In this study, we examined whether athletes, who typically replace only approximately 50% of their fluid losses during moderate-duration endurance exercise, should attempt to replace their Na+ losses to maintain extracellular fluid volume. Six male cyclists performed three 90-min rides at 65% of peak O2 uptake in a 32 degrees C environment and ingested either no fluid (NF), 1.21 of water (W), or saline (S) containing 100 mmol of NaCl x l(-1) to replace their electrolyte losses. Both W and S conditions decreased final heart rates by approximately 10 betas min(-1) (P<0.005) and reduced falls in plasma volume (PV) by approximately 4% (P<0.05). Maintenance of PV after 10 min in the W trial prevented further rises in plasma concentrations of Na+ [Na+], Cl- and protein but in the S and NF trials, plasma [Na+] continued to increase by approximately 4 mEq x l(-1). Differences in plasma [Na+] had little effect on the approximately 2.4 l fluid, approximately 120 mEq Na+ and approximately 50 mEq K+ losses in sweat and urine in the three trials. The main effects of W and S were on body fluid shifts. During the NF trial, PV and interstitial fluid (ISF) and intracellular fluid (ICF) volumes decreased by approximately 0.1, 1.2 and 1.0 l, respectively. In the W trial, the approximately 1.2 l fluid and approximately 120 mEq Na+ losses contracted the ISF volume, and in the S trial, ISF volume was maintained by the movement of water from the ICF. Since the W and S trials were equally effective in maintaining PV, Na+ ingestion may not be of much advantage to athletes who typically replace only approximately 50% of their fluid losses during competitive endurance exercise.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged hypoxia on body water distribution was studied in four unanesthetized adult goats (Capra lircus) at sea level and after 16 days in a hypobaric chamber [(380 Torr, 5,500 m, 24 +/- 1 degrees C); arterial PO2 = 27 +/- 2 (SE) Torr]. Total body water (TBW), extracellular fluid volume (ECF), and plasma volume (PV) were determined with 3H2O, [14C]inulin, and indocyanine green dye, respectively. Blood volume (BV) [BV = 100PV/(100 - hematocrit)], erythrocyte volume (RCV) (RCV = BV - PV), and intracellular fluid (ICF) (ICF = TBW - ECF) and interstitial fluid (ISF) (ISF = ECF - PV) volumes were calculated. Hypoxia resulted in increased pulmonary ventilation and arterial pH and decreased arterial PCO2 and PO2 (P less than 0.05). In addition, body mass (-7.1%), TBW (-9.1%), and ICF volume (-14.4%) all decreased, whereas ECF (+11.7%) and ISF (+27.7%) volumes increased (P less than 0.05). The decrease in TBW accounted for 89% of the loss of body mass. Although PV decreased significantly (-15.3%), BV was unchanged because of an offsetting increase in RCV (+39.5%; P less than 0.05). We conclude that, in adult goats, prolonged hypobaric hypoxia results in decreases in TBW volume, ICF volume, and PV, with concomitant increases in ECF and ISF volumes.  相似文献

We analyzed the changes in water content and electrolyte concentrations in the vascular space during graded exercise of short duration. Six male volunteers exercised on a cycle ergometer at 20 degrees C (relative humidity = 30%) as exercise intensity was increased stepwise until voluntary exhaustion. Blood samples were collected at exercise intensities of 29, 56, 70, and 95% of maximum aerobic power (VO2max). A curvilinear relationship between exercise intensity and Na+ concentration in plasma ([Na+]p) was observed. [Na+]p significantly increased at 70% VO2max and at 95% VO2max was approximately 8 meq/kgH2O higher than control. The change in lactate concentration in plasma ([Lac-]p) was closely correlated with the change in [Na+]p (delta[Na+]p = 0.687 delta[Lac-]p + 1.79, r = 0.99). The change in [Lac-]p was also inversely correlated with the change in HCO3- concentration in plasma (delta[HCO3-]p = -0.761 delta[Lac-]p + 0.22, r = -1.00). At an exercise intensity of 95% VO2max, 60% of the increase in plasma osmolality (Posmol) was accounted for by an increase in [Na+]p. These results suggest that lactic acid released into the vascular space from active skeletal muscles reacts with [HCO3-]p to produce CO2 gas and Lac-. The data raise the intriguing notion that increase in [Na+]p during exercise may be caused by elevated Lac-.  相似文献

