The response of wheat crops to elevated CO2 (eCO2) was measured and modelled with the Australian Grains Free‐Air CO2 Enrichment experiment, located at Horsham, Australia. Treatments included CO2 by water, N and temperature. The location represents a semi‐arid environment with a seasonal VPD of around 0.5 kPa. Over 3 years, the observed mean biomass at anthesis and grain yield ranged from 4200 to 10 200 kg ha?1 and 1600 to 3900 kg ha?1, respectively, over various sowing times and irrigation regimes. The mean observed response to daytime eCO2 (from 365 to 550 μmol mol?1 CO2) was relatively consistent for biomass at stem elongation and at anthesis and LAI at anthesis and grain yield with 21%, 23%, 21% and 26%, respectively. Seasonal water use was decreased from 320 to 301 mm (P = 0.10) by eCO2, increasing water use efficiency for biomass and yield, 36% and 31%, respectively. The performance of six models (APSIM‐Wheat, APSIM‐Nwheat, CAT‐Wheat, CROPSYST, OLEARY‐CONNOR and SALUS) in simulating crop responses to eCO2 was similar and within or close to the experimental error for accumulated biomass, yield and water use response, despite some variations in early growth and LAI. The primary mechanism of biomass accumulation via radiation use efficiency (RUE) or transpiration efficiency (TE) was not critical to define the overall response to eCO2. However, under irrigation, the effect of late sowing on response to eCO2 to biomass accumulation at DC65 was substantial in the observed data (~40%), but the simulated response was smaller, ranging from 17% to 28%. Simulated response from all six models under no water or nitrogen stress showed similar response to eCO2 under irrigation, but the differences compared to the dryland treatment were small. Further experimental work on the interactive effects of eCO2, water and temperature is required to resolve these model discrepancies.  相似文献

A key part of the uncertainty in terrestrial feedbacks on climate change is related to how and to what extent nitrogen (N) availability constrains the stimulation of terrestrial productivity by elevated CO2 (eCO2), and whether or not this constraint will become stronger over time. We explored the ecosystem‐scale relationship between responses of plant productivity and N acquisition to eCO2 in free‐air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiments in grassland, cropland and forest ecosystems and found that: (i) in all three ecosystem types, this relationship was positive, linear and strong (r2 = 0.68), but exhibited a negative intercept such that plant N acquisition was decreased by 10% when eCO2 caused neutral or modest changes in productivity. As the ecosystems were markedly N limited, plants with minimal productivity responses to eCO2 likely acquired less N than ambient CO2‐grown counterparts because access was decreased, and not because demand was lower. (ii) Plant N concentration was lower under eCO2, and this decrease was independent of the presence or magnitude of eCO2‐induced productivity enhancement, refuting the long‐held hypothesis that this effect results from growth dilution. (iii) Effects of eCO2 on productivity and N acquisition did not diminish over time, while the typical eCO2‐induced decrease in plant N concentration did. Our results suggest that, at the decennial timescale covered by FACE studies, N limitation of eCO2‐induced terrestrial productivity enhancement is associated with negative effects of eCO2 on plant N acquisition rather than with growth dilution of plant N or processes leading to progressive N limitation.  相似文献

