The issue of whether contrast adaptation can reduce the perceived contrast of gratings oriented orthogonal to the adapting stimulus to a greater extent than parallel gratings has been the subject of considerable debate (Snowden and Hammett, 1992; Ross and Speed, 1996). We compared the reductions in perceived contrast of various test gratings oriented parallel and orthogonal to the adapting stimulus across a range of spatial frequencies (2.25-9 c/deg) and adaptation contrasts (0.19-1.0). Our results show that when the adapting stimulus is low in contrast, parallel adaptation effects are always greater than the effects of orthogonal adaptation. When the adapting contrast is increased, however, the difference between parallel and orthogonal effects is reduced. Further increases in adapting contrast can produce a situation where cross-orientation adaptation effects exceed iso-orientation effects. This was observed at low spatial frequencies (2.25 and 4.5 c/deg) only. The difference in the pattern of results obtained at low and high spatial frequencies can be explained in terms of the adapting stimulus visibility. We conclude that cross-orientation adaptation effects can be greater than iso-orientation effects, but only when the adapting stimulus is highly suprathreshold.  相似文献

The pressor reflex evoked by muscular contraction (exercise pressor reflex) is held to be an important mechanism in producing the cardiovascular adjustments to static exercise. Recent experiments using lesioning and metabolic labeling methods have indicated that the caudal ventrolateral medulla may be a key integrative site for the reflex evoked by muscular contraction induced by ventral root stimulation. Therefore, we sought to determine whether cells in this region could be associated with the cardiovascular reflex accompanying muscular contraction through analysis of their discharge characteristics. Eighty cells were characterized as to their response to ventral root stimulus-induced static muscular contraction, intra-arterial capsaicin (selective groups III and IV stimulus), and mechanical probing. The cells' receptive fields were also determined by mechanical probing. The receptive fields were usually large, often including all four limbs and the trunk. Four response patterns were observed to static contractions: a brisk initial discharge followed by a gradual return toward control levels (slowly adapting), a brief onset and cessation response, a brief inhibition followed by a slowly adapting discharge, and inhibition alone. Virtually all cells tested were responsive to capsaicin. Histological analysis verified the position of the recorded cells. It is suggested that the cells most likely to participate in the pressor response to muscular contraction were those cells in the general region of the lateral reticular nucleus which responded with an initial and sustained discharge and the cells that were inhibited in the region of the nucleus ambiguus (possible inhibition of vagal outflow).  相似文献

The integration of local image features into global shapes was investigated in monkeys and humans using fMRI. An adaptation paradigm was used, in which stimulus selectivity was deduced by changes in the course of adaptation of a pattern of randomly oriented elements. Accordingly, we observed stronger activity when orientation changes in the adapting stimulus resulted in a collinear contour than a different random pattern. This selectivity to collinear contours was observed not only in higher visual areas that are implicated in shape processing, but also in early visual areas where selectivity depended on the receptive field size. These findings suggest that unified shape perception in both monkeys and humans involves multiple visual areas that may integrate local elements to global shapes at different spatial scales.  相似文献

Light-induced changes of sensitivity in Limulus ventral photoreceptors   总被引:23,自引:22,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
The responses of Limulus ventral photoreceptors to brief test flashes and to longer adapting lights were measured under voltage clamp conditions. When the cell was dark adapted, there was a range of energy of the test flashes over which the peak amplitude of the responses (light-induced currents) was directly proportional to the flash energy. This was also true when test flashes were superposed on adapting stimuli but the proportionality constant (termed peak currently/photon) was reduced. The peak current/photon was attenuated more by brighter adapting stimuli than by less bright adapting stimuli. The peak current/photon is a measure of the sensitivity of the conductance-increase mechanism underlying the light response of the photo-receptor. The response elicited by an adapting stimulus had a large initial transient which declined to a smaller plateau. The peak current/photon decreased sharply during the declining phase of the transient and was relatively stable during the plateau. This indicates that the onset of light adaptation is delayed with respect to the onset of the response to the adapting stimulus. If the adaptational state just before the onset of each of a series of adapting stimuli was constant, the amplitude of the transient was a nearly linear function of intensity. When the total intensity was rapidly doubled (or halved) during a plateau response, the total current approximately doubled (or halved). We argue that the transition from transient to plateau, light-elicited changes of threshold, and the nonlinear function relating the plateau response to stimulus intensity all reflect changes of the responsiveness of the conductance-increase mechanism.  相似文献

