The timing of ovulation relative to the onset of oestrus and the preovulatory surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) was studied in red deer following treatments to synchronize oestrus and induce either a monovulatory or superovulatory response. Mature hinds (n = 36) were allocated randomly to two mating groups (n = 16 + 20), with respective treatments staggered by 4 weeks during the 1990 rut (March-April). Each hind was treated with an intravaginal controlled internal drug releasing (CIDR)-type S device for 14 days. Treatments to induce a monovulatory response included CIDR device alone (treatment A; n = 4 + 8) and additional injection of 200 iu pregnant mares' serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) at device removal (treatment B; n = 4 + 4). Treatments to induce a superovulatory response included injections of 200 iu PMSG and 0.5 units ovine follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) at about time of removal of CIDR devices (treatment C; n = 4 + 4) and further treatment with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogue 18 h after removal of CIDR devices (treatment D; n = 4 + 4). The hinds were run with crayon-harnessed stags from insertion of CIDR devices (12 March or 9 April) and blood samples were taken every second day to determine plasma progesterone. Further blood samples were collected for determination of plasma LH and progesterone via indwelling jugular cannulae every 2 h for 72 h from removal of CIDR devices. Hinds were allocated randomly to an initial ovarian examination by laparoscopy at either 16 or 20 h (A and B), or 12 or 16 h (C and D) after the onset of oestrus, with laparoscopy repeated at intervals of 8 h until either ovulation was recorded (A and B), or for four successive occasions (C and D). All hinds received cloprostenol injections 15 days after device removal. A total of 28 hinds (78%) exhibited oestrus and a preovulatory LH surge, with mean (+/- SEM) times to onset of oestrus of 44.6 +/- 1.0 h (A; n = 7), 37.4 +/- 2.0 h (B; n = 7), 16.3 +/- 1.7 h (C; n = 6) or 14.0 +/- 1.7 h (D; n = 8). Variation in reproductive success among adult red deer stags was related to harem size, and the duration and timing of breeding access. All three factors were affected by dominance (fighting success) during the rut. The number of hinds using a stag's rutting area and the duration of individual rutting activity also affected breeding access. Dominance rank in bachelor herds, which may affect access to hinds conceiving after the rut, was correlated with rank in the preceding but not the following rut.  相似文献

The oestrous cycles of fourteen red deer hinds (six yearling; eight more than 2 years old) were synchronized during the early breeding season by removal of a progesterone-containing intravaginal device and blood samples were taken at intervals of 3 h commencing 13 or 25 h later and continued for 54 h. The controlled internal drug release devices (CIDRs) were removed at 08:00 h (group 1; three yearlings and four adults) or 12 h later at 20:00 h (group 2; three yearlings and four adults). There was no significant effect of time of removal of CIDR on the interval to the onset of oestrus (group 1, 34.5 +/- 4.05 h; group 2, 42.14 +/- 7.8 h) on the time of peak concentration (group 1, 41.81 +/- 5.69 h; group 2, 41.71 +/- 7.81 h) or on duration of the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge (group 1, 15.00 +/- 0.95 h; group 2, 14.57 +/- 0.78 h). The six yearling animals exhibited oestrus and LH surge significantly later than the adults (55 +/- 4.2 versus 32 +/- 6.3 h for the LH surge for yearling and adult females, respectively). In a further experiment, 20 hinds were synchronized during the breeding season by removal of CIDR at two times of day 12 h apart and placed with a stag. Mating took place at a mean time of 42.1 +/- 2.4 h and 37.0 +/- 1.3 h later in the two groups. Abstract

Ovaries were recovered from red deer hinds culled in South West and in 1973–1976 during late pregnancy/early lactation (13 November – 18 December), the non-breeding season (10 January – 23 February), the period just before the onset of the rut (16 March – 11 April), and early pregnancy (13 May – 1 June). The percentage of hinds with a corpus luteum just before the onset of the rut was low (16.3% of adult hinds). An accessory corpus luteum of pregnancy was found in 46.8% of hinds in early pregnancy and in 58.9% in late pregnancy/early lactation (the difference is not significant). The accessory corpus luteum was about half the size of the primary corpus luteum of pregnancy. It appeared that the accessory corpus luteum was formed early in the breeding season, and persisted until parturition.  相似文献

