I examined multiple mating and its function in female earwigs, Euborellia plebeja (Dermaptera: Anisolabididae). Like other earwigs, females of this species care for their eggs and intermittently lay eggs in clutches (iteroparity). Analysis of two polymorphic allozyme loci revealed that wild-caught adult females laid clutches with low within-brood genetic relatedness (0.210), indicating that females were promiscuous under natural conditions. Rearing experiments in the laboratory revealed that: (1) repeated mating with a single male increased female fecundity (number of clutches laid) and hence the number of hatchlings produced; (2) estimated sperm number was positively correlated with hatchability; (3) when frequency of mating was controlled, polyandry enhanced hatchability, although this effect was not statistically significant; (4) duration of maternal care varied for clutches with low hatchability, and sometimes exceeded the mean interclutch interval. Thus, although a possible benefit of polyandry is suggested, the greater beneficial effect of repeated mating on female fecundity can explain polyandrous mating in this species. Because female earwigs invest considerable effort in brooding their clutches, it may be adaptive to suppress oviposition unless stored sperm ensures high fertility. Virgin females of Lobesia botrana Denis & Schiffermüller were mated at ages of 1, 3, 5, 8, 12 and 16 days and the effect of mating delay on reproductive output assessed. Delayed mating did not affect female mating success but fertilization was reduced in 16-day-old females. Increased mating delays substantially affected daily oviposition pattern and resulted in a significant reduction of both fecundity and fertility, so that mean number of viable eggs laid decreased from 150 to 22 in 1- and 16-day-old mated females, respectively. Heavier females were more constrained than lighter ones by mating delays and female reproductive efficiency (no. viable eggs/female body weight) was also significantly reduced. Female longevity significantly increased and oviposition period gradually declined with mating delay. The number of viable eggs was positively correlated with both female weight and oviposition period; female longevity and female weight were also significantly correlated. However, the significance of these correlations declined with increased mating delay. Results overall indicated that mating delay drastically reduces female L. botrana reproductive output. The implications of delayed mating of females are discussed from an ecological perspective in relation to L. botrana control using mating disruption.  相似文献

Summary

To evaluate the influence of repeated mating on female fecundity in the simultaneously hermaphroditic, self-incompatible land snail Arianta arbus-torum, the number and size of clutches, egg size and hatching success of individuals from 3 populations were determined under conditions of isolation and grouping during one breeding season in a field cage experiment. Only adult snails which had mated and oviposited in the preceding year were used.

Sperm storage enabled isolated individuals to continue with the production of fertilized eggs. Snails kept singly or in groups differed neither in number of clutches laid nor in egg size. But isolated snails laid smaller clutches than did grouped snails. As a result isolated snails produced fewer eggs per breeding season. Hatching success varied greatly between populations and rearing conditions. In general, isolated snails had fewer hatchlings than grouped snails, indicating that individuals prevented from remating suffered a reduced fitness.  相似文献

Abstract.  To comprehend the significance of multiple mating in female Callosobruchus maculatus , the material-benefits hypothesis is tested, as well as the potential function and mechanism of additional mating for females. The results show that longevity and lifetime fecundity are significantly higher in doubly-mated females, whereas females subject to an interrupted second copulation (which transfers no ejaculate) show resemblance with singly-mated females in lifetime fecundity and daily fecundity, supporting the material-benefits hypothesis. Female lifetime fecundity increases with ejaculate size in doubly-, but not singly-mated females. Doubly-mated females exhibit an immediate increase in fecundity on the day of remating. Moreover, dissection of ovaries after remating shows that the number of unlaid eggs is lower in doubly-mated females in comparison with singly-mated females, whereas the total number of unlaid and laid eggs shows no significant difference. This suggests that the second mating increases the oviposition rate, but not the egg maturation rate in female C. maculatus . Thus, ejaculate serves as a stimulus for oviposition, at least on the remating day. However, because doubly-mated females lay more eggs in total than singly-mated females, doubly-mated females appear to mature more eggs than the singly-mated counterparts. This is attributed to the 'indirect-driven' hypothesis, which states that the reduction in the number of mature eggs in the oviducts brought about by oviposition stimulates the maturation of oocytes in ovarioles to replenish the number of mature eggs.  相似文献

