Experiments reported in this paper investigate the properties of a change in the responsiveness of adult Drosophila melanogaster induced by exposure to different rearing media. This effect has previously been described as habituation or associative learning. Exposure to food medium containing 0.08% menthol induced a positive response to menthol odour in a T-maze olfactometer. A brief (one hour) exposure to mentholic food just before testing was sufficient to induce a change in responsiveness. The effect did not persist through periods of more than an hour of separation from mentholic medium.Effects induced by exposure to a single compound were not specific to that compound alone. Menthol-reared flies (MRFs) differed from plain reared flies (PRFs) in their responsiveness to the odours of benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate, as well as menthol, and exposure to ethyl acetate induced a change in response to menthol odour.That there was an induced positive response to menthol in MRFs suggests that conventional habituation is insufficient to explain the induced change in responsiveness, but the generalised nature of this behavioural induction in MRFs is hard to explain in terms of associative learning. The mechanism underlying the induction remains elusive.  相似文献

为了明确棉铃虫对苯乙醛和乙酸苯甲酯两种关键花香气味的联系性学习行为,在室内分别测定了不同学习训练的棉铃虫雌雄成虫对两种关键花香气味的选择偏好性反应和雄成虫的触角电位反应。偏好性测定结果表明,无花香气味接触经历的棉铃虫对苯乙醛和乙酸苯甲酯的选择频次均无显著差异,且单纯的花香气味接触经历也不能诱导棉铃虫气味偏好性的显著改变,唯有花香气味接触经历伴随蔗糖溶液进行强化训练时,才能诱导气味偏好性的显著性改变。从对两种花香气味的联系性学习看,棉铃虫更容易将苯乙醛与蔗糖溶液进行联系性学习,而不容易将乙酸苯甲酯与蔗糖溶液进行联系性学习。从性别差异看,雌虫比雄虫具有更强的将花香气味与蔗糖溶液进行联系性学习的能力。触角电位测定结果表明,不同学习训练的棉铃虫雄成虫对两种花香气味和绿叶气味顺-3-己烯-1-醇的EAG反应值之间不存在显著性差异。总之,花香气味伴随食物资源的联系性学习经历,能够明显提高棉铃虫成虫对花香气味的选择偏好,可以此为基础进一步优化花香引诱剂的配方设计和应用技术。  相似文献

We investigate the organization of behaviour across sensory modalities, using larval Drosophila melanogaster. We ask whether olfactory learning and behaviour are affected by visual processing. We find that: (1) Visual choice does not affect concomitant odour choice. (2) Visual context does not influence odour learning, nor do changes of visual context between training and test affect retrieval of odour memory. (3) Larvae cannot solve a biconditional discrimination task, despite generally permissive conditions. In this task, larvae are required to establish conditional associations: in light, one odour is rewarded and the other one is not, whereas in dark the opposite contingency is established. After such training, choice between the two odours is equal under light and dark testing conditions, suggesting that larvae do not establish odour memories specifically for one visual context only. Together, these data suggest that, in larval Drosophila, olfactory learning and behaviour are ‘insulated’ against visual processing.  相似文献

The role of pollen odour in resource location by the pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), a pollen-feeding insect regarded as a pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus L., (Brassicaceae) crops, was investigated in a linear track olfactometer. Both male and female beetles were attracted to the odour of whole oilseed rape flowers, indicating that these insects can locate their host plants using floral odours as cues. The attractive odour of flowers was found to emanate from all floral parts tested: the petals/sepals, the anthers, and from pollen itself. Therefore, at least part of the attractive odour of oilseed rape flowers emanates from pollen. Beetles were more attracted to floral samples containing anthers than those without anthers when these odours were directly compared in a choice-test, and this indicates that there were detectable differences between them. Anthers and pollen may therefore release distinctive odours that are quantitatively and/or qualitatively different from the odour of the rest of the flower. These experiments support the hypothesis that pollen-seeking insects use pollen odour cues to locate this food source.  相似文献

