sEMG signal from maximum time of endurance for high prediction accuracy. Conclusion: Endurance Limit prediction algorithm was developed for quantification of endurance time for optimizing isometric training and rehabilitation. Our method could help personalize and change conventional training method of same weight and duration for all subjects with optimized training parameters, based upon individual sEMG activity.

In the present study the influence of speed of contraction on the interplay between recruitment and firing rate of motor units (MUs) was assessed. The surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal was recorded in nine healthy subjects from the right biceps brachii using a linear electrode array during ramp isometric contractions (from 0 to 100% of the maximal voluntary force, MVC) at 5, 10, and 20% MVC s(-1) (ramp phase), followed by 10 s of sustained MVC (hold phase). The median frequency (MDF), Root Mean Square (RMS) and conduction velocity (CV) of sEMG, were computed on adjacent epochs covering a force range of 5% MVC each. Full motor unit recruitment (FMUR) point was assessed as the force level at which MDF reached its maximum value; the MDF decay during the hold phase was taken as an index of localized muscle fatigue. At 5% MVC s(-1), FMUR was reached at 52.3% MVC. At 10%MVC s(-1) FMUR was achieved at 58% MVC; while at 20% MVC s(-1) FMUR point was located at 77% MVC, being statistically different from 5 and 10% MVCs(-1) ramps (p<0.05). The MDF decay was steeper at higher speed. CV modifications mirrored those reported for MDF. The RMS increased in a curvilinear fashion and the maximum value was always attained during the hold phase. Our findings suggest that MU recruitment strategies are significantly related to the speed of contraction even in a single muscle.  相似文献

The physiological behavior of the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle during early stage of fatigue is important as a reference for future clinical assessment of a pathologically altered muscle, as e.g. in carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study was to assess changes of force and surface electromyograms (sEMG) during early stage of fatigue of the APB. Thumb abduction force and sEMG derived from a multi-electrode array were recorded during isometric contraction. Electrode placement over the innervation zone (IZ) and the muscle tendon interface were avoided. The sEMGs of two adjacent electrode pairs were selected for the analysis, which yielded (a) motor unit conduction velocities (MUCV) derived from a correlation analysis between the EMGs and (b) mean frequencies obtained by using either fast Fourier (FMF) or Wavelet Transform (WMF). Early fatigue resulted in a relative decay rate of force (?2.1%1 s?1), MUCV (?1.5%1 s?1), FMF (?4.1%1 s?1), WMF (?3.7%1 s?1) and in a change of the power spectrum shape. Lower mean frequencies were observed at greater distances from the IZ independently of fatigue. The APB muscle seems to be fast fatigable and the relative decay rate of mean frequency was significantly larger than the one of force and MUCV.  相似文献

As no study has examined whether the branches of the latissimus dorsi are activated differently in different exercises, we investigated intramuscular differences of components of the latissimus dorsi during various shoulder isometric exercises. Seventeen male subjects performed four isometric exercises: shoulder extension, adduction, internal rotation, and shoulder depression. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to collect data from the medial and lateral components of the latissimus dorsi during the isometric exercises. Two-way repeated analysis of variance with two within-subject factors (exercise condition and muscle branch) was used to determine the significance of differences between the branches, and which branch was activated more with the exercise variation. The root mean squared sEMG values for the muscles were normalized using the modified isolation equation (%Isolation) and maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). Neither the %MVIC nor %Isolation data differed significantly between muscle branches, while there was a significant difference with exercise. %MVIC was significantly higher with shoulder extension, compared to the other isometric exercises. There was a significant correlation between exercise condition and muscle branch in the %Isolation data. Shoulder extension and adduction and internal rotation increased %Isolation of the medial latissimus dorsi more than shoulder depression. Shoulder depression had the highest value of %Isolation of the lateral latissimus dorsi compared to the other isometric exercises. Comparing the medial and lateral latissimus dorsi, the medial component was predominantly activated with shoulder extension, adduction, and internal rotation, and the lateral component with shoulder depression. Shoulder extension is effective for activating the latissimus dorsi regardless of the intramuscular branch.  相似文献

BackgroundWhen comparing neuromuscular activity between different individuals or different conditions by use of surface electromyography (sEMG) it is necessary to apply standardized assessment protocol. Most frequently used method is the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). However, the influence of body posture on sEMG activity during MVIC testing remains largely unknown.AimTo evaluate the MVIC method for sEMG normalization in supine versus standing positions for selected muscles of the lower extremity and trunk.MethodsTwelve healthy individuals participated; five females and seven males (age 22–51 yrs). sEMG signals were recorded bilaterally from mm tibialis anterior, gluteus medius, adductor longus, rectus abdominus, external oblique and internal oblique/transversus abdominus according to standardized test protocol. Two different body positions were used: supine and standing position.ResultsMVIC peak sEMG signal amplitudes did not differ systematically between supine and standing test positions. Pronounced inter-subject variability in MVIC reference sEMG activity were observed between participants, during both supine and standing test positions.ConclusionPresent data demonstrate that MVIC EMG normalization is a biomechanically stable procedure that can be performed in a reproducible manner for the major leg and trunk muscles when comparing supine vs. standing test positions.  相似文献

A sliding filament model for muscle contraction is extended by including an activation mechanism based on the hypothesis that the binding of calcium by a regulating protein in the myofibrils must occur before the rate constant governing the making of interactions between cross-bridges and thin filament sites can take on nonzero values. The magnitude of the rate constant is proportional to the amount of bound calcium. The model's isometric twitch and rise of force in an isometric tetanus are similar to the curves produced by real muscles. It redevelops force after a quick release in an isometric tetanus faster than the initial rise. Quick release experiments on the model during an isometric twitch show that the “active state” curve produced is different from the postulated calcium binding curve. The force developed by the model can be increased by a small quick stretch delivered soon after activation to values near the maximum generated in an isometric tetanus. Following the quick stretch, the force remains near the tetanic maximum for a long time even though the calcium binding curve rises to a peak and subsequently decays by about 50%. The model satisfies the constraint of shortening with a constant velocity under a constant load. Modifications can be made in the model so that it produces the delayed force changes following step length changes characteristic of insect fibrillar muscle.  相似文献