The motion after-effect (MAE) persists in crowding conditions, i.e., when the adaptation direction cannot be reliably perceived. The MAE originating from complex moving patterns spreads into non-adapted sectors of a multi-sector adapting display (i.e., phantom MAE). In the present study we used global rotating patterns to measure the strength of the conventional and phantom MAEs in crowded and non-crowded conditions, and when attention was directed to the adapting stimulus and when it was diverted away from the adapting stimulus. The results show that: (i) the phantom MAE is weaker than the conventional MAE, for both non-crowded and crowded conditions, and when attention was focused on the adapting stimulus and when it was diverted from it, (ii) conventional and phantom MAEs in the crowded condition are weaker than in the non-crowded condition. Analysis conducted to assess the effect of crowding on high-level of motion adaptation suggests that crowding is likely to affect the awareness of the adapting stimulus rather than degrading its sensory representation, (iii) for high-level of motion processing the attentional manipulation does not affect the strength of either conventional or phantom MAEs, neither in the non-crowded nor in the crowded conditions. These results suggest that high-level MAEs do not depend on attention and that at high-level of motion adaptation the effects of crowding are not modulated by attention.  相似文献

In a series of experiments designed to explore the processes underlying adaptation of the sense of flutter-vibration, vibrotactile threshold was measured on the pad of the index finger, using Békésy tracking. Unadapted thresholds were first measured, for a number of frequencies (4-90 Hz) and contactor sizes (1-8 mm diameter). As expected, these measurements indicated the presence of (1) a Pacinian system possessing spatial summation and increasing in sensitivity, as frequency was raised, at the rate of 12 dB/octave; and (2) a non-Pacinian system showing little spatial summation, and with a frequency characteristic matching that of the NP I mechanism of Bolanowski et al. (1988). These baseline data of Experiment 1 guided the selection of stimulus parameters for subsequent experiments, in which threshold for a test stimulus was measured before, during, and after periods of vibrotactile adaptation.

In Experiment 2, test stimuli of 10 Hz and 50 Hz were combined factorially with 30-dB SL adapting stimuli of the same two frequencies. When the test stimulus was 10 Hz, the two adapting frequencies were equally effective in raising threshold; however, when the 50-Hz test stimulus was used, the 50-Hz adapting stimulus raised threshold by a greater amount than did the 10-Hz adapter. These results confirm on the finger the independence of adaptation in Pacinian and non-Pacinian channels, a result previously established on the thenar by other workers. For all four frequency combinations, threshold rose exponentially with a time constant of 1.5-2 min.

In Experiment 3, an action spectrum was determined, showing the adapting amplitude needed at each of a series of frequencies to raise the threshold of a 10-Hz stimulus by 10 dB; this spectrum was essentially flat from 30 to 90 Hz. The results, taken in conjunction with what is known about rapidly adapting cutaneous mechanoreceptors, imply that the effectiveness of an adapting stimulus is not determined solely by the amount of activity it generates in first-order afferents.  相似文献

The accord between symmetries of flower shape (external contours) and nectar guides (internal contours) was examined using the bulbous flora of South Africa, and in the general floras of Britain, Alpine Colorado, Canadian Arctic and Israel. It was found that radially symmetrical flowers have radially symmetrical nectar guides whereas bilaterally symmetrical flowers have bilaterally symmetrical nectar guides. It is suggested that the complementarity between the external and the internal contours of the flower increases the probability that, and efficiency with which, a bee moves into the flower's centre and towards the sporophylls and access to floral rewards, regardless of the flower's form and the bee's previous experience. Patterns of coloration of tepals against background and nectar guides against tepals also accord with behavioural and sensory characteristics of pollinators. It is suggested that the complementarity of contours is probably constrained by floral development, but patterns of coloration of tepals against background and nectar guides against tepals is constrained by pollinators' sensory physiology.  相似文献

