Larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Ypeunomutidae), cause severe economic damage to cabbage, Brassica oleracea L. variety capitata (Brassicaceae) and related vegetables in Thailand. Overuse of broad-spectrum insecticides for diamondback moth control is a serious problem and has obscured the contributions of indigenous parasitoids. Our objectives were to identify indigenous diamondback moth parasitoids in northern Thailand and to assess their potential for natural control. Six parasitoid species were reared from diamondback moth larvae and pupae collected in 1990 and in 2003-2004. These included the larval parasitoid Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov (Braconidae), a larval-pupal parasitoid Macromalon orientale Kerrich (Ichneumonidae), and pupal parasitoids Diadromus collaris Gravenhorst (Ichneumonidae) and Brachymeria excarinata Gahan (Chalcididae). Single specimens of Isotima sp. Forster (Ichneumonidae) and Brachymeria lasus Walker (Chalcididae) also were reared from diamondback moth hosts. C. plutellae was the dominant larval parasitoid and was often reared from host larvae collected from fields sprayed regularly with insecticides; parasitism ranged from 14 to 78%. Average parasitism by M. orientale was only 0.5-6%. Parasitism of host pupae by D. collaris ranged from 9 to 31%, whereas B. excarinata pupal parasitism ranged from 9 to 25%. An integrated pest management (IPM) protocol using simple presence-absence sampling for lepidopterous larvae and the exclusive use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or neem resulted in the highest yields of undamaged cabbage compared with a control or weekly sprays of cypermethrin (local farmer practice). IPM programs focused on conservation of local diamondback moth parasitoids and on greater implementation of biological control will help alleviate growing public concerns regarding the effects of pesticides on vegetable growers and consumers.  相似文献

Field surveys were conducted during 1990–92 to document the relative abundance of different species of parasites of the lepidopterous stem borersSesamia calamistis Hampson andEldana saccharina Walker in maize fields in southwestern Nigeria. Species of parasitoids detected on both stem borers included the larvalpupal parasitoidsSturmiopsis parasitica Curran (Diptera: Tachinidae) andBrachymeria feae Masi (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae), and the larval parasitoidDolichogenidea polaszeki Walker (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The braconidCotesia sesamiae (Cameron) was found attackingS. calamistis. The hyperparasitoidExoristobia dipterae (Risbec) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was detected on a pupa ofS. parasitica. Parasitic nematodes belonging toMermis sp. and/orHexamermis sp. were found infesting larvae of both stem borers. Overall, larval/pupal parasitization levels at Ibadan were low and ranged from 4.2 to 22.8% forS. calamistis and 1.2 to 13% forE. saccharina. Of the parasites found,S. parasitica was the most common, followed by nematodes. Four hymenopteran egg parasitoids were found attackingS. calamistis: Telenomus busseolae Gahan,T. isis Polaszek (Scelionidae),Lathromeris ovicida Risbec, andTrichogrammatoidea eldanae Viggiani (Trichogrammatidae). Egg parasitization ranged from 13.4 to 41.5%. The only egg parasitoid detected onE. saccharina wasTelenomus applanatus Bin and Johnson, which inflicted only 5% parasitization.  相似文献

Larvae and pupae of diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), were collected weekly for two years on unsprayed cabbage plots. Samples were taken to the laboratory and parasitoids that emerged were identified and their incidence determined. Parasitoids were active throughout the year and parasitism was high (reaching 90–100%) except in the winter months of June–August when it was low. Twenty one species were reared: the egg-larval parasitoidsChelonus curvimaculatus Cameron and Chelonus sp. Eight pesticides; methyl parathion, malathion (organo-phosphates), toxaphene (chlorinated hydrocarbon), carbaryl (carbamate), pyrethrin (plant derivative),Bacillus thuringiensis, nuclear polyhedrosis virus (Heliothis) (microbial insecticides), and 2,4-DB (postemergence herbicide) were evaluated at the minimum recommended field dose and reduced dosages for contact toxicity toBrachymeria intermedia (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae), Campoletis sonorensis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Chelonus blackburni (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Meteorus leviventris (Braconidae), Voria ruralis (Diptera: tachninidae), Chrysopa carnea (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae), andHippodamia convergens (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). At minimum field dosages, percent mortality of parasitoids and predators was>27%, for the chemical insecticides. Mortality from pyrethrin was <31%, in all cases and 0% for 5 of the 8 species tested. Mortality of parasitoids and predators exposed toB. thuringiens is and NPV was<4% while mortality from 2,4-DB was<7%. The toxicity of chemical insecticides to parasitoids and predators at reduced dosages in increasing order of toxicity was malathion > carbaryl > toxaphene > methyl parathion.  相似文献