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (ab. CO2) and fertilizer‐nitrogen (ab. N) applications may have marked direct effects on the plant growth of agricultural crops, and in turn affect the higher trophic level of insect herbivores. In this study, the effects of elevated CO2 (i.e., 650 µl/L vs. ambient 400 µl/L) and fertilizer‐N (0, 50, 100, 200 kg/ha) on the population abundances and the inter‐specific competition among three co‐occurring species of wheat aphids, Sitobion avenae, Rhopalosiphum padi and Schizaphis graminum, were studied. The grain weight per ear and the 1,000‐grain weight were generally increased when grown under elevated CO2 and showed a significant effect at the 100 kg/ha (grain weight per ear) and 0, 50 and 100 kg/ha (1,000‐grain weight) N. These two yield indexes increased with increasing fertilizer‐N levels within reasonable limits and reached a maximum at 100 kg/ha. Elevated CO2 combined with fertilizer‐N levels formed complex indirect effects on the three wheat aphids through the wheat crops they fed on. Elevated CO2 significantly decreased the niche overlap index (ab. NOI) between S. avenae and R. padi under 0 and 100 kg/ha and that between R. padi and S. graminum under 0 kg/ha, while significantly increased the three NOIs under 50 kg/ha and that between R. padi and S. graminum under 100 and 200 kg/ha. S. avenae and R. padi had the larger population and stronger competition in low‐N condition (0 and 50 kg/ha), which was harmful to wheat yield and quality when combined with its own poor nutrition. Overall, the 100 kg/ha N level was the best option based on the aphid population, competition and wheat yields. Therefore, the balanced relationship formed among fertilizers, plants and insects under 100 kg/ha N was vital for the interactive ecosystem.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect on soil CO2 efflux (FCO2) of sudden changes in photosynthetic rates by altering CO2 concentration in plots subjected to +200 ppmv for 15 years. Five‐day intervals of exposure to elevated CO2 (eCO2) ranging 1.0–1.8 times ambient did not affect FCO2. FCO2 did not decrease until 4 months after termination of the long‐term eCO2 treatment, longer than the 10 days observed for decrease of FCO2 after experimental blocking of C flow to belowground, but shorter than the ~13 months it took for increase of FCO2 following the initiation of eCO2. The reduction of FCO2 upon termination of enrichment (~35%) cannot be explained by the reduction of leaf area (~15%) and associated carbohydrate production and allocation, suggesting a disproportionate contraction of the belowground ecosystem components; this was consistent with the reductions in base respiration and FCO2‐temperature sensitivity. These asymmetric responses pose a tractable challenge to process‐based models attempting to isolate the effect of individual processes on FCO2.  相似文献

Background &; aims

Elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) can affect soil-plant systems via stimulating plant growth, rhizosphere activity and the decomposition of added (crop residues) or existing (priming) soil organic carbon (C). Increases in C inputs via root exudation, rhizodeposition and root turnover are likely to alter the decomposition of crop residues but will ultimately depend on the N content of the residues and the soil.

Methods

Two soil column experiments were conducted under ambient CO2 (aCO2, 390 ppm) and eCO2 (700 ppm) in a glasshouse using dual-labelled (13C/15N) residues of wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Yitpi) and field pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. PBA Twilight). The effects of eCO2 and soil N status on wheat rhizosphere activity and residue decomposition and also N recovery from crop residues with different N status (C/N ratio 19.4–115.4) by different plant treatments (wheat, wheat + 25 mg N kg?1 and field pea).

Results

Total belowground CO2 efflux was enhanced under eCO2 despite no increases in root biomass. Plants decreased residue decomposition, indicating a negative rhizosphere effect. For wheat, eCO2 reduced the negative rhizosphere effect, resulting in greater rates of decomposition and recovery of N from field pea residues, but only when N fertiliser was added. For field pea, eCO2 enhanced the negative rhizosphere effect resulting in lower decomposition rates and N recovery from field pea residue.

Conclusions

The effect of eCO2 on N utilisation varied with the type of residue, enhancing N utilisation of wheat but repressing that of field pea residues, which in turn could alter the amount of N supplied to subsequent crops. Furthermore, reduced decomposition of residues under eCO2 may slow the formation of new soil C and have implications for long-term soil fertility.

The effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2) on the relative uptake of inorganic and organic nitrogen (N) are unclear. The uptake of different N sources by pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) seedlings supplied with a mixture of nitrate, glycine and ammonium was studied using 15N‐labelling under ambient CO2 (aCO2) (350 ppm) or eCO2 (650 ppm) conditions. 15N‐labelled short‐term uptake and 15N‐gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) were applied to measure the effects of eCO2 on glycine uptake and metabolism. Elevated CO2 increased the shoot biomass by 36% over 15 days, but had little effect on root growth. Over the same period, the N concentrations of shoots and roots were decreased by 30 and 2%, respectively. Elevated CO2 enhanced the uptake and N contribution of glycine, which accounted for 38–44% and 21–40% of total N uptake in roots and shoots, respectively, while the uptake of nitrate and ammonium was reduced. The increased glycine uptake resulted from the enhanced active uptake and enhanced metabolism in the roots. We conclude that eCO2 may increase the uptake and contribution of organic N forms to total plant N nutrition. Our findings provide new insights into plant N regulation under eCO2 conditions.  相似文献

