The diets of black oreo Allocyttus niger, smooth oreo Pseudocyttus maculatus, spiky oreo Neocyttus rhomboidalis and orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus were determined from examination of contents of 240, 311, 76 and 415 non‐empty stomachs, from fishes sampled by bottom trawl on Chatham Rise to the east of South Island, New Zealand. Hoplostethus atlanticus had an opportunistic predatory strategy with a broad diet dominated by prawns and mesopelagic teleosts, but with substantial components of mysids and cephalopods. Pseudocyttus maculatus was strongly specialized on gelatinous zooplankton (jellyfish and salps). Allocyttus niger consumed mainly salps and hyperiid amphipods, and to a lesser extent fishes, prawns, mysids and copepods. Neocyttus rhomboidalis primarily consumed salps, along with mysids, euphausiids and fishes. Only P. maculatus did not exhibit significant ontogenetic variation in diet. The diets were also influenced by year and bottom depth. Differences in the distributions and diets of the four species probably reduce conflicts in resource use.  相似文献

Associations between Amphipoda Hyperiidea specimens and gelatinous zooplankton such as cnidarians, ctenophores or salps are known in the literature. It is well established that many hyperiids are intimately associated with gelatinous zooplankton during part or all of their life-cycles, and that the associations could be of commensal or of parasitic nature, sometimes very highly species-specific. Although conventional net sampling usually does not preserve evidence of these associations, 12 instances of association (I.A.) were found in nine of the 49 samples collected during the 'FINEP XI Cruise', carried out on the Southeast coast of Brazil (23–28 °S), in January 1980. Lestrigonus bengalensisGiles, 1887 (11 specimens) and Simorhynchotus antennarius(Claus, 1871) (one specimen) were found inside salps and siphonophores. The study of the nature of these associations is essential to the understanding of the evolution of the group.  相似文献

The species composition, distribution, and abundance of the hyperiid amphipods collected in March 1993 across a Gulf of Mexico cold-core ring (CCR) were analyzed. Day and night samples were collected by oblique tows (100 m to surface) with a plankton net. Hyperiids were represented by 56 species, 21 of which have not been recorded previously in gulf waters. The local oceanic community differs from that reported from adjacent neritic and neritic-oceanic areas of the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic. Overall, hyperiids were more abundant within (59% of total catch in org./1000 m3) than outside the CCR (41%). All inside CCR stations were sampled at night. Night outside vs. night inside CCR hyperiid faunas showed important differences in terms of species richness, composition and density. Cluster analysis indicated that day sta. 5 on the edge but outside the CCR was more similar to those stations inside the CCR (nighttime samples) than to the other daytime samples. Moreover, all the stations outside the CCR were clustered together independently of their day or night origin. It is suggested that the differences found were more related to differential conditions related to the CCR than to diel vertical migration. The analysis of three congeneric pairs with inverse CCR-related abundance and with known or inferred migratory patterns strengthened the idea that these pairs are probably separated by thermal preferences; also, their vertical migratory patterns seem to be abnormal inside the CCR. A relatively higher concentration of immature stages inside the CCR supports the idea that the enriched CCR waters constitute areas of increased production. Furthermore, this higher productivity enhances the chances of hyperiids to find their hosts, the gelatinous zooplankters, which are also more abundant inside the CCR.  相似文献

Micronekton and macrozooplankton were collected during the austral spring of 1993 in the NW Weddell Sea. Sampling was done in three areas of the marginal ice zone: pack ice, ice edge, and open water, to examine the short-term effects of the spring phytoplankton bloom on the distribution and abundance of dominant fish and invertebrate species. Significant differences were observed for several common species, including Salpa thompsoni,Euphausia superba, Electrona antarctica, Gymnoscopelus braueri,and G. opisthopterus. Increased abundance seaward of the pack ice for these species is attributed to elevated phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass at the ice edge and in the open water areas. Distribution of the hyperiid amphipods, Cyllopus lucasii and Vibilia stebbingi mirrored that of S. thompsoni. No distributional trends between the areas were observed for Thysanoessa macrura, the amphipods Cyphocaris richardi and Primno macropa, the decapod shrimp Pasiphaea scotiae, the scyphomedusae Atolla wyvilli and Periphylla periphylla, and chaetognaths, indicating a trophic independence from the ice-edge bloom for these species. Lower occurrence of the mesopelagic fish Bathylagus antarcticus and Cyclothone microdon under the ice suggested that trophic repercussions of the spring bloom can also extend to deeper living species.  相似文献

