The rich Deseadan fauna from the locality of Salla Luribay (Bolivia) documents the last occurrence of archaeohyracids, a poorly known group of small typotherian notoungulates. Exceptionally, archaeohyracid remains are extremely abundant in the Salla deposits and are assigned to a single new species Archaeohyrax suniensis sp. nov . The anatomy of the new taxon is presented and the ontogeny of the cheek teeth is described. Archaeohyrax patagonicus Ameghino, 1897 from the Deseadan of Patagonia is also redescribed and compared with the new Bolivian species. Additionally, juvenile teeth of Sallatherium altiplanense (Hegetotheriidae) are described because they provide crucial phylogenetic information for understanding the phylogeny of archaeohyracids. A cladistic analysis performed on archaeohyracids and hegetotheriids supports for the first time the existence of a clade of late archaeohyracids (post‐Mustersan), which is the sister taxon of all hegetotheriids. It also argues for the origin of mesotheriids within archaeohyracids and for the existence of a hegetotheriine clade. These conclusions fit well with temporal data known for each taxa. Nevertheless, the present analysis also underlines the fact that the lack of data concerning the cranial anatomy of many archaeohyracids (Eohyrax, Pseudhyrax, Archaeotypotherium, Protarchaeohyrax) weakens the phylogenetic signal. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 458–509. 相似文献

We describe a new species of gundi (Rodentia: Ctenodactylidae: Ctenodactylinae), Sayimys negevensis, on the basis of cheek teeth from the Early Miocene of the Rotem Basin, southern Israel. The Rotem ctenodactylid differs from all known ctenodactylid species, including Sayimys intermedius, which was first described from the Middle Miocene of Saudi Arabia. Instead, it most resembles Sayimys baskini from the Early Miocene of Pakistan in characters of the m1-2 (e.g., the mesoflexid shorter than the metaflexid, the obliquely orientated hypolophid, and the presence of a strong posterolabial ledge) and the upper molars (e.g., the paraflexus that is longer than the metaflexus). However, morphological (e.g., presence of a well-developed paraflexus on unworn upper molars) and dimensional (regarding, in particular, the DP4 and M1 or M2) differences between the Rotem gundi and Sayimys baskini distinguish them and testify to the novelty and endemicity of the former. In its dental morphology, Sayimys negevensis sp. nov. shows a combination of both the ultimate apparition of key-characters and incipient features that would be maintained and strengthened in latter ctenodactylines. Thus, it is a pivotal species that bridges the gap between an array of primitive ctenodactylines and the most derived, Early Miocene and later, gundis. 相似文献

The most genetically divergent populations of the European snow vole Chionomys nivalis occupy the extreme eastern range of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It was recently suggested that subspecies C. n. spitzenbergerae from the Central Taurus Mountains (Turkey) represents a highly divergent lineage of C. nivalis from the Alada? Range which induced us to address its status by examining topotype specimens. Two females karyotyped displayed 54 mitotic chromosomes of 25 acrocentric autosomal pairs. One of the smallest autosomal pairs was heteromorphic in both specimens, consisting of a submetacentric and an acrocentric chromosomes (NFa = 53). Cytochrome b sequences however unambiguously clustered both individuals with reference sequences from C. nivalis from Turkey. We conclude that a deviant haplotype from the Alada? Range does not represent C. n. spitzenbergerae. Its taxonomic identity was not resolved in our study. Further attention should be devoted to snow voles from Central Anatolia and Western Iran, which are characterized by cranial peculiarities. 相似文献

The Cainotheriidae are small artiodactyls that suddenly appeared in the late Eocene of western Europe. A revision of early Oligocene cainotheriid lineages is proposed on the basis of newly dated material from the Quercy Phosphorites (south-western France). A significant diversification of the group occurred at the end of the Eocene. Few species seem to have persisted through the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, but the Cainotheriidae subsequently diversified rapidly during the early Oligocene. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 144 , 145−166. 相似文献

