Elaboration of costly sexual traits can reduce investment inother aspects of reproduction, such as parental care or intrasexualcompetition, which may lead to the evolution of alternativemating tactics. In house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), lesselaborately ornamented (dull) males tend to dominate more elaborated(redder) males, but redder males pair earlier and invest morein parental care. This suggests that males may pursue alternativeparental or competitive tactics, depending on the elaborationof their sexual trait. Elevation of testosterone, a hormonethat is closely associated with condition in male house finches, influences dominance and sexual behaviors but is antagonisticto parental behaviors. We tested the hypothesis that the higherdominance status of dull males reflects an alternative testosterone-dependentmating tactic. First, we experimentally manipulated the testosteronelevels of captive males and measured the effect on dominancerank, and second, we measured the association of testosteroneelevation and plumage hue in free-living males. We found that,as predicted, testosterone elevation increased dominance rankin captive males. However, in free-living males, testosteronelevels were higher in redder males, suggesting that testosteroneis dissociated from dominance status under natural circumstances. This may be because the context of social interactions and thehigher motivation of dull males to access food resources havea stronger influence on the outcome of dominance interactionsthan does the physiological effects of testosterone elevation. In turn, the strong positive correlation between testosteronelevels and plumage elaboration likely reflects the common conditiondependence of these traits. 相似文献

Most animals are male/female species and reproduce sexually. Variation in this pattern of reproduction has arisen many times during animal evolution, particularly in nematodes. Little is known about the evolutionary forces and constraints that influenced the origin of self-fertilization, for instance, a type of reproduction that seems to have evolved many times in the phylum Nematoda. Caenorhabditis elegans, a very well known nematode, provides the framework for comparative studies of sex determination. The relative ease with which nematodes can be studied in the laboratory and the fact that many recently developed techniques can be applied to many species make them attractive for comparative research. It is relatively poorly understood how the evolution of new types of sex determination and mode of reproduction results in changes in genome structure, ecology and population genetics. Here, I review the evolution of sex determination and mating types in the phylum Nematoda with the objective of providing a framework for future research. 相似文献

Whether to be male or female is a critical decision in development. Nowhere is this more important than in the germ cells, which must produce either the sperm or eggs necessary for the perpetuation of the species. How does a germ cell make this decision and how is it executed? One thing that is clear is that this process is very different in germ cells compared with other cells of the embryo. Here, we explore how sexual identity is established in the Drosophila germline, how this affects other aspects of germ cell development and what studies in Drosophila can teach us about mammalian germ cells. 相似文献

Early nutrition has recently been shown to have pervasive, downstream effects on adult life-history parameters including lifespan, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Damage to biomolecules caused by oxidants, such as free radicals generated during metabolic processes, is widely recognized as a key contributor to somatic degeneration and the rate of ageing. Lipophilic antioxidants (carotenoids, vitamins A and E) are an important component of vertebrate defences against such damage. By using an avian model, we show here that independent of later nutrition, individuals experiencing a short period of low-quality nutrition during the nestling period had a twofold reduction in plasma levels of these antioxidants at adulthood. We found no effects on adult external morphology or sexual attractiveness: in mate-choice trials females did not discriminate between adult males that had received standard- or lower-quality diet as neonates. Our results suggest low-quality neonatal nutrition resulted in a long-term impairment in the capacity to assimilate dietary antioxidants, thereby setting up a need to trade off the requirement for antioxidant activity against the need to maintain morphological development and sexual attractiveness. Such state-dependent trade-offs could underpin the link between early nutrition and senescence. 相似文献

