Turbot Scophthalmus maximus maximum oxygen uptake following feeding and exhaustive exercise increased from 107 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 6° C to c . 218 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 18° C, then increased slightly from 18 to 22° C to 224 mg O2 kg−1 h−1. Standard oxygen uptake increased exponentially as a function of temperature from 11 mg O2 kg −1 h−1 at 6° C to 66 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 22° C. Gradual reduction in oxygen concentration to 87–90% air saturation at 6, 10. 18° C and <80% at 14 and 22° C limited the maximum metabolic rate but, supersaturation (>100% saturation) had little effect. Metabolic scope attained a maximum of 176 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 at 18° C. Interpolation of the results showed that this value changed little between 16 and 20° C. It is suggested that this temperature range is optimal for turbot of c . 500 g. A comparison with a previous study on feeding demand in intensive farming conditions showed a linear relationship between appetite and metabolic scope. It is concluded that the ability of a fish to supply energy (including the energy requirement of digestive metabolism) above a standard level is a limiting factor in the manifestation of its feeding demand.  相似文献

Abstract The potential role of tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) and eicosanoids in the pathogenesis of experimental neonatal sepsis models was investigated. Lethality was induced in neonatal rats by administration of heat killed group B streptococci (GBS, 7 mg kg−1 intracardially) or Salmonella enteritidis endotoxin (0.35 mg kg−1 intracardially). The relative efficacy of six compounds with putative TNFα and eicosanoid inhibitory actions were tested. These were: ibuprofen (3 and 20 mg kg−1), a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor; CGS85515 (30 mg kg−1), a lipoxygenase inhibitor; LY203647 (30 mg kg−1), a leukotriene D4 receptor antagonist; pentoxifylline (10, 50 and 100 mg kg−1), a TNF inhibitor; cloricromene (2 and 10 mg kg−1), a thromboxane A2 synthetase inhibitor with TNFα inhibitory actions; and SKF86002 (2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg kg−1), a dual cyclo-oxygenase/lipoxygenase inhibitor with TNFα inhibitory activity. Pentoxifylline, cloricromene and SKF86002, when given intraperitoneally 2 h before challenge, produced 45, 52 and 61% reductions, respectively, in plasma levels of TNFα at 2.5 h post-injection with killed GBS ( P < 0.05). On the contrary, pretreatment with ibuprofen, CGS85515 or LY203647 did not significantly affect TNFα levels. All compounds significantly attenuated the lethality by killed GBS and S. enteritidis endotoxin. These data suggest that TNFα and eicoisanoids contribute to the pathogenesis of shock induced by killed GBS and endotoxemia.  相似文献

Routine oxygen consumption rates of bonnethead sharks, Sphyrna tiburo , increased from 141·3±29·7 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during autumn to 218·6±64·2 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during spring, and 329·7±38·3 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during summer. The rate of routine oxygen consumption increased over the entire seasonal temperature range (20–30° C) at a Q 10=2·34.  相似文献

Snakeheads were adapted to fresh water (1 mOsm kg−1), 25% sea water (230 mOsm kg−1), 33% sea water (320 mOsm kg−1) and 40% sea water (380 mOsm kg−1) for 20 days. Exposure to salt water resulted in tissue dehydration, elevations of plasma osmolality, Na+, Mg2+, Cland protein concentrations and stimulation of branchial Na+-K+-ATPase activity. These changes were accompanied by concomitant decline of the hepatosomatic index and liver glycogen concentration. The routine rate of oxygen consumption was increased in snake-heads adapted to 33% sea water. These data were taken to indicate a stressful effect of salinity to the snakehead despite documentation of its ability to penetrate into brackish waters.  相似文献

After stimulation in a hypotonic solution (9.4 mOsm kg−1), inseminated eggs of the chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta initiate cleavages in isotonic salmon Ringer's solution (267.3 mOsm kg−1) containing 3.2 mM Ca2+ ions. Blastomeres of these eggs, however, separate from each other and the enveloping layer is not observed at the blastula stage. An increase in external divalent cations rescues the separation; the concentration of CaCl2 in the external medium should be 25 mM or more to induce close contact of blastomeres and the formation of an enveloping layer in isotonic salt solutions. The effectiveness of Ca2+ ions can be substituted by Mg2+, Sr2+ and Zn2+ ions; the same results are obtained in isotonic MgCl2 and SrCl2 solutions (100 mM) or in isotonic salmon Ringer's solution containing Zn ions (6.2 mM). The close contact of blastomeres and the formation of an enveloping layer are also observed in a low Ca2+ concentration (< 0.1 mM) in a hypotonic salt solution (9.4 mOsm kg−1). The Ca2+ level in the external medium to induce the enveloping layer formation seems to be correlated with the salinity of the incubation medium. It is suggested that adhesion molecules on the surface of blastomeres in the chum salmon eggs are different in properties from those found in sea urchin and other fish species.  相似文献