Several taxa of simultaneously hermaphroditic land snails exhibit a conspicuous mating behaviour, the so-called shooting of love darts. During mating, such land snail species transfer a specific secretion by stabbing a mating partner''s body with the love dart. It has been shown that sperm donors benefit from this traumatic secretion transfer, because the secretions manipulate the physiology of a sperm recipient and increase the donors'' fertilization success. However, it is unclear whether reception of dart shooting is costly to the recipients. Therefore, the effect of sexual conflict and antagonistic arms races on the evolution of traumatic secretion transfer in land snails is still controversial. To examine this effect, we compared lifetime fecundity and longevity between the individuals that received and did not receive dart shooting from mating partners in Bradybaena pellucida. Our experiments showed that the dart-receiving snails suffered reduction in lifetime fecundity and longevity. These results suggest that the costly mating behaviour, dart shooting, generates conflict between sperm donors and recipients and that sexually antagonistic arms races have contributed to the diversification of the morphological and behavioural traits relevant to dart shooting. Our findings also support theories suggesting a violent escalation of sexual conflict in hermaphroditic animals.  相似文献

Abstract Fecundity in some insects is affected by mating status. The effect of mating status on the fecundity and total egg production of Teleogryllus emma (Ohmachi et Matsumura) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) was examined in this study. The results showed that the pre‐oviposition period was shorter for amphigonic females than that for virgin females. However, no significant difference in pre‐oviposition was found between amphigonic females and those that had mated with a male with either the phallodeum or testes extirpated. There is no difference in adult longevity between the above four groups. The fecundity and total egg production were much higher in amphigonic females than in those controlled under the three non‐amphigonic treatments. The females of T. emma that mated with the testes‐extirpated males produced more eggs (up to two‐fold more) than both the virgin females and those that mated with the phallodeum‐extirpated males, but there was no difference between them. The fecundity‐enhancing substances transferred from male to female can stimulate the female to produce more eggs, but this stimulation has to occur in collaboration with sperm.  相似文献

In polygynous mating systems, males often increase their fecundity via aggressive defense of mates and/or resources necessary for successful mating. Here we show that both male and female reproductive behavior during the breeding season (June–August) affect female fecundity, a vital rate that is an important determinant of population growth rate and viability. By using 4 years of data on behavior and demography of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), we found that male behavior and spatial dynamics—aggression and territory size—are significantly related to female fecundity. Higher rates of male aggression and larger territory sizes were associated with lower estimates of female fecundity within the same year. Female aggression was significantly and positively related to fecundity both within the same year as the behavior was measured and in the following year. These results indicate that while male aggression and defense of territories may increase male fecundity, such interactions may cause a reduction in the overall population growth rate by lowering female fecundity. Females may attempt to offset male-related reductions in female fecundity by increasing their own aggression—perhaps to defend pups from incidental injury or mortality. Thus in polygynous mating systems, male aggression may increase male fitness at the cost of female fitness and overall population viability.  相似文献

Abstract:  The influence of different mating durations on fecundity and fertility has been studied in two aphidophagous ladybirds, Cheilomenes sexmaculata and Coelophora saucia . Pre-oviposition period decreased while fecundity and fertility increased with increase in mating duration in both the ladybird species. The increase in fecundity with longer mating durations is probably due to the female response because of cryptic female choice. Mating of 10-s duration resulted in oviposition but of unviable eggs probably because of lack of sperm transfer. A minimum duration of 1 min of mating was probably essential for fertilization of the eggs. Absence of spermatophore in the reproductive tract of females is indicative of direct sperm transfer in both the ladybird species. Trend of fertility (similar fertility at 1 and 5 min followed by increase at 60 min which was again similar to that at complete mating) indicates probable sperm transfer in spurts in C. sexmaculata while continuous transfer in C. saucia is indicated by continuous increase in fertility with increase in mating duration.  相似文献

