The isolated contributions of motor unit recruitment and firing rate variations to the median frequency of the electromyogram's power density spectrum were determined. Orderly stimulation of the cat gastrocnemius motor units via nerve electrodes gave rise to linearly increasing median frequency regardless of the action potential firing rate of the active motor units. Increase in the discharge rate of all the motor units resulted in nearly constant median frequency. It was concluded that the increasing average conduction velocity during motor unit recruitment is the major contributor to variations in the electromyogram median frequency. The possibility of using the median frequency as the index to identify the recruitment control strategies employed by various muscles during increasing force contraction is suggested.  相似文献

The recruitment characteristics of muscle selective nerve stimulation by a multi-contact nerve cuff electrode, as predicted by computer modeling, have been investigated in acute experiments on rabbits. A nerve cuff containing five or six dot electrodes was placed around the sciatic nerve in five rabbits. M-waves were recorded with wire electrodes from the lateral gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis anterior, and extensor digitorum longus muscles. The muscle recruitment performances of three contact configurations (monopole, transverse bipole, transverse tripole) were compared. The selectivity was quantified by the recruitment of two muscles (one extensor and one flexor) in response to a particular stimulus. The results showed that only in a few cases, transverse bi- and tripolar stimulation provided a better selectivity than monopolar stimulation. Neither of the two extensors, nor of the two flexors could be stimulated separately. In accordance with the results of the modeling studies, bi- and tripolar stimulation required higher stimulus currents than monopolar stimulation, whereas maximum recruitment and slopes of recruitment curves were lower. The rabbit sciatic nerve appears to be a less suitable preparation for reproducible selectivity experiments, due to the variability in the number and size of the fascicles and their position in this nerve.  相似文献

We investigated the firing rate of motor units in the vastus lateralis muscle in five healthy young men (mean = 21.4 yr, SD = 0.9) during a sequence of isometric constant-torque contractions repeated to exhaustion. The contractions were sustained at 20% of the maximal voluntary level, measured at the beginning of the test sequence. Electromyographic (EMG) signals were recorded via quadrifilar fine-wire electrodes and subsequently decomposed into their constituent motor unit action potentials to obtain the motor unit firing times. In addition, we measured the whole muscle mechanical properties during the fatigue task using electrical stimulation. The firing rate of motor units first decreased within the first 10-20% of the endurance time of the contractions and then increased. The firing rate increase was accompanied by recruitment of additional motor units as the force output remained constant. The elicited twitch and tetanic torque responses first increased and then decreased. The two processes modulated in a complementary fashion at the same time. Our data suggest that, when the vastus lateralis muscle is activated to maintain a constant torque output, its motoneuron pool receives a net excitatory drive that first decreases to compensate for the short-lived potentiation of the muscle force twitch and then increases to compensate for the diminution of the force twitch. The underlying inverse relationship between the firing rate and the recruitment threshold that has been reported for nonfatigued contractions is maintained. We, therefore, conclude that the central nervous system control of vastus lateralis motor units remains invariant during fatigue in submaximal isometric isotonic contractions.  相似文献

