The occurrence of Sarcocystis infection and pathological changes were recorded in samples of the heart, diaphragm, and oesophagus from 198 healthy sheep representing 3 different age groups, obtained from an abattoir. The infection rate of S. gigantea (syn. S. tenella) was 18.2 %, and the distribution within groups was: ewes 30.0 %, yearlings 11.6 %, lambs nil. The infection rate of S. tenella (syn. S. ovicanis) was 65.1 %, and the corresponding distribution was: ewes 83.5 %, yearlings 74.4 %, and lambs 25.0 %. A third type of Sarcocystis sp. displaying thick wall was found in 3 samples. Focal interstitial infiltrates of mononuclear cells were demonstrated in 47.9 % of the hearts, in 19.6 % of the diaphragms and in 31.3 % of the oesophagi. The occurrence of Sarcocystis and the focal interstitial mononuclear cell infiltrates were positively correlated (P < 0.0001). Morphologically identical sporocysts typical of S. tenella were produced by dogs and foxes fed naturally infected sheep tissues. A cat fed S. gigantea macrocysts produced sporocysts characteristic for the species. Sarcocystis; pathology; life cycle; final hosts; sheep.  相似文献

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis causes caseous lymphadenitis, a disease primarily affecting sheep and goats which occurs as a chronic infection characterized by suppurative lymphadenitis (Lovell 1959, Marsh 1965, Jubb & Kennedy 1970, Ayers 1977, Addo & Eid 1978). The disease has an insidious nature and a high prevalence, resulting in large economic losses due to condemnation of carcasses and organs at slaughter (Turner 1973).  相似文献

Two unknown radioactive areas appeared after radioautography and two dimensional paper chromatography of culture medium in which Escherichia coli was grown. These materials were studied by paper chromatography and paper electrophoresis of several derivatives and identified as ethionine and ethionine sulfone, the latter an artifact. Chromatographic coincidence of the unknowns and their derivatives with authentic materials establishes the identification. Ethionine was found in cellular extracts and in the growth media of Escherichia coli, Bacillus megaterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Aerobacter aerogenes but not in Scenedesmus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or bovine lymphosarcoma cells. Ethionine was synthesized by resting E. coli cultures from radioactive sulfate and from radioactive methionine. Growing cells labeled ethionine within 1 minute after addition of radioactive sulfate to cultures. Levels of radioactivity in ethionine increased with time. No incorporation of this amino acid could be detected in the cellular proteins formed under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

A highly specific medium was developed for the enumeration of lactate-utilizing bacteria in the rumen of sheep. This medium, which contained 2.0% lactate, 2.0% Trypticase, 0.2% yeast extract, and volatile fatty acids, hemin, and trace elements in place of rumen fluid, enabled high counts (42 × 107 to 190 × 107/g of ingesta) of lactate-utilizing bacteria to be made with a high degree of specificity (96%). The medium also supported the growth of all species of predominant lactate-utilizing bacteria reported to occur in the rumen and thus is of importance for ecological studies where the incidence and influence of the different species on lactate metabolism under changing conditions in the rumen cannot be predicted. The survival rate of isolates was increased from 60 to 96% by addition to the modified maintenance medium of 40% rumen fluid in place of the volatile fatty acids, hemin, and trace elements used in the counting medium. These results, together with the slow growth of colonies in roll bottles, showed that, although highly selective, the counting medium was not optimal for the types selected.  相似文献

Four strains of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens, transformed with a gene encoding fluoroacetate dehalogenase, maintained a combined population of 106 to 107 cells ml−1 in the rumens of test sheep. Five inoculated sheep showed markedly reduced toxicological symptoms after fluoroacetate poisoning when behavioral, physiological, and histological effects were compared with those of five uninoculated control sheep.  相似文献