Sweat Na(+) concentration ([Na(+)]) varies greatly among individuals and is particularly high in cystic fibrosis (CF). The purpose of this study was to determine whether excess sweat [Na(+)] differentially impacts thirst drive and other physiological responses during progressive dehydration via exercise in the heat. Healthy subjects with high-sweat [Na(+)] (SS) (91.0 ± 17.3 mmol/l), Controls with average sweat [Na(+)] (43.7 ± 9.9 mmol/l), and physically active CF patients with very high sweat [Na(+)] (132.6 ± 6.4 mmol/l) cycled in the heat without drinking until 3% dehydration. Serum osmolality increased less (P < 0.05) in CF (6.1 ± 4.3 mosmol/kgH(2)O) and SS (8.4 ± 3.0 mosmol/kgH(2)O) compared with Control (14.8 ± 3.5 mosmol/kgH(2)O). Relative change in plasma volume was greater (P < 0.05) in CF (-19.3 ± 4.5%) and SS (-18.8 ± 3.1%) compared with Control (-14.3 ± 2.3%). Thirst during exercise and changes in plasma levels of vasopressin, angiotensin II, and aldosterone relative to percent dehydration were not different among groups. However, ad libitum fluid replacement was 40% less, and serum NaCl concentration was lower for CF compared with SS and Control during recovery. Despite large variability in sweat electrolyte loss, thirst appears to be appropriately maintained during exercise in the heat as a linear function of dehydration, with relative contributions from hyperosmotic and hypovolemic stimuli dependent upon the magnitude of salt lost in sweat. CF exhibit lower ad libitum fluid restoration following dehydration, which may reflect physiological cues directed at preservation of salt balance over volume restoration.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of a short-term aerobic training program in a hot environment on thermoregulation, blood parameters, sweat secretion and composition in tropic-dwellers who have been exposed to passive heat. Sixteen healthy Malaysian-Malay male volunteers underwent heat acclimation (HA) by exercising on a bicycle ergometer at 60% of VO2max for 60 min each day in a hot environment (Ta: 31.1+/-0.1 degrees C, rh: 70.0+/-4.4%) for 14 days. All parameters mentioned above were recorded on Day 1 and at the end of HA (Day 16). On these two days, subjects rested for 10 min, then cycled at 60% of VO2max for 60 min and rested again for 20 min (recovery) in an improvised heat chamber. Rectal temperature (Tre), mean skin temperature (Tsk) heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), thermal sensation (TS), local sweat rate and percent dehydration were recorded during the test. Sweat concentration was analysed for sodium [Na+]sweat and potassium. Blood samples were analysed for biochemical changes, electrolytes and hematologic indices. Urine samples were collected before and after each test and analysed for electrolytes. After the period of acclimation the percent dehydration during exercise significantly increased from 1.77+/-0.09% (Day 1) to 2.14+/-0.07% (Day 16). Resting levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit and red blood cells decreased significantly while [Na+]sweat increased significantly. For Tre and Tsk there were no differences at rest. Tre, HR, RPE, TS, plasma lactate concentration, hemoglobin and hematocrit at the 40th min of exercise were significantly lower after the period of acclimation but mean corpuscular hemoglobin and serum osmolality were significantly higher while no difference was seen in [Na+]sweat and Tsk. It can be concluded that tropic-dwelling subjects, although exposed to prolonged passive heat exposure, were not fully heat acclimatized. To achieve further HA, they should gradually expose themselves to exercise-heat stress in a hot environment.  相似文献

The intracellular concentrations of sodium [Na+] and potassium [K+] and the water content in human erythrocytes were investigated in 21 male runners before and after a marathon. From 2 to 5 min after the race, the intra-erythrocyte [K+] was significantly decreased (p less than 0.001) by 7% whereas the plasma [K+], intra-erythrocyte [Na+] and the erythrocyte water content were unchanged. The change in the intra-erythrocyte [K+] observed immediately after the marathon, was negatively correlated with the race time (r = -0.44; p less than 0.05). Furthermore, the change in the plasma [K+] (r = -0.64; p less than 0.001) and the amount of K+ excreted in the urine during the race (r = 0.54; p less than 0.05) were also, respectively, negatively and positively correlated with the race time. It is concluded that during prolonged physical exercise the erythrocytes could serve as a kind of K+ reservoir that is drained with increasing magnitude of body K+ loss. This might explain why in the faster marathon runners, in whom the urinary K+ loss is smaller and the K+ intake is greater than in the slower runners during race, the intra-erythrocyte [K+] is unchanged after a marathon whereas in the slower runners it is decreased.  相似文献

