Abstract.  The control of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae), the vectors of leishmaniasis, is directed mostly against adults as larvae develop in unknown or inaccessible habitats. In the current study we tested geraniol, a natural plant-derived product, as a space repellent and the synthetic pyrethroid prallethrin as a diffusible insecticide. Geraniol was dispersed in the air using diffusers with an electric fan and prallethrin was evaporated using electrically heated evaporators. Both substances were tested in inhabited bedrooms and in tents. Geraniol failed to effect significant reductions in the numbers of either Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli in rooms or Phlebotomus sergenti Parrot in tents. In laboratory experiments, geraniol proved ineffective in preventing sandflies from feeding. By contrast, prallethrin was highly effective in reducing the number of sandflies in rooms as well as in tents. Exposure of sandflies to prallethrin in laboratory experiments caused 97% mortality rates. Both prallethrin and, to a lesser extent, geraniol reduced the number of Culex mosquitoes captured in tents. Electric liquid-vaporizers with 1.5% prallethrin are highly effective in protecting people from sandfly bites in confined spaces and may be useful in combating cutaneous leishmaniasis.  相似文献

For organisms with complex life cycles, larval environments can modify adult phenotypes. For mosquitoes and other vectors, when physiological impacts of stressors acting on larvae carry over into the adult stage they may interact with infectious dose of a vector-borne pathogen, producing a range of phenotypes for vector potential. Investigation of impacts of a common source of stress, larval crowding and intraspecific competition, on adult vector interactions with pathogens may increase our understanding of the dynamics of pathogen transmission by mosquito vectors. Using Aedes aegypti and the nematode parasite Brugia pahangi, we demonstrate dose dependency of fitness effects of B. pahangi infection on the mosquito, as well as interactions between competitive stress among larvae and infectious dose for resulting adults that affect the physiological and functional ability of mosquitoes to act as vectors. Contrary to results from studies on mosquito–arbovirus interactions, our results suggest that adults from crowded larvae may limit infection better than do adults from uncrowded controls, and that mosquitoes from high-quality larval environments are more physiologically and functionally capable vectors of B. pahangi. Our results provide another example of how the larval environment can have profound effects on vector potential of resulting adults.  相似文献

Phlebotomine sandflies are vectors of important pathogens world-wide, including Leishmania spp. in the Neotropics. Entomoparasites have been described from phlebotomines, including virus, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, nematodes, and mites, some of which are capable of killing the host. In the present study, interference, fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopies were used for the first time to detect and morphologically characterize a new entomoparasite infecting Lutzomyia longipalpis. Several filiform larvae and eggs in different stages were encountered in the abdomen of female and male insects. Pairs of large egg-bearing nematodes found within cyst-like structures or free in the hemocel accompanied by larvae could be the adult sexual stages. This entomoparasite infects sand flies naturally in the field. We believe that stress caused by the colonization procedure produced an increase in the infection rate among sand flies affecting their development. These findings could be applied to future biological control studies of sand fly vectors.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the infection level of adult forms and larvae of ticks and mosquitoes with Borrelia burgdorferi in the forested areas of Szczecin. A total of 1699 ticks Ixodes ricinus, including 1422 nymphs, 277 adult forms and 2862 mosquito females representing the genera Aedes (89.6%) and Culex (10.4%) were collected between the years 2004 and 2005. A further 3746 larvae and 1596 pupae of Culex pipiens pipiens were colleted from water bodies. Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. was detected in the arthropods by the method of indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). A positive immunological reaction was detected in 16.6% of the adult forms and in 16.5% of the nymphs of Ixodes ricinus. Spirochetes were also detected in 1.7% of mosquito females, 3.2% of larvae and in 1.6% of pupae of Culex pipiens pipiens. The results of the present study confirm that contact with ticks constitutes the main risk of contracting Lyme disease, although mosquitoes play a role as vectors as well.  相似文献