Six conceptuses were collected from red deer hinds on day 22 after synchronization of oestrus with intravaginal progesterone-releasing devices (removal of device = day 0). Within 24 h of culture in vitro, the supernatant from five of six conceptuses showed detectable antiviral activity. Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) receptors were identified by immunohistochemistry on the luminal surface of the endometrium, in the neurohypophysis and paraventricular hypothalamus, but not in the ovaries of the hinds from which the conceptuses were collected. Another 16 intact hinds were synchronized as above. Injection of 4 mg IFN i.m. twice a day on days 13-15 had no effect on cloprostenol-induced oxytocin secretion on day 15 and did not prevent cloprostenol-induced luteal regression. Sixteen ovariectomized hinds received a protocol of steroid treatment to mimic ovarian hormone secretion during the normal oestrous cycle. On day 16, hinds showed undulant oxytocin secretion that showed a degree of temporal association with uterine PGF2 alpha release. Treatment with 4 mg IFN-alpha I 1 twice a day on days 13-16 had no effect on this spontaneous oxytocin secretion, but reduced the magnitude of cloprostenol-induced oxytocin secretion on day 17 (P < 0.05). These results indicate that red deer conceptuses secrete an anti-luteolytic IFN to which the endometrium expresses a receptor during early pregnancy. The presence of IFN receptors in the hypothalamus and posterior pituitary and the IFN-induced suppression of extra-ovarian oxytocin secretion provides tentative evidence of an involvement of the central nervous system in maternal recognition of pregnancy in deer.  相似文献

Reproductive effort (RE) is defined as the investment in any current reproductive act. In male ungulates, variation in RE can be explained by differences in age, dominance, phase in the breeding season and number of oestrus females simultaneously present. We investigated the relation between these factors and RE in American bison males in semi-natural conditions. We looked for differences between males in RE, measured by tending behaviour, and maintenance activities (feeding/resting) during the rut. We found no effect of age on RE. During early rut there was no difference in RE between males of different rank. Dominant males had a higher RE during peak rut, and in late rut both the first and second ranking males showed more RE than lower ranking bulls. For all males, there was a clear increase in RE towards peak rut and when more females were attractive. Maintenance behaviours decreased when more females were synchronously in oestrus. The most dominant bulls spent less time grazing than lower ranking males, and all males decreased feeding during peak rut. Resting decreased with age. We conclude that dominance, phase of rut and the number of females synchronously in oestrus are the factors that best explain variation in RE.  相似文献

Lactating (N = 12) and non-lactating (N = 6) red deer hinds and one stag at pasture were given concentrates (500 g/head) containing melatonin (5 mg/head) daily at 16:00 h from 18 June to 16 October. The stag shed the antler velvet and started rutting 5 weeks ahead of untreated stags, and hinds had their first oestrus and ovulation of the breeding season in mid-September, 5 weeks in advance of control lactating (N = 9) and non-lactating (N = 5) hinds. Treated hinds were allowed to mate with the treated stag and control hinds ran in an adjacent paddock with an untreated stag. All hinds became pregnant during the study with all but 2 melatonin-fed hinds (1 lactating, 1 non-lactating) and 1 control hind (lactating) conceiving at the first oestrus. Melatonin-treated hinds lost slightly more live weight than did controls from June to November, but their suckled calves grew throughout at a rate similar to those of control hinds.  相似文献