We investigated the in vivo salinity-dependent behavior of transepithelial potential (TEP) in Fundulus heteroclitus (3-9 g) using indwelling coelomic catheters, a technique which was validated against blood catheter measurements in a larger species (Opsanus beta; 35-70 g). In seawater (SW)-acclimated killifish, TEP was +23 mV (inside positive), but changed to -39 mV immediately after transfer to freshwater (FW). Acute transfer to dilute salinities produced a TEP profile, which rapidly attenuated as salinity increased (0, 2.5, 5 and 10% SW), with cross-over to positive values between 20 and 40% SW, and a linear increase thereafter (60, 80 and 100% SW). TEP response profiles were also recorded after acute transfer to comparable dilutions of 500 mmol L(-1) NaCl, NaNO3, Na gluconate, choline chloride, N-methyl-D-glutamate (NMDG) chloride, or 1,100 mosmol kg(-1) mannitol. These indicated high non-specific cation permeability and low non-specific anion permeability without influence of osmolality in SW-acclimated killifish. While there was a small electrogenic component in high salinity, a Na+ diffusion potential predominated at all salinities due to the low P Cl/P Na (0.23) of the gills. The very negative TEP in FW was attenuated in a linear fashion by log elevations in [Ca2+] such that P Cl/P Na increased to 0.73 at 10 mmol L(-1). SW levels of [K+] or [Mg2+] also increased the TEP, but none of these cations alone restored the positive TEP of SW-acclimated killifish. The very negative TEP in FW attenuated over the first 12 h of exposure and by 24-30 h reached +3 mV, representative of long-term FW-acclimated animals; this reflected a progressive increase in P Cl/P Na from 0.23 to 1.30, probably associated with closing of the paracellular shunt pathway. Thereafter, the TEP in FW-acclimated killifish was unresponsive to [Ca2+] (also to [K+], [Mg2+], or chloride salts of choline and NMDG), but became more positive at SW levels of [Na+]. Killifish live in a variable salinity environment and are incapable of gill Cl(-) uptake in FW. We conclude that the adaptive significance of the TEP patterns is that changeover to a very negative TEP in FW will immediately limit Na+ loss while not interfering with active Cl(-) uptake because there is none. Keeping the shunt permeability high for a few hours means that killifish can return to SW and instantaneously re-activate their NaCl excretion mechanism.  相似文献

Exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) is a well know electrolyte disorder in endurance athletes. Although fluid overload is the most like etiology, recent studies, however, argued whether EAH is a disorder of vasopressin secretion. The aims of the present study were to investigate (i) the prevalence of EAH in male ultra-marathoners and (ii) whether fluid intake, aldosterone or vasopressin, as measured by copeptin, were associated with post-race serum sodium concentration ([Na+]). In 50 male ultra-marathoners in a 100?km ultra-marathon, serum [Na+], aldosterone, copeptin, serum and urine osmolality, and body mass were measured pre- and post-race. Fluid intake, renal function parameters and urine excretion were measured. No athlete developed EAH. Copeptin and aldosterone increased; a significant correlation was found between the change in copeptin and the change in serum [Na+], no correlation was found between aldosterone and serum [Na+]. Serum [Na+] increased by 1.6%; body mass decreased by 1.9?kg. The change in serum [Na+] and body mass correlated significantly and negatively. The fluid intake of ~?0.58?l/h was positively related to the change in body mass and negatively to both post-race serum [Na+] and the change in serum [Na+]. We conclude that serum [Na+] was maintained by both the mechanisms of fluid intake and the hormonal regulation of vasopressin.  相似文献

