On the Jiangsu coast, eastern China, Spartina alterniflora, which was introduced artificially into the region, is becoming a dominant plant species in the inter-tidal salt marshes. In order to evaluate the environmental and ecological impact of the colonization of S. alterniflora, we carried out investigations into the benthic macrofauna of the Spartina marshes of the Wanggang area, central Jiangsu coast, in 2006 and 2007. Based on analysis of the data sets obtained, 12 species of macrobenthos have been identified for the Wanggang salt marsh, including S. alterniflora, Cerithidea cingulata, Littorna scabra, Bithynia fuchsiana, Macrophthalmus japonicus, Uca arcuata, Nereis sp., Boleophthalmus petinirostris, Cyclina sinensis, Bullacta exarata, Angustassiminea castanea and Glaucomya chinensis. The results indicate that some of the native species have adapted to the new ecological environment associated with the cordgrass S. alterniflora. The biomass of macrobenthos varies significantly over different parts of the salt marsh. Further, there is a seasonal change in bio-density, with the density in summer (July and August) > autumn (November) > early summer (May). At the landward edge and over the central part of the S. alterniflora marsh, the bio-diversity is higher than the other areas of the marsh.

The positive and negative effects of exotic Spartina alterniflora in China
Spartina alterniflora is a perennial salt marsh grass native to the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North America. Recognized for its effects of diminishing strong tide even storms and accelerating sediment deposition, S. alterniflora was introduced into China in 1979. Now the artificial vegetation of Spartina has expanded to around 50 000 h m2 along the east coast of China due to its strong capability of propagating by seeds and rhizome fragments. Although it was listed among 16 harmful exotic species in China 3 years ago, we need to evaluate its positive and negative effects in the coastal region of China objectively. This paper reviews some major positive effects of S. alterniflora in China, e.g. being a dominant primary producer, buffering against tides, accelerating accretion and reclamation, absorbing nutrients and digesting pollutants, as well as some major negative effects, e.g. occupying the niche of local species, altering the mudflat habitat, changing and even diminishing biodiversity, and damaging the aquiculture in the tidal land. In addition, its biomaterial uses and biological substitution as a means of ecological regulation is also discussed.

We sought to determine the effectiveness of experimental disturbances for assessing resilience and stability in a Spartina alterniflora salt marsh. To do this, we applied disturbances of different intensities along a gradient of sediment deposition that doubled as a gradient of known stress, being associated in previous studies with numerous measures of plant vigor and soil condition. Using this gradient as a standard, we postulated a priori that areas receiving sediment were less stressed than areas which received no sediment, and therefore would be more stable and recover more rapidly after experimental disturbances. For the vegetation, we found that our estimates of resilience and stability were strongly and positively affected by sediment deposition, and therefore agreed with our a priori estimates. After lethal disturbance (herbicide application), vegetation in plots not receiving sediment failed to recover, and the affected marsh turned into a mudflat and remained so during the period of observation (>2 years). In contrast, plots receiving high and moderate amounts of sediment recovered rapidly after lethal disturbance (8–11% recovery month−1 to 50% of control levels [dependent variable was a composite variable describing vegetation]). After non-lethal disturbance (trimming at the soil surface) all study plots recovered, with rate of vegetative recovery being directly associated with degree of sediment deposition. For edaphic parameters, there no was effect of disturbance, and thus these parameters appeared to be resistant to vegetation removal. These parameters appeared to be more powerfully affected by other factors, such as water level fluctuations and sediment addition. We conclude that experimental disturbances accurately assessed stress along a known stress-gradient. They also provided additional information about the underlying stress in the system. In particular, it was intriguing that in stressed areas S. alterniflora grew in elevated “hummocks” which appeared unable to send rhizomes into denuded areas or to recover after root death. Because recovery after experimental disturbances depends on a variety of plant-soil processes, we suggest that this recovery can be used as a bio-indicator of ecosystem condition that provides insight into important underlying determinants of structure and function.

