Larvae of the arctiid moth,Pareuchaetes insulata, from Florida fed on the leaves ofChromolaena odorata, a serious composite, alien weed in Natal, South Africa. In starvation test trials using 48 plant species,P. insulata completed its development onC. odorata andAgeratum houstonianum. Subsequent attempts to cultureP. insulata on these two plants was only successful onC. odorata. The biology ofP. insulata is similar to that of two other well studiedPareuchaetes species namelyP. pseudoinsulata andP. aurata aurata. Repeated defoliation ofC. odorata byP. insulata could contribute to its control as has been found withP. pseudoinsulata in Guam.Pareuchaetes insulata has been approved for release as a biological control agent ofC. odorata in South Africa.  相似文献

Feeding of Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata caterpillars caused the leaves of Chromolaena odorata to turn yellow. Leaf yellowing could not be induced either by artificial removal of leaves or by drenching the plant with a solution of excreta from P. pseudoinsulata caterpillars. Yellow leaves appeared tougher but had the same energy level as that of green leaves. The amount of nitrate-nitrogen was significantly higher in yellow leaves than green leaves. P. pseudoinsulata caterpillars prefer to feed on green leaves. When forced to feed on yellow leaves, they exhibit slow growth and high mortality. Defensive factors in plants attacked by insects seemed to prevent further infestation of plants. In the field, caterpillars on the yellow plants were found during both day and night whereas on green plants they appeared to feed at night and hide in the ground at daytime.  相似文献

Chromolaena odorata L. is a major weed of tropical plantations and pasture lands.Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros [Lep.: Arctiidae] was mass-reared and released to control the weed on the Mariana Islands of Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan in the western Pacific. One year following establishment ofP. pseudoinsulata on Guam, the weed was reduced 100% at 3 of 4 sites monitored with fixed quadrats. Seed production was prevented if defoliation occurred prior to the beginning of the flowering season. If defoliation occurred shortly after flowering began, the developing seeds were eaten byP. pseudoinsulata or there was a significant reduction in weight and germination of seeds that matured. Eighteen months after establishing on Guam,P. pseudoinsulata had defoliated approximately 25,000 hectares of the weed. This is the 1st report on the quantitative impact of any control agent forC. odorata, and though the long term effect of the insect is still unknown, these results are encouraging.  相似文献

Larvae and pupae of diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), were collected weekly for two years on unsprayed cabbage plots. Samples were taken to the laboratory and parasitoids that emerged were identified and their incidence determined. Parasitoids were active throughout the year and parasitism was high (reaching 90–100%) except in the winter months of June–August when it was low. Twenty one species were reared: the egg-larval parasitoidsChelonus curvimaculatus Cameron and Chelonus sp. (Braconidae); the larval parasitoidsApanteles eriophyes Nixon,Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov),Habrobracon brevicornis (Wesmael) (Braconidae) andPeribaea sp. (Tachinidae); the larvalpupal parasitoidsDiadegma sp.,Itoplectis sp. (Ichneumonidae) andOomyzus sokolowskii (Kurdjumov) (Eulophidae); the pupal parasitoidsBrachymeria sp.,Hockeria sp. (Chalcididae),Diadromus collaris Gravenhorst (Ichneumonidae) andTetrastichus howardi (Olliff) (Eulophidae); and the hyperparasitoidsAphanogmus fijiensis (Ferrière) (Ceraphronidae),Brachymeria sp.,Hockeria sp.Proconura sp. (Chalcididae),Mesochorus sp. (Ichneumonidae),Pteromalus sp. (Pteromalidae),Eurytoma sp. (Eurytomidae) andTetrastichus sp. (Eulophidae).  相似文献

Mixed populations of Aphthona lacertosa and Aphthona czwalinae were released at more than 50 locations in Alberta in 1997. Two and 3 years post-release, beetle populations were primarily A. lacertosa, with A. czwalinae forming less than 0.5% of the sampled populations. Beetle densities were moderate (10–70 beetles per m2) or high (>70 beetles per m2) at 14% and more than 60% of the sampled sites in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Larger beetles had greater instantaneous egg loads (r2=0.424,P=0.003). In 2000, the largest beetles were found at moderate density sites and there was a significant negative relationship between beetle size and the time taken to accumulate a degree day threshold of 1230 (for females: r2=0.678,P=0.001). Sites with the most rapid accumulation of degree days have the greatest potential for beetle population growth based on potential fecundity. Changes in leafy spurge percent cover, stem density, and canopy height from 1997 to 2000 were assessed across sites with low (<10 beetles per m2), moderate, and high beetle densities in 2000. Sites with high beetle densities had significantly greater reductions of leafy spurge within 5 m of the release point than sites with low beetle densities (P<0.017). Damage caused by the beetles at high-density sites was often visible as a halo-shaped patch of dead leafy spurge stems. The significant overall reduction of leafy spurge within release patches makes A. lacertosa a promising biocontrol agent for leafy spurge in Alberta.  相似文献

