The host specificity of a chrysomelid beetle,Calligrapha pantherina Stål, from Mexico, was verified in the CSIRO quarantine facilities in Brisbane, Australia on 80 species of plants in 28 families, either closely related to Malvaceae or in families containing economically important species.C. pantherina oviposited and developed successfully on its preferred host,S. acuta, and less successfully onS. rhombifolia andS. spinosa, all of which are weeds in Australia. Aspects of oviposition, larval development, and adult feeding and longevity ofC. pantherina are described.C. pantherina was released in Australia during 1989 and readily established onS. acuta but established at only a few sites onS. rhombifolia.  相似文献

The biology of an undescribed weevil,Eutinobothrus sp., and its specificity toSida acuta, a serious weed in northern Australia, were studied in a quarantine facility in Australia. Sixty-eight plant species were screened and onlyS. acuta andS. rhombifolia could sustain populations ofEutinobothrus sp. Adults feed externally on the stems and oviposit in feeding scars. Larvae feed internally and pupate in the stem. Prepupae and pupae may aestivate in the stem and adults emerge with the onset of the wet season when new growth is evident.Eutinobothrus sp. was released in January, 1994 in the Northern Territory and has established.  相似文献

The host specificity ofCystiphora sonchi (Bremi), a promising biocontrol agent of the sow-thistles,Sonchus arvensis L.,S. oleraceus L., andS. asper (L.)Hill, was investigated. These are widespread, serious weeds in Canada and the United States. In the laboratory, 6 females produced up to 721 galls on 1 plant ofS. arvensis, and up to 245 galls on 1 leaf. A total of 59 plant species in 49 genera of the familyCompositae were tested.C. sonchi produced viable galls onSonchus species only, thus confirming European field records.C. sonchi was approved for release in Canada.  相似文献

Strains ofTephritis dilacerata Loew andT. formosa Loew from galls onSonchus arvensis L. andS. asper (L.)Hill, respectively, could be raised reliably in the laboratory only on their host plants. Ovipositing females of both tephritids select a narrow, but different, range of bud sizes. The hatching of the eggs of both flies is synchronized with the onset of rapid but elongation in their respective host plants. Because the growth characteristics of these 2Sonchus species are different, buds of equivalent developmental stages are different average sizes, and ovipositional behavior that brings about synchronization onS. arvensis is not adapted toS. asper and vice versa. Both flies occasionally laid into the flower buds of each others host plant as well asS. oleraceus L. In these cases the buds aborted or the larvae failed to complete normal development. However, both flies appear to be preadapted to the non-host plantSonchus species in this group and host records forT. dilacerata andT. formosa suggest the existence of “host races” attacking theseSonchus species, or alternatively, the frequent occurrence of ovipositional “mistakes” involving these plants.  相似文献

Closely related species of gall-forming aphids are often associated with a single host species. SixTetraneura species coexist on the Japanese elm,Ulmus davidiana, in Sapporo, northern Japan. This paper describes the probabilities of coexistence on macro- and microgeographic scales (i.e., on host trees and host leaves) and examines whether coexistence with conspecific or heterospecific galls on leaves or shoots has any effect on the fecundity of each aphid species using multiple regression. A Monte Carlo simulation showed that the frequency distribution of the numbers of species on individual host trees differed significantly from that expected from the null model. There were significantly positive or negative associations between species.Tetraneura radicicola andsorini always coexisted with other species on trees they infested. Multiple regression revealed that the coexistence of conspecific or heterospecific galls on individual leaves had no influence on the fecundity ofradicicola andsorini, but had a negative influence on that of sp. O. On average, radicicola andsorini produced a smaller number of offspring in galls than sp. O, and obviously consumed only a small part of resources available on the galled leaves. Evidence available suggests that although amensalism does arise between sp. O and other species, its influence in not so strong as to exclude sp. O competitively from theTetraneura community.  相似文献

