Behavioural and physiological changes during the reproductive period were documented in male European ground squirrels including: initiated conflict, scent marking, locomotion and range size, as well as testis size, scrotal pigmentation, testosterone levels and changes in body mass. Spring emergence dates in adult males varied but preceded those of females. Gonadal maturation was complete in adult males at emergence. Most yearlings did not mature and emerged with females. After a quiescent premating phase, male range, range overlap, conflict rates and locomotion increased at female emergence. The synchrony of females, their small ranges and short latencies to ovulation produced a highly male-biased operational sex ratio (OSR) and potential for scramble competition polygyny. In contrast to other ground squirrel species, each female apparently mated with only a single male. Scramble competition did appear to occur, in that males tried to contact as many females as often as possible before copulation. Females placed high temporal prerequisites on males. Costs of scrambling were documented by body mass loss during mating, which covaried with the number of ‘acquired’ females. Testicular regression occurred earlier, and fattening, moult and onset of next hibernation were delayed in successful males. The determinant factor in these costs was found to be mass loss intensity during the main mating period. Surprisingly, this factor was best related to feeding changes and not to locomotion or aggression. Time budget constraints perhaps imposed by the female, with compounding influences of exercise and stress effects of conflict, then negatively affected ensuing seasonal activities. The individual changes may adversely affect individual survivability and/or future reproductive success.  相似文献

Estrous female domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) display scent marking (“chinning”) and sexual receptivity. Mating induces ovulation, which occurs approximately 12 h later, and also decreases chinning and receptivity. In the present study, we explored the participation of mating-associated stimuli, ovulation, and the progesterone receptor (PR) in mediating such behavioral effects. We found that copulatory stimuli were not necessary, and that ovulation alone was sufficient, as these behavioral changes were replicated in unmated females by intravenous administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The post-mating administration (s.c.) of 5 μg/day estradiol benzoate (EB), prevented the decline in chinning and receptivity. A lower dose of EB (1 μg/day) had no effect, nor did the antiprogestin RU486 (20 mg, s.c., administered 3 h before mating). However, the combination of a single pre-mating administration of RU486 plus the post-mating administration of 1 μg/day EB completely blocked the decline in estrous behavior. We propose that PR activation around the time of mating and a post-mating decline in ovarian estradiol secretion and/or estradiol responsiveness act in parallel to terminate estrus in this species.  相似文献

In primate species exhibiting seasonal reproduction, patterns of testosterone excretion in adult males are variable: in some species, peaks correlate with female receptivity periods and heightened male-male aggression over access to estrous females, in others, neither heightened aggression nor marked elevations in testosterone have been noted. In this study, we examined mean fecal testosterone ( f T) levels and intermale aggression in wild adult male ring-tailed lemurs residing in three groups at Beza Mahafaly Reserve, Madagascar. Results obtained from mating and post-mating season 2003 were compared to test Wingfield et al. [1990. Am Nat 136:829-846] "challenge hypothesis", which predicts a strong positive relationship between male testosterone levels and male-male competition for access to receptive females during breeding season. f T levels and rates of intermale aggression were significantly higher during mating season compared to the post-mating period. Mean f T levels and aggression rates were also higher in the first half of the mating season compared with the second half. Number of males in a group affected rates of intermale agonism, but not mean f T levels. The highest-ranking males in two of the groups exhibited higher mean f T levels than did lower-ranking males, and young males exhibited lower f T levels compared to prime-aged and old males. In the post-mating period, mean male f T levels did not differ between groups, nor were there rank or age effects. Thus, although male testosterone levels rose in relation to mating and heightened male-male aggression, f T levels fell to baseline breeding levels shortly after the early mating period, and to baseline non-breeding levels immediately after mating season had ended, offsetting the high cost of maintaining both high testosterone and high levels of male-male aggression in the early breeding period.  相似文献

This study examined the endogenous androgen regulation of the marking behavior in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). In the first experiment, developmental changes of fecal testosterone levels, ventral gland growth, and the marking frequency of male gerbils were investigated. From 9 weeks of age, marking frequency increased with increases in fecal testosterone levels and ventral gland size. The ventral gland size and marking frequency were significantly correlated to the fecal testosterone level. In the second experiment, we hypothesized that reduction in the marking frequency of subordinate males after social confrontations was controlled by a decrease in the circulating testosterone level, and we followed changes in marking frequency, endocrine status, and ventral gland size after social confrontations in which two adult male gerbils established their social ranks by fighting. As expected, marking frequency and ventral gland size were significantly related to social rank, that is, marking frequency was higher among dominant gerbils and lower among subordinates. In addition, fecal corticosterone levels among subordinates were higher than those of dominant animals. However, neither the fecal and plasma testosterone levels, nor testis size, differed between dominant and subordinate gerbils. These results revealed that endogenous androgen played a role in regulating marking behavior and ventral gland size during the developmental stage and that the reductions in marking frequency and ventral gland size occurring in subordinate males after social confrontations were not directly regulated by androgen changes.  相似文献

