The anatomy of 4 species of pisiid clam sampled in Ethiopia,Zimbabwe and South Africa was studied. The new species Pisidiumethiopicum is described, including the Ethiopian form regardedearlier as a variety of P. casertanum (Poli). P. incomitatumKuiper is included in the genus Musculium as type species ofa new subgenus Pseudopisidium. On the basis of reproductive anatomy and radula, the poorlyknown genus Mainwaringia Nevill, 1885, is shown to belong tothe Littorinidae. The genus is represented by two species, M.leithii (E.A. Smith, 1876) from India to Vietnam, and a newspecies, M. rhizophila, from Malaysia to Hong Kong. Both occurin mangrove forests. The reproductive anatomy of M, rhizophilais described in detail, and it is interpreted as a protandroushermaphrodite, a condition unique in the Littorinacea. In theintersexual and female stages both closed pallial oviduct andopen prostate are present in the mantle wall, suggesting thatthese structures are not strictly homologous. The affinitiesof Mainwaringiaare discussed, and it is concluded that it maybe most closely related to Littorina s.s. (Received 30 May 1986;  相似文献

The life-cycle, growth characteristics and reproductive activityof Achatina fulica were studied in laboratory culture. Six generationshave been completed. Sexual maturity is reached as early as5 months of age, with a peak in egg production between 210–270days. Egg clutches contain 100–200 eggs which hatch synchronouslywithin a 24-hour period. The incubation period (days betweenoviposition and hatching) was determined exactly. The rangeof incubation times was 1–25 days, due to a variable degreeof ovoviviparity exhibited by the snail. The taxonomy of South African Siphonaria is reviewed. We concludethat nine species are valid. These are: S. anneae Tomlin, 1944;S. capensis Quoy & Gaimard, 1833; S. compressa Allanson,1959; S. concinna Sowerby, 1824; S. dayi Allanson, 1959; S.nigerrima Smith, 1903; S. oculus Krauss, 1848; S. serrata (Fischer,1807) and S. tenuicostulata Smith, 1903. Of these, Siphonarianigerrima Smith, 1903, has been incorrectly synonymized withSiphonaria carbo Hanley, 1858, which is not present on SouthAfrican shores. S. aspera Krauss, 1848 is reduced to a juniorsynonym of S. Serrata (Fischer, 1807). Shell characteristicsand mode of larval development are described for these nineSouth African species. All species deposit benthic egg massesand development may be either planktonic with swimming veligerlarvae (S. capensis, S. concinna and S. oculus) or direct, withcrawling larvae emerging from the eggs (S. anneae, S. compressa,S. dayi, S. nigerrima, S. serrata and S. tenuicostulata). Beginning around 1800, but primarily since the early and mid-twentieth century, the giant African snail, Achatina (Lissachatina) fulica Bowdich, 1822, has been introduced throughout the tropics and subtropics and has been considered the most important snail pest in these regions. In Brasil, specimens probably brought from Indonesia were introduced into the state of Paraná in the 1980s for commercial purposes (“escargot” farming) that were not successful. Achatina fulica is now widespread in at least 23 out of 26 Brasilian states and the Federal District, including the Amazonian region and natural reserves. Among the reasons for the species’ rapid invasion are its high reproductive capacity and the tendency for people to release the snails into the wild. Achatina fulica occurs in dense populations in urban areas where it is a pest in ornamental gardens, vegetable gardens, and small-scale agriculture. Also of concern is the damage caused to the environment, and potential competition with native terrestrial mollusks. It can also act as an intermediate host of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a nematode that can cause meningoencephalitis in people, and it may be a potential host of A. costaricensis, which causes abdominal angiostrongylosis, a zoonosis that occurs from the southern United States to northern Argentina. Management and control measures for A. fulica are under way in Brasil through a national plan implemented by the Brasilian government.  相似文献

Root colonization was studied in ten species of the Epacridaceaeat three sites in Victoria by morphological and cross-inoculationexperiments. The sites and genera chosen were Cranbourne [Epacrisimpressa Labill. andLeucopogon ericoides(Smith) R. Br.] andRye [L. parviflorus(Andrews) Lindley] on the Mornington Peninsula,and the Grampians[Astroloma conostephioides(Sond.) Benth.,A.humifusum(Cav.) R. Br.,A pinifolium(R. Br.) Benth,Brachylomadaphnoides(Smith) Benth.,E. impressa, E. impressavar.grandifloraBenth.andStyphelia adscendensR. Br.] in western Victoria. For morphologicalstudies, samples of roots from each species at each site werecleared and stained and examined microscopically. For cross-inoculationstudies, cuttings from each site were struck in potting mediuminoculated with soil from the same and other sites. The ericoidmycorrhizae in the roots of plants found at or grown in Cranbourneand Rye soils