Increased biomass and yield of plants grown under elevated [CO2] often corresponds to decreased grain N concentration ([N]), diminishing nutritional quality of crops. Legumes through their symbiotic N2 fixation may be better able to maintain biomass [N] and grain [N] under elevated [CO2], provided N2 fixation is stimulated by elevated [CO2] in line with growth and yield. In Mediterranean‐type agroecosystems, N2 fixation may be impaired by drought, and it is unclear whether elevated [CO2] stimulation of N2 fixation can overcome this impact in dry years. To address this question, we grew lentil under two [CO2] (ambient ~400 ppm and elevated ~550 ppm) levels in a free‐air CO2 enrichment facility over two growing seasons sharply contrasting in rainfall. Elevated [CO2] stimulated N2 fixation through greater nodule number (+27%), mass (+18%), and specific fixation activity (+17%), and this stimulation was greater in the high than in the low rainfall/dry season. Elevated [CO2] depressed grain [N] (?4%) in the dry season. In contrast, grain [N] increased (+3%) in the high rainfall season under elevated [CO2], as a consequence of greater post‐flowering N2 fixation. Our results suggest that the benefit for N2 fixation from elevated [CO2] is high as long as there is enough soil water to continue N2 fixation during grain filling.  相似文献

Global environmental changes can have immediate impacts on plant growth, physiology, and phenology. Long-term effects that are only observable after one or more generations are also likely to occur. These transgenerational effects can result either from maternal environmental effects or from evolutionary responses to novel selection pressures and are important because they may alter the ultimate ecological impact of the environmental change. Here, we show that transgenerational effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and soil nitrogen (N) treatments influence the magnitude of plant growth responses to elevated CO2 (eCO2). We collected seeds from Lupinus perennis, Poa pratensis, and Schizachyrium scoparium populations that had experienced five growing seasons of ambient CO2 (aCO2) or eCO2 treatments and ambient or increased N deposition and planted these seeds into aCO2 or eCO2 environments. We found that the offspring eCO2 treatments stimulated immediate increases in L. perennis and P. pratensis growth and that the maternal CO2 environment influenced the magnitude of this growth response for L. perennis: biomass responses of offspring from the eCO2 maternal treatments were only 54% that of the offspring from the aCO2 maternal treatments. Similar trends were observed for P. pratensis and S. scoparium. We detected some evidence that long-term N treatments also altered growth responses to eCO2; offspring reared from seed from maternal N-addition treatments tended to show greater positive growth responses to eCO2 than offspring from ambient N maternal treatments. However, the effects of long-term N treatments on offspring survival showed the opposite pattern. Combined, our results suggest that transgenerational effects of eCO2 and N-addition may influence the growth stimulation effects of eCO2, potentially altering the long-term impacts of eCO2 on plant populations.  相似文献

The concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and tropospheric ozone (O3) have been rising due to human activities. However, little is known about how such increases influence soil microbial communities. We hypothesized that elevated CO2 (eCO2) and elevated O3 (eO3) would significantly affect the functional composition, structure and metabolic potential of soil microbial communities, and that various functional groups would respond to such atmospheric changes differentially. To test these hypotheses, we analyzed 96 soil samples from a soybean free-air CO2 enrichment (SoyFACE) experimental site using a comprehensive functional gene microarray (GeoChip 3.0). The results showed the overall functional composition and structure of soil microbial communities shifted under eCO2, eO3 or eCO2+eO3. Key functional genes involved in carbon fixation and degradation, nitrogen fixation, denitrification and methane metabolism were stimulated under eCO2, whereas those involved in N fixation, denitrification and N mineralization were suppressed under eO3, resulting in the fact that the abundance of some eO3-supressed genes was promoted to ambient, or eCO2-induced levels by the interaction of eCO2+eO3. Such effects appeared distinct for each treatment and significantly correlated with soil properties and soybean yield. Overall, our analysis suggests possible mechanisms of microbial responses to global atmospheric change factors through the stimulation of C and N cycling by eCO2, the inhibition of N functional processes by eO3 and the interaction by eCO2 and eO3. This study provides new insights into our understanding of microbial functional processes in response to global atmospheric change in soybean agro-ecosystems.  相似文献

