Assessment of patch quality by ladybirds: role of larval tracks   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
Gravid females of the two-spot ladybird, Adalia bipunctata (L.), were deterred from ovipositing when kept in petri dishes that had previously contained conspecific larvae but not conspecific adults, or the larvae of another two species of ladybird, Adalia decempunctata (L.) and Coccinella septempunctata L. The deterrent effect was density dependent and mediated via a chloroform-soluble contact pheromone present in the larval tracks. Similarly, gravid females of C. septempunctata were deterred from ovipositing by conspecific larval tracks and chloroform extracts of these tracks, but not by the tracks or extracts of tracks of A. bipunctata larvae. That is, in ladybirds the larvae produce a species-specific oviposition-deterring pheromone. In the field, the incidence of egg cannibalism in ladybirds increases very rapidly with the density of conspecific eggs or larvae per unit area. Thus, in responding to the species specific oviposition deterring pheromone female ladybirds reduce the risk of their eggs being eaten and spread their offspring more equally between patches. 为探索松墨天牛防治的新方法,实验了鱼藤酮对松墨天牛产卵和取食行为的影响及鱼藤酮对松墨天牛5龄幼虫的触杀作用。结果表明,鱼藤酮对松墨天牛具有显著的产卵忌避作用和成虫取食的干扰作用。产卵忌避作用和拒食作用随鱼藤酮浓度的增大而增强,处理浓度为1 000 mg/L时,鱼藤酮对成虫的产卵忌避率为75.63 %,处理后12 h松墨天牛的选择性和非选择性拒食率分别为72.91%和69.50%。鱼藤酮对松墨天牛5龄幼虫的触杀作用不明显。因此,利用鱼藤酮防治松墨天牛,一方面可以通过抑制其取食减少松材线虫的传播;另一方面通过忌避产卵可减少下代虫口。  相似文献

Experimental evidence shows that oviposition in Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is deterred by the presence of conspecific larvae. A similar deterrent effect is also recorded when females are tested in an experimental set up that previously housed conspecific larvae. It is shown that an oviposition-deterring pheromone is associated with the abundant wax filaments produced by the larvae of C. montrouzieri.  相似文献

Summary Temporal changes in aphid abundance pose a considerable challenge to ovipositing aphidophagous ladybirds, as in order to maximize their fitness they need to synchronize their reproduction with the early development of aphid populations. Field census data and laboratory experiments were used to determine how ovipositing females of the two-spot ladybird, Adalia bipunctata (L.), assess whether an aphid population is suitable for exploitation. In the field, two-spot ladybirds usually laid eggs well before aphid populations peaked in abundance. In the laboratory they showed a marked reduction in their reproductive numerical response in the presence of larvae of their own species but not of other aphidophagous ladybirds. At the highest aphid density this was not a consequence of competition for food between larvae and ovipositing females. In the presence of conspecific larvae gravid females were very active and as a consequence more likely to leave an area, and when confined with other conspecific females or larvae laid fewer eggs and later than females kept on their own. The extent of the inhibition of egg laying is negatively correlated with the rate of encounter with larvae. Thus it is proposed that gravid females appear mainly to use the presence of conspecific larvae to assess the potential of an aphid colony for supporting the development of their offspring.  相似文献

The American serpentine leaf mining fly, Liriomyza trifolii, whose larva feeds on more than 120 plant species is well characterized by its high degree of polyphagy. Observations on the oviposition behavior by L. trifolii demonstrated that among cucurbitaceous plants, Momordica charantia is rarely attacked by L. trifolii. The methanol extract of M. charantia leaves strongly deterred the females from ovipositing on kidney bean leaves treated at a concentration of 1 g leaf equivalent extract/ml. Analysis of the polar fraction of the methanol extract of M. charantia leaves resulted in the isolation of a novel cucurbitane glucoside, 7-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3,23-dihydroxycucurbita-5,24-dien-19-al, named momordicine IV, along with another known compound, momordicine II. Momordicine II and IV deterred oviposition by L. trifolii significantly when bioassays were carried out on kidney bean leaves treated at 75.6 and 20.3 microg/cm2 leaf surface, respectively. There was no synergistic effect on oviposition deterrent when the two compounds were combined in their natural abundance.  相似文献