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) have been identified in six species of Arctiidae reared on Senecio and Crotalaria. These include senecionine, seneciphylline, integerrimine, jacobine, jacozine, jacoline, jaconine and a metabolite (C15H25NO5) from Senecio , and monocrotaline, trichodesmine and crispatine from Crotalaria.
The all-red aberration of Tyria jacobaeae (var. conyi) contained much less of the metabolite than normal examples of this species. Female Spilosoma lutea reared on the same plants of S. jacobaea contained markedly more jacobine and jacoline than die males.
Host plant relationships and secondary plant substances are discussed. It is suggested that the Arctiid moths' own deterrent secretions, directed against vertebrate predators, pre-adapts them for feeding on foliage likewise protected against large herbivores by toxic secondary plant substances such as cardenolides and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. These latter substances are more toxic to vertebrate than to insect herbivores, and their dual function of deterrent and insect aphrodisiac puts a premium on their sequestration and storage once a species has achieved the initial steps, and occupied the plant niche concerned. It is further suggested that the polyphagous habits of the Arctiidae result in a more equitable distribution of die secondary plant substances within the Mullerian complex concerned, thus providing a generalized warning message for the potential vertebrate predator.  相似文献

Effects of gall damage by the introduced moth Epiblema strenuana on different growth stages of the weed Parthenium hysterophorus was evaluated in a field cage using potted plants with no competition and in naturally regenerated populations with intraspecific competition. Gall damage at early stages of plant growth reduced the plant height, main stem height, flower production, leaf production, and shoot and root biomass. All galled, potted plants with no competition produced flowers irrespective of the growth stage at which the plants were affected by galling, but lesser than in ungalled plants. Gall induction during early growth stages in field plants experiencing competition prevented 30% of the plants reaching flowering. However, 6% of the field plants escaped from gall damage, as their main stems were less vigorous to sustain the development of galls. Flower production per unit total plant biomass was lower in galled plants than in ungalled plants, and the reduction was more intense when gall damage was initiated at early stages of plant growth. In potted plants with no competition, the number of galls increased with the plant vigour, as the gall insects preferred more vigorous plants. But in field plants there were no relationship between gall abundance and plant vigour, as intraspecific competition enhanced the negative effects of galling by reducing the vigour of the weed.  相似文献

Dichrorampha odorata (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) is a moth from Jamaica whose larvae bore into, and kill, the shoot tips of the invasive alien plant, Chromolaena odorata (L.) King and Robinson (Asteraceae). This study reports aspects of the biology of D. odorata, and also determined the host specificity (larval and adult no-choice trials) of the moth. Adults were short lived (ranging from 2 to 7 days), with females laying a mean of 15.4 eggs. Eggs took 9 days to hatch, larvae 20–23 days to develop and the pupal stage lasted 11–12 days, giving an overall lifecycle period of 41–45 days. Larval no-choice tests using 34 asteraceous test species indicated that only C. odorata could sustain complete development of D. odorata to adulthood, although there was slight initial boring 14 test species (plus chromolaena). Results from the adult nochoice trials, in which seven test-plant species were exposed to D. odorata, were consistent with those from larval trials, with larval damage, pupae and adults of D. odorata recorded from only C. odorata. This confirmed that only C. odorata is a suitable host for D. odorata in South Africa. Permission has subsequently been granted for the release of D. odorata in South Africa, thus making it the first shoot-tip attacking agent to be released against C. odorata. It is hoped that in the field, high levels of damage by the moth will reduce the height and therefore competitiveness of C. odorata, thereby contributing to the success of biological control of this plant.  相似文献

Actinote anteas from Costa Rica was screened as a biological control candidate forChromolaena odorata in South Africa. Preliminary starvation trials suggest thatA. anteas is species specific. There are seven larval instars and the life cycle is completed in 101–169 days. The culture died out after three generations possibly because of incompatibility with the form of the local species ofC. odorata or disease.  相似文献