A survey of the parasitoids ofIllinoia liriodendri (Monell) in northern California conducted from 1988–1990 revealed the presence of 12 primary and 14 hyper-parasitoid species. The most common primary parasitoid wasAphidius polygonaphis (Fitch), which was imported from the eastern United States in the 1970's and is now established throughout the area. This paper is based on 20 months survey and laboratory studies of the parasitoids ofSpodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lep.: Noctuidae) carried out in Cyprus in 1971–72. Regular sampling revealed the presence of 19 further macrolepidopterous members of the ecosystem, includingS. exigua (Hbn.),Heliothis spp. and “Plusia” spp. Attacking these were a complex of at least 37 named primary parasitoids and a single secondary parasitoid. The commonest were the ichneumonidHyposoter didymator (Thnb.) and the braconidsChelonus inanitus (L.),Meteorus unicolor (Wesm.) andMicroplitis rufiventris Kok. and notes on their hosts, hostplants and biology are given. Almost all of the parasitoids were polyphagous and this, together with a wide range of hostplants, appears to improve the carry-over of the parasitoids and permit for greater parasitism of the main pests,S. littoralis andS. exigua. The % parasitism is shown to vary greatly with the situation, being highest in unsprayed lucerne field and unsprayed market gardens, and lowest in potato fields and sprayed vegetable plots. Recommendations are made for possible reductions in crop spraying, permitting the growth of weeds, under certain conditions, mass-rearing and liberation of an endemic parasitoid (C. inanitus) and filling gaps in the parasite complex by the introduction of exotic parasitoids.  相似文献

Observations on the parasitoids of cotton bollworms in the Punjab were made during 1978 and 1979. One eurytomid hyperparasitoid,Eurytoma braconidis Ferrière was also recovered from the cocoons ofB. greeni. Endoparasitoids of Anomis privata larvae include five species in three families of two orders. In this work, two species of Hymenoptera Braconidae (Cotesia sp., Microplitis sp.), one species of Ichneumonidae (Mesochorus vittator) and two species of Diptera Tachinidae (Exorista (Podotachina) sorbillans, Timavia amoena) were investigated. Of the 261 larvae of A. privata examined, 32 had a parasite, so the rate of parasitism was 12.26%. Parasitism by taxon was the highest, at 10.35% (27 individuals), in Cotesia sp. in Hymenoptera Braconidae. Parasitoids of Braconidae and Ichneumonidae were larval parasitoids. A parasitic insect of Tachinidae was a larva–pupal parasitoid. Solitary parasitoids included Microplitis sp. in Braconidae and E. sorbillans in Tachinidae. Gregarious parasitoids included Cotesia sp. in Braconidae, M. vittator in Ichneumonidae and T. amoena in Tachinidae. There was also a multiparasitoid (T. amoena) and two superparasitoids (Cotesia sp., M. vittator). A larva of A. privata sought feed even after it was parasitized every parasitoid investigated in this study, so five species of parasitoids were all koinobiont.  相似文献

The effect of intercropping chickpea with coriander or linseed onHelicoverpa armigera Hübner egg and larval populations and on the rate of larval parasitism was examined. There were significantly moreH. armigera larvae per plot in the sole chickpea treatment than in the intercropped treatments. The reduction was not the result of a negative effect of the companion crops on the numbers of larvae attacking chickpea. Larval density on chickpea was higher in the intercropped plots than the plots of sole chickpea. The presence of the flowering companion crops did not result in either the attraction of otherwise uncommon parasitoids to the crop or an increase in the proportion ofH. armigera larvae parasitized byCampoletis chlorideae Uchida. The results suggest that chickpea is a more suitable host forH. armigera than coriander or linseed, and that the reduction in the density ofH. armigera larvae in the intercroped treatments was due to the lower number of chickpea plants in these treatments.  相似文献

