The exclusive use of characters coding for specific life stages may bias tree reconstruction. If characters from several life stages are coded, the type of coding becomes important. Here, we simulate the influence on tree reconstruction of morphological characters of Odonata larvae incorporated into a data matrix based on the adult body under different coding schemes. For testing purposes, our analysis is focused on a well‐supported hypothesis: the relationships of the suborders Zygoptera, ‘Anisozygoptera’, and Anisoptera. We studied the cephalic morphology of Epiophlebia, a key taxon among Odonata, and compared it with representatives of Zygoptera and Anisoptera in order to complement the data matrix. Odonate larvae are characterized by a peculiar morphology, such as the specific head form, mouthpart configuration, ridge configuration, cephalic musculature, and leg and gill morphology. Four coding strategies were used to incorporate the larval data: artificial coding (AC), treating larvae as independent terminal taxa; non‐multistate coding (NMC), preferring the adult life stage; multistate coding (MC); and coding larval and adult characters separately (SC) within the same taxon. As expected, larvae are ‘monophyletic’ in the AC strategy, but with anisopteran and zygopteran larvae as sister groups. Excluding larvae in the NMC approach leads to strong support for both monophyletic Odonata and Epiprocta, whereas MC erodes phylogenetic signal completely. This is an obvious result of the larval morphology leading to many multistate characters. SC results in the strongest support for Odonata, and Epiprocta receives the same support as with NMC. Our results show the deleterious effects of larval morphology on tree reconstruction when multistate coding is applied. Coding larval characters separately is still the best approach in a phylogenetic framework. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

There is a growing need to identify effective and efficient biological indicators for wetland assessment, and adult damselflies and dragonflies (Insecta: Odonata) possess several attributes that make them attractive for this application. We introduce a general indicator of freshwater wetland condition based on objectively estimated adult Odonata species conservatism, or sensitivity to human disturbances. We used an extensive opportunistic survey dataset from Rhode Island (USA) to empirically assign a coefficient of conservatism (CoC) to each of 135 Odonata species, based on their exclusivity to categories of degradation among 510 wetlands; the mean CoC of species observed in the adult stage was applied as an index of wetland integrity. An independent sample of 51 wetlands was also drawn from the opportunistic survey to test the performance of the index relative to human disturbance, as measured by multimetric rapid assessment and surrounding impervious surface area. The index was well predicted by both disturbance measures and showed no evidence of dependence on sampling effort, wetland size, or geomorphic class. Our findings suggest that conservatism of adult Odonata averaged across species may provide a robust indicator of freshwater wetland condition. And because adult Odonata are generally easy to identify, especially relative to larval Odonata, the index could be particularly useful for wetland assessment. Our straightforward empirical approach to CoC estimation could be applied to other existing spatially referenced Odonata datasets or to other species assemblages.  相似文献

Aquatic feeding strikes on agile prey in snake-necked turtlesinvolve fast neck extension, bucco-pharyngo-oesophageal expansion,and head retraction. The ultimate, rectilinear accelerationof the head towards the prey requires complex vertebral rotations,that vary widely from strike to strike. This poses complex motorcontrol issues for the numerous intrinsic neck-muscles, whichare the sole neck extensors. Mathematical modelling revealsthat extensor activity might be superfluous for this phase ofthe strike. The ultimate acceleration of the head at the endof the strike always coincides with forceful oropharyngeal expansion.The momentum of the induced flow of water is sufficient to pullthe head (and the neck) straight towards the prey. This buccalexpansion proceeds identically to that observed in primary aquaticfeeders: a rostro-caudal expansion sequence characterized byan optimal timing of the functional components supporting theexpansion wave. Yet distinct structural solutions, both at theskeletal, and muscular level, are involved. This points towardsprominent hydrodynamic constraints. Head and neck are retractedby extrinsic neck muscles. Given the high number of degreesof freedom, this musculo-skeletal system is obviously under-determined,which compromises control. We propose that erroneous foldingof the neck (i.e., diverging from the highly persistent retractedconfiguration) might be avoided through the presence of a subtleclick system at the level of the joint between cervical vertebrae5 and 6.  相似文献

