In metapopulations, competitive interactions may extend beyond the confines of the local population such that members of neighbouring habitat patches affect each other adversely (quasi-local competition). We derive a model for quasi-local competition from first principles, assuming that individuals compete for shared resources and members of a population spend a certain fraction of their foraging time in the adjacent populations. Contrary to the results of Doebeli and Killingback [2003. Theor. Popul. Biol. 64, 397-416], our model does not produce spatial patterns of population densities in homogeneous environments. Quasi-local competition nevertheless contributes to pattern formation by amplifying the effect of heterogeneities in the external environment, and this amplification can be extremely strong when dispersal is absent. We discuss why apparently similar models lead to contrasting results.  相似文献

Demands for access to experimental therapies are frequently framed in the language of rights. This article examines the justifiability of such demands in the specific context of surgical innovations, these being promising but non‐validated and potentially risky departures from standard surgical practices. I argue that there is a right to access innovative surgery, drawing analogies with other generally accepted rights in medicine, such as the right not to be forcibly treated, to buy contraceptives, and to choose to have an abortion, including a post‐viability abortion where the mother's life or health is threatened by the pregnancy. I argue that we accept these rights because we believe that people are entitled to try to preserve their lives and health and to make choices of an important and intensely personal kind, and I suggest that a person's choice of medical treatment should be seen in the same light. However, since few rights are absolute, I also consider the circumstances in which it may be justifiable to limit the right to access innovative surgery. In discussing this question, I apply the human rights standard of proportionality, comparing the importance of the reasons for limiting the right with the severity of the invasion on liberty.  相似文献

Context-dependent nature of biological phenomena is well documented in every branch of biology. While there have been few previous attempts to (implicitly) model various (particular) facets of biological context-dependence, a formal and general mathematical construct to model the wide spectrum of context-dependence, eludes the students of biology. Such an objective model, from both ‘bottom-up’ as well as ‘top-down’ perspective, is proposed here to serve as the template to describe the various kinds of context-dependence that we encounter in different branches of biology. Interactions between biological contexts was found to be transitive but non-commutative. It is found that a hierarchical nature of dependence among the biological contexts models the emergent biological properties efficiently. Reasons for these findings are provided in a general model to describe biological reality. Scheme to algorithmically implement the hierarchic structure of organization of biological contexts was proposed with a construct named ‘Context tree’. A ‘Context tree’ based analysis of context interactions among biophysical factors influencing protein structure was performed.  相似文献

The present paper describes a global procedure for estimating all the synthesis parameters that generate a single fibre action potential (SFAP) in the Dimitrov–Dimitrova (D–D) convolutional model. We call this inverse problem Identification Procedure, and it is presented in two parts, this paper being the second. The procedure incorporates the candidate pair (CP) method developed in Part I, which provides the values of radial distance r and fibre diameter d of the simulated SFAP that best matches a potential under study. The CP-method required prior knowledge of all the excitation parameters. However, since the Identification Procedure makes no assumption about the excitation, multiple combinations of the synthesis parameters result in very similar SFAPs whose shape is close the signal under study. Analysis of the possible combinations reveals that r and d can be modelled as two jointly Gaussian random variables. The interest of the Identification Procedure is that, for a certain SFAP, it provides estimates of r and d, along with estimates of different parameters that determine the IAP waveform. Moreover, the procedure is able to determine the degree of error that accompanies the estimation of r and d.  相似文献

Discrete age-structured density-dependent one-population models and discrete age-structured density-dependent prey–predator models are considered. Regarding the former, we present formal proofs of the nature of bifurcations involved as well as presenting some new results about the dynamics in unstable and chaotic parameter regions. Regarding the latter, we show that increased predation may act both as a stabilizing and a destabilizing effect. Moreover, we find that possible periodic dynamics of low period, either exact or approximate, may not be generated by the predator, but it may be generated by the prey. Finally, what is most interesting from the biological point of view, is that given that the prey, in absence of the predator, exhibits periodic or almost periodic oscillations of low period, then the introduction of the predator does not alter this periodicity in any substantial way until the stabilizing effect of increased predation becomes so strong that a stable equilibrium is achieved. The mechanism of trisomy formation and its relationship to increased maternal age is not understood. Molecular analysis of the pattern of inheritance of DNA markers in trisomy families shows trisomies can be grouped according to whether the affected chromosomes inherited from their mothers are heterozygous or homozygous with respect to the centromeres. Furthermore, molecular analysis reveals that those that are heterozygous have fewer chiasmata, which are located more distally, while those that are homozygous have more chiasmata proximally located. Cytogenetic analysis of human oocytes shows that the kind of imbalance predicted by the classic hypothesis of nondisjunction, i.e. extra whole chromosomes at the second metaphase, is rarely found, whereas the common expression of imbalance is seen as single chromatids. We hypothesise that one mechanism links these data: the mechanism depends on the prediction from the cytogenetic data that cohesion within the bivalent complex is severely weakened during the extended dictyate stage in older women. Consequently, when meiosis resumes, at the time of ovulation, the bivalent emerges as four chromatids held together only by its chiasmata. In accordance with the rules of orientation on the spindle, the final balanced shape of the configuration achieved at metaphase I, in this case determined by the position of the chiasmata, will dictate whether the subsequent segregation of the chromatids will result in their heterozygosity or homozygosity. It follows that the concept of "first division" and "second division" errors, i.e. of nondisjunction originating at first or second meiotic division as defined by centromeric hetero- or homozygosity, may be erroneous.  相似文献

