Defenses induced by herbivore feeding or phytohormones such as methyl jasmonate (MeJA) can affect growth, reproduction, and herbivory, not only on the affected individual but also in its neighboring plants. Here, we report multiannual defense, growth, and reproductive responses of MeJA‐treated bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and neighboring ramets. In a boreal forest in western Norway, we treated bilberry ramets with MeJA and water (control) and measured responses over three consecutive years. We observed the treatment effects on variables associated with herbivory, growth, and reproduction in the MeJA‐treated and untreated ramet and neighboring ramets distanced from 10 to 500 cm. MeJA‐treated ramets had fewer grazed leaves and browsed shoots compared to control, with higher effects in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In 2013, growth of control ramets was greater than MeJA‐treated ramets. However, MeJA‐treated ramets had more flowers and berries than control ramets 2 years after the treatment. The level of insect and mammalian herbivory was also lower in untreated neighboring ramets distanced 10–150 cm and, consistent with responses of MeJA‐treated ramets, the stronger effect was also one and 2 years delayed, respectively. The same neighboring ramets had fewer flowers and berries than untreated ramets, indicating a trade‐off between defense and reproduction. Although plant–plant effects were observed across all years, the strength varied by the distance between the MeJA‐treated ramets and its untreated neighbors. We document that induced defense in bilberry reduces both insect and mammalian herbivory, as well as growth, over multiple seasons. The defense responses occurred in a delayed manner with strongest effects one and 2 years after the induction. Additionally, our results indicate defense signaling between MeJA‐treated ramets and untreated neighbors. In summary, this study shows that induced defenses are important ecological strategies not only for the induced individual plant but also for neighboring plants across multiple years in boreal forests.  相似文献

The effects of herbivory were simulated on stands of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) in a boreal Empetrum-Myrtillus type forest. Five harvesting intensities were used (0% (A), 25% (B), 50% (C), 100% (D) of the bilberry ramets or all the ramets of all species (E)). Density and biomass of the stands, and growth of the ramets were monitored for five growth seasons, from 1986 to 1990. After damage new ramets emerged rapidly from dormant buds at the base of removed ramets. Between 70 and 97% of the density relative to the control level was regained by the final harvest. However, only between 11 and 64% of the biomass relative to the control level was recovered. Clipping reduced the branch growth, both in the new ramets and in the new parts of the old, unclipped ramets. Severe treatments (D and E) decreased the growth more than did light harvesting (B and C). Survival and fecundity of the ramets were not affected. The result therefore suggested that the bilberry is not able to recover totally from severe herbivory damage between the years of peak rodent population that shows a 3–4 year cycle. Nevertheless, extreme grazing pressure is rare in boreal ecosystems as alternative food is available for herbivores, and predators also limit the herbivore population. Hence the bilberry exhibits moderate tolerance of the usual level of herbivory damage.  相似文献

We compared the abundance, population structure and palatability of bilberry ramets on vole-free islands, islands with voles but no predators (predator-free islands) and mainland sites with both voles and predators. As expected, bilberry biomass was strongly correlated with the herbivory pressure exerted by the voles, since it was significantly lower on the mainland, and much (>80%) lower on the predator-free islands, than on the vole-free islands. However, another finding, which conflicts with hypotheses postulating that herbivory generally induces plant defenses, was that voles preferred ramets from predator-free islands. Bilberry plants were fairly tolerant to grazing since they compensated for some of the lost tissue by producing more new ramets. This response should promote stability in the plant–herbivore interaction by reducing the impact of past grazing on current food production and thus minimizing time delays in the interactions that could potentially generate population cycles.  相似文献

