Field observations revealed that, on a given day, male mating behaviour in a population of the grasshopper Ligurotettix coquilletti ranged from little or no stridulation (inactive) to relatively persistent singing (active signalling). Inactive males were usually located in the territories of active signallers. Actively signalling male achieved more matings, and also more frequently approached and mounted females in incidents terminating in the male departing the female without copulating. Individuals switched between inactive and actively-signalling behaviour during their adult lives, and males that were usually active signallers achieved greater lifetime mating success. Thus, we obtained no evidence to support the hypothesis that variation in mating behaviour was maintained by negative frequency-dependent selection. By comparing the behaviour of males in two field plots maintained at different population densities, however, we found that high density was directly related to a higher incidence of inactive behaviour. Males perched on creosote (Larrea tridentata) bushes (their host plant), and certain bushes. Mating behaviour was independent of body size and, while young (<7 days old) males tended to be inactive, neither age nor the time of adult maturation during the season could fully account for the incidence of inactive behaviour among males. Instead, we suggest that the adoption of inactive behaviour resulted partly from aggressive encounters between males.  相似文献

Field observations and films of laboratory encounters were used to describe and quantify behaviour in a population of Columbian ground squirrels. Activity correlated with ambient temperature. Feeding, the most frequent behaviour, decreased during mid-day whereas other behavioural patterns increased. Squirrels nearly always seemed alert, even during other behavioural patterns. Three of seven vocalizations indicated alarm. Possible adult scent-marking nerver exceeded 1 per cent of above-ground activity and decreased seasonally. Juvenile play was frequent; yearling play became more aggressive and was replaced by aggression by mid-season. Adult aggression rarely involved contact; aggression was most frequent during breeding and lactation among males and females, respectively. The behaviour of this population was similar to that observed in other populations of the same and other sciurids. Most differences cannot be explained without ecological investigation of the other populations.  相似文献

The intensity of male–male aggression during mating is predicted to increase with the operational sex ratio (OSR) (the ratio of sexually active males to females). We observed aggressive behaviour in relation to OSR within alternative phenotypes (large anadromous males and small ‘sneaker’ mature male parr) of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, as they competed for access to anadromous females in large outdoor arenas immediately prior to spawning events as well as throughout the spawning season. Anadromous males were primarily aggressive outside of spawning events, and their aggression increased with OSR over a narrow range of 0.08–4. By contrast, mature male parr were aggressive just prior to spawning, with a decrease in aggression over a broad range of OSRs from 1 to 7.4. Similarly, literature data for three other salmonid species indicated a decrease in aggression with increasing OSRs over a range of 1–6.33. These observations suggest that there is considerable variability in competitive behaviour, even within alternative phenotypes. Because our data are derived from repeated observations on the same individuals of different genetic origin, further confirmation of these findings is desirable. Nevertheless, our study underscores the importance of measuring competitive behaviour and OSR at ecologically relevant spatial and temporal scales, both of which may differ between alternative maturation phenotypes.  相似文献

Early puberty may increase lifetime reproductive success, but may also entail diverse costs. In male European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus), age at sexual maturity varies among individuals. We compared sexually active and inactive yearling males under standardized conditions in outdoor enclosures. Non-reproductive yearling males hibernated significantly longer than mature males and emerged when the mating period had already started. Testosterone concentrations peaked in the precocious males during premating and mating, and were depressed in the non-reproductive individuals throughout the study period. Emergence body mass was similar in both groups, although sexually immature males were significantly heavier at the end of the active season. Additionally, non-reproductive yearlings grew faster than precocious individuals. Male–male aggression peaked during mating and the following 4 weeks. Intense aggressive interactions like chases and fights were mostly initiated by reproductive males and were directed towards mature competitors. Aggressive behavior in immature males was mainly expressed as spatial displacements. Non-agonistic interactions with females were only observed in sexually active males. Concentrations of fecal cortisol metabolites did not differ between the two male groups and were elevated in the second half of the active season. Leucocyte numbers were reduced during mating in mature males, whereas in immature animals, cell numbers did not change significantly. Our results indicate that early puberty in European ground squirrels involves lower growth rates, high intrasexual aggression, lower prehibernatory body mass, and probably worse immunological condition during mating.  相似文献

The bush dog, Speothos venaticus , is a rare forest-dwelling South American canid. Social behaviour of a captive pack of three adult males and three adult females was observed over four years in a large enclosure. The dogs appeared to be compulsively sociable, sleeping in close physical contact, travelling together in single file, and feeding communally with minimal aggression. An alpha pair was dominant, but there was no clear hierarchy within the pack as a whole. There were, however, separate male and female hierarchies. The pack engaged in various communal behaviours, including greeting ceremonies in which individuals mutually submitted to one another. All dogs urine marked frequently, both sexes adopting postures to direct urine upwards and to soak their fur in odour. Only the alpha female bred successfully, and all other group members carried and guarded the young. These observations are discussed in the contexts of canid social behaviour and the breeding in captivity of this endangered species.  相似文献

