The goal of this research was to study the postural adjustments that occur during the course of a voluntary movement (Simultaneous Postural Adjustments: SPA). A pointing task performed at maximal velocity was considered and upper limb kinematics and body kinetics were recorded. A 2-DOF model was elaborated that distinguishes between the body segments that are mobilized in order to perform the pointing movement. These segments are the right upper limb (termed the “focal” component) and the rest of the body (termed the “postural” component). This model allowed for the calculation of both sub-systems? kinetics and a comparison of the resultant reaction (RoSh) with the corresponding action (AoSh) at the shoulder level. The analysis was based on the ellipsoidal shape of their relationship. The ellipse computation (“Lissajous ellipse”) allowed the time lag to be estimated. The results showed that the kinetics of the postural component preceded that of the focal ones and that the time lag during the SPA was not statistically different from the APA duration (dAPA). In addition, the kinetics of the postural component were found to be opposed to the perturbation induced by the pointing movement, but only during part of the SPA time interval. It was concluded that the postural component plays a dual role during the movement, which consists of postural stabilization and propulsive action, with one prevailing over the other depending on the time-instant of movement evolution. This new evidence in healthy subjects is helpful to further specify differences associated with motor impairments.  相似文献

This report is the first systematic evaluation of the effects of prolonged weightlessness on the bipedal postural control processes during self-generated perturbations produced by voluntary upper limb movements. Spaceflight impacts humans in a variety of ways, one of which is compromised postflight postural control. We examined the neuromuscular activation characteristics and center of pressure (COP) motion associated with arm movement of eight subjects who experienced long-duration spaceflight (3--6 mo) aboard the Mir space station. Surface electromyography, arm acceleration, and COP motion were collected while astronauts performed rapid unilateral shoulder flexions before and after spaceflight. Subjects generally displayed compromised postural control after flight, as evidenced by modified COP peak-to-peak anterior-posterior and mediolateral excursion, and pathlength relative to preflight values. These changes were associated with disrupted neuromuscular activation characteristics, particularly after the completion of arm acceleration (i.e., when subjects were attempting to maintain upright posture in response to self-generated perturbations). These findings suggest that, although the subjects were able to assemble coordination modes that enabled them to generate rapid arm movements, the subtle control necessary to maintain bipedal equilibrium evident in their preflight performance is compromised after long-duration spaceflight.  相似文献

Posturo-kinetic programming was investigated by a simple reaction time paradigm. Standing subjects performed voluntary upper limb elevations differing by the importance of their destabilizing effect on the initial balance. It was shown that: The reaction time varied according to the destabilizing effect of the forthcoming movement. These variations were due to differences in the duration of postural adjustments which were shown to precede voluntary movement. Duration of pre-motor period, corresponding to delay between the response signal and the onset of the earliest postural adjustment, did not depend on parameters of the forthcoming movement.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine whether fatigue of postural muscles might influence the coordination between segmental posture and movement. Seven healthy adults performed series of fifteen fast wrist flexions and extensions while being instructed to keep a dominant upper limb posture as constant as possible. These series of voluntary movements were performed before and after a fatiguing submaximal isometric elbow flexion, and also with or without the help of an elbow support. Surface EMG from muscles Delto?deus anterior, Biceps brachii, Triceps brachii, Flexor carpi ulnaris, Extensor carpi radialis were recorded simultaneously with wrist, elbow and shoulder accelerations and wrist and elbow displacements. Fatigue was evidenced by a shift of the elbow and shoulder muscles EMG spectra towards low frequencies. Kinematics of wrist movements and corresponding activations of wrist prime-movers, as well as the background of postural muscle activation before wrist movement were not modified. There were only slight changes in timing of postural muscle activations. These data indicate that postural fatigue induced by a low-level isometric contraction has no effect on voluntary movement and requires no dramatic adaptation in postural control.  相似文献