Euryhaline teleosts regulate their internal osmotic and ionic status across a wide range of external salinities. Studies often rely on measurements on plasma when osmoregulatory status is perturbed, whereas tissue measurements are used for small fish with limited blood volume. However, a direct comparison is lacking for plasma and various tissues. In the present study the relationships between plasma, white muscle and carcass were examined for a range of osmoregulatory variables in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) following challenge with an acute (24 h) transfer from freshwater to a hyper-osmotic salinity of either 25 or 35. Significant increases in plasma osmolality, [Na+], [Cl?], [Ca2+], and [Mg2+] were observed when salinity was increased, but plasma [K+] was unaffected. The water content of both tissues showed reciprocal changes to plasma osmolality. The carcass content of all ions measured showed a significant increase at the highest ambient salinity. In white muscle, Na+, K+ and Mg2+ showed significant increases with external salinity, but Cl? and Ca2+ were unaffected. Measurements from both tissues can provide reliable surrogates for most of the plasma osmoregulatory variables except Cl? and Ca2+ when using white muscle tissue. In the case of internal regulation of K+ both tissues provide sensitive and quantitatively similar indicators of environmental salinity disturbance, whereas plasma does not.  相似文献

Effects of sprint training on plasma K+ concentration ([K+]) regulation during intense exercise and on muscle Na+-K+-ATPase were investigated in subjects with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) under real-life conditions and in nondiabetic subjects (CON). Eight subjects with T1D and seven CON undertook 7 wk of sprint cycling training. Before training, subjects cycled to exhaustion at 130% peak O2 uptake. After training, identical work was performed. Arterialized venous blood was drawn at rest, during exercise, and at recovery and analyzed for plasma glucose, [K+], Na+ concentration ([Na+]), catecholamines, insulin, and glucagon. A vastus lateralis biopsy was obtained before and after training and assayed for Na+-K+-ATPase content ([3H]ouabain binding). Pretraining, Na+-K+-ATPase content and the rise in plasma [K+] ([K+]) during maximal exercise were similar in T1D and CON. However, after 60 min of recovery in T1D, plasma [K+], glucose, and glucagon/insulin were higher and plasma [Na+] was lower than in CON. Training increased Na+-K+-ATPase content and reduced [K+] in both groups (P < 0.05). These variables were correlated in CON (r = -0.65, P < 0.05) but not in T1D. This study showed first that mildly hypoinsulinemic subjects with T1D can safely undertake intense exercise with respect to K+ regulation; however, elevated [K+] will ensue in recovery unless insulin is administered. Second, sprint training improved K+ regulation during intense exercise in both T1D and CON groups; however, the lack of correlation between plasma delta[K+] and Na+-K+-ATPase content in T1D may indicate different relative contributions of K+-regulatory mechanisms.  相似文献

Three groups of White Plymouth Rock laying hens were adapted to three levels of dietary NaCl: low-NaCl food with tap water (LOW), high-NaCl food (1% NaCl w/w added) with tap water (HT), and high-NaCl food with 0.5% NaCl for drinking (HS). The birds were subjected to water deprivation (dehydration) for 18 days. Blood sampling was done at 2-4 day intervals. Plasma concentrations of arginine vasotocin (AVT), prolactin (PRL), aldosterone (ALDO) and corticosterone (CS) were determined by radioimmunoassay. Plasma osmolality, sodium, chloride, and potassium were also determined. In the normally hydrated hens fully adapted to the diets, there was a stepwise increase from LOW to HS in plasma osmolality (305, 315, 332 mOsm, for LOW, HT and HS, respectively), [Na+] (144, 153, 161 mM) and [Cl-] (109, 119, 127 mM) as well as in [AVT] (6, 14, 18 pg/ml) and [PRL] (16, 24, 34 ng/ml). Regressing [AVT] on osmolality gave a slope of 0.30 pg . ml-1/mOsm and a threshold of 273 mOsm. The slope of [PRL] on osmolality was 0.73 ng . ml-1/mOsm. The correlation coefficient of [AVT] and [PRL] was 0.67. LOW had high [ALDO] (165 pg/ml) which was suppressed to low levels in HT and HS (5-8 pg/ml), while [CS] was the same in all groups (0.9-1.1 ng/ml). Plasma [K+] was decreased in the high-NaCl groups (5.8 mM in LOW, 4.4 and 4.7 mM in HT and HS). Dehydration resulted within 2 days generally in a sharp (5-15%) increase in osmolality, [Na+] and [Cl-], which thereafter increased more slowly during the remaining 16 days in all groups, with the slowest increase in LOW. The levels of osmolality [Na+] and [Cl-] were 5% lower in LOW than in HT and HS, which showed the same levels during the dehydration period. Plasma [AVT] and [PRL] increased 2-4 fold within 2 days of dehydration; [AVT] reached a plateau at 29 pg/ml in all groups, but [PRL] continued to rise in all groups, fastest in LOW, reaching similar levels in all groups after 14-18 days of dehydration, about 85 ng/ml. The correlation coefficient of [AVT] and [PRL] was decreased by half (to 0.32) during dehydration. Plasma [ALDO] increased in all groups with dehydration, 1.7 fold in LOW and 3-6 fold in HT and HS, but the levels reached in HT and HS were only 15-30% of that seen in LOW.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