This study analyzed the influence of lactation on aggression by group-living Japanese macaque females. Data collected during 268 hr of observation showed that lactating females exhibited much more aggression than did females in any other reproductive condition under investigation. This postpartum aggression showed distinctive features in terms of time course during lactation and target selectivity but it was not characterized by a higher intensity and severity. Aggression increased progressively during the first 6 weeks of lactation, reached its highest levels between 7th and 9th weeks postpartum, and thereafter diminished. The relative percentages of threat, chase, and physical attack did not change with the reproductive condition. Lactating females were selective in their choice of targets, with young females being the recipients of nearly 90% of the total of their aggression.  相似文献

Previous studies on macaque species revealed no evidence of consolation: affiliative contact between the loser of an aggressive interaction and a third party. However, typically, the researchers used short observation periods and latency to make first affiliative contact as a dependent measure. Based on social stress buffering literature, I predicted that by employing longer observation periods and percentage of time in affiliative contact as a dependent measure, I would be more likely to detect increases in affiliative contact following aggression. I observed adult female rhesus macaques for 1 hr after they received severe aggression and for 1 hr after some affiliative contact, and measured time spent in affiliative contact using instantaneous recording at 30-sec intervals. Contrary to prediction, victims of attack did not spend a greater percentage of time in affiliative contact postaggression as compared to postaffiliation. Subjects were also less likely to initiate contact with other individuals and were more likely to have contact with individuals that were dominant to their aggressor, following aggression. These results provide converging evidence that affiliative contact is not increased following aggression in macaques. I discuss the failure to bear out the predictions based on the social stress buffering literature in terms of rhesus social dynamics, the nature of aggression as a stressor, and possible mechanisms for the social stress buffering effect.  相似文献

We surveyed agonistic behaviors of 20 captive groups of pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina) housed under identical spatial conditions. Fifteen groups contained one male each; the other five groups contained no adult males. Groups included six to twelve adult females, some of which had infants with them. We found no relationship between social density of groups and incidence of agonistic behavior, but significantly more contact aggression (grab, hit, push, bite) and noncontact aggression (chase, open-mouth “threat,” bark vocalization) occurred among females in groups containing no males than in those containing one male each. Apparently, males played an important role in the inhibition of intragroup conflict. We also found that females in groups containing males exhibited less noncontact aggression if infants were present than if no infants resided in their groups. Thus, competition of females over infants must not have been an important constituent of intragroup conflict under the conditions of this survey.  相似文献

We studied the reproductive behaviour of the blue-ringed octopus, Hapalochlaena lunulata, in the laboratory by examining 15 male-male and nine male-female interactions. The initiation of physical contact was independent of sex, size or residency status, and there were no noticeable changes in behaviour such as sexual displays associated with courtship or aggression prior to contact. Males did not distinguish between females or other males and copulated (defined as the insertion of the hectocotylus into the mantle cavity of another octopus) readily with both. Spermatophores were released in all copulations with females but not with males. The duration of copulation was significantly longer in male-female interactions (median 160.5 min) than in male-male interactions (median 30 s). Although male-male copulations ended passively with the withdrawal of the hectocotylus by the initiating animal, male-female copulations were always terminated by the females following an intense struggle. These studies suggest the inability of male H. lunulata to determine the sexual identity of potential mates prior to the insertion of the hectocotylus and demonstrate the active role of the female during copulation. On Barro Colorado Island, Panama, a mature male howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) was observed chasing a young adult male howler, both members of the same troop. Detailed observations on births, deaths and solitary males before and after the chase suggest a strong correlation between an unstable social structure within the troop and overt aggression between different-aged males. Prevailing models of animal communication assume that signalling during aggressive conflict mitigates the costs of fighting. We tested this assumption by staging dyadic encounters between male field crickets, Teleogryllus oceanicus, under three conditions: (i) both males could sing aggressive songs, (ii) neither male could sing, and (iii) one male could sing but the other could not. We conducted experiments on males from a Hawaiian population from Kauai that has recently evolved signal loss, and males from a Hawaiian population from the Big Island that has not. Among both populations, interactions between two silent males were characterized by higher levels of aggression than interactions involving one or two singing males. Because the level of aggression is strongly related to the cost of fighting, these data demonstrate that signalling mitigates the cost of fighting. In mixed trials, we found no statistically significant differences between the behaviour of calling and non-calling males in either population. We conclude that there is no evidence that the Kauai population exhibits special adaptations to alleviate the costs of signal loss. Finally, we found that males were much more likely to signal after their opponent''s retreat than after their own retreat. Aggressive song therefore meets the definition of a ‘victory display’.  相似文献

