A series of investigations was carried out at ICARDA during April-June 2004 and May-June 2005 to investigate the use of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana to control Eurygaster integriceps and to determine aspects of the insect's biology that could be relevant to control with the fungus. Application in 2004 of an oil-based formulation of B. bassiana showed distribution of the spray decreasing from the top of the wheat to the bottom, although the proportion of tillers with coverage at the base was still 80%. Seventy percent of Sunn Pest had received direct hits, with the highest amount on the dorsal surface, followed by the ventral surface, then the legs and antennae. Mortality of field-treated, then laboratory-maintained insects, ranged from 47.6% for insects exposed only to the B. bassiana spray, 74.2% for unsprayed insects exposed to treated wheat and 86.4% for insects receiving direct spray and being exposed to treated wheat. Some field results demonstrated mortality. Mortality assessments following the 2005 treatments were conducted solely in the field, there was no apparent effect upon Sunn Pest numbers. The majority of studies on Sunn Pest biology were carried out on untreated insects outside the trial plots. Different assessment methods resulted in varying estimates of adults and juveniles in the field. The numbers of Sunn Pest found and the proportion of these at the top of the wheat crop, declined after early morning and increased again in the early evening, suggesting sheltering deeper in the crop or in the soil during the middle part of the day. Mobility and location of marked insects was followed in micro-plots and by mark and recapture studies, demonstrating a range of activities, from movement around the crop for a number of metres, including contact with numerous tillers to almost total immobility; Sunn Pest generally avoided movement on the soil. The potential for Sunn Pest control with a mycoinsecticide and how Sunn Pest behaviour is relevant to a mycoinsecticide application are discussed.  相似文献

The recommended dose for many pesticides is expressed as a constant mass or volume per unit ground area covered by the crop. This method of dose expression is well suited to boom spraying where a reasonably uniform horizontal distribution of deposit can be achieved with a well‐adjusted sprayer. However, in many practical situations (e.g. broadcast spraying of apple trees or other row structures where the spray application is made from within the canopy) the horizontal deposit distribution is strongly influenced by the crop area density and other crop structural parameters. This paper describes a generic method of pesticide dose expression to investigate these effects. The method incorporates a model of the spray volume deposition process. The model assumes that the pesticide deposit is proportional to the tank‐mix concentration of pesticide. The model also assumes that spray volume deposit is proportional to the applied spray volume per unit row length and is inversely proportional to a crop length scaling function L (i.e. a parameter with the units of length that is expressed as a generic function of different crop parameters). The useful working range of this model is bounded by the condition for high spray volume where target losses become significant due to saturation and the condition for very low volume where evaporative transport losses become significant. Within this framework, four different models are formulated using first‐order approximations for the length‐scale as functions of the following crop parameters: tree row spacing, tree row height, tree area density and tree row volume to ground area ratio. Published measurements of crop structure and spray volume deposit on apple trees are compared with the output from these models. Light detection and range (LIDAR) measurements of apple orchards are presented and used in conjunction with the different models to predict pesticide use associated with different methods of dose expression. The results demonstrate the relative potential for varying the pesticide application rate according to the different crop parameters. The results enable the identification of reference orchards that could be used to establish worst‐case pesticide application rates for registration purposes. The results also enable the identification of other orchards and growth stages where pesticide application rate might be reduced by up to a factor of five and give the same pesticide deposit as the reference structure.  相似文献

Entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) occurrence in soil from natural areas and crop field edges from La Rioja (northern Spain) was compared using two insects as baits: Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Both insects trapped Steinernema feltiae, S. kraussei and S. carpocapsae, with G. mellonella being more efficient than S. littoralis recording 5.4 and 2.6% of positive soil samples, respectively. EPN recovery frequency and abundance obtained with G. mellonella were not statistically different between natural and crop field edges values; however, S. littoralis was more successful trapping EPNs from crop field edges. Statistical differences were observed for recovery frequency recorded by both hosts in natural areas. Significant differences in larval mortality between both insects were not observed. The use of S. littoralis in entomopathogenic nematode surveys is discussed.  相似文献

