Prolonged presentation of visually ambiguous figures leads to perceptual switching. Individual switching rates show great variability. The present study compares individuals with high versus low switching rates by investigating human scalp electroencephalogram and blink rates. Eight subjects viewed the Necker cube continuously and responded to perceptual switching by pressing a button. Frequent switchers showed characteristic occipital alpha and frontal theta band activity prior to a switch, whereas infrequent switchers did not. The alpha activity was specific to switching, the theta activity was generic to perceptual processing conditions. A negative correlation was observed between perceptual switching and blink rates. These results suggest that the ability to concentrate attentional effort on the task is responsible for the differences in perceptual switching rates  相似文献

We studied the relationship between perceptual switching in the Necker cube and long-distance transient phase synchronization in EEG. Transient periods of response related synchrony between parietal and frontal areas were observed. They start 800–600, ms prior to the switch response and occur in pairs. Four types of pairs could be distinguished, two of which are accompanied by transient alpha band activity in the occipital area. The results indicate that perceptual switching processes involve parietal and frontal areas; these are the ones that are normally associated with various cognitive processes. Sensory information in the visual areas is involved in some, but not in all, of switching processes. The intrinsic variability, as well as the participating areas, points to the role of strategic cognitive processes in perceptual switching.  相似文献

Current knowledge of saccade-blink interactions suggests that blinks have paradoxical effects on saccade generation. Blinks suppress saccade generation by attenuating the oculomotor drive command in structures like the superior colliculus (SC), but they also disinhibit the saccadic system by removing the potent inhibition of pontine omnipause neurons (OPNs). To better characterize these effects, we evoked the trigeminal blink reflex by delivering an air puff to one eye as saccades were evoked by sub-optimal stimulation of the SC. For every stimulation site, the peak and average velocities of stimulation with blink movements (SwBMs) were lower than stimulation-only saccades (SoMs), supporting the notion that the oculomotor drive is weakened in the presence of a blink. In contrast, the duration of the SwBMs was longer, consistent with the hypothesis that the blink-induced inhibition of the OPNs could prolong the window of time available for oculomotor commands to drive an eye movement. The amplitude of the SwBM could also be larger than the SoM amplitude obtained from the same site, particularly for cases in which blink-associated eye movements exhibited the slowest kinematics. The results are interpreted in terms of neural signatures of saccade-blink interactions.  相似文献

An ambiguous figure such as the Necker cube causes spontaneous perceptual switching (SPS). The mechanism of SPS in multistable perception has not yet been determined. Although early psychological studies suggested that SPS may be caused by fatigue or satiation of orientation, the neural mechanism of SPS is still unknown. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has shown that the dorsal attention network (DAN), which mainly controls voluntary attention, is involved in bistable perception of the Necker cube. To determine whether neural dynamics along the DAN cause SPS, we performed simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and fMRI during an SPS task with the Necker cube, with every SPS reported by pressing a button. This EEG–fMRI integrated analysis showed that (a) 3–4 Hz spectral EEG power modulation at fronto-central, parietal, and centro-parietal electrode sites sequentially appeared from 750 to 350 ms prior to the button press; and (b) activations correlating with the EEG modulation traveled along the DAN from the frontal to the parietal regions. These findings suggest that slow oscillation initiates SPS through global dynamics along the attentional system such as the DAN.  相似文献

Since the first observation of perceptual reversal by Necker, many theoretical approaches have been proposed. In a previous study, we showed that a positive wave appeared approximately 250 ms prior to the button press of the subjects, indicating perceptual reversal during the observation of the Necker cube figure. A basic difficulty in this type of study is the possible jitter in the latency of the button press due to the variability of the subjects' reaction time during a recording session. To overcome this difficulty, a pattern selection method based on the wavelet transform was proposed in the previous study. A dominant positive wavelet coefficient in the delta band was found to represent the perceptual-reversal-related positivity. In the present study, we aim to analyze the changes in the alpha frequency band during perceptual reversal by using the Necker cube. The RMS values of the alpha frequency band were measured for two time periods: ±3 SD around the mean peak latency of the perceptual-reversal-related positivity and a time window of the same length before the positive wave. We found significantly increased delta power and decreased alpha power during the perceptual-reversal-related positivity. Received: 29 March 1999 / Accepted in revised form: 15 October 1999  相似文献