This study quantifies the occurrence of gelatinous zooplankton in the stomach contents of fishes from the southwest Atlantic Ocean (33°–55°S). More than 69,000 fish stomachs belonging to 107 species were examined. A total of 39 fishes were documented as consumers of gelatinous zooplankton, 23 of which were newly discovered. Three gelatinous organism consumption categories are recognized: (1) very frequent consumers (10 species, six of which were exclusive); frequent consumers (five species); and occasional consumers (26 species). Three types of gelatinous prey (ctenophores, salps and medusae) were found in the stomach contents of fishes. Ctenophores were consumed at high levels across almost the entire continental shelves of Argentina and Uruguay. Salps were frequent prey on the slope and southern shelf. In contrast, medusae were consumed in coastal areas, slopes and the southern shelf. Classification methods (group average sorting of the Bray–Curtis similarity measures based on log (X?+?1)-transformed percentage data) determined six areas where fishes predated on gelatinous organisms. SIMPER (similarity percentages) analysis determined which fishes contributed more to the consumption of gelatinous organisms. Results revealed that two fish species (Stromateus brasiliensis and Squalus acanthias) had high gelatinous zooplankton predation rates throughout the entire study area, while another six species (Patagonotothen ramsayi, Helicolenus dactylopterus lahillei, Macrourus holotrachys, Merluccius hubbsi, Schroederichthys bivius, and Macruronus magellanicus), while widely distributed, seemed to have specific areas where consumption occurred. This study not only provides new knowledge about the importance of gelatinous zooplankton in the diet of numerous fishes, but might also be valuable for planning and managing local fisheries.  相似文献

Antarctic salps (Salpa thompsoni and Ihlea racovitzai) and their commensal hyperiid amphipods (Vibilia antarctica, Cyllopus lucasii and C. magellanicus) were collected near Elephant Island, in the South Shetland Islands, during 1997 and the salp-rich year 1998. The sterol composition of aggregate S. thompsoni and I. racovitzai (mostly 24-methyl-5,22E-dien-3β-ol, 24-nordehydrocholesterol, cholesterol and trans-dehydrocholesterol) was reflected in the sterol composition of the commensal amphipods and was consistent with a herbivorous planktonic diet. This was not the case for solitary S. thompsoni, with 24-methylenecholesterol as the major sterol. There was a greater abundance of aggregate salp stanols in 1997 (11.7% total sterols) than 1998 (5.2%) and these different stanol levels were reflected in the commensal amphipods. Eicosapentaenoic acid [20:5(n-3)] and docosahexaenoic acid [22:6(n-3)] were the major polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in all organisms. Octadecapentaenoic acid [18:5(n-3)] comprised 0.4–5.8% (of total fatty acids) in all 1998 salps and amphipods, but was absent in 1997 samples. This suggests a greater presence of dinoflagellates or other species rich in 18:5(n-3) in the “salp year” 1998. Very long chain PUFA (C24, C26, C28) were also only detected in 1998 samples (up to 5.3%), reflecting commensalism and greater presence of dinoflagellates or species containing very long chain PUFA. Examination of the biomarker lipids has provided an indication of trophic interactions for these Antarctic salps and their commensal hyperiid amphipods. Accepted: 8 November 1999  相似文献

Summary The snailfish family Liparididae was well represented in bottom trawl hauls (205–370 m) from the Spitsbergen area, with Liparis gibbus being the dominant species. Careproctus reinhardti was less numerous. The present paper is based on 539 specimens of C. gibbus (size range 6–25cm) and 120 specimens of L. reinhardti (size range 5–26 cm). Both species showed a rather similar size and age distribution. The stomach contents reveal that both snailfish species feed both benthically and pelagically. Crustaceans, especially amphipods and decapods, were the most common prey items. With increasing size of the fish, the decapod Pandalus borealis becomes more important, particularly for L. gibbus. Juvenile Liparis (1.3–4.3 cm in length) were found pelagically (35–200 m), and their diet mainly consisted of copepods and young hyperiid amphipods.  相似文献

Trace metals (Cd, Cu, Zp, Pb, Ni) were determined in different zooplankton taxa to assess their role in the biogeochemical cycle in the North Sea. Results of semi-static bioaccumulation experiments on board ship using collectives of Calanus finmarchicus/C. helgolandicus were in agreement with a net accumulation strategy, thus meeting an inevitable precondition for their utilization as biomonitors. Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations in field samples of zooplankton displayed a pronounced variability between taxa, with Cd ranging from 0.13 mg kg-1 (d.w.) in fish larvae to 5I mg kg-1 in hyperiid amphipods. Almost no information is available about metal requirements of copepods. However, most of our and worldwide reported Cu concentrations in calanoid copepods (6-22 mg kg−1) coincided with estimates of enzymatic requirements of decapod crustaceans. Cd levels in Calanus collectives increased significantly from 0.68 mg kg-1 in the German Bight to 11 mg kg−1 at some stations around Scotland above 59° N, in line with literature data reported for benthic decapod crustaceans.  相似文献

