Dystocia (difficult labor) is an important component of the management of nonhuman primates and results in significant fetal and maternal morbidity and increased use of veterinary resources. Dystocias can arise from abnormalities of the maternal pelvis or fetus or uncoordinated uterine activity. Although risk factors for stillbirths have been established in nonhuman primates, risk factors for dystocias have not. The objective of this study was to determine maternal and fetal risk factors for dystocia in macaques. Retrospective data were collected from 83 pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) diagnosed with dystocia. The diagnosis of dystocia was made based on clinical or pathologic evidence. Maternal records of age, reproductive history, experimental history, clinical records, and fetal birth weight and any applicable fetal necropsy reports were reviewed. The gestational age of the fetus, the infant's birth weight, total previous births by the dam, and the proportions of both viable delivery (inverse effect) and surgical pregnancy interventions (direct effect) in the dam's history generated a model that maximized the experimental variance for predicting dystocia in the current pregnancy and explained 24% of the dystocia deliveries. The number of total previous births and proportion of previous cesarean sections accounted for the greatest effect. This model can identify individual dams within a colony that are at risk for dystocias and allow for changes in breeding colony management, more intense monitoring of dams at risk, or allocation of additional resources.  相似文献

Given the societal emphasis placed on the deliberate breeding of purebred animals, the practitioner today is faced with issues relative to successful parturition in these animals. Today, the serious hobby breeder expects to use planned breeding management to result in a high conception and pregnancy rate and survival rates of offspring that may exceed published parameters. These clients may elect to schedule cesarean section to maximize puppy survival and assure that they have access to quality veterinary care. Using a combination of hormone assays, temperature changes in the dam and carefully timed and documented breeding management, a cesarean section can be planned. Emergency cesarean sections will still be required for the bitch that experiences dystocia or a medical condition that warrants intervention. Timed cesarean section results in a favorable medical outcome for the dam and litter and a better financial outcome for the owner.  相似文献

When dystocia is diagnosed in the bitch or queen, two forms of treatment exist: medical or surgical therapy. Medical management of dystocia has the advantage of aiding completion of the parturition process without surgery or anesthesia. However, since not all cases of dystocia can be managed medically, educated and careful decision making is required prior to instituting medical management in cases of dystocia. Improper medical treatment, especially when surgical management is clinically indicated, can result in compromise and even death of the dam and fetuses. This paper focuses on the decision making necessary prior to instituting medical management for cases of dystocia in both bitches and queens, and describes available therapeutics.  相似文献

The relationship of heifer size, calf size and sire on dystocia was studied in approximately one thousand Angus, Hereford X Angus and Charolais heifers bred to Angus, Hereford and Charolais bulls. Heifers were weighed and pelvic measurements taken 35 days post breeding, at midgestation, and on a random group of 135 heifers two weeks prior to calving. Dystocia score, calf birth weight, calf body length, calf hip width and calf sex were recorded at calving.Correlation coefficients for calf traits indicate that birth weight and birth weight to body measurement ratios were the most highly correlated variables with dystocia score. For traits of the dam, pelvic area was the most highly correlated variable to dystocia score, while dam weight had a low and nonsignificant correlation.Sires experiencing a higher than average incidence of dystocia had calves that were larger for all measures of body size. Individual sire differences for dystocia indicate a large number of calves and an accurate randomization of heifers bred to each bull is necessary to make precise judgements as to a bull's potential for siring easy-calving offspring.Calf size measurements were positively correlated with heifer weight and pelvic area; however, correlations tended to be low. Breed of calf, sire, heifer weight I and II and pelvic area I, II and III accounted for only 23.6% of the variation in calf birth weight.Charolais calves were larger (P<.05) and had more dystocia (P<.05) than Hereford or Angus sired calves. Hereford sired crossbred calves were larger (P<.05) and had more dystocia than Angus crossbred or straightbred calves. Angus crossbred calves were larger (P<.05) but had no more dystocia than Angus straightbred calves.Heritability estimates for calf body length (0.35) and calf hip width (0.42) indicate calf skeletal measurements were more heritable than calf birth weight (0.28).Pelvic area measurements were correlated (P<.01) with heifer weight; however, heifer weight I and II accounted for only 37% and 30% of the variability in pelvic area I and II, respectively. Average pelvic area was largest in Charolais heifers, followed by Crossbred and Angus heifers. Pelvic area growth was .275 cm2/day in Angus, .254 cm2/day in Crossbred, and .250 cm2/day in Charolais heifers.Dystocia score was most highly related to calf size and pelvic area I. Pooled over all breeds, a regression analysis showed 37% of the variability in dystocia score being accounted for by the ratio of calf birth weight to calf body length and pelvic erea I. Very little increase in the R2 value occurred by the addition of the other independent variables.Histogram analyses demonstrates that a constant level of dystocia can be maintained only if pelvic area increases in proportion to calf size. However, regardless of the size of calf, heifers that had very small pelvic openings had a high rate of dystocia, just as heifers having very large calves experienced high rates of dystocia even when they had large pelves.  相似文献

