European eels Anguilla anguilla from freshwater lakes in Lithuania had slower growth rates and lower backcalculated total lengths ( L T) than those from lagoons and coastal waters, but no significant differences were found among fish with different migratory histories or between naturally recruited and stocked fish except a higher L T at age of stocked European eels at ages 5 to 8 years. The asymptotic L T did not differ among habitats or migratory histories, but the stocked eels in the lakes had smaller K (coefficient from the von Bertalanffy growth function) than did the both naturally recruited and stocked eels in the lagoon and coastal waters. The growth rate of European eels in Lithuania might be influenced mainly by different habitats rather than different migratory histories and stocking. The lower L T at age of naturally recruited fish at ages 5–8 years compared to stocked fish might result from the extra energy costs entailed in migration from the Atlantic and across the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Summary The growth of O. punctatus has been studied from the zones on the opercular bones and scales. Size estimates obtained from the opercular bones and scales were further substantiated by length frequency distribution and back-calculations. A close agreement in length-age relationship was obtained by various methods. These observations provide adequate evidence towards the validity of age determination in O. punctatus.Growth rate differs markedly in the two sexes. Males grow faster than the females. To study the changes in length with age, von Bertalanffy growth equation and Gompertz curve were used. The theoretical lengths obtained from the von Bertalanffy equation agreed very closely with the observed lengths. There is sexual difference in the weight-length relationship of O. punctatus. Modal weight of each year class obtained according to age reading showed that growth in weight is faster in males. The theoretical growth equation gives a good fit for weight-age data. O. punctatus is generally a fish of the impounded waters. The interrelationship between pond environment and growth characteristics has been discussed.  相似文献

Larval fishes and zooplankton were sampled in two hydrographicallydifferent areas on the coast of the Gulf of Maine: SullivanHarbor, an embayment in eastern Maine, and the DamariscottaRiver estuary in western Maine. Sampling was conducted at weeklyintervals from late winter to early summer in each area in 1979and 1980. Phytoplankton chlorophyll concentrations were determinedin each area in 1979. The time of peak catch rates of the dominantlarval fish species occurred one to three weeks earlier in thewestern sample area, the Damariscotta estuary, than in SullivanHarbor in the east. The phytoplankton and zooplankton bloomsalso occurred one to three weeks earlier in the Damariscottaestuary than in Sullivan Harbor. These timing trends are believedto result from the differences in the seasonal hydrographicchanges of the inshore and coastal source waters. Analyses ofthe feeding, length-frequencies, and condition factors of thedominant larval fish species, Pholis gunnellus, are used torelate the apparent survival of the larvae to the timing ofappearance of their forage organisms, the dynamics of whichare determined by the local hydrography and resultant phytoplanktondynamics.  相似文献

Synopsis This paper provides data on the movements, spawning times and localities, size and age composition, growth and diet of the western pygmy perch,Edelia vittata, in a south-western Australian river. The results of this study are compared with those recorded previously for two other locally endemic species (Galaxias occidentalis andBostockia porosa) to ascertain the extent to which these three species utilise the same resources, and whether they are similarly adapted to the highly seasonal flow regime. A total of 3396Edelia vittata was collected with a 3 mm mesh seine net from the Collie River in south-western Australia at 3–6 week intervals over a period of 26 months. During the winter, fish moved from the river into either adjacent flood waters or tributary creeks. The trends shown by gonadosomatic indices, oocyte growth and prevalence of post-ovulatory follicles, demonstrate that spawning takes place between late winter and late spring (July–November). Sexual maturity was attained by both sexes at the end of the first year of life. Although 99% of the fish belonged to the 0+, 1+ and 2+ age classes, representatives of the 3+, 4+ and 5+ age classes were also caught. The respective von Bertalanffy growth curve parameters for L, K and t0 were 54.9, 1.178 and -0.210 for males and 57.9, 1.124 and -0.198 for females. At the end of the first and second years of life, the lengths predicted from the von Bertalanffy growth equations were 42 mm ( 0.8 g) and 51 mm ( 1.4 g) for males and 43 mm ( 0.9 g) and 53 mm ( 1.6 g) for females. The diet consisted of a wide range of small benthic invertebrates, especially dipteran larvae, ostracods and cyclopoid copepods. The peak time, duration and predominant locality of spawning, the time of day when maximum activity occurs and the diet ofEdelia vittata differs from those previously recorded forGalaxias occidentalis andBostockia porosa. These differences would be likely to minimize any potential competition amongst these three species. The growth rates, age at first sexual maturity and pattern of oocyte development also differ amongst the three species.  相似文献