In this paper we present the modelling, design, and experimental testing of a nerve cuff multielectrode system for selective activation of fibres in superficial peripheral nerve trunk regions which is capable of activating fibres in physiological order. The multielectrode system consists of 45 platinum electrodes embedded within a self-curling spiral silicone sheet organized in fifteen longitudinal groups consisting of three electrodes spaced equidistally around the circumference of the cuff. Electrodes in the centre band acted as stimulating cathodes while the two electrodes of the same group in the two outer bands were connected together and corresponded to the position of a particular cathode, serving as anodes to block the nascent action potentials by membrane hyperpolarization. The interpolar distance was 6 mm on both sides, resulting in a total cuff length of about 20 mm. The cuff was constructed with a diameter to fit the size of the dog sciatic nerve. Preliminary animal testing of the nerve cuff was performed on the sciatic nerve of a Bigley female dog. In the 45-electrode stimulation system, biphasic cathodic first pulses with quasitrapezoidal-shaped cathodic and square anodic parts were delivered through the particular group of tripolar electrodes to effect both selective stimulation of motor axons within the gastrocnemius muscle fascicle, and differential block by membrane hyperpolarization. The test was repeated using rectangular cathodic first biphasic current pulses delivered monopolarly on the central electrode of the same group while connected anodes were replaced by a common anode situated elsewhere in the surrounding tissue. In both experiments an isometric torque in the ankle joint elicited by the gastrocnemius muscle was measured and compared. It was shown that tripolar activation with quasitrapezoidal stimulation pulses elicited an isometric torque with a peak value of 0.83 Nm in 65 ms after onset of delivering stimulating pulses in comparison to the monopolar activation with rectangular biphasic pulses where the peak of the same value was observed in 45 ms after onset. Thus, the multipolar cuff stimulating monopolarly provided an effective means of activating motor axons selectively within the gastrocnemius muscle fascicle, while more physiological recruitment of the muscle fibres was evident when stimulating tripolarly.  相似文献

Repetitive activation of a skeletal muscle results in potentiation of the twitch contractile response. Incompletely fused tetanic contractions similar to those evoked by voluntary activation may also be potentiated by prior activity. We aimed to investigate the role of stimulation frequency on the enhancement of unfused isometric contractions in rat medial gastrocnemius muscles in situ. Muscles set at optimal length were stimulated via the sciatic nerve with 50-micros duration supramaximal pulses. Trials consisted of 8 s of repetitive trains [5 pulses (quintuplets) 2 times per second or 2 pulses (doublets) 5 times per second] at 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 Hz. These stimulation frequencies represent a range over which voluntary activation would be expected to occur. When the frequency of stimulation was 20, 50, or 70 Hz, the peak active force (highest tension during a contraction - rest tension) of doublet contractions increased from 2.2 +/- 0.2, 4.1 +/- 0.4, and 4.3 +/- 0.5 to 3.1 +/- 0.3, 5.6 +/- 0.4, and 6.1 +/- 0.7 N, respectively. Corresponding measurements for quintuplet contractions increased from 2.2 +/- 0.2, 6.1 +/- 0.5, and 8.7 +/- 0.7 to 3.2 +/- 0.3, 7.3 +/- 0.6, and 9.0 +/- 0.7 N, respectively. Initial peak active force values were 27 +/- 1 and 61.5 +/- 5% of the maximal (tetanic) force for doublet and quintuplet contractions, respectively, at 80 Hz. With doublets, peak active force increased at all stimulation frequencies. With quintuplets, peak active force increased significantly for frequencies up to 60 Hz. Twitch enhancement at the end of the 8 s of repetitive stimulation was the same regardless of the pattern of stimulation during the 8 s, and twitch peak active force returned to prestimulation values by 5 min. These experiments confirm that activity-dependent potentiation is evident during repeated, incompletely fused tetanic contractions over a broad range of frequencies. This observation suggests that, during voluntary motor unit recruitment, derecruitment or decreased firing frequency would be necessary to achieve a fixed (submaximal) target force during repeated isometric contractions over this time period.  相似文献

Ability of muscle fibers to generate force is decreased when higher frequency of stimulation of motor units immediately follows lower frequency. This phenomenon called tetanic depression was found in rat medial gastrocnemius. However, it was not clear whether tetanic depression occurred only in rat muscle or it concerns all mammals. This study was conducted on motor units of cat medial gastrocnemius. Analyses were made at three successive trains of stimulation: 30 Hz, 20 and 30 Hz and again 30 Hz (the first pattern) or 40 Hz, 25 and 40 Hz and 40 Hz (the second pattern). In all fast units force generated within the middle tetanus was lower than force generated at the same, but constant frequency of stimulation applied earlier or later. The mean tetanic depression in 30 Hz tetani amounted to 10.9% for fast fatigable (FF) and 15.9% for fast resistant (FR) motor units, whereas in 40 Hz tetani mean values were 5.6% and 7.3% for FF and FR motor units, respectively. In slow motor units tetanic depression was not observed. These results proved the existence of tetanic depression in the feline muscle and indicated that its intensity depends on the fusion of tetanus. It has been concluded, that the tetanic depression is a general property of fast motor units in mammals.  相似文献

Muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV) provides indications on motor unit recruitment strategies due to the relation between conduction velocity and fiber diameter. The aim of this study was to investigate MFCV of thigh muscles during cycling at varying power outputs, pedal rates, and external forces. Twelve healthy male participants aged between 19 and 30 yr cycled on an electronically braked ergometer at 45, 60, 90, and 120 rpm. For each pedal rate, subjects performed two exercise intensities, one at an external power output corresponding to the previously determined lactate threshold (100% LT) and the other at half of this power output (50% LT). Surface electromyogram signals were detected during cycling from vastus lateralis and medialis muscles with linear adhesive arrays of eight electrodes. In both muscles, MFCV was higher at 100% LT compared with 50% LT for all average pedal rates except 120 rpm (mean +/- SE, 4.98 +/- 0.19 vs. 4.49 +/- 0.18 m/s; P < 0.001). In all conditions, MFVC increased with increasing instantaneous knee angular speed (from 4.14 +/- 0.16 to 5.08 +/- 0.13 m/s in the range of instantaneous angular speeds investigated; P < 0.001). When MFCV was compared at the same external force production (i.e., 90 rpm/100% LT vs. 45 rpm/50% LT, and 120 rpm/100% LT vs. 60 rpm/50% LT), MFCV was higher at the faster pedal rate (5.02 +/- 0.17 vs. 4.64 +/- 0.12 m/s, and 4.92 +/- 0.19 vs. 4.49 +/- 0.11 m/s, respectively; P < 0.05) due to the increase in inertial power required to accelerate the limbs. It was concluded that, during repetitive dynamic movements, MFCV increases with the external force developed, instantaneous knee angular speed, and average pedal rate, indicating progressive recruitment of large, high conduction velocity motor units with increasing muscle force.  相似文献

This study evaluated the accuracy of Hill-type muscle models during movement. Hill-type models are ubiquitous in biomechanical simulations. They are attractive because of their computational simplicity and close relation to commonly measured experimental variables, but there have been surprisingly few experimental validations of these models during functionally relevant conditions. Our hypothesis was that model errors during movement are largest at the low motor unit firing rates most relevant to normal movement conditions. This hypothesis was evaluated in the cat soleus muscle activated either by electrical stimulation at physiological rates or via the crossed-extension reflex (CXR) thereby obtaining normal patterns of motor unit recruitment and rate modulation. These activation paradigms were applied during continuous movements approximately matched to locomotor length changes. The resulting muscle force was modeled using a common Hill model incorporating independent activation, tetanic length-tension and tetanic force-velocity properties. Errors for this model were greatest for stimulation rates between approximately 10-20Hz. Errors were especially large for muscles activated via the CXR, where most motor units appear to fire within this range. For large muscle excursions, such as those seen during normal locomotion, the errors for naturally activated muscle typically exceeded 50%, supporting our hypothesis and indicating that the Hill model is not appropriate for these conditions. Subsequent analysis suggested that model errors were due to the common Hill model's inability to account for the coupling between muscle activation and force-velocity properties that is most prevalent at the low motor unit firing rates relevant to normal activation.  相似文献

