Deep misunderstandings still besiege taxonomy after more than 200 years of fruitful output. It has been asserted in this journal that taxonomy should be integrative and conform to a series of restrictive guidelines. We show that taxonomy has been integrative for most of its history although, in our sense, integrative does not mean the indiscriminate pooling of any source of data. The guidelines proposed are not founded in good scientific rationale and can have, if followed, a detrimental effect not only on taxonomy, but also on biology as a whole.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 93 , 211–216.  相似文献

In an attempt to facilitate the integration of various methods of species delimitation, Dayrat (2005 ) recommends a set of nomenclatorial guidelines. He proposes to restrict the application of new specific epithets where a recent taxonomic revision has not dealt with the totality of names and variation in the group, where specimens are not well-represented in collections, where DNA extraction from type specimens is not possible, and where putative novel species are supported only by a single type of data (e.g. morphological). Dayrat further recommends that putative novel species for which only one type of data exists be described with the abbreviation 'sp.', so as to avoid the permanent establishment of a specific epithet, as required by the current codes of nomenclature. Contradicting himself, Dayrat implies that putative novel species supported only by DNA sequences should be named as valid species. If adopted, Dayrat's guidelines would impede taxonomic progress, diminish the utility of taxonomy to its users (e.g. conservation biologists and biogeographers), and prevent the integration of methods of species delimitation.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 761–764.  相似文献

During the preparation of a World Rubiaceae Checklist , numerous unplaced taxa were encountered, including illegitimate and invalid names, and species for which generic placement is uncertain. In this contribution, 35 new combinations and 20 new names are proposed, and the names of three taxa are validated.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 115–124.  相似文献

The genus Labulla Simon is circumscribed in phylogenetic terms to include the species Labulla thoracica (Wider), L. flahaulti Simon and L. machadoi sp. nov. The genital anatomy of the genus is described in detail and the taxonomy of the genus is reviewed. The monophyly of Labulla is supported by numerous morphological apomorphies of the male palp and female epigynum. Based on a cladistic analysis, a new genus, Pecado gen. nov. , is erected to place Labulla impudica Denis, from Northern Africa. Lepthyphantes insularis Saito and ' Labulla ' nepula Tikader, both formerly included in Labulla , are not congeneric with the type species of Labulla .  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 143 , 359–404.  相似文献

The phylogeny and taxonomy of the whole family Hippopotamidae is in need of reconsideration, the present confusion obstructing palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography studies of these Neogene mammals. The revision of the Hippopotamidae initiated here deals with the last 8 Myr of African and Asian species. The first thorough cladistic analysis of the family is presented here. The outcome of this analysis, including 37 morphological characters coded for 15 extant and fossil taxa, as well as non-coded features of mandibular morphology, was used to reconstruct broad outlines of hippo phylogeny. Distinct lineages within the paraphyletic genus Hexaprotodon are recognized and characterized. In order to harmonize taxonomy and phylogeny, two new genera are created. The genus name Choeropsis is re-validated for the extant Liberian hippo. The nomen Hexaprotodon is restricted to the fossil lineage mostly known in Asia, but also including at least one African species. The genus Hippopotamus is confirmed. These changes represent substantial advances for understanding the evolutionary history of the Hippopotamidae, and provide a new framework for future studies.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 143 , 1–26.  相似文献

DNA sequences are currently used to propose primary hypotheses of species delimitation, especially when morphological variability is difficult to assess. In an integrative taxonomy framework, these hypotheses are then compared with other characters, such as morphology or geography, to produce robust species delimitations. For this purpose, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene has been sequenced for almost 50 specimens of the genus Benthomangelia , a deep-sea marine gastropod genus, collected in the South-West Pacific. Five genetic groups, displaying low and high genetic distances respectively within and between groups, were defined. COI hypotheses were compared with both the results obtained with the independent nuclear 28S gene and with an elliptic Fourier analysis of the shape of the last whorl of the shell. 28S gene analysis confirmed the same well-supported groups as COI, and elliptic Fourier analysis identified several morphological characters that vary similarly to genetic variability.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 696–708.  相似文献

