Summary This study suggested that sexual selection is potentially an important factor in the maintenance of dioecy in the American holly, Ilex opaca (Aquifoliaceae). Sexual dimorphisms in flower production and phenology were highly significant in this understory tree. On average, individual males produced 7.4 times as many flowers as did female trees. Staminate flowers lasted only a single day, whereas pistillate flowers lasted 3–4 days, during which they showed no significant decline in their ability to produce fruit after pollination. Individual male trees opened their flower buds asynchronously during the season, maximizing the number of days they were in flower. Individual females opened their buds more synchronously, maximizing their floral display at one point in time. Females produced fruits in numbers that were somewhat less than proportional to their flower production. Fruit development was initiated from only 38.9% and 69.5% of pistillate flowers in 1987 and 1988, respectively. By the time of ripening, an average female had lost 62.3%, 24.3%, and 11.1% of its initial fruit crop in 1986, 1987, and 1988, respectively. The proportion of fruit lost in 1986 was independent of the number of fruit that initially began development. In 1988, artifically supplementing pollen to a large number of flowers failed to increase either fruit or seed production relative to control branches with unsupplemented flowers. This suggested that resource levels were likely more important than pollen availability in limiting female reproductive success. These observations on I. opaca were consistent with the expectations for a population in which male reproductive success continues to benefit from continued pollinator service and female reproductive success does not.  相似文献

In dioecious clonal plants, the reproductive effort required to set seeds will be responsible for the larger investment in sexual reproduction by females. If there will be a trade-off in resource allocation between sexual and clonal reproduction, this differential sexual reproduction will lead to sexual differentiation in the relative amount of clonal reproduction. To test this prediction, we studied differences between the sexes in their phenologies and investments in sexual and vegetative reproduction (clonal reproduction by means of bulbils) with respect to ramet size in a dioecious clonal plant, Dioscorea japonica Thunb. The period of bulbil production overlapped the period during which infructescences developed. Females flowered later, produced heavier inflorescences, and fewer flowers per inflorescence than did males. Regression analysis using the size of the individual plants demonstrated that large females made smaller investments in inflorescences and larger investments in sexual reproduction than did large males. In contrast, females invested fewer resources in vegetative reproduction than did males. However, the total investments in sexual and vegetative reproduction did not differ between the sexes. These results supported our hypothesis on the sexual differentiation in sexual and clonal reproduction.  相似文献

Summary We derived an index of reproductive effort (g reproductive tissue per g leaf) from data collected over two seasons on 28 males and 28 females of the dioecious shrub Oemleria cerasiformis. Males produced an average of three times as much flower and flower-stalk tissue as females, but because of their large fruits, females produced four times as much total reproductive biomass. Reproductive effort of both sexes was related to light. Fruit set in females (% carpels producing drupes) averaged 11.2% and was related to spring light levels. Male-biased sex ratios in this species may be related to the greater reproductive effort of females.  相似文献

The effect of different dates of germination on the timing of flowering and the final reproductive yield was examined in a short-day annual plant Xanthium canadense (cocklebur). Delays in germination of 30 and 60 days deferred flower initiation by 2 and 9 days, respectively. Although plants that germinated later were smaller because of the shorter growing period, the reproductive yields did not show as much reduction as the vegetative biomass. The reproductive effort (RE, defined as the ratio of final reproductive yield to the vegetative biomass at the end of the growing season) increased 1.5 and 2.5 times with delays in germination of 30 and 60 days, respectively. A simple model of plant growth was used to analyse the factors involved in the control of RE, which depends only on the dry mass productivity and its partitioning in the reproductive phase, and is independent of the productivity and partitioning in the vegetative phase. Since relative allocation of dry mass to the reproductive part in the reproductive phase was similar for plants with different germination dates, the different REs could be ascribed mainly to differences in productivity of the vegetative parts in the reproductive period. The dependence of RE on plant size is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Patterns of growth, reproduction, defense (leaf resin) and herbivory were compared between the sexes of the dioecious shrub Baccharis halimifolia (Compositae). Male plants possessed longer shoots and more tender leaves, grew faster, and flowered and senesced earlier than female plants. Levels of leaf nitrogen, water content, and acetone-soluble resin (shown to deter feeding by polyphagous insect herbivores) did not differ between male and female plants. When offered a choice between leaves from male and female plants, adults of two leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae), the monophagous Trirhabda bacharidis and the polyphagous Paria thoracica, both preferred to feed on male leaves. Similarly, the daily fecundity of older females of T. bacharidis was higher when they were fed leaves from male compared to female plants. However, adult survivorship and total fecundity of T. baccharidis did not differ between male and female leaf treatments. We attribute the feeding preference for and slight increase in fecundity on male plants to the tenderness of male leaves. Larvae of the fly Tephritis subpura (Tephritidae) fed exclusively in the sterile receptacle of male flower heads (85% infested), but the phenology was such that pollen production was not adversely affected. Larvae of two other flies Dasineura sp. and Contarinia sp. (Cecidomyiidae) occupied >95% of only female flower heads where they fed among and on the developing seeds. We conclude that foliage-feeding herbivores are unlikely candidates to explain the female-biased sex ratio (59% female) of B. halimifolia plants in the field, and that their preference for male plants is a result of plant characteristics (e.g. rapid growth) that have been selected by some other factor. However, our data on selective floral herbivory in B. halimifolia are in accord with the argument that dioecy reduces the inadvertent loss of flower parts of one sex when herbivores feed on flower parts of the opposite sex.  相似文献