Voluntary arm-raising movement performed during the upright human stance position imposes a perturbation to an already unstable bipedal posture characterised by a high body centre of mass (CoM). Inertial forces due to arm acceleration and displacement of the CoM of the arm which alters the CoM position of the whole body represent the two sources of disequilibrium. A current model of postural control explains equilibrium maintenance through the action of anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) that would offset any destabilising effect of the voluntary movement. The purpose of this paper was to quantify, using computer simulation, the postural perturbation due to arm raising movement. The model incorporated four links, with shoulder, hip, knee and ankle joints constrained by linear viscoelastic elements. The input of the model was a torque applied at the shoulder joint. The simulation described mechanical consequences of the arm-raising movement for different initial conditions. The variables tested were arm inertia, the presence or not of gravity field, the initial standing position and arm movement direction. Simulations showed that the mechanical effect of arm-raising movement was mainly local, that is to say at the level of trunk and lower limbs and produced a slight forward displacement of the CoM (1.5 mm). Backward arm-raising movement had the same effect on the CoM displacement as the forward arm-raising movement. When the mass of the arm was increased, trunk rotation increased producing a CoM displacement in the opposite direction when compared to arm movement performed without load. Postural disturbance was minimised for an initial standing posture with the CoM vertical projection corresponding to the ankle joint axis of rotation. When the model was reduced to two degrees of freedom (ankle and shoulder joints only) the postural perturbation due to arm-raising movement increased compared to the four-joints model. On the basis of these results the classical assumption that APAs stabilise the CoM is challenged.  相似文献

In healthy humans, we recorded the H reflex induced by transcutaneous stimulation of the tibial nerve (recording from the soleus muscle). In subjects in the lying position, we studied changes in the H reflex values after preceding voluntary arm movements realized with a maximum velocity after presentation of an acoustic signal. On the 200th to 300th msec after forearm flexion, long-lasting inhibition of the H reflex developed following a period of initial facilitation and reached the maximum, on average, 700 msec from the moment of the movement. Flexion of the contralateral upper limb in the elbow joint induced deeper inhibition than analogous movement of the ipsilateral arm. Long-lasting clear inhibition of the H reflex developed after arm flexion in the elbow joint but was slightly expressed after finger clenching. After inhibition reached the maximum, its time course was satisfactorily approximated by a logarithmic function of the time interval between the beginning of the conditioning voluntary movement and presentation of the test stimulus. Durations of inhibition calculated using a regression equation were equal to 6.6 sec and 8.5 sec after ipsilateral and contralateral elbow-joint flexions, respectively. Inhibition was not eliminated under conditions of tonic excitation of motoneurons of the tested muscle upon voluntary foot flexion. Long-lasting inhibition of the H reflex was also observed after electrical stimulation-induced flexions of the upper limb. The obtained data indicate that movements of the upper limb cause reflex long-lasting presynaptic inhibition of the soleus-muscle H reflex that can play a noticeable role in redistribution of the muscle tone during motor activity.  A global biomechanical model of transient push efforts is proposed where transient efforts are taken into consideration, with the aim to examine in greater depth the postural adjustments associated with voluntary efforts. In this context, the push effort is considered as a perturbation of balance, and the other reaction forces as a counter-perturbation which is necessary for the task to be performed efficiently. The subjects were asked to exert maximal horizontal two-handed isometric pushes on a dynamometric bar, as rapidly as possible. They were seated on a custom-designed device which measured global and partitive dynamic quantities. The results showed that the horizontal reaction forces and the horizontal displacement of the centre of pressure increased quasi-proportionally with the perturbation. In addition, it was established that vertical reaction forces increased at seat level whereas they decreased at foot level, resulting in minor vertical acceleration and displacement of the centre of gravity. On the contrary, the anteroposterior reaction forces increased both at foot and at seat levels. Based on a detailed examination of the various terms of the model, it is concluded that transient muscular effort induces dynamics of the postural chain. These observations support the view that there is a postural counter-perturbation which is associated with motor activity. More generally, the model helped to specify the effect of postural dynamic phenomena. It makes it possible to stress the importance of adherence at the contact level between the subject and the seat in the course of transient efforts. Dynamic movement trajectories of low mass systems have been shown to be predominantly influenced by passive viscoelastic joint forces and torques compared to momentum and inertia. The hand is comprised of 27 small mass segments. Because of the influence of the extrinsic finger muscles, the passive torques about each finger joint become a complex function dependent on the posture of multiple joints of the distal upper limb. However, biomechanical models implemented for the dynamic simulation of hand movements generally don’t extend proximally to include the wrist and distal upper limb. Thus, they cannot accurately represent these complex passive torques. The purpose of this short communication is to both describe a method to incorporate the length-dependent passive properties of the extrinsic index finger muscles into a biomechanical model of the upper limb and to demonstrate their influence on combined movement of the wrist and fingers. Leveraging a unique set of experimental data, that describes the net passive torque contributed by the extrinsic finger muscles about the metacarpophalangeal joint of the index finger as a function of both metacarpophalangeal and wrist postures, we simulated the length-dependent passive properties of the extrinsic finger muscles. Dynamic forward simulations demonstrate that a model including these properties passively exhibits coordinated movement between the wrist and finger joints, mimicking tenodesis, a behavior that is absent when the length-dependent properties are removed. This work emphasizes the importance of incorporating the length-dependent properties of the extrinsic finger muscles into biomechanical models to study healthy and impaired hand movements.  相似文献

