A randomized, blocked 23 factorial experiment was conducted with 48 pigs from sows fed a diet low in selenium and vitamin E. From 3 to 12 weeks of age the piglets were kept in single pens and fed a basic diet consisting mostly of barley, dried skim milk, soybean meal and dried yeast, and containing 55 µg selenium and 3 mg vitamin E per kg. The treatment factors — i.e. feed supplements — were 2 levels of Se (nil, 60 µg/kg), 2 levels of vitamin E (nil, 50 mg/kg), and 2 levels of the feed antioxidant ethoxyquin (nil, 150 mg/kg). Blood samples, collected at termination of the experiment, were examined for glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) and resistance against erythrocyte lipid peroxidation (ELP) to evaluate Se and vitamin E status, respectively. Analysis of variance showed the GSH-Px activity to be litter-dependent (P < 0.001) and influenced by selenium supplementation (P < 0.001) but not by the other supplements or by interactions between supplements. Resistance against ELP was influenced only by vitamin E supplementation (P < 0.001). GSH-Px and ELP thus seem to be valuable and simple methods for evaluating, respectively, Se status and vitamin E status in growing pigs.  相似文献

An experiment concerning 6 different vitamin E treatments was conducted with 30 young pigs. From 4 to 15 weeks of age the pigs were kept in individual pens and fed a selenium supplemented basal diet consisting mostly of propionic acid treated barley and soybean meal, and containing 4.4 mg vitamin E per kg. The treatments were periods with or without vitamin E supplement (20 mg/kg) or a vitamin E injection (200 mg). Blood samples collected during the period of investigation were examined for vitamin E and for resistance against erythrocyte lipid peroxidation (ELP) in order to evaluate the antioxidant status. Analysis of variance showed a litter effect on ELP values at all the weekly investigations and a treatment effect from two weeks after the experiment had started. Also the blood vitamin E level was litter dependent and influenced by treatment. Paired comparisons by Student’s t-test showed a delay of 1 to 2 weeks in the effect on ELP of a dietary vitamin E supplement. In contrast, both ELP and vitamin E changed very rapidly (hours) after vitamin E injections. Independently of the vitamin E treatments there was a rise in ELP within the first 2 or 3 weeks after weaning; this was taken as an index of a reduced antioxidant status during that period.  相似文献

A randomized, blocked 23 factorial experiment was conducted with 48 young pigs. The treatment factors were: 2 levels of selenium (55 and 115 µg/kg), 2 levels of vitamin E (3 and 53 mg/kg) and 2 levels of the antioxidant feed additive Ethoxyquin (0 and 150 mg/kg). All pigs were kept in single pens and fed ad libitum throughout the experimental period of 9 weeks, i.e. from 3 to 12 weeks of age. Plasma, heart, liver and muscle Se levels as well as whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity (EC 1.11.1.9 GSH-Px) were significantly higher in pigs given a dietary supplement of Se than in pigs given no supplement of Se (P ≤ 0.001). The Se-supplemented pigs showed a tendency to lower mean serum transaminase activity (ASAT and ALAT) than unsupplemented pigs, but the influence was significant (P ≤ 0.05) only for the ALAT activity. Blood vit. E levels were higher for pigs receiving a supplement of vit. E than for unsupplemented pigs (P ≤ 0.001), and so was the resistance of red blood cells against lipid peroxidation (ELP), as expressed by lower ELP values. There were no effects of Ethoxyquin supplementation on the biochemical variables included in the study. The histological examination of heart muscle showed that the score for changes was negatively influenced by both Se and vit. E supplement (P ≤ 0.001) and to some extent also by Ethoxyquin supplement (P ≤ 0.05). The histological picture of m. long dorsi was influenced only by the vit. E supplement (P ≤ 0.01). No histological changes were found in the liver in this study. There were inverse relationships between whole blood GSH-Px defluorescence time and blood Se, and between ELP and whole blood vit. E (P ≤ 0.001).  相似文献