Olfactory learning may allow insects to forage optimally by more efficiently finding and using favourable food sources. Although olfactory learning has been shown in bees, insect herbivores and parasitoids, there are fewer examples from polyphagous predators. In this study, olfactory learning by a predatory coccinellid beetle is reported for the first time. In laboratory trials, adults of the aphidophagous ladybird Coccinella septempunctata did not prefer the odour of one aphid-infested barley cultivar over another. However, after feeding on aphids for 24 h on a cultivar, they preferred the odour of that particular cultivar. The mechanism appeared to be associative learning rather than sensitisation. Although inexperienced ladybirds preferred the odour of an aphid-infested barley cultivar over uninfested plants of the same cultivar, after feeding experience on a different cultivar this preference disappeared. This may indicate the acquisition and replacement of olfactory templates. The odour blends of the different aphid-infested barley cultivars varied qualitatively and quantitatively, providing a potential basis for olfactory discrimination by the ladybird. The results show that predatory coccinellids can learn to associate the odour of aphid-infested plants with the presence of prey, and that this olfactory learning ability is sensitive enough to discriminate variability between different genotypes of the same plant.  相似文献

Yeasts and filamentous fungi carried by the gynes of leaf-cutting ants   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Insect-associated microbes exhibit a wide range of interactions with their hosts. One example of such interactions is the insect-driven dispersal of microorganisms, which plays an essential role in the ecology of several microbes. To study dispersal of microorganisms by leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae: Attini), we applied culture-dependent methods to identify the filamentous fungi and yeasts found in two different body parts of leaf-cutting ant gynes: the exoskeleton and the infrabuccal pocket. The gynes use the latter structure to store a pellet of the ants’ symbiotic fungus during nest founding. Many filamentous fungi (n = 142) and yeasts (n = 19) were isolated from the gynes’ exoskeleton. In contrast, only seven filamentous fungi and three yeasts isolates were recovered from the infrabuccal pellets, suggesting an efficient mechanism utilized by the gynes to prevent contamination of the symbiotic fungus inoculum. The genus Cladosporium prevailed (78%) among filamentous fungi whereas Aureobasidium, Candida and Cryptococcus prevailed among yeasts associated with gynes. Interestingly, Escovopsis, a specialized fungal pathogen of the leaf-cutting ant-fungus symbiosis, was not isolated from the body parts or from infrabuccal pellets of any gynes sampled. Our results suggest that gynes of the leaf-cutter ants Atta laevigata and A. capiguara do not vertically transmit any particular species of yeasts or filamentous fungi during the foundation of a new nest. Instead, fungi found in association with gynes have a cosmopolitan distribution, suggesting they are probably acquired from the environment and passively dispersed during nest foundation. The possible role of these fungi for the attine ant–microbial symbiosis is discussed.  相似文献

The antagonistic activity of Trichoderma and Gliocladium isolates against Attamyces sp., a symbiotic fungus of the leaf-cutting ant Atta cephalotes, was investigated. A. cephalotes cultures this fungus as the primary food source. Most of the Trichodema and Gliocladium isolates tested in vitro (82.6%) inhibited the Attamyces sp. mycelial growth, which was probably due to their colonization ability and competition for nutrients, both of them known mechanisms of some species of these genera. T. lignorum strain T-26 was the strongest inhibitor achieving a colonization of 23%. Microscopical observations indicate that the inhibitory effect was caused by an interaction that took place in close contact with the host hypha, causing wall deformation that led to the collapse of the turgor pressure. The effects of carbon dioxide and the induction of morbidity on aversion learning in larvae of the Pacific Coast wireworm Limonius canus LeConte (Coleoptera: Elateridae) are discussed. Wireworms preconditioned by exposing them one or four times to odour of Tefluthrin 20SC and Dividend XLRTA [Syngenta Crop Protection (Canada), Inc., Canada] during the induction of temporary morbidity subsequently contact tefluthrin‐treated wheat seeds in soil bioassays for as long as naïve (i.e. not preconditioned) larvae but are repelled four to five‐fold more frequently by Dividend‐treated seeds in soil bioassays than naïve wireworms, suggesting that wireworms are capable of associating a novel odour (i.e. Dividend) with morbidity but require a minimum of 10–15 min subsequent contact time with treated seeds before being repelled. Wireworms preconditioned by exposure to peppermint odour during the induction of morbidity are not subsequently repelled by peppermint odour in soil bioassays, suggesting that wireworms are either not capable of aversion learning or that the presence of a CO2 source and/or a suitable host plant may override a negative cue (i.e. peppermint odour). In studies conducted in the absence of soil, a host plant and CO2 production, wireworms are repelled slightly by droplets of 1.0% but not 0.1% peppermint oil. Previous exposure to peppermint odour or contact with peppermint oil‐treated filter paper during one induction of morbidity does not increase the repellency of wireworms to 1.0% peppermint oil significantly. Repellency to 1.0% peppermint oil is almost eliminated when morbidity is induced five times in the absence of peppermint odour but is restored when peppermint odour is present during preconditioning. These findings suggest that wireworm sensitivity to repellent compounds decreases when repeatedly made moribund, although the results are not sufficient to conclude that wireworms are capable of associative learning.  相似文献