Background
An individual's fitness in part depends on the characteristics of the mate so that sexually attractive ornaments, as signals of quality, are used in mate choice. Often such ornaments develop already early in life and thus are affected by nutritional conditions experienced then. Individuals thus should benefit by compensating as soon as possible for poor initial development of ornaments, to be attractive already at sexual maturity. Here, we tested whether early nutritional stress affects the cheek patch size of male Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), which are important in mate choice, and whether a small cheek patch size early on is compensated at sexual maturation. Furthermore we tested whether exploration behaviour is affected by such a compensation, as shown for other compensatory growth trajectories. Results
Zebra finch males which were raised under poorer nutritional conditions initially expressed smaller cheek patches at day 50 post-hatching but then compensated in cheek patch size already at 65 days, i.e. when becoming sexually mature. Furthermore, compensatory growth in cheek patch during adolescence was negatively correlated with activity and exploration behaviour, measured in a novel environment. Conclusion
This compensation in cheek patch size benefits male attractiveness but also was related to less exploration behaviour, an established proxy for avian personality traits. We discuss the possibility that compensatory priorities exist so that not all deficits from a bad start are caught-up at the same time. Resource allocation to compensate for poorly expressed traits is likely to have evolved to optimise traits by the time they are most beneficial.6.

Resolving the persistence of sexual reproduction despite its overwhelming costs (known as the paradox of sex) is one of the most persistent challenges of evolutionary biology. In thinking about this paradox, the focus has traditionally been on the evolutionary benefits of genetic recombination in generating offspring diversity and purging deleterious mutations. The similarity of pattern between evolution of organisms and evolution among cancer cells suggests that the asexual process generates more diverse genomes owing to less controlled reproduction systems, while sexual reproduction generates more stable genomes because the sexual process can serve as a mechanism to "filter out" aberrations at the chromosome level. Our reinterpretation of data from the literature strongly supports this hypothesis. Thus, the principal consequence of sexual reproduction is the reduction of drastic genetic diversity at the genome or chromosome level, resulting in the preservation of species identity rather than the provision of evolutionary diversity for future environmental challenges. Genetic recombination does contribute to genetic diversity, but it does so secondarily and within the framework of the chromosomally defined genome. 相似文献

Summary The concept of the difference between the potential for a trait and the trait proper, i.e., between the genotype and the phenotype, became clear only during the first decade of the century, mainly through the work of Johannsen. Although Johannsen insisted on that the terms he coined were only helpful devices to organize data about heredity, it is obvious that they were bound from the beginning to the hypothesis that there was something in the gametes that could be rendered to analysis as discrete units. These units were the genes. This reductionist yet materially non-committed attitude has been developed into what I called instrumental-reductionism: the genes were hypothetical constructs that were accepted as if they were real entities. The research program developed on such a concept was very successful, not least because this instrumental approach allowed maximum flexibility in the attachment of meaning of the genes. While most geneticists accepted one or another position of this flexible concept, others took more extreme positions. At the one extreme end of the conceptual continuum was the realist approach that argued that genes were discrete, measurable, material particles, and on the other end, the claim that the attempts to identify discrete units only led to hyperatomism of a holistic view appropriate to heredity. The acceptance of the gene as a material and discrete unit, in the beginning of 1950s, opened the way to a deeper level of conceptualizing both its structure (cistron-recon-muton) and function (one gene—one enzyme). The discovery of the structure of DNA finally offered a chemical-physical explanation to the geneticist's requirements of a material gene. Thus, within less than 20 years the gene has been established as a sharply limited segment of the linear structure that is involved in the structrue of a product or its regulation. However, with turning of much of the attention to the eucaryotic DNA, it was necessary to accommodate the gene to an increasing flood of findings that did not tally with its concept as a discrete material unit. Without much heart-seeking among geneticists, the gene regained its role as an instrumental unit, or even as just an intervening variable, a quantity obtained by specified manipulation of the values of empirical variables. Though this flexibility demonstrated again that the most fruitful concepts are those to which it is impossible to attach a well defined meaning, it brought us also into a situation in which the same term has a different meaning for each group of scientists. In order to avoid the danger to be scattered over the face of all the earth because of lack of communicable language, it might be advisable to halt a little and reflect on the meaning of our concepts and their function. 相似文献