The porthole shovelnose catfish, Hemisorubim platyrhynchos, is the sixth largest pimelodidae of the Pantanal. Its age and growth were studied using pectoral fin-spines from fish collected in the Cuiabá river basin, Pantanal. The fish, which came from commercial and experimental fisheries, were all caught with hook and line. Growth-ring formation time could not be defined through the Kruskal-Wallis test on marginal increment (H = 4.142; p = 0.247). Nevertheless, decrease in the marginal increment index occurring as waters recede suggests this as the probable time when growth rings form. Estimation of the parameters of von Bertalanffy growth curve, adjusted through nonlinear regression to observed fork lengths, with L(infinity) fixed at 64 cm, were: k = 0.222 year(-1); t(o) = -2.149 years. Individual life span was estimated at 11.4 years. The results suggest that fork length is a good predictor of age for individuals of this species.  相似文献

Population stability of the sea snail at the southern edge of its range   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The sea snail Liparis liparis population in the Bristol Channel on the Atlantic coast of Britain is close to the south-western extremity of its range and yet it is one of the more abundant species present. Using a 17-year time series of monthly samples collected at Hinkley Point power station in Bridgwater Bay, Somerset, U.K., the coefficient of variation of annual abundance of sea snail was estimated as 70·48%. Analysis of variance of the six replicate time series showed that 94% of the total variance was attributable to between-year variation in local abundance and only 6% to sampling error. A comparison of the coefficients of variation in the annual number of captures of all the common fish found that the sea snail had one of the more stable populations in the estuary and bottom-living fish tended to show the lowest variability in population number. Arguments based on either the assumed maladaptation of populations at the periphery of their geographical range or the rapid response of short-lived animals to change would have predicted sea snail to have one of the more variable populations. As might be expected for a fish adapted to cooler, more northern and eastern waters, sea snail winter abundance was negatively correlated with seawater temperature. Using the unusual oscillation in water temperature observed during the winter of 1996/199 7 , it is argued that the correlation of sea snail abundance with temperature reflects changes in distribution rather than mortality, with the fish avoiding inshore waters in warm winters. It is hypothesized that demographic plasticity and biotic interactions such as parasite and pathogen attack can result in fish populations showing neither latitudinal nor longitudinal trends of increasing population variability from the centre towards the periphery of the range.  相似文献

The European catfish, Silurus glanis, is native to eastern Europe and western Asia and is among the largest freshwater fish in the world. Despite its increasing economic importance and its frequent introductions, the ecology and life-history of this species is poorly known due to the difficulty of sampling such a large species in large rivers and standing waters. Our study provides the first data on age and growth of this species in Turkish waters, where it is native. We report the length-weight relationships and age and size structure of this population, which were significantly different between females and males. A marginal increment analysis indicated that annulus formation occurred between May and June. The estimates of three growth functions (von Bertalanffy, logistic and Gompertz) are reported, with the von Bertalanffy growth providing a better fit and more realistic parameter estimates. Growth rates were significantly higher in males than in females and were overall higher compared to other native populations but similar to introduced populations of similar latitude.  相似文献

This paper records the unusual occurrence of the blue whiting ( Micromesistius poutassou ) from inshore waters of the west coast of Scotland from 1971 to 1974. The fish were O and I-group and appeared to migrate into the area during the autumn and winter months. Data on growth, length for weight relationships and feeding are described.  相似文献

A ten-year study of the population dynamics of the sea-snail, Liparis lipuris , in the Bristol Channel, England is reported. This small fish which only lives for 1 year undertakes a regular seasonal migration from birth in marine waters into the estuary from which it retreats during the winter to return to the spawning grounds by early spring. At Hinkley Point, Somerset (salinity 22–3O%), abundance has been shown to be negatively correlated with water temperature presumably because of the avoidance of warmer inshore waters during mild winters. When the temperature effect is removed from the data the peak winter abundance of the population was found to have a coefficient of variation of only 27%. For a population which only comprises of age group individuals, this shows a remarkable stability. No statistically significant relationship was found between the abundance of sea-snail and either their predators or prey. However, there were indications of a negative relationship with the abundance of whiting, Merlangius merlangus , which was the most abundant predator. We conclude that the population of a short-lived marine fish living within a physically variable marine environment can be constrained within tight limits. Further. sea-snail reproductive success has been independent of variation in local physical conditions.  相似文献