Background: CYP1A1 is one of the commonest genes which had been widely investigated to find the risk of various malignancies in different ethnic groups. The polymorphism in these genes with a combination of environmental exposure has been hypothesized to confer a differential risk of cancer for individuals carrying these genetic variants. Based on this model, individuals with higher CYP1A1 activity would be at increased risk of cancer when exposed to high levels of smoke components. The proposed mechanism involves cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1), a gene that is inducible by xenobiotics to produce genetic susceptibility for malignancies. Patients and procedures: We performed a case–control study in 205 cases with histopathologically confirmed squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck and reported habits of bidi or cigarettes smoking and 245 similar controls to investigate the role of CYP1A1 polymorphisms in the risk of head and neck cancers especially among smokers of Hyderabad Indian population. Venous blood samples (5 ml) were collected from patients and control groups; genomic DNA was extracted and used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to determine the genotypes. RFLP assays were designed to detect each of the variant CYP1A1 alleles. Results and discussion: CYP1A1m1/m1 genotype (OR = 8.12, 95% CI: 3.27–21.30) and CYP1A1w1/m1 showed elevated risk when compared with CYP1A1w1/w1. Similarly CYP1A1w2/m2 (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 0.94–2.67) and CYP1A1m2/m2 (OR = 6.31, 95% CI: 2.74–18.69) genotypes also showed elevated risk when compared with CYP1A1w2/w2 genotype. This data demonstrated that smoking was a risk factor for head and neck cancers. The m2 mutations were in close linkage disequilibrium with the m1 mutations; 53% m1 mutants had the mutation in the m2 site. Conclusion: Those individuals carrying at least one CYP1A1 m1 or m2 variant allele were at a 2-fold elevated risk for head and neck cancer. Our data clearly demonstrates that CYP1A1 is an important determinant in susceptibility to tobacco-induced head and neck carcinogens and there is an association between genetic polymorphism in the CYP1A1 locus and elevated risk of the type of smoking among Indians. This appears to be a new and important prognostic and diagnostic marker for determining the risk of head and neck cancers genetically.  相似文献

An efficient method for gross-motion simulation of head/neck dynamics in accidents and high acceleration environments is presented. The method uses finite-segment modelling to develop a 3-body model of the head/neck system. The model is shown to compare favorably with an analogous 9-body model and with experimental data. The model is expected to be useful for: efficient analysis of gross-motion head/neck dynamics during accidents; for developing increased intuitive understanding of head/neck behavior; and for use with gross-motion, whole-body, crash-victim simulators.  相似文献

 We present a controls systems model of horizontal-plane head movements during perturbations of the trunk, which for the first time interfaces a model of the human head with neural feedback controllers representing the vestibulocollic (VCR) and the cervicocollic (CCR) reflexes. This model is homeomorphic such that model structure and parameters are drawn directly from anthropomorphic, biomechanical and physiological studies. Using control theory we analyzed the system model in the time and frequency domains, simulating neck movement responses to input perturbations of the trunk. Without reflex control, the head and neck system produced a second-order underdamped response with a 5.2 dB resonant peak at 2.1 Hz. Adding the CCR component to the system dampened the response by approximately 7%. Adding the VCR component dampened head oscillations by 75%. The VCR also improved low-frequency compensation by increasing the gain and phase lag, creating a phase minimum at 0.1 Hz and a phase peak at 1.1 Hz. Combining all three components (mechanics, VCR and CCR) linearly in the head and neck system reduced the amplitude of the resonant peak to 1.1 dB and increased the resonant frequency to 2.9 Hz. The gonangulum is a sclerite in the female genitalic region of insects. Its presence or full development has long been considered an apomorphy supporting Zygentoma + Pterygota. Recent studies of female genitalia in several insect orders (K.-D. Klass and co-workers) revealed many new data on the gonangulum and homologous sclerotisations (laterocoxa LC9). Herein the gonangulum area is described (including articulations, muscle attachments, sulci) and compared among Archaeognatha, Zygentoma, Odonata, Dermaptera, Dictyoptera, and Notoptera. A wider perspective is provided to the topic by addressing some novel issues: identification of LC9 sclerotisations in non-insect taxa and in insects that secondarily lack an ovipositor; occurrence of homonomous sclerotisations in other abdominal segments of both sexes; morphological interpretation of LC9; and the role of paedomorphosis in LC9 evolution. As a result, there is currently no support for any insect lineage from this character system. For gonangulum-related characters both a significant intra-ordinal variation and frequent homoplasy are demonstrated using various Odonata, Dermaptera, and Dictyoptera as examples. Divergent fates of LC9 in simplified genitalia are shown using a dermapteran and an odonatan. We view all this as a showcase of how a renewed and more detailed examination of a character system can dramatically change the phylogenetic evidence drawn from it.  相似文献