Olfactory learning and memory processes in Drosophila have been well investigated with aversive conditioning, but appetitive conditioning has rarely been documented. Here, we report for the first time individual olfactory conditioning of proboscis activity in restrained Drosophila melanogaster. The protocol was adapted from those developed for proboscis extension conditioning in the honeybee Apis mellifera. After establishing a scale of small proboscis movements necessary to characterize responses to olfactory stimulation, we applied Pavlovian conditioning, with five trials consisting of paired presentation of a banana odour and a sucrose reward. Drosophila showed conditioned proboscis activity to the odour, with a twofold increase of percentage of responses after the first trial. No change occurred in flies experiencing unpaired presentations of the stimuli, confirming an associative basis for this form of olfactory learning. The adenylyl cyclase mutant rutabaga did not exhibit learning in this paradigm. This protocol generated at least a short-term memory of 15 min, but no significant associative memory was detected at 1 h. We also showed that learning performance was dependent on food motivation, by comparing flies subjected to different starvation regimes.  相似文献

Oriented responses of both R. prolixus and T. infestans adults were recorded on a servosphere to mouse-odour, one of its components (CO2), and to rabbit urine-odour. The volatiles were delivered in an air-stream under controlled conditions which excluded other sensory modalities. In stimulus-free air the triatomines walked preferentially downwind in straight bouts interrupted by stops or periods at relatively low speeds, all of variable duration. In odour-laden air, bugs maintained their typical walking habit but switched from negative to positive anemotaxis. The characteristic response to odour onset was to stop, sample the air with the antennae, turn upwind in situ, and then walk off in the direction of the source for at least a few seconds, i.e., odour mediated anemotaxis. Mouse-odour caused T. infestans to increase its speed to 5.3 cms-1. Both species continued with the upwind response for some time after odour delivery ceased, but the crosswind component of the tracks was more prominent during this period — an effort, we presume, by the bugs to re-contact an odour plume. This investigation provides unequivocal evidence for host finding in triatomines by olfactory cues alone.  相似文献

The behavioural responses of adult male and female Rhyzopertha dominica (Coleoptera, Bostrichidae) to blends of host volatiles and male-produced aggregation pheromone were observed in a four-arm airflow olfactometer. The odour sources used were five pheromone-releasing males each on a single maize grain (lower maize-volatiles blend), five pheromone-releasing males on 500 g of maize (higher maize-volatiles blend) or the host volatiles emanating from 500g of maize (maize volatiles alone). Multiple-choice tests, in which volatiles from all three odour sources were presented in the exposure chamber at the same time, were used to study odour preferences of the males and females. Both sexes showed strongest attraction to the higher maize volatile blend but there were significant sex differences in response to the odour sources. Males spent significantly more time than females in the zone with only maize volatiles, and females spent significantly more time in the higher maize-volatiles zone. However, when odour sources were offered singly, females gave numerically greater responses than males to all sources although this difference was statistically significant for only the lower maize-volatiles blend. As males are more attracted than females to host odours alone it is suggested that they may be more highly adapted to seek out new hosts while females are more inclined to locate a food source by following the pheromone signals produced by males. However, both sexes responded most strongly to the odour source comprising aggregation pheromone with the higher proportion of maize volatiles.  相似文献

Using field assays of leaf preference, we tested the hypothesis that wilting affects the selection of leaves by the leaf-cutting ant Atta laevigata (Fr. Smith). Detached leaves were left to air-dry until noticeably wilted. The area removed by the ants from wilted leaves was significantly greater than the area removed from fresh leaves, this effect being observed in several plant species, in leaves of different age, and in assays with different ant colonies. Leaves collected from water-stressed plants were also preferred to leaves from non-stressed plants. A. laevigata was found to employ a two-stage, size-related, strategy when cutting plants. Larger workers climbed the plant stem and dropped whole leaves to the ground by severing their petioles; smaller workers cut the lamina of the dropped leaves. The ants frequently left dropped leaves on the ground, until the next foraging day or even later, when they were harvested in a wilted condition in preference to newly-dropped leaves.It is possible that during wilting some repellent substances evaporate or become less effective, thus enhancing leaf palatability. Alternatively or in addition, changes in nutrient and water content may have rendered wilted leaves more palatable to leaf-cutting ants.  相似文献