During voluntary step initiation (SI), propulsive forces are generated during anticipatory postural adjustments (APA) which displace the centre-of-gravity (CoG) in the desired direction. These propulsive forces are implemented by ankle synergy, bilateral soleus inhibition followed by activation of tibialis anterior (TA). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fatigue applied to ankle dorsiflexors on APA associated with SI and on related motor performance. Eight young healthy participants initiated stepping before and after a protocol designed to generate fatigue in ankle dorsiflexors. Fatigue was induced by series of high-level isometric contractions performed until exhaustion. Results showed that, with fatigue, the level of TA activation during APA, anticipatory postural dynamics (backward centre-of-pressure displacement and forward CoG velocity) and related motor performance (peak of CoG velocity) were attenuated, while APA duration and total SI duration increased. These changes were interpreted as reflecting a protective strategy aiming to preserve the integrity of the fatigued muscles, rather than an impairment associated with muscle weakness.  相似文献

Anticipatory postural adjustments (APA) associated with high vertical jumping were studied in five normal men. The dependence of APA on final equilibrium and task complexity was studied by analyzing the characteristics of single versus repetitive jumps. Subjects performed series of 25 single jumps and 25 repetitive jumps on a force platform, in response to a Go signal. Surface EMG from the Soleus (SO), Tibialis anterior (TA), Vastus lateralis (VL) and Biceps femoris (BF) muscles were recorded simultaneously with the three components of the ground reaction forces.The existence of APA associated with both single and repetitive jumps was evidenced by a backward shift of the center of pressure, an SO deactivation, and a TA activation which preceded the onset of movement by hundreds of milliseconds. In repetitive jumps, SO deactivation occurred later than in single jump, whereas the center of pressure shift started earlier, lasted longer and had a greater amplitude. Moreover, repetitive jumps were initiated later with respect to the Go signal. These data show that the central nervous system anticipates not only the equilibrium disturbance caused by an initial movement but that caused by a whole sequence of movements. They also show that the corresponding APA are based heavily on a single functional ankle synergy.  相似文献

Rett syndrome is an X-linked neurodevelopmental condition mainly characterized by loss of spoken language and a regression of purposeful hand use, with the development of distinctive hand stereotypies, and gait abnormalities. Gait initiation is the transition from quiet stance to steady-state condition of walking. The associated motor program seems to be centrally mediated and includes preparatory adjustments prior to any apparent voluntary movement of the lower limbs. Anticipatory postural adjustments contribute to postural stability and to create the propulsive forces necessary to reach steady-state gait at a predefined velocity and may be indicative of the effectiveness of the feedforward control of gait. In this study, we examined anticipatory postural adjustments associated with gait initiation in eleven girls with Rett syndrome and ten healthy subjects. Muscle activity (tibialis anterior and soleus muscles), ground reaction forces and body kinematic were recorded. Children with Rett syndrome showed a distinctive impairment in temporal organization of all phases of the anticipatory postural adjustments. The lack of appropriate temporal scaling resulted in a diminished impulse to move forward, documented by an impairment in several parameters describing the efficiency of gait start: length and velocity of the first step, magnitude and orientation of centre of pressure-centre of mass vector at the instant of (swing-)toe off. These findings were related to an abnormal muscular activation pattern mainly characterized by a disruption of the synergistic activity of antagonistic pairs of postural muscles. This study showed that girls with Rett syndrome lack accurate tuning of feedforward control of gait.  相似文献

The study investigated the effects of an unilateral ankle muscle fatigue onto independent postural control parameters including the trajectories of the estimated resultant CoP (CoPres) and his components: the centre of gravity (CG) and CoP–CG trajectories.Nine healthy men realized series of 10 toe-lift immediately followed by 10 knee flexions until exhaustion with one (Ex) leg. Maximal isometric voluntary contractions, postural sway measures of each leg, and muscular activities of the ankle muscles were recorded before and immediately after the fatiguing exercise.As expected, the latter induced a decrease in maximal voluntary peak force associated with a greater variability of the relative contribution of each leg on the CoPres, enhanced all postural parameters of the non-exercised leg. A significant decreased of the tibialis anterior EMG activity for the Ex leg and an increased one for the NoEx leg. Finally, following unilateral fatigue, the body sway destabilisation seemed to occur only along the medio-lateral (ML) axis.The enhanced and greater variability of the variance along ML axis might be explained by the recourse at the loading–unloading strategy choice and suggests a central attempt to compensate for pain sensation.  相似文献

