Dispersal capacity plays a central role in the radiation of animals, facilitating the exploitation of habitats variously distributed in space or in time or both. Many living species are unable to leave a host, crawl around, and find a new host, so they must rely on external factors to be transmitted. Biotical factors may be important in passive transport and the process, by means of which an animal is passively transported by a selected carrier of different species, is known as "phoresy". Phoresy is a phenomenon in which one animal (the phoretic) seeks out and attaches to an animal of another species, with which it does not share any phase of the life cycle, for dispersal, during which time the phoretic animal becomes quiescent, stopping feeding and development. Activity starts again beginning with detachment, induced by stimuli originating from its carrier or the microhabitat. The adaptive traits of phoresy may be categorized as follow: host surface, quiescence, recognition of signals to abandon the carrier and, if needed, synchronization with the host life cycle. Phoresy is exploited by many Arthropods. In Acarina, there are basically four main types of phoresy. First, there is a type in which adult females are the only forms becoming phoretic and attachment is by means of chelicerae, palpal hooks and ambulacral claws, which grasp a seta or a fold of the integument of carrier-host. The second type is represented by mites, in which deutonymphs are phoretic; there is generally no cheliceral or sucker attachment in this group, mites instead hanging on by their ambulacral claws. The third type is similar to the second in that deutonymphs are phoretic; however, in this case, attachment to the host is by means of an anal pedicel formed by a substance, extruded through the anus, which hardens upon coming in contact with air and literally glues the mite to its host. In the fourth type there is a very highly modified deutonymph stage, called hypope, which only occurs at certain times, presumably when environmental conditions are no longer appropriate for the mite. Hypope is simplified morphologically, may have many sucker-like discs or claspers for efficient attachment, and is much more resistant to desiccation than are other stages of the life cycle.  相似文献

Blood and erythrocyte suspensions have non-linear pressure-flow curves and so do not possess a unique Newtonian coefficient of viscosity (or its reciprocal, the fluidity) except in the physically unrealizable limits of infinite flow rate and tube radius. However, three coefficients can be defined which are related mathematically to one another and which converge in these infinite limits. They are first, the apparent fluidity, which is proportional to the slope of the line joining any given point on the pressure-flow curve with the origin; second, the differential fluidity, which is proportional to the slope of the pressureflow curve itself at any given point; and third, the generalized fluidity which is proportional to the ratio of the shear rate to the applied stress across any given cylindrical lamina (taken here at the tube wall) within the tube. These three coefficients, which are related mathematically to one another, have been calculated from measured pressure-flow curves for erythrocyte suspensions in glass tubes, and the differential viscosity has been used to develop a simple flow model in which the shear-dependent viscosity is assumed to arise from “structural changes” in the fluid as the flow rate increases. Although the physical basis of such structural changes is uncertain, it is likely that some sort of axial redistribution of the red cells is of greatest importance at normal, physiological hematocrit values.  相似文献

An expression is given for the contribution to the relative elongation by any volume element or its surface. The case in which only a constant surface tension is acting is considered in greater detail. From measurements of an egg in several stages, the empirical variation of an expression proportional to the above function is obtained. In the constricting region and near the ends of the cells, the change of shape is opposite to that which would be due to a constant surface tension alone. The effect of streaming which may arise from a variable surface tension is considered. The effect of forces which arise in this manner may be sufficient to explain the discrepancy in the constricting region if the streaming is considered due largely to such a variable surface tension.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to illustrate and evaluate a synthesis procedure which has been extended to tackle bioprocesses. Physical property information is used to screen candidate units thereby reducing the size of the synthesis problem. In this way, only units which exploit large property differences between components in a stream are selected. This is important for bioprocesses because of the large number of components and wide range of unit operations which are available. The screening technique and bioprocess-unit-design methodologies have been incorporated within an implicit enumeration algorithm which was developed for chemical process synthesis and is implemented in Java programming language. An important advantage is the ability of the bioprocess synthesis software to generate a ranked list of flowsheets which may subsequently be analyzed in more detail. Two case studies are used to evaluate the bioprocess-synthesis technique. The first system involves a product which is secreted from the host organism. The second has significantly different characteristics in that the product is intracellular and forms inclusion bodies. The latter case study, in particular, is a large synthesis problem with 12 unit operations and 20 contaminant compounds. The results show that the synthesis methodology identifies a set of economically optimal flowsheets in a reasonable computational time which demonstrates its ability to deal with large synthesis problems. Using the synthesis methodology we can generate bioprocesses which are optimal in a system-wide, rather than unit-by-unit, sense.  相似文献