Twenty Norwegian Landrace pigs were divided into 5 groups and fed a basal diet consisting of a mixture of dried skim milk and whey powder together with ground barley. The diet was supplemented with 0, 0.2, 0.8, 1.2 and 2.2 μg selenium as sodium selenite and was fed for 12 weeks. The muscle selenium level was increased by a factor of about 4 and the liver selenium by a factor of about 12 when the dietary selenium supplement was increased from zero to 2.2 μg/g. There was a significant linear correlation between dietary selenium and selenium concentrations in tissues. Possible benefit for humans consuming meat from animals having received the selenium doses used in this experiment are discussed. dietary selenium; tissue levels; pigs.  相似文献

The effect of selenium (Se) and vitamin E (Vit. E) on reproductive performance, growth and health was studied in pigs. Two levels of Se were used, 0.03 and 0.06 nag per kg feed. The major component of the experimental diets was barley originating from soil which had formerly produced crops with a very low content of Se. Prior to seeding, the area was divided into 2 plots, 1 of which was treated with Se in the form of sodium selenite, 100 g Se per ha. The use of Se enriched fertilizer was an effective way of increasing the Se concentration of the grain. Thus the concentration of Se in the barley produced on the treated area was 5 times higher than in barley from the untreated one. Vit. E was added at a level of 30 i.u. per kg feed, and the concentrations were approx. 15 and 45 i.u. in the basal and experimental diets, respectively. The higher level of Se or Vit. E was not significantly associated with milk yield of the sow, litter size, birth weight or haemoglobin levels. However, there was a tendency to an increase in milk yield of the sows following additions of Se plus Vit. E, and litter size was slightly higher from sows which had received an addition of Vit. E. The concentration of Se and Vit. E was much higher in colostrum than in sow milk, and additions of dietary Se and Vit. E were associated with marked increases in the concentrations of these compounds in both colostrum and sow milk. There was a moderately improving effect of a high Se concentration in feed on growth rate and feed utilization. Low dietary levels of Se and Vit. E were followed by increased mortality rate in piglets; iron toxicity in connection with iron treatment was observed in piglets on low dietary Vit. E. Symptoms characteristic of PSE were not observed in the Se and Vit. E deficient pigs.  相似文献

This study was performed to compare the bioavailability of two organic zinc compounds, a zinc glycinate complex and a zinc amino acid chelate with that of zinc sulphate in growing pigs fed a basal diet composed mainly of wheat, barley and soybean meal. The experiment included 96 pigs with an average body weight of 8 kg, allotted to ten groups of nine to ten pigs each. The first group received the basal diet, containing 42 mg of native zinc per kg, without zinc supplementation over a period of five weeks. The other nine groups received the basal diet supplemented with 15, 30 or 50 mg of zinc/kg as zinc sulphate, zinc glycinate or the zinc amino acid chelate. Pigs fed the unsupplemented diet had a lower growth performance (body weight gain, feed conversion ratio) than the other nine groups. Supplementation of 15 mg zinc/kg diet (irrespective of zinc form) was sufficient to yield optimum growth performance. Plasma zinc concentration and activity of alkaline phosphatase were rising with increasing zinc supplementation levels up to a maximum reached at a supplementary level of 30 or 50 mg/kg diet for activity of alkaline phosphatase and plasma zinc concentration, respectively. The response of those parameters to zinc supplementation did, however, not differ between the three zinc compounds considered. The apparent digestibility of zinc from the diet was also not different for the three zinc compounds. In conclusion, these findings show that the bioavailability of the two organic zinc compounds did not differ from that of zinc sulphate in growing pigs fed a diet with wheat, barley and soybean meal as major components.  相似文献

