The effects of gender and slaughter weight on carcass quality traits were studied in 114 suckling lambs from four genotypes (Suffolk Down, Merino Precoz Aleman, Suffolk Down × Corriedale and Suffolk Down × Merino Precoz Aleman) raised to either 10 or 15 kg live weight. The characteristics of hot carcass weight, commercial dressing percent and real dressing percent (based on empty body weight), ribeye muscle area, and back fat depth were increased by higher slaughter weight; hot carcass weight, ribeye muscle area and back fat depth were higher in male suckling lambs. Different tissue components (bone, residues) varied according to slaughter weight. The commercial yield of carcass cuts and the anatomical proportions of shoulder and leg components were affected by both genotype and slaughter weight. None of the genotypes showed clearly superior carcass traits.  相似文献

This study compares some etiological factors involved in the naturally occurrence of lamb scours in 18 Merino sheep farms randomly selected in the area of “La Serena” (Southwest Spain).

A lack of influence of some variables (flock size, type of facilities, type of breeding, lambing percentage, isolation of Campylobacter jejuni, Rotavirus spp., Coronavirus spp. and Salmonella spp.) on lamb mortality rate was detected. The opposite was true for cleaning of the lambing areas, organization of lambing periods, accumulation of lambs in the pens, high content of fat, protein and lactose in milk and low serum gamma globulin and total protein in lambs and ewes. Cryptosporidium spp. and Escherichia coli isolation showed a trend to be linked to the presence of diarrhoea. A positive correlation was found between serum total protein in ewes and serum gamma globulin in lambs. Thus, the measure of serum total protein in ewes before lambing would be a valuable indicator of the risk of lamb scouring and it would be useful to establish an adequate programme to prevent this condition in the farms of this geographical area.  相似文献

The “robust” australopithecines are often depicted as having large and powerfully built bodies to match their massive masticatory apparatus, but until 1988 the sample of postcranial remains attributed with certainty to this group was very limited. Almost nothing was known about the body of the East African “robust” australopithecine because taxonomic attribution of the postcrania was so uncertain. The body of the South African “robust” australopithecine had to be reconstructed from about a dozen isolated fragments of postcrania. Now a partial skeleton is attributed with confidence to the East African “robust” group along with several isolated bones. The South African sample has more than tripled. Analyses of this vastly expanded sample reveal that a large portion of postcrania attributed to “robust” australopithecines from Swartkrans Member 1 (35%) are from extraordinarily small-bodied individuals similar in size to a modern Pygmy weighing as little as 28 kg. These small elements include parts from the forelimb, spine, and hindlimb. About 22% of these Swartkrans 1 “robust” australopithecines are about the same size as a modern human weighing about 43 kgs and about 43% are larger than this standard but less than or equal to a 54 kg modern human. Approximately the same pattern is true for the Swartkrans 2 hominids, but taxonomic attribution is less certain. All of the Member 3 specimens are similar in size to the 45 kg standard. The partial skeleton of the East African “robust” australopithecine (KNM-ER 1500) has hindlimb joints that would correspond to a modern human of 34 kgs although the actual weight may be 5 to 10 kgs greater judging from shaft robusticity and forelimb size. The largest postcranial element attributed with some certainty to the East African “robust” australopithecine group (the talus, KNM-ER 1464) is about the same overall size as a modern human of 54 kgs, although its tibial facet is slightly smaller. Although many previous studies have hinted at the possibility that “robust” australopithecines had relatively small bodies, the new fossils provide substantial evidence that these creatures ranged from quite small to only moderate in body size relative to modern humans. These were the petite-bodied vegetarian cousins of our ancestors. Sexual dimorphism in body size appears to be greater than that in modern humans, similar to that in Pan, and less than that in Gorilla or Pongo, although such comparisons are of limited value given the small samples, poorly known body proportions, time averaging, and many other problems.  相似文献

