Three electrophoretically separable phenotypes of heart and lateral line muscle myoglobin were found in the Irish pollan (Coregonus pollan). This polymorphism appears to be under the control of two co-dominant alleles. The allele frequencies were found to be virtually identical in samples from two lakes which have probably been isolated since the close of the last Ice Age. A significant excess of heterozygotes was found in samples from both lakes. This myoglobin polymorphism appears to be balanced, maintained due to heterozygote superiority.  相似文献

The ecology of four relict Irish populations of pollan ( Coregonus autumnalis ) is compared with that of the species elsewhere, and used to advocate conservation. The threats to these populations from introduced/invasive species, habitat degradation, climate warming and commercial exploitation are summarized and the legislation governing conservation of the stocks is reviewed. Conservation options (legislation, habitat restoration, stock translocation and stock augmentation) are outlined and their practicality and efficacy considered. A preliminary search indicates that there are a number of lakes that appear to be suitable for pollan translocation.  相似文献

Within-species differentiation in phenotypic characters related to resource use (resource polymorphism) is frequently thought to result from divergent natural selection in a heterogeneous environment with 'open niches'. In this study we found consistent resource-based polymorphism within three different populations of Percichthys trucha , a lake-dwelling fish native to the southern Andes. In each of three lakes we found two morphotypes that could be clearly distinguished by differences in gill raker length. However, the magnitude of the polymorphism, and the suite of phenotypic characteristics associated with the polymorphism, differed between lakes. Patterns of divergence were more similar between the two northern lakes which ultimately drain into a common river, than between these two lakes and a more southern, unconnected lake. The southern population, which had the largest divergence in gill raker length (32% vs. 16% and 19%), also showed substantial differences in diet. Evidence from the southern population suggests that polymorphism in P. trucha is present early during ontogeny. We conclude that while there are some strong parallels among lakes in the development of a trophic polymorphism, differences in environmental ­conditions and/or colonization history have led to substantial differences in the evolutionary history, resulting in ­different ecological roles of common morphotypes within different lakes.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 497–515.  相似文献

The depth limits for visual feeding by pollan larvae and fry, Coregonus pollan , were determined in Lough Neagh, Northern Ireland, by combining laboratory estimates of the minimum light threshold for feeding activity with field measurements of spectral, diurnal and seasonal changes in light penetration. Although feeding thresholds were lowest in the blue light (400–490 nm), the rapid attenuation of this region in the lake meant that the depth limits of feeding in situ were determined by response to the green region (490–595 nm). Effects of changes in irradiance and light penetration on the depth of feeding are considered during a seasonal study. Increased sensitivity, as the juvenile stages develop, may be offset by reduced light penetration due to algal growth. Over an annual period the maximum feeding depth for pollan varied between 2.6 and 4.1 m. In the juvenile stages of two other predatory species from the lake, perch, Perca fluviatilis , and pike, Esox lucius , the corresponding ranges were 1.1–1.9 m and 2.7–4.6 m respectively.  相似文献

The difference in the allele frequencies of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the second exon of the myoglobin gene between Japanese and other populations is reported. These SNPs are the substitutions of (A79G) and (T109C), and they were investigated by a single polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis followed by direct sequencing. The substitutions were always linked and two alleles were found in the samples used: the A-T allele with no substitution at positions (79A) and (109T) and the G-C allele with substitutions of (79G) and (109C). The frequencies of these alleles were 0.755 and 0.245, respectively, and they were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The distribution of alleles in the Japanese population was significantly different from that reported among whites, blacks, and Hispanics (p < 0.0001).  相似文献

Restriction enzyme analysis of the variable tandem repetition (VTR) region of the human HRAS1 oncogene revealed two TaqI polymorphisms. The first polymorphism overlaps that detected with MspI/HpaII restriction enzymes and is due to a variable number of repeat units which form the VTR region at the 3' end of the oncogene. The second polymorphism appears to be due to two new TaqI restriction sites created within the VTR region itself. This novel polymorphism was detected in 26 of 145 human DNA samples and was found to segregate in a Mendelian fashion.  相似文献

The primary sequences of the myoglobins of two rodents (the South American viscacha and the Mediterranean mole rat) have been determined. Both myoglobins exhibit one polymorphism. The two rodent sequences have been compared with each other and with other known myoglobins. The myoglobin of the viscacha is similar to those of the diving mammals and penguin in having a high arginine content. Among mammalian sequences, the arginines at positions 77 (in one of the viscacha myoglobins) and 79 have been found only in the myoglobin from viscacha. Studies on the chemical composition of adult pollan were carried out monthly from January to December 1977. Sex, weight of scaled fillet, and gonads were examined in 184 fish. Chemical composition which includes water, fat and ash content was analysed in the whole fish, muscle and gonads. This paper attempts to account for the fat and protein flow within fish of both sexes during gonad maturation. Extreme differences between males and females have been recorded in the fat deposition process during summer and spawning period. In spite of our fragmentary knowledge of spawning behaviour in pollan, an explanation is offered for these phenomena. The changes in fat content of female gonads were followed closely throughout the year and the cost of egg production was estimated as a percentage of the amount of fat deposited in the body. Since a similar growth pattern was found for both sexes of pollan, differences in feeding intensity might account for the difference in energy expenditure. Amino acid content was analysed in muscle and gonads and an Essential Amino Acid Index (EAAI) was calculated. There were some changes in EAAI which depended on sex and season. Finally, a new method for evaluation of muscle production expressed as fat and protein is used to determine the most suitable time for fish harvesting.  相似文献