Milk substitutes for calves are based upon dried skim milk and added fats of vegetable or animal origin. Many attempts have been made to replace part of the skim milk in these feeds by cheaper sources of protein.A milk product coagulates in the calf's abomasum and has a high digestibility. Milk replacers based on fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) do not coagulate in the abomasum, but have a high apparent digestibility coefficient (0.92) and the amino acid balance is similar to that of skim milk.Calves were fed on milk replacers prepared from FPH made from various materials. In general, FPH prepared from white fish (cod, blue whiting, white fish offal) was satisfactory although calf performance until weaning was poorer than for calves fed on milk replacers with dried skim milk (SMP). Some ways are suggested by which the quality of the product (FPH) could be maintained. FPH preparations from fatty fish, like sprats and mackerel, were also used. An antioxidant was added in the preparation of sprats and mackerel because of the unsaturated nature of fish fats. Milk replacers containing sprats prepared without an antioxidant and mackerel (31% body fat) with antioxidant were unsatisfactory and further development work is required on FPH materials from fatty fish.FPH from white fish can be dried without any appreciable loss in calf performance. The daily gain to weaning was 0.25 and 0.29 kg per day for calves fed on the dried and undried material, respectively. On the basis of present knowledge it is suggested that FPH can replace one third of skim milk in milk replacers for early weaned calves; the proportion recommended may rapidly increase with further technical development of the product.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to contribute to the problem of overdosing vitamin E. A total of 80 laying hens, divided into 5 groups, were fed diets supplemented with 0; 100, 1000, 10 000 and 20 000 mg/kg vitamin E over a period of 20 weeks within two brooding tests. Laying performance and hatching parameters were registered. All vitamin E doses did not significantly influence health and performances of hens. Vitamin E content of eggs increased from 1 to 4, 21, 46 and 51 mg per egg with vitamin E supplementation. High doses decreased oxidative stability of abdominal fat, vitamin A concentration of liver and egg yolk colour. In both tests vitamin E supplements of 10 000 and 20 000 mg/kg feed resulted in a decrease of living hatched chicken, which demonstrated an adverse effect. Further studies seem to be necessary to explain the effect.  相似文献

The hypothesis that vitamin C interacts with vitamin E in vivo was investigated in juvenile lake sturgeon. Ten-month old lake sturgeon were fed diets supplemented with either 0 or 1250 mg ascorbic acid/kg diet concomitantly with either 0 or 200 mg α tocopherol/kg diet for 7 weeks at 17°C. Dietary vitamin C supplement resulted in significant increases of ascorbate concentrations in the posterior kidney and liver of sturgeon. Dietary vitamin E omission affected liver concentrations of α-tocopherol (10.0 ± 4.5 μg/g) in comparison to sturgeon fed a diet supplemented with vitamin E and vitamin C (99.5 ± 22.9 μg/g). Dietary vitamin C supplement decreased liver α-tocopherol concentration in vitamin E-deprived sturgeon. Also, vitamin E supplement lowered posterior kidney and liver ascorbic acid concentrations in vitamin C-deprived sturgeon. Gulonolactone oxidase and dehydroascorbic acid reductase activities were stimulated in groups fed vitamin C. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances concentrations (an indicator of lipid peroxidation) were higher in sturgeon fed either of vitamins as compared to sturgeon deprived of both vitamins. The results suggested that large doses of vitamins C and E may be prooxidant in vivo.  相似文献

We aimed to investigate the influence of dietary vitamin E and diludine on growth and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde; MDA) in rainbow trout. Fish (1.5 g) were fed different dietary levels of vitamin E (0, 50 and 100 mg/kg) and diludine (0, 0.5 and 1 g/kg) for 10 weeks. Growth performance and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly affected by dietary vitamin E (p < .05) but not diludine. Fish fed 50 mg/kg dietary vitamin E with no diludine had significantly better growth and lower FCR than those fed vitamin E free diets. Liver vitamin E content was significantly influenced by dietary vitamin E and diludine (p < .05). The highest hepatic vitamin E was in fish fed the highest dietary vitamin E and diludine levels. Hepatic MDA level was significantly affected by dietary vitamin E and diludine (p < .05), decreasing with the increase in both dietary vitamin E and diludine. According to our results, diludine had no significant effect on growth; however, decreased hepatic lipid peroxidation independent of vitamin E. Our results reveal that 50 mg/kg vitamin E content is suitable for optimal growth and FCR in rainbow trout juveniles. However, dose dependent effects of dietary diludine remain uncertain and need further researches.  相似文献