Objectives:  Ideally, head and neck aspiration should be performed by trained aspirators within the setting of a one-stop clinic, where smeared material is available for immediate assessment. However, this may not always be possible for practical reasons and the use of liquid-based techniques in head and neck cytology is increasing. Although liquid-based cytology has been extensively validated for use in gynaecological cytology, no studies have investigated whether or not a single ThinPrep ® slide is representative for head and neck aspirate specimens. We performed a prospective audit of head and neck fine needle aspiration specimens processed by the ThinPrep ® method to investigate whether a single ThinPrep ® slide was representative.
Methods:  A prospective audit of 115 consecutive head and neck aspirates was carried out. A single ThinPrep ® slide was prepared and a diagnosis recorded. The remainder of the specimen was then spun down and prepared as a cell block. The ThinPrep ® and cell block diagnoses were compared.
Results:  In 36 cases (31%), the cell block provided additional information that contributed to the diagnosis. In 14 (12%), the cell block was regarded as essential to the diagnosis.
Conclusions:  A single ThinPrep® slide may not provide representative diagnostic material in all head and neck aspirates. This should be taken into consideration when contemplating the use of liquid-based methods for non-gynaecological cytology.  相似文献

It is becoming clearly evident that single gene or single environmental factor cannot explain susceptibility to diseases with complex etiology such as head and neck cancer. In this study, we applied the multifactor dimensionality reduction method to explore potential gene-environment and gene-gene interactions that may contribute to predisposition to head and neck cancer in the North Indian population. We genotyped 203 patients with head and neck cancer and 201 healthy controls for 13 functional polymorphisms in genes coding for tobacco metabolizing enzymes; CYP1A1, CYP2A13, GSTM1, and UGT1A7 using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method, real-time polymerase chain reaction quantitative assay, and denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography followed by direct sequencing. We found that GSTM1 copy number variations were the most influential factor for head and neck cancer. We also observed significant gene-gene interactions among GSTM1 copy number variants, CYP1A1 T3801C and UGT1A7 T622C variants among smokers. Multifactor dimensionality reduction approach showed that the three-factor model, including smoking status, CYP1A1 T3801C, and GSTM1 copy number variants, conferred more than fourfold increased risk of head and neck cancer (odds ratio 4.89; 95% confidence interval: 3.15-7.32, p?相似文献

The surface morphology of Stictodora tridactyla recovered from a kitten that was fed the killifish, Aphanius dispar, naturally infected with the metacercariae was studied using scanning electron microscopy. The body comprised a rounded head, elongate neck, and widely pyriform hind-body. The head bore a circular oral sucker on the ventral side, and concentric rows of peg-like cephalic spines on the dorsal side. The oral sucker was armed with pre-oral spines similar in shape and size to the cephalic spines. The neck and hind-body were densely covered with scale-like multipointed spines, the size and density of which decreased from anterior to posterior parts of the body. Ciliated dome-shaped papillae were found solitarily or as conjugated groups on the head apex and lips of the oral sucker. Non-ciliated dome-shaped papillae were restricted to the lower lip of the oral sucker. The body was devoid of a ventral sucker. The genital opening appeared as a round depression of the tegument at about the anterior third of the body. This is the first record of the occurrence of S. tridactyla in the Arabian Gulf region and A. dispar is a new second intermediate host.  相似文献

Background

Observational studies suggest an association between tooth loss and risk of head and neck cancer. However, whether tooth loss is an independent risk factor for head and neck cancer still remains controversial. The aim of this study is to assess the association between tooth loss and head and neck cancer risk.