Predicted increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) are widely anticipated to increase biomass accumulation by accelerating rates of photosynthesis in many plant taxa. Little, however, is known about how soil-borne plant antagonists might modify the effects of elevated CO2 (eCO2), with root-feeding insects being particularly understudied. Root damage by insects often reduces rates of photosynthesis by disrupting root function and imposing water deficits. These insects therefore have considerable potential for modifying plant responses to eCO2. We investigated how root damage by a soil-dwelling insect (Xylotrupes gideon australicus) modified the responses of Eucalyptus globulus to eCO2. eCO2 increased plant height when E. globulus were 14 weeks old and continued to do so at an accelerated rate compared to those grown at ambient CO2 (aCO2). Plants exposed to root-damaging insects showed a rapid decline in growth rates thereafter. In eCO2, shoot and root biomass increased by 46 and 35%, respectively, in insect-free plants but these effects were arrested when soil-dwelling insects were present so that plants were the same size as those grown at aCO2. Specific leaf mass increased by 29% under eCO2, but at eCO2 root damage caused it to decline by 16%, similar to values seen in plants at aCO2 without root damage. Leaf C:N ratio increased by >30% at eCO2 as a consequence of declining leaf N concentrations, but this change was also moderated by soil insects. Soil insects also reduced leaf water content by 9% at eCO2, which potentially arose through impaired water uptake by the roots. We hypothesise that this may have impaired photosynthetic activity to the extent that observed plant responses to eCO2 no longer occurred. In conclusion, soil-dwelling insects could modify plant responses to eCO2 predicted by climate change plant growth models.  相似文献

Plots containing Lolium perenne L., Trifolium repens L. or a mixture of both plant species were exposed to elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) for 10 consecutive seasons using free‐air CO2 enrichment technology at ETH Zürich, Switzerland. The CO2 treatment was crossed with a two‐level nitrogen (N) fertilization treatment. In the tenth year, soil samples were collected on three occasions through the growing season to assess the impact of eCO2 and N fertilization on mycorrhizal fungal abundance. Soil moisture content, which varied with harvest date, was linked to the vegetation type and was higher under eCO2. Root weight density was affected by vegetation type: lower for clover, higher for grass. Root weight density was stimulated by eCO2 and decreased by high N fertilization. The percent root length colonized by mycorrhizal fungi was lowest in the clover plots and highest in the grass plots. High N significantly decreased root length colonized. There was no overall effect of eCO2 on root length colonized; however, there was a significant eCO2× N interaction: eCO2 increased root length colonized at high N, but decreased root length colonized at low N. Extraradical mycorrhizal hyphal density was linked to soil moisture content. Extraradical mycorrhizal hyphal density was not affected by eCO2 or high N individually, but as for root length colonized, there was a significant eCO2× N interaction: eCO2 increased extraradical mycorrhizal hyphal density at low N but not at high N. These environmental effects on root colonization and external mycorrhizal hyphae were independent of soil moisture content and root weight density. This field study demonstrated a significant mediating effect of N fertilization on the response of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to eCO2 irrespective of any change in root biomass.  相似文献

To quantify stem respiration (RS) under elevated CO2 (eCO2), stem CO2 efflux (EA) and CO2 flux through the xylem (FT) should be accounted for, because part of respired CO2 is transported upwards with the sap solution. However, previous studies have used EA as a proxy of RS, which could lead to equivocal conclusions. Here, to test the effect of eCO2 on RS, both EA and FT were measured in a free‐air CO2 enrichment experiment located in a mature Eucalyptus native forest. Drought stress substantially reduced EA and RS, which were unaffected by eCO2, likely as a consequence of its neutral effect on stem growth in this phosphorus‐limited site. However, xylem CO2 concentration measured near the stem base was higher under eCO2, and decreased along the stem resulting in a negative contribution of FT to RS, whereas the contribution of FT to RS under ambient CO2 was positive. Negative FT indicates net efflux of CO2 respired below the monitored stem segment, likely coming from the roots. Our results highlight the role of nutrient availability on the dependency of RS on eCO2 and suggest stimulated root respiration under eCO2 that may shift vertical gradients in xylem [CO2] confounding the interpretation of EA measurements.  相似文献