The diel rhythms in metabolic rate ( MR ) and activity level ( AL ) were measured for single post-hatching dogfish (weight range, 2.76–10.61 g) at 15° C by the indirect calorimetric method of rate of oxygen consumption ( V O2) and by video-observation respectively, over a period of 72 b. The mean VO 2 increased from 62.0 (s.e. 2.9) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 in the daylight hours to 85.5 (s.e. 3.1) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 during the dark (light regíme, 12 h L: 12 h D). The simultaneous measurement of A L also showed mean night elevation from 0.6 (s.e. 0.2) min h−1 in the light phase to 14.5 (s.e. 1.6) min h−1 during the darkness. Bimodal nocturnal activity (BNA) was exhibited by the post-hatching dogfish within the 12 h dark period, with V O2 increasing from 71.4 (s.e. 2.8) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 before 01.00 hours to 99.5 (s.e. 4.2) mg O2 kg−1 h−1 after 01.00 hours. Similarly, A L also increased from 8.9 (s.e. I.7)min h−1 before 01.00 hours to 21.1 (s.e. 2.8) min h−1 after 01.00 hours. The importance of the results presented to the natural behavioural ecology of the hatching dogfish are discussed.  相似文献

A significantly higher concentration of testicular spermatozoa was obtained from freshwater Oreochromis mossambicus (9·9×109 spermatozoa ml−1) than seawater O. mossambicus (4·6×109 spermatozoa ml−1). The mean osmolality of the urine of freshwater fish (78·5 mOsmol kg−1) was significantly different from that of seawater fish (304·8 mOsmol kg−1). The mean length of the mid-piece of the spermatozoa together with the tail was more variable in freshwater O. mossambicus (8·80±0·23μm) than in seawater specimens (8·27±0·18 μm). Stripped sperm of freshwater O. mossambicus was highly contaminated by urine which was a good activator of sperm motility in O. mossambicus held in both fresh and sea water. The osmolality for initiation of motility in freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa was from 0 to 333 mOsmol kg−1 while for seawater O. mossambicus spermatozoa it was from 0 to 1022 mOsmol kg−1. The optimum osmolality for motility was from 70 to 333 mOsmol kg−1 for freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa and from 333 to 645 mOsmol kg−1 for seawater fish. In freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa, the presence of 20 mM CaCl2 increased the permissive osmolality of NaCl from 184 to 645 mOsmol kg−1. For seawater O. mossambicus spermatozoa, solutions of NaCl devoid of CaCl2 were unable initiate motility, but the addition of 1·5 to 30 mM CaCl2 to the NaCl solution (0–934 mOsmol kg1) had a full motility initiating effect.  相似文献

At 14° C, standard metabolic rate (75·1 mg O2 h−1 kg−1), routine metabolic rate (108.8 mg O2 h−1 kg−1), active metabolic rate ( c . 380 mg O2 h−1 kg−1), critical swimming speed (Ucrit 1·7 BL s−1), heart rate 47 min−1), dorsal aortic pressure (3·2 kPa) and ventilation frequency (63 min−1) for triploid brown trout Salmo trutta were within the ranges reported for diploid brown trout and other salmonids at the same temperature. During prolonged swimming ( c . 80% U crit), cardiac output increased by 2·3-fold due to increases in heart rate (1·8-fold) and stroke volume (1·2-fold). At 18° C, although standard and routine metabolic rates, as well as resting heart rate and ventilation frequency increased significantly, active metabolic rate and certain cardiorespiratory variables during exercise did not differ from those values for fish acclimated to 14° C. As a result, factorial metabolic scope was reduced (2·93-fold at 18° C v . 5·13-fold at 14° C). Therefore, it is concluded that cardiorespiratory performance in triploid brown trout was not unusual at 18° C, but that reduced factorial metabolic scope may be a contributing factor to the mortality observed in triploid brown trout at temperatures near 18° C.  相似文献

Young lemon sharks, Negaprion brevirostris , were kept under controlled conditions in an aquarium and fed blue runner, Caranx crysos , at different ration levels. The relationship between feeding rate and growth rate was best described by a von Bertalanffy growth curve, which predicted a maximum growth rate of 140 kJ kg−1 day−1 (0·66% b.w. day−1), a maintenance ration of 199 kJ kg−1 day−1 (1·06% b.w. day−1), and losses due to starvation of -236kJ kg−1 day−1 (1·11% b.w. day−1). The relationship between gross conversion efficiency ( K 1) and feeding rate was also examined. K1 ranged from - 64 to 25% and did not drop at high ration levels. Activity levels of both starved sharks and sharks fed at maintenance were not significantly different (0·2 body lengths s−1). K 1 values generated from both laboratory and field data suggest that young lemon sharks can convert food to new tissue as efficiently as teleosts.  相似文献