In previous studies, a perceptual switching related potential was obtained during the observation of a multistable dynamic reversal pattern, where the averaging of the single responses was triggered by subjects pressing a button. The present methodological study aims to increase the signal quality of perceptual switching related potentials considering the dependence of the measurement method on the reaction time of the subject, which may vary significantly during a session, leading to low-amplitude waveform in the averaged event-related-potential (ERP). To overcome this problem in measuring the electrophysiological correlate of an internal event, a pattern selection method based on the wavelet transform (WT) is proposed to choose a subset of single ERPs with more homogenous latencies. Nine subjects observed a Necker cube and were instructed to press the button immediately after perceptual switching. A slow, low-amplitude positive wave with frontocentral amplitude maxima was observed around 250 ms prior to the button press. After the application of a 5 octave WT on single sweeps, the time-frequency coefficients obtained in each octave were averaged across trials. The most dominant feature representing the averaged ERP was the delta (0.5–4 Hz) coefficient occurring between 250 and 125 ms before the button press. By averaging the subset of the single sweeps containing this property, a sharpening and significant amplitude increase of the response peak was observed. Blinks profoundly interrupt visual input but are rarely noticed, perhaps because of blink suppression, a visual-sensitivity loss that begins immediately prior to blink onset. Blink suppression is thought to result from an extra-retinal signal that is associated with the blink motor command and may act to attenuate the sensory consequences of the motor action. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. They are challenging to study because any brain-activity changes resulting from an extra-retinal signal associated with the blink motor command are potentially masked by profound neural-activity changes caused by the retinal-illumination reduction that results from occlusion of the pupil by the eyelid. Here, we distinguished direct top-down effects of blink-associated motor signals on cortical activity from purely mechanical or optical effects of blinking on visual input by combining pupil-independent retinal stimulation with functional MRI (fMRI) in humans. Even though retinal illumination was kept constant during blinks, we found that blinking nevertheless suppressed activity in visual cortex and in areas of parietal and prefrontal cortex previously associated with awareness of environmental change. Our findings demonstrate active top-down modulation of visual processing during blinking, suggesting a possible mechanism by which blinks go unnoticed.  相似文献

The EEG of 10 right-handed healthy subjects preceding saccade and antisaccade with mean values of latency in the eye fixations period were selected and averaged. The positive potential P2 appearing on the fixation stimuly switching on and slow positive wave following after it were more prominent before antisaccades than normal saccades. Space-temporal analyses of presaccadic potentials showed that right frontal cortex was activated more before antisaccades. These findings suggest that right cortical hemisphere dominate in spatial attention and inhibition of automatic saccades to visual stimuli in the period of antisaccades preparing. During the period of central fixations "intermediate" positivity potentials, developing in 600-400 ms prior to saccade or antisaccade onset, were find out. These potentials were predominantly recorded in the left frontal and frontosagittal cortical areas. The obtained evidence suggest that "intermediate" positive potentials a period related to the process of motor attention, anticipation and decision making in the period of eyes fixation.  相似文献

Blinks are generally suppressed during a task that requires visual attention and tend to occur immediately before or after the task when the timing of its onset and offset are explicitly given. During the viewing of video stories, blinks are expected to occur at explicit breaks such as scene changes. However, given that the scene length is unpredictable, there should also be appropriate timing for blinking within a scene to prevent temporal loss of critical visual information. Here, we show that spontaneous blinks were highly synchronized between and within subjects when they viewed the same short video stories, but were not explicitly tied to the scene breaks. Synchronized blinks occurred during scenes that required less attention such as at the conclusion of an action, during the absence of the main character, during a long shot and during repeated presentations of a similar scene. In contrast, blink synchronization was not observed when subjects viewed a background video or when they listened to a story read aloud. The results suggest that humans share a mechanism for controlling the timing of blinks that searches for an implicit timing that is appropriate to minimize the chance of losing critical information while viewing a stream of visual events.  相似文献

Background

It has been discussed that neural phase-synchrony across distant cortical areas (or global phase-synchrony) was correlated with various aspects of consciousness. The generating process of the synchrony, however, remains largely unknown. As a first step, we investigate transient process of global phase-synchrony, focusing on phase-synchronized clusters. We hypothesize that the phase-synchronized clusters are dynamically organized before global synchrony and clustering patterns depend on perceptual conditions.

Methods

In an EEG study, Kitajo reported that phase-synchrony across distant cortical areas was selectively enhanced by top-down attention around 4 Hz in Necker cube perception. Here, we further analyzed the phase-synchronized clusters using hierarchical clustering which sequentially binds up the nearest electrodes based on similarity of phase locking between the cortical signals. First, we classified dominant components of the phase-synchronized clusters over time. We then investigated how the phase-synchronized clusters change with time, focusing on their size and spatial structure.