Methods

Eligible studies were searched in PubMed and Embase databases from their inception to March 2013. A random-effects model or fixed-effects model was used to calculate the overall combined risk estimates.

Results

Eight case-control studies and one cross-sectional study involving 5,204 patients and 5,518 controls were included in the meta-analysis. The overall combined odds ratio for tooth loss and head and neck cancer was 2.00 (95% confidence interval, 1.28–3.14). Similar results yielded both in the moderate and severe tooth loss group. Sensitivity analysis based on various exclusion criteria maintained this significance with respect to head and neck cancer individually. Little evidence of publication bias was observed.

Conclusion

This meta-analysis suggests that tooth loss is associated with increased risk of head and neck cancer. This increase is probably independent of conventional head and neck cancer risk factors.  相似文献

Overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Her2, and uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD) occurs in a variety of malignant tumor tissues. UROD has potential to modulate tumor response of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, and EGFR and Her2 are common drug targets for the treatment of head and neck cancer. This study attempts to find a possible lead compound backbone from TCM Database@Taiwan (http://tcm.cmu.edu.tw/) for EGFR, Her2, and UROD proteins against head and neck cancer using computational techniques. Possible traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) lead compounds had potential binding affinities with EGFR, Her2, and UROD proteins. The candidates formed stable interactions with residues Arg803, Thr854 in EGFR, residues Thr862, Asp863 in Her2 protein, and residues Arg37, Arg41 in UROD protein, which are key residues in the binding or catalytic domain of EGFR, Her2, and UROD proteins. Thus, the TCM candidates indicated a possible molecule backbone for evolving potential inhibitors for three drug target proteins against head and neck cancer.

The human trapezius muscle has an origin that is more extensive than that of any other body muscle; it has a complex macroscopic structure with fibers running in different directions. Histochemical analysis of multiple samples, obtained from different parts of the trapezius muscle from five males, showed marked differences in the distribution and the cross-sectional fiber area of the fiber types among different parts of the muscle as well as among individuals. As revealed by the mATPase activity, after different levels of alkaline and acidic preincubations, the lower third of the descending portion, the transverse, and the ascending portions of the muscle had a predominance of type I fibers (low mATPase activity at pH 9.4), whereas the most superior parts of pars descendens had a higher frequency of type II fibers (high mATPase activity at pH 9.4). The fibers of the most superior parts of the muscle were considerably smaller compared with those in all the other parts. In sections stained for NADH-TR, moth-eaten fibers were observed within parts of the descending portion. Their location and their larger fiber area, compared with that of ordinary type I fibers, may be related to frequent and/or continuous use of these fibers. In conclusion, the differences in fiber type composition between the different parts of the muscle probably reflect different functional demands on the trapezius muscle in various head, neck, and shoulder movements. We suggest that the interindividual differences in muscle fiber composition are due, at least in part, to genetic factors.  相似文献

Background: Socio-economic differences in survival from head and neck cancers are among the largest of any malignancies. Population-based data have been unable to explain these differences. Aims: To describe survival from head and neck cancers in a large cohort of patients for whom a range of socio-economic, demographic, behavioural and casemix data was available. Methods: Prospective cohort study using data from the Scottish Head and Neck Audit on all patients diagnosed with a head and neck cancer in Scotland between 1st September 1999 and 31st August 2001 linked to General Register Office for Scotland death records to 30th June 2006. Cox proportional hazards models were produced to describe adjusted hazards of death according to socio-economic circumstances, using validated area-based DEPCAT scores. Results: Data on 1909 patients were analysed. 71.0% were male and mean age was 64.3 (SD 12.2) years. Overall 5-year survival was 45.6% (95% CI: 43.4–47.8%). In order of strength of association in univariate regression, World Health Organisation Performance Status, disease stage, patient age, tumour site, smoking status, alcohol use, tumour differentiation, and deprivation were significant predictors of all-cause mortality but after multiple adjustment, deprivation was no longer an independent predictor of survival. Conclusions: Socio-economic differentials in survival from head and neck cancers are determined by a mixture of risk factors, some of which may be amenable to targeted earlier detection methods and lifestyle interventions. However, further research is needed to understand the impacts of performance status in more deprived patients.  相似文献