The distribution of calving times in a population of Red deer on the Isle of Rhum, Inner Hebrides, between 1971 and 1976 is described. Two-thirds of calves were born during a three-week period beginning in the last week of May, though calving extended from early May to late August. Except in 1976, when calving occurred late, the timing of births was similar in all years. Variation in calving time within years resulted from (i) individual differences in calving time, (ii) late conception in hinds which failed to conceive at first oestrus, and (iii) the effect of previous reproductive history: on average, hinds calved one week later after rearing a calf in the previous winter. Gestation lengths of wild hinds were longer than in a captive group. This may have been due to overestimation of a proportion of gestation lengths in wild hinds, but supplementary feeding could also have shortened gestation length in captive animals.  相似文献

Red deer (Cervus elaphus) is a seasonally breeding mammal. The season of reproduction is probably regulated by photoperiod. The rut and the majority of conceptions occur in October. If hind is not allowed to mate the oestrus is repeated at an interval of about 13.5 days. In captivity the mating season is more prolonged and the calving season is extended. The length of gestation is about 235 days. The fat % of milk varies between 6.6 and 17.4. A hind in good condition may attain puberty as 16.5 month old. The smaller doses of stilboestrolum dipropionicum (S, 150-250 mg) induced mainly a female type of sexual behaviour or oestrus. The bigger and more prolonged administration of S (250-300 mg, given twice with a monthly interval) induced a strong male sexual behaviour e.g. roaring, chasing a hind in oestrus, mouting a hind in oestrus or a dummy sprinkled with pheromones and performance of an ejaculatory peak (M). During M the hind was in an almost vertical position and a single ejaculation of saliva was always observed. The artificially induced antlers of hinds without hormonal treatment became broken and their regrowth was very small. After S the velvet was always shed. After larger doses of S the casting was more delayed and the next antler growth was bigger.  相似文献

Reproductive cycles were studied in a group of tame Père David's deer hinds. The non-pregnant hind is seasonally polyoestrous and, in animals studied over 2 years, the breeding season began in early August (2 August +/- 3.3 days; s.e.m., N = 9) and ended in mid-December (18 December +/- 5.7 days; N = 8) and early January (6 January +/- 3.2 days; N = 11) in consecutive years. During the anoestrous period, plasma progesterone concentrations were low (0.2 +/- 0.01 ng/ml) or non-detectable. There was a small, transient increase in progesterone values before the onset of the first cycle of the breeding season. In daily samples taken during an oestrous cycle in which hinds were mated by a marked vasectomized stag, progesterone concentrations remained low (less than 0.5 ng/ml) for a period of about 6 days around the time of oestrus, showed a significant increase above oestrous levels by Day 4 (Day 0 = day of oestrus) and then continued to increase for 18 +/- 2.8 days to reach mean maximum luteal levels of 3.5 +/- 0.6 ng/ml. The plasma progesterone profiles from a number of animals indicated that marking of the hinds by the vasectomized stag did not occur at each ovulation during the breeding season and therefore an estimate of the cycle length could not be determined by this method. In the following year, detection of oestrus in 5 hinds was based on behavioural observations made in the absence of the stag. Concentrations of progesterone in peripheral plasma of red deer hinds were basal (less than 1 ng/ml) during lactation/seasonal anoestrus, but increased abruptly at the onset of the breeding season. Lactating hinds (N = 19) started ovarian cycles 10 days later (P less than 0.01) and conceived 16 days later (P less than 0.001) than did 13 weaned hinds. There was no evidence, from plasma progesterone values, of silent oestrus at the start of the season. Progestagen/PMSG treatment induced early ovulations in 8 anoestrous hinds but fertility was low, only 2 conceiving and giving birth. Pregnant hinds (N = 42) had high plasma concentrations of progesterone (mean 3-5 ng/ml) which declined just before parturition.  相似文献

