Quantifying eating behavior may give clues to both the physiological and behavioral mechanisms behind weight regulation. We analyzed year-long dietary records of 29 stable-weight subjects. The records showed wide daily variations of food intake. We computed the temporal autocorrelation and skewness of food intake mass, energy, carbohydrate, fat, and protein. We also computed the cross-correlation coefficient between intake mass and intake energy. The mass of the food intake exhibited long-term trends that were positively skewed, with wide variability among individuals. The average duration of the trends (P = 0.003) and the skewness (P = 0.006) of the food intake mass were significantly correlated with mean body mass index (BMI). We also found that the lower the correlation coefficient between the energy content and the mass of food intake, the higher the BMI. Our results imply that humans in neutral energy balance eating ad libitum exhibit a long-term positive bias in the food intake that operates partially through the mass of food eaten to defend against eating too little more vigorously than eating too much.  相似文献

Objective

Left ventricular wall stress has been investigated in a variety of populations, but the effect of food intake has not been evaluated. We assessed whether left ventricular wall stress is affected by food intake in healthy subjects.

Methods

Twenty-three healthy subjects aged 25.6?±?4.5 years were investigated. Meridional end-systolic wall stress (ESS) and circumferential end-systolic wall stress (cESS) were measured before, 30 minutes after, and 110 minutes after a standardised meal.

Results

Both ESS and cESS decreased significantly (P?<?0.001) from fasting values 30 minutes after the meal, and had not returned to baseline after 110 minutes. ESS decreased from 65?±?16 kdynes/cm2 (fasting) to 44?±?12 kdynes/cm2 30 minutes after, and to 58?±?13 kdynes/cm2 110 minutes after eating. cESS decreased from 98?±?24 kdynes/cm2 to 67?±?18 kdynes/cm2 30 minutes after, and to 87?±?19 kdynes/cm2 110 minutes after the meal.

Conclusion

This study shows that left ventricular wall stress is affected by food intake in healthy subjects.  相似文献

Oxidation of the branched-chain amino acid leucine was studied in 22 male Sprague-Dawley rats (70-90 g) over 3 days following the ingestion on Day 1 of a mixed diet containing a tracer dose (10 muCi) of L-[1-14C]Leu. One group (E) completed 1 hr exercise at 80% VO2 max immediately after a 2-hr feeding period on all 3 days, while a second group served as a control. Rats from group E were sacrificed immediately after the 2 hr feeding on Day 1, following exercise on Days 1 and 3, and at the end of Day 3. The following were determined: (1) continuous 14CO2 production, (2) radioactivity remaining in the gastrointestinal tract, and (3) distribution of free vs protein bound 14C in muscle and liver. The results indicated that (1) 14CO2 production increased during exercise on all 3 days (P less than 0.01), (2) 14CO2 production also increased (P less than 0.05) following food intake (unlabeled diet), (3) 14CO2 production due to exercise was greater than that due to food intake (P less than 0.05), (4) absolute 14CO2 production decreased dramatically by 15 hr of Day 1 (P less than 0.01) with little change thereafter (except with exercise and food intake on Days 2 and 3), (5) greater than 98% of the labeled diet was absorbed from the GIT 51 hr postingestion, and (6) 14C in the free pool of muscle and liver could account for less than 15% of the total 14CO2 production. These results suggest that protein bound 14C in addition to free 14C may be responsible for a significant proportion of the observed increased 14CO2 production during exercise.  相似文献

Background

Carotid plaque severity and morphology can affect cardiovascular prognosis. We evaluate both the importance of echographically assessed carotid artery plaque geometry and morphology as predictors of death in hospitalised cardiological patients.

Methods

541 hospitalised patients admitted in a cardiological division (age = 66 ± 11 years, 411 men), have been studied through ultrasound Duplex carotid scan and successively followed-up for a median of 34 months. Echo evaluation assessed plaque severity and morphology (presence of heterogeneity and profile).

Results

361 patients showed carotid stenosis (67% with <50% stenosis, 18% with 50–69% stenosis, 9% with >70% stenosis, 4% with near occlusion and 2% with total occlusion). During the follow-up period, there were 83 all-cause deaths (15% of the total population). Using Cox's proportional hazard model, age (RR 1.06, 95% CI 1.03–1.09, p = 0.000), ejection fraction > 50% (RR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.4–0.96, p = 0.03), treatment with statins (RR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.29–0.95, p = 0.34) and the presence of a heterogeneous plaque (RR 1.6; 95% CI, 1.2 to 2.14, p = 0.002) were independent predictors of death. Kaplan – Meier survival estimates have shown the best outcome in patients without plaque, intermediate in patients with homogeneous plaques and the worst outcome in patients with heterogeneous plaques (90% vs 79% vs 73%, p = 0.0001).

Conclusion

In hospitalised cardiological patients, carotid plaque presence and morphology assessed by ultrasound are independent predictors of death.  相似文献

1. Temperature of the scrotum or a similarly sized area of skin on the back of young pigs was changed by means of a thermal pad and food intake was measured. 2. Warming the scrotum to 42 degrees C significantly increased food intake in pigs reared and fed at 25 degrees C. 3. Cooling the scrotum to 20 degrees C, or changing the back skin temperature had no effect on food intake. 4. Acclimation to 10 degrees C, or exposure to 10 degrees C for 4 hr before a meal resulted in an increase in food intake. 5. Warming the scrotum did not affect this cold-induced increase in food intake. Warming the scrotum, but not the skin on the back, reversed the meal-induced increase in rectal temperature. 6. It is concluded that changes in food intake observed during warming the scrotum were not a direct result of the sensory information signalling increased skin temperature. 7. The likely mechanisms involved are the interactions of peripheral and deep body temperature, decreased deep body temperature and increased heat loss.  相似文献