Methods of finding larvae and pupae of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are described and the known types of breeding sites used by sandflies are listed. Three ways of detecting sandfly breeding places are the use of emergence traps placed over potential sources to catch newly emerged adult sandflies; flotation of larvae and pupae from soil, etc., and desiccation of media to drive out the larvae. Even so, remarkably little information is available on the ecology of the developmental stages of sandflies, despite their importance as vectors of Leishmania, Bartonella and phleboviruses affecting humans and other vertebrates in warmers parts of the world. Regarding the proven or suspected vectors of leishmaniases, information on breeding sites is available for only 15 out of 29 species of sandflies involved in the Old World and 12 out of 44 species of sandflies involved in the Americas, representing approximately 3% of the known species of Phlebotominae. Ecotopes occupied by immature phlebotomines are usually organically rich moist soils, such as the rain forest floor (Lutzomyia intermedia, Lu. umbratilis, Lu. whitmani in the Amazon; Lu. gomezi, Lu. panamensis, Lu. trapidoi in Panama), or contaminated soil of animal shelters (Lu. longipalpis s.l. in South America, Phlebotomus argentipes in India; P. chinensis in China; P. ariasi, P. perfiliewi, P. perniciosus in Europe). Developmental stages of some species (P. langeroni and P. martini in Africa; P. papatasi in Eurasia; Lu. longipalpis s.l. in South America), have been found in a wide range of ecotopes, and many species of sandflies employ rodent burrows as breeding sites, although the importance of this niche is unclear. Larvae of some phlebotomines have been found in what appear to be specialized niches such as Lu. ovallesi on buttress roots of trees in Panama; P. celiae in termite hills in Kenya; P. longipes and P. pedifer in caves and among rocks in East Africa. Old World species found as immatures in the earthen floor of human habitations include P. argentipes, P. chinensis, P. martini and P. papatasi. Much more information on sandfly breeding sites is required to facilitate their control by source reduction.  相似文献

Two hypotheses for how conditions for larval mosquitoes affect vectorial capacity make opposite predictions about the relationship of adult size and frequency of infection with vector-borne pathogens. Competition among larvae produces small adult females. The competition-susceptibility hypothesis postulates that small females are more susceptible to infection and predicts frequency of infection should decrease with size. The competition-longevity hypothesis postulates that small females have lower longevity and lower probability of becoming competent to transmit the pathogen and thus predicts frequency of infection should increase with size. We tested these hypotheses for Aedes aegypti in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during a dengue outbreak. In the laboratory, longevity increases with size, then decreases at the largest sizes. For field-collected females, generalised linear mixed model comparisons showed that a model with a linear increase of frequency of dengue with size produced the best Akaike’s information criterion with a correction for small sample sizes (AICc). Consensus prediction of three competing models indicated that frequency of infection increases monotonically with female size, consistent with the competition-longevity hypothesis. Site frequency of infection was not significantly related to site mean size of females. Thus, our data indicate that uncrowded, low competition conditions for larvae produce the females that are most likely to be important vectors of dengue. More generally, ecological conditions, particularly crowding and intraspecific competition among larvae, are likely to affect vector-borne pathogen transmission in nature, in this case via effects on longevity of resulting adults. Heterogeneity among individual vectors in likelihood of infection is a generally important outcome of ecological conditions impacting vectors as larvae.  相似文献

Spontaneous flight activity of Dirofilaria immitis-infected Aedes trivittatus was evaluated by using an acoustic activity system. The activity of mosquitoes infected with low numbers of filarial larvae (1-4) was similar to that of uninfected mosquitoes. However, mosquitoes infected with more than 4 larvae became more active than uninfected mosquitoes 8 days after infection. Peak flight activity (circadian) occurred at the same time in both infected and uninfected mosquitoes, but infected mosquitoes were much more active during normal periods of quiescence. Flight activity of mosquitoes infected with more than 4 larvae was suppressed on days 10 and 14 postinfection, corresponding to times of greatest disruption of the Malpighian tubules by the developing larvae.  相似文献

The Arboviral diseases are caused by arthropod-borne viruses, such as Mayaro virus (MAYV), the etiological agent of Mayaro fever. This disease has been drawing the attention of the public health authorities for the increased number of cases likely due to virus adaptation for survival to urban areas as well as infection and multiplication in other vectors insects. Therefore, this work aimed to identify the MAYV infecting Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Goiânia, the capital of state of Goiás, Brazil. For the development of study, the larvae of A. aegypti were collected in Basic Health Units from different regions of Goiânia then the larvae were grown to adult mosquitoes in controlled laboratory conditions. The female mosquitoes were submitted to the procedure of head and body separation. The RNAs obtained from these samples were analyzed by real-time PCR for identification of arboviruses. We only detect the presence of MAVY in the mosquitoes, in this sense our findings suggest that A. aegypti harbor MAYV in different anatomical sites, and potentially the process of vertical transmission of MAYV can occur in this vector.  相似文献