An illusory contour is an image that is perceived as a contour in the absence of typical contour characteristics, such as a change in luminance or chromaticity across the stimulus. In cats and primates, cells that respond to illusory contours are sparse in cortical area V1, but are found in greater numbers in cortical area V2. We propose a model capable of illusory contour detection that is based on a realistic topographic organization of V1 cells, which reproduces the responses of individual cell types measured experimentally. The model allows us to explain several experimentally observed properties of V2 cells including variability in orientation tuning and inducer spacing preference. As a practical application, the model can be used to estimate the relationship between the severity of a cortical injury in the primary visual cortex and the deterioration of V2 cell responses to real and illusory contours.  相似文献

The perception of blur in images can be strongly affected by prior adaptation to blurry images or by spatial induction from blurred surrounds. These contextual effects may play a role in calibrating visual responses for the spatial structure of luminance variations in images. We asked whether similar adjustments might also calibrate the visual system for spatial variations in color. Observers adjusted the amplitude spectra of luminance or chromatic images until they appeared correctly focused, and repeated these measurements either before or after adaptation to blurred or sharpened images or in the presence of blurred or sharpened surrounds. Prior adaptation induced large and distinct changes in perceived focus for both luminance and chromatic patterns, suggesting that luminance and chromatic mechanisms are both able to adjust to changes in the level of blur. However, judgments of focus were more variable for color, and unlike luminance there was little effect of surrounding spatial context on perceived blur. In additional measurements we explored the effects of adaptation on threshold contrast sensitivity for luminance and color. Adaptation to filtered noise with a 1/f spectrum characteristic of natural images strongly and selectively elevated thresholds at low spatial frequencies for both luminance and color, thus transforming the chromatic contrast sensitivity function from lowpass to nearly bandpass. These threshold changes were found to reflect interactions between different spatial scales that bias sensitivity against the lowest spatial grain in the image, and may reflect adaptation to different stimulus attributes than the attributes underlying judgments of image focus. Our results suggest that spatial sensitivity for variations in color can be strongly shaped by adaptation to the spatial structure of the stimulus, but point to dissociations in these visual adjustments both between luminance and color and different measures of spatial sensitivity.  相似文献

After an observer adapts to a moving stimulus, texture within a stationary stimulus is perceived to drift in the opposite direction-the traditional motion aftereffect (MAE). It has recently been shown that the perceived position of objects can be markedly influenced by motion adaptation. In the present study, we examine the selectivity of positional shifts resulting from motion adaptation to stimulus attributes such as velocity, relative contrast, and relative spatial frequency. In addition, we ask whether spatial position can be modified in the absence of perceived motion. Results show that when adapting and test stimuli have collinear carrier gratings, the global position of the object shows a substantial shift in the direction of the illusory motion. When the carrier gratings of the adapting and test stimuli are orthogonal (a configuration in which no MAE is experienced), a global positional shift of similar magnitude is found. The illusory positional shift was found to be immune to changes in spatial frequency and to contrast between adapting and test stimuli-manipulations that dramatically reduce the magnitude of the traditional MAE. The lack of sensitivity for stimulus characteristics other than direction of motion suggests that a specialized population of cortical neurones, which are insensitive to changes in a number of rudimentary visual attributes, may modulate positional representation in lower cortical areas.  相似文献

Expiratory effects of electrical stimulation of vagal afferents were studied in 12 kittens during the first week of life. Animals anesthetized with ketamine (30 mg/kg, im) and acepromazine (1.1 mg/kg, im), tracheostomized, and paralyzed were artificially ventilated after bilateral vagotomy. Rectified and "integrated" activity of the C5 root of phrenic nerve, systemic blood pressure, and the stimulus train were recorded. The optimal stimulus parameters for expiratory prolongation were chosen. The results varied between animals. We found three types of response: A, expiratory prolongation when stimulus was applied within the initial 80% of control expiratory time (TEc); beyond this delay, a decreased response or no effect was observed in four kittens; B, graded expiratory prolongation was recorded to the end of this phase in three kittens; and C, expiratory prolongation when stimulus delay was less than 40% of TEc and expiratory shortening when the stimulus given with greater delays was observed in one kitten. Nonsignificant effects were observed in the remaining four animals. Types A and B of response suggest activation of the slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptors. However, amplitude of stimulus and frequency of pulses were higher than those used in adult animals. Type C response indicates that fibers from both rapidly and slowly adapting stretch receptors could be activated. Our results imply that if the expiratory insensitive phase is present in kittens, it can be affected by experimental conditions. This is in contradiction to characteristics of expiratory response to vagal stretch receptor input in adult cats.  相似文献