In benzene-exposed Ucides cordatus acclimated for 96 h to 9 and 34 per thousand SW, haemolymph, urine and gastric juice are isosmotic with each other, but differ significantly in osmolality from external media. In both salinities, under benzene action, urine K+ excretion and calcium absorption are increased significantly, whereas Na+ absorption and Mg2+ excretion show U/B ratios similar to control values. In 9 per thousand SW, some ionic exchanges via benzene-exposed gills are possibly hastened. Benzene exposure decreases significantly branchial chamber water osmolality, [Na+] and [K+], whereas [Ca2+] and [Mg2+] are unaffected. However, faster medium exchange presumably occurs in 34 per thousand SW, both crab groups show branchial chamber water osmotic and ionic concentrations similar to surrounding medium. Benzene exposure unaffected gastric juice composition. In both media, [Ca2+] and [Mg2] accumulate several times higher than surrounding media, and [Na+] and [K+] are significantly hypo-ionic to haemolymph. Na+ and K+ G/H ratios are lower in crabs acclimated to 34 per thousand SW than in crabs acclimated to 9 per thousand SW. Drinking rates are enhanced by benzene exposure and are higher at 34 per thousand SW than in seawater isosmotic with the haemolymph (26 per thousand SW). Benzene exposure affects significantly osmoregulatory capability, slowing haemolymph dilution after transfer to clean 9 per thousand SW. Lower haemolymph dilution rate accounts for higher osmolality, but 48 h after transfer there is no recovery like in control crabs. Haemolymph transfusion experiments suggest an interaction among effects of benzene and hormonal factors, possibly on water influx.  相似文献

Administration of oral contraceptive (OC) has been associated with body fluid retention and in high doses over a long period, promotes hypertension. This present investigation tests the hypothesis that the dietary calcium supplementation increases salt and water excretion in OC (norgestre/ethinylestradiol) treated 32 female albino rats randomly distributed into four (1-4) groups of 8 rats each: Control, OC-treated, OC-treated+ Calcium diet fed and Calcium diet fed only respectively. OC was administered to the appropriate groups by gavage. Experimental diet contained 2.5% calcium supplement. Plasma and urinary [Na+] [K+] were evaluated after 8 weeks of experimentation by flame photometry and plasma [Ca2+] by colorimetric method. OC-treatment induced a significant fall in urinary [Na+]. Water excretion was significantly reduced in these animals (control, 3.1±0.56 Vs OC-treated rats, 1.47±0.16). OC-treated rats had significantly higher plasma [K+] compared to control rats. Calcium supplementation induced increases in plasma [Na+], [K+] and augmented urinary Na+ excretion (OC-treated + Ca2+ diet Vs OC-treated only). Compared with the control rats, high Ca2+ diet fed rats exhibited significant increases in plasma [Na+] and [K+] accompanied by significant decreases in urinary H20 excretion. These results strongly suggest that high dietary Ca2+ supplementation increases salt and water excretion in OC-treated rats and potentially moderates fluid retention and blood pressure in these animals, and may be of clinical significance in OC-induced abnormal fluid retention and perhaps OC-induced hypertension. Keywords: Hypercalcemic-diet, Oral contraceptive, Plasma electrolytes, Hypertension, Female-albino-rats.  相似文献