The social organization of the Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis) is thought to be sexually segregated, with males and females forming separate social groups during the nonbreeding season. To investigate the influence of this social order on patterns of aggression, controlled single animal introductions within established groups and establishment of new groups were studied in a systematic manner. Behavioral observations were made using an all-occurrences technique to sample all agonistic interactions. In study I, 4 animals of each age-sex class (adult males and females, juvenile males and females) were introduced one at a time into 4 different social groups composed of 1 adult male and 8 to 10 adult females. Behavioral observations were made prior to and after the introductions. Newly introduced adult males received significantly more contact aggression than other age classes. Only the adult females increased aggression after the introduction of new animals. In study II, new social groups were formed and behavioral observations were made following formation. One group was formed from 7 pairs of familiar females and an unfamiliar adult male. This group had a high frequency of aggression during the first half hour, with contact aggression rising to peaks at 3 and 5 h. The second group consisted of 10 familiar females, 2 pairs of familiar females and an unfamiliar male. There was a significant peak in contact aggression 3 h into the observation.  相似文献

Territoriality and social organization were examined in relation to different genetic dispositions for aggressive behaviour. The animals used in the study were male mice of the 51st and 52nd generation of selection for high (Turku Aggressive, TA) and low (Turku Non-Aggressive, TNA) levels of aggressiveness. The level of aggressiveness of the animals was assessed by means of individual tests with non-aggressive standard opponents, after which they were allowed to form individual territories in a 102 times 204 times 90 cm enclosure. TA and TNA males were placed in different enclosures. After 2 wk, when the partitions between individual pens were removed, the behaviour of the animals was observed for a 7-d period. Excessive fighting between the highly aggressive TA males occurred, resulting in the formation of dominant-subordinate relationships. A great number of attacks inflicted were found to be associated with dominance in the colony, and correlated with a high level of aggressiveness when the animals were individually tested for aggression after having been in colony environments. The level of aggressiveness of the TA males that had become subordinates had significantly decreased. The TNA males fought less and were more often found to stay in their original territory for the entire period of observation. The results suggest that different genotypes for aggression arc related to differences in territoriality and social organization in mice.  相似文献

The spatial extent of animal movement is a key consideration when designing conservation measures, such as marine protected areas. Methods to assess territory size in the marine environment, however, are labour intensive and/or expensive. Here, we explore a novel method to investigate the spatial ecology of territorial fishes by examining their reactions to an artificial light stimulus. During benthic towed video surveys conducted in Lyme Bay, southwest England, several species of wrasse (Labridae) have frequently been observed pursuing a laser projected onto the seabed. While the motivation behind ‘laser‐chasing’ is unclear, we quantified the spatial aspects of this behaviour by comparing chase distance and chase likelihood between and within species, to determine the potential utility of this method for investigating space use and aggression in wild fishes. Cuckoo wrasse (Labrus mixtus) were significantly more likely to display agonistic behaviour towards the laser than Goldsinny wrasse (Ctenolabrus rupestris). Goldsinny wrasse displayed a positive relationship between total length and chase‐distance, but not Cuckoo wrasse. The observed species differences may relate to behavioural factors affecting the motivation behind ‘laser‐chasing’, which is discussed. Chases by the cuckoo wrasse were significantly longer than those by Goldsinny wrasse, and these chase distances were used to estimate theoretical territory sizes for each species. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the spatial aspects of the reactions to an artificial stimulus by wild fishes. The potential to develop the method to directly investigate aspects of territoriality and aggression in wild fishes is discussed, including necessary further refinements and testing. Wild wrasses are increasingly exploited in Europe to provide cleaner fish for salmonid aquaculture, and we encourage the development of methods to inform spatial conservation measures for these ubiquitous and iconic species.  相似文献