Symmetry has a central role in visual art, it is often linked to beauty, and observers can detect it efficiently in the lab. We studied what kind of fast and automatic responses are generated by visual presentation of symmetrical patterns. Specifically, we tested whether a brief presentation of novel symmetrical patterns engenders positive affect using a priming paradigm. The abstract patterns were used as primes in a pattern-word interference task. To ensure that familiarity was not a factor, no pattern and no word was ever repeated within each experiment. The task was to classify words that were selected to have either positive or negative valence. We tested irregular patterns, patterns containing vertical and horizontal reflectional symmetry, and patterns containing a 90 deg rotation. In a series of 7 experiments we found that the effect of affective congruence was present for both types of regularity but only when observers had to classify the regularity of the pattern after responding to the word. The findings show that processing abstract symmetrical shapes or random pattern can engender positive or negative affect as long as the regularity of the pattern is a feature that observers have to attend to and classify.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine why face identity aftereffects are diminished in children with autism, relative to typical children. To address the possibility that reduced face aftereffects might reflect reduced attention to adapting stimuli, we investigated the consequence of controlling attention to adapting faces during a face identity aftereffect task in children with autism and typical children. We also included a size-change between adaptation and test stimuli to determine whether the reduced aftereffects reflect atypical adaptation to low- or higher-level stimulus properties. Results indicated that when attention was controlled and directed towards adapting stimuli, face identity aftereffects in children with autism were significantly reduced relative to typical children. This finding challenges the notion that atypicalities in the quality and/or quantity of children’s attention during adaptation might account for group differences previously observed in this paradigm. Additionally, evidence of diminished face identity aftereffects despite a stimulus size change supports an adaptive processing atypicality in autism that extends beyond low-level, retinotopically coded stimulus properties. These findings support the notion that diminished face aftereffects in autism reflect atypicalities in adaptive norm-based coding, which could also contribute to face processing difficulties in this group.  相似文献

Summary Locusta migratoria were tethered on a yaw-torque balance and flown in a wind tunnel of diamond-shaped cross-section. Slowly moving stripes of very low luminance were projected onto the two lower faces of the tunnel and a turning stimulus was generated by reversing the direction of stripe movement on one face relative to the other. It was found that the lower the pattern speed, the higher the luminance required to maintain a torque response. When our results were plotted together with optomotor thresholds taken or inferred from the data of other workers, a threshold curve extending over a luminance range from 10–8 to 1 Lamberts (1 Lambert (L) = 3183 cd/m2), and a pattern speed range from 10–2 to 1 °/s2 °/s could be constructed. An implication of this threshold curve is thatLocusta flying in bright moonlight and as high as 2000 m could, in principle, detect the drift induced by a cross-wind of only 2.5 m/s. However, in the absence of the moon, this sensitivity to drift would be much reduced and it seems to be inadequate to explain some cases of down-wind orientation that have been observed by radar on moonless nights.  相似文献

Summary The activity in sensory and motor nerves of the gills was recorded from selected branches of the vagus nerve in decerebrate dogfish,Scyliorhinus canicula. Vagal motoneuronal activity was observed at the start of the rapid pharyngeal contraction and was followed by sensory nerve activity which preceded the slow expansion phase. Rhythmical vagal motoneuronal activity was still present after all movements had been prevented by curare paralysis although the frequency of the rhythm was higher than in the ventilating fish. Electrical stimulation of vagal sensory fibres had 3 effects on the ventilatory movements. (1) It evoked a reflex contraction of several gill muscles after a latency of about 11 ms. (2) It could reset the respiratory cycle because a stimulus given during expansion delayed the onset of the subsequent contraction. (3) The stimulus could entrain the rhythm if it was given continuously at a frequency close to that of ventilation. The vagal motor rhythm was disrupted by trigeminal nerve stimulation in the paralyzed fish but not if the motor rhythm was being entrained by vagal nerve stimulation. Vagal sensory activity may be important, therefore, in maintaining the stability of the generating circuits.Abbreviation LED Light emitting diode  相似文献