While searching for food, predators may use volatiles associated with their prey, but also with their competitors for prey. This was tested for the case of Zetzellia mali (Ewing) (Acari: Stigmaeidae), an important predator of the hawthorn spider mite, Amphitetranychus viennensis (Zacher) (Acari: Tetranychidae), in black-cherry orchards in Baraghan, Iran. Using a Y-tube olfactometer, the response of this predatory mite was tested to odour from black-cherry leaves with a conspecific female predatory mite, either with or without a female of the hawthorn spider mite when the alternative odour came from black-cherry leaves with the hawthorn spider mite only. Female predators avoided odours from leaves with both a hawthorn spider mite and a conspecific predator, as well as leaves with a conspecific predator only. We discuss whether avoidance emerges in response to cues from the competitor/predator, the herbivore/prey or the herbivore-damaged plant.  相似文献

As dominant herbivores and notorious pests in their native Neotropics, introduced leaf-cutting ants have the potential for ecological and economic harm. Although a large-scale invasion of leaf-cutting ants has not occurred, an isolated introduction in the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe provides useful insight into the progress of such an invasion. Since being first detected in 1954, Acromyrmex octospinosus has colonized virtually all available land area, defying an aggressive control campaign and damaging agriculture. I attempted to reconstruct the origins and spread of the invasion, as well as screen for the presence of garden pathogens, which could be used for biological control. Mitochondrial sequencing of the A. octospinosus complex throughout the Caribbean showed that the probable source of the invasion lies on Trinidad and Tobago or northeast South America. Using historical records and field surveys, the invasion’s rate of spread was estimated at 0.51 km/year. Microsatellite genotyping further confirmed the limited dispersal abilities of A. octospinosus, showing the presence of isolation by distance (even in a relatively small geographic area) and suggested ubiquitous local inbreeding. Although the invasion likely resulted from the introduction of a single colony, microsatellites showed a high level of genetic variation in the introduced population, likely as a consequence of multiple mating by the queen. A survey showed that the specialized fungus garden pathogen Escovopsis exists on the islands, suggesting that the successful spread of the ants was not due to escape from this parasite. Given that chemical control has failed in the past and that biological control using specialized garden pathogens seems improbable, only vigorous quarantine and inspection programs may prevent wide-scale leaf-cutting ant invasions in the future.  相似文献

Approximately 35% of neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex taste and olfactory areas with olfactory responses provide a representation of odour that depends on the taste with which the odour has been associated previously. This representation is produced by a slowly acting learning mechanism that learns associations between odour and taste. Other neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex respond to both the odour and to the mouth feel of fat. The representation of odour thus moves for at least some neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex beyond the domain of physico-chemical properties of the odours to a domain where the ingestion-related significance of the odour determines the representation provided. Olfactory neurons in the primate orbitofrontal cortex decrease their responses to a food eaten to satiety, but remain responsive to other foods, thus contributing to a mechanism for olfactory sensory-specific satiety. It has been shown in neuroimaging studies that the human orbitofrontal cortex provides a representation of the pleasantness of odour, in that the activation produced by the odour of a food eaten to satiety decreases relative to another food-related odour not eaten in the meal. In the same general area there is a representation of the pleasantness of the smell, taste and texture of a whole food, in that activation in this area decreases to a food eaten to satiety, but not to a food that has not been eaten in the meal.  相似文献

Natural food odours elicit different behavioural responses in snails. The tentacle carries an olfactory organ, and it either protracts toward a stimulating carrot odour or retraces in a startle-like fashion away from a cucumber odour. The tentacle retraction to cucumber was still present after the snails were fed cucumber during inter-trial periods. Also, snails without any food experience displayed a longer latency to the first bite of cucumber than of carrot and rejected cucumber more often. After tasting these foods, the latency to carrot was not affected while the latency to and number of rejections of cucumber decreased. These results suggest that initial repulsive features of food odour can be only partially compensated by olfactory learning and feeding experience. In the present study, we demonstrated that an invertebrate can be repulsed or attracted by the same natural odour at the same time and that these behavioural responses are likely aimed at achieving different physiologically relevant goals.  相似文献