The effect of male density on female reproductive fitness is still poorly understood in many insect species. Here we examined how male density influenced female mating behaviour, fecundity, longevity and damage to the genital tract in Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), an important pest of whole grains worldwide. We show that with increasing male density, (1) both male mate competition and female copulation duration significantly increased and (2) female fecundity, longevity and feeding time significantly decreased. Dissection indicates that the backward pointing spines on the reversed internal sac of male genitalia may grip and damage the female genital tracts. These results suggest that longer copulation and more frequent matings under higher male densities reduce the time for feeding and oviposition and increase the damage to female genital tracts. We conclude that the decreased female reproductive fitness under high male densities is most likely caused by a combination of the decreased feeding and oviposition time and increased damage to female genital tracts.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of single, double, and triple matings on female lifetime fecundity in two closely related species of beetle, Callosobruchus analis and C. maculatus. Multiple mating resulted in elevated lifetime fecundities in both species, although the pattern of elevation differed between the two species. When oviposition resource was plentiful the elevation was apparent after a second but not a third copulation for C. maculatus and after a second and after a third for C. analis. By altering the availability of oviposition sites to C. maculatus females, we were able to alter the pattern of fecundity elevation between matings. When oviposition sites were limited, fecundity increased after a third mating but not a second mating. We suggest that the pattern of fecundity elevation associated with multiple mating in these species is primarily the result of oviposition stimulants delivered by males, rather than a nutritional donation brought about by the metabolism of ejaculates. We also suggest that the intra- and interspecific differences in the relationship between mating frequency and fecundity are the result of differences in egg maturation rates.  相似文献

There is frequently a tradeoff between fecundity and longevity, but the relationship is inconsistent across species and influenced by various exogenous and endogenous factors. Previous studies of Lygus hesperus Knight (Hemiptera: Miridae) established that egg production is promoted by insemination, at least temporarily, but little is known about the long‐term effects of mating and nonsexual interactions with conspecifics on egg production and female lifespan. To elucidate these relationships, survivorship and oviposition rate were tracked daily in females that were isolated or paired with a fertile male or another female throughout their adult lives. Mating rates were determined by postmortem examination. Results indicate that male‐specific stimuli accelerate female reproductive maturation, and that mating elevates oviposition rate. However, females paired with either a female or male companion had shortened lifespans, suggesting that social contacts exact a significant cost in this solitary species. Despite the negative impact of conspecific interactions and the finding that a singly mated female has sufficient sperm to fertilize a lifetime supply of eggs, many females were found to have mated more than once. Multiply mated females had higher sustained oviposition rates, lived longer, and had greater lifetime fecundities. Collectively, no strong evidence was found of a direct physiological link between fecundity and longevity, but environmental factors and mating were found to significantly influence both traits.  相似文献

Abstract The importance of multiple mating to female reproductive output in Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is evaluated by grouping individual females with one or three males for 24 h (short duration) or 2 weeks (long duration) and examining oviposition over 18–19 days. For the short‐duration treatments, females lay more eggs per day when grouped with multiple males, whereas females in the long‐duration treatments lay more eggs when paired with one male. When held for 24 h with one or three males, females show a decline in fecundity beginning 10 and 15 days after mating, respectively. Total fecundity is relatively high for females paired with one male for 2 weeks, but fecundity is low and mortality high when females are held with three males for 2 weeks. In treatments in which females are held with males for 2 weeks, oviposition increases dramatically in the days after removal of males. For females paired with a male for 24 h and re‐paired for 24 h, 9 days later, fecundity remains high throughout the 18–19‐day observation period. Egg fertility does not differ among treatments, but varies over time in a manner that is similar among treatments. The present study demonstrates that, in D. citri, females require multiple matings over time to achieve high reproductive output, but oviposition is constrained by the presence of males.  相似文献