The "catchlike" property is defined as the dramatic force increase in skeletal muscles when a single pulse is added at the onset of a sub-tetanic low-frequency stimulation train. This property has been observed in single motor units, whole animal and human muscles. It is an inherent property of muscle fibres and is not related to an increase in motor unit recruitment. Despite an abundance of observations, its origin remains unclear. The aim of this study was to induce the catchlike property in human adductor pollicis and identify its possible origin. Thumb adduction forces were measured using ulnar nerve electrical stimulation at 10Hz for reference trains (RTs) with one extra pulse 8ms after the first stimulation pulse for the experimental trains (ETs). Tests were performed at two muscle length and three stimulation levels and muscle stiffness and potentiation were quantified for all test conditions. The ETs showed higher forces and greater rates of force increase than the RTs. In addition, force increase was more pronounced at short compared to long muscle length, but no differences were found in force increase for the three stimulation levels. Furthermore, potentiation and stiffness were similar across all experimental conditions. Together, these results suggest that the increase in force associated with the catchlike property is neither caused by an increased proportion of attached cross-bridges nor potentiation of the muscle, but appears to be muscle length dependent and present in both slow and fast motor units.  相似文献

The separate contributions of the recruitment level and of the firing rate of the motor units on the soundmyogram and electromyogram time domain parameters were investigated during stimulation of the motor nerve of the cat gastrocnemius muscle. Upon orderly increase in the number of active motor units at a fixed firing rate, both the peak to peak amplitude (P-Pmax) and the root mean square (RMS) of the sound myogram increased. At full recruitment the increase in firing rate from 2.5 to 50 Hz induced an exponential decline in the P-Pmax. The RMS, however, followed this trend only from 15 to 50 Hz while showing an increase from 2.5 to 10 Hz. During simultaneous changes of recruitment and firing rate, the effect of increasing the number of motor units on the P-Pmax and RMS is dampened by the increasing firing rate. The peak to peak amplitude of the EMG compound action potential increased with the number of active motor units. Moreover, its amplitude was not influenced by the firing rate. The EMG RMS, however, increases as a function of the firing rate. The results indicate that both the number and the firing rate of the active motor units contribute to the determination of the soundmyogram characteristics. Moreover, the peculiar changes of the soundmyogram time domain properties, compared to the ones of the EMG, allow one to differentiate the influence of the motor units number and firing rate on the electrical and mechanical performance of the muscle when stimulated.  相似文献

Differences between motor units in hindlimb locomotor muscles of male and female Wistar rats were studied. The contractile and action potential properties of various types of motor units as well as proportions of these units in the medial gastrocnemius muscle were analyzed. Experiments were based on functional isolation and electrical stimulation of axons of single motor units. Composition of motor units was different for male and female subjects, with higher number of the fast fatigable and lower number of slow type units in male animals. The contraction and the half-relaxation times were significantly longer in male motor units, what might be due to differences in muscle size. Slower contraction of male motor units likely corresponds to lower firing rates of their motoneurons. On the other hand, no significant differences between sexes were observed with respect to force parameters of motor units (the twitch and the maximum tetanus forces), except the fast resistant units (higher force values in male muscles). The mass of the muscle was approximately 1.5 time bigger in male rats. However, the mean ratio of motor unit tetanus force to the muscle mass was almost twice smaller in this group, what indirectly suggests that muscles of male rats are composed of higher number of motor units. Finally, female muscles appeared to have higher fatigue resistance as the effect of higher proportion of resistant units (slow and fast resistant) and higher values of the fatigue index in respective motor unit types. The motor unit action potentials in female rats had slightly lower amplitudes and shorter time parameters although this difference was significant only for fast resistant units.  相似文献