were similar. Both were significantly differentfrom the internal hyphae found in the roots of plants foundat or grown in Grampians soils, which were three times largerin diameter and formed dense coils which filled the host celland invaded adjacent epidermal cells. This suggests that morethan one fungus is involved in the relationships, that the MorningtonPeninsula sites had a different fungus from the Grampians siteand that host specificity is low. Arginine decarboxylase (ADC; EC 4.1.1.19 [EC] ) which catalyzes thesynthesis of putrescine, is involved in the responses of plantsto stress. The enzyme was purified 1,561-fold from rice coleoptilesby steps that included ammonium sulfate fractionation, gel filtration,ion-exchange chromatography and chromatofocusing. The purifiedenzyme had a pI of 5.3, a molecular mass of 176 kDa and appearedto be composed of three subunits of 63 kDa. A polyclonal antibodywas raised in a rabbit and the IgG fraction was purified fromserum. On Western blots the antibody recognized the ADC fromboth rice and E. coli. Immunoprecipitation with the ADC-specificantibodies allowed detection of radiolabelled ADC in extractsfrom aerobically and anaerobically grown rice seedlings thathad been supplied with a mixture of 14C-amino acids. Postingestive response to dietary imbalance of amino acids wasstudied in two species of terrestrial pulmonate gastropods Cepaeanemoralis and Achatina fulica using agar-based chemical diets.Both species showed preference responses to an experimentaldiet complete in all nutrients, and aversive responses to experimentaldiets containing excesses of methionine (in concentrations 1-10%dry wt of diet). Aversion to methionine was stronger in Achatinathan in Cepaea. One day's experience on a particular diet didnot significantly affect an animal's subsequent feeding responseon the same or different diets. Bennett and Smith (Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Societyof London B274:227-274; B334: 309-345) and Bennett, Smith andHeslop-Harrison (Proceedings of the Royal Society of London,B216: 179-199) published lists of nuclear DNA amounts estimatedfor 1612 angiosperm species collected from 163 sources datedbetween 1951 and 1986. Subsequently, interest in genome sizein angiosperms and its significance has continued, and manynew DNA estimates were published during 1986-1994. Their inaccessibility,and the flow of enquiries for such information, shows that afurther compilation is needed. This paper presents a supplementarylist of nuclear DNA C-values for 105 sources for 899 angiospermspecies not listed in the above-mentioned compilations, plus284 additional estimates for 208 species already listed by them.The data are assembled primarily for reference purposes, withspecies listed in alphabetical order, rather than by any taxonomicscheme. Some advantages and limitations of flow cytometry, nowincreasingly used to quantify DNA C-values in plants, are reviewed.Recent reports regarding the occurrence and extent of intraspecificvariation in genome size are also discussed. While some examplesare real, others reflect technical shortcomings. Work has begunto combine the genome size data compiled in this and the above-mentionedpapers into a unified data base, and to present the informationin separate lists, with species in alphabetical and systematicorders, respectively. The type species of the genera Mysella Angas, 1877, RochefortiaVélain, 1878, Rochefortula Finlay, 1927 and AltenaeumSpaink, 1972 are illustrated and discussed. A new genus Kurtiellais introduced for ‘Mysellabidentata (Montagu,1803) and other European species currently placed in Mysella.These species display a unique diagnostic character state inhaving the cardinal platform deeply receding to house the internalligament, along with an array of more general montacutid traits.At the species level, diagnostic characters are given for thetype species K. bidentata, and for other included species K.ovata (Jeffreys, 1881), K. pellucida (Jeffreys, 1881), K. triangularis(Watson, 1897) and K. tumidula (Jeffreys, 1866), based mostlyon characters of the prodissoconch and on shell outline. Montacutasimillima Smith, 1892, from St Helena, is considered a juniorsynonym of K. pellucida. The loss of labial palps in K. tumidulais interpreted as a further derived character, which does notconflict with the generic placement in Kurtiella. A revision of the Recent species of the genus Goodallia (Astartidae)is presented. Adult shell and prodissoconch morphology of allthe species are described and figured. In total, five speciesare recognized: G. triangularis (Montagu, 1803), G. pusilla(Forbes, 1844), G. macandrewi (Smith, 1881), G. micalii new species,and G. gofasi new species. G. triangularis and G. pusilla are widespreaddistributed in the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North Africa,and in the Mediterranean. G. macandrewi is restricted to thetype locality in the Canary Islands, while what has been calledG. macandrewi from the Mediterranean corresponds to an