It is proposed that classifications used in science are of two main types; those which are designed to solve practical problems and which are based on conventions, and those which are designed to solve theoretical problems, based on theories, and in which the classes are tested by experiment. An attempt has been made to construct a preliminary classification of viruses which is of the second type. It is based on the theories of molecular biology, with the use of computer-based comparisons of the molecular weights and base ratios of viral nucleic acids to assign the viruses to clusters which show a high degree of correlation with groupings based on nucleic acid hybridization, serological cross-reactions, and phenotypic properties.  相似文献

Above pH 8.5, pepsinogen is converted into a form which cannot be activated to pepsin on exposure to low pH. Intermediate exposure to neutral pH, however, returns the protein to a form which can be activated. Evidence is presented for a reversible, small conformational change in the molecule, distinct from the unfolding of the protein. At the same time, the molecule is converted to a form of limited solubility, which is precipitated at low pH, where activation is normally seen. The results are interpreted in terms of the peculiar structure of the pepsinogen molecule. Titration of the basic NH2-terminal region produced an open form, which can return to the native form at neutral pH, but which is maintained at low pH by neutralization of carboxylate groups in the pepsin portion.  相似文献

The behavior of two individuals, consisting of effort which results in output, is considered to be determined by a satisfaction function which depends on remuneration (receiving part of the output) and on the effort expended. The total output of the two individuals is not additive, that is, together they produce in general more than separately. Each individual behaves in a way which he considers will maximize his satisfaction function. Conditions are deduced for a certain relative equilibrium and for the stability of this equilibrium, i.e., conditions under which it will not “pay” the individual to decrease his efforts. In the absence of such conditions “exploitation” occurs which may or may not lead to total parasitism. Some forms of the inverse problem are considered, where the form of behavior is given and forms of the satisfaction function are deduced which lead to it.  相似文献

In this study, more details of the different parts of the "ocelloide" of Nematodinium are given. The "hyalosome" which has a radial symmetry is made of endoplasmic reticulum, except the mitochondrial layer. There is only one constrictor ring and only a beginning of the periocellar gallery. The basal sheet on which the crystalline lens lies is a local differentiation of the cortical layer which is observed on the ceiling of the ocellar camera. This camera is related to the intercingular sulcus. There is also an ocellar fiber. The "melanosome" which is made of a double membrane and of many couples of thylakoids is flattened dorso-ventrally. The structure of the retina is similar to that observed in the other Warnowiidae. The pigmented ring is rather well developed and is in continuity with the upper part of the retina. Owing to the simpler organization of its ocelloide, Nematodinium is situated before the genera Warnowia and Erythropsidinium in the evolutionary series.  相似文献

The renal tubules were investigated with the use of ruthenium red and lanthanum nitrate to titrate the carbohydrate groups which are localized on the differentiated surface of the cell membranes and intercellular spaces. Ruthenium red visualized the surface coat which is tightly bound to the outer lamellae of the cell membrane. Lanthanum nitrate used in this investigations is a valuable marker of the intercellular spaces. The applied markers have visualized in the kidney the canals which are originated from the foldings of membranes of the tubular cells which adhere to the basal membrane. The markers used in combination with the fixative glutaraldehyde-paraformaldehyde give an electrondense envelope of the cell membrane which is more distinct as compared with specimen treated with glutaraldehyde and markers only.  相似文献

The laws of thermodynamics are employed as an analytical framework within which results about society's metabolism may be rigorously deduced in energetic and material terms. We demonstrate that the occurrence of waste is an unavoidable necessity in the industrial production of desired goods. Although waste is thus an essential qualitative element of industrial production, the quantitative extent to which waste occurs may vary within certain limits according to the degree of thermodynamic (in) efficiency with which these processes are operated. We discuss the question of which proportion of the amount of waste currently generated is due to thermodynamic necessity and which proportion is due to thermodynamic inefficiency.  相似文献