Athough over a hundred species of fossil aplodontoids have been described since the extant species, Aplodontia rufa (the mountain beaver), was first described by Rafinesque in 1817, a thorough survey of the relationships among all the species in this clade has not been undertaken since McGrew's study in 1941. Here, a complete phylogenetic analysis of all published species of aplodontoids is used to reconstruct the evolutionary relationships within the clade, and to present an updated classification of the Aplodontoidea. Several of the traditionally recognized subfamilies are found to be paraphyletic, namely the Prosciurinae, the Allomyinae, and the Meniscomyinae. Others, however, including the Aplodontinae and the Mylagaulidae, appear to be monophyletic. These latter two taxa, which include all of the hypsodont members of the aplodontoid clade, seem to be sister taxa. The history of the aplodontoid clade shows several episodes of rapid diversification in the Early Oligocene, the Late Oligocene, and the Early to Middle Miocene. The Ansomyinae and Aplodontinae show comparatively low speciation rates. The patterns of change in morphology and evolutionary rates suggest a need for a more detailed study of the causes of diversification, extinction, and ecological change in this lineage. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 153 , 769–838. 相似文献

A new genus of Gliridae, Simplomys gen. nov. is proposed. It contains glirids with a simplified dental pattern from the European Early and Middle Miocene. Simplomys gen. nov. includes several species originally described as Pseudodryomys such as Simplomys simplicidens, Simplomys robustus, Simplomys julii, and Simplomys aljaphi. In addition, a new species, Simplomys meulenorum sp. nov. , is proposed from the Spanish Miocene. The species of this genus share not only a very reduced and simplified dental morphology, but also unique dental proportions that clearly separate them from any other genera of Gliridae. Simplomys gen. nov. is recorded in most of the fossil faunas from the Early and Middle Miocene of the Iberian Peninsula, and shows the maximum diversity in this area during Mammal Neogene Zones MN 3 and MN 4. The genus has been also recorded in other European countries such as France, Germany, and Switzerland, conferring to this very characteristic taxon an important role for biochronological correlations within the European continent. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 157 , 622–652. 相似文献

The origin of the Cricetidae and the relationships among earliest species from Central and East Asia are still disputed. The taxonomic status of some Eocene cricetid taxa is also doubtful. A parsimony analysis based on 65 cranial and dental characters and including 22 early Myomorpha was performed to elucidate these issues. As a result, the North American Elymys, known as the first Myodonta, belongs to dipodoid rodents, although it shares a suite of characters with the first cricetids. This implies that the split between dipodoids and muroids occurred in North America during the early middle Eocene, as previously supposed. The disputed Simimys and Nonomys could constitute an early dipodoid radiation. It appears that the earliest offshoot of the cricetid clade is the Asian genus Palasiomys. This taxon has a more advanced cricetid plan than contemporaneous dipodoids. The genus Raricricetodon no longer exists here because it is polyphyletic; the species are included in Palasiomys (P. minor, P. trapezius) and Pappocricetodon (P. zhongtiaensis). The genus Pappocricetodon displays a complete cricetid plan associated with both the loss of P4 and the development of an anterocone on M1. The disputed genera Eocricetodon and Oxynocricetodon characterize the beginning of the Oligocene radiations of Eucricetodontinae throughout the Holarctic continents.