undescribedspecies here named G. micalii, distributed in the Central andEastern Mediterranean. A second undescribed species from offthe Atlantic Moroccan coast is named G. gofasi, and is knownonly from the type material of station B33 of the expedition CINECA CHARCOT III. We have determined the nucleotide sequence of Con A cDNA forconcanavalin A (Con A) from Canavalia gladiata using a plasmid(pCONAl) that was isolated previously [Eur. J. Bio-chem. (1988)170: 515-520]. This sequence contains a 870-bp open readingframe, a 63-bp 5'-un-translated region and a 99-bp 3'-untranslatedregion. DNA blot analysis suggested that Con A is encoded bya small gene family. In contrast to the case of canavalin, thenucleotide sequence and the genomic organization of Con A geneare highly conserved between C. gladiata and C. ensifor-mis. The species of Epimeniidae (Solenogastres: Cavi-belonia) arecompared and revised according to available type material. Structuresof particular interest include the differentiation of the foregut,the pharyngo-buccal nervous system and the blood cells. Sevenspecies are recognized in the family. The epidermal structure of the five species of ferns, Arthromeriswallichiana (Spr.) Ching., Drymoglossum piloselloides (Prest.),Drynaria quercifolia (L.) J. Smith, Lepisorus nudus (Hook.)Ching. and Pyrrosia nuda (Gies.) Ching., has been investigated.Fifteen types of stomatal structures have been identified ofwhich copolo-desmocytic and coperi-desmocytic are new types.Four more possible stomatal structures: ccpolo-peri-, codesmo-polo-,codesmo-peri- and duplodesmocytic, are suggested. Localizationof starch, insoluble polysaccharides, protein and lipids hasbeen examined histochemically in the guard cells, subsidiarycells and epidermal cells. In Drynaria starch plastids and plastidscontaining both starch and protein are present in guard cells.Starch plastids are present in the subsidiary cells of all speciesexcept in Arthromeris, whereas, they are present in epidermalcells of only Drymoglossum and Lepisorus. Granular or amorphousinsoluble polysaccharides (other than starch) are present inguard cells of all the species, in the subsidiary cells of Arthromeris,Drynaria and Pyrrosia, and in the epidermal cells of Pyrrosia.Except in Pyrrosia lipids are present in the guard cells. Subsidiarycells of Drynaria and the epidermal cells of Arthromeris andDrynaria show lipid bodies. The presence of plasmodesmata andectodesmata is demonstrated in the epidermal cells of Drymoglossum.  相似文献

A cDNA encoding the precursor for the 18-kDa protein of PSIIof spinach was expressed in Escherichia coli. When the celllysate was incubated at 7°C, the precursor was degradedby proteases of E. coli to a polypeptide of 18 kDa (P18) thatconsisted of the mature protein moiety plus the last four residuesof the transit peptide. P18 was able to reconstitute the water-oxidizingcomplex of NaCl-treated PSII membranes supplemented with the23-kDa protein. Moreover, P18 was cleaved by the prolyl endoproteinaseof spinach specifically at the Pro-12-Leu-13 bond, as was theauthentic 18-kDa protein. These properties of P18 indicate thatthe present expression system is potentially useful for studiesof the substrate specificity of the endoproteinase, as wellas of the structure-function relationships of the 18-kDa protein. Partition in aqueous dextran-polyethylene glycol two-phase systemwas used to isolate the plasma membranes from the alkalophiliccyanobacterium Spirulina platensis. The upper phase containeda colorless membranes obtained in relatively short time, 3–4h. This fraction had a different protein profile than that ofthe thylakoid fraction obtained in the lower phase. It did notcontain cytochrome c-oxidase activity, but retained characteristicMg2+-ATPase activity that is sensitive to vanadate, stimulatedby K+, and has a pH optimum near 8.5. Interspecific hybrids were obtained between Emilia coccinea(n = 5) and E. sonchifolia (n = 5). Except for quantitativecharacters such as plant size, head size, and leaf size, thediploid hybrid was similar to E. praetermissa (n = 10). Artificial polyploidization of the diploid hybrid resulted inan allotetraploid which is morphologically indistinguishablefrom E. praetermissa. The artificial tetraploid hybrid and E.praetermissa are also similar with respect to their karyotypesand their meiotic behaviours. Morphological and cytogenetic evidence suggest that E. praetermissaoriginated from a plant which is of hybrid origin and whichis similar to the synthetic tetraploid.  相似文献

Observations and experiments on several species of Musaceaein West Java and Central Sumatra showed that the species withpendent inflorescences are pollinated by macroglossine bats,principally by the long-tongued fruit bats, Macroglossus minimusand Eonycteris spelaea. Among the species with an erect inflorescenceM. velutina proves to be self pollinating, while M. salaccensishas sunbirds (Nectariniidae) and tree shrews (Tupaia) as pollinators.A discussion on pollination in this family is presented in thispaper.  相似文献