We report a preliminary assessment of problem solving as an estimate of behavioural innovation and learning ability of a generalist and abundant raptor, Milvago chimango, under controlled conditions in aviaries. Experimental tests consisted in presentation of a Plexiglas box with four lids leading to isolated pieces of meat. We recorded time to first contact with the box and time from this first contact to gaining access to the pieces of meat. We recorded the number of attempts to open the box and reach the first portion of meat, and the total number of lids opened by each individual during five successive daily sessions. We found that individuals of M. chimango quickly approached and made contact with the Plexiglas box, and responded successfully to the novel feeding problem of reaching the food inside. In our study, performance of individuals was enhanced after solution of the novel task for the first time, as indicated by the progressively reduced time taken to access the food. Further, some individuals gained access to an increasing number of sections of the Plexiglas box during subsequent sessions, suggesting significant learning ability. Our results indicated M. chimango has a remarkable ability to obtain food in a novel situation, an observation that agrees with anecdotal reports of opening of receptacles to obtain food in urban environments. The results support the idea of behavioural plasticity in this species.  相似文献

In parasitoid insects, successful offspring development depends on the female’s ability to find a suitable host. Specific recognition is often based on responses to olfactory cues, but their source and nature have rarely been determined. –This paper deals with the recognition of odours involved in host location by Leptopilina boulardi[Barbotin, Carton & Kelner-Pillault] (Hymenoptera: Eucoilidae), a larval parasitoid of Drosophila species that develops in mature fruits. The nature and origin of volatile stimuli recognized among odours of the host–fruit complex, and the effect of learning on this recognition, were investigated. Oriented responses to these odours were observed in a four-armed olfactometer and were analysed with the observer software (Noldus Information Technology). Fruit odours alone (banana and pear) were not spontaneously attractive to naive parasitoids, whereas naturally-infested bananas were highly attractive. The attraction was related to the odour that adult Drosophila left on the substrate but not to Drosophila oviposition activity or larval development. A synergism between some fruit odours (banana and pear) and the odour left by adult Drosophila on damp filter paper was observed. However, when testing a non-fruit substrate (mushroom), no synergism was observed. Thus, female L. boulardi may innately recognize host–food substrate odours associated with odours from the adult stage of their host. In addition, an oviposition experience on an infested banana allows L. boulardi females to memorise the fruit odour itself through associative learning. The adaptive significance of this process is discussed.  相似文献

The role of olfactory stimuli in host detection and evaluation was studied in two encyrtid Hymenoptera. The first, Epidinocarsis lopezi De Santis, is a monophagous parasitoid of the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero, itself feeding exclusively on cassava, Manihot esculenta Crantz. The second, Leptomastix dactylopii Howard, is a monophagous parasitoid of the Citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri Risso, but this latter is highly polyphagous. The behaviour of females of both parasitoids (attaction and locomotion) was compared in a tubular olfactometer for the odours of their respective hosts on cassava and poinsettia. Tests were made using: 1) healthy host-plant alone; 2) host-plant infested with unparasitized mealybugs; 3) unparasitized mealybugs only; 4) host-plant infested with parasitized mealybugs and 5) parasitized mealybugs only. Only E. lopezi was attracted by the odour of the host-plant alone, but both species were attracted by the odour of an infested host-plant and that of unparasitized mealybugs. The odour of parasitized mealybugs, alone or on host-plant, induced an undirected activity. The attraction of E. lopezi to the odour of the host-plant alone could be linked to the monophagous diet of its host, whereas the attraction of the two species of parasitoids to the odours of infested host-plants and unparasitized mealybugs could be due to the fact that both parasitoids are specialists. The behavioural response of both species to the odour of parasitized mealybugs revealed a new aspect in host discrimination: the identification of parasitized hosts could be partly mediated through olfactory stimuli, and not only through gustatory stimuli.  相似文献

Although herbivores often have a negative impact on plant fitness, sometimes plants may benefit from their consumers. However, these positive interactions usually occur as a result of plant damage (e.g., overcompensation, defense induction). I present evidence of a novel way by which plants may benefit from their consumers without being eaten. Plants of Carduus nutans increased their physical defenses when grown in external refuse dumps of the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex lobicornis. Seedlings planted in refuse exhibited longer spines and tougher leaves than those planted in control soils. Pick-up assays with entire leaves and leaf discs demonstrated that these enhanced physical defenses prevented leaf-cutting ant harvest. Additionally, plants established in refuse dumps showed fewer insect herbivory than those in non-nest soils. The nutrient-rich refuse dump appeared to reduce the stage at which leaves are tender and thus more vulnerable to herbivory. This is the first case where plants may benefit from insect herbivores via waste products without the cost of being eaten. This illustrates how plants may plastically respond to reliable cues of the risk of herbivory.  相似文献