A monitoring of male and larvae of mosquitoes was conducted during 1991-1994, at the Irrigation Project in Arenal-Tempisque, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. CDC CO2-baited traps were used to collect adults of mosquitoes and dips were used for immatures of culicids. A total of 1,480 larvae and 1,129 males of culicids were identified resulting in, Aedes with 6 species, Anopheles, Mansonia and Psorophora with 2 species, Culex with 21 species and Haemagogus, Limatus, Toxorhynchites and Uranotaenia with only one species each. The results indicate that, as occurred in other countries, irrigation projects must be under strict monitoring programs to prevent and control possible health problems in which mosquitoes act as vectors.  相似文献

The average number of infective larvae recovered from Brugia pahangi-infected Aedes aegypti was approximately one-half that recovered from the controls after the former group of infected mosquitoes had ingested a 1.0% solution of sulfisoxazole diolamine (SXZ) in 10% sucrose-water for 4 consecutive days, beginning 4 days after infection. Most of the filarial larvae from the SXZ-treated mosquitoes were small and sluggish compared with those from the controls. There was no increased mortality of mosquitoes that ingested 1.0% SXZ in sugar-water for 4 days. Average filarial larval burdens were not decreased in mosquitoes that ingested a solution of 10(-6) M methotrexate (MTX), a potent dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, in sugar-water for 4 days, beginning 4 days after infection. The distributional pattern of larval burdens in mosquitoes that ingested combined 1.0% SXZ and 10(-6) M MTX in sugar-water for 4 days closely resembled that seen in mosquitoes that had imbibed 1.0% SXZ only. Average filarial larval burdens were not decreased in mosquitoes with 4-day-old B. pahangi infections that fed upon jirds which received intraperitoneal injections of SXZ (2 g/kg) and MTX (1 mh/kh), alone and in combination, 1 hr previously. Survival of the mosquitoes that fed upon the drug-treated hosts was unaffected, as was the hatchability of their eggs and subsequent growth and development of the mosquito larvae.  相似文献

Over the last decade, remote sensing technologies and geographical information systems have moved from the research arena into the hands of vector control specialists. This review explains remote sensing approaches and spatial information technologies used for investigations of arthropod pests and vectors of diseases affecting humans and livestock. Relevant applications are summarized with examples of studies on African horse sickness vector Culicoides midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), malaria vector Anopheles and arbovirus vector culicine mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), leishmaniasis vector Phlebotomus sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae), trypanosomiasis vector tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae), loaiasis vector Chrysops (Diptera: Tabanidae), Lyme disease vector Ixodes and other ticks (Acari: Ixodidae). Methods and their uses are tabulated and discussed with recommendations for efficiency, caution and progress in this burgeoning field.  相似文献

Tolypocladium cylindrosporum Gams isolated fromAedes australis Erichson in New Zealand, and another strain isolated from soil in Czechoslovakia have shown pathogenicity for larvae of mosquitoes. The infection was transmited with conidia suspended in water and hyphae entered the body of larvae from the midgut. First symptoms of the infection appear 5 days after infection; in 7 days all exposed larvae were killed. Pupae and adult mosquitoes were not infected. Both strains grow and sporulate well on Sabouraud's agar. Somme morphological data show the variability of hyphae, conidiophores and conidia.  相似文献

Regularities of migration of microfilarians from the stomach to haemocoel in connection with blood digestion and peritrophic membrane formation were studied in sandflies of S. arpaklensis experimentally infected with larvae of Th. ivaschkini. Whatever the number of swallowed parasites, the average number of larvae reaching the haemocoel does not exceed 5. Factors limiting the invasion are the thick layer of prosecretion of the peritrophic membrane and a peculiar way of clot formation during the feeding of S. arpaklensis sandflies with blood of reptiles. The results obtained are compared with data on members of the genus Phlebotomus and other bloodsucking Diptera.  相似文献