Recent salt marsh and barrier island restoration efforts in the northern Gulf of Mexico have focused on optimizing self-sustaining attributes of restored marshes to provide maximum habitat value and storm protection to vulnerable coastal communities. Salt marshes in this region are dominated by Spartina alterniflora and Avicennia germinans, two species that are valued for their ability to stabilize soils in intertidal salt marshes. We conducted a controlled greenhouse study to investigate the influences of substrate type, nutrient level, and marsh elevation on the growth and biomass allocation of S. alterniflora and A. germinans, and the consequent effects on soil development and stability. S. alterniflora exhibited optimal growth and survival at the lowest elevation (? 15 cm below the water surface) and was sensitive to high soil salinities at higher elevations (+ 15 cm above the water surface). A. germinans performed best at intermediate elevations but was negatively affected by prolonged inundation at lower elevations. We found that although there was not a strong effect of substrate type on plant growth, the development of stressful conditions due to the use of suboptimal materials would likely be exacerbated by placing the soil at extreme elevations. Soil shear strength was significantly higher in experimental units containing either S. alterniflora or A. germinans compared to unvegetated soils, suggesting that plants effectively contribute to soil strength in newly placed soils of restored marshes. As marsh vegetation plays a critical role in stabilizing shorelines, salt marsh restoration efforts in the northern Gulf of Mexico and other storm impacted coasts should be designed at optimal elevations to facilitate the establishment and growth of key marsh species.

The response of deposit-feeding animals to plant invasions is still unclear, because their food sources are often difficult to identify. We examined the effect of the exotic plant species, Spartina alterniflora, on the food source composition of two dominant snail species, Assiminea latericea and Cerithidea largillierti, in the Yangtze River estuary salt marsh using a combination of stable isotope and fatty acid analyses. We collected the snails and their potential food materials (sediment organic matter, particulate organic matter, and plant material) in S. alterniflora and native plant Phragmites australis marshes and then determined the composition of food sources of snails based on fatty acid markers and stable isotope composition. Our results indicated that A. latericea and C. largillierti are deposit feeders grazing on sedimentary particles originating from diatoms, bacteria, and vascular plants. Invasive S. alterniflora did not result in a change in the relative contribution of microalgae, bacteria, and vascular plants to the food source of the snails. Spartina alterniflora was confirmed to be assimilated by both snail species. The higher assimilation of S. alterniflora by A. latericea compared with C. largillierti is probably related to the greater ability of A. latericea to assimilate plant materials from detritus, as evidenced by fatty acid composition. Overall, S. alterniflora can be incorporated into the food web of the estuarine salt marsh by the dominant snail species with generalist-feeding habits.

Oil spills may considerably damage sensitive coastal wetlands. In this study, the tolerance limits of a dominant coastal salt marsh plant, Juncus roemerianus, to diesel oil and its phytoremediation effectiveness in wetland environments were investigated in the greenhouse. J. roemerianus was transplanted into salt marsh sediment contaminated with diesel fuel at concentrations of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320, and 640 mg diesel g?1 dry sediment. Plant stem density, shoot height, aboveground biomass and belowground biomass were detrimentally impacted at high oil dosages even 1 year after transplantation. Tolerance limits were estimated between 160 and 320 mg g?1 based on various plant variables. Importantly, J. roemerianus enhanced oil degradation; at the 40 mg/g diesel dosage, concentrations of residual total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in the sediment planted with J. roemerianus were significantly lower than those of unplanted sediments 1 year after treatment initiation. Furthermore, concentrations of total targeted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes in the J. roemerianus planted treatment were, respectively, about 3% and 15% of the unplanted treatment. Concentration reduction in all categories of hydrocarbons suggested that J. roemerianus effectively phytoremediated the diesel-contaminated wetlands.

Tidal salt marshes in the San Francisco Estuary region display heterogeneous vegetation patterns that influence wetland function and provide adequate habitat for native or endangered wildlife. In addition to analyzing the extent of vegetation, monitoring the dynamics of vegetation pattern within restoring wetlands can offer valuable information about the restoration process. Pattern metrics, derived from classified remotely sensed imagery, have been used to measure composition and configuration of patches and landscapes, but they can be unpredictable across scales, and inconsistent across time. We sought to identify pattern metrics that are consistent across spatial scale and time – and thus robust measures of vegetation and habitat configuration – for a restored tidal marsh in the San Francisco Bay, CA, USA. We used high-resolution (20 cm) remotely sensed color infrared imagery to map vegetation pattern over 2 years, and performed a multi-scale analysis of derived vegetation pattern metrics. We looked at the influence on metrics of changes in grain size through resampling and changes in minimum mapping unit (MMU) through smoothing. We examined composition, complexity, connectivity and heterogeneity metrics, focusing on perennial pickleweed (Sarcocornia pacifica), a dominant marsh plant. At our site, pickleweed patches grew larger, more irregularly shaped, and closely spaced over time, while the overall landscape became more diverse. Of the two scale factors examined, grain size was more consistent than MMU in terms of identifying relative change in composition and configuration of wetland marsh vegetation over time. Most metrics exhibited unstable behavior with larger MMUs. With small MMUs, most metrics were consistent across grain sizes, from fine (e.g. 0.16 m2) to relatively large (e.g. 16 m2) pixel sizes. Scale relationships were more variable at the landcover class level than at the landscape level (across all classes). This information may be useful to applied restoration practitioners, and adds to our general understanding of vegetation change in a restoring marsh.

