The development of axillary buds, terminal buds, and the shoots extended from them was studied inHydrangea macrophylla. The upper and lower parts in a nonflower-bearing shoot are discernible; the preformed part of a shoot develops into the lower part and the neoformed part into the upper part (Zhou and Hare, 1988). These two part are formed by the different degrees of internode elongation at early and late phases during a growth season, respectively. Leaf pairs in the neoformed part of the shoot are initiated successively with a plastochron of 5–20 days after the bud burst in spring. The upper axillary buds are initiated at approximately the same intervals as those of leaf pairs, but 10–30 days later than their subtending leaves. Changes in numbers of leaf pairs and in lengths of successive axillary buds show a pattern similar to the changes in internode lengths of the shoot at the mature stage. The uppermost axillary buds of the flower-bearing shoot often begin extending into new lateral shoots when the flowering phase has ended. The secondary buds in terminal and lower axillary buds are initiated and developed in succession during the late phase of the growth season. Internode elongation seems to be important in determining the degrees of development of the axillary buds. Pattern of shoot elongation is suggested to be relatively primitive. Significances of apical dominance and environmental conditions to shoot development are discussed.  相似文献

The seedling of Nelurnbo nucifera is erect and its internodes are very short with four Alternately arranged floating leaves. During the juvenile stage, the shoot elongates remarkably and forms the horizontal rhizome. Each leaf grows out from the dorsal side of the node of the rhizome. There are two kinds of terminal buds in the juvenile shoot. (1) vegetative bud and (2) mixed bud. The axillary scale is the derivative part of the leaf. It forms an ochrea around the terminal bud. The winter buds on the annual shoot are all mixed buds. The vessels are absent in the rhizome and no cambium exists. During tile early growth of the rhizome, the rib meristems contribute mainly to the internode elongation. Later however, divisions are seen to commence in the parenchymatous tissue of the internode. As a result of these divisions the internode becomes elongated. The tuberization of the rhizome is built up from cell divisions of three kinds of tissues: (1) primary thickening meristems, (2) cells of the vascular bundles and (3) parenchyma of cortex. But, the growth in thickness of the rhizome seems to be chiefly due to the enlargement of parenchymatous cells.  相似文献

A study of the composition of long-branch terminal buds (LBTB) of Pinus banksiana Lamb. and the yearly periodicity associated with their formation, development, and elongation was undertaken. Each LBTB has lateral bud zones and zones of cataphylls lacking axillary buds. When present, staminate cone primordia differentiate from the lowest lateral buds in the lowest lateral bud zone of the LBTB. Ovulate cone primordia and lateral long-branch buds can differentiate from the upper lateral buds in any lateral bud zone. When both types of buds are present, lateral long-branch buds are uppermost. Dwarf-branch buds occur in all lateral bud zones. During spring LBTB internodes elongate, new cataphylls are initiated, dwarf branches elongate, needles form and elongate, pollen forms and is released, and ovulate cones are pollinated. During summer buds form in the axils of the newly formed cataphylls. By early fall the new LBTB are in overwintering condition and the four types of lateral buds are discernable. The cytohistological zonation of the LBTB shoot apex is similar to that of more than 20 other conifer species. Cells in shoot apices of pine are usually arranged in distinct zones: apical initials, subapical initials, central meristem, and peripheral meristem. Periclinal divisions occur in the surface cells of the apex; therefore no tunica is present. At any given time, shoot apex volume and shape vary among LBTB in various positions on a tree. In any one LBTB on a tree, shoot apex shape changes from a low dome during spring to a high dome during summer to an intermediate shape through fall and winter.  相似文献

The tillering phase in Hordeum bulbosum L. is terminated whenthe newly-formed axillary buds no longer emerge as tillers, but differentiate into dormant regeneration buds. The patternof development of the axillary buds differs during the tilleringphase and the post-tillering phase. During the former, accumulationof leaf primordia corresponds to the age of the bud, i.e., leafnumber per bud increases basipetally along the shoot. Duringthe post-tillering phase, leaf number per bud decreases basipetallyfrom the base of the future bulb internode. This transitionis brought about by an acceleration in the rate of accumulationof leaf primordia which is more sustained in the buds situatedcloser to the base of the bulb internode. These positional differencesin the morphogenesis of the regeneration buds are reflectedin their physiological responses during the relaxation of dormancyand activation of the buds.  相似文献