The interactions of myoglobin with urea, methyl-, N,N'-dimethyl- and ethylurea in aqueous solutions were studied by density measurements. From the densities at constant chemical potential and constant molality, the partial specific volumes of myoglobin in these solutions as well as the extent of preferential binding of urea and alkylurea to myoglobin were determined. It has been found that water and not the denaturant is preferentially bound in urea solutions and alkylurea solutions up to 4 M so that the Gibbs free energy of myoglobin, i.e., its chemical potential in a denaturant solution, is larger than in water. This behavior of myoglobin is different from that of other globular proteins for which preferential binding of urea has been found. It appears that preferential hydration of myoglobin is due to its high content of ionic groups.  相似文献

Stomach contents of pollan caught monthly throughout the year were examined. Stomach fullness was significantly correlated with water temperature. Adult pollan fed on bottom fauna, mainly chironomid larvae, in October-March, chironomid pupae in April and on Daphnia spp. in May-September. Immature (0+ and 1 +) fish also ate other cladocerans and copepods. While there is no evidence for selection of any benthic prey species, adult pollan appear to be highly selective feeders on Daphnia spp. in summer.  相似文献

Divergent natural selection affecting specific trait combinations that lead to greater efficiency in resource exploitation is believed to be a major mechanism leading to trophic polymorphism and adaptive radiation. We present evidence of trophic polymorphism involving two benthic morphs within Percichthys trucha , a fish endemic to temperate South America. In a series of lakes located in the southern Andes, we found two morphs of P. trucha that could be distinguished on the basis of gill raker length and five other morphological measures, most of which are likely associated with the use of food resources. The differences were consistent across all lakes examined, and were correlated with habitat use and diet. Individuals with longer gill rakers were more abundant in the littoral zone (littoral morph) while the short gill-raker morph was more abundant at 10 m depth and deeper (deep benthic morph). Both morphs fed primarily on benthic invertebrates, but the littoral morph fed more on larval Anisoptera than did the deep benthic morph. Phenotypic correlations among traits were high for the littoral morph, but low and non-significant for the deep-benthic morph. We suggest that gill raker length may influence the relative efficiency of suction feeding for the two morphs. This is the first evidence of trophic polymorphism in fishes from temperate South America.  相似文献

The Western Branch of the East African Great Rift Valley is pocketed with craters of extinct or dormant volcanoes. Many of the craters are filled with water, and the lakes are inhabited by fishes. The objective of the present study was to determine the amount and nature of genetic variation in haplochromine fishes inhabiting two of these crater lakes, Lake Lutoto and Lake Nshere, and to use this information to infer the origin and history of the two populations. To this end, sequences of mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region, exon 2 of major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) class II B genes, and short interspersed elements (SINEs) were analyzed. The results indicate that the Lake Nshere and Lake Lutoto fishes originated from different but related large founding populations derived from the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George. Some of the genetic polymorphism that existed in the ancestral populations was lost in the populations of the two lakes. The polymorphism that has been retained has persisted for some 50000 generations (years). During this time, new mutations arose and became fixed in each of the two populations in the mtDNA, giving rise to sets of diagnostic substitutions. Each population evolved in isolation after the colonization of the lakes less than 50000 years ago. There appears to be no population structure within the crater lake fishes, and their present effective population sizes are in the order of 104 to 105 individuals. Comparisons with the endemic haplochromine species of Lake Victoria reveal interesting parallels, as well as differences, which may help to understand the nature of the speciation process.  相似文献

Twenty lakes in the Matamek and nearby watersheds were sampled in the summer of 1983 for water chemistry and surficial sediments. Thirty-two physical and chemical variables, including pH, alkalinity, cations and metal concentrations were measured on samples from the epilimnion and hypolimnion of each lake. In three lakes, two to four replicate cores were collected to estimate spatial variability of the sediment flora.All lakes were acidic (pH 4.59 to 5.80), highly colored and poorly buffered. Aluminum and magnesium concentrations reached 494 and 70 µg l-1, respectively. The pH of the lakes appears to be declining, as indicated by a comparison of our results with those from a survey done in 1970. An empirical chemical model based on the alkalinity/sulfate ratio and the regression of pH on calcium also indicated that these lakes may be undergoing acidification.Analyses of the diatom flora of the surficial sediments showed strong dominance of 6 species that cooccurred with a large number of rare species (in all, 229 taxa were found). Variability among samples within a lake was as high as among lakes. Calculation of Nygaard's alpha index for each sample and the regression of its log-transformed value on surface pH yielded a relationship that was significantly from other published models. The regression model was applied to a down-core analysis of the diatom flora of the sediments of two lakes. Although the large confidence intervals on pH values predicted by the model obscured any evidence of pH change with sediment depth, there was a significant increase of acidophilous and a decrease of circumneutral species over time, suggesting that a change in the flora, possibly correlated with pH, is taking place.In making comparisons among lakes, the surficial-sediment flora did not provide clear evidence of a relationship with the pH of surface water. Indices computed from the surficial-sediment flora are apparently insensitive to differences in pH over a narrow range, particularly when the lakes being compared are similar chemically. Nygaard's alpha index is shown to be unduly sensitive to outliers. The currently accepted assumption of a progressive linear change in communities may be inadequate for the quantification of acidification processes. Other models, derived from catastrophe theory, may prove more fruitful.  相似文献

Analysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from surficial sediment layers in two antarctic lakes and two temperate lakes showed a high degree of similarity in spite of differences between trophic state, mictic state, or geographic location. Adenosine triphosphate was found at all levels sampled in temperate lake sediment cores but occasionally was present only in surficial layers of antarctic cores. Surficial sediment layers from antarctic lakes contained high chlorophylla (Chla) levels due to the extensive benthic algal mats which occur there. In some antarctic cores, Chla was detectable in deep, old mat layers, whereas Chla was not found in any of the temperate lake cores. Antarctic lake sediments appear to be unique environments where Chla molecules can remain intact for long periods of time due to low light, temperature, and microbial activity. As such, these lakes are important natural laboratories where a long history of microbial interactions can be studied without metazoan perturbation effects. Although there was much variability in concentration of Chla and ATP between samples, there appears to be no relationship between Chla or ATP levels to mictic or trophic states of the lakes. These data suggest that sediment microbial communities may be independent of environmental and biological properties of the overlying water masses.  相似文献

In the two studied subspecies of Coregonus lavaretus , the pollan ( C. l. wartmanni ) (which lives deep in the pelagial) and the gangfish ( C. l. macrophthalmus ) (which lives near the slope, closer to the bottom), duplex retinae containing rod and cone photoreceptors are found. Four morphologically different cone types were observed: unequal double cones, short single cones, long single cones and triple cones. The cones are arranged in a square pattern (four double cones around a central short single cone) in the ventral and ventrotemporal and in a row pattern in the nasal and dorsal areas of the retina. Moreover, intermediate patterns can be observed in several regions indicating that double cone twisting occurs, i.e. double cones twist about their longitudinal axis. The highest cone densities are found in the ventrotemporal area. Conversely, the rod photoreceptor density is the highest in the dorsal retina. While the basic morphology of the retina is the same in both subspecies, the distribution of long single and triple cones differs between the studied animals. While these cone types are very rare in the pollan, they are common in the gangfish, though not exhibiting a regular pattern. The findings are discussed with regard to the photic habitat conditions, the systematic position of coregonids and variation of retinal morphology in the two subspecies.  相似文献

Icelandic threespine sticklebacks show parallel sympatric morphological differences related to different substrate habitats in four Icelandic lakes. The level of morphological diversification varies among the lakes, ranging from a population with a wide morphological distribution to a population with clear resource morphs, where morphological diversification was reflected in diet differences. These differences in morphological divergence are closely related to the differences in the ecological surroundings of each population. This appears to be resource polymorphism, which may lead to population differentiation and speciation. The salt composition of 14 acidic lakes was analysed, and their microbial communities were compared by their 16S rDNA-based single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) fingerprints. The lakes were grouped into three chemically distinct types, and operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified in the 16S rDNA SSCP fingerprints. Discriminant analysis between these groups using a multivariate approach showed that not a single organism, but rather a set of seven OTUs (Ferromicrobium acidophilum, Bacillus pumilus, Acidophilium organovorum, Paenibacillus chibensis, Acidocella sp. and two different alpha-Proteobacteria), was found to be indicative for a given lake type. We conclude that, for these lakes, not single indicator strains but indicator groups exist that are controlled by the ionic composition of the lakes.  相似文献

Evidence is presented on the genetic relationships of 35 coregonine populations from Alaska, Britain, Ireland, Finland and Sweden. This evidence is derived from an electrophoretic analysis of 27 enzyme loci and additional 'general protein loci'. The Irish pollan C. pollan and the Alaskan C. autumnalis gave identical electrophoretic patterns for all proteins suggesting that they are conspecific and separated only since the last glaciation. C. peled, C. albula and the ' C. lavaretus' complex gave unique patterns for a number of proteins. The Fn C. oxyrhynchus X C albula hybrids, from a lake where no other coregonines occur gave a unique pattern for the enzyme phosphoglucose isomerase but all other enzymes were electrophoretically identical to the C. oxyrhynchus parent and the mean gill raker number was closer to this species than in the F1 hybrid.  相似文献