The bloodsucking bug Triatoma williami is the main vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease in State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It occurs in sylvatic areas of Brazilian savanna with often records of adult specimens in domestic and peridomestic habitats. We describe, for the first time, the reproductive parameters of T. williami females such as fecundity, fertility and lifespan. We also evaluate whether mating and nourishment status of females of T. williami may modulate the reproductive parameters. As a result, the presence of male corroborated to increase female lifespan from 5.14±1,77 to 34.57±10,86 weeks. The oviposition rate in mated female increased 275% when we compared to the fecundity values in unmated females. Finally, our results indicate that mating is crucial to improve lifespan and fecundity of T. williami females. This characteristic may be related to the environmental conditions under T. williami develops, because the sylvatic ecotopes form small scattered colonies with infrequent access to blood sources.  相似文献

【目的】本文旨在明确营养状况不同造成的梨小食心虫Grapholitha molesta(Busck)雌、雄蛹重量差异对其羽化的成虫产卵量、产卵期、寿命及下一代(F1)幼虫发育的影响。【方法】室内条件下,通过不同的饲养方法,获得个体重量不同的梨小食心虫雌、雄蛹,待其羽化交配后,记录其产卵量、产卵时间和成虫寿命;卵孵化前后,分别测量卵和初孵幼虫大小,计算卵孵化率,统计幼虫发育历期。【结果】雌蛹重量对梨小食心虫的成虫产卵量影响显著,其重量与产卵量呈正相关(y=15.505x-59.292);同一条件下,雌蛹与雄蛹重量也呈正相关(y=0.823x-0.538)。同时,雌蛹重量对成虫产卵期影响也较大,蛹重大的个体羽化的雌虫比蛹重小的个体羽化的雌虫产卵高峰期提前1 d;较重、中等和较轻蛹羽化出的雌虫个体每天产卵量高于10粒/雌的时间分别为9~10,7和5~6 d;产卵量高于5粒/雌的时间分别为12~13,9和6~7 d。而雄蛹重量对产卵量、雄成虫寿命影响没有明显影响。较轻的蛹羽化的雌成虫寿命比较重蛹羽化的雌成虫短2~3 d;而雄蛹重量对其羽化的雄成虫寿命影响没有明显规律。雌、雄蛹重量对其羽化成虫的卵孵化率、卵和初孵幼虫的大小影响均不显著,对F_1幼虫发育历期影响也不显著。【结论】梨小食心虫雌蛹重对羽化成虫的产卵量和产卵期等影响显著,田间防治时应注意在不同条件下完成发育的个体,尤其是雌虫,由于营养差异引起的个体大小对随后种群增长的影响。  相似文献

In the mass rearing of fruit flies, the adult emergence time is gradual, due to factors such as variation in food consumption in the larval phase, the female oviposition behavior and environmental conditions, among others. Here, we investigate the effect of emergence time on sex ratio, fecundity, fertility, body size and mating performance in mass-reared Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae) flies. The results of the study indicated that the emergence of the flies is gradual and lasts approximately 96?h, but the highest proportion of emerged flies was observed at 48?h. The flies emerging at 24 and 48?h showed higher fecundity than those emerging at 72 and 96?h, but there were no significant differences in the sex ratio, fertility and male mating performance. Body size was significant, the flies that emerged at 24, 48 and 72?h were bigger than those emerged at 96?h. The discussion focuses on the effect of emergence time on the rearing processes and release of the Mexican fruit fly.  相似文献