Females ofSpodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) with different feeding experiences during their larval development were tested for their ovipositional response to methanol extracts of larval frass and semisynthetic diets. The effect of the following frass, diet and diet component extracts was tested: (a) frass fromS. littoralis orAgrotis segetum larvae fed on a potato-based diet; (b) frass fromS. littoralis larvae fed on a wheat germ-based diet; (c) potato and wheat germ-based diets; and (d) potatoes and wheat germ. Ovipositing females without prior experience of the potato diet were deterred by extracts of: (1) larval frass from either species fed on potato diet; (2) the potato-based diet; (3) potato. Also females with experience of the potato diet during only a part of their larval development were deterred from oviposition by frass of larvae reared on the potato diet and by the diet itself. However, for females reared on the potato diet for their entire larval development, oviposition was no longer deterred by either of the three extracts listed above. Extracts of: (1) frass from larvae of either species reared on wheat germ diet: (2) the wheat germ diet; or (3) wheat germ did not significantly affect oviposition. Females with ablated antennae were still deterred by frass extracts from larvae fed on potato diet, when they had been reared on the wheat germ diet. In feeding experiments, larvae of larval stage one and of larval stage three-four reared on either of the two diets preferred to feed on the wheat germ diet. However, the preference was significantly stronger for larvae with no prior contact with the potato diet. The effect of larval experience on the loss of oviposition-deterring activity by extracts of larval frass, diets and diet components is discussed in view of induction and selection.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that the choice of oviposition sites in arthropods is affected by the presence of food for the offspring on the one hand and by predation risk on the other hand. But where should females oviposit when the food itself poses a predation risk for their offspring? Here, we address this question by studying the oviposition behaviour of the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii in reaction to the presence of its counterattacking prey, the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis. We offered the mites a choice between two potential oviposition sites, one with and one without food. We used two types of food: thrips larvae, which are predators of eggs of predatory mite but are consumed by older predator stages, and pollen, a food source that poses no risk to the predators. With pollen as food, the predators preferred ovipositing on the site with food. This might facilitate the foraging for food by the immature offspring that will emerge from the eggs. With thrips as food, female predators preferred ovipositing on the site without thrips. Predators that oviposited more on the site with thrips larvae killed more thrips larvae than females that oviposited on the site without food, but this did not result in higher oviposition. This suggests that the females killed thrips to protect their offspring. Our results show that predators display complex anti-predator behaviour in response to the presence of counter-attacking prey.  相似文献

To determine the effect of larval frass of Monochamus alternatus on oviposition preference of the female adults, three tests were performed in the laboratory. Individual females were provided with a frass-coated, Pinus densiflora bolt and an untreated bolt simultaneously and were allowed to oviposit for 24 h. They deposited a significantly smaller number of eggs on frass-coated bolts. The females supplied with frass-coated bolts deposited no eggs on them, indicating that the larval frass deterred the females from oviposition. When individual females were provided simultaneously with a pine bolt applied with a methanol extract of larval frass and another bolt applied with methanol alone, they deposited a significantly smaller number of eggs on frass extract-applied bolts for 24 h. These results suggest the presence of a putative oviposition deterrent in larval frass of M. alternatus. Each test was replicated 19-20 times using different females.  相似文献