The preference for in-phase association of coupled cyclic limbs movements is well described (mirror-symmetrical patterns) and this is demonstrated by the ease of performing in-phase movements compared to anti-phase ones. The hypothesis of this study is that the easiest movement patterns are those with minor postural activity. The aim of this study was to describe postural activity in standing subjects in the sagittal and frontal planes during the execution of three upper limbs tasks (single arm, in-phase, anti-phase) at four different frequencies (from 0.6 to 1.2 Hz).We employed six infrared cameras for recording kinematics information, a force platform for measuring forces exerted on the ground, and a system for surface electromyography (SEMG). Outcome measures were: upper limb range of movement and relative-phase, centre of pressure displacement (COP), screw torque (Tz) exerted on the ground, and SEMG recordings of postural muscles (adductor longus, gluteus medius, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris).Our results show that in both the planes the in-phase task resulted in less COP displacement, torque production, and postural muscles involvement than the anti-phase and single arm tasks. This reduced need of postural control could explain the ease of performing in-phase coupled limb movements compared with anti-phase movements.  相似文献

We studied postural adjustments associated with a quick voluntary postural sway under two conditions, self-paced and simple reaction-time. Standing subjects were required to produce quick discrete shifts of the center of pressure (COP) forward. About 400-500 ms prior to the instructed COP shift, there were deviations of the COP in the opposite direction (backwards) accompanied by changes in the activation levels of several postural muscles. Under the reaction-time conditions, the timing of those early postural adjustments did not change (repeated measures MANOVA: p > 0.05) while its magnitude increased significantly (confirmed by repeated measures MANOVA: p < 0.05). These observations are opposite to those reported for anticipatory postural adjustments under simple reaction time conditions (a significant change in the timing without major changes in the magnitude). We conclude that there are two types of feed-forward postural adjustments. Early postural adjustments prepare the body for the planned action and/or expected perturbation. Some of these preparatory actions may be mechanically necessary. Later, anticipatory postural adjustments generate net forces and moments of force acting against those associated with the expected perturbation. Both types of adjustments fit well the referent configuration hypothesis, which offers a unified view on movement-posture control.  相似文献

To quantify limb dynamics, accurate estimates are needed of anthropometric inertia parameters (mass, center-of-mass location, and moments of inertia). These estimates, however, are not available for human infants; therefore, the movement dynamics of infants have not been studied extensively. Here, regression equations for the masses, center-of-mass locations, and transverse moments of inertia of upper and lower limb segments (upper arm, forearm, and hand; thigh, leg, and foot) of 0.04 to 1.50 yr old infants are provided. A mathematical model of the human body was used to determine the anthropometric inertia parameters for upper limbs in 44 infants and for lower limbs in 70 infants. Stepwise linear regressions were used to fit the distributions of the anthropometric inertia parameters. The regression equations accounted for significant amounts of the variance (64-98%), and the R2-values compared favorably when our equations were cross-validated. Consequently, these regression equations can provide, for infants of similar ages, reasonable estimates of upper and lower limb anthropometric inertia parameters, suitable for equations of motion in the analysis of limb dynamics in human infants.  相似文献