Invertebrate iridescent viruses (Iridoviridae) possess a highly cytotoxic protein. In mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), invertebrate iridescent virus 6 (IIV-6) usually causes covert (inapparent) infection that reduces fitness. To determine whether sublethal effects of IIV-6 are principally due to cytotoxicity of the viral inoculum (which inhibits macromolecular synthesis in the host), or caused by replication of the virus larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti (L) were exposed to untreated IIV-6 virus that had previously been deactivated by heat or ultraviolet light. Control larvae were not exposed to virus. Larval development time was shortest in control larvae and extended in larvae exposed to untreated virus. Covertly infected mosquitoes laid significantly fewer eggs, produced between 20 and 35% fewer progeny and had reduced longevity compared to other treatments. Wing length was shortest in mosquitoes exposed to heat-deactivated virus. Multivariate analysis of the same data identified fecundity and progeny production as the most influential variables in defining differences among treatments. Overall, viral infection resulted in a 34% decrease in the net reproductive rate (R0) of covertly infected mosquitoes, vs. only 5-17% decrease of R0 following treatments with deactivated virus, compared to controls. Sublethal effects of IIV-6 in Ae. aegypti appear to be mainly due to virus replication, rather than cytotoxic effects of the viral inoculum.  相似文献

The number of prey killed by diverse predator communities is determined by complementarity and interference among predators, and by traits of particular predator species. However, it is less clear how predators' nonconsumptive effects (NCEs) scale with increasing predator biodiversity. We examined NCEs exerted on Culex mosquitoes by a diverse community of aquatic predators. In the field, mosquito larvae co‐occurred with differing densities and species compositions of mesopredator insects; top predator dragonfly naiads were present in roughly half of surveyed water bodies. We reproduced these predator community features in artificial ponds, exposing mosquito larvae to predator cues and measuring resulting effects on mosquito traits throughout development. Nonconsumptive effects of various combinations of mesopredator species reduced the survival of mosquito larvae to pupation, and reduced the size and longevity of adult mosquitoes that later emerged from the water. Intriguingly, adding single dragonfly naiads to ponds restored survivorship of larval mosquitoes to levels seen in the absence of predators, and further decreased adult mosquito longevity compared with mosquitoes emerging from mesopredator treatments. Behavioral observations revealed that mosquito larvae regularly deployed “diving” escape behavior in the presence of the mesopredators, but not when a dragonfly naiad was also present. This suggests that dragonflies may have relaxed NCEs of the mesopredators by causing mosquitoes to abandon energetically costly diving. Our study demonstrates that adding one individual of a functionally unique species can substantially alter community‐wide NCEs of predators on prey. For pathogen vectors like mosquitoes, this could in turn influence disease dynamics.  相似文献

Sandflies (Diptera: Phlebotominael are vectors of Leishmania parasites, causative agents of important human and animal diseases with diverse manifestations. This review summarizes present knowledge about the vectorial part of Leishmania life cycle and parasite transmission to the vertebrate host. Particularly, it focuses on molecules that determine the establishment of parasite infection in sandfly midgut. It describes the concept of specific versus permissive sandfly vectors, explains the epidemiological consequences of broad susceptibility of permissive sandflies and demonstrates that genetic exchange may positively affect Leishmania fitness in the vector. Last but not least, the review describes recent knowledge about circulating antibodies produced by hosts in response to sandfly bites. Studies on specificity and kinetics of antibody response revealed that anti-saliva IgG could be used as a marker of host exposure to sandflies, i.e. as a useful tool for evaluation of vector control.  相似文献

Life table statistics were used to examine the survival functions of filarial susceptible and refractory species of the Aedes scutellaris (Walker) group of mosquitoes, following infection with high and moderate doses of Brugia pahangi (Buckley & Edeson). Survivorship curves and hazard function curves were generated, and the median survival times and the proportions of mosquitoes surviving beyond the extrinsic incubation period of the parasite were determined. In the susceptible populations of Aedes polynesiensis Marks, Ae. pseudoscutellaris (Theobald) and Ae.tabu Ramalingam & Belkin a dose-response relationship was detected between parasite load and mortality. This relationship was characterized by a significant reduction in the proportions of infected female mosquitoes surviving at days 1 and 9 postinfection, reduction in the median survival times and an increase in the hazard rates as the infectious dose increased. The survival of the refractory species, Ae.alcasidi Huang and Ae.katherinensis Woodhill was not significantly affected by the infection. A positive correlation between microfilaraemia in the vertebrate host and parasite load in the susceptible mosquito populations was also observed. Regression analysis of the number of parasites recovered from susceptible mosquitoes at the time of death showed that mosquitoes at highest risk of dying harboured from 11.6 to 19.4 infective larvae when fed on a gerbil with sixty-five microfilariae per 20 microliters blood; this resulted in 34.4-40.2% mortality by day 9 postinfection. A mean number of 32.6-46.9 infective larvae was observed when these populations were exposed to a gerbil with a microfilaraemia of 150 mf/20 microliters and resulted in 72.8% to 80% mortality in these populations. Viable infective larvae were recovered from infected mosquitoes up to 50 days postinfection.  相似文献