Finding, assessing, rejecting, and copulating with a mate isassumed to carry fitness costs, particularly for females, thathave to be traded off against fitness benefits of mating suchas increased fecundity, fertility, longevity, or better qualityoffspring. Female dung flies, Sepsis cynipsea (Diptera: Sepsidae),typically attempt to dislodge mounted males harassing themby vigorous shaking. Shaking duration has been shown to reflect both direct and indirect female choice in this species. Thelatter is an expression of the females' general reluctanceto mate due to presumed costs of mating. We investigated thecosts of copulation in the laboratory. Females were randomlyassigned to one of three treatment groups and allowed to copulateeither not at all, once, or twice. The males' armored genitalia injured females internally during copula. Injuries were visibleas sclerotized scars in the female ovipositor, and their occurrenceincreased with mating frequency. Presumably due to these injuries,mated females showed higher mortality. This effect was statisticallyindependent from additional costs of reproduction related tooviposition, as copulation also increased lifetime egg productionand tended to augment oviposition rate (eggs per day), while fertility (proportion of offspring emerged) was unaffected.We thus found high mortality costs of copulating, indicatingsubstantial sexual conflict, which helps explain female reluctanceto mate in this species.  相似文献

Scopula subpunctaria, is one of important defoliating insect pests of tea plants in China. However, the effect of temperature on its longevity and fecundity had not been reported, and the temperature-dependent oviposition model is lacking. The reproductive characteristics of S. subpunctaria were investigated under eight constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 33℃), with a 14L: 10D photoperid and 65–85% RH. The results showed that temperature significantly influence oviposition period, longevity, and fecundity of S. subpunctaria. The mean longevity of female adults increased from 10.8 days (33℃) to 33.9 days (13℃). Male lived shorter than female did. The mean longevity of males was shortest at 33℃ (8.1 days) and longest at 23.8℃ (17.6 days). Total fecundity of S. subpunctaria females ranged from 15.4 eggs at 33℃ to 279.9 eggs at 22℃. The temperature-dependent oviposition model of S. subpunctaria was constructed based on four sub-models (developmental rate model, total fecundity model, oviposition rate model, and survival rate model). The results of this study would be helpful in forecasting and predicting population occurrence of S. subpunctaria in tea plantations.  相似文献

为了探索雌螨延迟交配对整个种群的负面效应, 采用叶碟饲养法, 在室内条件下研究了延迟交配对山楂叶螨Tetranychus viennensis Zacher繁殖及种群增长的影响。结果表明: 雌螨延迟交配主要影响寿命、产卵量, 进而影响种群增长率; 随着雌螨交配时间的延迟, 影响的程度逐渐加剧。交配延迟达到或超过7 d, 雌螨的寿命比对照延长20.17%, 产卵量比对照下降26.74%, 但对后代的孵化率、存活率无明显影响。对生命表参数的分析结果表明, 雌螨交配延迟达到或超过7 d, 会导致净生殖率显著下降、平均世代周期历期显著延长, 而内禀增长率则在交配延迟3 d时显著降低。未经交配的雌螨只能营孤雌生殖, 寿命延长了31.14%, 产卵量减少了30.08%。营孤雌生殖的雌螨可以通过与其后代回交而实现两性生殖。结果提示延迟交配会导致山楂叶螨的繁殖力降低。  相似文献

Females of the predatory miteParasitus fimetorum (Gamasida; Parasitina) inhabiting animal manure indiscriminately copulate with many mates. The sperm competition between the males was estimated by electrophoresis of allozymes and the effects of multiple mating on female reproduction were investigated. When females were forced to mate only once, their fecundity decreased drastically compared to the case of multiple mating (but longevity was unaffected). When one female mated with two males, the outcome of sperm competition depended greatly upon the mating interval. When the second mating occurred immediately after the first, the female fecundity decreased as in the case of single mating and the second male fertilized only a few eggs. However, when there was an interval of 1 day between the two matings, the females achieved normal fecundity and the second male fertilized approximately half the eggs. This suggests that the spermatophore deposited by the first male may act as a short-term copulatory ‘plug’ in the female's genital opening. When one female mated with several males with 1 day intervals, three or more males shared fertilization of the eggs. This study suggests that the multiple mating of females is a necessary stimulus to continue oogenesis and some physiological factors for this stimulation may exist in spermatophores.  相似文献