Representatives of the genus Praomys occur throughout the African intertropical zone. It is unclear how many species this genus contains, nor do we know the exact distribution ranges and phylogenetic relationships of these taxa. Using molecular (16S rRNA gene sequencing) and morphological (multivariate craniometry) analyses we clarify the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships among the Praomys occurring in Africa's lowland tropical rainforests. We studied most species known from this area, based on specimens collected in seven countries (Guinea, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon, Congo Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo). In our study, Praomys appears to be monophyletic. Our results identify two species complexes: the jacksoni complex includes at least two species ( P. jacksoni and P. mutoni ) and the tullbergi complex contains at least four species ( P. tullbergi , P. rostratus , P. misonnei , P. petteri ). Although the 16S rRNA gene appears insufficient to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among all the members of the tullbergi species complex, it is suitable for the identification of most of the studied species, and its use has allowed us to redefine the geographical limits of several species.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 145 , 539–553.  相似文献

Integrative taxonomy considers species boundaries from multiple, complementary perspectives, with the main objective being to compare the observed data against the predictions of the methodologies used. In the present study we used three methods for delineating species boundaries within the cosmopolitan nematode species Rhabditis ( Pellioditis ) marina and Halomonhystera disjuncta . First, phylogenetic relationships among molecular sequences from the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 gene (COI), and from two nuclear regions, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and D2D3, were analysed. Subsequently, multivariate morphometric analysis was used to investigate whether concordant molecular lineages were also morphologically distinct. When morphological differences were found, typological taxonomy was performed to identify fixed or non-overlapping characters between lineages. Interbreeding experiments were conducted between the two closest related lineages of R . ( P. ) marina to investigate potential reproductive isolation. This integrative approach confirmed the presence of several species within each nominal species: molecular lineages were concordant across two independent loci (COI and ITS), and were characterized by significant morphological divergence. Most lineages were also detectable in the D2D3 region, but were less resolved. The two lineages investigated in our study did not produce offspring. Our results highlight that classical taxonomy grossly underestimates species diversity within the phylum Nematoda.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 737–753.  相似文献

Isoetes velata A. Braun is an amphibious plant with Mediterranean and Ibero-Atlantic distribution, showing marked morphological variability. Within the same geographical area, closely related restricted-range taxa are also present, including I. velata ssp. asturicense (restricted to mountainous areas of the north-west Iberian Peninsula) and I. boryana (restricted to the southern French Atlantic coast). These related taxa have unclear taxonomy and are both threatened. We performed a morphometric study of specimens of the three taxa. Our results suggest that I. velata ssp. asturicense is better considered as a distinct species, I. asturicense Laínz (Laínz), distinguishable from the other two taxa by mean megaspore length ( N  ≥ 30) < 360 µm. In contrast, our results do not support consideration of I. boryana as a separate species, and we here propose that this taxon be considered as a variety, I. velata A. Braun var. boryana M.I. The tribe Cercosaurini is one of the most poorly studied groups of the lizard family Gymnophthalmidae. Recent studies have suggested that two cercosauriine genera, Neusticurus and Proctoporus , are polyphyletic. The aim of the current study was to rectify the polyphyletic relationships and construct a phylogenetic taxonomy of the Cercosaurini that is congruent with evolutionary history. Neusticurus is divided into two genera, one of them new ( Potamites ), based on the clades recovered by molecular studies and previously discussed morphological data. Proctoporus is divided into three genera, one of which is new ( Petracola ), while an older name ( Riama ) is resurrected for another. All five genera are described and defined and taxonomic keys are presented. This study represents an important advance in rectifying the taxonomy of the Cercosaurini. Many other para- and polyphyletic genera remain in the Gymnophthalmidae and much future work on this group is warranted.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 143 , 405–416.  相似文献

Geometric morphometric techniques were employed to assess the diversity of lip shapes (305 samples from 83 populations) in flowers of European Russian Dactylorhiza (Orchidaceae: Orchidinae). We found significant agreement between the results from geometric morphometrics, classic morphometrics and the distribution of certain nuclear DNA markers. The lip shapes from Arctic Dactylorhiza samples occupied an intermediate position between D. maculata and D. fuchsii samples from Central Russia, supporting a hybrid origin of 'northern tetraploids'. Lip shapes of the taxonomically controversial allotetraploid D. baltica were found to form a distinct group, with members having definite relationships with diploid D. incarnata samples from the same localities, indicating either their local origin or introgression with D. incarnata . In addition to demonstrating the value of geometric morphometric methods in studies of plant taxonomy and hybridization, we suggest future applications designed to explore pollinator-driven directional selection, developmental constraints and fluctuating asymmetry.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 1–12.  相似文献