Role of osmolality and plasma volume during rehydration in humans   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
To determine how the sodium content of ingested fluids affects drinking and the restoration of the body fluid compartments after dehydration, we studied six subjects during 4 h of recovery from 90-110 min of a heat [36 degrees C, less than 30% relative humidity (rh)] and exercise (40% maximal aerobic power) exposure, which caused body weight to decrease by 2.3%. During the 1st h, subjects rested seated without any fluids in a thermoneutral environment (28 degrees C, less than 30% rh) to allow the body fluid compartments to stabilize. Over the next 3 h, subjects rehydrated ad libitum using tap water and capsules containing either placebo (H2O-R) or 0.45 g NaCl (Na-R) per 100 ml water. During the 3-h rehydration period, subjects restored 68% of the lost water during H2O-R, whereas they restored 82% during Na-R (P less than 0.05). Urine volume was greater in H2O-R than in Na-R; thus only 51% of the lost water was retained during H2O-R, whereas 71% was retained during Na-R (P less than 0.05). Plasma osmolality was elevated throughout the rehydration period in Na-R, whereas it returned to the control level by 30 min in H2O-R (P less than 0.05). Changes in free water clearance followed changes in plasma osmolality. The restoration of plasma volume during Na-R was 174% of that lost. During H2O-R it was 78%, which seemed to be sufficient to diminish volume-dependent dipsogenic stimulation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The presence of negatively charged, impermeant proteins in the plasma space alters the distribution of diffusible ions in the plasma and interstitial fluid (ISF) compartments to preserve electroneutrality. We have derived a new mathematical model to define the quantitative interrelationship between the Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium, the osmolality of body fluid compartments, and the plasma water Na+ concentration ([Na+]pw) and validated the model using empirical data from the literature. The new model can account for the alterations in all ionic concentrations (Na+ and non-Na+ ions) between the plasma and ISF due to Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium. In addition to the effect of Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium on Na+ distribution between plasma and ISF, our model predicts that the altered distribution of osmotically active non-Na+ ions will also have a modulating effect on the [Na+]pw by affecting the distribution of H2O between the plasma and ISF. The new physiological insights provided by this model can for the first time provide a basis for understanding quantitatively how changes in the plasma protein concentration modulate the [Na+]pw. Moreover, this model defines all known physiological factors that may modulate the [Na+]pw and is especially helpful in conceptually understanding the pathophysiological basis of the dysnatremias.  相似文献

Changes in blood composition, renal function, aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone (ADH) concentrations were investigated in 10 untrained male subjects when swimming (60 min at a heart rate of about 155 beats.min-1, water temperature 28 degrees C) and during the subsequent 3 h in a sitting position. Many specific effects of either exercise or immersion were abolished or attenuated; no significant changes in plasma aldosterone, [ADH], [K+], [Cl-], or of urinary volume, glomerular filtration rate, free water or osmolar clearance were observed. The urine was diluted resulting in lowered [Na+]. In blood some quantities which are only slightly influenced by immersion increased during swimming ([Na+], [Lac-], [H+], osmolality, [creatinine]). Exercise induced plasma volume loss, calculated from increasing [Hb], was small (110 ml), probably because interstitial fluid enters the vascular space during the initial phase of immersion. One might anticipate that the training effects on fluid and electrolyte metabolism and circulation are different when swimming and when performing endurance sports on land.  相似文献

Ventral medullary extracellular fluid pH and PCO2 during hypoxemia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We designed experiments to study changes in ventral medullary extracellular fluid (ECF) PCO2 and pH during hypoxemia. Measurements were made in chloralose-urethan-anesthetized spontaneously breathing cats (n = 12) with peripherial chemodenervation. Steady-state measurements were made during normoxemia [arterial PO2 (PaO2) = 106 Torr], hypoxemia (PaO2 = 46 Torr), and recovery (PaO2 = 105 Torr), with relatively constant arterial PCO2 (approximately 44 Torr). Mean values of ventilation were 945, 683, and 1,037 ml/min during normoxemia, hypoxemia, and recovery from hypoxemia, respectively. Ventilatory depression occurred in each cat during hypoxemia. Mean values of medullary ECF PCO2 were 57.7 +/- 7.2 (SD), 59.4 +/- 9.7, and 57.4 +/- 7.2 Torr during normoxemia, hypoxemia, and recovery to normoxemia, respectively; respective values for ECF [H+] were 60.9 +/- 8.0, 64.4 +/- 11.6, and 62.9 +/- 9.2 neq/l. Mean values of calculated ECF [HCO3-] were 22.8 +/- 3.0, 21.7 +/- 3.3, and 21.4 +/- 3.1 meq/l during normoxemia, hypoxemia, and recovery, respectively. Changes in medullary ECF PCO2 and [H+] were not statistically significant. Therefore hypoxemia caused ventilatory depression independent of changes in ECF acid-base variables. Furthermore, on return to normoxemia, ventilation rose considerably, still independent of changes in ECF PCO2, [H+], and [HCO3-].  相似文献