Laminaria is the main seaweed species under commercial cultivation in China, which utilizes 80 x 109 artificially cultured seedlings each year. This paper reports the large-scale application of seedling production using vegetative gametophytes in Laminaria cultivation. Key techniques, such as the attachment of gametophytes to the collectors and tank culture of seedlings in the hatchery, are examined. The problems of detachment and irregular dispersion of seedlings were also investigated. An efficient and practical seedling production technology was developed, which consists of seeding gametophytes on collectors, control of seawater flow in tanks, washing of collectors and regulation of ambient light, seawater temperature and nutrition supplement. After 2 months of culture, seedlings grown on woven palm rope collectors 0.5 cm in diameter measured up to the national technical standard of China (i.e., > 20 individuals cm−1 at a length of > 1.5 cm, and > 100 individuals cm−1 at a length of 0.2 cm–1.5 cm, desolation rate < 1% and detachment rate < 5%). Compared with spore-derived seedlings, no significant differences in sporophyte recruitment and dispersion pattern were observed. Large-scale production of seedlings for commercial cultivation of 4,000 ha from 2001 to 2006 was conducted successfully.  相似文献

Summary Male and female flowers of the dioecious perennial herb Rubus chamaemorus L. are similar in general appearance. However, female flowers are somewhat smaller, do not produce any pollen, and contain very small amounts of nectar. Syrphids and bumblebees, which are important pollinators of R. chamaemorus, showed a strong preference for male flowers. Male flowers were also less often rejected by flower visitors than were female flowers, and two different groups of syrphid species stayed longer in male than in female flowers. These observations suggest that female flowers of R. chamaemorus attract pollinators by deceit.Hand-pollination experiments indicated that pollen availability limited seed production of R. chamaemorus in female dominated habitats but not in areas with an equal floral sex ratio. We suggest that the relative importance of factors limiting female reproductive success is not constant, but is influenced by the floral sex ratio of the population. This should apply also to other dioecious species that show variable sex ratios on either a local or regional scale.  相似文献

In Peruvian Amazonia pollination ecology of two palms, Chamaedorea pinnatifrons (Jacq.) Oerst. and Wendlandiella sp. was studied from October 1988 to January 1990. Both palms are dioecious understory species that form locally dense populations. In C. pinnatifrons both sexes flower synchronously during the dry season. Prior to anthesis, the pendulous male inflorescence is inhabited by numerous thrips (Thysanoptera) and Ptiliidae (Coleoptera). Staminate flowers open by a small basal slit between the petals. At anthesis pollen is shed and the movements of the insects inside the flowers trigger pollen release in small clouds. Thus, the powdery pollen becomes airborne and finally air currents act as a vector, carrying pollen to the inconspicuous female plants, which usually are not visited by insects. The term insect induced wind pollination is suggested for this pollination mode. Wendlandiella flowers during four months in the dry season. Male and female plants were not visited by insects. The dry condition of the pollen indicates that anemophily is the pollination mode in Wendlandiella. Fructification is rare but the plants show intense vegetative propagation. The significance of anemophily in the tropical lowland rain forest is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The dioecious winter ephemeral liverwort, Sphaerocarpos texanus disperses spore tetrads consisting of two males and two females. I examined the subsequent sex ratio of S. texanus at different stages in its life cycle to detect possible mechanisms affecting deviations from a 1:1 sex ratio and the effect of sex ratio on reproductive success. As S. texanus occurs in pure male, pure female and mixed sex clumps, I examined the proportions and sizes of these, the reproductive success of pure female and mixed sex clumps in the field and the sex ratio of germinating plants in a growth chamber. In both the field and the growth chamber the most abundant clump type was pure female followed by mixed sex and pure male clumps. These abundance patterns suggest that males have a lower survival rate than females before emergence and this lower survival rate continues through the gametophytic stage. This disadvantage may be due to the higher susceptibility of males to environmental conditions, to their competitive inferiority to females, and/or to differential resource allocation to the sexes within the spore tetrad. The female biased sex ratio at germination is consistent with predictions from sex ratio theory. Further my field data indicate that males may gain a survival benefit from growing in a mixed sex clump and both males and females benefit reproductively when they occur in mixed sex clumps.  相似文献