Single, functionally isolated motor units were studied in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle of cats and rats. Axons of their motoneurons were stimulated with trains of pulses at frequencies increasing from 1 to 150 Hz and forces developed by muscle fibers were measured and force-frequency curves were compared between species. The following observations were made: (1) the most steep parts of curves (related to unfused tetani of motor units) begun at lower frequencies of stimulations in all types of feline motor units, (2) for fast motor units, the same relative values of force of unfused tetani were achieved at significantly lower frequencies of stimulations in the cat than in the rat. Twitch time parameters of both species influenced the course of force-frequency curves. It was showed that the contraction times of feline units varied in the wide range (21-81 ms), and these units reached 60% of the maximum force at stimulation frequencies between 10 and 38 Hz. On the other hand, contraction times of rat units ranged from 10 to 34 ms, whereas stimulation frequencies necessary to reach 60% of the maximum force varied considerably, from 12 to 65 Hz. The correlations between the above parameters were found for motor units of each species. However, the regression lines drown for the collected population of cat and rat units did not form linear continuity. Thus it seems that interspecies differences in the twitch contraction times do not fully explain different force-frequency relationships in mammalian skeletal muscles.  相似文献

An association between oxidative stress and muscle atrophy and weakness in vivo is supported by elevated oxidative damage and accelerated loss of muscle mass and force with aging in CuZn-superoxide dismutase-deficient (Sod1(-/-)) mice. The purpose was to determine the basis for low specific force (N/cm(2)) of gastrocnemius muscles in Sod1(-/-) mice and establish the extent to which structural and functional changes in muscles of Sod1(-/-) mice resemble those associated with normal aging. We tested the hypothesis that muscle weakness in Sod1(-/-) mice is due to functionally denervated fibers by comparing forces during nerve and direct muscle stimulation. No differences were observed for wild-type mice at any age in the forces generated in response to nerve and muscle stimulation. Nerve- and muscle-stimulated forces were also not different for 4-wk-old Sod1(-/-) mice, whereas, for 8- and 20-mo-old mice, forces during muscle stimulation were 16 and 30% greater, respectively, than those obtained using nerve stimulation. In addition to functional evidence of denervation with aging, fiber number was not different for Sod1(-/-) and wild-type mice at 4 wk, but 50% lower for Sod1(-/-) mice by 20 mo, and denervated motor end plates were prevalent in Sod1(-/-) mice at both 8 and 20 mo and in WT mice by 28 mo. The data suggest ongoing denervation in muscles of Sod1(-/-) mice that results in fiber loss and muscle atrophy. Moreover, the findings support using Sod1(-/-) mice to explore mechanistic links between oxidative stress and the progression of deficits in muscle structure and function.  相似文献

It is currently not possible to record electromyographic (EMG) signals from many locations concurrently inside the muscle in a single wire electrode system. We developed a thin-film wire electrode system for multichannel intramuscular EMG recordings. The system was fabricated using a micromachining process, with a silicon wafer as production platform for polyimide-based electrodes. In the current prototype, the flexible polymer structure is 220 microm wide, 10 microm thick, and 1.5 cm long, and it has eight circular platinum-platinum chloride recording sites of 40-microm diameter distributed along the front and back surfaces with 1,500-microm intersite spacing. The system prototype was tested in six experiments where the electrode was implanted into the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle of rabbits, perpendicular to the pennation angle of the muscle fibers. Asynchronous motor unit activity was induced by eliciting the withdrawal reflex or sequential crushes of the sciatic nerve using a pair of forceps. Sixty-seven motor units were identified from these recordings. In the bandwidth 200 Hz to 5 kHz, the peak-to-peak amplitude of the action potentials of the detected motor units was 75 +/- 12 muV and the root mean square of the noise was 1.6 +/- 0.4 muV. The noise level and amplitude of the action potentials were similar for measures separated by up to 40 min. The experimental tests demonstrated that thin film is a promising technology for a new type of flexible-wire intramuscular EMG recording system with multiple detection sites.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test whether surface mechanomyogram (MMG) recorded on the skin reflects the contractile properties of individual motor units in humans. Eight motor units in the medial gastrocnemius muscle were identified, and trains of stimulation at 5, 10, 15, and 20 Hz were delivered to each isolated motor unit. There was a significant positive correlation between the duration of MMG and twitch duration. MMG amplitude decreased with increasing stimulation frequency. Reductions in MMG amplitude were in parallel with the reductions in force fluctuations, and the rate of change in both was positively correlated across the motor units. Rate of change in MMG amplitude against force was negatively correlated to half relaxation time and twitch duration. Similar negative correlations were found between force fluctuations and contractile properties. These results provide evidence supporting a direct relation between MMG and contractile properties of individual motor units within the gastrocnemius muscle, indicating that surface MMG is dependent on the contractile properties of the activated motor units in humans.  相似文献

