1. Chironomidae, sampled by interception of drifting cast pupal exuviae, responded to inputs of acid, heavy metal-rich waters in a seasonally flowing tropical stream in northern Australia.
2. Responses included gain of distinctive (indicative) taxa, loss of some species typical of pristine conditions, and increase in species richness.
3. Experimental manipulation (upstream diversion) of a mine adit entry showed that these responses were the result of change in water quality.
4. The higher species richness at low pH, which is contrary to temperate studies, may be explained by the large tropical (Australian and south-east Asian) pool of species tolerant of naturally occurring acidic aquatic habitats.
5. The structure and responses of the exuvial-assessed chironomid community matched long-term larval data.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Bark and ambrosia beetles are crucial for woody biomass decomposition in tropical forests worldwide. Despite that, quantitative data on their host specificity are scarce.
2. Bark and ambrosia beetles (Scolytinae and Platypodinae) were reared from 13 species of tropical trees representing 11 families from all major lineages of dicotyledonous plants. Standardised samples of beetle-infested twigs, branches, trunks, and roots were taken from three individuals of each tree species growing in a lowland tropical rainforest in Papua New Guinea.
3. A total of 81 742 beetles from 74 species were reared, 67 of them identified. Local species richness of bark and ambrosia beetles was estimated at 80–92 species.
4. Ambrosia beetles were broad generalists as 95% of species did not show any preference for a particular host species or clade. Similarity of ambrosia beetle communities from different tree species was not correlated with phylogenetic distances between tree species. Similarity of ambrosia beetle communities from individual conspecific trees was not higher than that from heterospecific trees and different parts of the trees hosted similar ambrosia beetle communities, as only a few species preferred particular tree parts.
5. In contrast, phloeophagous bark beetles showed strict specificity to host plant genus or family. However, this guild was poor in species (12 species) and restricted to only three plant families (Moraceae, Myristicaceae, Sapindaceae).
6. Local diversity of both bark and ambrosia beetles is not driven by the local diversity of trees in tropical forests, since ambrosia beetles display no host specificity and bark beetles are species poor and restricted to a few plant families.  相似文献

Aim  A latitudinal gradient in species richness, defined as a decrease in biodiversity away from the equator, is one of the oldest known patterns in ecology and evolutionary biology. However, there are also many known cases of increasing poleward diversity, forming inverse latitudinal biodiversity gradients. As only three processes (speciation, extinction and dispersal) can directly affect species richness in areas, similar factors may be responsible for both classical (high tropical diversity) and inverse (high temperate diversity) gradients. Thus, a modified explanation for differential species richness which accounts for both patterns would be preferable to one which only explains high tropical biodiversity.
Location  The New World.
Methods  We test several proposed ecological, temporal, evolutionary and spatial explanations for latitudinal diversity gradients in the New World snake tribe Lampropeltini, which exhibits its highest biodiversity in temperate regions.
Results  We find that an extratropical peak in species richness is not explained by latitudinal variation in diversification rate, the mid-domain effect, or Rapoport's rule. Rather, earlier colonization and longer duration in the temperate zones allowing more time for speciation to increase biodiversity, phylogenetic niche conservatism limiting tropical dispersal and the expansion of the temperate zones in the Tertiary better explain inverse diversity gradients in this group.
Main conclusions  Our conclusions are the inverse of the predictions made by the tropical conservatism hypothesis to explain higher biodiversity near the equator. Therefore, we suggest that the processes invoked are not intrinsic to the tropics but are dependent on historical biogeography to determine the distribution of species richness, which we refer to as the 'biogeographical conservatism hypothesis'.  相似文献

1.  Many hypotheses about species coexistence involve differential resource use and trade-offs in species' life-history traits. Quantifying resource use across most species in diverse communities, although, has seldom been attempted.
2.  We use a hierarchical Bayesian approach to quantify the light dependence of recruitment in 263 woody species in a 50-ha long-term forest census plot in Panama. Data on sapling recruitment were obtained using the 1985–1990 and 1990–1995 census intervals. Available light was estimated for each recruit from yearly censuses of canopy density.
3.  We use a power function (linear log–log relationship) to model the light effect on recruitment. Different responses of recruitment to light are expressed by the light effect parameter b . The distribution of b had a central mode at 0.8, suggesting that recruitment of many species responds nearly linearly to increasing light.
4.  Nearly every species showed increases in recruitment with increasing light. Just nine species (3%) had recruitment declining with light, while 198 species (75%) showed increasing recruitment in both census intervals. Most of the increases in recruitment were decelerating, i.e. the increase was less at higher light ( b  < 1). In the remaining species, the response to light varied between census intervals (24 species) or species did not have recruits in both intervals (41 species).
5.   Synthesis. Nearly all species regenerate better in higher light, and recruitment responses to light are spread along a continuum ranging from modest increase with light to a rather strict requirement for high light. These results support the hypothesis that spatio-temporal variation in light availability may contribute to the diversity of tropical tree species by providing opportunities for niche differentiation with respect to light requirements for regeneration.  相似文献