Estrogen accumulation in zebra finch song control nuclei: implications for sexual differentiation and adult activation of song behavior 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In zebra finches the gonadal steroid estradiol (E2) directs the sexual differentiation of neural regions controlling song and synergizes with androgens to stimulate song in adulthood. To identify regions where E2 may act to exert these effects, steroid autoradiographic techniques were used to assess cellular accumulation of 3[H]-E2 or its metabolites within various nuclei of the zebra finch brain. In Experiment 1 we examined brains from juvenile females, still within the critical period for E2's effect on sexual differentiation. In Experiment 2 the pattern and extent of labeling in adult male brains was determined following injection of 3[H]-E2, 3[H]-testosterone, or 3[H]-dihydrotestosterone. The results suggest that, both during development and in adulthood, most song-control nuclei contain few E2-accumulating cells. In contrast, many cells densely labeled by 3[H]-E2 or its metabolites are present in the hypothalamus and in close proximity to one song-control region, the hyperstriatum ventralis pars caudalis (HVc). The distribution of these latter cells overlaps with cells that project to another song-related nucleus, Area X. Thus, in Experiment 3 fluorescent retrograde tracing and steroid autoradiographic techniques were combined to determine if E2-accumulating cells project to Area X in adult males. Although a few retrogradely labeled cells were lightly labeled by 3[H]-E2 or its metabolites, for the most part these appear to be two distinct populations of cells. The sparse accumulation of E2 in the zebra finch song system contrasts with that described in other song birds and has important implications as to the mechanism of E2 action on the developing and mature song system. 相似文献

Exogenous estrogens, when administered to hatchling female zebra finches, masculinize the morphology and function of their neural vocal control system. The first of two experiments evaluated whether tamoxifen citrate is an antiestrogen in zebra finches, and the second determined whether it would block the masculinization hypothesized to be caused in hatchling males by the males' endogenous estradiol. In the first experiment adult female zebra finches were ovariectomized and injected for 10 days with estradiol benzoate (EB), tamoxifen, EB and tamoxifen combined, or vehicle (control). The dependent variable was oviduct weight. The EB-stimulated growth of the oviduct was blocked by tamoxifen, which had no effects when administered alone. Thus, tamoxifen acts as an antiestrogen in the zebra finch oviduct. In Experiment 2, male and female zebra finches were treated with tamoxifen or vehicle for the first 20 days after hatching. The males were castrated at 20 days. At 60 days we compared the song control regions of experimental and control males and females. In both sexes tamoxifen increased the somatic areas of neurons in RA (robust nucleus of the archistriatum), HVc (caudal nucleus of the ventral hyperstriatum), and MAN (magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum). Tamoxifen also increased the volumes of HVc, RA, MAN, and Area X in males. Thus, tamoxifen failed to block masculinization of males, but masculinized females and hypermasculinized males. Tamoxifen's hypermasculinization of the male and masculinization of the female song system is paradoxical given that (1) estradiol does not have similar effects on the male song system, and (2) tamoxifen antagonizes the effects of EB in the oviduct. 相似文献

Host concealment: a determinant for host acceptance and feeding in an ectoparasitoid wasp 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Takatoshi Ueno 《Oikos》2000,89(2):223-230
In general, ectoparasitoids attack concealed hosts in protected situations whereas endoparasitoids use both concealed and exposed hosts. The difference is assumed to be the consequence of ecological constraints; ectoparasitic larvae are vulnerable both to predation and to climatic factors such as rainfall, and, hence, require some structures to protect themselves. I hypothesized that such ecological constraints should act as a within-species selection pressure to female ectoparasitoids, and hence that females should recognize the degree of concealment of the host and prefer concealed over exposed hosts for oviposition. To test this hypothesis, I examined 1) whether host concealment could influence host acceptance by the ectoparasitoid wasp Agrothereutes lanceolatus and 2) whether host concealment could influence the fitness of the offspring. Female wasps recognized and attacked (probed) both cocooned and exposed host prepupae in equal proportions, but discriminated between them after ovipositor insertion, and preferred the former for oviposition and the latter for host-feeding. They also selected to oviposit on hosts concealed in paper tubes. Thus host concealment was important for host selection in A. lanceolatus . Offspring fitness (measured as survival and size) was much lower on exposed hosts than on cocooned and paper-concealed hosts, even under laboratory conditions. Thus, host concealment influenced the fitness of wasp offspring, and, hence, is a good indicator of host quality for female wasps. Adaptiveness of host selection and host-feeding in A. lanceolatus in relation to host concealment is discussed. 相似文献