The increasing [CO2] in the atmosphere increases crop productivity. However, grain quality of cereals and pulses are substantially decreased and consequently compromise human health. Meta‐analysis techniques were employed to investigate the effect of elevated [CO2] (e[CO2]) on protein, zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) concentrations of major food crops (542 experimental observations from 135 studies) including wheat, rice, soybean, field peas, and corn considering different levels of water and nitrogen (N). Each crop, except soybean, had decreased protein, Zn, and Fe concentrations when grown at e[CO2] concentration (≥550 μmol/mol) compared to ambient [CO2] (a[CO2]) concentration (≤380 μmol/mol). Grain protein, Zn, and Fe concentrations were reduced under e[CO2]; however, the responses of protein, Zn, and Fe concentrations to e[CO2] were modified by water stress and N. There was an increase in Fe concentration in soybean under medium N and wet conditions but nonsignificant. The reductions in protein concentrations for wheat and rice were ~5%–10%, and the reductions in Zn and Fe concentrations were ~3%–12%. For soybean, there was a small and nonsignificant increase of 0.37% in its protein concentration under medium N and dry water, while Zn and Fe concentrations were reduced by ~2%–5%. The protein concentration of field peas decreased by 1.7%, and the reductions in Zn and Fe concentrations were ~4%–10%. The reductions in protein, Zn, and Fe concentrations of corn were ~5%–10%. Bias in the dataset was assessed using a regression test and rank correlation. The analysis indicated that there are medium levels of bias within published meta‐analysis studies of crops responses to free‐air [CO2] enrichment (FACE). However, the integration of the influence of reporting bias did not affect the significance or the direction of the [CO2] effects.

The new species of cereal × Tritordeum Ascherson et Graebner (Hordeum chilense Roem. et Shultz × Triticum ssp.) has a grain protein concentration (GPC) of up to 25%. The relationship between GPC and yield, and the factors responsible for the high GPC of tritordeum were examined and compared in field experiments. Three experimental tritordeum lines, two early and a later released (recombined and secondary tritordeums) were compared to wheat (cv. Cajeme) and triticale cultivars (cv. Trujillo). GPC's were 19%–22% for recombined tritordeums, 16% for the secondary tritordeum, 12–15% for wheats and 11% for triticale. Grain yields of the recombined and secondary tridordeum were 17–33% and 45–57% that of the wheats and triticale, respectively. Reducing grain sink size by spikelet removal resulted in an increased GPC of remaining grains. Considering all species together there were a strong inverse relationship between GPC and grain yield (GY) per main ear (GPC=26–4.76 ln GY; r2=0.82). In another experiment, frost damage to an early sown treatment of wheat reduced sink size. Harvest index (HI) of early sown wheat was reduced from 0.45 to 0.19, values comparable to that of tritordeum. Having similar HI, the GPC of the early sown wheat was the same as an early sown tritordeum (around 18%). Data for total N uptake and the N concentration of plant tissue during the growing season indicated that enhanced N uptake and remobilisation were not responsible for tritordeum's high GPC. These results suggest that the high GPC of the early lines of tritordeum is a consequence of the small grain yield concentrating the grain protein.  相似文献

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Mercia) was grown in chambers under light and temperature conditions similar to the UK field environment for the 1990/1991 growing season at two levels each of atmospheric CO2 concentration (seasonal means: 361 and 692 μmol mol?1), temperature (tracking ambient and ambient +4°C) and nitrogen application (equivalent to 87 and 489 kg ha?1 total N applied). Total dry matter productivity through the season, the maximum number of shoots and final ear number were stimulated by CO2 enrichment at both levels of the temperature and N treatments. At high N, there was a CO2-induced stimulation of grain yield (+15%) similar to that for total crop dry mass (+12%), and there was no significant interaction with temperature. This contrasts with other studies, where positive interactions between the effects of increases in temperature and CO2 have been found. Temperature had a direct, negative effect on yield at both levels of the N and CO2 treatments. This could be explained by the temperature-dependent shortening of the phenological stages, and therefore, the time available for accumulating resources for grain formation. At high N, there was also a reduction in grain set at ambient +4°C temperature, but the overall negative effect of warmer temperature was greater on the number of grains (-37%) than on yield (-18%), due to a compensating increase in average grain mass. At low N, despite increasing total crop dry mass and the number of ears, elevated CO2 did not increase grain yield and caused a significant decrease under ambient temperature conditions. This can be explained in terms of a stimulation of early vegetative growth by CO2 enrichment leading to a reduction in the amount of N available later for the formation and filling of grain.  相似文献