To obtain insight into the occurrence and prevalence of Clostridium perfringens and its major toxins in polar bears (Ursus maritimus), we took fecal samples for bacteriologic analysis from live-captured bears in the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway, in 2001. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from 40 of 92 samples (44%). Thirty strains were further characterized by determining toxin type and were classified to be type A, while one was also positive for the gene encoding beta2-toxin. Despite the fact that C. perfringens type A has been associated with fatal diseases in several animal species as well as in humans, our data indicate that C. perfringens type A is an normal inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract of polar bears.  相似文献

We report the diversity and distribution of Francisella species in Norwegian coastal and fresh waters following a nationwide survey in which water and sediment samples were collected from locations spanning almost the entire Norwegian coastline. In total, samples were obtained from 149 and 64 seawater and freshwater sites, respectively. DNA extracts from these environmental samples were initially screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using Francisella genus-specific 16S rDNA primers. Positive samples were then amplified with genus-specific primers targeting Francisella succinate dehydrogenase A gene and Francisella philomiragia group-specific sequences for the SAICAR synthetase/phosphoribosylamine-glycine ligase gene. Francisella-related bacteria were identified in approximately 30% of seawater sampled sites, mainly in southern Norway, although a single positive sample was identified in the far north of the country. No PCR positives were identified from the freshwater sources. Sequences related to recognised species, both pathogenic and environmental, were identified, with the majority closely associated with F. philomiragia. However, a number of identified sequences probably represent previously undescribed species. Our data provide evidence of a significant background of Francisella spp. in geographical areas associated with outbreaks of fish francisellosis in Norway.  相似文献

Serum samples of 749 sheep from 75 sheep flocks in Norway, i.e. 361 lambs (6 to 7 months old) and 388 adults (>1.5 year), were analysed for antibodies to Ehrlichia equi. Ten animals from each flock were examined. Seropositive animals were found along the coast of southern Norway from Vestfold to S?r-Tr?ndelag (as far north as 63°38'N). Seropositive sheep were not found in southeast, east or northern Norway. Thirty-two flocks were seropositive, although tick-borne fever had only been diagnosed earlier in half of these. In 78% of the seropositive flocks, more than 80% of the sheep were seropositive. A total of 35.7 % and 36.3 % of lambs and adults were found seropositive, respectively. However, the overall seroprevalence among animals that had been grazing on Ixodes pastures were 0.80 for the lambs and 0.84 for the adults. Mean antibody titres (± SD) (log10) in seropositive lambs and adults were 2.59 (± 0.449) and 2.70 (± 0.481), respectively. No significant differences in either seroprevalence or mean antibody titre between sheep of different ages were obtained in this study. Based on antibodies 94% of sheep flocks on Ixodes pastures were infected with a granulocytic Ehrlichia infection. The association between seropositive flocks and Ixodes infested pasture shows a very high degree of agreement (p < 0.00001). The present study indicates that granulocytic Ehrlichia infection in sheep is underdiagnosed in Norway.  相似文献

通过DNS法测定羊瘤胃源功能性细菌产生的纤维素酶和淀粉酶的活力,福林酚法测定产生的蛋白酶的活力,检测细菌产生酶的特性。同时检测菌株的发酵液对大肠埃希菌(ATCC25922)、副溶血弧菌(ATCC17802)、藤黄八叠球菌(HY78)和产气杆菌(AS1489)等指示菌的抑制能力,分析它们的抑菌活性。结果表明,羊瘤胃源细菌C13产生的纤维素酶活力最高,产酶量也最高;而细菌C5产淀粉酶活力和蛋白酶活力最高,产生淀粉酶和蛋白酶的能力也最高。抑菌活性检测发现,细菌C9对副溶血弧菌(ATCC17802)有很高的抑制作用,而细菌C12对大肠埃希菌(ATCC25922)的抑制能力最明显。  相似文献