If medical management of dystocia has failed or is inadvisable, a Cesarean section is indicated. The necessity of surgery is primarily based on the condition of the dam, progression of labor, and fetal heart rate. Timely intervention is crucial for optimal fetal and maternal survival. Surgical technique may vary, based on the needs of each individual case. There are many options for each portion of the surgery, including the choice of anesthetic protocol, abdominal approach, uterine incision location, and post-surgical pain management. Indications for surgery and some of the options for each step of the procedure are presented. Episiotomy is rarely used to treat dystocia and therefore, it is discussed only briefly.  相似文献

Records of 2191 calvings from the Clemson University Beef Physiology Unit between 1981 and 1993 were analyzed to determine factors affecting malpresentation, mortality and dystocia. Only 20 (0.91%) parturitions involved malpresentation: posterior presentation (n = 14), leg deviations (n = 3), head deviations (n = 2) and breech birth (n = 1). Dystocia affected calf mortality within 24 h of birth (P < 0.05), with mortality increasing as the severity of dystocia increased. There was an overall 4.5% death loss within 24 h of birth, with 4 and 7% mortality rates for calves from multiparous and primiparous dams, respectively (P < 0.05). Mortality was higher for bull vs heifer calves (P < 0.05). Ninety-four percent of calvings were unassisted, while 6% were assisted births. Dystocia was greater (P < 0.01) in primiparous (17%) than in multiparous dams (4%). In births involving dystocia, 28.1% required mild traction, 69.3% required heavy traction and 2.6% required Cesarean section. Birth weights associated with normal births and mild traction (36 and 36 kg) were lighter than those associated with heavy traction and Cesarean section (40 and 42 kg, respectively; P < 0.05). In conclusion, malpresentations were too few to be of significance, and dystocia influenced mortality within 24 h of birth. Calf birth weight and parity of dam explained most of the observed variations in dystocia.  相似文献

Newborn southern elephant seal pups were reported by Laws (1953) to be "to some extent poikilothermic at birth." Rectal temperatures of known age southern elephant seal pups were recorded during the 1985 pupping season at Macquarie Island. The mean pup rectal temperature was found to be 381°C ± 0.1°C SEM ( n = 131, range = 36.5°-39.1°C). Pups at two hours, six hours, and one day after birth had significantly higher rectal temperatures than pups two, three, or four days of age. Rectal temperatures of neonatal southern elephant seals were within the range observed for other pinnipeds, (but never as low as the 31°C previously observed for southern elephant seals at Signy Island in 1953). A significant though weak positive correlation was found between pup temperature and body weight. However, no correlation between pup temperature and age or any environmental factor was found. These observations demonstrated that southern elephant seal pups at Macquarie Island are homeothermic, rather than heterothermic from birth.  相似文献

Thirty-eight percent (6 16 ) of the ewes with a previous history of dystocia and 15% (2 13 ) of the ewes with no dystocia in 4 lambings, had difficult births in 1976. Despite large variations in plasma progesterone concentrations among ewes at the same stage of gestation there were no differences in the progesterone concentration during the last 30 days of gestation for both single- and twin-bearing ewes with or without a history of dystocia, nor for single-bearing ewes with or without a dystocia. The progesterone concentrations declined during the last 10 days before parturition in ewes with and without dystocia. The lambs from single-bearing ewes with a dystocia did not have heavier birth weights than the lambs from single-bearing ewes without a dystocia.  相似文献