Microplitis demolitor Wilkinson is an important larval parasitoid ofHelicoverpa armigera (Hübner) andH. punctigera (Wallengren) in Australia. The effect of host plant on parasitism of second instarH. armigera byM. demolitor was investigated in a glasshouse experiment. Parasitism was low (0%) on chickpea. Moderate to high levels of parasitism (22.4% to 75.4%) were recorded on sorghum, sunflower, maize, cotton and soybean. Three species of lepidopterous larvae were collected fromAmaranthus hybridus L. growing in field corn during 1975 and 1976 at Hastings, Florida.Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) was the predominant species in May.Spodoptera eridania (Cramer) was predominant in June andHerpetogramma bipunctalis (F.) in July and August. Nine native species of parasites, representing theBraconidae, Eulophidae, Ichneumonidae andTachinidae, emerged from these larvae.Meteorus autographae Muesebeck emerged from bothS. exigua andS. eridania. TheTachinidae, Winthemia rufopicta (Bigot),Eucelatori rubentis (Coquillett) andLespensia sp., emerged from mixtures ofS. exigua andS. eridania. Apanteles marginiventris (Cresson),Temelucha sp., andChelonus texanus Cresson emerged from bothS. exigua andH. bipunctalis larvae, andEuplectrus platyhypenae Howard andOphion sp. emerged fromS. eridania. All the species of parasites from the lepidopterous larvae that feed onAmaranthus hybridus are also reported as parasites ofS. frugiperda, a serious pest of corn. Incidence of parasites ofLymantria obfuscata Walker [Lymantriidae: Lepidoptera] was studied in Kashmir during 1983 and 1984. The only egg parasite reared wasAnastatus kashmirensis Mathur parasitising between 4.49 to 11.92 percent of eggs. From 15 study sites as many as 10475 larvae of different stages and pupae were collected and reared in laboratory.Exorista rossica [Tachinidae: Diptera] was recorded to parasitize upto 8.42 per cent of larvae compared to 0.89 percent byCompsilura sp.Tetrastichus sp. [Eulophidae: Hymenoptera] was observed to be most dominant of the 6 pupal parasites, accounting for 33.41 percent of the measured parasitism, followed byPimpla sp. [Ichneumonidae: Hymenoptera] andTheronia atalantae atalantae [Ichneumonidae: Hymenoptera] which parasitized 6.84 and 4.03 per cent of pupae respectively.Brachymeria intermedia Nees [Chalcididae: Hymenoptera] was recorded to parasitize upto 2.98 per cent whereasBrachymeria lasus Walker recorded for the first time in Kashmir was found to parasitize up to 2.01 per cent, but was not widely distributed in the State.  相似文献

We surveyed the parasitoid complex associated with four non-pest tephritid flies in Hawaii,Procecidochares alani Steyskal (on the Island of Hawaii), andEutreta xanthochaeta Aldrich,Phaeogramma lortnocoibon Asquith, andTrupanea dubautiae (Byran) (on the island of Kauai). The former two tephritids are deliberatelyintroduced biological control agents of weeds; and the latter two are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Ten species of hymenopterous parasitoids in six families were recovered from these four non-pest tephritids. Among these species of parasitoids, six were inadvertently introduced to Hawaii, includingEurytoma tephritidis Fullaway (Eurytomidae),Bracon terryi (Bridwell) (Braconidae),Habrocytus elevatus (Walker) (Pteromalidae),Euderus metallicus (Ashmead) (Eulophidae),Torymus advenus (Osten Sacken) (Torymidae), andEupelmus allynii (French) (Eupelmidae); and three were purposely introduced to Hawaii for classical biological control of economically important pests, includingEupelmus cushmani (Crawford),Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Cameron), (Braconidae), andDiachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead). The relative abundance of parasitoid species and percent parasitism varied with the tephritid hosts. Our findings indicate that future development and implementation of biological control programs against frugivorous tephritids or other pests should consider the potential impact of some of the parasitoids on deliberately-introduced weed control agents. Before we can fully assess the potential impacts of some of the purposely-introduced parasitoids on non-target tephritids, however, effects of the many vagrant parasitoids associated with the non-targets should be thoroughly investigated  相似文献

The processes maintaining the enormous diversity of herbivore—parasitoid food webs depend on parasitism rate and parasitoid host specificity. The two parameters have to be evaluated in concert to make conclusions about the importance of parasitoids as natural enemies and guide biological control. We document parasitism rate and host specificity in a highly diverse caterpillar-parasitoid food web encompassing 266 species of lepidopteran hosts and 172 species of hymenopteran or dipteran parasitoids from a lowland tropical forest in Papua New Guinea. We found that semi-concealed hosts (leaf rollers and leaf tiers) represented 84 % of all caterpillars, suffered a higher parasitism rate than exposed caterpillars (12 vs. 5 %) and their parasitoids were also more host specific. Semi-concealed hosts may therefore be generally more amenable to biological control by parasitoids than exposed ones. Parasitoid host specificity was highest in Braconidae, lower in Diptera: Tachinidae, and, unexpectedly, the lowest in Ichneumonidae. This result challenges the long-standing view of low host specificity in caterpillar-attacking Tachinidae and suggests higher suitability of Braconidae and lower suitability of Ichneumonidae for biological control of caterpillars. Semi-concealed hosts and their parasitoids are the largest, yet understudied component of caterpillar—parasitoid food webs. However, they still remain much closer in parasitism patterns to exposed hosts than to what literature reports on fully concealed leaf miners. Specifically, semi-concealed hosts keep an equally low share of idiobionts (2 %) as exposed caterpillars.  相似文献