Results

Phase-locked clusters organized a stable spatial pattern common to the perceptual conditions. In addition, the phase-locked clusters were modulated transiently depending on the perceptual conditions and the time from the perceptual switch. When top-down attention succeeded in switching perception as subjects intended, independent clusters at frontal and occipital areas grew to connect with each other around the time of the perceptual switch. However, the clusters in the occipital and left parietal areas remained divided when top-down attention failed in switching perception. When no primary biases exist, the cluster in the occipital area grew to its maximum at the time of the perceptual switch within the occipital area.

Conclusions

Our study confirmed the existence of stable phase-synchronized clusters. Furthermore, these clusters were transiently connected with each other. The connecting pattern depended on subjects’ internal states. These results suggest that subjects’ attentional states are associated with distinct spatio-temporal patterns of the phase-locked clusters.

A stimulus that is flashed around the time of a saccade tends to be mislocalized in the direction of the saccade target. Our question is whether the mislocalization is related to the position of the saccade target within the image or to the gaze position at the end of the saccade. We separated the two with a visual illusion that influences the perceived distance to the target of the saccade and thus saccade endpoint without affecting the perceived position of the saccade target within the image. We asked participants to make horizontal saccades from the left to the right end of the shaft of a Müller-Lyer figure. Around the time of the saccade, we flashed a bar at one of five possible positions and asked participants to indicate its location by touching the screen. As expected, participants made shorter saccades along the fins-in (<–>) configuration than along the fins-out (>–<) configuration of the figure. The illusion also influenced the mislocalization pattern during saccades, with flashes presented with the fins-out configuration being perceived beyond flashes presented with the fins-in configuration. The difference between the patterns of mislocalization for bars flashed during the saccade for the two configurations corresponded quantitatively with a prediction based on compression towards the saccade endpoint considering the magnitude of the effect of the illusion on saccade amplitude. We conclude that mislocalization is related to the eye position at the end of the saccade, rather than to the position of the saccade target within the image.  相似文献

Visual targets were presented monocularly to the leading and nonleading eyes. The complex of rapid positive and negative potentials was studied using the reverse summation from the onset of saccades. The latencies of saccades and peak latencies of the averaged presaccadic potentials were measured. The dependence of the saccade latencies and peak latencies of the complex of potentials on stimulation of the leading or nonleading eye and saccade direction was not simple and was largely determined by the individual profile of asymmetry. It is suggested that during stimulation of the leading eye the processes of attention fixation and switching as well as of the space visual processing are faster than during stimulation of the nonleading eye. Thus, the leading role of the right eye is reflected not only in fixation processes but also in movement anticipation.  相似文献

When human subjects are presented with a pair of visual targets that alternate periodically, they track the targets with rapid eye movements known as saccades. In previous work we demonstrated that at low pacing rates (<0.5 Hz), saccades have a latency of about 180 ms, and the latencies are uncorrelated from trial to trial. At high pacing rates (>0.6 Hz), latencies are much shorter: subjects make predictive saccades that anticipate target motion. The predictive latencies are correlated and appear to form a fractional Brownian motion. Here we confirm this finding by examining the rate of decay of nonlinear forecasting of predictive latencies. We further characterize the nature of predictive saccade latencies through the use of detrended fluctuation analysis and surrogate data. These results lead us to conclude that predictive saccades may exhibit a form of self-organized criticality, which enables rapid response to changes in stimulus timing. We provide an experimental demonstration of this.  相似文献

Recent studies provide evidence for task-specific influences on saccadic eye movements. For instance, saccades exhibit higher peak velocity when the task requires coordinating eye and hand movements. The current study shows that the need to process task-relevant visual information at the saccade endpoint can be, in itself, sufficient to cause such effects. In this study, participants performed a visual discrimination task which required a saccade for successful completion. We compared the characteristics of these task-related saccades to those of classical target-elicited saccades, which required participants to fixate a visual target without performing a discrimination task. The results show that task-related saccades are faster and initiated earlier than target-elicited saccades. Differences between both saccade types are also noted in their saccade reaction time distributions and their main sequences, i.e., the relationship between saccade velocity, duration, and amplitude.