An increase of xenodiversity in plankton and benthos in the eastern Gulf of Finland was observed from 1998 to 2004. Nonindigenous species account for 4.8% of all species found and up to 96% of total biomass. Invasive benthic omnivores, the alien amphipods Gmelinoides fasciatus and Pontogammarus robustoides and the predaceous fish Perccottus glenii with their versatile diets strongly affect the community structure. Invasive sessile seston-feeders that directly (through grazing and water clearance) and indirectly (through recycling of nutrients) interact with other ecosystem components, are mainly represented by the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha, which affect the structure of benthic and planktonic communities as well as benthic-pelagic coupling. The invasive predatory cladocerans Cercopagis pengoi and Evadne anonyx and larvae of D. polymorpha are only temporary components in the zooplankton, which is limiting their overall effect. Alien benthic bioturbators, the polychaetes Marenzelleria neglecta and the oligochaete Tubificoides pseudogaster account for a high proportion of total abundance and biomass but their effects on native species need further research.  相似文献

The diets and prey selection of six species of tuna baitfish (the engraulids Stolephorus devisi and S. heterolobus, three dussumierids of genus Spratelloides, and the apogonid Archamiazosterophora. were examined at two heavily fished and one unfished site in the Solomon Islands. All species ate almost exclusively nektonic zooplankton, especially crustaceans. Calanoid copepods were the most importantpreyofallspeciesexcept A. zosterophora, whichateagreater biomassoflarvalfish. Baitfishcould be divided into two groups according to prey taxa: the apogonid A. zosterophora and the engraulids S. devisi and S. heterolobus ate similar prey in similar proportions; the three dussumierid species (Spratelloides) ate smaller zooplankton and a greater proportion of calanoids than the other species. The size of prey eaten differed greatly between baitfish species. A. zosterophora ate larger prey than other species. The two Stolephorus species ate similar-size prey, which were larger than the prey of the three species of Spratelloides. Among the Spratelloides, S. delicatulus ate smaller prey than the other two species. All species differed in the size of calanoids, carids and brachyurans they ate. In all cases, prey differed more by the minimum dimension (width) than by volume. There were significant relationships between fish length and prey width and volume, except for Archamia. However, in terms ofvolume, the prey of Stolephorus increased with fish size at a much greater rate than in Spratelloides species. Baitfish diets were compared to the zooplankton available. Prey selection by the three Spratelloides species and two Sfolephorus species was density-dependent for all common prey types, although Stolephorus positively selected hyperiid amphipods and brachyurans. Archamia showed strong negative selection for calanoids and selected larger zooplankters, including fish larvae and carids, avoiding smaller, more common, prey. Overall baitfish density and zooplankton density did not correlate at either of the heavily fished sites. Nor were there consistent differences for any species in diet or changes in prey selection between the heavily fished and unfished sites. This suggests that, in these lagoons, commercial baitfish catches are not directly influenced by the composition or density of prey.  相似文献

The gelatinous zooplankton of the Canada Basin were observed with a deep-diving remotely operated vehicle (ROV) during August–September, 2002. Taxa observed fell into four main groups: cnidarians, ctenophores, chaetognaths, and pelagic tunicates. We provide detailed data on the vertical distributions of many taxa from three sites which span the Canada Basin. The most common gelatinous organisms in the surface waters were the ctenophores Mertensia ovum and Bolinopsis infundibulum. These two species were found in very large numbers in the near-surface mixed layer. In the mesopelagic zone, below the transition from the Pacific water layer and the Atlantic water layer, the most common species was Sminthea arctica. Surprising numbers of the scyphomedusa Atolla tenella were found in the deep waters of the basin, along with an undescribed species of narcomedusae. The vertical distributions of the gelatinous zooplankton observed with the ROV show several trends related to the physical properties of the water and geographic location within the basin.  相似文献