Recent studies have demonstrated that gestation length of red deer (Cervus elaphus) is highly variable and influenced by various environmental factors, and this may confer survival advantages for neonates. The current study investigated the relationship between conception date and gestation length to test the hypothesis that within-herd synchrony of red deer births is facilitated by a 'push/pull' control over gestation length, such that hinds conceiving early and late in the breeding season have longer and shorter gestation periods, respectively. In Study 1, data on conception and calving dates were obtained for 393 naturally cycling hinds across two herds. In Study 2, conception and calving dates were obtained from 91 hinds in which oestrus/conception were artificially synchronised across a 4-week range of dates spanning the natural rut. Gestation length for each population was analysed by linear regression, fitting conception day followed by terms for the fixed effect which included hind age (pubertal vs. adult), hind genotype (Cervus elaphus scoticus vs. Cervus elaphus hippelaphus and their crossbreds), calf sex, sire genotype (Study 1 only), birth weight and year. In Study 1, both populations of naturally cycling hinds exhibited highly significant (P<0.001) negative slopes (-0.36, -0.49) for the regression of gestation length against conception date, with indications of a significant hind genotype effect favouring shorter overall gestation lengths for crossbred hinds. Other effects for hind age, calf sex, birth weight, sire genotype and year were not significant. In Study 2, in which conception dates were artificially induced, there was a highly significant negative slope (-0.19), with a notable but non-significant effect of hind age favouring shorter overall gestation length for primiparous (pubertal) hinds (P>0.05). Other effects for hind live weight, calf sex and calf birth weight were not significant. All data sets support the hypothesis, and indicate that for every 10 days difference in conception date there was a change in gestation length of 1.9-4.9 days. This hints at the adaptive importance of optimisation of birth date in wild populations of red deer but the precise physiological mechanisms remain to be resolved. It is postulated that variation in fetal age during the latter stages of pregnancy, when feed quality and voluntary feed intake cycles are in a state of flux, may drive differential growth trajectories for early and late conceived fetuses, leading to nutritional control over fetal maturation and induction of parturition. However, consideration is also given to a putative direct effect of prevailing photoperiod on control of parturition processes in red deer.  相似文献

在麋鹿的发情交配季节 ,雄性麋鹿可区分为 3种类型 :“群主”、“挑战者”和“单身汉”。“群主”是一头圈占并控制雌鹿活动的优势雄性。“挑战者”不占有雌性繁殖群 ,但在发情场附近地点展示炫耀。当雌性繁殖群的雌鹿外出采食靠近“挑战者”的展示炫耀地点时 ,“挑战者”会积极地寻求机会与之交配。“单身汉”在繁殖季节不表现发情行为。他们像非繁殖季节一样采食 ,采食后蹲在水塘中休息。我们对何种因素决定麋鹿个体的发情交配计策感兴趣。 1996至 1998年夏天 ,我们在北京麋鹿苑观察麋鹿发情交配行为以分析导致这些行为差异的原因。结果发现 ,“群主”、“挑战者”和“单身汉”用于维持生命的时间预算与用于发情的时间预算成反比 ,并且 ,“群主”、“挑战者”和“单身汉”用于维持生命的时间预算与用于发情的时间预算差异显著。“群主”的绝大部分时间用于发情占群 ,而用于采食、饮水的时间很少 ,所以 ,“群主”在发情期间基本上处于禁食状态 ,靠消耗体内脂肪维持生命。“单身汉”则相反 ,绝大部分时间用于采食、休息和反刍 ,基本上没有发情行为。“挑战者”在发情行为与维持生命行为之间的时间则居于“群主”与“单身汉”之间。交配次数是偏态分布的 ,与雄性发情时间呈正比。“群主”的交配概率最高  相似文献

Calving date in many mammals is matched to the time of greatest food availability. Out of season calving results in heavy penalties in terms of own and offspring survival or body condition. This study examined whether gestation length is affected by advancing fertilisation. Thirty-six red deer hinds (of the Iberian and Scottish subspecies) were subjected to a synchronisation treatment of oestrus, ovulation, and artificial insemination on three dates, with remaining non-pregnant females mated with an intact male in a last group. Gestation was longer the more the fertilisation was advanced; gestation lasted 241.5+/-1.3 days (d) in the first group, 237.4+/-1.2 d in the second, 235.1+/-1.3 d in the third, and 231.2+/-1.6 d in the last. Mean gestation lasted 234.2+/-0.7 d. Hinds gained less weight during gestation the more the fertilisation was advanced. The difference was due at least in part to net body weight of the hind after calving compared to that at mating, and calves did not differ in birth weight. As early born calves suffer greater mortality in the field, this enlargening of gestation might be a compensatory response of the hinds to match calving with food availability. Under natural conditions, similar small modifications of gestation length may help hinds to overcome short-term adverse conditions for calving. Because calf mortality is correlated with birth weight, hinds may have kept calf birth weight constant at the expense of greater body weight loss.  相似文献

