A new method of slow cortical potential (SCP) biofeedback is described, in which subjects were presented with a sequence of two alternating tones. Subjects learned to adjust their SCPs with the 4-s rhythm of presented tones by producing directed SCP changes only in certain inter-tone intervals. Specifically, they learned to simultaneously produce two EEG signals: 1) positive or negative SCP shift at vertex, and 2) SCP asymmetry between the right and the left central area. After one training session, 13 healthy participants were able to differentiate significantly between the negativity and the positivity conditions; this differentiation was achieved within less than 300 ms after the discriminative signal, i.e. much faster than in previous studies employing traditional SCP biofeedback technique. However, these participants did not produce a significant hemispheric asymmetry in the first session. In the second experiment, five subjects participated in prolonged training (6 to 17 sessions). Highly significant control of SCP asymmetry over the precentral cortex was attained in four out of five participants. Advantages and disadvantages of the new method as compared with the classical SCP biofeedback technique are discussed.  相似文献

A patient aged 10 years and 8 months with a ring-20-syndrome was studied. Clinically he presented normal psychomotor development until 25 months of age when he began with right simple partial motor seizures. He presented minimal dysmorphism, generalized tonic-clonic seizures refractory to medical therapy and behavioral troubles. He was submitted to a callosotomy when he presented an electric status, subsequently, he was treated with anticonvulsivants and felbamate and the seizures were controlled. The karyotype showed a chromosomal complement 46,XY,r(20)(p13q13.3) with loss of the telomeric regions evidenced by FISH. The mother had normal karyotype. The clinical and cytogenetic features of previous cases described in the literature were compared leading to a better characterization of this syndrome.  相似文献

Behavioral and cognitive improvements in children with ADHD have been consistently reported after neurofeedback-treatment. However, neurofeedback has not been commonly accepted as a treatment for ADHD. This study addresses previous methodological shortcomings while comparing a neurofeedback-training of Theta-Beta frequencies and training of slow cortical potentials (SCPs). The study aimed at answering (a) whether patients were able to demonstrate learning of cortical self-regulation, (b) if treatment leads to an improvement in cognition and behavior and (c) if the two experimental groups differ in cognitive and behavioral outcome variables. SCP participants were trained to produce positive and negative SCP-shifts while the Theta/Beta participants were trained to suppress Theta (4–8 Hz) while increasing Beta (12–20 Hz). Participants were blind to group assignment. Assessment included potentially confounding variables. Each group was comprised of 19 children with ADHD (aged 8–13 years). The treatment procedure consisted of three phases of 10 sessions each. Both groups were able to intentionally regulate cortical activity and improved in attention and IQ. Parents and teachers reported significant behavioral and cognitive improvements. Clinical effects for both groups remained stable six months after treatment. Groups did not differ in behavioural or cognitive outcome.  相似文献

The goal of the study was to explore parallel changes in EEG spectral frequencies during biofeedback of slow cortical potentials (SCPs) in epilepsy patients. Thirty-four patients with intractable focal epilepsy participated in 35 sessions of SCP self-regulation training. The spectral analysis was carried out for the EEG recorded at the same electrode site (Cz) that was used for SCP feedback. The most prominent effect was the increase in the 2 power (6.0–7.9 Hz) and the relative power decrement in all other frequency bands (particularly 1, 2, and 2) in transfer trials (i.e., where patients controlled their SCPs without continuous feedback) compared with feedback trials. In the second half of the training course (i.e., sessions 21–35) larger power values in the , , and bands were found when patients were required to produce positive versus negative SCP shifts. Both across-subject and across-session (within-subject) correlations between spectral EEG parameters, on the one hand, and SCP data, on the other hand, were low and inconsistent, contrary to high and stable correlations between different spectral variables. This fact, as well as the lack of considerable task-dependent effects during the first part of training, indicates that learned SCP shifts did not directly lead to the specific dynamics of the EEG power spectra. Rather, these dynamics were related to nonspecific changes in patients' brain state.  相似文献