Birth records of 369 288 calvings of 160 188 Meuse-Rhine-Yssel cows were analysed to assess the influence of factors associated with retained placenta. Special emphasis was placed on the analysis of a subset containing data on births involving a single live calf and an easy or normal calving process. The overall rate of incidence of retained placenta was 6.6%. The rate increased during the years studied. Abortion, stillbirth and multiple birth caused a marked increase in rate, as did difficult calving, caesarean section and fetotomy. After adjusting for these factors, analysis of the corrected subset showed that the rate of incidence increased with age of the dam. Gestation length prior to retention and birth weight were also associated with higher rates. The combination of short gestation length (<270 days) and low birth weight (⩽37 kg) was associated with the highest risk of retained placenta. High birth weights mainly caused higher rates when related to dystocia. The incidence rate in cows delivering a male calf was only slightly higher than in cows delivering a female calf. Cows having retained placenta for a first or second time were three and six times, respectively, as likely to do so again at a subsequent parturition when compared with cows which had not had retained placenta previously.  相似文献

Understanding the ecological factors influencing African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) abundance and distribution is crucial for their conservation management in Central Africa. Dung surveys have been conducted at the landscape scale and confirmed the overwhelming impact of anthropogenic activities on forest elephants. We present results from a small-scale survey in a pristine protected area without anthropogenic activities to elucidate the ecological factors influencing forest elephant density. We conducted a line transect dung survey in a small study area (110 km2) around Mbeli Bai, a natural forest clearing in the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, Republic of Congo, and compare results with a landscape survey conducted during the same period. We used habitat specific dung decay data collected on site to estimate elephant density using distance sampling. We fitted Generalized Additive Models to elephant dung encounter rate using explanatory variables collected during the transect survey and from geospatial data. The small-scale survey revealed a precise estimate of forest elephant density that was twice as high as the result from a landscape survey with higher density in mixed species forest for the small-scale survey. We could not find an impact of the proximity of forest clearings and proximity to rivers at the small scale. Fine-scale habitat features, e.g. degree of canopy and understorey closure, had little explanatory power for elephant dung encounter rate. Small-scale dung surveys are a useful method to reveal spatio-temporal variation in forest elephant density and distribution which can inform conservation practitioners in a timely manner. Combining monitoring methods at various spatial scales improves our knowledge and conservation efforts of forest elephants. Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park is a stronghold for forest elephants and of global importance for their conservation.

Recent comparative data reveal that formant frequencies are cues to body size in animals, due to a close relationship between formant frequency spacing, vocal tract length and overall body size. Accordingly, intriguing morphological adaptations to elongate the vocal tract in order to lower formants occur in several species, with the size exaggeration hypothesis being proposed to justify most of these observations. While the elephant trunk is strongly implicated to account for the low formants of elephant rumbles, it is unknown whether elephants emit these vocalizations exclusively through the trunk, or whether the mouth is also involved in rumble production. In this study we used a sound visualization method (an acoustic camera) to record rumbles of five captive African elephants during spatial separation and subsequent bonding situations. Our results showed that the female elephants in our analysis produced two distinct types of rumble vocalizations based on vocal path differences: a nasally- and an orally-emitted rumble. Interestingly, nasal rumbles predominated during contact calling, whereas oral rumbles were mainly produced in bonding situations. In addition, nasal and oral rumbles varied considerably in their acoustic structure. In particular, the values of the first two formants reflected the estimated lengths of the vocal paths, corresponding to a vocal tract length of around 2 meters for nasal, and around 0.7 meters for oral rumbles. These results suggest that African elephants may be switching vocal paths to actively vary vocal tract length (with considerable variation in formants) according to context, and call for further research investigating the function of formant modulation in elephant vocalizations. Furthermore, by confirming the use of the elephant trunk in long distance rumble production, our findings provide an explanation for the extremely low formants in these calls, and may also indicate that formant lowering functions to increase call propagation distances in this species''.  相似文献

Studies were carried out on the prevalence of dystocia and losses at parturition and post-partum following early mating and first breeding in 15 Nigerian indigenous pigs. Six were 8 months old at the time of their first farrowing, while nine were 11 or 12 months at the time of their first farrowing. Forty-six piglets were born, of which 11 died at birth (24%) and a further 18 during the next 7 days (total loss 63.0%). The six pigs that farrowed at 8 months of age had smaller mean litters and birth weights, a higher incidence of dystocia and higher piglet mortality at birth than those that farrowed later (32 with 91% survival). However, increased age at first farrowing did not reduce the high death rate during the first week (50% of piglets which survived at birth in both groups). This was attributed to starvation due to poor mothering ability following first farrowing since there was no agalactia or mastitis.  相似文献