The factors affecting the stag social hierarchy and antler cycle timing in a herd of red deer were analysed. The analysis was based on behaviour records of the herd between 1972 and 1983. The alpha stag was not usually the oldest stag present. Changes in rank were commoner in periods of hard antler than during velvet periods. The frequency of rank changes was correlated with the number of stags present but not with the number of hinds; it was also positively related to indicators of the level of aggression such as the incidence of antler breakage, the number of harem-holding stags per rut and the incidence of post-casting rank loss. The number of stags killed in fights was not correlated to any of the indicators of aggression except the number of harem-holders per rut. Rank loss after antler casting and the change of harem-holding stags during the rut were both relatively rare events indicating year-round, stable social relationships in the herd. The relationships between rank and casting date and between rank and cleaning date previously reported were related to the level of aggression among the deer. The higher the level of aggression, the closer the relationship between rank and the timing of the antler cycle. The small difference in the level of aggression between the periods of casting and cleaning is thought to be the result of the seasonally different social background. The number of hinds present did not appear to affect antler casting, antler cleaning or the general indicators of the level of aggression. It is concluded that the results support the previously advanced hypothesis that behaviour modulates antler cycle timing in Cervids.  相似文献

Acoustic cues present in the reproductive calls of many animal species potentially encode important information about the caller. Here, we test the response of a free‐ranging population of peri‐oestrus red deer hinds to variation in a specific acoustic cue to body size in the male roar, the formant frequencies. Our results revealed: (1) that hinds showed greater overall attention (judged by longer looking responses and lower response latencies) to roars simulating males of sub‐adult body size than to those simulating a large adult male and (2) that hinds without dependent offspring had greater looking responses to male roars and lower response latencies than hinds with dependent offspring to roars simulating sub‐adult males. These findings indicate that free‐ranging red deer hinds may use formants as acoustic cues to gauge the body size and maturity of males in their natural environment, possibly to facilitate earlier detection and avoidance of young stags that are known to harass them.  相似文献

The role of interferon in early pregnancy in red deer was investigated by (a) measuring production of interferon by the conceptus, (b) testing the anti-luteolytic effect of recombinant interferon-tau in non-pregnant hinds, and (c) treatment of hinds with interferon after asynchronous embryo transfer. Blastocysts were collected from 34 hinds by uterine flushing 14 (n = 2), 16 (n = 2), 18 (n = 8), 20 (n = 13) or 22 (n = 9) days after synchronization of oestrus with progesterone withdrawal. Interferon anti-viral activity was detectable in uterine flushings from day 16 to day 22, and increased with duration of gestation (P < 0.01) and developmental stage (P < 0.01). When interferon-tau was administered daily between day 14 and day 20 to non-pregnant hinds to mimic natural blastocyst production, luteolysis was delayed by a dose of 0.2 mg day(-1) (27.3 +/- 1.3 days after synchronization, n = 4 versus 21 +/- 0 days in control hinds, n = 3; P < 0.05). Interferon-tau was administered to hinds after asynchronous embryo transfer to determine whether it protects the conceptus against early pregnancy loss. Embryos (n = 24) collected on day 6 from naturally mated, superovulated donors (n = 15) were transferred into synchronized recipients on day 10 or day 11. Interferon-tau treatment (0.2 mg daily from day 14 to 20) increased calving rate from 0 to 64% in all recipients (0/11 versus 7/11, P < 0.005), and from 0 to 67% in day 10 recipients (0/8 versus 6/9, P < 0.01). The increased success rate of asynchronous embryo transfer after interferon-tau treatment in cervids may be of benefit where mismatched embryo-maternal signalling leads to failure in the establishment of pregnancy.  相似文献