Abstract. The deciduous Vaccinium myrtillus and the evergreen Vaccinium vitis‐idaea were subjected to five removal treatments of understorey layers: control, removal of the moss layer, removal of the field layer, removal of both moss and field layers and removal of moss, field and humus layers. A second factor, sowing, was included to investigate sexual reproduction after disturbance. Density of new ramets and seedlings and growth of annual shoots were studied for the first two growing seasons, whereas cover was measured for five growing seasons after disturbance treatment. Initially, vegetative production of new ramets and species cover increased rapidly in all disturbed plots, except for the most severe treatment, in which production of new ramets was virtually absent throughout the study. Full recovery following removal of the field layer only or both field and moss layers was reached after four years for V. myrtillus. V. vitis‐idaea recovered more quickly, after one year (removal of field layer only) and four years (removal of field and moss layers). The relative growth of V. myrtillus and V. vitis‐idaea increased in the latter treatment in terms of production of annual shoots and length of annual shoots, respectively. Seedling density increased after sowing in the most severe treatment. The results underscore the importance of vegetative growth for recovery of these species at moderate‐level disturbances. The high rate of sexual reproduction in the most severe treatment implies that strong mechanical disturbance is needed to enhance the establishment of new genotypes in these species.  相似文献

An earlier onset of photosynthesis in spring for boreal forest trees is predicted as the climate warms, yet the importance of soil vs air temperatures for spring recovery remains to be determined. Effects of various soil- and air-temperature conditions on spring recovery of photosynthesis in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings were assessed under controlled environmental conditions. Using winter-acclimated seedlings, photosynthetic responses were followed after transfer to different simulated spring conditions. Recovery rates for photosynthetic electron transport and net CO(2) uptake were slower in plants from cold or frozen soil compared with controls. In addition, a greater fraction of light absorbed was not used photochemically, but was dissipated thermally via xanthophyll cycle pigments. Intermittent frost events decreased photosynthetic capacity and increased thermal energy dissipation. Within a few days after frost events, photosynthetic capacity recovered to prefrost levels. After 18 d under spring conditions, no difference in the optimum quantum yield of photosynthesis was observed between seedlings that had been exposed to intermittent frost and control plants. These results show that, if air temperatures remain favourable and spells of subfreezing air temperatures are only of short duration, intermittent frost events delay but do not severely inhibit photosynthetic recovery in evergreen conifers during spring. Cold and/or frozen soils exert much stronger inhibitory effects on the recovery process, but they do not totally inhibit it.  相似文献

Animals that feed on forest tree seeds, such as Apodemus mice, increase in number after a mast year. At high latitudes, there is a similar delayed response by Myodes voles to high seed crops of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), but here the mechanism is hypothesised to be increased forage quality, caused by a trade-off between reproduction and defence in the plants. Both Apodemus mice and Myodes voles eat berries, but only the latter feed on bilberry plants. Hence, only Myodes voles are predicted to respond to bilberry peak years. A second prediction is that the effect should last longer than any possible direct impacts of bilberries, because the plants would not be able to rebuild their defence until the succeeding summer. During a 21-year snap-trapping study of small rodents in Southern Norway, the spring population of bank vole (Myodes glareolus) was positively related to a bilberry seed index of the previous year, indicating increased winter survival, whereas the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) was not affected. Also the succeeding autumn population index of the bank vole was positively related to the bilberry index of the previous year, even when controlling for spring population levels. The wood mouse population responded to mast years of sessile oak (Quercus petraea), whereas seeds of Norway spruce (Picea abies) seemed to have some impact on both species. It is concluded that these rodents are mainly limited from below, but by different mechanisms for the granivorous and the herbivorous species.  相似文献

Frost events in natural plant populations can have dramatic demographic consequences. For many plant species, spring emergence occurs when probability of damaging frost is low. Climate change, however, may alter weather patterns such that the environmental cues signaling spring emergence no longer coincide with periods of low frost risk, rendering plant populations susceptible to damaging frost events more frequently than in the past. In 2007, a spring freeze occurred in the eastern United States after a period of unusually warm temperatures. We took advantage of a long-term demographic dataset for American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) to examine among and within population patterns of frost damage, as well as the effects of the frost on ginseng demography. Higher temperatures prior to the frost event increased the probability and extent of frost damage at the population level. Within populations, large plants tended to be damaged more frequently than smaller plants. Survival, growth, and reproduction were reduced in frost-damaged plants compared to undamaged plants in the year of the frost event, and negative effects on growth and reproduction persisted the following year. For plants such as ginseng, increases in frost frequency will negatively impact population growth, and likely have serious ramifications for long-term population viability.  相似文献