Repeated electrical low intensity stimulation of various regions of the brain has been shown to induce epileptic seizure activity. This experimental model of epilepsy has been used in our laboratory in rats. Male rats, anaesthetized with nembutal (20 mg/kg, i.p.) and ketalar (60 mg/kg, i.p.) were implanted stereotaxically with electrodes in the dorsal hippocampus and neocortex and received 2 hours stimulation sessions via the hippocampal electrodes (1 sec, 60 Hz, 200-800 microA) one stimulus per minute, during which electrographical and behavioral seizures were induced. The effect of anticonvulsant drugs was tested on this model: phenobarbital (40 mg/kg) reduced the quantity of epileptic electrographic activity and abolished the behavioral aspects of the seizures; diphenylhydantoin (20 mg/kg) reduced the quantity of epileptic electrographic activity, but had no effect on the behavioral component of the seizures; diazepam (6 mg/kg) only blocked the behavioral component of the seizures leaving the animal stuporous and immobile, but the electrographical component was unaffected; carbamazepine (10 mg/kg) had no effect on the electrographical epileptic seizures and reduced the behavioral aspects, but to a lesser extent than diazepam.  相似文献

Aim: Numerous studies have demonstrated the possible neuroprotective role of lithium treatment against neurological disorders. However, the role of lithium in delayed phase of neuronal death against focal ischemia has not been explored. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effect and molecular mechanisms of post-lithium treatment against cerebral ischemic reperfusion (I/R) injury and associated cognitive deficits in rats. Methods: I/R injury was induced by right middle cerebral artery occlusion and lithium (40 and 60?mg/kg) were given intraperitoneally, 24?h after the insult and continued for 1 week with 24-h interval. Using Lasser Doppler, cerebral blood flow was monitored before, during and after MCAO induction. Besides behavioral, biochemical, and histological evaluation, levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were also estimated. Results: I/R injury resulted in significant elevation of neurological deficits, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cognitive impairments. We found that lithium injection, 24?h after I/R-injury continued for 1 week, dose dependently prevented behavioral abnormality and cognitive impairments. Moreover, lithium attenuated the levels of oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory-cytokines TNF-α level. Further, lithium treatments significantly reduced neuronal damage and augmented healthy neuronal count and improved neuronal density in hippocampus. These neuroprotective effects of delayed lithium treatment were associated with upregulation of neurotrophic factor BDNF levels. Conclusion: Delayed lithium treatment provides neuroprotection against cerebral I/R injury and associated cognitive deficits by upregulating BDNF expression that opens a new avenue to treat I/R injury even after active cell death.  相似文献

Alpha/theta (a/t) neurofeedback training has in the past successfully been used as a complementary therapeutic relaxation technique in the treatment of alcoholism. In spite of positive clinical outcomes, doubts have been cast on the protocol's specificity when compared to alternative relaxation regimes. This study investigated the basic tenet underlying the a/t training rationale, that accurate a/t feedback representation facilitates the generation of these frequency components. Two groups of healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to either (a) real contingent a/t feedback training or (b) a noncontingent mock feedback control condition. The groups were compared on measures of theta/alpha (t/a) ratios within and across training sessions, as well as activational self-report scales after each session. The contingent a/t feedback group displayed significant within-session t/a ratio increments not evident in the mock control group, as well as higher overall t/a ratios in some but not all of the training sessions. No differences were found between the groups in terms of subjective activational phenomenology, in that both groups reported significantly lower levels of activation after training sessions. The data demonstrate that irrespective of considerations of clinical relevance, accurate a/t neurofeedback effectively facilitates production of higher within-session t/a ratios than do noncontingent feedback relaxation.  相似文献