The effects of chronic treatment with norgestomet on follicular dynamics, corpus luteum growth and function as well as the temporal relationships among body temperature, oestrous behaviour, the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and ovulation following implant removal were studied in 16 Holstein heifers. Oestrous cycles of the heifers were initially synchronized using 2 injections of prostaglandin F-2 alpha (PGF-2 alpha) 12 days apart. The heifers were then implanted with a norgestomet ear implant for 9 days, beginning either at the middle of the synchronized cycle (dioestrus) or at the end of the synchronized cycle (pro-oestrus). Follicular dynamics, corpus luteum growth and regression, and plasma progesterone were not affected by norgestomet treatment at dioestrus. The dominant follicle present at the time of norgestomet implantation in the pro-oestrus group was maintained during the 9-day implant period of 6 of 8 heifers and ovulated after implant removal. Time from implant removal to onset of standing oestrus and time to LH peak following implant removal were highly correlated with the time of ovulation (r = 0.92 and 0.96, respectively). Onset of standing oestrus and the LH peak and the onset of standing oestrus and peak vaginal and rectal temperatures were also highly correlated (r = 0.96, 0.82 and 0.81, respectively). It is concluded that any decrease in pregnancy rates following treatment with norgestomet is not due to asynchrony among oestrus, the LH surge and ovulation.  相似文献

Prepubertal red deer hinds were subjected to shortened daily photoperiod (8 h light per day, N = 3) or a daily (afternoon) melatonin injection (N = 4) for 83 days starting on 8 January, 2 weeks after the summer solstice. Compared with control hinds (N = 3) these treatments caused premature moulting of summer pelage, reduced serum prolactin concentrations to barely detectable levels about 34 days earlier than usual and advanced the date of mating. Calves were born earlier (P less than 0.005) in the hinds exposed to a shortened photoperiod (12 November +/- 1.7 days) and melatonin treatment (11 November +/- 3.2 days) than in control hinds (13 December +/- 7.9 days). Serum progesterone levels recorded before the first detected oestrus indicated that silent ovulations had occurred in many of the hinds (6 of 10) in this experiment. This study demonstrated the role of shortened daily photoperiod in red deer and indicated that the effects of reduced photoperiod observed were mediated by melatonin.  相似文献

Mortality of newborn red deer (Cervus elaphus) calves is a major concern on New Zealand farms, as perinatal losses average approximately 10% of calves born. Primiparous red deer (calving as yearlings) lose more calves than multiparous hinds (adults). We performed a study on yearling and adult red deer hinds in order to improve knowledge of their calving behaviour and determine any apparent reasons for calf mortality. Pacing along fence lines was observed frequently during the 24 h period before birth (individuals were pacing in 43% of observations during this period). Adult hinds had a significantly earlier onset and longer duration of pacing (P<0.05). Hinds were often observed isolated (>20 m) from the rest of the herd during the 2 days prior to parturition, and this behaviour was also observed earlier in the adults than in the yearlings (P<0.05). Forty-four percent of adult hinds and 60% of yearlings experienced some form of interference from other hinds during parturition. Among hinds that were interfered with, yearlings had a higher average number of interferences from other hinds during parturition than adults (P<0.05). Calves born to yearling hinds took significantly longer to suckle for the first time (mean=44 min) from their dams than calves born to adult hinds (33 min; P<0.05). We concluded that an inability of hinds to express natural isolation behaviour was likely to contribute to calf mortality due to increased anxiety (indicated by fence line pacing) and encroachment on the birth areas of others, and that calves of yearlings were at an increased risk of mortality due to the higher number of interferences taking place during parturition and the longer time interval between birth and suckling.  相似文献