The temporal stability of saccade latency, and the effects of training, particularly in “express saccade makers” (ESMs), has received little attention. ESMs are healthy, naïve, adults, who persist in executing very many low latency “express saccades” (ES; saccades with latency of 80 ms to 130 ms), in conditions designed to suppress such responses. We investigated the stability of ES production (%ES) in 59 ESM and 54 non-ESM participants in overlap tasks. Within a single session, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for %ES in two runs of 200 trials was 0.97 (p<0.001); participants in whom >30% of saccades over the two runs were ES, were classified as ESMs. For 60 participants tested over two sessions 12 weeks apart, and 30 participants tested in three sessions over approximately six months, the ICC for %ES was uniformly high (0.95, p<0.001 and 0.97, p<0.001 respectively) and participants behaved consistently with their initial classification. Fourteen participants (7 ESMs) were then exposed to training consisting of either gap or overlap tasks. Training increased %ES in both groups. However, when tested in overlap tasks, it was not sufficient to transform Normal participants into ESMs. We conclude that the pattern of saccade behaviour exhibited by ESMs constitutes a stable and distinct oculomotor phenotype.  相似文献

Perceptual phenomena that occur around the time of a saccade, such as peri-saccadic mislocalization or saccadic suppression of displacement, have often been linked to mechanisms of spatial stability. These phenomena are usually regarded as errors in processes of trans-saccadic spatial transformations and they provide important tools to study these processes. However, a true understanding of the underlying brain processes that participate in the preparation for a saccade and in the transfer of information across it requires a closer, more quantitative approach that links different perceptual phenomena with each other and with the functional requirements of ensuring spatial stability. We review a number of computational models of peri-saccadic spatial perception that provide steps in that direction. Although most models are concerned with only specific phenomena, some generalization and interconnection between them can be obtained from a comparison. Our analysis shows how different perceptual effects can coherently be brought together and linked back to neuronal mechanisms on the way to explaining vision across saccades.  相似文献

In contrast to the well-established roles of the striatum in movement generation and value-based decisions, its contributions to perceptual decisions lack direct experimental support. Here, we show that electrical microstimulation in the monkey caudate nucleus influences both choice and saccade response time on a visual motion discrimination task. Within a drift-diffusion framework, these effects consist of two components. The perceptual component biases choices toward ipsilateral targets, away from the neurons' predominantly contralateral response fields. The choice bias is consistent with a nonzero starting value of the diffusion process, which increases and decreases decision times for contralateral and ipsilateral choices, respectively. The nonperceptual component decreases and increases nondecision times toward contralateral and ipsilateral targets, respectively, consistent with the caudate's role in saccade generation. The results imply a causal role for the caudate in perceptual decisions used to select saccades that may be distinct from its role in executing those saccades. VIDEO ABSTRACT:  相似文献

The EEG of 10 right-handed subjects preceding saccades with mean values of latent periods were selected and averaged. Two standard paradigms of presentation of visual stimuli (central fixation stimulus-peripheral target succession): with a 200-ms inerstimulus interval (GAP) and successive single step (SS). During the period of central fixation, two kinds of positive potentials were observed: fast potentials of "inermediate" positivity (IP) developing 600-400 ms prior to saccade onset and fast potentials of "leading" positivity (LP), which immediately preceded the offset of the central fixation stimulus. Peak latency of the LP potentials was 300 ms prior to saccade onset in the SS paradigm and 400 ms in the GAP paradigm. These potentials were predominantly recorded in the frontal and frontosagittal cortical areas. Decrease in the latency by 30-50 ms in the GAP paradigm was associated with more pronounced positive potentials during the fixation period and absence of the initiation potential P-1' (or decrease in its amplitude). The obtained evidence suggest that the fast positive presaccadic potentials are of a complex nature related to attention, anticipation, motor preparation, decision making, saccadic initiation, and backward afferentation.  相似文献

Background

Saccadic eye movements are used to rapidly align the fovea with the image of objects of interest in peripheral vision. We have recently shown that in children there is a high preponderance of quick latency but poorly planned saccades that consistently fall short of the target goal. The characteristics of these multiple saccades are consistent with a lack of proper inhibitory control of cortical oculomotor areas on the brainstem saccade generation circuitry.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In the present paper, we directly tested this assumption by using single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to transiently disrupt neuronal activity in the frontal eye fields (FEF) and supplementary eye fields (SEF) in adults performing a gap saccade task. The results showed that the incidence of multiple saccades was increased for ispiversive but not contraversive directions for the right and left FEF, the left SEF, but not for the right SEF. Moreover, this disruption was most substantial during the ∼50 ms period around the appearance of the peripheral target. A control condition in which the dorsal motor cortex was stimulated demonstrated that this was not due to any non-specific effects of the TMS influencing the spatial distribution of attention.

Conclusions/Significance

Taken together, the results are consistent with a direction-dependent role of the FEF and left SEF in delaying the release of saccadic eye movements until they have been fully planned.  相似文献