Summary Covalently closed circular (ccc) DNA of uniform monomer size (c. 18×106 daltons) and restriction endonuclease cleavage pattern was isolated from strains of S. coelicolor A3(2) of differing constitution in respect of the SCP1 sex factor: SCP1+, SCP1, SCP1- and NF (integrated SCP1). No such ccc DNA was found in strains of S. lividans 66 or S. parvulus ATCC 12434 whether or not they contained SCP1. These results confirmed that the 18×106 dalton plasmid is not, and does not include, SCP1, which has not so far been isolated by any of a variety of methods.Genetic data served to identify a second sex factor, SCP2, postulated to be present in SCP2+ state in the starting strains and to be capable of mutation to a variant form, SCP2*, with enhanced sex factor activity. From SCP2* strains, SCP2- cultures were isolated, at an average spontaneous frequency of about 0.8%. Crosses of pairs of SCP1- SCP2- strains were almost, but not completely, sterile; thus SCP1 and SCP2 probably contribute nearly all the fertility naturally occurring in the A3(2) strain. The two sex factors share the property of exerting an effect that may be comparable with lethal zygosis caused by F in E. coli: it is shown by SCP1-carrying strains against SCP1-, or SCP2* (but not SCP2+) strains against SCP2- and is revealed as a narrow zone of growth inhibition surrounding the plasmid-carrying culture on a background of the appropriate plasmid-negative strain.Genetically defined SCP2- strains lacked the ccc DNA found in SCP2+ and SCP2* strains. Thus this DNA apparently represents the SCP2 sex factor. A preliminary restriction endonuclease cleavage map of SCP2 was constructed, with single sites for EcoRI and HindIII, four sites for SalPI (=PstI) and more than 20 sites for SalGI (SalI).  相似文献

As global fisheries decline, microbial single‐cell protein (SCP) produced from brewery process water has been highlighted as a potential source of protein for sustainable animal feed. However, biotechnological investigation of SCP is difficult because of the natural variation and complexity of microbial ecology in wastewater bioreactors. In this study, we investigate microbial response across a full‐scale brewery wastewater treatment plant and a parallel pilot bioreactor modified to produce an SCP product. A pyrosequencing survey of the brewery treatment plant showed that each unit process selected for a unique microbial community. Notably, flow equalization basins were dominated by Prevotella, methanogenesis effluent had the highest levels of diversity, and clarifier wet‐well samples were sources of sequences for the candidate bacterial phyla of TM7 and BD1‐5. Next, the microbial response of a pilot bioreactor producing SCP was tracked over 1 year, showing that two different production trials produced two different communities originating from the same starting influent. However, SCP production resulted generally in enrichment of several clades of rhizospheric diazotrophs of Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria in the bioreactor and even more so in the final product. These diazotrophs are potentially useful as the basis of a SCP product for commercial feed production.  相似文献

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms can be difficult to treat. We previously reported that a 20-session brain-computer interface (BCI) attention training programme improved ADHD symptoms. Here, we investigated a new more intensive BCI-based attention training game system on 20 unmedicated ADHD children (16 males, 4 females) with significant inattentive symptoms (combined and inattentive ADHD subtypes). This new system monitored attention through a head band with dry EEG sensors, which was used to drive a feed forward game. The system was calibrated for each user by measuring the EEG parameters during a Stroop task. Treatment consisted of an 8-week training comprising 24 sessions followed by 3 once-monthly booster training sessions. Following intervention, both parent-rated inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms on the ADHD Rating Scale showed significant improvement. At week 8, the mean improvement was −4.6 (5.9) and −4.7 (5.6) respectively for inattentive symptoms and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms (both p<0.01). Cohen’s d effect size for inattentive symptoms was large at 0.78 at week 8 and 0.84 at week 24 (post-boosters). Further analysis showed that the change in the EEG based BCI ADHD severity measure correlated with the change ADHD Rating Scale scores. The BCI-based attention training game system is a potential new treatment for ADHD.