Toxoneuron nigriceps (Viereck) (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) and Campoletis sonorensis (Cameron) (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) are solitary endoparasitoids of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae). They provide biological control of H. virescens populations in Southeastern US agricultural production systems. Field and greenhouse experiments conducted from 2011–2014 compared parasitism rates of parasitoids that developed inside H. virescens larvae fed on tobacco plants treated with and without imidacloprid. The parasitoids in our study did not have a similar response. Toxoneuron nigriceps had reduced parasitism rates, but parasitism rates of C. sonorensis were unaffected. Preliminary data indicate that adult female lifespans of T. nigriceps are also reduced. ELISA was used to measure concentrations of neonicotinoids, imidacloprid and imidacloprid metabolites in H. virescens larvae that fed on imidacloprid-treated plants and in the parasitoids that fed on these larvae. Concentrations were detectable in the whole bodies of parasitized H. virescens larvae, T. nigriceps larvae and T. nigriceps adults, but not in C. sonorensis larvae and adults. These findings suggest that there are effects of imidacloprid on multiple trophic levels, and that insecticide use may differentially affect natural enemies with similar feeding niches.  相似文献

Two parasitoids,Cotesia kazak (Telenga) and Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) have been successfully introduced into New Zealand to improve control of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), tomato fruitworm. C. kazak has spread throughout the North Island, but M. croceipes is restricted largely to its release areas in crops in the Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay regions in the East Coast of the North Island and in pine plantations in the central North Island. Rates of mortality of H. armigera from parasitism were studied in processing tomato crops where these parasitoids are a key component of an integrated pest management programme, and in sweet corn, lucerne and soybeans. C. kazak was the dominant parasitoid in tomatoes and soybeans. It emerged from small H. armigera larvae and usually killed the host before it caused major damage to fruit. M. croceipes emerged from larger host larvae than C. kazak. Death rates from parasitism of H. armigera larvae in tomatoes increased from less than 1% caused by native parasitoids prior to parasitoid introductions, to 25–45% in 1988 and 70–80% in 1996 following the establishment of both introduced parasitoids. M. croceipes was the most common parasitoid in lucerne and total mortality from all parasitoids was similar to that in tomatoes. Low rates of parasitism by C. kazak in sweet corn were attributed to the reduced penetration of the adult parasitoid into sweet corn fields and to the protection afforded by sweet corn when H. armigera larvae burrowed into corn cobs. The implementation of an IPM programme based partly on the effectiveness of these parasitoids has contributed to a decrease in insecticide applications to processing tomatoes.  相似文献

Abstract:  Surveys were carried out in 2001 in brassica-producing areas of Ethiopia to determine the geographic distribution and severity of diamondback moth (DBM) and occurrence of indigenous parasitoids. Principal component analysis was used to analyse the importance of nine parameters – DBM density, parasitism by different parasitoid species ( Oomyzus sokolowskii , Diadegma spp., Apanteles sp. and overall parasitism), cropping systems, pesticide use, frequency of pesticide application and altitude. A total of 194 brassica fields in 13 different areas were visited. Principal component analysis showed that the first two of the nine principal components (largely DBM density and pesticide use) accounted for 70% of the variation in the data set. Higher DBM numbers were associated with pesticide usage and higher overall parasitism with intercropping. Eight parasitoid species were recorded of which three species were important both in distribution and level of parasitism. These include Oomyzus sokolowskii (Hym., Eulophidae), Diadegma spp. (Hym., Ichneumonidae) and Apanteles sp. (Hym., Braconidae). Overall parasitism ranged from 3.6% to 79.5% with big differences between areas. Apanteles sp. and Diadegma spp. were largely confined to the south-western part of Ethiopia where insecticide use is minimal. Oomyzus sokolowskii is mainly distributed in areas of the Rift Valley and northern Ethiopia with relatively heavy insecticide use. This study indicated a huge impact of repeated insecticide treatment and agronomic practices on DBM severity and its parasitoids.  相似文献

Tetrastichus howardi (Olliff) preferred the lepidopteran hosts,Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Pyralidae) andHelicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Noctuidae) to their parasitoids,Xanthopimpla stemmator (Thunberg) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) andPalexorista laxa (Curran) (Diptera: Tachinidae). IfT. howardi had previously experienced parasitising a certain host, its preference for that host increased, but not significantly. When reared on a certain host, the preference for that host increased.T. howardi showed no preference to any particular age of its hosts.T. howardi was able to discriminate between parasitised and unparasitised hosts, initially preferring parasitised hosts, but two days later preferring unparasitised hosts.  相似文献