Encapsulation and development of the endoparasitoid,Microplitis croceipes (Cresson), were studied in six atypical lepidopteran host species whose usual host isHelicoverpa zea (Boddie). The candidate hosts examined were: the fall armywormSpodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith); the beet armyworm,Spodoptera exigua (Hübner); the cabbage looper,Trichoplusia ni (Hübner); the greater wax moth,Galleria mellonella (L.); the Indian meal moth,Plodia interpunctella (Hübner); and the diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella (L.). BothS. exigua andT. ni were completely unsuitable forM. croceipes development due to the high rate of eggs that were encapsulated within three days after parasitism. Encapsulation inS. frugiperda included mainly parasitoid eggs and was first detected six days after parasitization at 25°C and two days at 30°C. Encapsulation inG. mellonella occurred only in the larval stage of the parasitoid. InP. interpunctella, parasitoid larvae reached the 3rd stadium, but none of them pupated. OnlyS. frugiperda andG. mellonella supported successful development ofM. croceipes from egg to adult. The percentage of parasitoids reaching the adult stage in these hosts was higher at 30°C than at 25°C (13% vs. 4% inS. frugiperda, and 21% vs. 3% inG. mellonella, respectively). However, these percentages were too low to substitute them as a more economical host for rearingM. croceipes. This biological information will be useful in additional laboratory studies directed toward reducing the rate of encapsulation (e.g., manipulation of host rearing temperature) to increase production ofM. croceipes on these hosts.  相似文献

Myrciamyia pterandrae (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae), a new galling species associated with Pterandra pyroidea (Fabaceae), an endemic plant species in Brazilian Cerrado, is described based on larva, pupa, male and female. M. pterandrae galls were collected in the municipality of Quartel de São João, State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Larvae were removed from the galls and pupae, and adults were obtained by rearing. The specimens were mounted on slides, and the diagnostic morphological characters were illustrated. M. pterandrae is compared to Myrciamyia maricaensis Maia, 1996 the unique, previously known species of the genus.  相似文献

Aphthona chinchihi Chen was collected in China feeding on leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.). Studies were conducted on its host specificity in the laboratory, using field collected adults and their progeny.Aphthona chinchihi can effectively complement the impact of the other natural enemies of leafy spurge established from Europe in the U.S.A. and Canada. The adults feed on leaves and shoots and the larvae, which cause the main damage to the plant, feed on the hypogeous portion of the plant, seriously stressing the plant and preventing its vegetative spread. The host range ofA. chinchihi was studied with tests on adult feeding and oviposition, larval survival and host suitability, using 40 plant species or varieties distributed in 12 families. The experiments demonstrated that it has a high level of specificity. This flea beetle completed its life cycle only on leafy spurge. Also, because of its ecological valence,A. chinchihi has a very good potential as a biocontrol agent in North America.  相似文献

The biology and host specificity of the aquatic grasshopper,Paulinia acuminata (De Geer) were studied in quarantine in Australia. Adults and nymphs fed on the leaves of salvinia (Salvinia molesta), water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and azolla (Azolla pinnata). Fifty-three plant species representing 38 families were exposed to adults and nymphs ofP. acuminata. Adult feeding occurred on 17 plants but nymphs failed to feed on 9 of these species in the presence ofS. molesta. In starvation trials, 14 plants (excludingS. molesta, P. stratiotes andA. pinnata) were attacked by adults, of which only 5 were attacked by nymphs. Heavy feeding occurred on strawberry (Fragaria xananassa) but no oviposition occurred even when the leaves were held in contact with the water surface. The life cycle ofP. acuminata was completed only onS. molesta, P. stratiotes andA. pinnata. Eggs deposited on water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) failed to hatch. Laboratory evaluation was supplemented with observations on the distribution and abundance ofP. acuminata on the Zambezi River system, Zimbabwe, during October 1984.  相似文献

Interspecific host discrimination by adults, and larval competition among the endoparasitoidsMicroplitis croceipes (Cresson),Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson,Cotesia kazak (Telenga) andHyposoter didymator (Thunberg) were investigated usingHeliothis virescens (F.) as the host. In ovipositional choice tests, the mean number of encounters and ovipositions for unparasitized hosts was not significantly different from the mean number of encounters and ovipositions for parasitized hosts for each treatment combination (P>0.05). Thus, none of the parasitoid species discriminated between host larvae recently parasitized once by a female of another species und unparasitized hosts. However, in all but two cases, females did discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts in which an early first instar of the first-attacking species was developing.Cotesia kazak andH. didymator did not discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by an early first instar ofM. demolitor. Larval competition among these parasitoid species was studied for three time intervals between the first and second species parasitization: 1) second species attack immediately (5–15 sec) after the first; 2) second species attack 24 h after the first; and 3) second species attack 48 h after the first. Time until egg eclosion was shortest forM. demolitor, thenC. kazak, thenM. croceipes, and longest forH. didymator. When the second parasitoid species attacked a host immediately after the first species, the species in which egg eclosion occurred first was the victor more frequently, except whenM. demolitor competed withC. kazak andH. didymator. With a 24 h delay between the first and second species to attack, the older first instar from the first parasitization usually outcompeted the younger first instar from the second attack. A first instar from the second species to attack generally outcompeted the second instar of the first species when the second parasitization had been delayed 48 h. Competiors were eliminated mainly by physical attack, butC. kazak andM. croceipes apparently also killedH. didymator eggs by physiological processes.  相似文献