The oldest known mesotheriids are referred to the genus Trachytherus , a taxon traditionally included in its own subfamily 'Trachytheriinae'. The ontogeny, morphological variation and systematics of the genus Trachytherus are still poorly understood and the monophyly of this taxon is questionable. For the first time, a large collection of basal mesotheriids (belonging to the genus Trachytherus ) yielded by the Bolivian Salla beds (Deseadan, late Oligocene) and previously referred to T. spegazzinianus was included in a large-scale analysis. This has led to the recognition of a unique new species in the locality of Salla-Luribay, distinct from T. spegazzinianus : Trachytherus alloxus sp. nov . Skulls of this species are described and cheekteeth variation range throughout ontogeny is discussed. These new data are incorporated in a parsimony analysis of basal mesotheriids. The most probable hypothesis of a clade T. spegazzinianus -mesotheriines is discussed. The distinction of the new Salla species from the Patagonian species T. spegazzinianus confirms the faunal differences observed between these Bolivian and Patagonian Deseadan localities. Moreover, the assignment to Trachytherus spegazzinianus of mesotheriid remains from the Bolivian Lacayani deposits complicates the problem of these faunal differences. Further systematic investigations on the Lacayani fauna and on the age of the Patagonian localities are needed. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 152 , 153–200. 相似文献

Toothed mysticetes of the family Aetiocetidae from Oligocene rocks of the North Pacific play a key role in interpretations of cetacean evolution because they are transitional in grade between dorudontine archaeocetes and edentulous mysticetes. The holotype skull of Aetiocetus weltoni from the late Oligocene (28–24 Ma) of Oregon, USA, has been further prepared, revealing additional morphological features of the basicranium, rostrum and dentary that have important implications for mysticete evolution and functional anatomy. The palate of Aetiocetus weltoni preserves diminutive lateral palatal foramina and associated delicate sulci which appear to be homologous with the prominent palatal foramina and sulci that occur along the lateral portion of the palate in extant mysticetes. In modern baleen whales these foramina allow passage of branches of the superior alveolar artery, which supplies blood to the epithelia of the developing baleen racks. As homologous structures, the lateral palatal foramina of A. weltoni suggest that baleen was present in this Oligocene toothed mysticete. Cladistic analysis of 46 cranial and dental characters supports monophyly of the Aetiocetidae, with toothed mysticetes Janjucetus and Mammalodon positioned as successive sister taxa. Morawanacetus is the earliest diverging aetiocetid with Chonecetus as sister taxon to Aetiocetus species. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 154 , 308–352. 相似文献

Dental characters are importantly used for reconstructing the evolutionary history of mammals, because teeth represent the most abundant material available for the fossil species. However, the characteristics of dental renewal are presently poorly used, probably because dental formulae are frequently not properly established, whereas they could be of high interest for evolutionary and developmental issues. One of the oldest rodent families, the Ctenodactylidae, is intriguing in having longstanding disputed dental formulae. Here, we investigated 70 skulls among all extant ctenodactylid genera (Ctenodactylus, Felovia, Massoutiera and Pectinator) by using X-ray conventional and synchrotron microtomography in order to solve and discuss these dental issues. Our study clearly indicates that Massoutiera, Felovia and Ctenodactylus differ from Pectinator not only by a more derived dentition, but also by a more derived eruptive sequence. In addition to molars, their dentition only includes the fourth deciduous premolars, and no longer bears permanent premolars, conversely to Pectinator. Moreover, we found that these premolars are lost during adulthood, because of mesial drift of molars. Mesial drift is a striking mechanism involving migration of teeth allowed by both bone remodeling and dental resorption. This dental innovation is to date poorly known in rodents, since it is only the second report described. Interestingly, we noted that dental drift in rodents is always associated with high-crowned teeth favoring molar size enlargement. It can thus represent another adaptation to withstand high wear, inasmuch as these rodents inhabit desert environments where dust is abundant. A more accurate study of mesial drift in rodents would be very promising from evolutionary, biological and orthodontic points of view. 相似文献

A new genus and species of aplodontid rodent, Proansomys dureensis, from the late Oligocene of the northern Junggar Basin of China is described. The new genus is referred to as Ansomyinae because the ectoloph on the upper cheek teeth, although not fully crested, has attained the same characteristic bucket-handle-shaped configuration as other members of the subfamily. It represents the earliest record of the subfamily yet discovered in Asia and is more plesiomorphic than species of the genus Ansomys in having a partly crested ectoloph, a lower degree of lophodonty, and less complex tooth basins (lacking accessory lophules). Proansomys has transitional features between Prosciurus and Ansomys, suggesting that the Ansomyinae derived from a group of aplodontids related to Prosciurus, as did other advanced aplodontid rodents. This provides new light on the paleobiogeography of the Ansomyinae. 相似文献