Seventeen subjects performed resistance training of the leg extensor and flexor muscle groups two (2/wk) or three (3/wk) times per week. Changes in the relative myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoform contents (I, IIa and IIx) of the vastus lateralis and isometric, isokinetic and squat-lift one-repetition maximum (1RM) strength were compared between conditions after both a common training period (6 weeks) and number of training sessions (18). After 6 weeks and 18 sessions (9 weeks for the 2/wk group), increments in 1RM strength for the 3/wk and 2/wk groups were similar [effect size (ES) differences ≈0.3, 3/wk > 2/wk], whereas the 2/wk group presented greater isokinetic (ES differences = 0.3–1.2) and isometric (ES differences ≈0.7) strength increases than the 3/wk condition. A significant (P < 0.05) increase in MHC IIa percentage was evident for the 2/wk group after 18 sessions. Both training groups exhibited a trend towards a reduction in the relative MHC IIx and an increase in MHC IIa contents (ES range = 0.5–1.24). However, correlations between changes in the strength and MHC profiles were weak (r 2: 0.0–0.5). Thus, isometric and isokinetic strength responses to variations in training frequency differed from 1RM strength responses, and changes in strength were not strongly related to alterations in relative MHC content. A total of 259 postal questionnaires were sent to all final year vocational trainees and new principals in general practice in the Trent region to find out how much training in paediatrics they had had. Questionnaires were returned by 105 trainees and 139 principals (244; 94%). Overall 72% (175) had taken up a hospital post in paediatrics during training, but among the 138 doctors who were on or had completed a three year vocational training scheme the proportion was slightly higher (82%; 115) (p = 0.01). Among the 175 who had had a post in paediatrics 108 (62%) had been given teaching sessions every week, and for half of these doctors the sessions lasted over one hour a week. Seventy five (54%) of the 139 principals reported that in their training in a general practice they had received no teaching about child health and a fifth said that they had not attended a clinic for children; 47 (34%) had received no training on procedures for dealing with cases of child abuse. The doctors who had held posts as senior house officers in paediatrics were more likely to report that they had adequate skills in paediatrics than those who had not, but overall only 62 (44%) reported that they could run a preschool child health surveillance programme. Extra paediatric posts in hospital are needed, but in the mean time improvements can be made to the teaching content in hospital and in the general practice attachment and postgraduate training in paediatrics provided for all general practitioners.  相似文献

This study is the first to demonstrate outcomes of slow cortical potential (SCP) Neurofeedback training in chronic tinnitus. A 50-year old male patient with tinnitus participated in three SCP training blocks, separated with 1-month breaks. After the training the patient reported decreased tinnitus loudness and pitch, as well as improved quality of daily life. A quantitative electroencephalography analysis revealed close to normal changes of resting state bioelectrical activity in cortical areas considered to be involved in tinnitus generation. The present case study indicates that SCP Neurofeedback training can be considered a promising method for tinnitus treatment.  相似文献

Supercooling point (SCP) and cold‐hardiness of the pollen beetle Meligethes aeneus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) were investigated. Mature eggs from the oviduct were supercooled on average to ?28.0 °C and from oilseed rape buds to ?24.4 °C; first instars were supercooled to ?21.0 °C and second instars to ?16.8 °C. Despite their high supercooling ability, none of the eggs survived 24 h exposure to ?2.5 °C. The supercooling ability of adults varied significantly among feeding and non‐feeding beetles: high SCPs prevailed during the whole warm period, being about ?12 °C; low values of SCP of ?20 °C dominated in non‐feeding beetles. In spring and autumn, beetles displayed the same acclimation efficiency: after 1 week of exposure at 2.0 °C with no access to food their SCPs were depressed equally by about 3 °C. Meligethes aeneus beetles have a different response to low temperatures depending on the season. The lowest tolerance was found in reproductively active beetles after emergence from overwintering sites; the time needed to kill 50% of individuals (Ltime50) was 56.2 h at ?7 °C and the lower lethal temperature needed to kill 50% (Ltemp50) after 24 h exposure was ?8.6 °C. Cold hardiness increased from midsummer to midwinter; Ltime50 was 80 h in August, 182.8 h in September, and 418.1 h in January. Lethal temperature after 24 h exposure was ?9.1 °C in August and ?9.8 °C in September. In February, after diapause, the beetles started to loose their cold tolerance, and Ltemp50 was slightly increased to ?9.5 °C. Hibernating beetles tolerated long exposure at ?7 °C well, but mortality was high after short exposure if the temperature dropped below ?9 °C for 24 h. Despite the season, the beetles died at temperatures well above their mean SCP; consequently, SCP is not a suitable index for cold hardiness of M. aeneus.  相似文献