Several factors that influence the activity of steinernematid and heterorhabditid nematodes against adult Japanese beetles were examined in the laboratory. The effect of nematode concentration on mortality of adult beetles was evaluated using a Petri plate bioassay. The adults were exposed to 1,000 to 10,000 infective stage juveniles (J3) ofSteinernema glaseri per 10 beetles with or without food for 24 hr after which they were held with food for an additional 6 days. The LC50s for males with and without food during exposure were 3,435 and 2,854 J3s/10 adults, respectively. The LC50s for mixtures of males and females with and without food were 5,228 and 1,762 J3s/10 adults respectively. Although mortality occurred during and shortly after exposure, significant additional mortality was observed 1–4 days following exposure. Exposure of males and females with food to 10,000 J3s/10 adults for 6, 12, 18 or 24 hr resulted in 47, 58, 72 and 77% mortality, respectively. Comparative activity ofS. glaseri, S. carpocapsae (All strain),S. feltiae (Biosys experimental cold adapted strain=bibionis),S. feltiae (Biosys experimental strain 27),Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, andHeterorhabditis sp. (Terceiran isolate) was evaluated against adult Japanese beetles using a 24 hr exposure to 8,000 J3s/10 adults. The most virulent species wereS. glaseri, S. feltiae (=bibionis), the Terceiran isolate ofHeterorhabditis andS. carpocapsae producing 55, 44, 36 and 34% mortality respectively. Our results indicate that adult Japanese beetles infected with entomopathogenic nematodes could serve as a mechanism for nematode dispersal.  相似文献

Many phytophagous insects have an ability to manipulate plant tissue and induce galls, but the mechanism is not yet fully understood. Some insects have multivoltine life cycles, and each generation induces galls on different plant species or different organs in the same host. Such host-use patterns are interesting study subjects to clarify the gall-inducing mechanisms of insects. We focused on a multivoltine and gall-inducing psyllid Stenopsylla nigricornis Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psylloidea: Triozidae), which is associated with Symplocos lucida Sieb. (Symplocaceae). Based on periodic field surveys in Kyushu, Japan, S. nigricornis is revealed to have a bivoltine life history. Then, we revealed that the spring generation induces galls on leaves, while the autumn generation does so on flower buds and overwintering leaf buds. We also analyzed phytohormones in normal plant tissue, S. nigricornis nymphs, and their galls. As a result, nymphs were discovered to contain much higher concentrations of isopentenyladenosine and its possible precursor, isopentenyladenosine riboside than plant tissues, strongly suggesting that the phytohormone is involved in gall induction by S. nigricornis. Because flower bud galls contained significantly lower concentrations of abscisic acid (ABA) than normal flower bud, the autumn generation nymphs are considered to regulate the ABA level and to promote the earlier opening of host flower buds.  相似文献

The host range of the knapweed nematode, Subanguina picridis (Kirjanova) Brzeski, under controlled environmental conditions was extended to include, in addition to Russian knapweed, Acroptilon repens (L.) DC., plant species within the Centaureinae, and Carduinae subtribes of the Cynareae tribe of the Asteraceae family. Examination of host response to nematode infection revealed that Russian knapweed was the only highly susceptible host plant. Diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa Lam.) was moderately susceptible, and other plants which formed galls were resistant to S. picridis.  相似文献

Two halticine flea beetles,Longitarsus echii Koch andLongitarsus aeneus Kutsch, occurring on the boraginaceous plantEchium plantagineum L. in the western Mediterranean region are potential biological control agents in Australia where the plant has become a weed (Paterson's curse). The adults of both species feed by making “shot holes” in the leaves. The larvae of both species attack the roots ofEchium, those ofL. echii feeding more centrally in the root than those ofL. aeneus which attack the outer cortex and rootlets. Both species are univoltine. The host restrictions of both flea beetles as adults and as larvae were tested using the criteria already established for theEchium leaf minerDialectica scalariella Zeller (Wapshere & Kirk, 1977). This testing established that it would be safe to introduce the 2 insects into Australia for the biological control ofE. plantagineum and they are now under quarantine.  相似文献