A new karyotype for blind mole rats was recorded in Tunceli province in Eastern Turkey. The karyotype contained 44 chromosomes, including 13 biarmed pairs, 7 acrocentric pairs, and one heteromorphic pair with a submetacentric and an acrocentric homologue in the autosomal complement (FNa=69). The X chromosome was submetacentric and the Y chromosome medium-sized subtelocentric (FN=73). Distinct dark centromeric C-bands were observed on most of the biarmed and three pairs of the acrocentric autosomes. The NORs were detected on short arms of three subtelocentric pairs and one acrocentric pair of autosomes. The diploid number of chromosomes and the karyotype characteristics observed are obviously unique among hitherto studied populations of blind mole rats and the complement can be evaluated as a new chromosome race of Nannospalax xanthodon. The distribution ranges of individual chromosome races of the species recorded in Eastern Anatolia are revised and possible interracial hybridization is discussed in respect of the finding of a new race. 相似文献

In this paper, a new species of Vasseuromys, V. bergasensis sp. nov., from the locality of Bergasa (Ebro Basin, Spain), is described. Bergasa contains a fauna belonging to the Late Oligocene (zone MP30), composed—among other species—of Issiodoromys pseudanaema and Rhodanomys transiens. The main diagnostic features of V. bergasensis sp. nov. are the presence of a long centrolophid (fused or not to the mesoconid) in the lower molars, a large reduction in the number and length of extra ridges in the upper and lower molars, the absence of extra ridges between metalophid and centrolophid and between centrolophid and mesolophid, and the absence of the metatrope in more than half the specimens of the upper teeth M1 and M2. V. bergasensis sp. nov. is similar in size to V. elegans and smaller than the other members of the genus. The age and simple dental pattern of the new species of Vasseuromys allow us to hypothesize about relationships within the genus. 相似文献

Itatodon tatarinovi Lopatin et Averianov, 2005 is represented by two lower molars and a lower molar fragment from the upper part of the Itat Formation (Bathonian Stage) of the Berezovskii quarry (southern Krasnoyarsk Region). Based on the presence of a pseudotalonid, bordered by the crests a-b, b-e, e-g, and a-g, Itatodon is assigned to the endemic Asian family Tegotheriidae. In this genus, the crest a-b is reduced and the thick lingual cingulid is better developed than that of other docodonts. Phylogenetic analysis of Docodonta shows paraphyly of Morganucodonta relative to docodonts and independent development of the pseudotalonid in the Tegotheriidae and the clade comprising Krusatodon, Castorocauda, Cyrtlatherium, and Dsungarodon. 相似文献

A new genus and species of long-clawed mouse (Rodentia: Muridae) from temperate rainforests of Chile 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Morphological comparisons of long-clawed mice in southern South America reveal the existence of four genera, only three of which are named. The fourth genus is described and compared with Geoxus, Chelemys and Notiomys. External, cranial and dental characters indicate that the new mouse is most closely related to Geoxus , the raton topo or mole mouse. Geoxus and the new form may be distinguished using both qualitative and quantitative characters. The incipient specializations of the new mouse for fossorial life suggest that it represents an early offshoot along the line leading to the more highly specialized Geoxus. Discovery of a new mammalian genus in Chile, where naturalists have been active for more than two centuries, indicates the importance of continued biological surveys, even in ostensibly well-studied regions. The new mouse reinforces the strong differentiation of faunas inhabiting southern beech ( Nothofagus ) forests in South America, where generic endemism of rodents and marsupials reaches 67%. 相似文献