Within the Asteridae (“Sympetalae Tetracyclicae”) two main developmental patterns can be distinguished as regards the formation of corolla tubes, namely “early” and “late sympetaly”. Since the character “ontogeny of sympetaly”, after intensive studies, proved to be valuable for systematic considerations, we now recognize two blocks of orders within the Asteridae (and related groups): the Asteridae A-block and the Asteridae B-block (Figs. 82 and 83). By and large this bipartition referring mainly to the corolla tube development corresponds well with major lineages indentified by recent molecular data (see, e.g., Chase et al., 1993). Asteridae A-block is characterized predominantely by “late sympetaly” the “early sympetaly” in Rubiales and Oleales can be interpreted as derived within this block or can be linked with that in Asteridae B-block. Asteridae B-block is uniform throughout in its “early sympetaly”. In this block it is a primitive character, as judged from its occasional occurrence in the choripetalous Cornales and Apiales (Apiaceae, Araliaceae, Pittosporaceae), which can be regarded as ancestral for block B.  相似文献

The transdiagnostic expression of psychotic experiences in common mental disorder (anxiety/depression/substance use disorder) is associated with a poorer prognosis, and a small minority of people may indeed develop a clinical picture that meets criteria for schizophrenia. However, it appears neither useful nor valid to observe early states of multidimensional psychopathology in young people through the “schizo”‐prism, and apply misleadingly simple, unnecessary and inefficient binary concepts of “risk” and “transition”. A review of the “ultra‐high risk” (UHR) or “clinical high risk” (CHR) literature indicates that UHR/CHR samples are highly heterogeneous and represent individuals diagnosed with common mental disorder (anxiety/depression/substance use disorder) and a degree of psychotic experiences. Epidemiological research has shown that psychotic experiences are a (possibly non‐causal) marker of the severity of multidimensional psychopathology, driving poor outcome, yet notions of “risk” and “transition” in UHR/CHR research are restrictively defined on the basis of positive psychotic phenomena alone, ignoring how baseline differences in multidimensional psychopathology may differentially impact course and outcome. The concepts of “risk” and “transition” in UHR/CHR research are measured on the same dimensional scale, yet are used to produce artificial diagnostic shifts. In fact, “transition” in UHR/CHR research occurs mainly as a function of variable sample enrichment strategies rather than the UHR/CHR “criteria” themselves. Furthermore, transition rates in UHR/CHR research are inflated as they do not exclude false positives associated with the natural fluctuation of dimensional expression of psychosis. Biological associations with “transition” thus likely represent false positive findings, as was the initial claim of strong effects of omega‐3 polyunsatured fatty acids in UHR samples. A large body of UHR/CHR intervention research has focused on the questionable outcome of “transition”, which shows lack of correlation with functional outcome. It may be more productive to consider the full range of person‐specific psychopathology in all young individuals who seek help for mental health problems, instead of “policing” youngsters for the transdiagnostic dimension of psychosis. Instead of the relatively inefficient medical high‐risk approach, a public health perspective, focusing on improved access to a low‐stigma, high‐hope, small scale and youth‐specific environment with acceptable language and interventions may represent a more useful and efficient strategy.  相似文献

Induced-fit configurational transitions in proteins can take many forms. In cases, we find small “closures” of a loop onto the substrate. In other cases, the structural changes triggered by a ligand involve large rearrangements that affect entire domains. The nature of these transitions is normally assessed by a visual analysis or in terms of simple local geometrical parameters, such as interresidue distances, backbone dihedral angles, and relative displacements between domains. This approach is limited and rather undiscriminating. In this work, we apply recently introduced ideas from macromolecular shape analysis to characterize the global shape changes accompanying “open closed” transitions in proteins. Here, we monitor two distinct properties simultaneously: molecular size and self-entanglements. The method is applied to some proteins exhibiting pairs of structurally different conformations (adenylate kinase, hexokinase, citrate synthase, alcohol dehydrogenase, triosephosphate isomerase, thioredoxin, and aspartate amino-transferase). The conformational change associated with these proteins is classified according to an order parameter that considers various molecular shape features. The results allow one to recognize, in a nonvisual fashion, the likely occurrence of local or global structural rearrangements. In addition, the technique provides an insight into folding features that may remain invariant during the configurational transitions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