This study investigated the population expansion pattern of an exotic species of Spartina alterniflora for a period of 7 years, after it had been newly introduced to the neonatal shoals of Jiuduansha (GPS), in the Yangtze Estuary, Shanghai. Remote sensing, in conjunction with geographical information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) was used to map saltmarsh vegetation on the Jiuduansha shoals and the classifications were then checked using in situ field surveys of selected areas. The results showed that the S. alterniflora population had expanded from 55 hm2 when first introduced in 1997, to 1014 hm2 in 2004. The population expansion pattern of S. alterniflora on the Jiuduansha shoals was compatible with the common feature of invasions, i.e. the initial colonization, a lag time and the onset of rapid population growth and range expansion. In the first year of plantation (1997), about 35 hm2 of S. alterniflora was successfully colonized on the Jiuduansha shoals. The period between 1998 and 2000 was characterized by a lag time, and the area of S. alterniflora increased only to 101.6 hm2. The year 2000 marked an onset of rapid population growth and range expansion and the annual expanding rate reached 25–116%, which exceeded any of the indigenous species and indicated the strong competitive capability, rapid range expansion and wide ecological niche of S. alterniflora. The advent of remote sensing, in conjunction with geographical information systems and global positioning systems, provides a potential tool for mapping vegetation, and for monitoring population dynamics and range expansion of invasive species on a large scale. The implications for population and community dynamics, biodiversity conservation and wetland management in terms of the analysis of the sequence of events associated with the initial colonization, a lag time, rate of geographic spread and features of geographic spread of the exotic S. alterniflora and the native P. australis on the Jiuduansha shoals are discussed.

Tidal marshes have recently been shown to be important biogenic Si recycling surfaces at the land–sea interface. The role of vegetation in this recycling process has not yet been quantified. In situ and ex situ decomposition experiments were conducted with Phragmites australis stems. In a freshwater tidal marsh, litterbags were incubated at different elevations and during both winter and summer. Biogenic Si (BSi) dissolution followed a double exponential decay model in the litterbags (from ca. 60 to 15 mg g−1 after 133 days), irrespective of season. Si was removed much faster from the incubated plant material compared to N and C, resulting in steadily decreasing Si/N and Si/C ratios. Ex situ, decomposition experiments were conducted in estuarine water, treated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and compared to results from untreated incubations. The bacterial influence on the dissolution of dissolved Si (DSi) from P. australis stems was negligible. Although the rate constant for dissolved Si dissolution decreased from 0.004 to 0.003 h−1, the eventual amount of BSi dissolved and saturation concentration in the incubation environment were similar in both treatments. P. australis contributes to and enhances dissolved Si recycling capacity of tidal marshes: in a reed-dominated small freshwater tidal marsh, more than 40% of DSi export was attributable to reed decomposition. As the relation between tidal marsh surface and secondary production in estuaries has been linked to marsh Si cycling capacity, this provides new insight in the ecological value of the common reed.

Living shorelines are a type of estuarine shoreline erosion control that incorporates native vegetation and preserves native habitats. Because they provide the ecosystem services associated with natural coastal wetlands while also increasing shoreline resilience, living shorelines are part of the natural and hybrid infrastructure approach to coastal resiliency. Marshes created as living shorelines are typically narrow (< 30 m) fringing marshes with sandy substrates that are well flushed by tides. These characteristics distinguish living shorelines from the larger meadow marshes in which most of the current knowledge about created marshes was developed. The value of living shorelines for providing both erosion control and habitat for estuarine organisms has been documented but their capacity for carbon sequestration has not. We measured carbon sequestration rates in living shorelines and sandy transplanted Spartina alterniflora marshes in the Newport River Estuary, North Carolina. The marshes sampled here range in age from 12 to 38 years and represent a continuum of soil development. Carbon sequestration rates ranged from 58 to 283 g C m-2 yr-1 and decreased with marsh age. The pattern of lower sequestration rates in older marshes is hypothesized to be the result of a relative enrichment of labile organic matter in younger sites and illustrates the importance of choosing mature marshes for determination of long-term carbon sequestration potential. The data presented here are within the range of published carbon sequestration rates for S. alterniflora marshes and suggest that wide-scale use of the living shoreline approach to shoreline management may come with a substantial carbon benefit.