The spring dispersal ofSitona lineatus L. (Coleoptera; Curculionidae) was investigated on a Danish farm.S. lineatus dispersed by flight in the early spring on sunny, calm days with temperatures above ca. 15°C. Two thirds of the population ofS. lineatus dispersed from perennial leguminous crops (clover and lucerne) in the first period of flight activity. The next dispersal did not occur until one month later despite several intermediate flight activity periods. The first period of dispersal occurred before the germination of the spring sown summer host crop,Vicia faba L. The field bean crop was infested in three later invasions during a period of more than three weeks. The aggregation pheromone, 4-methyl-3,5-heptanedione, had a significant effect on captures of both males and females in cone traps placed on the ground. There was no effect of the pheromone on captures in yellow sticky traps placed 1.5 m above ground. The pheromone effect is discussed in relation to behavioural observations. Both types of traps may be used in a survey system for monitoring spring dispersal ofS. lineatus and optimal timing of insecticide spraying. However, the pheromone cone traps were highly specific whereas all kinds of flying insects were caught in the yellow sticky traps, thus making the latter traps less suitable for monitoring.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen transfer from a desert stream to riparian predators   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Adult aquatic insects emerging from streams may be a significant source of energy for terrestrial predators inhabiting riparian zones. In this study, we use natural abundance delta(13)C and delta(15)N values and an isotopic (15)N tracer addition to quantify the flow of carbon and nitrogen from aquatic to terrestrial food webs via emerging aquatic insects. We continuously dripped labeled (15)N-NH(4) for 6 weeks into Sycamore Creek, a Sonoran desert stream in the Tonto National Forest (central Arizona) and traced the flow of tracer (15)N from the stream into spiders living in the riparian zone. After correcting for natural abundance delta(15)N, we used isotopic mixing models to calculate the proportion of (15)N from emerging aquatic insects incorporated into spider biomass. Natural abundance delta(13)C values indicate that orb-web weaving spiders inhabiting riparian vegetation along the stream channel obtain almost 100% of their carbon from instream sources, whereas ground-dwelling hunting spiders obtain on average 68% of their carbon from instream sources. During the 6-week period of the (15)N tracer addition, orb-web weaving spiders obtained on average 39% of their nitrogen from emerging aquatic insects, whereas spider species hunting on the ground obtained on average 25% of their nitrogen from emerging aquatic insects. To determine if stream subsidies might be influencing the spatial distribution of terrestrial predators, we measured the biomass, abundance and diversity of spiders along a gradient from the active stream channel to a distance of 50 m into the upland using pitfall traps and timed sweep net samples. Spider abundance, biomass and richness were highest within the active stream channel but decreased more than three-fold 25 m from the wetted stream margin. Changes in structural complexity of vegetation, ground cover or terrestrial prey abundance could not account for patterns in spider distributions, however nutrient and energy subsidies from the stream could explain elevated spider numbers and richness within the active stream channel and riparian zone of Sycamore Creek.  相似文献

Pregnant Syrian hamsters were placed in a 100-1 static inhalation chamber for 30 min twice daily on days 5-10 of gestation and exposed to 8.0 +/- 0.13, 11.6 +/- 0.11,or 13.23 +/- 0.49 g of "Foil Art Adhesive" and killed on day 14. Controls were placed in adjacent identical chambers but received no spray. The spray adhesive was toxic but not teratogenic at the doses administered. Maternal alopecia occurred upon exposure to the 2 highest dose levels, and 1 female died during exposure to the highest dose level. Fetal survival was not affected. Mean fetal weight was significantly decreased after exposure to all 3 dose levels, and delayed skeletal development occurred but was not dose related.  相似文献

1. Relatively few studies of the host‐finding ability of specialised, phytophagous insects involve direct observations of individual insects moving among intact hosts and non‐hosts. Information from such studies can inform the design of restoration programmes for species of conservation concern. 2. The movement of caterpillars of the threatened Oregon silverspot butterfly, Speyeria zerene hippolyta (Edwards) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) was studied in the field in cleared arenas with 10 cm radii. Caterpillars were placed in the centre, surrounded by three individuals of their host, Viola adunca, and three different non‐host individuals, separated by bare ground. In a second experiment, second instars were placed between a host and a non‐host, 3–6 cm away. Caterpillars were observed to determine if they walked to their host more often than expected by chance. 3. Caterpillars walked to vegetation significantly more often than expected by chance. They did not, however, reach their hosts more often than expected, based on plant availability. 4. It is concluded that S. z. hippolyta caterpillars can distinguish vegetation from bare ground from 10 cm away. There is no evidence that they can distinguish their host plant from other herbaceous species at distances of 3 cm.  相似文献