The relationship between surface myoelectric signal parameters and the level of voluntary or electrically elicited contractions was studied in 32 experiments on the tibialis anterior muscle of 22 healthy human subjects. Contractions were performed at 20 and 80% of the maximum voluntary contraction torque. Two levels of stimulation current were used, yielding, respectively, a maximum M wave and an M wave approximately 30% of the maximum. A four-bar electrode probe was used to detect single- and double-differential signals from which mean and median frequency of the power spectrum and average muscle fiber conduction velocity were estimated. Measurements obtained from voluntary contractions showed a positive correlation between contraction levels and both conduction velocity and spectral parameters. Conduction velocity increased by 21.2 +/- 10.9% when voluntary contraction level increased from 20 to 80% of the maximal value. Spectral parameters increased by similar amounts. Tetanic electrical stimulation was applied to a muscle motor point for 20 s via surface electrodes. Rectangular current pulses with 0.1-ms width and frequencies of 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 Hz were used. Four types of behavior were observed with increasing stimulation level: 1) the two spectral parameters and conduction velocity both increased with stimulation in 15 experiments, 2) the two spectral parameters decreased and conduction velocity increased in 8 experiments, 3) the two spectral parameters and conduction velocity both decreased in 6 experiments, and 4) the two spectral parameters increased and conduction velocity decreased in 3 experiments. Conduction velocity increased with increasing stimulation current in 72% of the experiments, indicating a recruitment order similar to that of voluntary contractions, although it decreased in the other 28% of the cases, indicating a reverse order of recruitment. Contrary to what is observed in direct stimulation of nerves, motor units are not in general recruited in reverse order of size during electrical stimulation of a muscle motor point. This discrepancy may be the result of geometric factors or a lack of correlation between axonal branch diameter and the diameter of the parent motoneuron axon. Changes of conduction velocity and spectral parameters in opposite directions may be the result of the combined effect of the motor unit recruitment order and of the different tissue filtering function associated with the geometric location of the recruited motor units within the muscle.  相似文献

The synchronized firings of active motor units (MUs) increase the oscillations of muscle force, observed as physiological tremor. This study aimed to investigate the effects of synchronizing the firings within three types of MUs (slow—S, fast resistant to fatigue–FR, and fast fatigable–FF) on the muscle force production using a mathematical model of the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle. The model was designed based on the actual proportion and physiological properties of MUs and motoneurons innervating the muscle. The isometric muscle and MU forces were simulated by a model predicting non-synchronized firing of a pool of 57 MUs (including 8 S, 23 FR, and 26 FF) to ascertain a maximum excitatory signal when all MUs were recruited into the contraction. The mean firing frequency of each MU depended upon the twitch contraction time, whereas the recruitment order was determined according to increasing forces (the size principle). The synchronization of firings of individual MUs was simulated using four different modes and inducing the synchronization of firings within three time windows (± 2, ± 4, and ± 6 ms) for four different combinations of MUs. The synchronization was estimated using two parameters, the correlation coefficient and the cross-interval synchronization index. The four scenarios of synchronization increased the values of the root-mean-square, range, and maximum force in correlation with the increase of the time window. Greater synchronization index values resulted in higher root-mean-square, range, and maximum of force outcomes for all MU types as well as for the whole muscle output; however, the mean spectral frequency of the forces decreased, whereas the mean force remained nearly unchanged. The range of variability and the root-mean-square of forces were higher for fast MUs than for slow MUs; meanwhile, the relative values of these parameters were highest for slow MUs, indicating their important contribution to muscle tremor, especially during weak contractions.  相似文献