Microsurgical techniques of callosotomy were effective in relieving medically intractable epilepsy in 14 of 16 patients. Intra-arterial digital angiography has been used preoperatively to assess drainage of the veins of the frontal lobe. MRI is useful in verifying the postoperative extent of corpus callosum section. Patients with bilateral frontal lesions and unilateral destructive lesions responded to callosotomy. None of the patients had an increase in seizures after the procedure.  相似文献

Increased circulating adiponectin and insulin sensitivity are usually observed after body fat loss induced by a weight‐loss diet. Progressive resistance training (PRT) without a concomitant weight‐loss diet significantly decreases visceral fat, thus improving insulin sensitivity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of combined 16‐week PRT and weight‐loss diet on circulating adiponectin and insulin sensitivity index. Thirty‐four obese (BMI: 30–40 kg/m2) women, aged 40–60 year, were randomized to three groups: a control group (C; n = 9); a diet group (WL; n = 12) with a caloric restriction of 500 kcal/d; and a diet plus resistance training group (WL+RT; n = 13) with the same caloric restriction as group WL and a 16‐week supervised whole body PRT of two sessions/week. Both WL and WL+RT groups showed similar decreases in body mass (?6.3% and ?7.7%) and visceral fat (?19.9% and ?20.5%). WL resulted in an expected increase in circulating levels of adiponectin (P = 0.07) and insulin sensitivity. However, circulating total adiponectin decreased (P < 0.05) in WL+RT group, whereas an improvement in different cardiovascular risk factors (insulin sensitivity, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C), etc.) was observed. In conclusion, in obese women a 16‐week combined PRT and weight‐loss diet is accompanied by significant improvements in different cardiovascular risk factors in spite of a significant decrease of circulating adiponectin.  相似文献

Slow cortical potentials (SCPs) are considered to reflect the regulation of attention resources and cortical excitability in cortical neuronal networks. Impaired attentional functioning, as found in patients with schizophrenic disorders, may covary with impaired SCP regulation. This hypothesis was tested using a self-regulation paradigm. Twelve medicated male schizophrenic inpatients and 12 healthy male controls received continuous feedback of their SCPs, during intervals of 8 s each, by means of a visual stimulus (a stylized rocket) moving horizontally across a TV screen. The position of the feedback stimulus was a linear function of the integrated SCP at each point in time during the feedback interval. Subjects were required to increase or reduce negative SCPs (referred to pretrial baseline) depending on the presentation of a discriminative stimulus. The correct response was indicated by the amount of forward movement of the feedback stimulus and by monetary rewards. Schizophrenics participated in 20 sessions (each comprising 110 trials), while controls participated in 5 sessions. Compared with the healthy controls, schizophrenics showed no significant differentiation between negativity increase and negativity suppression during the first sessions. However, in the last 3 sessions, patients achieved differentiation similar to controls, demonstrating the acquisition of SCP control after extensive training.  相似文献

To analyse biofeedback training by microperimeter MP-1 (Nidek Technologies) on patients with Age Related Maculopathy (AMD). We enrolled 15 patients (10 female and 5 male) and examined total of 27 eyes with AMD. All the patient underwent 10 training sessions of 10 min for each eye, performed once a week using the MP-1 biofeedback examination. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test. p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. All patients displayed an improvement in visual acuity, fixation behaviour, retinal sensitivity an reading speed. The mean character size value improved from 36.4 to 11.7; this result was statistically significant (p = 0.031). A biofeedback examination using the MP-1 microperimeter can help the brain to memorize the final fixation location by increasing attention modulation, thereby providing an efficient preferred retinal locus for visual tasks in patients with macular disease and central scotoma.  相似文献