A survey of the parasitoids of the Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee), in the Mariana Islands showed that few of the borers were parasitized. Parasitoids were reared from only 30 pupae out of more than 4 500 sampled. Three species of pupal parasitoids were found:Xanthopimpla punctata (F.),Brachymeria albotibialis (Ashmead) andTetrastichus? inferens Yoshimoto. No parasitoids were reared from mature larvae. The only egg parasitoid observed wasTrichogramma chilonis Ishii. During the month prior to the sweet corn harvest, which was the peak period of moth oviposition, about 40% of the egg masses had at least one egg parasitized. An average of about 35% of the eggs within a mass were parasitized.  相似文献

Photoperiodic responses among populations ofXanthium strumarium L. in eastern Asia from Vladivostok, USSR, to Hong Kong and Taiwan include a wide range of adaptation. Among indigenous populations of thestrumarium morphological complex, responses range from near day neutrality (Vladivostok) to approximately a night length requirement of 9.5 hr (Hong Kong). Introduced populations in Japan include a night length requirement of 9.75 hr in theitalicum morphological complex and of 10.25–10.5 hr in thechinense morphological complex. The range of photoperiodic adaptation is nearly as wide as among populations of North America.  相似文献

The moth,Pterolonche inspersa (Staudinger) (Lepidoptera: Pterolonchidae), is widely distributed in southern Europe, north Africa, Turkey and the former Soviet Union. It occurs in both thick and scattered stands of knapweeds in disturbed sites, usually on sandy and/or stony soil. Larvae bore in the roots of diffuse and spotted knapweeds (Centaurea diffusa De Lamarck andC. maculosa De Lamarck). There is one generation per year in northern Greece, and larvae feed in the roots for about 11 months during the growing season (August–September, to the following July–August). In the laboratory garden, emergence took place between the second half of July and the end of August, with peak emergence during mid August. In the field, adults were observed from early to late July. Female moths oviposited on rosettes during the first ten days of July and continued through the end of July. Eggs were laid singly or in groups of five or six, firmly attached to the leaves of the host plant. In the laboratory, females mated within 24 hours of emergence and the preoviposition period lasted 2.6±0.8 days. The oviposition period lasted 7.4±2.2 days and the average number of eggs per female was 142.2±59.2. The incubation period was 12±4.7 days; the pupal stage lasted 14.7±2.4 days; and females lived 15.8±2.4 days, while males lived 10.7±1.4 days. First instar larvae failed to survive on economically important Compositae in the generaCynara L.,Helianthus L.,Zinnia L. andCalendula L. (Dunnet al., 1989).  相似文献

We observed epizootics and behavioral alteration in the arctiid caterpillar Chionarctia nivea after infection by an entomopathogenic fungus, Entomophaga aulicae, in April at a riverbank in Kyoto Prefecture, central Japan. The density of arctiid cadavers infected with E. aulicae was 1.31 individuals/m2. The critically ill caterpillars crawled up the dead stems of grasses and herbs such as the common reed Phragmites communis and the Japanese mugwort Artemisia indica var. maximowiczii to die at and near the highest parts of the stems, while the healthy larvae usually wandered on the ground and fed on the leaves of small herbs. This behavioral difference could be caused by infection with E. aulicae to enhance dispersal of conidia by active discharge in Entomophthorales with the aid of wind and rainfall.  相似文献

The liana Morrenia odorata is a widespread plant of the South American Gran Chaco, where both indigenous and non-indigenous groups use it as a food for much of the year. The fruit is the plant part most commonly eaten but, with the exception of the roots, all the other organs are consumed, though the different ethnic groups vary in their preferences. The resource is prepared in various ways: either raw, in salads, boiled, or roasted. Non-indigenous settlers use only the fruit and seeds, with which they prepare several dishes, in-cluding “docajam,” a regional dessert made with the fruit. The indigenous population considers it to be a very wholesome food and, despite the loss of many elements of their traditional diet, this plant continues to be highly valued. Although it is a wild plant, it is protected and even cultivated by several ethnic groups.  相似文献