Ecological indicators have gained increasing attention within the scientific community over the past 40 years. Several taxonomic groups have been used successfully as indicators including most prominently fish, invertebrates, plants, and birds because of their ability to indicate environmental changes. In the Laurentian Great Lakes region, there has been recent concern over the applicability of using indicators on a basin-wide scale due to species range restrictions and lake-based differences. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of the Index of Marsh Bird Community Integrity (IMBCI) to indicate land use disturbance surrounding coastal marshes of Georgian Bay and Lake Ontario. To meet this objective, we surveyed birds and vegetation at 14 marshes in Georgian Bay (low land use disturbance) and Lake Ontario (high land use disturbance). Even though Lake Ontario marshes were surrounded by significantly more altered land than Georgian Bay marshes, and had poorer water quality, we found significantly fewer birds in Georgian Bay marshes (mean = 8.2) compared to Lake Ontario (mean = 13.7) and no significant difference in IMBCI scores. This inconsistency could be due to vegetation differences affecting the strength of the index, because Georgian Bay wetlands had significantly more bulrush (Schoenoplectus spp.) and floating vegetation, while Lake Ontario wetland vegetation was taller and cattail-dominated (Typha spp.). These findings suggest that the IMBCI may not be useful on a basin-wide scale in the Great Lakes region in detecting human disturbance surrounding wetlands.

Tidal wetlands are threatened by global changes related not only to sea level rise but also to altered weather patterns. To predict consequences of these changes on coastal communities, it is necessary to understand how temporally varying abiotic conditions drive wetland production. In 2000–2011, we conducted annual surveys of Spartina alterniflora biomass in tidal marshes at nine sites in and around the Altamaha river estuary on the coast of Georgia, USA. End of the year live biomass was assessed in the creekbank and midmarsh zones to estimate annual net primary production (ANPP). River discharge was the most important driver of S. alterniflora ANPP, especially in creekbank vegetation. Increased river discharge reduces water column salinity, and this was most likely the proximate driver of increased production. In the midmarsh zone, the patterns were less distinct, although river discharge was again the best predictor, but maximum temperature had similar predictive ability. In contrast to results from terrestrial grasslands, we found no consistent evidence for a sharply delimited critical period for any climate driver in the tidal marsh, which indicates that plant growth was responsive to abiotic drivers at any time during the growing season. Results were broadly consistent across multiple sites within a geographic region. Our results differ from previous analyses of production in S. alterniflora marshes, which either identified oceanic drivers of S. alterniflora production or were unable to identify any drivers, likely because the low-latitude sites we studied were hotter and more affected by river discharge than those in previous studies.

Phenotypically and genetically variable salt marsh plants are needed for wetland creation and restoration efforts. Selected tissue culture regenerants of five salt marsh monocots, Spartina patens, Spartina alterniflora, Juncus gerardi, Juncus roemerianus, and Scirpus robustus, were planted in a simulated marsh field plot that was flood-irrigated with 10 ppt salt water to compare their phenotypic variation for potential use in wetland projects. Plant growth was evaluated after one growing season. Phenotypic variation among regenerants was found in S. alterniflora, S. patens and J. gerardi, indicating the occurrence of somaclonal variation. In S. alterniflora, significant differences occurred among regenerants in stem density. In J. gerardi, significant differences occurred in height and clone circumference. In S. patens, two of the nine regenerants exhibited higher biomass and stem density than some of the other regenerants. By using the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique, genome DNA variation in S. patens regenerants was detected. Genetic variation not only occurred among phenotypically different regenerants, but also among those phenotypically similar for the characteristics measured. Tissue culture–regenerated plants often have desirable genetic characteristics and adaptability as a result of somaclonal variation and may enable a species to perform its ecological functions in created or restored wetlands where ideal environments cannot be achieved. Thus, some previously unrestorable sites may be restorable or marginal marshes made more productive.