The suitability of an electrical conductivity assay of leaf material for determining frost hardiness in winter cauliflower was established. The assay was used to monitor the changes in hardiness of field-grown plants during two seasons at two sites. Levels of frost hardiness were related to mean air temperature over the 7-day period prior to sampling (r = 0.6008, P< 0.001). There was no clear disjunction of any temperature to indicate a threshold temperature of hardening. Dehardening occurred in spring and during mild spells in winter. In the mild regions where this crop is grown commercially it is likely that plants are not fully hardened for much of the winter. This may facilitate curd growth but may put the crop at risk from frost damage.  相似文献

Because monocarpic perennial plants have only one reproductive opportunity in their entire life, they need to ensure offspring production. Some plants reproduce both sexually and vegetatively, and vegetative reproduction could possibly compensate for seed production. Therefore, the role and significance of these reproductive modes is likely to differ between monocarps and polycarps, which can reproduce many times. Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii is a monocarpic perennial that reproduces both sexually and vegetatively (bulblet formation). Here, we investigated the characteristics and contribution to population maintenance of sexual and vegetative reproduction to reveal the significance of these two reproductive modes in this species. First, we found that bulblet formation occurred in plants after the three‐leaved rosette stage. Second, resource allocation experiments revealed that although resources were mainly invested in fruit maturation after the flowering season, resource allocation was switched from sexual reproduction to vegetative reproduction if seed production was insufficient. Third, the outcrossing rate in this species varied greatly according to the environment surrounding the population. However, reproductive assurance by selfing kept seed production stable even if flowers did not receive sufficient pollen for full seed set via outcross pollination, and moreover, there was no intensive inbreeding depression. Finally, genotypic identification of ramets suggested that daughter ramets derived from vegetative reproduction received the space that the mother flowering ramet had occupied until the previous year.  相似文献

Clonal plants spread vegetatively within their habitats by forming rooted ramets on stolons or rhizomes. Each of these ramets is capable of an independent existence after establishment. Nevertheless, ramets remain physically connected by stolon or rhizome internodes for variable periods of time, thereby allowing for resource movement and signal transduction within clones.Interconnected ramets of clonal plants, though potentially independent and totipotent, can specialize functionally in the performance of limited numbers of tasks such as the uptake of resources from above- vs below-ground sources, carbohydrate storage, vegetative spread and sexual reproduction. Such specialization and cooperation is comparable to a division of labour in economic systems or in colonies of social animals. The ecological significance of division of labour in clonal plants may be found in the increased efficiency of entire clones in exploiting their environments. Two different types of division of labour in clonal plants will be discussed in this review. The first type is an environmentally-induced specialization of ramets in the uptake of locally abundant resources (plastic division of labour), which can be found in several stoloniferous species. Evidence exists that this response increases resource uptake in spatially heterogeneous environments. The second type of division of labour, which occurs mainly in rhizomatous species, relates to a developmentally-programmed specialization and cooperation between interconnected ramets. This response pattern is thought to enhance plant performance by restricting the number of tasks for individual ramets and thereby significantly increasing the efficiency of task performance. In some plants, such an inherent division of labour is likely to contribute to nutrient extraction from poor and unpredictably variable sources. In this article not only benefits but also potential costs and constraints on division of labour in clonal plants are shown. The aim is to provide a review of existing knowledge and to develop concepts and hypotheses for future research.  相似文献