Abstract To investigate the seasonal adaptation strategies of Ophraella communa to new habitats, the effects and regulation mechanisms of photoperiod and temperature on the reproductive diapause in a population collected from Changsha, Hunan were examined. Adults showed obvious reproductive diapause, which was regulated by photoperiod and temperature. At 30°C, there was no adult diapause occurring under either long‐day or short‐day conditions; at 25°C the pre‐oviposition period was short and fecundity was high in adult females under L : D 16 : 8 h, whereas under L : D 12 : 12 h, a few females entered reproductive diapause; at 20°C under short‐day conditions, all female adults entered diapause. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged when the pupae and adults were transferred from long‐days to short‐days, but the day length influence was not obvious when they were transferred only in the adult stage. However, the fecundity dropped greatly no matter whether the photoperiod shifted to short‐days only in the adult stage or whether the shift occurred in both the pupal and adult stage. The fecundity was extremely low when photoperiod shifted from long‐days to short‐days in both pupal and adult stages. This was an indication that the pupal and adult stages were the photoperiod‐sensitive stage for adult reproductive diapause. This was especially true for the photoperiod in the pupal stage, which has a distinctly significant regulative effect on reproductive diapause. Additionally, this article also addresses the reason for different photoperiodic response patterns in reproductive diapause induction between the Changsha strain and the Tsukuba strain (Japan) of O. communa.  相似文献

Proteolytic activity from the guts of the lepidopteran larvae Spilosoma obliqua was studied in relation to the developmental stages. The activity was found to increase with the advancement in the age of larvae and decreased with the onset of pupation. Starvation of fifth instar larvae, which exhibited maximum proteolytic activity, led to an increase at 8 h and declined further. There seems to be a possible relationship between the availability of the food and secretion of the enzymatic activity. The optimum pH and temperature for the gut protease was 11.0 and 50°C, respectively. Incubation of the gut protease for 24 h at 37°C led to a decrease in 52% of the activity, whereas there was a decrease of 17% in the activity at 4°C. No evidence could be found for the existence of the protease as an inactive precursor. The alkaline properties of the digestive protease seem to have all the potential to be exploited commercially as a additive in various biological formulations.  相似文献

The florivorous weevil Anthonomus santacruzi is being released in South Africa to reduce the reproductive capacity of the invasive tree, Solanum mauritianum. Initiated to allay concerns about biotic interference, our study suggests that inflorescence-inhabiting spiders pose no risk to the survival and proliferation of A. santacruzi populations in the field.  相似文献

Malacophagous larvae of the fly Sepedon scapularis Adams were shown experimentally to be effective predators of three species of aquatic pulmonate snails tested as prey: Bulinus africanus (Krauss) an important intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium (Bilharz), Bulinus tropicus (Krauss) and the invasive species Physa acuta Draparnaud. Survival of S. scapularis larvae from instar to instar was negatively affected by the size of prey snails, since larvae tended to be asphyxiated by the mucous secretions of the snails, or by the larval hydrofuge hairs becoming entangled in snail faeces. In experiments to test the choice of S.scapularis larvae for different species and sizes of snails, B.africanus was significantly disfavoured compared with the other two snail species. Small snails (< 3 mm) were more frequently killed by all three larval instars of S.scapularis. First instars killed few, if any, large snails (> 7 mm), whereas second and third instars preyed effectively on all sizes of snails. Third instars killed significantly more snails than younger instars. For larvae offered only one species of snail as prey, the mean total number of snails killed per larva during its entire development was 49 B.africanus, 45 B.tropicus or 34 P.acuta. It is concluded that S.scapularis is potentially useful as a biological control agent for use against indigenous Bulinus and exotic Physa snails.  相似文献

Abstract:  In this study, the bacterial flora of Hyphantria cunea Drury. (Lep., Arctiidae) were investigated during three hazelnut seasons from 1998 to 2000. Four different bacteria were found in dead and living larvae. They were isolated and identified as Bacillus thuringiensis , Escherichia freundii , Micrococcus sp. and Streptococcus sp. Laboratory experiments carried out to determine the insecticidal activities of these isolates showed that E. freundii and Micrococcus sp. did not have any insecticidal effect on second – third instar larvae of H. cunea . However, B. thuringiensis and Streptococcus sp. had 56 and 38% effects, respectively. Crystals and spores from B. thuringiensis were also purified and the crystals, spores and crystals–spore mixture were tested separately against the larvae of H. cunea . It was found that the insecticidal activities of the crystals, spores and crystal–spore mixture were 37.5, 25 and 62.5%, respectively, on second – third instar larvae of H. cunea . These results indicate that the crystal–spore mixture has 6.5% more insecticidal effect than that of the vegetative cells of the B. thuringiensis isolate.  相似文献