Adipokinetic neuropeptides from the corpora cardiaca of the major families of all three suborders of the Odonata were identified by one or more of the following methods: (1) Isolation of the peptides from a methanolic extract of the corpora cardiaca by liquid chromatography, peak monitoring by fluorescence of the Trp residue and comparison of the retention time with those of known synthetic peptides of Odonata. (2) Hyperlipaemic bioassays of the HPLC-generated fractions either in Locusta migratoria or, in a few cases, in Anax imperator or Orthetrum julia. (3) Sequencing of the isolated, bioactive HPLAC fraction by Edman degradation. (4) Mass spectrometric measurement of the isolated, bioactive fraction. Sequence assignment revealed that the investigated Odonata species always contain only one adipokinetic peptide. This is always an octapeptide. The suborder Zygoptera contains the peptide code-named Psein-AKH, the Anisozygoptera and the families Aeshnidae, Cordulegastridae and Macromiidae of the Anisoptera contain Anaim-AKH, whereas Gomphidae, Corduliidae (with the exception of Syncordulia gracilis) and Libellulidae contain Libau-AKH; one species of Libellulidae has Erysi-AKH, a very conservative modification of Libau-AKH (one point mutation). When these structural data are interpreted in conjunction with existing phylogenies of Odonata, they support the following: (1) Zygoptera are monophyletic and not paraphyletic. (2) Anisozygoptera and Anisoptera are sister groups and contain the ancestral Anaim-AKH which is independently and convergently mutated to Libau-AKH in Gomphidae and Libellulidae. (3) The Corduliidae are of special interest. Only Corduliidae sensu stricto appear to contain Libau-AKH, other species placed into this family by most authorities contain the ancestral Anaim-AKH. Possibly, assignments of AKHs can untangle the paraphyly of this family.  相似文献

Background

The prevention of head injuries in alpine activities has focused on helmets. However, no systematic review has examined the effect of helmets on head and neck injuries among skiers and snowboarders.

Methods

We searched electronic databases, conference proceedings and reference lists using a combination of the key words “head injury or head trauma,” “helmet” and “skiing or snowboarding.” We included studies that used a control group; compared skiers or snowboarders with and without helmets; and measured at least one objectively quantified outcome (e.g., head injury, and neck or cervical injury).

Results

We included 10 case–control, 1 case–control/case-crossover and 1 cohort study in our analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) indicated that skiers and snowboarders with a helmet were significantly less likely than those without a helmet to have a head injury (OR 0.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.55–0.79). The result was similar for studies that used controls without an injury (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.36–0.92), those that used controls with an injury other than a head or neck injury (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.52–0.80) and studies that included children under the age of 13 years (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.27–0.59). Helmets were not associated with an increased risk of neck injury (OR 0.89, 95% CI 0.72–1.09).

Interpretation

Our findings show that helmets reduce the risk of head injury among skiers and snowboarders with no evidence of an increased risk of neck injury.Skiing and snowboarding are popular winter activities.1 Estimates from numerous countries indicate that head injuries account for 9% to 19%, and neck injuries for 1% to 4%, of all injuries reported by ski patrols and emergency departments.211 Rates of head and neck injuries have been reported between 0.09 and 0.46 per 1000 outings.12 Head and neck injuries are disproportionately represented in cases of severe trauma, and traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and serious injury among skiers and snow-boarders.13 As far back as 1983, Oh and Schmid recommended mandatory helmet use for children while skiing.14Many studies of the relation between helmet use and head injuries among skiers and snowboarders have found a protective effect.1524 It has been suggested that the use of helmets may increase the risk of neck injury in a crash or fall.25 This may be more evident among children because they have a greater head:body ratio than adults, and the additional size and weight of the helmet may increase the risk of neck injury in an otherwise routine fall.26 We conducted a systematic review of the effect of helmets on head and neck injuries among skiers and snowboarders.  相似文献