During study of mother-infant interactions of Macaca fuscata, a low-ranking female was observed to use a stone to groom her infant. At times a twig or piece of chow was used in the same fashion. The grooming involved a circular movement of the object around the infant's eye. The use of the stone appears to fit recent definitions of tool-use. Suggestions are offered regarding the functions of this occasional behavior; however, because of the rarity of its occurrence no conclusion is offered.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Many advances have been made in our knowledge of the biology of foraminifera over the past several decades. Fine structural, biophysical, and molecular biological studies have shown that the most prominent components of their distinctive bidirectional granuloreliculopods are bundles of micro tubules linked by crossbridges to each other, as well as to membrane-bound organelles and the plasma membrane. the microtubules ratchet past each other as dynein transduces the free energy of ATP to produce pseudopodal movements. In spite of the fact that there are over 40,000 described species of living and fossil species of foraminifera, there have been many recent exciting discoveries of new species and groups. New casting techniques are providing us with greater understanding of the complexities and functional aspects of form in the group. Significant advances are being made in understanding the distribution and energetics of deep-sea forms. Larger and planktonic foraminifera are the hosts for a particularly diverse range of endosymbiotic algae, including dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, unicellular rhodophytes, and diatoms. Chloroplast husbandry also occurs. Significant research effort has been expended yielding us considerable insight into various aspects of the endosymbiotic phenomenon. A unified conceptual framework has been drawn to help us understand the life cycle options found in foraminifera.  相似文献

New neurons are added to two bilateral clusters of neurons in crayfish brain throughout their lives. These interneurons are associated with the olfactory and accessory lobes, areas of the brain that receive primary olfactory information and higher order inputs from the visual and tactile receptor systems. The rate of cell proliferation in these four clusters, revealed by BrdU labeling, is sensitive to the living conditions of the animals: individuals isolated in small spaces (impoverished condition) exhibit a lower rate of cell proliferation in comparison to their siblings living together in larger areas (enriched condition), although both groups were fed to satiation. Reduction in the rate of proliferation can be measured 1 to 2 weeks after the animals are subjected to the impoverished condition. Counts of the labeled neurons that survive after 4 weeks of subjection to the two conditions show that fewer new neurons survive in the brains of animals that have lived for 2 weeks in the impoverished condition in comparison to their siblings living in the enriched conditions. Factors such as surface area, depth of water, and social interaction can all play a role in determining both the rate of new neuron production and the incorporation of the new neurons into the brain of freshwater crayfish. The results indicate a high degree of neuronal plasticity in the crayfish brain that is highly sensitive to the conditions under which the animals are kept. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract: In algae different types of plastids are known, which vary in pigment content and ultrastructure, providing an opportunity to study their evolutionary origin. One interesting feature is the number of envelope membranes surrounding the plastids. Red algae, green algae and glaucophytes have plastids with two membranes. They are thought to originate from a primary endocytobiosis event, a process in which a prokaryotic cyanobacterium was engulfed by a eukaryotic host cell and transformed into a plastid. Several other algal groups, like euglenophytes and heterokont algae (diatoms, brown algae, etc.), have plastids with three or four surrounding membranes, respectively, probably reflecting the evolution of these organisms by so‐called secondary endocytobiosis, which is the uptake of a eukaryotic alga by a eukaryotic host cell. A prerequisite for the successful establishment of primary or secondary endocytobiosis must be the development of suitable protein targeting machineries to allow the transport of nucleus‐encoded plastid proteins across the various plastid envelope membranes. Here, we discuss the possible evolution of such protein transport systems. We propose that the secretory system of the respective host cell might have been the essential tool to establish protein transport into primary as well as into secondary plastids.  相似文献

The growth performance and carcass traits of two fat-tailed breeds (Chaal and Zandi) and their crosses with rams of a tailed breed (Zel) were compared. After weaning, the growth and feed consumption of male and female lambs fattened for 114 days were recorded. A total of 45 male and female lambs were slaughtered and the left side of the carcasses were cut into six pieces, and the lean meat, bone, subcutaneous and intermuscular fat were determined. Average daily gain and feed conversion ratio in crossbred lambs improved, but the differences with pure lambs were not significant. The average weight of shoulder, brisket and loin were higher in crossbred than pure breed lambs (P < 0.01). The percentage of protein in the carcass of Zel × Zandi lambs was significantly higher than Zandi lambs. The smaller size and lower weight of fat-tail in crossbred lambs were compensated by higher percentage of subcutaneous, intermuscular and internal fat. The fat-tailed breeds provided good quality lean meat in terms of lower percentage of intermuscular fat.  相似文献