Flemish greenhouse growers predominantly use handheld spray guns and spray lances for their crop protection purposes although these techniques are known for their heavy workload and their high operator exposure risks. Moreover, when these techniques are compared with spray boom equipment, they are often found to be less effective. On the other hand, handheld spraying techniques are less expensive and more flexible to use. Additionally, many Flemish growers are convinced that a high spray volume and spray pressure is needed to assure a good plant protection. The aim of this work was to evaluate and compare the spray deposition, penetration and uniformity between a manually pulled horizontal spray boom and a spray gun under controlled laboratory conditions. In total, six different spray application techniques were evaluated. In general, the total deposition results were comparable between the spray boom and the spray gun applications but the boom applications resulted in a more uniform spray distribution over the crop. On a plant level, the spray distribution was not uniform for the different techniques with highest deposits on the upper side of the top leaves. Using spray guns at a higher spray pressure did not improve spray penetration and deposition on the bottom side of the leaves. From the different nozzle types, the XR 80 03 gave the best results. Plant density clearly affected crop penetration and deposition on the bottom side of the leaves.  相似文献

Deposition velocities, vg, to horizontal slides were measured over a barley crop for a range of air spora. Slides were either freely exposed, placed on a 60 cm2 table or placed in a large beaker. Deposition velocities calculated from the spore catch on freely exposed slides were 2–3 times the sedimentation velocity for all spore classes. While exposure of slides in protected enclosure reduced turbulent deposition, the values of vg were still almost twice the sedimentation velocity. Thus caution must be advised when interpreting such deposition measurements in terms of spore concentration.  相似文献

The risk and effect of the insecticide deltamethrin, applied aerially in Botswana to control and eradicate tsetse fly, was studied on the non-target weevil Cyrtobagous salviniae, a biocontrol agent of the aquatic weed Salvinia molesta. Environmentally-simulated short-term toxicity bioassay used open iron cages and closed plastic basins containing weevils and salvinia placed in riverine water bodies, where they were exposed to the aerial applications of deltamethrin over the Kwando–Linyanti system in 2006. Control samples were placed 40 km outside the sprayed area. Weevil mortality, determined at 12, 36 and 60 hours after the aerial application, reached a maximum of 27%. No significant difference in mortalities was observed between the closed basins and the open cages. The amount of deltamethrin deposited at ground level was between 1.2 and 6.4 μg m?2  and the insecticide toxicity was related to the weevil mortality. Simultaneous field monitoring through five spray applications showed that weevil abundance declined in late winter. Deltamethrin had a negligible impact on the weevil's ability to control salvinia under field conditions, probably due to the weevils’ protective mechanism and because vegetation could act as a barrier, preventing the insecticide from reaching the weevils. Minimum impacts of deltamethrin on the weevils in the present study and their recovery in the field are consistent with those of earlier spray applications in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.  相似文献

Low temperature at stand establishment and high temperature at reproductive stage are involved in reduction of grain yield of spring maize. A field study was therefore conducted to evaluate different physiological strategies for improving performance of spring maize under temperature extremes. Seed priming and foliar spray with 3% moringa leaf extract (MLE) and 100 mg L-1 kinetin solution alone or in all possible combinations with each other at three growth stages (knee height, tasseling and grain filling stage) and hydropriming was compared with control. Seed priming plus foliar spray of MLE and kinetin significantly improved stand establishment especially under early sown crop as indicated by reduced mean emergence time (MET), improved emergence index (EI) and final emergence percentage (FEP). Similarly increased chlorophyll contents, crop growth rate, leaf area index, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, relative water content and decreased membrane permeability were recorded in both early and optimum sowing conditions in MLE priming plus foliar spray treatment. All these improvements were harvested in the form of increased yield and harvest index compared with control treatment. Overall crop sown at optimum time performed best but exogenous application of MLE through seed priming and foliar spray maximally improved the performance of early sown maize crop which is attributed more likely due to improved stand establishment, chlorophyll and phenolic contents, increased leaf area duration and grain filling period. It can be concluded that seed priming with MLE along with its foliar spray could increase production of maize under temperature extremes.  相似文献