Background and AimsThe pacaya palm is a dioecious neotropical palm species that is exploited in Latin America for its male inflorescence, which is edible when immature. It is cultivated, in a non-intensive manner, in Guatemala, where a morphotype occurs that produces much larger, more highly branched inflorescences compared with wild palms. We sought to identify molecular factors underlying this phenotypic divergence, which is likely to be a product of domestication.MethodsWe performed RNA-seq-based studies on immature pacaya palm male inflorescences in order to identify genes that might be directly or indirectly affected in their expression in relation to domestication. We also measured the accumulation of a range of soluble sugar molecules to provide information on the biochemical status of the two different types of material.Key ResultsA total of 408 genes were found to display significantly different expression levels between the wild and cultivated morphotypes. Three different functional categories were found to be enriched in the gene set that was upregulated in the cultivated morphotype: redox balance; secondary metabolism; and transport. Several sugars were found to accumulate at higher levels in inflorescences of the cultivated morphotype, in particular myo-inositol, fructose and glucose.ConclusionsThe observed upregulation of redox-related genes in the cultivated morphotype is corroborated by the observation of higher myo-inositol accumulation, which has been shown to be associated with enhanced scavenging of reactive oxygen species in other plants and which may affect meristem activity.  相似文献

Summary Shoot development and damage by herbivores and pathogens to male, female and non-floral ramets of the dioecious, perennial herb Rubus chamaemorus were studied in the field during three consecutive years. Leaves on male ramets were usually consumed more by herbivores and attacked more by fungi than were leaves on female ramets. Male ramets unfolded their leaves later than did female ramets. In 1983, when the level of herbivory was comparatively high, ramets that were fully developed in early June were more damaged by herbivores than were ramets that unfolded their leaves later. Non-floral ramets usually showed intermediate levels of damage compared to male and female flowering ramets.Defoliation caused a greater increase in ramet mortality among females than among males in a field experiment. It is suggested that the different reproductive roles of males and females differently constrain the evolution of defense against herbivores and pathogens in dioecious plants. This may result in intersexual differences both in palatability to herbivores and susceptibility to pathogens.  相似文献

By applying hand pollination, we studied pollen limitation of seed set of female plants in four dioecious plant species with insect-pollination. The effect of hand pollination increased with distance to the nearest male plant. Distances at which seed set was 50% of its maximal value (after hand pollination) were: 2.3 m for Valeriana dioica, 5.3 m for Salix repens, 8.5 m for Asparagus officinale and 10.6 m for Bryonia dioica. We discuss to what extent the reduced seed set was caused by either fewer visits or by visits of a lower quality. We argue that quantifying distance-dependent seed set in dioecious plants may be a good way of studying effects of habitat fragmentation on the breakdown of mutualistic pollination systems.  相似文献

The proportion of dioecious species in the flora of the British Isles has been underestimated in the past, partly because the total number of native species was overestimated and partly because some dioecious species were omitted for various reasons. We estimate that, in a total native angiosperm flora of 1377 species and species-equivalents, 4.3% (59 species) are dioecious, a substantially higher percentage than the previous estimates of 2, 3.1 and 3%. If gymnosperms are included, 4.4% (61 of 1380 species of seed plant) are dioecious. A review of published work shows that few of these dioecious species have been well-studied, and that for some little or no information is available about their sex ratios and reproductive biology.  相似文献

Summary Baccharis halimifolia (Compositae) is a dioecious shrub which grows on the upland fringe of tidal marshes along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North America. We examined the responses of the two sexes to variation in nutrient and moisture availability plant density, and defoliation. By growing plants from seedlings to flowering adults under various combinations of soil type, fertilization rate and plant density, we were able to establish different rates of plant growth and mortality. Plants grown at high density and low nutrient and water supply grew the least, incurrent the most mortality and showed a male-biased sex ratio (73% male). At low density with abundant nutrients and water, plants grew more, survived well, flowered frequently, and were female-biased (75% female). Changes in sex ratio were probably the result of sex-related mortality rather than sexual lability of the seedlings. While changes in sex ratio occurred under experimental conditions in the green-house, no evidence for differences in habitat utilization between the sexes were found in the field and the sex ratio (59% female) did not vary across habitats. In the marsh habitats we sampled where water and nutrients were apparently available, there was no evidence for differential mortality between the sexes. When defoliated (75% of leaf tissue), both sexes showed similar reductions in reproductive effort (number of flower heads/shoot). Our results indicate that differences between the sexes of Baccharis in their response to environmental growing conditions is an important ecological factor associated with the separation of male and female function into separate individuals.  相似文献