A method was developed based on multiple approaches wherein DNA and chemical analysis was carried out toward differentiation of important species of Sida complex that is being used for commercial preparation. Isolated DNA samples were successfully performed through PCR amplification using ISSR markers and degree of genetic diversity among the different species of Sida is compared with that of chemical diversity. For genetic fingerprint investigation, selected 10 ISSR primers generating reproducible banding patterns were used. Among the total of 63 amplicons, 62 were recorded as polymorphic, genetic similarity index deduced from ISSR profiles ranged from 12 to 51%. Based on similarity index, S. acuta and S. rhombifolia found to be most similar (51%). High number of species-specific bands played pivotal role to delineate species at genetic level. Investigation based on HPTLC fingerprints analysis revealed 23 bands representing to characteristic chemicals and similarity index ranged from 73 to 91%. Prominent distinguishable bands were observed only in S. acuta, while S. cordifolia and S. rhombifolia shared most bands making them difficult to identify on chemical fingerprint basis. This report summarizes the genotypic and chemotypic diversity and the use of profiles for authentication of species of Sida complex.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in 1992 and 1993 at Kaya, Burkina Faso, West Africa, in fields of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum).Striga hermonthica(witchweed) was sampled weekly using a square-meter metal frame. Concurrently, adult populations of the weevilsSmicronyx guineanusVoss andS. umbrinusHustache were sampled weekly using a Univac portable suction sampler to assess the synchrony ofSmicronyxwithStriga.χ2tests for independence of the populations ofSmicronyxandStrigaindicated a good synchrony of the active stages of the life cycle of the weevils with the period of occurrence of the witchweed. The Univac portable suction sampler method was also used to determine the degree of association betweenSmicronyxandStriga. There was a positive association between the weevil and the witchweed. The percentage ofStrigaplants bearing galls caused bySmicronyxwas determined on 39 occasions and galls were found in every field visited (n = 50). The mean galling percentage ranged from 1 to 84%. A search for alternate hosts was done by sampling weevil adults on weeds surrounding the farmers' fields. NoSmicronyxadult was caught on these weeds before the emergence of volunteerStrigaplants.  相似文献

Galls are neoformed plant structures created by cell hyperplasia and hypertrophy induced by a number of organisms, especially insects. After adult insects hatch, senescent galls may remain on the host plant and be occupied by a succession of fauna, the most important and dominant being ants. This study aimed at characterizing the ant fauna successor of stem galls induced by microlepidoptera in Microgramma squamulosa (Kaulf.) de la Sota (Polypodiaceae). Four collections were carried out in the municipality of Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The galls were packed in plastic bags and taken to the laboratory. Ants were euthanized and conserved in 70° GL alcohol and later identified. A total of 49 stem galls were collected and analyzed, 15 containing microlepidoptera galler larvae, one a parasitoid wasp and 33 without the microlepidoptera or parasitoid (67%). Twelve of these galls (39%) contained ants. Six ant species were recorded (Camponotus crassus, Crematogaster curvispinosa, Crematogaster sericea, Procryptocerus sampaioi, Tapinoma atriceps, and Wasmannia auropunctata), all native to Brazil. Ant occupation in M. squamulosa seems to be associated with senescent galls due to hatching of the galler insect, which leaves a hole that allows ants to colonize it, in other words, an opportunistic domatia. Senescent galls resulting from the death of galler insects do not seem to facilitate ant occupation.  相似文献

The biology and host specificity of Mecinus janthinus Germar, an oligophagous, univoltine stem‐borer of Linaria spp. are discussed. The results of feeding and oviposition tests with 38 species in 13 families and of larval transfer tests with four plant species are presented. They show that M. janthinus is restricted to the genus Linaria and does not develop on snapdragon Antirrhinum majus, an important ornamental in North America. The weevil is widely distributed in Europe. It accepts and develops normally on plants from the target North American toadflax populations. Therefore, it should be relatively easy to establish M. janthinus where the control of L. dalmatica and L. vulgaris is required. The release of M. janthinus in Canada and the USA is recommended.  相似文献

A dose-mortality technique was used to compare the pathogenicity ofNosema whitei for 4 stored products pests.Tribolium castaneum, T. confusum andOryzaephilus surinamensis were similar in susceptibility, whileT. anaphe was at least 100 times more susceptible. A possible explanation for this difference is thatT. anaphe has a much longer developmental time (28 days at 25°C) than the other 3 species (20 days at 25°C). The host range was studied in another 8 species from 2 orders.T. brevicornis, T. destructor, andT. madens were all susceptible while the other species tested (includingTenebrio molitor, Palorus ratzburgi andPlodia interpunctella) were refractile to infection.  相似文献