Aggression when pigs are mixed into new social groups has negative impacts on welfare and production. Aggressive behaviour is moderately heritable and could be reduced by genetic selection. The possible wider impacts of selection for reduced aggressiveness on handling traits and activity in the home pen were investigated using 1663 male and female pedigree pigs (898 purebred Yorkshire and 765 Yorkshire × Landrace). Aggressive behaviour was observed over 24 h after pigs were mixed at 10 weeks of age into groups balanced for unfamiliarity and weight. Aggression was highly heritable (duration of involvement in reciprocal fighting h2 = 0.47 ± 0.03, and duration of delivering one-sided aggression h2 = 0.34 ± 0.03). Three weeks after mixing, home pen inactivity (indicated by the frequency of lying) was observed over 24 h. Inactivity was weakly heritable (h2 = 0.05 ± 0.01) but showed no significant genetic association with aggression. Pigs' behaviour during handling by humans was assessed on entry to, whilst inside and on exit from a weigh crate at both mixing and end of test at 22 weeks. Pigs were generally easy to handle, moving easily into and out of the crate. Scores indicating 'very difficult to move' were rare. Handling scores at weighing were weakly heritable (h2 = 0.03 to 0.17), and moderately correlated across the two weighings (rg = 0.28 to 0.76). Aggressive behaviour at mixing was genetically associated with handling at the end of test weighing: pigs that fought and delivered one-sided aggression had handling scores indicating more active behaviour at weighing (e.g. moving quickly into the crate v. fighting rg = 0.41 ± 0.05 and v. bullying rg = 0.60 ± 0.04). Also, there was a genetic association between receiving one-side aggression at mixing and producing high-pitched vocalisations in the weigh crate (rg = 0.78 ± 0.08). Correlated behavioural responses occurring across different challenging situations (e.g. social mixing and human handling) have been described by the concept of animal temperament (also known as coping styles, personality or behavioural syndromes), but this has rarely been demonstrated at the genetic level in farm animals. These findings may have practical implications for the development of breeding programmes aimed at altering animal temperament. Breeding to reduce aggression could result in some reduction in activity at weighing. This would have consequences for animal production, because pigs which are inactive at weighing take longer to move into and out of the weigh crate, and perhaps also for animal welfare.  相似文献

Research in the past decade has established the existence of consistent individual differences or ‘personality’ in animals and their important role in many aspects of animal behaviour. At the same time, research on honest signalling of aggression has revealed that while some of the putative aggression signals are reliable, they are only imperfectly so. This study asks whether a significant portion of the variance in the aggression-signal regression may be explained by individual differences in signalling strategies. Using the well-studied aggressive signalling system of song sparrows (Melospiza melodia), we carried out repeated assays to measure both aggressive behaviours and aggressive signalling of territorial males. Through these assays, we found that aggressive behaviours and aggressive signalling were both highly repeatable, and moreover that aggressive behaviours in 2009–2010 predicted whether the birds would attack a taxidermic mount over a year later. Most significantly, we found that residual variation in signalling behaviours, after controlling for aggressive behaviour, was individually consistent, suggesting there may be a second personality trait determining the level of aggressive signalling. We term this potential personality trait ‘communicativeness’ and discuss these results in the context of honest signalling theories and recent findings reporting prevalence of ‘under-signalling’.  相似文献

The effects of development and disturbance on schooling and shoaling were observed in laboratory-raised minnows. Both behaviours were present at the onset of free swimming. Shoaling increased to become the most important behaviour by 3 weeks after emergence from gravel, while the main increase in schooling behaviour occurred at 4 weeks. These changes were accompanied by rises in elective group size and in the number of following responses, and by a decrease in nearest neighbour distance. The increases in social behaviour were observed at an earlier stage in the same minnows threatened by a standard net chase. The main increase in schooling in disturbed minnows took place between 3 and 4 weeks after emergence; after this time schooling became the dominant behaviour. Disturbed fish were also more likely to follow another minnow during an encounter.  相似文献

The relationship between mothers' and daughters' dominance ranks was studied in a captive herd of mouflon sheep ( Ovis gmelini ), including nine adult ewes and their daughters, observed as lambs and yearlings. We found a positive correlation between the ranks of mothers and those of their yearling daughters, even though every mother dominated all the yearlings. We then tested the hypothesis that daughters from subordinate ewes became subordinate within their own age class because, as lambs, they had received more aggression from the other ewes in the herd. Recorded data were inconsistent with the hypothesis, even showing a trend for female lambs to receive aggression more frequently when born from dominant ewes. We also tested the hypothesis that resemblance between mothers' and daughters' ranks was due to inheritance of aggressiveness. No significant correlation was found between mothers' and daughters' aggressiveness, so the hypothesis was not supported. Finally, we found a significant concordance between mothers' ranks, daughters' ranks, and daughters' birth dates. Earlier-born daughters became dominant over later-born ones, probably because of larger body size and more advanced social behaviour. The age of most of the mothers was undetermined, but in mouflon sheep, older ewes generally dominate younger ewes and are known to lamb earlier during the birth season. Accordingly, it is suggested that dominant ewes have daughters dominant in their own age class, because (1) age influences the parturition date during the birth season, and (2) age strongly influences rank, even in individuals born during the same lambing season.  相似文献