Black spaces, black places: Strategic assimilation and identity construction in middle-class suburbia
Karyn R. Lacy 《Ethnic and racial studies》2013,36(6):908-930
While white ethnics and immigrants of colour have been studied in terms of their attempts to assimilate into the American mainstream, sociologists assume that ongoing racial discrimination obviates the need for an extensive examination of the actual assimilation trajectories of middle-class blacks. Many middle-class blacks travel from the black to the white world rather than existing exclusively in one racially distinct environment. Yet, we do not fully understand how middle-class blacks conceptualize their own integration into American society. Drawing on data collected through in-depth interviews with middle-class blacks and ethnographic research in a white and a black suburb, I establish the link between an affinity for black spaces and the alternative assimilation trajectories of middle-class blacks. I find that middle-class blacks engage in a variant of segmented assimilation, privileging the black world as a site for socializing even if they live in a white suburb. This selective pattern of assimilation, what I term strategic assimilation, suggests that this population of middle-class blacks does not perceive itself as permanently constrained to the bottom rung of a racial hierarchy. 相似文献

Geographic variation in male ornamentation and female mate preference in the house finch: a comparative test of models of sexual selection 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:3
I compared the mate preferences of female house finches (Carpodacusmexicanus) from populations in which males differ in both plumagecoloration and the extent of ventral pigmentation (patch size).Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the small patch of ventralcoloration displayed by males in some populations is derivedfrom a larger-patched ancestral state. Regardless of the appearanceof males in their own populations, however, females from allpopulations showed a preference for the most brightly coloredmales and males with the largest patches. A reduction in patchsize independent of a change in female mate preference is notconsistent with sensory-bias or reproductive isolation modelsof sexual selection or with general predictions of runaway modelsof sexual selection. In contrast, a lack of congruence betweenfemale mate preference and male trait expression is predictedby the honest advertisement model, with house finches respondingto variation in regional and local access to carotenoid plumagepigments. 相似文献

Intensity versus identity coding in an olfactory system 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
We examined the encoding and decoding of odor identity and intensity by neurons in the antennal lobe and the mushroom body, first and second relays, respectively, of the locust olfactory system. Increased odor concentration led to changes in the firing patterns of individual antennal lobe projection neurons (PNs), similar to those caused by changes in odor identity, thus potentially confounding representations for identity and concentration. However, when these time-varying responses were examined across many PNs, concentration-specific patterns clustered by identity, resolving the apparent confound. This is because PN ensemble representations changed relatively continuously over a range of concentrations of each odorant. The PNs' targets in the mushroom body-Kenyon cells (KCs)-had sparse identity-specific responses with diverse degrees of concentration invariance. The tuning of KCs to identity and concentration and the patterning of their responses are consistent with piecewise decoding of their PN inputs over oscillation-cycle length epochs. 相似文献

Sex determination in the Drosophila germline is dictated by the sexual identity of the surrounding soma 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been suggested that sexual identity in the germline depends upon the combination of a nonautonomous somatic signaling pathway and an autonomous X chromosome counting system. In the studies reported here, we have examined the role of the sexual differentiation genes transformer (tra) and doublesex (dsx) in regulating the activity of the somatic signaling pathway. We asked whether ectopic somatic expression of the female products of the tra and dsx genes could feminize the germline of XY animals. We find that Tra(F) is sufficient to feminize XY germ cells, shutting off the expression of male-specific markers and activating the expression of female-specific markers. Feminization of the germline depends upon the constitutively expressed transformer-2 (tra-2) gene, but does not seem to require a functional dsx gene. However, feminization of XY germ cells by Tra(F) can be blocked by the male form of the Dsx protein (Dsx(M)). Expression of the female form of dsx, Dsx(F), in XY animals also induced germline expression of female markers. Taken together with a previous analysis of the effects of mutations in tra, tra-2, and dsx on the feminization of XX germ cells in XX animals, our findings indicate that the somatic signaling pathway is redundant at the level tra and dsx. Finally, our studies call into question the idea that a cell-autonomous X chromosome counting system plays a central role in germline sex determination. 相似文献