1. It has been suggested that palm fruits are keystone resources for frugivores in tropical rain forests, but no study has addressed this hypothesis. The effects of the harvesting of a dominant palm tree Euterpe edulis were studied over 2 years in the Atlantic forest of Brazil.
2. The abundance of 15 large frugivorous birds from five families (Ramphastidae, Cracidae, Cotingidae, Trogonidae and Psittacidae) was estimated using unlimited distance point counts (IPA) and encounter rate.
3. Although all species studied are known to eat Euterpe fruits, only one Cotingidae ( Carpornis melanocephalus ) and one Ramphastidae ( Ramphastos vitellinus ) were negatively affected by the removal of this palm from the forest.
4. This result indicates that Euterpe palms in the lowland forests do not fulfil the role of keystone species, because they bear ripe fruits during the period of peak overall fruit availability and because birds may switch their diets to other food sources when palms are removed.
5. Palm-heart exploitation is not recommended in small forest areas, nor in areas where E. edulis bears fruit during the period of overall fruit scarcity. Only long-term monitoring can evaluate the responses of the bird and mammal communities to the harvesting process.  相似文献

Guild structure of arthropods from Bornean rain forest trees   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
ABSTRACT. 1. 23275 arthropods collected by insecticide fogging from ten Bornean lowland rain forest trees were sorted to approximately 3000 species and assigned to guilds using two sets of criteria.
2. The rank order for proportions of guilds of species but not individuals is similar in tropical and temperate canopy samples.
3. Misplacement in the guild assignments of a few species can cause important differences in the proportions of certain guilds. This can seriously affect the results of comparisons of different samples, and views on proportional constancy of guilds of species on different trees.
4. Guilds of arthropod species such as chewers, suckers, all phytophages, predators, ants and tourists, occur in constant proportions in samples from different tropical trees and this constancy of proportion is similar in samples from groups of'closely related'and'distantly related'trees.
5. The guild concept of community structure and problems in assigning species to guilds are considered with respect to arthropod samples. The conclusions on constancy of proportion for guilds of species are tempered by remarks on the problems of guild composition.  相似文献

1. Lake Titicaca is a large, high altitude (3810 m a.s.l.) tropical lake (16°S, 68°W) that lies on the border of Bolivia and Perú, receiving high fluxes of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) throughout the year. Our studies were conducted during September of 1997 with the main objective of studying the impact of solar UVR upon phytoplankton photosynthesis.
2. Water samples were taken daily and incubated in situ (down to 14 m depth) under three radiation treatments to study the relative responses to PAR (Photosynthetic Available Radiation, 400–700 nm), UV-A (320–400 nm), and UV-B (280–320 nm) radiation.
3. Photosynthetic inhibition by UVR in surface waters was about 80%, with UV-A accounting for 60% and UV-B for 20%; the inhibition by high levels of PAR was less than 20%. The inhibition due to UVR decreased with depth so that there were no significant differences between treatments at 8.5 m depth.
4. The amount of inhibition per unit energy received by phytoplankton indicates that even though there was a significant inhibition of photosynthesis due to UVR, species in Lake Titicaca seem to be better adapted than species in high latitude environments.
5. The cellular concentration of UV-absorbing compounds, a possible mechanism of photoadaptation, was low in phytoplanktonic species. However, they were abundant in zooplankton, suggesting a high rate of bioaccumulation through the diet.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The tropical forest grasshopper Microtylopteryx hebardi Rehn (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Ommatolampinae) oviposits inside leaves or stems of its host plants. This is the first known instance of oviposition inside living plant tissue (rather than in the ground, on top of leaves, or in detritus) for a tropical forest acridid.
2. In understorey secondary forest at La Selva, Costa Rica, M.hebardi females fed on fifteen species of host plants, but oviposited in only four of these.
3. In laboratory choice tests, females showed selectivity for oviposition host plants similar to that inferred from field observations.
4. Plant volume was a better predictor of the number of eggs laid per stem than variables that indicated leaf or stem characteristics of individual plants.
5. Unlike the ovipositor of acridids laying eggs in the ground, that of M.hebardi is equipped with toothed, sclerotized edges, probably used to bore into plant tissue.
6. Endophytic oviposition in M.hebardi may be related to finding host plants in a habitat that is complex, heterogeneous, and rich in plant species.  相似文献