During estrus, the female domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) displays scent marking behavior (chinning), which is immediately inhibited after mating, temporarily recovers, and then declines and remains inhibited across pregnancy. Chinning is inhibited by progesterone (P) and the activation of the progesterone receptor (PR), but it is unlikely that P participates in the “acute” (immediate) or “early” inhibition of chinning (24 to 96 h post-mating, before plasma P levels rise). Since PR is activated in a ligand-independent manner by a variety of signaling molecules, some of which (e.g., GnRH) are also associated with reflexive ovulation in this species, we hypothesized that neurochemical/neuroendocrine signals associated with mating activate PR, resulting in the inhibition of chinning. In Experiment 1, we tested whether the PR antagonist, RU486 (20 mg, injected s.c. at − 1 h, or at − 7 h and + 3 h relative to mating) prevented the post-mating inhibition of chinning in intact females. RU486 did not prevent the post-mating decline in chinning, indicating that PR activation associated with mating is not necessary for this effect. In Experiment 2, we used ovariectomized (OVX), estradiol benzoate (EB)-treated females to test the hypothesis that ovarian signaling is necessary for the post-mating inhibition of chinning. The acute inhibition of chinning occurred in OVX females, but the early inhibition was absent. We conclude that ovarian signaling is necessary for the early, but not acute, post-mating inhibition of chinning. The PR seems not to participate in either of these phases.  相似文献

This study compared changes in sexual behavior of male gerbils with changes in scent-marking frequency following castration and exposure to various doses of testosterone. Castration eliminated sexual activity in male gerbils. Injections of testosterone propionate (75 μg twice weekly) prevented this decrease. Larger (600 μg) injections of testosterone propionate or implantation of Silastic capsules of testosterone reinstated mating behavior. Sexual behavior showed a different pattern of changes than scent marking. Sexual behavior was maintained more effectively than scent marking by hormone injections, but scent marking was reinstated more readily than sexual behavior by the tonic hormone levels produced by Silastic implants.  相似文献

The androgen dependent scent marking behavior of male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) can be stimulated after castration by either testosterone or estrogen, but not by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). To determine if DHT fails to evoke scent marking because it cannot be aromatized to form an estrogen, two other nonaromatizable androgens, 1α-methyltestosterone and 6α-fluorotestosterone, were studied. 6α-Fluorotestosterone and its propionate ester stimulated scent marking in castrated male gerbils as effectively as testosterone and its ester did. Hence, an androgen's aromatizability does not determine its ability to influence gerbil scent marking behavior.  相似文献

We measured plasma androgen (combined testosterone and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone) (A) and corticosterone (B) in the promiscuous green turtle (Chelonia mydas) during courtship in the southern Great Barrier Reef. This study examined if reproductive behaviors and intermale aggression induced behavioral androgen and adrenocortical responses in reproductively active male and female green turtles. Associations between reproductive behavior and plasma steroids were investigated in green turtles across the population and within individuals. Levels across a range of both asocial and social behaviors were compared including (a) free swimming behavior; (b) initial courtship interactions; (c) mounted behavior (male and female turtles involved in copulatory activities); (d) intermale aggression (rival males that physically competed with another male turtle or mounted males recipient to these aggressive interactions); and (e) extensive courtship damage (male turtles that had accumulated excessive courtship damage from rival males). Behavioral androgen responses were detected in male turtles, in that plasma A was observed to increase with both attendant and mounted behavior. Male turtles who had been subjected to intermale aggression or who had accumulated severe courtship damage exhibited significantly lower plasma A than their respective controls. No pronounced adrenocortical response was observed after either intermale aggression or accumulation of extensive courtship damage. Female turtles exhibited a significant increase in plasma B during swimming versus mounted behavior, but no change in plasma A. We discuss our results in terms of how scramble polygamy might influence behavioral androgen interactions differently from more typical combative and territorial forms of male polygamy.  相似文献