Behavioural and electrophysiological responsiveness to three chemically different secondary plant substances was studied in larvae of Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). Three groups of caterpillars were studied that during their larval development were exposed to different rearing diets: an artificial diet or one of two host-plants, cabbage, Brassica oleracea, or nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus. In dual-choice leaf disc assays, caterpillars reared on cabbage were strongly deterred by the phenolic chlorogenic acid, the flavonol glycoside naringin and the alkaloid strychnine. However, behavioural plasticity was found in caterpillars reared on nasturtium or artificial diet in that these did not discriminate against chlorogenic acid. Caterpillars reared on the artificial diet were also significantly less sensitive to naringin and strychnine in the behavioural assay. Electrophysiological studies of the maxillary sensilla styloconica revealed that the deterrent neuron in the medial sensillum, but not in the lateral sensillum, of cabbage-reared caterpillars was more sensitive than the same neuron type of caterpillars reared on nasturtium or artificial diet. We conclude that (1) the diet-induced behavioural habituation to deterrents can at least partly be explained by chemosensory desensitisation of a generalist type of maxillary deterrent neuron; (2) behavioural cross-habituation to the three structurally diverse deterrent compounds can be traced back to cross-sensitivity for these compounds in the same gustatory neuron.  相似文献

Stages of Metaseiulus occidentalis sensitive to photoperiod induction of diapause were determined by transferring various stadia into diapause-inducing conditions, and rearing them until adult females could be scored for reproductive condition. When eggs were transferred to 10 hr light at 19°C from 24 hr light at 25°C and the mites reared to adults, 92 per cent entered diapause. When larvae and all subsequent stages were kept under the inductive conditions, 62 per cent of adult females diapaused. Mites transferred as protonymphs into inductive conditions yielded only 10 per cent in diapause, and mites transferred as deutonymphs or newly emerged females did not enter diapause.However, adult females reared from eggs at 19°C under 12 hr light (which is near the critical photophase of 11·2 hr at 19°C) showed an unexpected sensitivity to photoperiod. Some newly emerged females oviposited upon transfer to an 8 hr photophase at 19°C. Some then stopped ovipositing and apparently entered diapause; these females resumed ovipositing after intervals ranging from 34 to 100 days. This was termed ‘switching’ into diapause. Some females reared under a 16 hr photophase at 19°C ‘switched’ also upon transfer as adults to shorter photophases—either 8 or 12 hr at 19°C. Thus, ‘switching’ may be due to transfer to shorter photophases. Promptness of mating vs delayed mating allowed ‘switching’ to be more easily detected.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. In California, early instar larvae of the pipevine swallowtail ( Battus philenor ) develop at an accelerated rate when feeding in large groups compared with small groups due to a plant-mediated response to feeding group size. Larvae benefit from accelerated growth because the time larvae remain in early stages, where mortality is highest, is reduced. Occasionally, multiple clutches are laid on the same plant stem. Clutch size modification by females ovipositing on plant with previously laid clutches and the effect of kinship and group size on larval behaviour was examined. The direct and indirect interactions between clutches were investigated to determine if group size and time between clutch establishment affects the performance of early instar larvae.
2. Larger groups consume the young foliage more quickly and develop at an accelerated rate compared with smaller groups. Older foliage available to later clutches is an inferior food resource compared with younger foliage.
3. There was no evidence that females adjust clutch size in response to the presence of conspecific clutches.
4. Second groups of larvae readily joined previously established feeding groups. There were no observed behavioural differences between sibling and mixed-family groups.
5. The effect of a second group on the growth of the initial group was dependent on the size of both groups and the time interval between the arrival of the two groups.
6. Accelerated growth associated with larger feeding aggregations was absent when these groups were introduced to plants with previously established groups.
7. It is beneficial for ovipositing females to avoid plants with previously laid clutches because direct and indirect interactions with established clutches compromises larval performance.  相似文献

The transmission of the baculovirus of Oryctes rhinoceros, previously called Rhabdionvirus oryctes, was studied. O. rhinoceros adults became infected with the virus when kept in a mixture of sawdust and ground-up virus-killed larvae or together with other virus-infected adults. In the field, mated females were more frequently infected than unmated females. Adults developing from larvae that had survived exposure to various dosages of the virus were not infected. No virus infections occurred in larvae hatching from eggs surface-contaminated with the virus. Larvae hatching from eggs laid by virus-infected females very rarely were infected.In the O. rhinoceros population the virus is transmitted most frequently during mating, possibly when the uninfected partner contacts virus material excreted by the infected partner. The virus can be transmitted in a similar way when infected and healthy beetles feed together in palm trees. Beetles visiting larval breeding sites containing freshly virus-killed larvae can become infected. Virus-infected beetles can pass the infection to healthy larvae when visiting a breeding site.  相似文献