Supplementation of pregnant ewes with long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) demonstrably improves indicators of neonatal lamb vigour, potentially improving the number of lambs reared per ewe. The present study investigated the effect of supplementing ewes with fish oil and vitamin E (α-tocopherol acetate) throughout both pregnancy and lactation on the performance of lactating ewes and sucking lambs. Forty-eight ewes were supplemented with one of four concentrates containing either Megalac or fish oil plus a basal (50 mg/kg) or supranutritional (500 mg/kg) concentration of vitamin E from 6 weeks pre-partum until 4 weeks post partum in a two-by-two factorial randomised-block design. All concentrates were formulated to contain approximately 60 g/kg supplemental fatty acids. Ewes were housed, penned on sawdust and offered straw ad libitum. Blood samples were taken from ewes and lambs at intervals throughout the experiment and milk samples were obtained at 21 days into lactation. There was no notable effect of dietary vitamin E concentration upon ewe or lamb performance. Ewe dry-matter (DM) intake and yield were unaffected by dietary treatment, although ewes fed fish oil lost less weight during lactation (-1.88 kg compared with -3.97 kg for Megalac-supplemented ewes; P < 0.01). Milk fat concentrations (67.3 g/kg compared with 91.8 g/kg; P < 0.01) and yields (6.65 g/h v. 9.26 g/h; P < 0.01) were reduced in ewes fed fish oil and these decreases were associated with lower litter-growth rates (0.49 g/day compared with 0.54 g/day; P < 0.05). Milk protein yield was increased by fish oil supplementation (3.82 g/h) compared with Megalac supplementation (3.28 g/h; P < 0.05); moreover, there was an interaction between fat source and vitamin E concentration in that both protein concentration and yield were significantly lower in milk from ewes fed treatment with Megalac + basal vitamin E (MB) compared with the other three treatments. Fish oil supplementation increased the concentrations of C18:1 trans-, cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), C20:5 (n-3) and C22:6 (n-3) within ewe plasma, milk and lamb plasma. The mechanisms by which fish oil supplementation affects milk composition warrants further investigation.  相似文献

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus 2038 was examined for its activity to prevent the oxidation of the erythrocyte membrane in vitro, and the oxidation of LDL in vivo. Strain 2038 produced radical scavengers that reacted with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazl (DPPH) during cultivation. Moreover, the ethereal extract from the supernatant of the culture prevented the oxidation of the erythrocyte membrane in vitro. As an in vivo study, male F344 rats were fed on diets containing 20% fresh soybean oil (or 13% oxidized oil and 7% fresh oil) with 10% freeze-dried powder of the 2038 culture (or with skim milk powder) for 4 weeks. The level of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances was lower in the low-density lipoproteins (per milligram of cholesterol) from rats fed on the oxidized oil with freeze-dried powder of the 2038 culture than without it. The level of vitamin E in the plasma was higher in the rats fed on the oxidized oil with the freeze-dried powder than without it.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E contents on the growth, ascorbate induced iron-catalyzed lipid peroxidation in post-mortem muscle and liver tissue, and Raman spectral changes in lens of juvenile hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x O. aureus). Experimental fish were fed practical diets supplemented with 0, 50, 100, 200, 450 and 700 mg alpha-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet for 14 weeks. There was no significant difference in weight gain, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio among fish fed test diets (P>0.05). Protein content of fish fed diet containing the lowest vitamin E level was the lowest (P<0.05) among all groups. No difference was found in other body constituents among test fish (P>0.05). The thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances produced by iron-catalyzed lipid peroxidation in muscle and liver tissue of fish fed the diet without alpha-tocopheryl acetate supplementation were significantly (P<0.05) greater than those from fish fed diets containing higher levels of alpha-tocopheryl acetate. Dietary vitamin E supplementation increased the antioxidant capability of tilapia tissues against lipid peroxidation. Further, dietary vitamin E supplementation also influenced the lens cortical membrane structure of tilapia.  相似文献