Aim  We quantify the elevational patterns of species richness for all vascular plants and some functional and taxonomic groups on a regional scale on a tropical mountain and discuss some possible causes for the observed patterns.
Location  Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo.
Methods  A data base containing elevational information on more than 28,000 specimens was analysed for vascular plant distribution, taking into account sampling effort. The total species richness pattern was estimated per 300-m elevational interval by rarefaction analyses. The same methods were also applied to quantify species richness patterns of trees, epiphytes, and ferns.
Results  Total species richness has a humped relationship with elevation, and a maximum species richness in the interval between 900 and 1200 m. For ferns and epiphytes the maximum species richness is found at slightly higher elevations, whereas tree species did not have a statistically significant peak in richness above the lowest interval analysed.
Main conclusions  For the first time a rigorous estimate of an elevational pattern in species richness of the whole vascular plant flora of a tropical mountain has been quantified. The pattern observed depends on the group studied. We discuss the differences between the groups and compare the results with previous studies of elevational patterns of species richness from other tropical areas. We also discuss the methods used to quantify the richness pattern and conclude that rarefaction gives an appropriate estimate of the species richness pattern.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. In this study, the effects of nutrient (N and P) deficiency and the importance of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) [eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] to tropical cladocerans, growth and reproduction were determined in a growth bioassay.
2. The animals were fed N/P-sufficient, N-deficient and P-deficient algae, and also N and P-deficient algae supplemented with fish oil emulsions rich in EPA and DHA.
3. Cladocerans showed different responses to nutrient-deficient algae and also to supplements of fish oil emulsions. Moina micrura was most sensitive to P-deficient alga and, surprisingly, grew better and produced more eggs in N-deficient alga than in N/P sufficient alga. Ceriodaphnia cornuta was less sensitive, growing well in both N and P-deficient algae. This species, however, had a lower clutch size in N-deficient alga. On the other hand, Daphnia gessneri was the most sensitive to mineral limitation, showing decreased growth and clutch size in both nutrient-deficient algae.
4. The PUFA supplements to nutrient-deficient algae increased growth rates only for M. micrura and C. cornuta , suggesting that these fatty acids are important food requirements for these species.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The density (rate of encountering foraging raids) and species richness of army ants (Formicidae: Ecitoninae, and behaviourally convergent Ponerinae) was measured in montane tropical forest. Above-ground and subterranean army ant raids were sampled using standard protocols at four sites across an elevational gradient (1200–1650 m above mean sea level) in and near cloud forest in the area of Monteverde, Costa Rica.
2. Mean ambient temperature differed among sites, and decreased with elevation. For the above-ground foraging army ant species, raid rates also declined with elevation. Surface army ant raid rates, however, were not affected by day to day weather variation within sites (temperature, cloud cover, or precipitation).
3. For the underground foraging army ant species, raid rates did not vary directionally with elevation, and subterranean raid rates were not affected by day to day weather variation within sites.
4. Army ant species richness was not directionally related to elevation, and species sharing among sites was generally high.
5. Army ant community structure changes with elevation in Neotropical montane forest, and the results suggest that the strongest effects are of temperature regimes on the density of raids. These findings provide a baseline against which to detect changes in army ant communities that may accompany directional climate change in tropical cloud forests.  相似文献