Abstract

This work investigates the relationship between plant growth, grain yield, nutrient acquisition and partitioning in rice (Oryza sativa L.) under elevated CO2. Plants were grown hydroponically in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod at either 370 or 700 µmol CO2 mol?1 concentration. Plant dry mass (DM), grain yield and macro- and micronutrient concentrations of vegetative organs and grains were determined. Elevated CO2 increased biomass at tillering, and this was largely due to an increase in root mass by 160%. Elevated CO2 had no effect on total nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Mg and Ca). However, nutrient partitioning among organs was significantly altered. N partitioning to leaf blades was significantly decreased, whereas the N partitioning into the leaf sheaths and roots was increased. Nutrient use efficiency of N, P, K, and Mg in all organs was significantly increased at elevated CO2. At harvest maturity, grain yield was increased by 27% at elevated CO2 while grain (protein) concentration was decreased by a similar magnitude (28%), suggesting that critical nutrient requirements for rice might need to be reassessed with global climate change.  相似文献

Long-term responses of terrestrial ecosystems to the combined effects of warming and elevated CO2 (eCO2) will likely be regulated by N availability. The stock of soil N determines availability for organisms, but also influences loss to the atmosphere or groundwater. eCO2 and warming can elicit changes in soil N via direct effects on microbial and plant activity, or indirectly, via soil moisture. Detangling the interplay of direct- and moisture-mediated impacts on soil N and the role of organisms in controlling soil N will improve predictions of ecosystem-level responses. We followed individual soil N pools over two growing seasons in a semiarid temperate grassland, at the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment experiment. We evaluated relationships of N pools with environmental factors and explored the role of plants by assessing plant biomass, plant N, and plant inputs to soil. We also assessed N forms in plots with and without vegetation to remove plant-mediated effects. Our study demonstrated that the effects of warming and eCO2 are highly dependent on individual N form and on year. In this water-constrained grassland, eCO2, warming and their combination appear to impact soil N pools through a complex combination of direct- and moisture-mediated effects. eCO2 decreased NO3 ? but had neutral to positive effects on NH4 + and dissolved organic N (DON), particularly in a wet year. Warming increased NO3 ? availability due to a combination of indirect drying and direct temperature-driven effects. Warming also increased DON only in vegetated plots, suggesting plant mediation. Our results suggest that impacts of combined eCO2 and warming are not always equivalent for plant and soil pools; although warming can help offset the decrease in NO3 ? availability for plants under eCO2, the NO3 ? pool in soil is mainly driven by the negative effects of eCO2.  相似文献

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Triso) was grown in a free-air carbon dioxide (CO2) enrichment (FACE) system at Stuttgart–Hohenheim (Germany) in 2008 to examine effects on crop yield and grain quality. Elevated CO2 had no significant impacts on aboveground biomass and grain yield components except for an increase in thousand grain weight by 5.4% with size distribution shifted towards larger grains. Total grain protein concentration decreased by 7.9% under CO2 enrichment, and protein composition was altered. Total gliadins and their single types (ω5-gliadins, ω1,2-gliadins, α-gliadins, and γ-gliadins) were reduced, while albumins/globulins, total glutenins and their subunits were not influenced. The gluten proteins (gliadins plus glutenins) were lowered by 11.3% in the high-CO2 treatment, whereas proportions of gluten protein types were slightly affected as only ω1,2-gliadins decreased. Accordingly, all proteinogenic amino acids were decreased by 4.2 to 7.9% in concentrations per unit flour mass, although partly below the level of statistical significance. In contrast, the composition of amino acids on a per protein basis remained unaffected except for a decline in serine. Among the minerals, the concentrations of calcium, magnesium, iron and cobalt decreased, while an increase was observed for boron. The concentrations of total non-structural carbohydrates and starch decreased, whereas fructose, raffinose and fructan increased. Total lipid concentration remained unaffected by the CO2 enrichment, whereas the grain carbon/nitrogen relation was increased by 8.5%. Implications may occur for consumer nutrition and health, and for industrial processing, thus breeding of new wheat cultivars that exploit CO2 fertilisation and maintain grain quality properties is regarded as one potential option to assure the supply chain for the future.  相似文献