The effect of two cholecystokinin (CCK) receptor antagonists (L-364718 and L-365260) and of diazepam on voluntary food intake in chicken was studied. L-365260 significantly increased cumulative food intake at 30 and 60 min, whereas L-364718 had no effect. Diazepam also increased food intake at 30 minutes. It was therefore concluded that anxiolytic effects could account for an increase in food intake in the conditions under which the study was carried out. Consequently, the effect of L-365260 could either be due to its anxiolytic properties or to its direct effects on food intake control.  相似文献

Objective: The influence of dairy product consumption on food intake and appetitive sensations was explored in a cross‐over design study with individuals who were habitually low (<1 serving/d) or high (>3 servings/d) dairy consumers. Research Methods and Procedures: Fifty‐eight participants were required to eat one portion of dairy each day (low dairy) or three portions of dairy each day (high dairy) for 7 days. After a 7‐day washout period, the opposite treatment condition was completed. Food intake and appetitive ratings were measured on each day of the treatment periods. Results: During the high‐dairy period, participants consumed 209 kcal/d more than during the low dairy period (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in subjective appetite ratings. Habitual dairy use did not influence either the appetitive or dietary findings. Discussion: These data indicate that increasing dairy consumption may lead to increased energy intake, which could potentially cause weight gain.  相似文献

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ), the endogenous ligand for the NOP opioid receptor, stimulates feeding in rats. The present study evaluated the effect of three newly synthesized NOP receptor agonists and two NOP receptor antagonist on food intake. Freely feeding rats were tested with intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of the NOP receptor agonists OS-500, OS-462 and OS-461. OS-500 and OS-462 evoked a hyperphagic effect more potent and far more pronounced than that of N/OFQ, while OS-461 was ineffective. OS-500 and OS-462 were also tested by intraperitoneal injection, but were unable to evoke hyperphagia following this route of administration. The NOP receptor antagonist NC-797 and UFP-101 did not modify feeding in freely feeding rats while fully antagonized the hyperphagic effect of N/OFQ. Pre-treatment with UFP-101 but not with NC-797 antagonized the hyperphagic effect of OS-462 and OS-500. The present findings indicate that OS-500, OS-462 may act as potent and long-lasting NOP receptor agonists, whereas UFP-101 and NC-797 show antagonistic properties. The higher efficacy of UFP-101 in blocking the hyperphagic effect of OS-462 and OS-500 may be linked to the better pharmacokinetic profile of this antagonist compared to NC-797. Overall, the results indicate that these compounds may represent valuable pharmacological tools to investigate the role of the brain N/OFQ system.  相似文献

The effects of carbohydrate and fat intake on exercise-induced fatigue was investigated in 30 untrained--(VO2max of 40.6 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) and 24 trained-subjects (VO2max of 52.3 +/- 2.7 ml X kg-1 X min-1) performing a 34 km march with a 25 kg backpack. Marching time was 8 1/2 h and 6 1/3 h in the untrained and trained-subjects respectively. The subjects were divided into 3 dietary groups. One group had free access to sugar cubes, the second group was offered almonds and the third one served as a control. Triglyceride levels decreased by 65 mg X dl-1 in untrained, and by 115 mg X dl-1 in trained subjects, while blood glucose remained at normal levels. In the untrained subjects, ingestion of almonds delayed the subjective sensation of exhaustion, while 50% of the controls and the sugar consuming subjects complained of exhaustion. The data suggest that ingestion of food containing fat delays exercise induced exhaustion or fatigue to a greater extent than does carbohydrate ingestion.  相似文献

A role for beta-EP in the regulation of food intake has been suggested as a contributory factor in the obesity of some genetically obese animal models. Studies undertaken to determine whether continuous administration of beta-EP could alter food intake in normal rats are described. The present studies demonstrated that continuous subcutaneous infusion with beta-EP was ineffective in modulating food intake, but that acute intraperitoneal or intracerebroventricular administration stimulated food intake in previously food deprived or satiated animals, respectively. These results suggest that beta-EP is not involved in the long-term regulation of food intake, but under certain conditions it may play some role in the regulation of individual meals. It is speculated that the latter activity may result from the action of other appetitive regulatory hormones.  相似文献

The effects of glucoprivation on the food intake have been determined in infant rats up to weaning. It was found that insulin reduced the milk intake of 9, 13 and 17-day-old males and females for three hours after treatment. In 24-day-old pups food intake increased for three hours after insulin administration, and decreased during the next 21-hour period. 2-deoxy-D-glucose increased the food intake in 28-day-old rat pups only. It was concluded that the inability of rat pups to correct glucoprivation by a subsequent increase of food intake is a consequence of the inadequate development of hypothalamic regulatory mechanisms. Glucoprivation stimuli are ineffective inducers of short-term hyperphagia of rat pups until the age of 24-28 days.  相似文献

The results of controlled experiments have demonstrated unequivocally that host food intake is often altered during the course of infections with eukaryotic parasites. Generally, host food intake is reduced depending on either the infective dose given to the host or the number of established parasites present. The onset in the reduction of host food intake varies according to the species of parasite involved and may be related to a particular developmental stage or event during the course of the host-parasite relationship. Some of the many sensory, neural, and hormonal factors that are now considered to modulate food intake in healthy animals are known to be affected during certain host-parasite relationships, and it is tentatively suggested that these physiological perturbations may initiate the observed changes in host food intake. Not unexpectedly, human appetite for food and food intake have been reported to become depressed during parasitic infections.  相似文献