Entomogenous fungi in tropical forest ecosystems: an appraisal   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Abstract. 1. Species of the genus Cordyceps (Ascomycotina; Clavicipitales) are the commonest fungi encountered on arthropods in tropical forests.
2. The asexual states of Cordyceps may occur in conjunction with or separately from the perfect state and are classified in the genera Hirsutella, Hymenostilbe, Nomuraea, Paecilomyces and Verticillium of the imperfect fungi (Deuteromycotina; Moniliales).
3. Most Cordyceps species have a restricted host range and this rigid host specificity, at the generic or tribal level, is especially evident in ant-fungal associations.
4. Pathogenicity was not tested but circumstantial evidence is presented which supports the view that Cordyceps species are primary pathogens of arthropods.
5. Observations of living, infected ants suggest that behavioural patterns are radically altered, possibly altruistically orientated.
6. It is thought that entomogenous fungi are involved in the regulation of arthropod populations and may help to maintain stability in tropical forest ecosystems.
7. The value of these organisms to man may be in the metabolites they produce rather than in their direct usage as biological control agents of insect pests.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A series of samples of Homoptera was obtained by fogging the canopy of Luehea seemannii trees in tropical forest in the Panama Canal Zone at three different times of the year.
2. The peak of abundance occurs around July (at least 11.8 individuals/m2), in the early wet season, at a time when most of the trees in the forest, including Luehea are producing new leaves.
3. Minimum abundance occurs in March (at least 3.5 individuals/m2), in the late dry season.
4. The samples obtained are some 35% richer in species per given number of individuals than light trap samples taken simultaneously in a similar forest some 6 km away from the present sampling site.
5. The data show that the effect of intensive light trapping on the populations of Homoptera in the forest is virtually negligible.
6. For a given sample size the tropical samples are many times richer in species than samples from temperate areas.  相似文献

1. Responses to a spring warming treatment were measured on five common herbaceous species grown in outdoor microcosms in Northern England. Although elevated temperature had a beneficial effect on canopy height and plant cover in monospecific cultures of all species, strongly divergent responses to warming occurred in mixtures.
2. We show that the effect of interspecific competition was to modify and amplify the vegetation response to the warming treatment through effects on phenology and morphological development.
3. The observed responses between the species to warming are consistent with predicted differential responses linked to genome size.
4. We conclude that the mechanism of competitive interaction proposed by Boysen-Jensen (1929 ) coupled with the insights related to genome size provide a basis for explaining and predicting the role of interannual variation in temperature in determining year to year fluctuations in the relative abundance of species in productive perennial herbaceous vegetation.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Fossil diatom assemblages deposited in more than a dozen African lakes roughly 9500 years BP were dominated by a single planktonic species, Stephanodiscus astraea (Ehrcnb.) Grun. (although realistically this is likely to be a species complex). These diatoms flourished when lake-levels were maximal. Data are included from many of (he large African lakes, and others extending from Lake Abhé0, Ethiopia, to Lake Cheshi, Zambia.
2. Because the ecological physiology of Stephanodiscus species is well known one can predict the nutrient regime that must have existed when Stephanodiscus bloomed. Owing to competition for resources Stephano-discus species dominate when the supply ratio of silicon to phosphorus (in moles) in the epilimnion is relatively low (Si:P∼1). Consequently, lakes dominated by S. astraea are often hypereutrophic.
3. We propose a series of hypotheses to explain why tropical lakes have decreasing Si:P ratios as lake-levels increase, primarily owing to internal P-loading processes in the epilimnia. These observations appear to contradict present conceptions of the fundamental relationships governing nutrient loadings to and within lakes. Tropical lakes appear to have had increasing epilimnetic phosphorus loading as lake-levels increased. In contrast, large, deep lakes in the temperate zone are usually oligotrophic, with high Si:P ratios.
4. Our major conclusion is that regeneration rates are greater than removal rates for phosphorus in tropical lakes as compared to temperate lakes, especially where epilimnelic mixing exceeds 50 m. Biological control of the elemental cycles dominate in tropical lakes, whereas nutrient cycles in temperate lakes are dominated by physical processes for a large part of the year. This results in major differences in the fundamental mechanisms of nutrient regeneration and their relationships to morphometric features of lakes in the two regions.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The potential tor competition in the zooplankton of small Araucana Lake (Andes, Argentina) was tested experimentally.
2. Laboratory enrichment of lake water with nutrients resulted in an increased abundance of nannoplankton with the cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa minor predominating.
3. The dominant species of zooplankton showed contrasting responses to enrichment: the abundance of Bosmina longirostris increased, whereas that of Ceriodaphnia dubia decreased relative to the corresponding controls.
4. The clearance rates for various nannoplankton by these cladocerans were similar, resulting in high niche overlap as estimated by the Pianka index.
5. Life table experiments showed that when fed on a pure suspension of lake flagellates (103 cells ml−1) Ceriodaphnia had a significantly higher average intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r ) than on a suspension of Gloeocapsa (0.28 v . 0.146); in the case of Bosmina no significant differences for the two foods were found (0.182 and 0.141, respectively).
6. The contrasting responses of the animals to enrichment are explained by the differing suitability of particular nannoplankton species as food for different cladoceran species. The seasonal succession in the species composition and food quality of nannoplankton may be important for the coexistence of competing zooplankters in lakes.  相似文献