Methanol extracts of Gomphocarpus sinaicus, Pergularia tomentosa and Cynanchum acutum (Apocynaceae, sub-family Asclepiadoideae) deterred feeding of Spodoptera littoralis in a binary-choice bioassay. Analyses of extracts using high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection indicated that methanol extracts of P. tomentosa and G. sinaicus contained cardenolides, while these compounds were not detected in extracts of C. acutum. Activity-guided fractionation of the methanol extracts of G. sinaicus and P. tomentosa resulted in the isolation of six cardenolides: 7,8-dehydrocalotropin, calotropin and coroglaucigenin 3-(6-deoxy-β-allopyranoside)-19-acetate (frugoside 19-acetate) from G. sinaicus, and coroglaucigenin, 16α-acetoxycalotropin and calactin from P. tomentosa. The isolation of 16α-acetoxycalotropin was a new report from P. tomentosa. Each of the 6 cardenolides deterred feeding by S. littoralis, while two cardenolide standards, digoxin and digitoxin, did not affect feeding. Differences among cardenolides in their effect on feeding were associated with specific structural features. C. acutum is the only one of the three species tested that is known to support the development of S. littoralis, although the development of larvae was delayed. The observed feeding deterrent activity of the cardenolide-free methanol extract of C. acutum would suggest that compounds other than cardenolides are responsible for the deterrent activity. These compounds, although deterrent in a short-term feeding assay, might not prevent long term feeding, thus allowing the larvae to develop on the plant.  相似文献

Field-collected female goldeneyed lacewing (Chrysopa oculata) strongly avoided ovipositing on substrates exposed over 24 h to three of four lady beetle species tested, resulting in circa 3-fold higher egg deposition on control versus coccinellid-exposed substrates. Aphidophagous ladybirds of the Coccinellinae subfamily are deterred from oviposition in the presence of chemical cues deposited by conspecific larvae, therefore avoiding the detrimental effects of competition and cannibalism to their offspring. However, it is still unknown whether aphidophagous species from other Coccinellidae subfamilies similarly behave. Here, we investigate this question for species of the Scymninae subfamily. A GC‐MS analysis of Scymnus interruptus (Goeze) larval tracks shows that larvae deposit a cocktail of hydrocarbons containing at least five branched‐chain alkanes. Furthermore, our experiments on the oviposition behaviour of S. interruptus and S. nubilus (Mulsant) in the presence of conspecific larval tracks and of conspecific larval wax covering Scymninae larvae show that females do not refrain from ovipositing in the presence of these larval cues. We recommend that more attention is paid to the role of Scymnus spp. in the regulation of aphids because their oviposition strategy might strengthen aphid suppression in agrosystems.  相似文献

Egg masses laid by Spodoptera littoralis mated female moths were extracted by petroleum ether (PE), ethanol (E) and Ringer's solution (RS). Egg-wash extracts were evaporated and the weights of crude materials were obtained. Different aqueous concentrations were made. The amount of extracted material increased as the weight of eggs used increased and vice versa. Coating Nerium oleander leaves with aqueous egg-wash extracts prepared from S. littoralis egg-masses deterred the mated conspecific female moths from ovipositing their eggs on treated leaves, as well as causing a decrease in the total number of deposited eggs per female during the moth's life span. The highest deterrent effect on conspecific female moths to oviposit their eggs was obtained after treatment of N. oleander leaves with PE or E egg-wash extract. The deterrent effects of the tested egg-wash extracts was concentration dependant; an increase in the concentration of any extract caused an obvious decrease in the number of deposited egg-masses and the total number of laid eggs on the treated N. oleander leaves.  相似文献