We examined costs of sexual reproduction and clonal propagation, and their consequences for resource allocation in the clonal stoloniferous herb, Potentilla anserina, a typical pioneer species in disturbed areas. We used heavy-metal treatment in soil to create unfavourable growing conditions, because costs of reproduction are more likely to be expressed when resources are limited. We also studied whether heavy metals affect the plasticity of clonal growth form that enables the plants to avoid poor growing conditions. Ramets collected from field were grown in a greenhouse under the heavy-metal treatment consisting of a control and two levels of heavy-metals added in soil. Clonal propagation was costly in terms of total biomass of flowering ramets. Also the costs of sexual reproduction were detected in flowering ramets. Contrary to our predictions, the costs of flower production were visible in the control but not in the heavy-metal contaminated plants. Only the flowering ramets were able to produce longer stolons under heavy-metal stress, but the stolon biomass was not affected by heavy metals. Results indicate that clonal propagation and sexual reproduction may be costly for P. anserina. However, the costs are modified by heavy-metal contamination.Co-ordinating editor: J. Tuomi  相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess whether or not oxidative stress had developed in a dwarf shrub bilberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus L.) under long-term exposure to enhanced levels of ultraviolet-B (u.v.-B) radiation. The bilberry plants were exposed to increased u.v.-B representing a 15% stratospheric ozone depletion for seven full growing seasons (1991–1997) at Abisko, Swedish Lapland (68°N). The oxidative stress was assessed on leaves and stems by analysing ascorbate and glutathione concentrations, and activities of the closely related enzymes ascorbate peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.11) and glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2). The affects of autumnal leaf senescence and stem cold hardening on these variables were also considered. The results showed that the treatment caused scarcely any response in the studied variables, indicating that u.v.-B flux representing a 15% ozone depletion under clear sky conditions is not sufficient to cause oxidative stress in the bilberry. It is suggested that no strain was evoked since adaptation was possible under such u.v.-B increases. The studied variables did, however, respond significantly to leaf senescence and especially to stem cold hardening.  相似文献

Bilberry plants (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) at a field site in northern Finland (65°N) were subjected to nitrogen fertilization [6.5 mmol m?2 NH4NO3× Ca(OH)2] at the beginning of 3 growing seasons in late May and to trace gas fumigation (CO2 and O3) for 5 months (May–September) in 1993–1995 in order to investigate frost resistance and glutathione concentrations during the winter hardening period, and to assess the correlation between these variables. Harvesting was performed twice in the autumn of both 1994 and 1995, and the two-year data for each harvest were pooled. The frost resistance of the bilberry stems increased by about 10°C during the hardening period between the two harvests. Nitrogen fertilization increased the frost resistance towards late autumn. The fumigation treatments had no marked effect on it. The combination of elevated CO2 and nitrogen fertilization induced a decrease in frost resistance. Increases in total glutathione concentrations and the proportion of reduced glutathione (GSH) in the stems were evident during hardening. Nitrogen fertilization positively affected the total glutathione concentration and the proportion of GSH at the beginning of the hardening period but the effect disappeared during the hardening process. Trace gas fumigation as such had no marked effect on glutathione concentration. Increases in glutathione concentrations during hardening did not correlate with frost resistance, possibly due to different timing of the appearence of the response to fertilization treatment, i.e., glutathione responded in the beginning of hardening while frost resistance at the end. The lack of correlation with frost resistance, and especially the different responses to nitrogen fertilization, may reflect the indirect role of glutathione in the development of winter hardening, as a transport and storage form of reduced nitrogen and sulphur. In conclusion, winter hardening and glutathione status in the bilberry seems to be sensitive to nitrogen fertilization, and not affected by elevated CO2 and O3.  相似文献

Background and Aims

It is important to consider the modular level when verifying sexual dimorphism in dioecious plants. Nevertheless, between-sex differences in resource translocation among modules (i.e. physiological integration) have not been tested at the whole-plant level. In this study, sexual differences in physiological integration were examined among ramets, within a genet in the dioecious sprouting shrub Lindera triloba, by a field experiment with girdling manipulation.

Methods

Female and male genets were randomly assigned to girdled or intact groups. Girdling of the main ramets was conducted in May 2009 by removing a ring of bark and cambium approx. 1 cm wide at a height of 80–100 cm. The effects of treatment and sex on ramet dynamics (mortality, recruitment and diameter growth) and inflorescence production during 1 year after girdling were examined.