It is hypothesized that fish larvae undertake vertical movements in estuarine waters. To test this hypothesis, a sampling period was selected during times when many spring‐spawning fish reach maximum abundance in coastal waters so that spring and summer variations in larval fish assemblages could be determined in the Yangtze River estuary. Six oceanographic surveys were conducted across the salinity gradient of an inshore (freshwater) and offshore area (brackish intersection) during spring (May) and summer (August) between 2010 and 2012. The fish larval community was dominated by species of Engraulidae, Gobiidae, Champsodontidae and Mugilidae. The pre‐flexion and flexion larval stages of euryhaline marine species, which are dependent on estuaries as nursery areas, were common. The brackish and marine larval assemblage was the most abundant with taxa such as Coilia mystus and Engraulis japonicus accounting for more than 57.3% of the total catch. Spatial differences in the taxonomic composition of larval fish assemblages were evident between the inshore and offshore areas. Additionally, the Yangtze River runoff regulatory functions as affected by the Three Gorges Reservoir operational mode (hydrological alternating operations) showed weak influences on fish and habitat environments. Low salinities from high freshwater inflow limited bay anchovy production in the inshore area.  相似文献

The life history strategy of sandy sprat (whitebait) Hyperlophus vittatus was compared to those of other clupeoids found in the Indo‐Pacific and southern Australia. Hyperlophus vittatus is a small (100 mm, fork‐length, FL) pelagic species that spawns in inshore waters of southern Australia. The average growth rate for larvae (20.1–27.6 mm, total length, TL) inside the Coorong Lagoon was 0.12 mm day−1. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were k = 1.83 year−1 and L = 78.10 mm and the oldest fish was ∼4 years of age. Males and females attained 50% sexual maturity at 59 and 58 mm FL, respectively, and all individuals were sexually mature at lengths ≥75 mm, at ∼1.5 years of age. Macroscopic gonad staging showed the spawning season extended from October to February (spring and summer) and peaked during November. Mean egg densities were highest between September and November. Females produced batches of pelagic eggs at a mean frequency of 5 days and batch fecundities ranged between 743 and 5600 hydrated oocytes. The life history of H. vittatus is similar to those of larger, iteroparous clupeoids that occur in southern temperate Australian waters, e.g. sardine Sardinops sagax and Australian anchovy Engraulis australis, and dissimilar to those of small tropical clupeoids and the sympatric blue sprat Spratelloides robustus, which is semelparous.  相似文献

Age‐based analysis of the stoplight parrotfish Sparisoma viride was used to examine whether observed differences in their abundance and size structure among reefs in a cross‐shelf portion of the upper Florida Keys could be explained by variation in demographic rates. Annual and daily sagittal otolith increments were enumerated for 176 individuals collected from replicates of reefs in two strata, inshore and offshore reefs (2–6 m depth). von Bertalanffy growth functions fitted to size‐at‐age plots for each site were similar between reefs within each stratum (inshore and offshore), but differed between strata. Sparisoma viride on offshore reefs attained greater average standard length (LS) at age, greater mean asymptotic size and were longer lived than fish from inshore reefs. Fish on inshore reefs attained only half the maximum age observed on offshore reefs (4 v. 8 years, respectively). No terminal phase fish >4 years of age were found on either reef type. Estimates of mortality rates from age‐frequency data of collected fish revealed higher mortality on inshore reefs. Demographic variables obtained in this study were similar to published values for S. viride from Caribbean reefs but differed significantly from published values from reefs at a similar latitude (Bahamas), reflecting high demographic plasticity on both local and regional scales.  相似文献