Plankton and surface sediment samples from the Gulf of California were examined to determine the present geographic distribution of silicoflagellate species in this area. Variations in the species composition of the silicoflagellate assemblage were found to be related to water mass distributions. Eight species were identified in these samples. Octactis pulchra is associated with high levels of primary productivity in the surface waters and is found in greatest abundance in the central Gulf of California. Dictyocha messanensis dominates the silicoflagellate assemblage in stations outside the Gulf of California and increases in relative abundance with decreasing amounts of Octactis pulchra. Dictyocha calida, Dictyocha sp. A, and Dictyocha sp. B are associated with equatorial waters and have the highest relative abundance near the mouth of the Gulf. Dictyocha epiodon and Distephanus speculum are associated with cold California Current Water, and Dictyocha epiodon is present in minor abundance in Gulf samples. Dictyocha sp. 2 has a patchy distribution with low relative abundance.  相似文献

A growing body of knowledge on the diversity and evolution of intertidal isopods across different regions worldwide has enhanced our understanding on biological diversification at the poorly studied, yet vast, sea–land interface. High genetic divergences among numerous allopatric lineages have been identified within presumed single broadly distributed species. Excirolana mayana is an intertidal isopod that is commonly found in sandy beaches throughout the Gulf of California. Its distribution in the Pacific extends from this basin to Colombia and in the Atlantic from Florida to Venezuela. Despite its broad distribution and ecological importance, its evolutionary history has been largely neglected. Herein, we examined phylogeographic patterns of E. mayana in the Gulf of California and the Caribbean, based on maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences from four mitochondrial genes (16S rDNA, 12S rDNA, cytochrome oxidase I gene, and cytochrome b gene). We compared the phylogeographic patterns of E. mayana with those of the coastal isopods Ligia and Excirolana braziliensis (Gulf of California and Caribbean) and Tylos (Gulf of California). We found highly divergent lineages in both, the Gulf of California and Caribbean, suggesting the presence of multiple species. We identified two instances of Atlantic–Pacific divergences. Some geographical structuring among the major clades found in the Caribbean is observed. Haplotypes from the Gulf of California form a monophyletic group sister to a lineage found in Venezuela. Phylogeographic patterns of E. mayana in the Gulf of California differ from those observed in Ligia and Tylos in this region. Nonetheless, several clades of E. mayana have similar distributions to clades of these two other isopod taxa. The high levels of cryptic diversity detected in E. mayana also pose challenges for the conservation of this isopod and its fragile environment, the sandy shores.  相似文献

Two widely distributed northern hyperiid amphipods were studied in the Barents, Greenland and Norwegian Seas. The length frequency was analysed in populations from six different regions. The life span of the Atlantic water species Themisto abyssorum was found to be 1 year in the southern part of the investigatec area, and 2 years in the northernmost localities. Its body length reached a maximum of 18 mm. The Arctic species Themisto libellula has a life span of 2–3 years and had a maximum body length of 31 mm in the examined material.  相似文献

Marine invasions are taking place at an increasing rate. When occurring in blooms, zooplanktivorous comb jellies of the genus Mnemiopsis are able to cause pelagic regime shifts in coastal areas and may cause the collapse of commercially important fish populations. Using microsatellites, developed for the first time in the phylum Ctenophora, we show that Mnemiopsis leidyi has colonized Eurasia from two source regions. Our preliminary data set included four sites within the putative source region (US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico) and 10 invaded locations in Eurasian waters. Bayesian clustering and phylogeographic approaches revealed the origin of earlier invasions of the Black and Caspian Sea in the 1980s/1990s within or close to the Gulf of Mexico, while the 2006 invasion of the North and Baltic Seas can be directly traced to New England (pairwise FST = 0). We found no evidence for mixing among both gene pools in the invaded areas. While the genetic diversity (allelic richness) remained similar in the Baltic Sea compared to the source region New England, it was reduced in the North Sea, supporting the view of an initial invasion of Northern Europe to a Baltic Sea port. In Black and Caspian Sea samples, we found a gradual decline in allelic richness compared to the Gulf of Mexico region, supporting a stepping‐stone model of colonization with two sequential genetic founder events. Our data also suggest that current practices of ballast water treatment are insufficient to prevent repeated invasions of gelatinous zooplankton.  相似文献