Monophyly of the pterygote insects is generally accepted, but the relationships among the three basal branches (Odonata, Ephemeroptera and Neoptera) remain controversial. The traditional view, to separate the pterygote insects in Palaeoptera (Odonata + Ephemeroptera) and Neoptera, based on the ability or inability to fold the wings over the abdomen, has been questioned. Various authors have used different sets of morphological characters in support of all three possible arrangements of the basal pterygote branches. We sequenced 18S and 28S rDNA from 18 species of Odonata, 8 species of Ephemeroptera, 2 species of Neoptera, and 1 species of Archaeognatha in our study. The new sequences, in combination with sequences from GenBank, have been used in a parsimony jackknife analysis resulting in strong support for a monophyletic Palaeoptera. Morphological evidence and the phylogenetic implications for understanding the origin of insect flight are discussed.  相似文献

1. It is increasingly realised that aquatic and terrestrial systems are closely linked. We investigated stable isotope variations in Odonata species, putative prey and basal resources of aquatic and terrestrial systems of northern Mongolia during summer. 2. In permanent ponds, δ13C values of Odonata larvae were distinctly lower than those of putative prey, suggesting that body tissue comprised largely of carbon originating from isotopically light carbon sources. Presumably, prey consumed during autumn and winter when carbon is internally recycled and/or methanotrophic bacteria form an important basal resource of the food web. In contrast, in a temporary pond, δ13C values of Odonata larvae were similar to those of putative prey, indicating that their body carbon originated mainly from prey species present. 3. Changes in δ15N and δ13C values between larvae and adults were species specific and reflected differential replacement of the larval isotopic signature by the terrestrial diet of adult Odonata. The replacement was more pronounced in Odonata species of permanent ponds than in those of the temporary pond, where larvae hatched later in the year. Replacement of larval carbon varied between tissues, with wings representing the larval isotopic signature whereas thoracic muscles and eggs reflected the δ15N and δ13C values of the terrestrial diet of adults. 4. The results suggest that because of their long larval development, Odonata species of permanent ponds carry the larval signature, which is partly replaced during their terrestrial life. Terrestrial prey forms the basis for egg production and thus the next generation of aquatic larvae. In temporary ponds, in contrast, Odonata species rely on prey from a single season, engage in a prolonged aquatic phase and hatch later, leaving less time to acquire terrestrial prey resources for offspring production. Stable isotope analysis provided important insights into the food webs of the waterbodies and their relationship to the terrestrial system.  相似文献

1. Insects that emerge from rivers provide nutritional subsidies to local riparian predators. Adult damselflies and dragonflies often benefit from aquatic resources, but their high mobility and evasiveness have made it difficult to monitor their diets. 2. A dual fatty acid and stable isotope analysis approach was used to investigate the links between Odonata size and behaviour with proportions of their aquatically derived nutritional sources. Additionally, the study investigated the variation in dietary contributions of aquatic food sources to Odonata between two sections of a river, each with different aquatic productivity rates. 3. Variations in body size and foraging method of Odonata in the Kowie River (South Africa) contributed to differences in the contributions of aquatic food sources to their diets. Large Odonata that consumed prey in flight had smaller proportions of aquatic indicator fatty acids and stable isotope‐generated proportions of aquatic food sources than did the smaller Odonata that consumed prey from perches. 4. There was a considerable amount of interspecific variation in indicators of aquatic feeding, but Odonata at an upstream site had smaller proportions of aquatic indicators than those at a downstream site which had higher insect emergence rates. 5. The findings of this study contribute information on the dynamics of feeding ecology among adult Odonata, and the substantial contributions of aquatic prey (>80% of total diet in some cases) indicated that cross‐boundary trophic linkages via odonates are strong in the Kowie River.  相似文献