 在亚热带常绿阔叶林自然林窗下,以大头茶幼苗为基株,分别以马尾松、川灰木和大头茶幼苗为邻体。研究不同邻体如何改变可利用资源,影响大头茶幼苗基株生长动态和形态、树冠结构和生物量效应,并探讨影响基株生长的邻体的主导因素。结果表明,不同邻体的生长和截光效应差异明显;基株生长特征与邻体的树高、叶生物量、总生物量和树冠距地表10cm处截光量相关极小,却与邻体树冠距地表30cm处截光量相关极大,故影响基株生长的邻体主导因素是遮挡基株树冠的邻体的可利用光资源;基株生长动态,如树高、叶数、叶面积和叶大小,树冠结构和生物量显著受到不同邻体的影响,并且基株树高及增长量、叶面积、冠幅和生物量均为大头茶单株(GNO)>大头茶+川灰木(GNS)>大头茶+马尾松(GNP)>大头茶+大头茶(GNG)。大头茶幼苗种内竞争明显强于种间竞争。  相似文献

Summary Monocerin is a benzopyran fungal toxin with broad activity on plants, fungi and insects. Its effect upon cell cycle progression has been analyzed in maize roots. Meristematic cells were synchronized by treatment with aphidicolin. Flow cytometric DNA analysis and mitotic indices indicated durations of 1.5 h, 5 h, 2 h and 1 h for respectively G1, S, G2 and M phases of the normal cell cycle at 25°C. Treatment of these synchronized meristems with 0.5 mM monocerin during release after an aphidicolin block produced a short delay in S phase and then a more important delay (about 2.5 h) in entry into mitosis. Treatments for similar durations (3 h) during progression through the cycle revealed two periods of action of monocerin. The first appears to be mid to late S and the second one G2, before the transition point between G2 and M. Understanding how plant species richness influences the diversity of herbivorous and predatory/parasitic arthropods is central to community ecology.We explore the effects of crop species richness on the diversity of pest insects and their natural enemies.Using data from a four-year experiment with five levels of crop species richness,we found that crop species richness significantly affected the pest species richness,but there were no significant effects on richness of the pests’natural enemies.In contrast,the species richness of pest insects significantly affected their natural enemies.These findings suggest a cascade effect where trophic interactions are strong between adjacent trophic levels,while the interactions between connected but nonadjacent trophic levels are weakened by the intermediate trophic level.High crop species richness resulted in a more stable arthropod community compared with communities in monoculture crops.Our results highlight the complicated cross-trophic interactions and the crucial role of crop diversity in the food webs of agro-ecosystems.  相似文献

The toxicity of the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin to a cereal aphid and a coccinellid beetle predator was assessed. Deltamethrin gave effective aphid control in winter wheat at dose-rates of 6.25, 3.13 and 1.56g a.i./ha. The direct exposure of adultCoccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to spray drops was estimated at a range of positions in a cereal crop canopy from volumetric analysis of fluorescent tracer deposits. These measurements were used to calculate exposure to deltamethrin at the three experimental dose-rates. Observations of coccinellid beetle distribution through a cereal crop canopy permitted a realistic range of direct contact doses tobe calculated and the toxic effects of these levels of exposure to be predicted from laboratory dose-response data. Estimated beetle mortalities from direct exposure were 19, 8 and 3% at the three experimental dose-rates.In situbioassays with adultC. septempunctata which exposed beetles continuously to deltamethrin residues on flag leaves, resulted in 100, 94 and 39% mortality respectively at these dose-rates during the 10 days after spray application. Additionalin situ bioassays exposed beetles to deltamethrin residues on flag leaves for 24 h and then transferred surviving beetles to the soil under the cereal crop canopy for a further 9 days. This resulted in 89, 69 and 29% beetle mortality respectively at the three dose-rates. Mortality predictions combining both direct contact and residual exposure were made for the three dose-rates.to determine the maximum impact of summer sprays of deltamethrin on adult coccinellid populations in cereals. These worst case predictions suggested that a reduction in dose-rate by as much as three quarters of the recommended application rate in UK cereals may be necessary to preserve approximately 60% of adultC. septempunctata in the crop over the 10 days after a deltamethrin spray application. The methodology described may be appropriate for estimating selective dose-rates for key enemies in a range of crops.  相似文献