We carried out a chart review study to determine the rate of diagnosis of dystocia (abnormal progress) and the use of cesarean section to treat dystocia among 3887 primiparous women who gave birth to a single baby in the vertex presentation at four hospitals in Ottawa-Carleton in 1984. Of the 3740 women who had some labour 1127 (30.1%) were given a diagnosis of dystocia. Cesarean section for dystocia was done during all phases of labour (41% of procedures in the latent phase, 38% in the active phase and 21% in the second stage). The cesarean section rate varied among the hospitals from 11.8% to 19.6%. A total of 75% of the cesarean sections were for dystocia, disproportion or failed induction. The findings suggest that cesarean section is being done for disproportion without a trial of labour beyond the latent phase and for dystocia in the absence of fetal distress. If these practices were modified the cesarean section rate could be reduced from 16% to about 8%, the rate found in some other centres and that observed in Canada in the early 1970s.  相似文献

The economic importance of dystocia in terms of calf losses and subsequent impaired reproductive performance has been well documented (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). The incidence of dystocia must be minimized to improve reproductive performance and maximize profits. The occurrence of dystocia in primiparous heifers is primarily a function of two factors: size of the calf and pelvic area of the dam (6, 7, 8, 9). There are medical (ie- late abortion, hydrops, monsters) and hormonal reasons for dystocia these will not be reviewed in this paper. Primarily, the relationship of calf size and pelvic area and the factors which affect them will be reviewed.  相似文献

The Lao People??s Democratic Republic (PDR) may have the largest Asian elephant population in Indochina. However, elephants on Lao PDR??s Nakai Plateau are potentially threatened by the construction of a hydropower dam that will flood important habitat. We conducted a non-invasive genetic study of elephants in this region to provide baseline data on genetic diversity and social structure prior to dam construction. For the 102 elephants we detected, values of observed heterozygosity (0.711) and allelic diversity (8.0 alleles/locus) at microsatellite loci were higher than those found in elephant populations in India and Vietnam, while mitochondrial diversity (haplotype diversity 0.741; nucleotide diversity 0.011) was similar to that reported for the Lao/Vietnam region. Six mitochondrial haplotypes were detected, representing both major clades previously reported in this species. Relatedness estimates between females and young detected near each other are consistent with familial relationships, and relatedness estimates between adult males and females suggest male locational dispersal. Since family group structure appears to be intact in the Nakai region, these elephants will likely move as relatively large family groups in response to habitat disturbance. These results have positive implications for the viability of the elephant population in this region, demonstrate its conservation significance, and will be valuable for predicting and monitoring the effects of the hydropower dam over time.  相似文献

Despite many advances in animal care and welfare over the past few decades, zoos have been criticized recently for the quality of their elephant management programs. More specifically, critics have argued that elephants live miserable lives in captivity and thus should not be kept in zoos. Poor health and reproductive success, they say, are the result of the combined impact of: a lack of exercise; exposure to cold temperatures and disease; and stress due to the use of “brutal” training techniques, chaining and inappropriate social environments. Everyone, including zoo professionals, seems to agree that improvements in zoo elephant management are necessary and appropriate. However, there is considerable disagreement on how to proceed and little information on which to base such decisions. One tactic that the critics have adopted in their efforts to promote change is their frequent reference to “nature” as a yardstick for gauging the adequacy of zoo animal management and care. An argument is made that direct zoo–wild comparisons are of questionable utility and may be invalid from a scientific perspective. Some critics talk about “nature” as if it represented a fixed set of rules by which captive managers must either abide by or risk diminishing the health and welfare of their charges. However, many aspects of elephant natural history vary greatly depending on prevailing environmental conditions and elephants may be much more flexible than many critics are giving them credit for. Thus, although zoo animal managers should look to nature for clues about how to best care for captive elephants, they should not feel constrained by them. This revelation is not intended as an excuse for poor elephant management or to support the status quo. On the contrary, a better approach is to develop realistic and biologically meaningful metrics that reflect the quality of elephant care and welfare and to use them to measure the success of evolving zoo elephant programs. Purpose

To describe the risk factors and labor characteristics of Clavicular fracture (CF) and brachial plexus injury (BPI); and compare antenatal and labor characteristics and prognosis of obstetrical BPI associated with shoulder dystocia with obstetrical BPI not associated with shoulder dystocia.