The effects of acute hypoxia on motor cortex excitability, force production, and voluntary activation were studied using single- and double-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques in 14 healthy male subjects. Electrical supramaximal stimulations of the right ulnar nerve were performed, and transcranial magnetic stimulations were delivered to the first dorsal interosseus motor cortex area during short-term hypoxic (HX) and normoxic (NX) condition. M waves, voluntary activation, F waves, resting motor threshold (rMT), recruitment curves (100-140% of rMT), and short-interval intracortical inhibition and intracortical facilitation were measured. Moreover, motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) and cortical silent periods were determined during brief isometric maximum right index finger abductions. Hypoxia was induced by breathing a fraction of inspired oxygen of 12% via a face mask. M waves, voluntary activation, and F waves did not differ between NX and HX. The rMT was significantly lower in HX (55.79 +/- 9.40%) than in NX (57.50 +/- 10.48%) (P < 0.01), whereas MEP recruitment curve, short-interval intracortical inhibition, intracortical facilitation, maximum right index finger abduction, and MEPs were unaffected by HX. In contrast, the cortical silent periods in HX (158.21 +/- 33.96 ms) was significantly shortened compared with NX (169.42 +/- 39.69 ms) (P < 0.05). These data demonstrate that acute hypoxia results in increased cortical excitability and suggest that acute hypoxia alters motor cortical ion-channel function and GABAergic transmission.  相似文献

Faucial pillar (FP) stimulation is commonly used in swallowing rehabilitation, yet its physiological basis remains uncertain. We investigated the effects of intraoral FP stimulation on human corticobulbar excitability and swallowing behavior, to explore the possibility of a central mechanism for functional change. In 10 healthy subjects, corticobulbar projections to pharynx were investigated with transcranial magnetic stimulation, via intraluminal electrodes, before and up to 1 h after 10 min of electrical FP stimulation with three frequencies (0.2, 1, and 5 Hz) or sham and peripheral (median nerve) stimulation. In a second study, swallowing behavior was assessed with videofluoroscopy before and after FP stimulation. FP stimulation at 5 Hz inhibited the corticobulbar projection (-14 +/- 6%, P < 0.02) and lengthened swallow response time (+114 +/- 24%, P = 0.02). By comparison, FP stimulation at 0.2 Hz facilitated this projection (+60 +/- 28%, P < 0.04), without enhancing swallowing behavior. Neither 1-Hz, sham, nor median nerve stimulation altered excitability. Thus changes in corticobulbar excitability to FP stimulation are frequency dependent with implications for the treatment for neurogenic swallowing dysfunction.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of water swallowing, pharyngeal stimulation, and oropharyngeal anesthesia on corticobulbar and craniobulbar projections to human swallowing musculature. Changes in pathway excitability were measured via electromyography from swallowed intraluminal pharyngeal and esophageal electrodes to motor cerebral and trigeminal nerve magnetic stimulation. After both water swallowing and pharyngeal stimulation, pharyngoesophageal corticobulbar excitability increased (swallowing: pharynx = 59 +/- 12%, P < 0.001; esophagus = 45 +/- 20%, P < 0.05; pharyngeal stimulation: pharynx = 76 +/- 19%, P < 0.001; esophagus = 45 +/- 23%, P = 0.05), being early with swallowing but late with stimulation. By comparison, craniobulbar excitability increased early after swallowing but remained unaffected by pharyngeal stimulation. After anesthesia, both corticobulbar (pharynx =-24 +/- 10%, P < 0.05; esophagus = -28 +/- 7%, P < 0.01) and craniobulbar excitability showed a late decrease. Thus swallowing induces transient early facilitation of corticobulbar and craniobulbar projections, whereas electrical stimulation promotes delayed facilitation mainly in cortex. With removal of input, both corticobulbar and craniobulbar projections show delayed inhibition, implying a reduction in motoneuron and/or cortical activity.  相似文献