An investigation was made of the number of preformed organs in winter buds of 3-year-old reiterated complexes of the 'Granny Smith' cultivar. Winter bud content was studied with respect to bud position: terminal buds were compared on both long shoots and spurs according to branching order and shoot age, while axillary buds were compared between three zones (distal, median and proximal) along 1-year-old annual shoots in order 1. The percentage of winter buds that differentiated into inflorescences was determined and the flowers in each bud were counted for each bud category. The other organ categories considered were scales and leaf primordia. The results confirmed that a certain number of organs must be initiated before floral differentiation occurred. The minimum limit was estimated at about 15 organs on average, including scales. Total number of lateral organs formed was shown to vary with both bud position and meristem age, increasing from newly formed meristems to 1- and 2-year-old meristems on different shoot types. These differences in bud organogenesis depending on bud position, were consistent with the morphogenetic gradients observed in apple tree architecture. Axillary buds did not contain more than 15 organs on average and this low organogenetic activity of the meristems was related to a low number of flowers per bud. In contrast, the other bud categories contained more than 15 differentiated organs on average and a trade-off was observed between leaf and flower primordia. The ratio between the number of leaf and flower primordia per bud varied with shoot type. When the terminal buds on long shoots and spurs were compared, those on long shoots showed more flowers and a higher ratio of leaf to flower primordia.  相似文献

To clarify the timing of the differentiation of the first and second inflorescences in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), morphological changes on shoot apices during short day and low night temperature treatments were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. Axillary buds just below the first inflorescence (axillary bud 1) became visible when sepal primordia of the primary flower were differentiated. By this time, other axillary buds had already developed. Axillary bud 1 developed four leaf primordia, and then a differentiated inflorescence at its summit. The phase transition of shoot apices from the vegetative to the reproductive phase may therefore trigger the differentiation of axillary bud 1 which is destined to develop into extension crowns.  相似文献

The persistence of large epicormic shoots is one of the main factors that reduces timber quality and value in Quercus petraea. The early phases of epicormic shoot formation, i.e. the initiation of the epicormic buds, their survival and their proliferation over the years, are not clearly understood. In the present work, we studied the initiation of the axillary buds giving rise to epicormic buds and shoots, and followed their behaviour during the first 5 years using both scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Two types of proventitious epicormic buds have been identified. The first type has small axillary buds associated with the rings of bud-scale scars which are found at the base and tip of each growth unit. These buds are made of a terminal meristem surrounded only by scales; no leaf primordium is detected. During the second and third years of epicormic life, meristematic areas appear in the scale axil. Progressively, the meristematic areas organize into secondary bud primordia composed solely of the terminal meristem surrounded by scales. The second type of epicormic bud has secondary buds produced by a large axillary bud when this large bud either developed into a shoot or partially abscised. The epicormic potential in Q. petraea is characterized by a balance between the epicormic buds in apparent rest, enclosing meristematic areas and secondary bud primordia, and their mortality over the years. The effect of axillary bud age on the development and potentialfor growth of the bud into a shoot was studied in roses. Ageof the buds occupying a similar position on the plant variedfrom 'subtending leaf just unfolded' up to 1 year later. Withincreasing age of the axillary bud its dry mass, dry-matterpercentage and number of leaves, including leaf primordia, increased. The apical meristem of the axillary bud remained vegetativeas long as subjected to apical dominance, even for 1 year. The potential for growth of buds was studied either by pruningthe parent shoot above the bud, by grafting the bud or by culturingthe bud in vitro. When the correlative inhibition (i.e. dominationof the apical region over the axillary buds) was released, additionalleaves and eventually a flower formed. The number of additionalleaves decreased with increasing bud age and became more orless constant for axillary buds of shoots beyond the harvestablestage, while the total number of leaves preceding the flowerincreased. An increase in bud age was reflected in a greaternumber of scales, including transitional leaves, and in a greaternumber of non-elongated internodes of the subsequent shoot.Time until bud break slightly decreased with increasing budage; it was long, relatively, for 1 year old buds, when theysprouted attached to the parent shoot. Shoot length, mass andleaf area were not clearly affected by the age of the bud thatdeveloped into the shoot. With increasing bud age the numberof pith cells in the subsequent shoot increased, indicatinga greater potential diameter of the shoot. However, final diameterwas dependent on the assimilate supply after bud break. Axillarybuds obviously need a certain developmental stage to be ableto break. When released from correlative inhibition at an earlierstage, increased leaf initiation occurs before bud break.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Age, axillary bud, cell number, cell size, pith, shoot growth, Rosa hybrida, rose  相似文献