Methods

This retrospective study consisted of women who gave birth to an infant with a fractured clavicle or BPI between January 2009 and June 2013. Antenatal and neonatal data were compared between groups. The control group (1300) was composed of the four singleton vaginal deliveries that immediately followed each birth injury. A multivariable logistic regression model, with backward elimination, was constructed in order to find independent risk factors associated with BPI and CF. A subgroup analysis involved comparison of features of BPI cases with or without associated shoulder dystocia.

Results

During the study period, the total number of vaginal deliveries was 44092. The rates of CF, BPI and shoulder dystocia during the study period were 0,6%, 0,16% and 0,29%, respectively. In the logistic regression model, shoulder dystocia, GDM, multiparity, gestational age >42 weeks, protracted labor, short second stage of labor and fetal birth weight greater than 4250 grams increased the risk of CF independently. Shoulder dystocia and protracted labor were independently associated with BPI when controlled for other factors. Among neonates with BPI whose injury was not associated with shoulder dystocia, five (12.2%) sustained permanent injury, whereas one neonate (4.5%) with BPI following shoulder dystocia sustained permanent injury (p = 0.34).

Conclusion

BPI not associated with shoulder dystocia might have a higher rate of concomitant CF and permanent sequelae.  相似文献

Elephant and fire are considered to be among the most important agents that can modify the African savanna ecosystem. Although the synergistic relationship between these two key ecological drivers is well documented, it has proved much more difficult to establish the relative effects they have on savanna vegetation structure at a fine-scale over time. In this study, we explore the comparative impacts of fire and elephant on 2,522 individually identified large trees (≥5 m in height) in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Data were collected from 21 transects first surveyed in April 2006 and resurveyed in November 2008, to determine the relative importance of past damage by these agents on subsequent impacts and mortality. The occurrence of fire or elephant damage in 2006 affected the amount of tree volume subsequently removed by both these agents; elephant removed more tree volume from previously burned trees and the impact of subsequent fire was higher on previously burned or elephant-utilized trees than on undamaged trees. Mortality was also affected by an interaction between previous and recent damage, as the probability of mortality was highest for trees that suffered from fire or elephant utilization after being pushed over. Subsequent fire damage, but not elephant utilization, on debarked trees also increased the probability of mortality. Mortality was twice (4.6% per annum) that of trees progressing into the ≥5 m height class, suggesting an overall decline in large tree density during the 30-month study period. The responses of large trees were species and landscape-specific in terms of sensitivity to elephant and fire impacts, as well as for levels of mortality and progression into the ≥5 m height class. These results emphasize the need for fine-scale site-specific knowledge for effective landscape level understanding of savanna dynamics.  相似文献

The African elephant, Loxodonta africana, is under threat from habitat loss, poaching and human–elephant conflict. To mitigate for impact of habitat loss and reduce conflict, connectivity between elephant habitats can be improved through the protection of corridor areas. This study looks at elephant distribution and movement patterns within the Kasigau Wildlife Corridor (KWC) within the Tsavo Conservation Area in South‐east Kenya. Elephant presence data were obtained from observations by rangers during routine patrols across KWC, and were analysed in MaxEnt. The environmental factors predicting elephant distribution and density were tested, as well as the relationship between elephant maximum entropy and the presence and abundance of other wildlife. Seasonal variations in temperature and precipitation, plus presence of waterholes were found to play significant roles in elephant distribution across KWC. Higher elephant densities were not found to correlate with lower densities of other wildlife species; indeed, during the dry seasons, elephant presence was associated with greater wild herbivore densities. Besides illustrating the importance of the KWC for elephant conservation in the Tsavo ecosystem, both as a key corridor and habitat, this study also hopes to highlight the untapped utility of routine ranger patrol data, and encourage the use of such presence‐only data for deducing important knowledge for conservation of biodiversity.  相似文献