The great taxonomic diversity of the Orchidaceae is often attributed to adaptive radiation for specific pollinators driven by selection for outcrossing. However, when one looks beyond the product to the process, the evidence for selection is less than overwhelming. We explore this problem by discussing relevant aspects of orchid biology and asking which aspects of reproduction explain the intricate pollination mechanisms and diversification of this family. We reaffirm that orchids are primarily pollination limited, the severity of which is affected by resource constraints. Fruit set is higher in temperate than in tropical species, and in species which offer pollinator rewards than those that do not. Reproductive success is skewed towards few individuals in a population and effective population sizes are often small. Population structure, reproductive success and gene flow among populations suggest that in many situations genetic drift may be as important as selection in fostering genetic and morphological variation in this family. Although there is some evidence for a gradualist model of evolutionary change, we believe that the great diversity in this family is largely a consequence of sequential and rapid interplay between drift and natural selection.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 1–54.  相似文献

Recent molecular studies have clarified the problem of the generic limits of Carthamus . However, taxonomic problems remain in the sectional classification: section Carthamus was confirmed as a natural group, but molecular phylogenies based on DNA sequences did not resolve the other sections, resulting in a confusing conglomerate. A survey based on RAPD markers has been carried out in this conflicting group of sections, with the aim of evaluating the usefulness of these markers at the section and species levels. On the basis of the results, correlated with morphological and karyological characters, some recommendations are made in relation to the taxonomy of Carthamus . The number of sections is reduced from five to two: section Thamnacanthus is currently classified as a different genus, Phonus ; section Carthamus s.s. is retained in its present delimitation, and section Atractylis is redefined, including current sections Atractylis , Lepidopappus and Odontagnathius . The commonly accepted treatment of some taxa as subspecies is not well founded, and C. alexandrinus , C. creticus , C. tenuis and C. turkestanicus should be considered as independent species. Our results confirm that methodological problems posed by RAPD markers can be avoided by careful laboratory procedures and appropriate data analyses; they also suggest that this kind of marker is useful at low taxonomic levels and is, furthermore, complementary to DNA sequence analysis.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 147 , 375–383.  相似文献

The seamounts chain offers a set of fragmented habitats in which species with poor dispersive ability may undergo divergence in allopatry. Such a scenario may explain the endemism often described on seamounts. In gastropods, it is possible to infer the mode of development of a species from the morphology of its larval shell. Accordingly, we examine the population genetics of several caenogastropods from the Norfolk and Lord Howe seamounts (south‐west Pacific) with contrasting modes of larval development. A prerequisite to our study was to clarify the taxonomic framework. The species delimitation was ruled using an integrative approach, based on both morphological and molecular evidence. Molecular data indicate an unexpected taxonomic diversity within the existing species names. Both the clarification of the taxonomic framework and the importance of the sampling effort allow us to confidently detect cryptic diversity and micro‐endemism. These results are discussed in relation to the dispersive capacities of the organisms. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 420–438.  相似文献

The relationship between diversity of large trees and altitude was investigated in a Tanzanian tropical rain forest. In total, 231 samples of 20 trees of ≥ 20 cm d.b.h. from the East and West Usambara mountains, covering an elevation range from 280 m to 2180 m a.s.l., were analysed. An ordination demonstrated a constant turnover of species, genera, family and orders with elevation. There were no obvious zones or discontinuities. There was no decline in plot richness with respect to altitude for species, genera or orders. Family richness was shown to increase with altitude. A measure of genetic diversity, the avalanche index, was calculated for each plot to investigate the effect of incorporating phylogenetic relatedness of individuals into the diversity measure. Distances between taxa were extracted from a recent molecular phylogeny of the angiosperms. Incorporation of phylogenetic diversity at family level enhanced the positive correlation between plot diversity and altitude.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 149 , 217–228.  相似文献