In electromyographic studies on healthy subjects, we recorded the H reflex from the right m. soleus and measured changes in the magnitude of this reflex response related to voluntary movements of the contralateral lower limb performed according to a visual signal. The effects of back and plantar flexions of the contralateral foot of the tested subject in the lying and standing positions were examined. Changes in the H reflex magnitude began to be recorded 60 to 90 msec prior to voluntary movements of the contralateral limb. When the subject was in the lying position, these changes looked like facilitation of the H reflex at both types of movement of the contralateral foot. When the subject stood, facilitation preceded back flexion of the foot of this extremity, while plantar flexion was preceded by inhibition of the tested H reflex. Our results show that the pattern of preliminary changes in the muscle tone of one of the lower limbs is determined by the type of future movement of another limb and peculiarities of the support function realized by this limb.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyze the change in antagonist co-activation ratio of upper-limb muscle pairs, during the reaching movement, of both ipsilesional and contralesional limbs of post-stroke subjects. Nine healthy and nine post-stroke subjects were instructed to reach and grasp a target, placed in the sagittal and scapular planes of movement. Surface EMG was recorded from postural control and movement related muscles. Reaching movement was divided in two sub-phases, according to proximal postural control versus movement control demands, during which antagonist co-activation ratios were calculated for the muscle pairs LD/PM, PD/AD, TRIlat/BB and TRIlat/BR. Post-stroke’s ipsilesional limb presented lower co-activation in muscles with an important role in postural control (LD/PM), comparing to the healthy subjects during the first sub-phase, when the movement was performed in the sagittal plane (p < 0.05). Conversely, the post-stroke’s contralesional limb showed in general an increased co-activation ratio in muscles related to movement control, comparing to the healthy subjects. Our findings demonstrate that, in post-stroke subjects, the reaching movement performed with the ipsilesional upper limb seems to show co-activation impairments in muscle pairs associated to postural control, whereas the contralesional upper limb seems to have signs of impairment of muscle pairs related to movement.  相似文献

Although the effect of temporal pressure on spatio-temporal aspects of motor coordination and posture is well established in young adults, there is a clear lack of data on elderly subjects. This work examined the aging-related effects of temporal pressure on movement synchronization and dynamic stability. Sixteen young and eleven elderly subjects performed series of simultaneous rapid leg flexions in an erect posture paired with ipsilateral index-finger extensions, minimizing the difference between heel and finger movement onsets. This task was repeated ten times under two temporal conditions (self-initiated [SI] vs. reaction-time [RT]). Results showed that, first, temporal pressure modified movement synchronization; the finger extension preceded swing heel-off in RT, and inversely in SI. Synchronization error and associated standard deviation were significantly greater in elderly than in young adults in SI only, i.e. in the condition where proprioception is thought to be crucial for temporal coordination. Secondly, both groups developed a significantly shorter mediolateral (ML) anticipatory postural adjustment duration in RT (high temporal pressure) than in SI. In both groups, this shortening was compensated by an increase in the anticipatory peak of centre-of-gravity (CoG) acceleration towards the stance-leg so that ML dynamic stability at foot-off, quantified with the “extrapolated centre-of-mass”, remained unchanged across temporal conditions. This increased CoG acceleration was associated with an increased anticipatory peak of ML centre-of-pressure shift towards the swing-leg in young adults only. This suggested that the ability to accelerate the CoG with the centre-of-pressure shift was degraded in elderly, probably due to weakness in the lower limb muscles. Dynamic stability at foot-off was also degraded in elderly, with a consequent increased risk of ML imbalance and falling. The present study provides new insights into the ability of elderly adults to deal with temporal pressure constraints in adapting whole-body coordination of postural and focal components of paired movement.  相似文献

Head movements induced by motor cortex stimulation in the cat are accompanied by variations in the vertical force exerted by each limb. These postural responses were found to show stereotyped patterns: with head dorsiflexions an increase was observed in the force exerted by the anterior limbs and a decrease at the posterior limb level. From comparison between the latencies of the force variations, the beginning of head acceleration, and EMG activity in the limb extensor muscles, it was concluded that triggering of these postural responses is not reflex, but depends on the same command as the movement itself. This early response might be a means of avoiding the downward movement of the trunk which would otherwise result from the reaction force corresponding to the upward head movement.  相似文献

This paper describes an efficient biomechanical model of the human lower limb with the aim of simulating a real human jump movement consisting of an upword propulsion, a flying and a landing phase. A multiphase optimal control technique is used to solve the muscle force sharing problem. To understand how intermuscular control coordinates limb muscle excitations, the human body is reduced to a single lower limb consisting of three rigid bodies. The biomechanical system is activated by nine muscle-tendon actuators representing the basic properties of muscles during force generation. For the calculation of the minimal muscle excitations of the jump movement, the trajectory of the hip joint is given as a rheonomic constraint and the contact forces (ground reaction forces) are determined by force plates. Based on the designed musculoskeletal model and on the differential equations of the multibody system, muscle excitations and muscle forces necessary for a vertical jump movement are calculated. The validity of the system is assessed comparing the calculated muscle excitations with the registered surface electromyogramm (EMG) of the muscles. The achieved results indicate a close relationship between the predicted and the measured parameters.  相似文献