Coastal salt marshes are sensitive to global climate change and may play an important role in mitigating global warming. To evaluate the impacts of Spartina alterniflora invasion on global warming potential (GWP) in Chinese coastal areas, we measured CH4 and N2O fluxes and soil organic carbon sequestration rates along a transect of coastal wetlands in Jiangsu province, China, including open water; bare tidal flat; and invasive S. alterniflora, native Suaeda salsa, and Phragmites australis marshes. Annual CH4 emissions were estimated as 2.81, 4.16, 4.88, 10.79, and 16.98 kg CH4 ha?1 for open water, bare tidal flat, and P. australis, S. salsa, and S. alterniflora marshes, respectively, indicating that S. alterniflora invasion increased CH4 emissions by 57–505%. In contrast, negative N2O fluxes were found to be significantly and negatively correlated (< 0.001) with net ecosystem CO2 exchange during the growing season in S. alterniflora and P. australis marshes. Annual N2O emissions were 0.24, 0.38, and 0.56 kg N2O ha?1 in open water, bare tidal flat and S. salsa marsh, respectively, compared with ‐0.51 kg N2O ha?1 for S. alterniflora marsh and ?0.25 kg N2O ha?1 for P. australis marsh. The carbon sequestration rate of S. alterniflora marsh amounted to 3.16 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 in the top 100 cm soil profile, a value that was 2.63‐ to 8.78‐fold higher than in native plant marshes. The estimated GWP was 1.78, ?0.60, ?4.09, and ?1.14 Mg CO2eq ha?1 yr?1 in open water, bare tidal flat, P. australis marsh and S. salsa marsh, respectively, but dropped to ?11.30 Mg CO2eq ha?1 yr?1 in S. alterniflora marsh. Our results indicate that although S. alterniflora invasion stimulates CH4 emissions, it can efficiently mitigate increases in atmospheric CO2 and N2O along the coast of China.

Although much research has focused upon the negative impacts of invasive Spartina alterniflora upon salt marshes dominated by other Spartina spp., little is known about its impacts upon native Scirpus mariqueter marshes. In 1997, S. alterniflora was introduced to the Jiuduansha Shoals, Yangtze Estuary, China, to accelerate the formation of marsh habitat via accretionary processes, with the larger goal of drawing waterfowl away from wetlands near the Pudong International Airport, Shanghai, China. In 2000, a nature reserve was established on the Jiuduansha Shoals, making the impact upon the native S. mariqueter community a high priority for research. Our objective was to quantify the impacts of introduced S. alterniflora and Phragmites australis to the native S. mariqueter-dominated community at this site in four elevation zones, as compared with a nearby natural shoal. We found that species diversity was greater in the lower elevations with the engineering, through elimination of the natural dominance of S. mariqueter. We also found that diversity was lessened in the higher elevations, due to rapid growth and exclusion by the planted S. alterniflora in conjunction with the native P. australis. Moreover, we found that the growth of the native S. mariqueter was stimulated when S. alterniflora was planted nearby. It is quite likely that the net effect of these ecological processes will be to accelerate further accretion, leading to an eventual replacement of the S. mariqueter-dominated community in the long-term. Future management approaches should focus upon harvesting, grazing, and perimeter-ditching the S. alterniflora to avoid this situation.

The purpose of this paper was to examine the vegetative, sedimentary, nekton and hydrologic response to ecological re-engineering of a freshwater impoundment in the Upper Bay of Fundy. The dyke was breached in five locations and one channel initiated to connect the river to the borrow pit behind the dyke. This triggered significant self-organization within the restoration site. Existing channels (e.g. borrow pit) were incorporated within the newly excavated and developing creek system, increasing the hydraulic connectivity within the marsh and increasing fish habitat. Vegetation colonization, primarily by Spartina alterniflora, was rapid with almost 100% coverage by the end of the third year. Species associated with high marsh communities such as Juncus gerardii, Scirpus robustus, Ranunculus cymbalaria and Puccinellia maritima were present in increasing abundance post-restoration at the restoration site. The constructed channel eroded downward 2.3 m and the head of the channel retreated 35 m in response to the increased tidal prism. In the year immediately following the breach (2006), the surface of the marsh was unconsolidated and rates of change in surface elevation measured at RSET stations ranged from ?0.7 (±0.1) to 1.7 (±0.2) cm yr?1 (±1SE). Measurements between years are highly variable. By year 3 the rate of surface elevation change decreased to a more moderate but variable mean of 0.3 (±0.6) cm yr?1 with the marker horizons recording mean accretion rates of 0.7 cm yr?1. This implies subsurface consolidation as the sediments dewatered or organic matter decomposed and vegetation became more established. Fish density decreased after restoration, however, remained higher than at the reference site for most years.