Age and growth of Mediterranean albacore   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Estimated ages of 1136 individual albacore Thunnus alalunga (57–92 cm L F) from the Aegean and Ionian Sea ranged from 1+ to 9 years. Males grew faster and reached a greater size and age than females. No significant differences were found in the mean lengths at estimated ages between the two sampling areas. The von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted to mean lengths of estimated ages of individual fish and estimated growth parameters for the combined sexes were: L =94·7 cm, K =0·258, to=–1·354 years. Significant differences were found when the Mediterranean albacore growth parameters were compared with those determined for Atlantic Ocean albacore. It is not possible to determine if the differences in growth rates for the two populations are phenotypic or genotypic at the present time.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Littorina nigrolineata Gray on a moderately sheltered boulder shore was characterized by an almost constant mortality rate of post-juvenile snails both within and between years. Cohorts of post-juvenile snails had a “half life” of about 5 months. Juvenile snails had higher mortality rates than post-juveniles. Mortality rate was independent of size in post-juveniles. The population of post-juvenile snails fluctuated only about two-fold during the 3 yr of study. Maxima of population size occurred each September as a result of an autumnal pulse of recruitment into the post-juvenile size classes. These recruits originated from eggs laid in the summer of the previous year. The size-frequency structure of the population lacked well defined modes except during the spring and summer when the pulse of recruits formed a distinct mode, which later disappeared due to growth and mortality of the recruits. Oviposition continued throughout the year with a pulse in summer. Newly laid eggs took 4–7 wk to hatch. The hatchlings had a mean shell height of 0.5 mm and were estimated to take 6–9 months to grow to a shell height of about 4 mm. Growth increments over periods of 3 months. estimated from tagged cohorts of snails ranging from 3 to 16 mm, released on a stone jetty, revealed seasonal and size-specific changes in growth rate. Growth rate was significantly lower between December and March than at other times of the year. Seasonal differences in growth rate did not, however, significantly affect the yearly size increments of snails hatching in summer or winter. Growth increments did not decline linearly with increasing body size, as is assumed by the von Bertalanffy growth model, but increased to a maximum at about 6–7 mm shell height. Beyond the maximum, the growth increments decreased linearly with increasing shell height. This non-linearity caused an inflexion in the growth curve, so that the shell height. This non-linearity caused an inflexion in the and 12.4 mm by the von Bertalanffy growth curve. The deviation from the von Bertalanffy growth model was possibly due to departures from the assumptions that the assimilation rate is proportional to the square of a linear size dimension and that the metabolic rate is proportional to the cube of the same dimension. A von Bertalanffy growth curve, fitted to growth increments measured from “growth checks” on tagged snails on the boulder shore, predicted slightly faster growth rates than the von Bertalanffy growth curve fitted to increments of mean cohort size on the stone jetty. The closeness of the two curves, however, suggested that both methods of measuring growth increments were tolerably accurate.  相似文献

Pearl perch, Glaucosoma buergeri Richardson 1845, from deeper waters (> 100 m depth) on the continental shelf of north-western Australia were aged by examining transverse sections of their sagittal otoliths. Ages were assigned based on counts of alternating opaque and translucent zones (annuli). Otolith length and breadth (width) increased linearly with fish length, whereas otolith weight increased linearly with fish age. The continuous growth of the otoliths provides some evidence that the opaque and translucent zones used to estimate age in this study are formed on a regular basis. Parameters of the length–weight relationship were estimated, along with parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function. The generalised von Bertalanffy growth function (total length-at-age, both sexes combined) for G. buergeri was L t=512.7 (1 – e–0.139( + 0.89)). There was no significant differential growth between the sexes in observed length-at-age. The oldest individual found was a male G. buergeri estimated to be 26 years of age. The annual instantaneous rate of natural mortality ( M ) was estimated to be 0.14. The slow growth, long life and low natural mortality rate indicate that G. buergeri is vulnerable to overfishing and that harvest strategies for this species should be conservative, given its low production potential.  相似文献

The ages and growth of longnose trevally (Carangoides chrysophrys), caught in the northwest Arabian Sea between April 2005 and September 2006, were investigated. Age and growth of 336 fish specimens were determined using sectioned sagittae otoliths. Annual opaque growth rings were formed between December and March, with the majority being laid down in February and March, coinciding with the spawning period and high water temperatures. Marginal zone or edge analysis was used to validate the annual deposition of the opaque zone in the otoliths. This species showed large variations in length‐at‐age, suggesting large growth variations among individuals of the same cohort. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth model differed significantly between the sexes, with males having larger mean lengths at age and reaching a larger asymptotic size. The von Bertalanffy growth models were TL (cm) = 73.34[1‐exp (?0.25 (t + 1.21))] and TL(cm) = 73.26[1‐exp (?0.24 (t + 1.20))] for males and females, respectively.  相似文献

The distribution, total length ( L T) frequency and diet of Patagonotothen guntheri are described from 14 bottom trawl surveys conducted on the Shag Rocks and South Georgia shelves in the austral summers from 1986 to 2006. Patagonotothen guntheri (80–265 mm L T) were caught on the Shag Rocks shelf from depths of 111 to 470 m, but no specimens were caught on the South Georgia shelf. Multiple cohorts were present during each survey and L T-frequency analysis of these cohorts suggests that growth was slow (von Bertalanffy K = 0·133). Evidence from stomach contents and acoustic data (2005 and 2006) showed that P. guntheri is primarily a pelagic feeder, migrating from the sea floor towards the surface to feed during daylight. The diet of smaller fish (<140 mm) was dominated by copepods, predominantly Rhincalanus gigas , whilst larger fish principally consumed the pelagic hyperiid amphipod, Themisto gaudichaudii and Antarctic krill Euphausia superba . Some larger fish also took benthic prey.  相似文献