1. The spacing of branches along central stems was related to growth rate and light level in forest saplings and trees in tropical moist forest on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. The study included 14 species with tiers of plagiotropic branches (having planar leaf arrangements) and four species with continuous distributions of plagiotropic branches.
2. All species showed increases in branch spacing with increasing light and growth rate of diameter, similar to the patterns in leaf spacing noted previously in species which initially bear large leaves on unbranched stems.
3. Non-tiered species had shorter internodes than tiered species but because the latter bear more branches per node, both groups had similar numbers of branches per unit stem length, when compared at similar growth rates.
4. Differences in the relationship between internode length and growth rate among tiered species were related to demographic characteristics, suggesting that tree architecture may influence forest composition.
5. The strong correlation observed between branch spacing and growth rate suggests that branch spacing may be used to estimate past growth histories of forest tree species with plagiotropic branches.  相似文献

1.  The insurance hypothesis predicts a stabilizing effect of increasing species richness on community and ecosystem properties. Difference among species' responses to environmental fluctuations provides a general mechanism for the hypothesis. Previous experimental investigations of the insurance hypothesis have not examined this mechanism directly.
2.  First, responses to temperature of four protist species were measured in laboratory microcosms. For each species, we measured the response of intrinsic rate of increase ( r ) and carrying capacity ( K ) to temperature.
3.  Next, communities containing pairs of species were exposed to temperature fluctuations. Community biomass varied less when correlation in K between species (but not r ) was more negative, and this resulted from more negative covariances in population sizes, as predicted. Results were contingent on species identity, with findings differing between analyses including or not including communities containing one particular species.
4.  These findings provide the clearest support to date for this mechanism of the insurance hypothesis. Biodiversity, in terms of differences in species' responses to environmental fluctuations (i.e. functional response diversity) stabilizes community dynamics.  相似文献

Aim  Relationships between range size and species richness are contentious, yet they are key to testing the various hypotheses that attempt to explain latitudinal diversity gradients. Our goal is to utilize the largest data set yet compiled for New World woody plant biogeography to describe and assess these relationships between species richness and range size.
Location  North and South America.
Methods  We estimated the latitudinal extent of 12,980 species of woody plants (trees, shrubs, lianas). From these estimates we quantified latitudinal patterns of species richness and range size. We compared our observations with expectations derived from two null models.
Results   Peak richness and the smallest- and largest-ranged species are generally found close to the equator. In contrast to prominent diversity hypotheses: (1) mean latitudinal extent of tropical species is greater than expected; (2) latitudinal extent appears to be decoupled from species richness across New World latitudes, with abrupt transitions across subtropical latitudes; and (3) mean latitudinal extents show equatorial and north temperate peaks and subtropical minima. Our results suggest that patterns of range size and richness appear to be influenced by three broadly overlapping biotic domains (biotic provinces) for New World woody plants.
Main conclusions  Hypotheses that assume a direct relationship between range size and species richness may explain richness patterns within these domains, but cannot explain gradients in richness across the New World.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. This review considers the periodic cycles of species dominance in a wide selection of temperate lakes. By ascribing individual species to assemblages, a high incidence of similarity among periodic cycles is demonstrated. Reference to lakes at high and low latitudes, as well as to rivers, shows conformity to parts of the same broad patterns.
2. The role of population dynamics in shaping community structure is emphasized. Two types of change are recognized: autogenic, undirectional subsequences (successions), regulated by specific responses to critically changing resource-ratio gradients; and allogenic changes, regulated by variability in the physical environment.
3. Analysis of the responses of representative species to allogenic change permits further grouping of the assemblages. These groupings coincide with clear morphological distinctions among the same phytoplankton species according to their unit sizes and surface area/volume ratios.
4. It is argued that these properties condition the physiological responses of algae to seasonal variations in temperature, mixing and exposure to the underwater light field. The responses are compounded by relative resistances to loss processes (sinking, grazing), by short-term photosynthetic adaptation and vertical migratory behaviour.
5. Graphical summaries are presented that relate the morphologically-, physiologically- and behaviourally-mediated responses to a hierarchy of physical, chemical and biotic environmental variables. Phytoplankton periodicity is the outcome of these interactions.  相似文献
