Basic haematological values in antelopes--IV. A comparison and concluding remarks

Comparison of mean erythrocyte counts, mean haematocrit values, mean haemoglobin content and mean corpuscular volume of the red cell is presented for 21 species of antelopes (four species being excluded because of the small number of animals investigated). A direct relationship of haematocrit values and haemoglobin content and an inverse relationship of red cell counts and mean corpuscular volume of the erythrocytes were noted. The significance of an increased total surface area for oxygen exchange is discussed and values obtained in the red blood picture are compared with those of domesticated animals (cattle, goat and sheep) taken from the literature. Mean leukocyte counts were found to be in the human range with the exception of two species, but significantly lower than in domesticated artiodactylids. Problems in assessing the general health, the age, the effect of diet and of environment in captivity are discussed. Problems of methodology, especially of blood sampling, are given comparing results in manually restrained and in sedated animals.     

A new outlook on body fluid viscosity and cell function: concluding remarks and discussion

The area neglected so far in the fields of clinical and theoretical haemorheology is that of interaction between viscosity and chemical reactions in the cells. The reintroduction of teinochemical principle opens entirely new doors for investigation both in vitro and in vivo. Effect of extracellular fluid viscosity on synthesis (i.e. lipids) and on possible enzymatic and catalytic functions influences our opinion that haemorheology has to go back to fundamentals.     

A few remarks on the morphogenesis of the larynx.

After having reviewed the principal theories regarding the development of the larynx the authors performed a study on the morphogenesis of the above structure using four horizontally- and sagitally-sectioned human embryos. The conclusion of a study of these sections is that the LC constitutes the primordium of the laryngeal vestibule. From its lateral margin, caudally (Stage 19, Carnegie System), the primitive ventricles begin to form, while in the final stages the EL extends caudally enclosing a small cephalic infraglottic area and therefore completely separating the IG from the LC. Such findings in our opinion would confirm a different embryological derivation of the laryngeal cavity above and below the glottis.     

International Code of Area Nomenclature

Biogeography needs a standard, coherent nomenclature. Currently, in biogeography, the same name is used for different areas of biological endemism, and one area of endemism is known by more than one name, which leads to conflict and confusion. The name 'Mediterranean', for example, may mean different things to different people – all or part of the sea, or the land in and around it. This results in ambiguity concerning the meaning of names and, more importantly, may lead to conflicts between inferences based on different aspects of a given name. We propose the International Code of Area Nomenclature (ICAN), a naming system that can be used to classify newly coined or existing names based on a standard. When fully implemented, the ICAN will improve communication among biogeographers, systematists, ecologists and conservation biologists.     

A few remarks regarding 421 cases of trigeminal neuralgia]

Referring to the treatment of 421 patients with trigeminal neuralgia, the authors indicate an early alcoholization or exheyresis in case of therapeutical failure of systemic conservative treatment. Such a management prevents transformation of the peripheral into central neuralgia. Emphasis is on more frequent treatment of neuralgia by dental surgeons.