Key Results

The diameter growth rate of main ramets of both sexes was lower at ground level (D0) but higher at breast height (dbh) in girdled than in intact groups. In sprouted ramets with a dbh of 0–2 cm, males in girdled groups had lower growth rates at D0 than those of intact groups, whereas no girdling effect was found for females. The main ramets in girdled groups produced more inflorescences than intact groups, irrespective of sex, but male ramets showed a greater response to the treatment than females.

Conclusions

In L. triloba, physiological integration exists at the whole-plant level, and sprouted ramets are dependent on assimilates translocated from main ramets, but this dependence weakens as sprouted ramets get larger. Female sprouted ramets can grow in a physiologically independent manner from the main ramet earlier than those of males. This study highlights the importance of considering modular structures and physiological integration when evaluating sexual differences in demographic patterns of clonal plants.  相似文献

For a natural population of Allium ursinum age states are defined on the basis of morphological criteria Differences in the dry matter economy of these age states illustrate the underlying life history
Most seeds rest several years m dormancy after maturity It takes on average more than 6 yr until juvenile plants attain the dry matter threshold level for the production of an inflorescence Flowering plants divert 41% of their dry matter gain during spring to reproductive parts (7% to the seeds) Since flowering plants show a marked negative annual dry matter balance, c 81% of them are not able to flower again the next year
At the same expense of carbon reserves the formation of daughter bulbs results in a considerably higher number of new ramets than the production of seeds Nevertheless, the investment in seed production is extraordinarily high in relation to other woodland perennials This might be explained by the lack of an effective dispersal of the daughter bulbs By vegetative propagation dense groups of adult ramets develop, which will finally undergo mutual shading  相似文献

Recent studies (Rapacz 1999) have shown that cultivars of spring-type oilseed rape are able to cold-acclimate to the level comparable with winter cultivars, but only after prehardening which results both in the increase of photosynthetic activity and in growth cessation. It is commonly known that under field conditions spring-type cultivars could not survive winter. Present studies were undertaken to explain the reasons for low winter hardiness of spring type rape plants. Six cultivars of spring and two of winter rape were sown in the open-air vegetation room at the end of August. The obtained results indicate that the degree of frost damage in spring-type plants increased in the course of winter and this increase was parallel to elongation of generative shoots observed after periods of warming. Each spring cultivar was completely killed by frost just after its generative shoot reached 15–20 cm, irrespective of its frost resistance level, determined previously under laboratory conditions. In the case of winter cultivars survival rate was consistent with laboratory-estimated frost resistance. It is suggested that spring rape could not survive winter because of its limited ability to prevent shoot elongation during winter at temperatures slightly above 0 °C. It was also found that less efficient photosynthetic electron transport in autumn was observed in these spring cultivars in which the elongation of generative shoots was observed already during the first warm break in winter.  相似文献