The organogenetic cycle of main-branch shoots of Nothofagus dombeyi (Nothofagaceae) was studied. Twelve samples of 52-59 parent shoots were collected from a roadside population between September 1999 and October 2000. Variations over time in the number of nodes of terminal and axillary buds, and the length, diameter and number of leaves of shoots derived from these buds (sibling shoots) were analysed. The number of nodes of buds developed by parent shoots was compared with the number of nodes of buds developed, I year later, by sibling shoots. The length, diameter and number of leaves of sibling shoots increased from October 1999 to February 2000 in those shoots with a terminal bud. However, extension of most sibling shoots, including the first five most distal leaf primordia, ceased before February due to abscission of the shoot apex. Axillary buds located most distally on a shoot had more nodes than both terminal buds and more proximal axillary buds. The longest shoots included a preformed part and a neoformed part. The organogenetic event which initiated the neoformed organs continued until early autumn, giving rise to the following year's preformation. The absence of cataphylls in terminal buds could indicate a low intensity of shoot rest. The naked terminal bud of Nothofagus spp. could be interpreted as a structure less specialized than the scaled bud found in genera of Fagaceae and Betulaceae.  相似文献

Adventitious shoot formation was studied with leaf, stem and axillary bud explants of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.). The shoot regeneration procedures were applicable for a wide range of cultivars and shoot regeneration percentages were high for all explant types. Using axillary bud explants, shoot regeneration efficiency was independent of the size of the bud and of its original position in the plant. In contrast, shoot regeneration from stem and leaf explants was strongly dependent on their original position on the plant. The most distal explants (just below the apex) showed the highest level of shoot regeneration. The adventitious shoot primordia developed at the periphery of the stem segment and at the base of leaf explants. In axillary bud, stem and leaf explants, shoot regeneration originated from node cells, located at the transition area between leaf and stem tissue. Moreover, a gradient in shoot regeneration response was observed, increasing towards the apical meristem.Abbreviations BA benzyladenine - NAA naphthaleneacetic acid  相似文献

The size (length and diameter) and number of leaf primordia of winter buds of Nothofagus antarctica (G. Forster) Oerst. shrubs were compared with the size and number of leaves of shoots derived from buds in equivalent positions. Buds developed in two successive years were compared in terms of size and number of leaf primordia. Bud size and the number of leaf primordia per bud were greater for distal than for proximally positioned buds. Shoots that developed in the five positions closest to the distal end of their parent shoots had significantly more leaves than more proximally positioned shoots of the same parent shoots. The positive relationship between the size of a shoot and that of its parent shoot was stronger for proximal than for distal positions on the parent shoots. For each bud position on the parent shoots there were differences in the number of leaf primordia per bud between consecutive years. The correlations between the number of leaf primordia per bud and bud size, bud position and parent shoot size varied between years. Only shoots produced close to the distal end of a parent shoot developed neoformed leaves; more proximal sibling shoots consisted entirely of preformed leaves. Leaf neoformation, a process usually linked with high shoot vigour in woody plants, seems to be widespread among the relatively small shoots developed in N. antarctica shrubs, which may relate to the species' opportunistic response to disturbance.  相似文献