The structure of six Irish kefir samples was studied in the electron microscope, and the microbial composition and fermentation kinetics during growth in 10% reconstituted skim milk at 21°C. The microbial composition of the six samples was similar; at the end of the fermentation the counts of lactococci, leuconostocs, lactobacilli, acetic acid bacteria and yeasts were 109, 108, 5 × 106, 105 and 106 ml−1 respectively; the levels of acetic acid bacteria and lactobacilli showed some intersample differences. Lactate was the major metabolite followed in order by ethanol, acetate and acetoin. The final concentrations of L-lactate produced (66–90 mmol kg−1) were 10-fold higher than those of D-lactate. Acetate and ethanol concentrations varied from 4 to 14 and 2 to 40 mmol kg−'1 respectively. The rates of citrate utilization and concentration of acetoin produced during growth differed between samples. Scanning electron microscopy showed not only variation between the interior and exterior of the sample but also large variation between different sections of the interiors and exteriors of the same sample. Long and short, and straight and curved rods and yeasts were seen in all samples, the curved rods observed in the interior, but lactococci were seen on the surface of only one sample. Growth performance, mortality and carotenoid pigmentation were studied in triplicate groups each with 1000 swim-up larvae of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), derived from five groups of female broodstock fed diets with 0.07, 12.5, 33.3, 65.1 or 92.9 mg astaxanthin kg−1, respectively. The first feeding fry (initial weight range from 113 to 148 mg) were fed a diet not supplemented with carotenoids in an experiment lasting 45 days. Fry were initially sampled for astaxanthin content and initial weight, and in subsequent 15-day intervals to determine weights, condition factors (CF), specific growth rates (SGR) and thermal growth coefficients (TGC). Total carotenoid concentration of the larvae was highly linearly correlated to that of the eggs ( r 2 = 0.97, P = 0.002). About 59–67% of fry carotenoids consisted of esterified astaxanthin, and on average 39.7% of the egg carotenoids were recovered in the fry. Overall (0–45 days) SGRs and TGCs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the offspring of the four groups of females fed supplemented diets (12.5–92.9 mg astaxanthin kg−1) than in offspring of females fed the non-supplemented diet. TGCs (0–45 days) within groups derived from broodstock supplemented with astaxanthin were similar (P > 0.05), but higher than in the group derived from females fed the diet not supplemented with astaxanthin (P < 0.05). Mortality (average 0.76%) was not significantly affected by treatment. The study indicates that dietary supplement of astaxanthin (>12.5 mg kg−1) to maternal broodstock diets improves offspring SGR and TGC with up to 33 and 38%, respectively.  相似文献

Standard metabolic rate (SMR), active metabolic rate (AMR) and critical oxygen saturation ( Scrit ) were measured in Atlantic cod Gadus morhua at 5, 10 and 15° C. The SMR was 35.5, 57.0 and 78.2 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 and Scrit was 16.5, 23.2 and 30.3%, at 5, 10 and 15° C, respectively. Previously reported SMR for Atlantic cod from arctic waters at 4° C was twice that measured at 5° C in the present study. A possible intraspecific latitudinal difference in the SMR is discussed. The AMR was 146.6, 197.9 and 200.4 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 and the critical swimming speed ( Ucrit ) was 1 6, 1.7 and 1.9 at 5, 10 and 15° C, respectively. The maximum oxygen consumption was found to be associated with exercise, rather than recovery from exercise as previously reported in another Study of Cod metabolism.  相似文献

The behaviour of juvenile Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.) , to an abrupt concentration step of L-amino acids, L-alanine and ammonium chloride was studied by fluviarium technique. The emission rates of these substances were studied. Juvenile Arctic charr emit 8.0 × 10−4 mol total ammonia-N kg−1 h−1 and 3.3 × I0−5 mol amino acids kg−1 h−1. In behaviour tests the charr avoided 5.6x 10−6and 5.6 × 10−7 M ammonium chloride. The 17 L-amino acid mixture, ranked as observed in the analysis of emission, was avoided at 4.6 × 10−7 M, while 100 times dilution of this value gave neither avoidance nor attraction. The charr avoided L-alanine tested alone at the concentration of 4.6 × 10 −7 M. Anosmic charr showed neither avoidance nor attraction to the mixture of 17 amino acids tested at 4.6 × 10−7 M. The results indicate that ammonia as well as emitted amino acids are not responsible for the olfactory mediated attraction to conspecific odour shown earlier in Arctic charr. On the contrary, these substances may have a negative effect by reducing the strength of attraction.  相似文献