Viable prokaryotes have been detected in basal sediments beneath the few Northern Hemisphere glaciers that have been sampled for microbial communities. However, parallel studies have not previously been conducted in the Southern Hemisphere, and subglacial environments in general are a new and underexplored niche for microbes. Unfrozen subglacial sediments and overlying glacier ice samples collected aseptically from the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier in the Southern Alps of New Zealand now have been shown to harbor viable microbial populations. Total direct counts of 2–7 × 106 cells g–1 dry weight sediment were observed, whereas culturable aerobic heterotrophs ranged from 6–9 × 105 colony-forming units g–1 dry weight. Viable counts in the glacier ice typically were 3–4 orders of magnitude smaller than in sediment. Nitrate-reducing and ferric iron–reducing bacteria were detected in sediment samples from both glaciers, but were few or below detection limits in the ice samples. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria were detected only in the Fox Glacier sediment. Restriction fragment analysis of 16S rDNA amplified from 37 pure cultures of aerobic heterotrophs capable of growth at 4°C yielded 23 distinct groups, of which 11 were identified as -Proteobacteria. 16S rDNA sequences from representatives of these 11 groups were analyzed phylogenetically and shown to cluster with bacteria such as Polaromonas vacuolata and Rhodoferax antarcticus, or with clones obtained from permanently cold environments. Chemical analysis of sediment and ice samples revealed a dilute environment for microbial life. Nevertheless, both the sediment samples and one ice sample demonstrated substantial aerobic mineralization of 14C-acetate at 8°C, indicating that sufficient nutrients and viable psychrotolerant microbes were present to support metabolism. Unfrozen subglacial sediments may represent a significant global reservoir of biological activity with the potential to influence glacier meltwater chemistry.  相似文献

The distribution of eleven dictyostelid cellular slime molds found in Norway was studied. They were divided into four groups according to their dominance. In decreasing order the groups were: (1) two varieties of Dictyostelium mucoroides , (2) D. aureostipes and Polysphondylium violaceum , (3) D. fasciculatum, D. minutum, P. pallidum and Dictyostelium sp. 1, and (4) Dictyostelium sp. 2 and 3 and Acytostelium lep–tosomum. Differences in distribution related to altitudes and latitudes, climates and dominant tree species were observed for some species.  相似文献

The study provides data on the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods from supermarkets in Southern Italy. The pathogen was detected in 105/1045 (10%) RTE food samples. In particular, it was highlighted in 4/392 (1%) pastries, 23/112 (20.5%) vacuum-packaged sliced salami samples, 2/108 (1.9%) cream cheese samples, 31/115 (27%) mayonnaise based deli salads and 45/132 (34.1%) smoked salmon samples. The mozzarella samples were L. monocytogenes negative. Given the considerable public health implications, the study confirms that surveillance of listeriosis in Europe should be improved and coordinated between European Union Member States in order to better estimate the burden of disease and to prevent foodborne outbreaks, assessing the human health risk arising from RTE foods.  相似文献

Samples of sewage influent from 40 sewage treatment works (STW) throughout Norway were examined for Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia duodenalis cysts. Both parasites were detected frequently (80% of STW were Cryptosporidium positive; 93% of STW were Giardia positive) and at maximum concentrations of > 20,000 parasites/liter. The data suggest giardiasis is more widespread, and/or occurs with greater infection intensity, than cryptosporidiosis in Norway. STW serving higher person equivalents were more likely to be positive and had higher parasite concentrations. Parasite concentrations were used to estimate the proportion of contributing populations that could be clinically infected. For Cryptosporidium, the highest estimates were up to 5 per 100,000 individuals for two populations in eastern Norway. For Giardia, the highest estimate was 40 infected per 100,000 persons (approximately five times the usual national annual average) contributing to an STW in western Norway. As this population experienced a large waterborne giardiasis outbreak 6 months after sampling, it can be speculated that regular challenge with Giardia may occur here. Most Giardia isolates in sewage influent were assemblage A, although some assemblage B isolates were detected. There was substantial heterogeneity, but most samples contained isolates similar to genotype A3. Removal efficiencies at two STW with secondary treatment processes were estimated to be approximately 50% for Cryptosporidium and > 80% for Giardia. An STW with minimal treatment had negligible removal of both parasites. Many STW in Norway have minimal treatment and discharge effluent into rivers and lakes, thus, risk of contamination of water courses by Cryptosporidium and Giardia is considerable.  相似文献