Phytoremediation, a novel plant-based remediation technology, is applied to a variety of radionuclide-contaminated sites all over the world. Phytoremediation is defined as the use of green plants to remove pollutants from the environment or to render them harmless. Current status of several subsets of phytoremediation of radionuclides is discussed: (a) phytoextraction, in which high biomass radionuclide-accumulating plants and appropriate soil amendments are used to transport and concentrate radionuclides from the soil into the above-ground shoots, which are harvested with conventional agricultural methods, (b) rhizofiltration, in which plant roots are used to precipitate and concentrate radionuclides from polluted effluents, (c) phytovolatilization, in which plants extract volatile radionuclides from soil and volatilize them from the foliage and (d) phytostabilization, in which plants stabilize radionuclides in soils, thus rendering them harmless. It is shown that phytoremediation is a fast developing field and the phytoremediation of radionuclides might soon become an integral part of the environment management and risk reduction process.  相似文献

通过石蜡切片法,光学显微镜观察,研究了沉香叶的解剖结构。结果表明,沉香叶为典型的异面叶,但具有许多旱生特征。表皮由一层排列紧密的形状不规则的表皮细胞组成,细胞外壁角质膜较厚,上表皮角质膜较下表皮的厚3.48μm,下表皮上零星分布着单细胞表皮毛,气孔类型为无规则型,仅分布在下表皮上,微下陷;叶肉组织发达,其间分布着较多的长方晶体,其长轴与表皮垂直;栅栏组织由1~2层圆柱形细胞组成,其外层细胞转化为异细胞,栅栏组织∶海面组织为1∶3.5,下表皮内具有1~2层由异细胞组成的下皮层;主脉发达,有异细胞组成的维管束鞘,具内生韧皮部;叶内具有发达的木质部外纤维。以上特征反映出植物结构与环境的统一性。  相似文献

T4 endonuclease V is a pyrimidine dimer-specific endonuclease which generates incisions in DNA at the sites of pyrimidine dimers by a processive reaction mechanism. A model is presented in which the degree of processivity is directly related to the efficacy of the one-dimensional diffusion of endonuclease V on DNA by which the enzyme locates pyrimidine dimers. The modulation of the processive nicking activity of T4 endonuclease V on superhelical covalently closed circular DNA (form I) which contains pyrimidine dimers has been investigated as a function of the ionic strength of the reaction. Agarose gel electrophoresis was used to separate the three topological forms of the DNA which were generated in time course reactions of endonuclease V with dimer-containing form I DNA in the absence of NaCl, and in 25, 50, and 100 mM NaCl. The degree of processivity was evaluated in terms of the mass fraction of form III (linear) DNA which was produced as a function of the fraction of form I DNA remaining. Processivity is maximal in the absence of NaCl and decreases as the NaCl concentration is increased. At 100 mM NaCl, processivity is abolished and endonuclease V generates incisions in DNA at the site of dimers by a distributive reaction mechanism. The change from the distributive to a processive reaction mechanism occurs at NaCl concentrations slightly below 50 mM. The high degree of processivity which is observed in the absence of NaCl is reversible to the distributive mechanism, as demonstrated by experiments in which the NaCl concentration was increased during the time course reaction. In addition, unirradiated DNA inhibited the incision of irradiated DNA only at NaCl concentrations at which processivity was observed.  相似文献

Structural analysis of the initial steps in protein folding is difficult because of the swiftness with which these steps occur. Hence, the link between initial polypeptide chain collapse and formation of secondary and other specific structures remains poorly understood. Here, an equilibrium model has been developed for characterizing the initial steps of folding of the small protein barstar, which lead to the formation of a productive molten globule in the folding pathway. In this model, the high-pH-unfolded form (D form) of barstar, which is shown to be as unstructured as the urea-denatured form, is transformed progressively into a molten globule B form by incremental addition of the salt Na(2)SO(4) at pH 12. At very low concentrations of Na(2)SO(4), the D form collapses into a pre-molten globule (P) form, whose volume exceeds that of the native (N) state by only 20%, and which lacks any specific structure as determined by far- and near-UV circular dichroism. At higher concentrations of Na(2)SO(4), the P form transforms into the molten globule (B) form in a highly noncooperative transition populated by an ensemble of at least two intermediates. The B form is a dry molten globule in which water is excluded from the core, and in which secondary structure develops to 65% and tertiary contacts develop to 40%, relative to that of the native protein. Kinetic refolding experiments carried out at pH 7 and at high Na(2)SO(4) concentrations, in which the rate of folding of the D form to the N state is compared to that of the B form to the N state, indicate conclusively that the B form is a productive intermediate that forms on the direct pathway of folding from the D form to the N state.  相似文献