The relationship between sexual selection and extinction risk has rarely been investigated. This is unfortunate because extinction plays a key role in determining the patterns of species richness seen in extant clades, which form the basis of comparative studies into the role that sexual selection may play in promoting speciation. We investigate the extent to which the perceived risk of extinction relates to four different estimates of sexual selection in 1030 species of birds. We find no evidence that the number of threatened species is distributed unevenly according to a social mating system, and neither of our two measures of pre-mating sexual selection (sexual dimorphism and dichromatism) was related to extinction risk, after controlling for phylogenetic inertia. However, threatened species apparently experience more intense post-mating sexual selection, measured as testis size, than non-threatened species. These results persisted after including body size as a covariate in the analysis, and became even stronger after controlling for clutch size (two known correlates of extinction risk). Sexual selection may therefore be a double-edged process-promoting speciation on one hand but promoting extinction on the other. Furthermore, we suggest that it is post-mating sexual selection, in particular, that is responsible for the negative effect of sexual selection on clade size. Why this might be is unclear, but the mean population fitness of species with high intensities of post-mating sexual selection may be especially low if costs associated with multiple mating are high or if the selection load imposed by post-mating selection is higher relative to that of pre-mating sexual selection.  相似文献

The current study examined acute and long-term effects of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) exposure during puberty on copulation, vocalizations, scent marking, and intermale aggression, both with and without tail pinch, in intact male rats. Animals received 5 mg/kg of testosterone, nandrolone, stanozolol, or vehicle, beginning at puberty. After 5 weeks, behavior tests were performed while continuing AAS injections. AAS treatment was then discontinued. Behaviors were tested during 3-5 weeks, 9-11 weeks, and 15-17 weeks of withdrawal. During AAS administration, stanozolol males showed significant reductions in all behaviors compared with controls, except aggression with tail pinch. Nandrolone treatment significantly reduced vocalizations and scent marking, and testosterone had no significant effect on behavior. During withdrawal, behaviors in stanozolol males recovered to control levels at variable rates: aggression at 4 weeks; mounts, vocalizations, and scent marking at 9 weeks; and ejaculations at 15 weeks of withdrawal. Stanozolol males showed significantly higher levels of tail pinch-induced aggression during every withdrawal test. Nandrolone-treated males scent-marked at control levels by 9 weeks withdrawal but displayed significantly fewer vocalizations and significantly more tail pinch-induced aggression than controls for the entire study. Testosterone-treated males scent-marked significantly below controls at 3 weeks withdrawal and showed significantly more tail pinch-induced aggression at 5 weeks withdrawal. All three AAS significantly increased tail pinch-induced aggression compared with corresponding nontail pinch tests, even at study endpoint. These results suggest that alterations in androgen-dependent behaviors by pubertal AAS exposure can persist long after drug exposure, and some effects may even be permanent.  相似文献

Abstract. The expected proportion of males in androdioecious populations (those comprised of males and hermaphrodites) largely depends on the fertilization opportunities of males. If male mating opportunities are low due to restricted access to hermaphroditic eggs, then populations will be hermaphrodite-biased. Hermaphrodites have two mechanisms available to limit male mating success: (1) pre-mating barriers to outcrossing, in which hermaphrodites choose not to pair with males and (2) post-mating barriers to outcrossing, in which hermaphrodite sperm has greater access to eggs than male sperm. In this study, we measured male mating success in the androdioecious clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana when pre-mating barriers to outcrossing were removed. These branchiopod crustaceans are small (5–8 mm), filter feeders that live in ephemeral pools in the deserts of the southwestern United States. Using genetic markers, we measured male mating success in laboratory experiments in two populations of these shrimp. We correlated mating success with clasping time, clasping during egg transfer, and male thrusting during egg transfer. Males fertilized an average of 24–40% of the hermaphrodites' eggs. Outcrossing success was positively correlated with clasping duration, and was nearly an order of magnitude higher for males thrusting during egg transfer relative to thrusting at other times during pairing. Because these estimates of mating success were similar to previously reported estimates (in which both pre- and post-mating barriers to outcrossing were potentially important), we deduced that pre-mating barriers to outcrossing do not greatly decrease male outcrossing success in E. texana ; the low fertilization (25–50% of available eggs) by males is thus due to post-mating barrier(s) to outcrossing.  相似文献