Leiothrix curvifolia var. lanuginosa and Leiothrix crassifolia are endemic and sympatric species in the Brazilian rupestrian grasslands, a habitat that has a predominance of sandy and shallow soils with low water retention. Based on the premise that soil moisture is one of the abiotic factors that affects most reproduction in plants, we hypothesized that the flowering phenology events and establishment of sexual and vegetative offspring would occur in the periods of higher soil water availability. We marked 478 ramets distributed among 100 genets of L. curvifolia var. lanuginosa and 693 ramets distributed among 100 genets of L. crassifolia, so that they could be observed monthly along the two rainy seasons from December 2003 to 2004. Both species showed phenological synchrony in the flower heads and seedlings production with soil moisture availability. Seedling mortality was intense in the dry period. Unlike the seedlings, the ramets survived was 100%. The greater capacity of ramets to survive can result from a much greater biomass compared with seedlings, and ramets become adult much faster. We conclude that for a successful seedling establishment, the synchronization with the rainy season was required, and moreover, that repeated seedling recruitment can be important for the maintenance of local populations of these species which suffer from high seedling mortality in the drought period. It is likely that the coincidence of the rainy period with seedling establishment is an important factor that determines the flowering phenological pattern of L. curvifolia var. lanuginosa and L. crassifolia in rupestrian grasslands.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Frost tolerance of wheat depends primarily upon a strong vernalization requirement, delaying the transition to the reproductive phase. The aim of the present study was to learn how saturation of the vernalization requirement and apical development stage are related to frost tolerance in wheat. METHODS: 'Mironovskaya 808', a winter variety with a long vernalization requirement, and 'Leguan', a spring variety without a vernalization requirement, were acclimated at 2 degrees C at different stages of development. Plant development (morphological stage of the shoot apex), vernalization requirement (days to heading) and frost tolerance (survival of the plants exposed to freezing conditions) were evaluated. KEY RESULTS: 'Mironovskaya 808' increased its frost tolerance more rapidly; it reached a higher level of tolerance and after a longer duration of acclimation at 2 degrees C than was found in 'Leguan'. The frost tolerance of 'Mironovskaya 808' decreased and its ability to re-acclimate a high tolerance was lost after saturation of its vernalization requirement, but before its shoot apex had reached the double-ridge stage. The frost tolerance of 'Leguan' decreased after the plants had reached the floret initiation stage. CONCLUSIONS: The results support the hypothesis that genes for vernalization requirement act as a master switch regulating the duration of low temperature induced frost tolerance. In winter wheat, due to a longer vegetative phase, frost tolerance is maintained for a longer time and at a higher level than in spring wheat. After the saturation of vernalization requirement, winter wheat (as in spring wheat) established only a low level of frost tolerance.  相似文献

Patterns of sexual reproduction and clonal growth were investigated in the understory palm Reinhardtia gracilis var. gracilior over a 3-yr period. R. gracilis is a very abundant clonal palm in the tropical rain forest of Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, México. Because ramets form clumps, genets are easily identified in the field. Genets were monitored in a 0.5-ha area, and classified by size according to the number of ramets they possessed. In contrast to clonal growth, sexual reproduction was highly dependent on genet size. The probability of reproduction, the number of inflorescences, and the number of fruits produced were positively correlated with genet size. However, neither the probability of producing a ramet, nor the number of ramets produced per genet were correlated with genet size. Over the 3 yr of study, 55% of the genet population had at least one ramet with reproductive structures, while <1% (a single genet in one year) had six ramets with flowers. Thirty-two percent of the mature genets reproduced during each of three consecutive years. In contrast, 58% of the genets produced no new ramets during these 3 yr. No evidence was found of a trade-off between clonal growth and sexual reproduction. Ramet production increases genet size and this in turn increases genet reproductive performance. Clonal growth in this species may be viewed as a growth strategy that tends to maximize genet fitness.  相似文献

Buds and shoot tips of wild bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberry (V. vitis-idaea L.) plants were cultured on a modified MS medium containing N6-isopentenyladenine (2iP), 9.8–78.4 μM, in order to study the effect of the 2iP-concentration on the initiation of growth. The experiment was first performed in the autumn and repeated in the spring to determine the influence of season on growth initiation. To optimise rooting, three different rooting treatments were tested for the bilberry and lingonberry microshoots. Shoots were rooted either in vitro with 0.49 μM IBA (indole-3-butyric acid) or ex vitro, incubating microshoots in 2.07 mM KIBA-solution (potassium salt of IBA) before planting, or microshoots were planted directly on peat without exogenous auxin. The best 2iP concentration for the initiation of the growth for bilberry was 49.2 μM and for lingonberry 24.6 μM. It was observed that increasing the 2iP concentration at the growth initiation stage increased the number of brownish explants both in bilberry and in lingonberry microcultures. Spring was a considerably better time than autumn for the initiation of new growth, for both species. The results of the rooting test showed that the KIBA-treatment before planting on peat increases rooting efficiency in both bilberry and lingonberry. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