Background  

EpiFlex is a flexible, easy to use computer model for a single computer, intended to be operated by one user who need not be an expert. Its purpose is to study in-silico the epidemic behavior of a wide variety of diseases, both known and theoretical, by simulating their spread at the level of individuals contracting and infecting others. To understand the system fully, this paper must be read together in conjunction with study of the software and its results. EpiFlex is evaluated using results from modeling influenza A epidemics and comparing them with a variety of field data sources and other types of modeling.  相似文献

We consider a structured metapopulation model describing the dynamics of a single species, whose members are located in separate patches that are linked through migration according to a mean field rule. Our main aim is to find conditions under which its equilibrium distribution is reasonably approximated by that of the unstructured model of Levins (1969). We do this by showing that the (positive) equilibrium distribution converges, as the carrying capacity of each population goes to infinity together with appropriate scalings on the other parameters, to a bimodal distribution, consisting of a point mass at 0, together with a positive part which is closely approximated by a shifted Poisson centred near the carrying capacity. Under this limiting régime, we also give simpler approximate formulae for the equilibrium distribution. We conclude by showing how to compute persistence regions in parameter space for the exact model, and then illustrate all our results with numerical examples. Lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) are rapidly showing their ability to simulate a lot of fluid dynamics problems that previously required very complex approaches. This study presents a LBM for simulating diffusion–advection transport of substrate in a 2-D laminar flow. The model considers the substrate influx into a set of active cells placed inside the flow field. A new innovative method was used to simulate the cells activity using the LBM by means of Michaelis–Menten kinetics. The model is validated with some numerical benchmark problems and proved highly accurate results. After validation the model was used to simulate the transport of oxygen substrates that diffuse in water to feed a set of active cartilage cells inside a new designed bioreactor.  相似文献

There is no lack of pretext for reviewing historically how ecologists have striven to gain the respect of scholars in their own and other fields, and to demonstrate the wider public-utility of their science. If self-serving, in terms of securing the scope and resources required to advance their studies in ecology, such activities have also been encouraged, and indeed commissioned, in the belief that a greater awareness and understanding of the natural world is essential for human wellbeing. Programmed cell death (PCD) serves as a major mechanism for the precise regulation of cell numbers, and as a defense mechanism to remove unwanted and potentially dangerous cells. Despite the striking heterogeneity of cell death induction pathways, the execution of the death program is often associated with characteristic morphological and biochemical changes termed apoptosis. Although for a long time the absence of mitochondrial changes was considered as a hallmark of apoptosis, mitochondria appear today as the central executioner of programmed cell death. This crucial position of mitochondria in programmed cell death control is not due to a simple loss of function (deficit in energy supplying), but rather to an active process in the regulation of effector mechanisms.The large diversity of regulators of apoptosis in mammals and their numerous interactions complicate the analysis of their individual functions. Yeast, eukaryotic but unicellular organism, lack the main regulators of apoptosis (caspases, Bcl-2 family members, . . .) found in mammals. This absence render them a powerful tool for heterologous expression, functional studies, and even cloning of new regulators of apoptosis.Great advances have thus been made in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of Bcl-2 family members interactions with themselves and other cellular proteins, specially thanks to the two hybrid system and the easy manipulation of yeast (molecular biology and genetics).This review will focus on the use of yeast as a tool to identify new regulators and study function of mammalian apoptosis regulators.  相似文献