In trials conducted in Benin, conidia of Beauveria bassiana were evaluated as a control method against the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus , in stored cowpea. In the first trial using a high artificial infestation of C.   maculatus in 8-kg batches of cowpea in jerry cans under typical conditions, concentrations of 1 × 109 and 1 × 1011 conidia kg−1 were compared with lemon grass oil at 2 mL kg−1 and the synthetic pesticide mixture of 1.5% pirimiphos methyl + 0.05% deltamethrin at 0.5 g kg−1. After 2 months of storage, seed losses (SD) were 20.63 (5.3)% in the untreated control, 8.04 (3.2)% in the low-dose B.   bassiana group, 3.12 (1.3)% in the high-dose B.   bassiana group, 2.52 (0.4)% in the lemon grass oil group and 0% in the pirimiphos methyl + deltamethrin group. In a second trial with natural infestations in 50-kg batches of cowpea in 200-L drums, treatment with B.   bassiana 1 × 1011 conidia kg−1 was compared with pirimiphos methyl + deltamethrin at 0.5 g kg−1. After 6 months of storage on six farms, losses reached 30.76 (1.5)% in the control, 1.28 (0.2)% in the pirimiphos methyl + deltamethrin group and 3.69 (0.6)% in the B.   bassiana group.  相似文献

The effect of altering serum cortisol concentrations on the immune response was elucidated in endrin- and non-endrin-exposed rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri. Fish were immunized with 10 μg of Yersinia ruckeri O-antigen following 30 days of treatment. The migration inhibition factor assay (MIF), plaque-forming cell assay (PFC) and serum agglutination titres (SAG) were performed 2, 14 and 30 days post-antigen inoculation. Endrin exposure was continued subsequent to antigen inoculation. Control fish were fed 20 and 35 mg kg−1 body weight day−1 of cortisol and metyrapone, respectively. Endrin-exposed fish received 35 mg kg−1 body weight day−1 of metyrapone in their diet. Control fish receiving cortisol had significantly reduced MIF, PFC and SAG responses. The MIF response was completely restored in endrin-exposed fish receiving dietary metyrapone. The PFC response and SAG titres were partially restored, 61 and 69% respectively, in endrin-exposed fish receiving metyrapone. The results indicate that elevated serum cortisol concentration obtained in endrin-exposed fish has a central role in repression of the immune response.  相似文献

The branchial and intestinal influx of caesium (Cs) in the rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) were measured using a perfused whole-body preparation. The branchial influx of Cs was small, 0–31 μmoles kg−1 h−1 at an external concentration of 1 mm. Branchial Cs influx was saturable, with a Km of 1–92 mm and a Jmax of l.05μmoles kg−1 h−1. Intestinal Cs influx was not saturable, but was directly proportional to the mucosal Cs concentration. Intestinal Cs influx was approximately 10–40 times greater than branchial Cs influx over a wide range of external Cs concentrations. These results are discussed with respect to mechanisms of Cs uptake and to the relative accumulation of radiocaesium from water and food in the environment.  相似文献

Abstract Microbial populations, nitrogen mineralization potentials, and denitrification enzyme activities were examined in two abandoned carbolithic minesoils. Numbers and activities of bacteria and fungi were lower in nonamended than in lime and/or fly ash amended sites. Rates of aerobic NO3 production (3 to 38 μg-N kg−1 h−1) and anaerobic NO3 reduction to N2O (5 to 68 μg-N kg−1 h−1) were measured. Organisms capable of N2O production under anaerobic soil conditions were present in low numbers, and their activity was restricted in part by low soil pH. Nondenitrifying nitrate-reducing bacteria were more diverse and in greater numbers than respiratory denitrifiers and may have been responsible for N2O production in assays measuring denitrification enzyme activity.  相似文献

The effects of intraperitoneal injections of cortical and ovarian steroids and trophic (mammalian) hormones on ovulation, ovarian hydration and the distribution of sodium ions in muscles and ovary was studied in Tilapia nilotica . Cortisol, corticosterone and oestradiol 17p (50–250 mg kg−1 B.W.) induced ovulation in a dose-dependent manner and increased the degree of hydration of muscle and ovarian tissues. The sodium ion content of muscles was reduced and that of ovaries increased following treatment with these hormones. Oestrone, oestriol and progesterone (60–245 mg kg−1 B.W.) failed to induce ovulation but produced the same types of effects on the water and sodium ion content of muscles and ovaries as the other steroids. Human chorionic Gonadotrophin, HCG, (1200–12 000 I.U. kg−1 B.W.) also induced ovulation and increased the degree of hydration of muscles and ovaries and increased the sodium ion concentration in ovarian and reduced that of muscle tissues. Pregnant Mare Gonadotrophin, PMG, in doses similar to those of HCG, did not induce ovulation in any of the treated fish and did not significantly alter the water or sodium ion content of muscles and ovaries.  相似文献