Box jellyfish respond to visual stimuli by changing the dynamics and frequency of bell contractions. In this study, we determined how the contrast and the dimming time of a simple visual stimulus affected bell contraction dynamics in the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora. Animals were tethered in an experimental chamber where the vertical walls formed the light stimuli. Two neighbouring walls were darkened and the contraction of the bell was monitored by high-speed video. We found that (1) bell contraction frequency increased with increasing contrast and decreasing dimming time. Furthermore, (2) when increasing the contrast and decreasing the dimming time pulses with an off-centred opening had a better defined direction and (3) the number of centred pulses decreased. Only weak effects were found on the relative diameter of the contracted bell and no correlation was found for the duration of bell contraction. Our observations show that visual stimuli modulate swim speed in T. cystophora by changing the swim pulse frequency. Furthermore, the direction of swimming is better defined when the animal perceives a high-contrast, or fast dimming, stimulus.  相似文献

In work electric activity of frog's retina was investigated by silent substitution technique. Electroretinogram was recorded as a response to abrupt exchange of the referent stimulus-line with fixed values of luminance and orientation to test lines with varied luminance and orientations. As a result of the analysis it has been allocated two types of responses of a retina. The response to onset-offset of a stimulus-line was similar to the response at homogeneous illumination of a retina (ERG), and was characterized by both the high amplitude of b-wave (hundreds mkV) and significant asymmetry of b- and d-waves. Whereas the same waves in response to substitution of the same stimuli were more symmetric and had on ten times smaller amplitudes. Such activity of frog's retina was referred as pattern electroretinogram (PERG) recorded in a high vertebrate's retina as response to stimuli whose contrast was temporally modulated. The analysis of interaction of luminance and line orientation channels in retina was carried out on the base of construction V-shaped functions of stimuli differentiation. It has shown, that activities of both channels are linearly summarized in PERG. It means independent and parallel functioning of these mechanisms. However, it takes the short subdivision of luminance, namely, when luminance of test line not far from luminance of referent line. At the same time, from the moment of the double prevalence of test line in relation to referent line, growth of PERG amplitude has nonlinearly form. Such two-stage changing of PERG amplitude speaks presence in a retina of a frog of two mechanisms of coding of luminance. One mechanism coding light intensity by power of the discharge, it forms the information on an absolute level of light in the environment. Its activity is caused basically, by receptors and cells of external plexiform layer and is submitted by b-wave of electroretinogram. Other mechanism submitted in PERG, is based on the vector code of stimulus, it forms the information on spatial and time differentiation of a light in the visual field and is connected, basically, with cells of internal plexiform layer of frog's retina.  相似文献

The frog retina was stimulated with light flashes homogeneous in space but not time. The time heterogeneity of stimulation was created by abrupt change of a referent stimulus for a stimulus with different luminance. Such changes form a time pattern, as well as sharp borders of luminance between the neighbor areas of the visual field form a spatial pattern. The electroretinogram recorded in response to presentation of a triad of stimuli: the onset of a short flash of homogeneous light after long dark (or light) adaptation of a retina, brief sequence of the referent and test light flashes varied in luminance, and the offset, with returning to the initial level of adaptation. It was shown that responses of the retina under conditions of time heterogeneity of stimulation could be divided in two types as well as under conditions of spatial heterogeneity. Such a dual change in amplitude confirms our earlier hypothesis on the existence of two mechanisms of luminance coding in the frog retina. The first mechanism encodes power characteristics of light, it forms the information on the absolute level of the environmental luminance. Its activity is connected basically with receptors and cells of the external plexiform layer of the frog's retina. It is responsible for the b-wave of the electroretinogram. The other mechanism associated with RERG is based on a vector code of stimuli. This mechanism forms the information on spatial and time differentiation of the light flow in the visual field and is connected basically with cells of the internal plexiform layer. The results suggest that the frog retina has the individual mechanism for time pattern detection, distinguishing it from the homogeneous light flow in a similar way as in case of spatial light pattern detection. It is possible that the first mechanism is responsible for the detection of any new stimulus in general, irrespective of its specificity, whereas the second mechanism serves for the measurement of suprathreshold differences between stimuli.  相似文献