Maintaining surplus captive male antelope in bachelor groups can result in aggression in some species, leading to injury or death. Suppressing endogenous testosterone using gonadotropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH) analogs has been used in primates to control aggressive behavior, but little information is available on the use of GnRH analogs in nondomestic ruminant species. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a slow‐release GnRH agonist (deslorelin) on circulating hormone concentrations, semen and sperm characteristics and behavior in male gerenuk, dorcas gazelle, and scimitar horned oryx. Body weight, testicular volume, circulating hormone concentrations, ejaculate traits, and behavior were recorded before and during deslorelin treatment. A GnRH challenge (with serial blood sampling) was administered to gerenuk and dorcas gazelles before and during GnRH analog treatment. Quantitative behavioral data were collected for gerenuk and dorcas gazelles for 30 min three times a week, starting 1 month before deslorelin treatment, and the mean incidence of combined aggressive behaviors (supplanting, foreleg kicking, sparring, marking, and mounting) was compared before and during deslorelin treatment. No statistical difference (P>0.05) in body weight, semen volume, sperm concentration, percent sperm motility, percent sperm plasma membrane integrity, or percent normal sperm morphology was found before or during deslorelin treatment. The characteristic rise in luteinizing hormone (LH), occurring ~10 min following administration of a GnRH challenge in untreated males, was not evident during deslorelin treatment, although tonic LH concentrations were maintained. No differences (P>0.05) in the mean incidence of any aggressive behavioral traits in gerenuk or dorcas gazelle were detected before and during deslorelin. The absence of a GnRH‐induced increase in serum LH in treated males indicated that deslorelin suppressed pituitary responsiveness to endogenous GnRH, but that the continued tonic production of LH was sufficient to maintain testosterone production, aggressive behavior, and subsequent semen production. Asian musk shrews (Suncus murinus) are induced ovulators, but exhibit no cyclic changes in reproductive structures or in sexual behavior. Mating behavior is induced by contact with a male. To determine if mating induces changes in ovarian steroidogenesis, ovaries removed from unmated animals and at 3, 10, 15, and 36 h after mating were cultured for 4 h in the presence or absence of gonadotropins (LH + FSH, 1 microgram/ml). Histological analysis revealed no obvious changes in follicular size or appearance at the end of culture in ovaries cultured at 3 and 10 h post-mating, as compared with ovaries from unmated shrews, and mating did not stimulate any discernable changes in steroid secretion in these two groups. However, at the end of the culture period, ovulation had occurred or was occurring in ovaries from 35% of the animals ovariectomized at 15 h after mating, and corpora lutea (CLs) were present in 39% of ovarian pairs obtained 36 h after mating. At 15 h post-mating, ovaries with ovulations secreted three times more estradiol than did ovaries that showed no evidence of stimulation by mating, but there were no differences in testosterone or progesterone production. In contrast, ovaries isolated 36 h post-mating with CLs secreted dramatically more of all three steroids than ovaries without CLs (23, 13, and 52 times more estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone, respectively). These data are consistent with plasma concentrations of estradiol at the time of ovariectomy, which were twice as high at both 15 and 36 h after mating, in animals whose ovaries showed evidence of ovarian stimulation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Blood samples were obtained each month for 18 months in 1984-85 from wild-caught California ground squirrels. Circulating testosterone and total oestrogens were extracted from the plasma, measured by radioimmunoassay and compared with concurrent changes in plasma progesterone and prolactin in the same individuals. Male plasma testosterone concentrations peaked in January, shortly before mating, whereas female testosterone concentrations were low throughout the year. Female plasma oestrogen concentrations peaked in February, during the mating period. Juvenile males exhibited a transient increase in circulating testosterone in September, followed by testis growth, preputial separation, and the appearance of epididymal spermatozoa. Juvenile females exhibited a transient increase in circulating oestrogens in November. By the start of the first mating season after their births, neither juvenile males nor females differed significantly from same-sex adults with respect to plasma concentrations of oestrogen or testosterone. Plasma concentrations of progesterone and prolactin in killed individuals were similar to those obtained in previous studies of free-living S. beecheyi. Mean plasma concentrations of all measured hormones varied significantly with reproductive condition in adults of both sexes.  相似文献

Testosterone is a steroid hormone with diverse effects on male reproductive function and behavior. The relationship between testosterone and social behavior such as mating and aggression has been investigated in a variety of primate species, but few such studies have been conducted on chimpanzees, and even fewer on primates during the juvenile and adolescent periods. This study explores the relationship between baseline urinary testosterone and behavioral variables including dominance rank, rates of aggression toward peers, and behavioral style in 16 juvenile and adolescent male chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) living at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana. Behavioral observations and urine collection occurred during four research periods, each a year apart. After correcting for the positive association between testosterone and age, testosterone was positively associated with both dominance rank and rates of aggression directed at others. It was negatively associated with rates of aggression received. Individuals scoring highest in the "mellow" behavioral style component showed higher levels of testosterone than individuals scoring lowest in this component, an effect that may be partially due to the confounding effect of rank. The results of this study suggest that hormonal changes during the period preceding adulthood are not simply programmed physiological processes tied primarily to age-related change, but that important age-independent relationships with behavior also exist.  相似文献