Embryogenic cultures were initiated from undeveloped ovules of several polyembryonic Citrus species on a basal medium supplemented with either malt extract, 2,4-D alone, or 2,4-D in combination with BA or daminozide. Primary embryos of all responsive cultivars were harvested directly from ovule cultures; secondary embryo harvests were made from Handin orange ovule cultures and long-term embryogenic callus. Differences were observed among cultivars and treatments in percentage of responsive ovules and total number of embryos produced. The most effective treatment for embryo production varied among cultivars. Embryo germination and plant establishment frequencies were determined for this plant regeneration system. Differences among cultivars with respect to regenerate survival percentage were minimal. Plant regeneration via secondary or long-term callus-derived embryos was as efficient as from primary embryos. Critical factors influencing plant production and survival were the production of normal viable embryos, balanced germination, and successful acclimatization to the external environment.  相似文献

Information on intra-specific variation in pollinator-attracting floral traits provides clues to selective pressures imposed by pollinators. However, these traits also reflect constraints related to floral phenology or morphology. The specific weevil pollinator Derelomus chamaeropsis of the dioecious Mediterranean dwarf palm Chamaerops humilis is attracted by volatile compounds that leaves, and not flowers, release during anthesis. Production of these olfactory cues is thus probably not constrained by any other floral function. This provides the opportunity to study variation of a floral trait that is not produced by a floral organ. We studied volatile compounds emitted by leaves of 12 individual C. humilis over the whole flowering season. The quantity of volatile compounds emitted by leaves reached a maximum when plants required pollinator visits. The relationship between odour emission and floral phenology was slightly different between male and female plants, probably reflecting differences in the exact time at which females and males benefit from pollinator visitation. Male plants produced higher quantities of volatile compounds than females. Odour composition was highly variable among individuals but did not differ between male and female plants. In this system, female C. humilis are pollinated by deceit and pollinators should be selected to avoid visiting them. The absence of sexual difference in blend composition may thus prevent pollinators from discriminating between male and female plants. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Summary Patterns of resource allocation in the dioecious Rumex acetosa and R. acetosella were investigated. Males were found to allocate more to reproduction during flower production than females, whereas females invested considerably more in reproduction during seed production. Altogether, females allocated both a higher total amount and a higher proportion of energy to reproduction than did males. By regression analysis, the influence of plant size on reproductive effort was examined separately for males and females. The results indicated that while reproductive effort is sometimes lower for tall plants than for small plants, size-independent effects have a greater influence on reproductive effort than size distribution. An analysis of variance was conducted to investigate the effects of population, season, sex and their interactions on plant size, and an analysis of covariance was used to study differences in resource allocation patterns. Different interaction effects were found to be most important in the two species of Rumex.  相似文献

Several Australian Acacia species have become highly invasive in a number of ecologically sensitive areas of South Africa. Many have useful attributes that, to an extent, have hampered biocontrol efforts by restricting potential agents to those reducing seed production whilst not affecting vegetative growth. The outcome of the introduction of a seed-feeding weevil, Melanterius servulus, against Acacia cyclops in 1994, was assessed by investigating the plant’s reproductive phenology, as well as levels of damage caused by the beetles. The study provided essential information on host/agent interactions and, on the build up and spread of populations of the agent. Seed damage is commonly as high as 90% (exceptionally it reaches 100%), and dispersal rates of the beetles on average is almost 2 km per year. The consistently high levels of seed damage achieved hold promise for the future of the program, however, its ultimate success will be further enhanced through the integration of biological control with other manual clearing operations that are currently employed on a large scale in South Africa.  相似文献

Site factors have frequently been shown to affect survival, growth, and reproduction in plant populations. The source-sink concept proposed by Pulliam is one way of integrating this spatial demographic variation into population models. Source-sink models describe a population where propagules from “source” habitats sustain less productive “sink” areas. We adapted this concept to model the population dynamics of the understory palm Chamaedorea radicalis on two substrates, rock outcrops and forest floor. In our model, sources and sinks correspond to fine-scale demographic structure within the population, rather than spatially discrete subpopulations as described in the Pulliam model. We constructed a stage-structured population matrix model that integrates the site-specific demography of individuals across two habitats types that are linked by migration. We then parameterized this model with field data from C. radicalis. To address whether observed differences in palm demography between rock outcrops and the forest floor were due to natural variation between microsites or due to differences in browsing intensity from free range livestock, we parameterized separate models based on the substrate-specific demography of protected, non-browsed palms and of palms exposed to burro browse. Results showed that herbivory reduced survival and fecundity on the forest floor, which in the absence of seed migration resulted in a projected decline of forest floor palms (sinks). However with seed dispersal, palms persisted and total population growth (both substrates) was projected to be positive, indicating that seed dispersal from non-browsed palms on rock outcrops (sources) was sufficient to sustain C. radicalis on the forest floor.  相似文献