From samples of deep-water zooplankton obtained in the Gulfof California, an undescribed species of the genus HyperocheBovallius was collected. The new species is similar to Hyperochemedusarum Kröyer and Hyperoche luetkenides Walker. It differsfrom its congeners mainly by the strong, large chela of pereopod2 and the absence of processes or denticles along the posteriordistal margin of same structure. It was collected at a depthof 1136 m as a symbiont of the bathypelagic hydromedusa Chromatonemaerythrogonon (Bigelow). The amphipod remained grasped to themedusa subumbrellar cavity. Seven other associations are knownbetween hyperiids and jellies in the Gulf of California, mostfrom the epipelagic layer. This is the only deep-living speciesof Hyperoche known.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal variability of metazooplankton communities in relation to environmental and trophic factors were studied in the Gulf of Gabes during three periods of increasing thermal stratification in June, July and September. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed the time and space succession of three zooplankton communities in relation to the degree of thermal stratification. A co-inertia analysis showed the association between these communities and the trophic conditions (abundance and composition of microplankton) driven by stratification. Three divergent communities were evident. The first, characterized by annelid larvae and coastal copepods, was associated with shallow mixed and microplankton-rich water (June, coastal). The second, characterized by euphausiids, amphipods, doliolids and several deep-water copepods, corresponded to highly stratified microplankton-poor water (September). The third, characterized by the most ubiquitous and abundant species, was linked to intermediate water (June deep and July). Temperature and salinity conditions also explained the distribution of key species. Clausocalanus furcatus, Oithona plumifera and Triconia conifera were clearly associated with warm and highly stratified water (September). Enhanced thermal stratification led to higher surface salinity, explaining the emergence of euryhaline taxa such as Oithona plumifera.  相似文献

The genus Mustelus is the most species‐rich of the widespread family Triakidae whereby its taxonomy and systematics have been historically challenging. They represent a significant fraction of the shark catches of small‐scale fisheries in the Gulf of California. In order to provide information useful for their management and conservation, the morphological and genetic distinction of the four species found in the northern Gulf of California (M. albipinnis, M. californicus, M. henlei and M. lunulatus) were analyzed. Discriminant analysis of 10 morphometric variables placed each species in a distinct and significantly different region of multivariate morpho‐space. The variables contributing most to their distinction were inter‐nostril width, mouth length, upper and lower labial furrow length, and mouth width. Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR‐RFLP) of the nuclear ITS2 ribosomal DNA (rDNA) confirmed that each species represents a genetically cohesive and independent evolutionary lineage. In spite of the difficulty in differentiating these Mustelus species, a few cephalic measurements are useful to separate them. A PCR‐RFLP assay (using RsaI and MspI on ITS2 rDNA amplicons) is also proposed for the molecular differentiation of these commercially harvested smooth‐hound sharks, constituting the first molecular marker available for their identification. These data provide morphological and genetic tools that can be used to improve their management and conservation.  相似文献

The diet of three Patagonotothen species was investigated from the bycatch of near-bottom trawls for squid on the southern Falkland Island shelf. Patagonotothen ramsayi had a moderately diverse diet that was mostly zooplankton, especially amphipods, but included benthos and discards from the fishery, especially squid. P. guntheri also had a moderately diverse zooplankton diet, especially copepods, and benthos and squid damaged by the fishery. The diet of P. tessellata was the most diverse and was mainly benthos, including damaged scallops, with some euphausiids and amphipods. Feeding niche overlap of fish between 10 and 20 cm TL for the three species was between 5.8 and 9.2% for each pair of species, indicating relatively little overlap even though all species scavenged on organisms made available by the fishery. Thus the diet of these three Patagonotothen species indicates substantial feeding niche separation, and that the three species are moderately specialised feeders.  相似文献

The macrozooplankton and Benthic Boundary Layer (BBL) macrofauna over a coarse sand and pebble community in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc (western English Channel) were sampled with a WP2 zooplankton net and with a modified MACER-GIROQ suprabenthic sledge, respectively, from February 1994 to November 1995. One hundred and sixty-four species were collected in 44 suprabenthic sledge hauls and 19 taxa in 30 zooplankton net hauls. In the water column, appendicularians and cnidarians dominated, while, in the BBL, holoplanktonic amphipods, chaetognaths, amphipods and mysids dominated the fauna; among them Apherusa spp., Sagitta setosa Muller, Anchialina agilis (Sars), Sirella clausii Sars and Eusirus longipes Boeck were the dominant species. The density and biomass of the BBL macrozooplankton were lower than those of the macrozooplankton in the water column. The density and biomass of suprabenthos remained a low throughout the year. In the water column, density and biomass of macrozooplankton showed a maximum in spring and remained low from autumn to winter; conversely, in the BBL, the density and biomass of both macrozooplankton and suprabenthos were higher from summer to autumn. The change in abundance of both BBL and pelagic taxa was seasonal. Some species were primarily sampled in the water column (appendicularians, cladocerans and cnidarians), while others were preferentially found at the BBL (suprabenthic species, holoplanktonic amphipods and cephalopods). A third group was collected throughout the water column (chaetognaths and fish larvae).   相似文献