The possibility was investigated that dietary supplementation of the male chicken with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the n-6 and n-3 series may prevent the decrease in sperm output that normally occurs by 60 weeks of age. From 26 weeks of age, birds were raised on wheat-based diets supplemented with either maize oil (rich in linoleic acid, 18:2n-6), arasco oil (rich in arachidonic acid, 20:4n-6) or tuna orbital oil (rich in docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6n-3). The effects of the last two oils were investigated at two levels of vitamin E supplementation (40 and 200 mg kg(-1) feed). By 60 weeks of age, there was a small increase in the proportion of the main polyunsaturate of chicken sperm phospholipid, docosatetraenoic acid 22:4n-6, in chickens fed arasco oil diet compared with chickens given the maize oil diet, an effect that was potentiated at the higher dietary intake of vitamin E. Supplementation with tuna orbital oil significantly reduced the proportions of 20:4n-6 and 22:4n-6 in the sperm phospholipid and increased the proportion of 22:6n-3. The diet supplemented with tuna orbital oil and the lower level of vitamin E markedly depleted vitamin E from the tissues of the birds and decreased the concentration of vitamin E in the semen; these effects were largely prevented by the higher level of vitamin E in the diet. The susceptibility of semen to lipid peroxidation in vitro was increased in chickens fed arasco and tuna orbital oils with 40 mg vitamin E kg(-1) feed, but was reduced when 200 mg vitamin E kg(-1) feed was provided in the diet. The number of spermatozoa per ejaculate decreased by 50% between 26 weeks and 60 weeks of age in the birds fed the maize oil diet. This age-related decrease in the number of spermatozoa was almost completely prevented by feeding the birds with the oils enriched in either 20:4n-6 or 22:6n-3. Testis mass at 60 weeks of age was approximately 1.5 times greater in birds given of the arasco and tuna orbital oil diets compared with those given the maize oil diet.  相似文献

Cows undergoing a negative energy balance (NEB) often experience a state of immunosuppression and are at greater risk of infectious diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of a folic acid and vitamin B12 supplement and feed restriction on several immune parameters. Sixteen cows at 45 ± 3 days in milk were assigned to 8 blocks of 2 cows each according to each cow’s milk production in the previous week, and within each block, the cows randomly received weekly intramuscular injections of either saline or 320 mg of folic acid and 10 mg of vitamin B12 for 5 weeks. During week 5, the cows were fed 75% of their ad libitum intake for 4 days. Blood samples were taken before the beginning of the experiment, just before feed restriction and after 3 days of feed restriction, in order to evaluate blood cell populations, the phagocytosis capacity and oxidative burst of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), the proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) and β-hydroxybutyrate. The vitamin supplement did not affect any of the tested variables except milk fat and lactose content. Feed restriction reduced milk production and increased the concentration of NEFAs. Feed restriction did not affect blood cell populations but did reduce the percentage of PMN positive for oxidative burst after stimulation with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate. The proliferation of PBMCs was reduced when the cell culture medium was supplemented with sera collected during the feed restriction. In conclusion, feed restriction affected the functions of PMN and PBMC and this effect was not prevented by the folic acid and vitamin B12 supplement. These results support the hypothesis that the greater risk of infectious diseases in cows experiencing a NEB is related to impaired immune cell functions by high circulating concentration of NEFAs.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that piglets weaned to a liquid milk replacer (MR), rather than a typical dry diet (DD) regimen, have improved growth rates and deposit more energy as body fat. In the present study, we used this model to determine whether changes in the expression of genes linked to the regulation of adiposity were related to the accelerated fat accretion. We also determined whether the increase in body fat was sustained throughout a substantial proportion of the growth curve. At weaning (19 plus minus 2 days of age), 96 piglets were placed in 12 replicate pens per diet (4 pigs per pen, 2 barrows and 2 gilts), and fed a liquid MR or conventional DD regimen for 5 weeks. Thereafter, 6 barrows and 6 gilts pigs from each diet were killed for determination of whole body chemical composition (less gastrointestinal contents). The remaining pigs were assigned randomly to weight target groups (60, 85, and 110 kg), placed in individual pens, and fed a conventional dietary regimen until killed at their respective weight targets for tissue sampling and determination of whole body chemical composition. Over the 5-week period in which the MR was fed, the growth rate of the pigs consuming the MR exceeded that of the pigs fed the DD by 36% (P <.05). Fat gain in these pigs was increased to 1.8 times that of the pigs fed the DD, and percentage body fat was 45% greater (P <.05). Acetyl Co-A carboxylase (ACC) activity (per mg of adipose extract protein) was not different between the two diet groups at the conclusion of the 5-week period, or at 110 kg body weight. During the MR period, actual protein gain was increased (P <.05) 22% in the pigs fed the MR as well. By 110 kg of body weight, body fat was reduced (P <.05) by 7.7% (total fat mass) and 8.3% (percentage of body weight basis) in the pigs fed MR vs. the DD group. The expression of the peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPAR) alpha and gamma was not influenced by diet or by body weight. Expression of the obese gene was independent of diet, but was greater (P <.09) in pigs at 110 kg body weight than at 60 kg. These data provide additional evidence that piglets weaned to liquid diets have greater rates of growth and deposit more body fat, but that this difference subsides quickly when a typical dry dietary regimen is imposed. Furthermore, the biochemical changes responsible for the increased adiposity are independent of changes in the expression of the obese or PPAR genes, at least at the mRNA level.  相似文献

Erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity and alkane production in exhaled air of growing rats were studied as a measure of lipid peroxidation in vivo. When 4-weeks-old, rats were fed a low-selenium (0.05 mg/kg) refined soy concentrate-based diet but adequate in vitamin E and other nutrients. Rats of control groups were fed the same diet supplemented with varying amounts of selenium as sodium selenite. After 10 weeks, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity in the group fed the low selenium diet had decreased to about 40% of the original level. Feeding this diet for a longer period resulted in a slow increase of the glutathione peroxidase level. After about 37 weeks, this level was equal to the initial level. During the same period of rapid growth, ethane and pentane production in the exhaled air of a group of similar animals on the diet containing 0.05 mg Se per kg was slightly although significantly higher compared with the levels of animals on a supplemented (0.4 mg Se per kg) diet. Differences were highest when glutathione peroxidase activity levels in the erythrocytes were lowest and negligible at the start of the experiment and after the period of rapid growth. These results support the view that the seleno-enzyme glutathione peroxidase is active in the defense mechanism of the cell against lipid proxidation.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted in order to examine the growth and voluntary feed consumption of young growing pigs fed on barley-based diets containing as the sole protein supplement lupin-seed meal (LSM) from either Lupinus angustifolius cv. Uniwhite (UW), Uniharvest (UH) or L. albus cv. Neuland (NL).Under the restricted feeding regimen of the first experiment pigs receiving diets containing either 31% or 43% of either UW or UH grew at similar rates and with similar efficiency of feed utilisation from 27.5 to 85 kg live weight. By contrast, all pigs fed on diets containing these same proportions of NL refused such large amounts of feed immediately after the diets were offered that their growth halted. In the second and third experiments the voluntary feed consumption of pigs weighing 18 to 34 kg and receiving diets containing 37 to 43% of any of three distinct lines of NL was significantly less than those of pigs receiving UW diets, to the extent in some cases that body-weight loss occurred. In the fourth experiment the growth and voluntary feed intakes of 20 to 30 kg pigs fed on a control diet containing a mixture of fishmeal and dried blood as the protein supplement were greater than those of pigs fed a UW diet, which in turn were greater than those of pigs receiving NL as the source of supplementary protein. Reduction of the alkaloid content of NL by ethanol extraction resulted in a recovery of growth and feed intake to levels similar to those supported by the UW diet.  相似文献

The present results would suggest that diets providing up to 14.6 mg kg−1 concentrate or 31 mg DON per 100 kg body weight for relatively high levels of milk production did not affect feed intake or milk production over a 3 week period. Caution is suggested as DON-contaminated barley can at times contain other mycotoxins.  相似文献