The length and basal diameter of all lateral and terminal budsof vegetative annual shoots of 7-year-oldJuglans regia treeswere measured. All buds were dissected and numbers of cataphylls, embryonic leaves and leaf primordia were recorded. Each axillarybud was ranked according to the position of its associated leaffrom the apex to the base of its parent shoot. Bud size andcontent were analysed in relation to bud position and were comparedwith the size and number of leaves of shoots in equivalent positionswhich extended during the following growing season. Length andbasal diameter of axillary buds varied according to their positionon the parent shoot. Terminal buds contained more embryonicleaves than any axillary bud. The number of leaves was smallerfor apical and basal axillary buds than for buds in intermediatepositions on the parent shoot only. All new extended shootswere entirely preformed in the buds that gave rise to them.Lateral shoots were formed in the median part of the parentshoot. These lateral shoots derived from buds which were largerthan both apical and basal ones. A fate map for the shoot apical meristem of Zea mays L. at the time of germination was constructed by examining somatic sectors (clones) induced by -rays. The shoot apical meristem produced stem, leaves, and reproductive structures above leaf 6 after germination and the analysis here concerns their formation. On 160 adult plants which had produced 17 or 18 leaves, 277 anthocyanin-deficient sectors were scored for size and position. Sectors found on the ear shoot or in the tassel most often extended into the vegetative part of the plant. Sectors ranged from one to six internodes in length and some sectors of more than one internode were observed at all positions on the plant. Single-internode sectors predominated in the basal internodes (7,8,9) while longer sectors were common in the middle and upper internodes. The apparent number of cells which gave rise to a particular internode was variable and sectors were not restricted to the lineage unit: a leaf, the internode below it, and the axillary bud and prophyll at the base of the internode. These observations established two major features of meristem activity: 1) at the time of germination the developmental fate of any cell or group of cells was not fixed, and 2) at the time of germination cells at the same location in a meristem could produce greatly different amounts of tissue in the adult plant. Consequently, the developmental fate of specific cells in the germinating meristem could only be assigned in a general way.Abbreviations ACN apparent cell number - LI, LII, LI-LII sectors restricted to the epidermis, the subepidermis, or encompassing epidermis and subepidermis - PCN progenitor cell  相似文献

Buds of shoots from the trunk, main branches, secondary branchesand short branches of 10–21 year-old Nothofagus pumiliotrees were dissected and their contents recorded. The numberof differentiated nodes in buds was compared with the numberof nodes of sibling shoots developed at equivalent positionsduring the following growing season. Axillary buds generallyhad four cataphylls, irrespective of bud position in the tree, whereas terminal buds had up to two cataphylls. There were morenodes in terminal buds, and the most distal axillary buds, oftrunk shoots than in more proximal buds of trunk shoots, andin all buds of shoots at all other positions. The highest numberof nodes in the embryonic shoot of a bud varied between 15 and20. All shoots had proximal lateral buds containing an embryonicshoot with seven nodes, four with cataphylls and three withgreen leaf primordia. The largest trunk, and main branch, shootswere made up of a preformed portion and a neoformed portion;all other shoots were entirely preformed. In N. pumilio, theacropetally-increasing size of the sibling shoots derived froma particular parent shoot resulted from differences in: (1)the number of differentiated organs in the buds; (2) the probabilityof differentiation of additional organs during sibling shootextension; (3) sibling shoot length; (4) sibling shoot diameter;and (5) the death of the apex and the most distal leaves ofeach sibling shoot. The evolutionary trend and its ecological implications in sympodial and monopodial branching patterns has been investigated in 20 JapaneseAcer spp. through comparison of shoot tip abortion and terminal bud formation. The genus is divided into two species groups according to its branching pattern, one (6 species) predominantly exhibiting sympodial branching with frequent monopodial branching in short shoots (sympodial species), and the other (14 species) exhibiting only monopodial branching (monopodial species). The early ontogeny of leaf and bud scales is described. Despite the difference in branching patterns, the bud scales of terminal buds are essentially the same in having a leaf base developed to function as a protecting organ. In all the sympodial species, during the abortion of a sympodium shoot tip, one or two pairs of primordia were found to occur on the apex, and later wither. These primordia resemble bud scales of terminal buds in their ontogeny and morphology, and appear to be rudimentary. It is suggested that a rudimentary terminal bud develops together with the establishment of sympodial branching, and that sympodial branching has originated from monopodial branching. Based on this proposed evolutionary trend, it is suggested thatAcer has moved from less shady habitats into shady habitats with monopodial branching (advantageous for vertical growth) changing into sympodial branching (advantageous for lateral spread).  相似文献