The midgut epithelium of female Lutzomyia longipalpis was investigated by means of electron microscopic morphometry before and during blood digestion. Ultrastructure and cytological changes of the stomach cells upon blood feeding were generally similar to the ones described for Phlebotomus longipes (Gemetchu, 1974) and for mosquitoes (Hecker, 1977), In addition, the quantitative composition of the cells resembled the one of mosquitoes in many respects. Despite some morphological differences in the functional gut cytology, it can be admitted that, in general, digestive processes may run similarly in the midguts of sandflies and mosquitoes.  相似文献

The melanization response against intrathoracically inoculated Brugia pahangi and Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae (mff) isolated from vertebrate host blood was evaluated in both uninfected Aedes aegypti black-eyed Liverpool strain and in mosquitoes harboring a developing B. pahangi infection. The immune response against inoculated mff of either species was significantly reduced by 28-47% in infected as compared with uninfected mosquitoes. Attempts to passively transfer this suppression factor(s) by inoculating naive mosquitoes with 0.1-0.2 microliter of hemolymph from B. pahangi-infected mosquitoes produced equivocal results. The role this parasite-induced immune suppression might play in aiding parasite survival in compatible vectors is discussed.  相似文献

The ecology and epizootology of Microsporidia were studied in the natural population of malarial mosquitoes from Western Siberia over a 30-year period. Symptoms of the disease, host specificity and character of parasite localization in host tissues were investigated. Microsporidia of 9 species from 4 genera, namely Amblyospora, Crepidulospora, Senoma, and Parathelohania, were found in the malarial mosquito larvae from the territory examined. The mosquito species Anopheles messeae was infested by larger number of the microsporidian species, than A. beklemishevi. Spores and active stages of the microsporidian Senoma sp. from mosquito larvae are localized in epithelial cells of the host's intestine. There are no external signs of the infestation. The infested larvae do not die, and the infection proceeds to the pupal stage. Microsporidians of the genus Parathelohania infest larvae of both male and female mosquitoes. The parasites localized in the fat body cells. Body of the infested host gets an opaque white color in the period of spore maturation. The infested larvae perish at 4th stage. Microsporidian spores are formed in the mosquito larvae of both sexes. However, infection rate is much higher in the male larvae (77.8%), than that in the female larvae (22.2%). Symptoms of the disease under the infestation by the genera Crepidulospora and Amblyospora are similar to those under the infestation by Parathelohania sp. There are no external signs of the infestation in the adult mosquito females. In these hosts microsporidians form large two-nuclear spores with a thin capsule accounted for transovarial transmission. An about two times decrease of fertility in the Anopheles messeae females infested by the Parathelohania microsporidians is revealed. Mean number of eggs laid by the infested females was 121, while that of the noninfested ones was 232. Thus, the cause of the decrease in the mosquito abundance is both the elimination of male larvae and the decrease of fertility in females. In Siberia malarial mosquitoes yield 2 or 3 generations per year. Infested larvae are rarely occurred in the beginning of summer. Maximal extensiveness of the invasion may be observed in the end of summer, because of the accumulation of the infection in water bodies. Number of the peaks of infestation coincides with the peaks of abundance of mosquito larvae of 4th stage. Peaks of infestation are delayed as compared with the peaks of mosquito abundance. It is an evidence of the development delay in the infested larvae. Long-term dynamics of the infestation by microsporidians is studied. The epizooty caused by Parathelohania was observed in the malarial mosquitoes in the eighties (with the infestation rate up to 62 %). In the last ten years the infestation rate was low (from 0.1 to 2.6%).  相似文献