Parthenin — a sesquiterpene lactone fromParthenium hysterophorus L. is an allelochemical that prevents the germination ofPhaseolus aureus Roxb. cv. ML-5 seeds. The response of the seed has been attributed to the inhibition of the respiratory electron transport ability of its embryo. It has been shown to depend directly not only upon concentration of parthenin, but simultaneously on the duration of exposure of the seeds to the chemical as well. A strong correlation exists between the quantum of the response and the product of the period of exposure and the concentration of parthenin. In order to predict the maximum possible germination ability of the seed exposed for a given period to a given concentration of parthenin, an expression X = 10000 Y3 / [eY/0.31-1] was formulated from the equation X = AY3/[eY/Y0-1], where X represents values of maximum respiratory activity, Y represents the product of concentration and time in units mg cn-3 h, A represents a dimensional constant. The trend and nature of response that is calculated on the basis of formulation coincides with that of measured response through spectrophotometry.  相似文献

It is often said that an important consideration in judging whether an association between treatment and response is causal is the presence or absence of a dose-response relationship, that is, larger ostensible treatment effects when doses of treatment are larger. This criterion is widely discussed in textbooks and is often mentioned in empirical papers. At the same time, it is well known through both important examples and elementary theory that a treatment may cause dramatic effects with no dose-response relationship, and hidden biases may produce a dose-response relationship when the treatment is without effect. What does a dose-response relationship say about causality? It is observed here that a dose-response relationship may or may not reduce sensitivity to hidden bias, and whether it has or has not can be determined by a suitable analysis using the data at hand. Moreover, a study without a dose-response relationship may or may not be less sensitive to hidden bias than another study with such a relationship, and this, too, can be determined from the data at hand. An example concerning cytogenetic damage among professional painters is used to illustrate.  相似文献

For biofilm studies, artificial models can be very helpful in studying processes in hydrogels of defined composition and structure. Two different types of artificial biofilm models were developed. Homogeneous agarose beads (50–500 μm diameter) and porous beads (260 μm mean diameter) containing pores with diameters from 10 to 80 μm (28 μm on average) allowed the embedding of cells, particles and typical biofilm matrix components such as proteins and polysaccharides. The characterisation of the matrix structures and of the distribution of microorganisms was performed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The physiological condition of the embedded bacteria was examined by redox activity (CTC-assay) and membrane integrity (Molecular Probes LIVE/DEAD-Kit). Approximately 35% of the immobilised cells (Pseudomonas aeruginosa SG81) were damaged due to the elevated temperature required for the embedding process. It was shown that the surviving cells were able to multiply when provided with nutrients. In the case of homogeneous agarose beads, cell growth only occurred near the bead surface, while substrate limitation prevented growth of more deeply embedded cells. In the porous hydrogel, cell division was observed across the entire matrix due to better mass transport. It could be shown that embedding in the artificial gel matrix provided protection of immobilized cells against toxic substances such as sodium hypochlorite (0.5 mg/l, 30 min) in comparison to suspended cells, as observed in other immobilized systems. The mosquito is a very important vector involved in the worldwide transmission of disease-causing viruses and parasites. Controlling the mosquito population remains one of the best means for preventing the serious infectious diseases of malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis and so on and there has been an increasing interest in developing biopesticides as a useful substitute to chemical insecticides. As a result, Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) has been extensively used due to its specificity and high toxicity to a variety of mosquito larvae. However it is prudent to seek alternatives to Bti with alternative spectra of mosquitocidal activity or that are able to overcome any resistance that might develop against Bti. The Bt S2160-1 strain was isolated from soil samples collected from Southern China and found to have a comparable mosquitocidal activity to Bti. However there were significant differences in terms of their plasmid profiles, crystal proteins produced and cry gene complement. A PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism identification system was developed and used in order to identify novel cry-type genes and four such genes (cry30Ea, cry30Ga, cry50Ba and cry54Ba) were identified in Bt S2160-1. In conclusion, Bt S2160-1 has been identified as a potential alternative to Bti, which could be used for the control of mosquito populations in order to reduce the incidence of mosquito-borne diseases.  相似文献

As according to ancient Vedic rites, Indians perform ‘Hawan’ every day to purify the atmosphere. Laboratory tests were conducted by exposing petriplates containing czapek dox agar medium, in a closed room, before and after fumigating ‘Hawan samagree’ and plant parts (dried leaves, bark, sawdust) ofMangifera indica, Azadirachta indica andSantanum album. Results showed considerable decrease in concentration of fungal load. This method can be successfully implemented at actual work places like small flour mills, ginneries, cobbler shops etc., to curtail the concentration of lethal fungi likeAspergillus, Penicillium, Alternaria, Curvularia, Cladosporium etc.  相似文献