Terminal meristems of Pisum sativum (garden pea) transit from vegetative to inflorescence development, and begin producing floral axillary meristems. Determination for inflorescence development was assessed by culturing excised buds and meristems. The first node of floral initiation (NFI) for bud expiants developing in culture and for adventitious shoots forming on cultured meristems was compared with the NFI of intact control buds. When terminal buds having eight leaf primordia were excised from plants of different ages (i.e., number of unfolded leaves) and cultured on 6-benzylaminopurine and kinetin-supplemented medium, the NFI was a function of the age of the source plant. By age 3, all terminal buds were determined for inflorescence development. Determination occurred at least eight nodes before the first axillary flower was initiated. Thus, the axillary meristems contributing to the inflorescence had not formed at the time the bud was explanted. Similar results were obtained for cultured axillary buds. In addition, meristems excised without leaf primordia from axillary buds three nodes above the cotyledons of age-3 plants gave rise to adventitious buds with an NFI of 8.3 ±0.3 nodes. In contrast seed-derived plants had an NFI of 16.5 ±0.2. Thus cells within the meristem were determined for inflorescence development. These findings indicate that determination for inflorescence development in P. sativum is a stable developmental state, separable from determination for flower development, and occurring prior to initiation of the inflorescence at the level of meristems.  相似文献

Summary Shoot preformation was investigated in buds of four clones of Fraxinus pennsylvanica var. subintegerrima (Vahl) Fern. at two sites in Manitoba in the second (1988) and third (1989) growing seasons after grafting. More preformed primordia were produced in terminal buds in 1989 compared to 1988 at each site. Both terminal and lateral buds at Morden contained significantly more primordia than those at Winnipeg. The numbers of preformed primordia were significantly different among clones. Clone 3 produced the most and clone 1 the fewest primordia in terminal buds. Despite quantitative variation, the pattern was similar among clones for terminal buds at each site and in each year. A similar pattern was evident for lateral buds at the Winnipeg site in 1989 but at Morden, clones 4 and 1 had the largest number of preformed primordia. Data from 1989 revealed that numbers of primordia were correlated with bud dimensions, parent shoot length, diameter and number of leaves, and location of the bud on the parent. Shoot dry weight was also related to these variables and revealed a non-linear increase in dry weight with shoot length. Multiple regression, with parent shoot length and location of buds along the parent axis as independent variables provided a reliable indicator of preformation in the crown. Although there is a genotypic component to preformation, variation between sites, years and crown locations suggests plasticity in bud development.  相似文献

In both Chamaedorea seifrizii Burret and C. cataractarum Martius each adult foliage leaf subtends one axillary bud. The proximal buds in C. seifrizii are always vegetative, producing branches (= new shoots or suckers); and the distal buds on a shoot are always reproductive, producing inflorescences. The prophyll and first few scale leaves of a vegetative branch lack buds. Transitional leaves subtend vegetative buds and adult leaves subtend reproductive buds. Both types of buds are first initiated in the axil of the second or third leaf primordia from the apex, P2 or P3. Later development of both types of bud tends to be more on the adaxial surface of the subtending leaf base than on the shoot axis. Axillary buds of C. cataractarum are similarly initiated in the axil of P2 or P3 and also have an insertion that is more foliar than cauline. However, all buds develop as inflorescences. Vegetative branches arise irregularly by a division of the apex within an enclosing leaf (= P1). A typical inflorescence bud is initiated in the axil of the enclosing leaf when it is in the position of P2 and when each new branch has initiated its own P1. No scale leaves are produced by either branch and the morphological relationship among branches and the enclosing leaf varies. Often the branches are unequal and the enclosing leaf is fasciated. The vegetative branching in C. cataractarum is considered to be developmentally a true dichotomy and is compared with other examples of dichotomous (= terminal) branching in the Angiospermae.  相似文献