Water which remains unfrozen at ?25 °C in the presence of phosphatidyl choline (PC) gives rise to a proton magnetic resonance signal which can be used to measure the hydration of single-walled vesicles and multilamellar liposomes of PC. The proton magnetic resonance signal of the unfrozen water in these systems is strongly dependent upon the nature of the molecular domain in which the water is situated. For example, at cholesterol to PC molar ratios below 35 mol%, the vesicle hydration signal consists of a relatively narrow symmetric peak (line width, ~150 Hz). At higher molar ratios, however, rather broad asymmetric signals appear (line widths, ~300–1000 Hz) which indicate that when significant quantities of cholesterol are packed in the bilayer there must be regions in which there is a preferred direction for motion of the unfrozen water. It is possible to solubilize significant quantities of cholesterol by sonicating it in concentrated solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Addition of cholesterol to PC vesicles via these sodium dodecyl sulfate-cholesterol complexes caused hydration changes in the PC, which, at high cholesterol to PC molar ratios, paralleled the effects of cholesterol on PC hydration in homogeneous vesicles in which the cholesterol and PC were simply cosonicated.  相似文献

Summary The aim is to design a machine which is able to learn a number of idealised characters and to recognise them, irrespective of their size, position and context on an infinite retina. If the number of characters which such a machine can possibly learn to recognise is astronomical, it is not practical to use separate templates for every possible character. It is more economical to use, instead, templates for various parts, called features, of characters. In recognising a number of characters simultaneously, without scanning, the question arises of how to tell which feature belongs to which character of figure on the retina. In particular, if a given character is not present but all its features are included in nonsense figures simultaneously present on the retina then the machine must not indicate the presence of the given character. The technique which overcomes this difficulty employs overlapping features which must be mutually consistent for recognition. This consistency technique is assessed by comparison with a more conventional technique, and the work is restricted to closed line characters which are not subject to deformations or mutilations.  相似文献

One way in which coagulation may be initiated is by the action of factor VIIa (a plasma serine protease) and tissue factor (a membrane-bound lipid-dependent glycoprotein). We show that in the absence of either factor VIIa or tissue factor, the activation of the natural coagulation substrates, factors IX and X, is not detectable; i.e., tissue factor is an essential activator. We propose that the reaction is fully ordered; that is, the enzyme-activator complex picks up substrate to form a ternary product forming species. Our model precludes the formation of enzyme-substrate and activator-substrate complexes. We have derived equations for the two possible variations of this model: one in which product formation is accompanied by the release of the enzyme-activator complex and the other in which product, free enzyme, and free activator are formed with each catalytic cycle. Our data support only the former which is consistent with both steady-state and rapid equilibrium assumptions. The model is supported by experiments using a monoclonal anti-tissue factor antibody, which affects only the Km app, and a modified form of factor VIIa, which, depending on the sequence in which reagents are added to the reaction, either decreases the Vmax or increases the Km app. We present equations describing the initial velocity of these reactions. Utilizing dilution-jump experiments, we show that the system is hysteretic and suggest that this phenomenon is due to a slow release of enzyme from activator. However, the kinetically determined dissociation constant of enzyme and activator, previously found to be 4.5 nM under equilibrium conditions, was estimated to be 0.04-0.09 nM. Accordingly, we examined other essential activation models in which the product-forming species consists of a complex of enzyme, activator, and substrate at a molar ratio of 1:1:1; none could account for the apparent tight binding of enzyme and activator. We therefore postulate an ordered addition, essential activation model in which the enzyme undergoes two conformational transformations: one as a consequence of binding to tissue factor, resulting in a species which binds to and hydrolyzes its natural substrates. The other conformational change in the enzyme is induced by substrate, resulting in a species which binds more tightly to its activator. Thus, we hypothesize a "conformational cage" which precludes the dissociation of enzyme from activator while significant concentrations of substrate are present.  相似文献