Assays of five commercial insecticides applied as residual sprays at label rates to plywood indicated the most toxic insecticide overall for pteromalid parasitoids of house flies, Musca domestica L., was Atroban (permethrin), followed by Ciodrin (crotoxyphos), Rabon (tetrachlorvinphos), Ectrin (fenvalerate), and Cygon (dimethoate). Insecticide-susceptible house flies were susceptible to all five insecticides (mortality, 62-100%). Flies that were recently colonized from populations on dairy farms in New York were susceptible only to Rabon. Urolepis rufipes (Ashmead) was the most susceptible parasitoid species overall to these insecticides, followed by Muscidifurax raptor Girault & Sanders, Nasonia vitripennis Walker, Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae (Rondani), and Spalangia cameroni Perkins. Compared with susceptible flies, newly colonized flies showed moderate resistance to avermectin B1a (abamectin). Abamectin was more toxic to all of the parasitoids except N. vitripennis and S. cameroni than to newly colonized house flies when exposed for 90 min to plywood boards treated with 0.001-0.1% abamectin. Space sprays with Vapona (dichlorvos) killed all of the parasitoids and susceptible flies and 64% of the newly colonized flies when insects were placed directly in the path of the spray; mortality was substantially lower among flies and parasitoids protected under 5 cm of wheat straw. Space sprays with Pyrenone (pyrethrins) killed greater than 86% of all insects exposed to the spray path except for the newly colonized flies (1% mortality); mortality of insects protected under straw was low (less than 12%) except for S. cameroni (76%). Because responses of the five parasitoids to the different insecticides varied considerably, general conclusions about parasitoid susceptibility to active ingredients, insecticide class, or method of application were not possible.  相似文献

The plant Euphorbia cyparissias is commonly infected by rust fungi of the species complex Uromyces pisi. When infected, E. cyparissias is unable to flower, but instead is induced by the fungus to form pseudoflowers. Pseudoflowers are rosettes of yellow leaves upon which the fungus presents its gametes in a sweet-smelling fungal nectar. We hypothesized that the fungi, as they are heterothallic, are dependent on insect visitation to cross-fertilize their mating types. We confirmed that insects are required with an insect exclusion experiment. We further hypothesized that pseudoflowers of U. pisi interact with uninfected true host flowers through insects during their period of co-"flowering" in early spring. We conducted artificial array experiments in the field to test whether the two species share insects and whether they influenced each other's insect visitation. Insects moved between true flowers and pseudoflowers, but true flowers received more visits over all. Pseudoflowers and true flowers did not influence each other's visitation rates in mixtures. However, shorter visits were observed on pseudoflowers in mixtures than monocultures, suggesting that true flowers might be competitors for pseudoflowers. Further experiments are needed to determine whether the similarity of pseudoflowers to true flowers is adaptive.  相似文献

In two experiments, on Julia and Zephyr spring barley, evidence was obtained that the development of powdery mildew in sprayed plots depended very much on their proximity to unsprayed crop. The effective period of control achieved with one spray was greater where plots were well separated from unsprayed crop than where they were surrounded by or very close to unsprayed crop. There is probably a risk that small plot experiments may not only underestimate the potential effectiveness of fungicides in agricultural practice, but also give misleading information on optimal spray timing.  相似文献

景观格局变化是全球变化的一个重要内容。农田是由人类赖以生存所种植的人工栽培作物组成的生态系统。在该景观系统中,多种植物-害虫-天敌相互作用、相互制约,形成有机整体。研究农田景观格局对害虫和天敌种群动态影响,不仅在害虫生物防治的实践中有重要意义,而且对于揭示人类活动对生物多样性结构与功能的影响,阐明农田景观中生物多样性整合、维持机理有重大的理论意义。本文从农田景观格局的"质、量、形、度"4个方面,系统地论述了农田景观格局变化对害虫和天敌的作用,分析了农田景观的生物控制服务功能,指出了未来研究发展的方向。  相似文献