Freshwater (FW) spotted green pufferfish (Tetraodon nigroviridis) were transferred directly from a local aquarium to fresh water (FW; 0 per thousand ), brackish water (BW; 15 per thousand ), and seawater (SW; 35 per thousand ) conditions in the laboratory and reared for at least two weeks. No mortality was found. To investigate the efficient mechanisms of osmoregulation in the euryhaline teleost, distribution and expression of Na,K-ATPase (NKA) in gill and kidney of the pufferfish were examined and the osmolality, [Na+] and [Cl-] of the blood were assayed. The lowest levels of both relative protein abundance and activity were found to be exhibited in the BW group, and higher levels in the SW group than FW group. In all salinities, branchial NKA immunoreactivity was found in epithelial cells of the interlamellar region of the filament and not on the lamellae. Relative abundance of kidney NKA alpha-subunit, as well as the NKA activity, was found to be higher in the FW pufferfish than fish in BW or SW. Renal NKA appeared in the epithelial cells of distal tubules, proximal tubules, and collecting tubules, but not in glomeruli, in fish groups of various salinities. Plasma osmolality and chloride levels were significantly lower in FW pufferfish than those in BW and SW, whereas plasma sodium did not differ among the groups. Although identical distributions of NKA were found in either gill or kidney of FW-, BW- or SW-acclimated spotted green pufferfish, differential NKA expression in fish of various salinity groups was associated with physiological homeostasis (stable blood osmolality), and illustrated the impressive osmoregulatory ability of this freshwater and estuarine species in response to salinity challenge.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms in salivary [glucose], [Na+], [K+] and conductivity were measured in 2 age groups of men (men A, 20-45 years and men B, 46-60 years) and 8 different states of fertility in women (normally menstruating, taking oral contraceptives, pregnant, lactational amenorrhea, lactational amenorrhea and taking oral contraceptives, lactating and menstruating, menopausal, and post-menopausal). Unstimulated whole saliva (2-3 ml) was collected every 3 h over a 48 h span. Analysis of Spearman Rank Correlations indicated significant circadian rhythms (significant positive coefficients) for all groups of [Na+] (mean = 0.577 +/- 0.040) and conductivity (mean = 0.410 +/- 0.050). There was no evidence of differences in prominence of rhythm across groups for [Na+] and conductivity. [K+] showed less evidence of rhythms and much greater variability between groups (mean correlation coefficient = 0.198 +/- 0.055). Rhythms in [glucose] (mean correlation coefficient = 0.409 +/- 0.051) were evident in all groups except men B (0.016), menopausal women (0.151) and post-menopausal women (0.310). Model analysis of the data showed no discernible rhythmic trend with age for either conductivity, [Na+] or [K+], where any differences were explainable by the group characteristics. The rhythm in [glucose] showed a significant weakening with age over all groups (F-ratio = 7.46**), and was different between men A and men B (F-ratio = 6.95**). It was concluded that circadian rhythms were present in whole unstimulated saliva for conductivity and [Na+] and that these rhythms were independent of reproductive state, whereas circadian rhythms in [K+] were dependent on reproductive state. Circadian rhythms for [glucose] were dependent on age. The loss of a rhythm in [glucose] with age indicates that glucose, Na+ and K+ are not linked in their entry into saliva. The influence of entry and reabsorption on the final concentrations of glucose, Na+ and K+ in saliva is discussed.  相似文献

Red cell concentrations of hemoglobin (MCHC), H+, Na+, K+, Mg++, cl- were measured in femoral venous blood of six untrained (UT), six endurance trained (TR) and three semitrained (ST) subjects during graded increasing work (4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 mkp/s, 10-15 min on each step) on a bicycle ergometer. Before exercise no significant differences were detected for the measured variables when comparing UT and TR. During exercise MCHC, [Na+], [K+] and [Mg++] remained constant indicating lack of water shift into the erythrocytes in spite of a marked acidosis (lowest pH Blood value 7.225). This lack resulted from an elevated extracellular osmolality. [H+]Ery and [Cl-]Ery maximally increased by 2.0 X 10(-8) eq/kg H2O and 10 meq/l, respectively. The change was markedly greater in UT than in TR at equal load. However, if [H+] Ery and [Cl-] Ery were related to pH of whole blood, differences between groups, almost disappeared and the ions were distributed as predictable from in vitro experiments (Fitzsimmons and Sendroy, 1961). Behaviour of H+ and Cl- may be of importance for oxygen dissociation under in vivo conditions.  相似文献