Male birds frequently face a trade-off between acquiring mates and caring for offspring. Hormone manipulation studies indicate that testosterone often mediates this trade-off, increasing mating effort while decreasing parental effort. Little is known, however, about individual covariation between testosterone and relevant behavior on which selection might act. Using wild, male dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), we measured individual variation in testosterone levels before and after standardized injections of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The GnRH challenges have been shown to produce short-term testosterone increases that are similar to those produced naturally in response to social stimuli, repeatable in magnitude, and greater in males with more attractive ornaments. We correlated these testosterone increases with behavioral measures of mating and parental effort (aggressive response to a simulated territorial intrusion and nestling feeding, respectively). Males that showed higher postchallenge testosterone displayed more territorial behavior, and males that produced higher testosterone increases above initial levels displayed reduced parental behavior. Initial testosterone levels were positively but nonsignificantly correlated with aggression but did not predict parental behavior. These relationships suggest that natural variation in testosterone, specifically the production of short-term increases, may underlie individual variation in the mating effort/parental effort trade-off. We discuss the implications of these results for the evolution of hormonally mediated trade-offs.  相似文献

Environmental cues and social interactions are known to influence reproductive physiology and behavior in vertebrates. In female birds, male courtship displays can result in the growth of ovarian follicles, the production of reproductive hormones, and stimulation of oviduct development, all of which have the potential to influence maternal investment. Male Japanese quail follow a typical sequence of copulatory behaviors during a mating interaction and often force copulations with unreceptive females. We hypothesized that female Japanese quail could adjust maternal investment in response to male copulatory behaviors during a single mating interaction. We investigated the relationships between 1) male copulatory behaviors and post-mating concentrations of steroids in the female, 2) female steroid concentrations and fertilization success of inseminations and 3) female steroid concentrations and the offspring sex ratio. We found that male condition and copulatory behaviors predicted female steroid concentrations and maternal investment in eggs laid after a mating trial. The body condition of one or both mates was a significant predictor of the changes in female corticosterone and testosterone concentrations after mating, whereas specific male copulatory behaviors significantly predicted changes in female progesterone concentrations. Male and female body condition, male neck grabs and post-mating concentrations of female corticosterone, progesterone, and testosterone were all significant predictors of egg fertilization rates. Female body condition, male copulation efficiency, and female testosterone concentrations were significant predictors of offspring sex ratios. Our results show that phenotypic and behavioral characteristics of male Japanese quail modulate female steroid concentrations and result in changes in maternal investment.  相似文献

A study spanning two breeding seasons was carried out to examine changes in the size of the dorsal paracloacal glands and testes in the marsupial sugar glider Petaurus breviceps Waterhouse 1839. These changes were related to seasonal increases in the plasma testosterone concentration and to morphological changes in the frontal and gular cutaneous scent glands of males.
Both dorsal paracloacal glands and testes underwent a seasonal cycle of development which reached its maximum during the June-September breeding season. These changes coincided with an increase in the plasma testosterone concentration and with the increase in activity of certain cell types within the frontal and gular glands.
Castration caused a significant decrease in the size of the dorsal paracloacal glands, while androgen replacement was effective in restoring the glands to their pre-castration size thus demonstrating the influence of androgens upon the activity of these glands.
The synchronization which exists between plasma testosterone concentration, cutaneous scent gland morphology and the size of the dorsal paracloacal glands of males, suggests that the dorsal paracloacal glands, or more likely their secretions, are important in social organization in this species.  相似文献

Little is known about the hormonal control of behavior in marsupials. In the present study, the effects of castration and of testosterone or estradiol replacement therapy on scent marking and precopulatory behavior in male gray short-tailed oppossums (Monodelphis domestica) were examined. It was found that castration resulted in decreases in chest and flank/hip marking displayed by male gray opossums. Testosterone but not estradiol stimulated chest marking in castrates. Males treated with either estradiol or testosterone displayed more flank/hip marking than control males. Highest levels of female aggression toward males were seen when the males had received testosterone treatment. These findings are discussed with respect to similarities and differences between marsupials and eutherians in the neural metabolism of testosterone and the hormonal control of scent marking behavior.  相似文献
