Flowering in the grasses has been the subject of a great deal of previous research, yet much remains to be learned concerning the role of environmental and endogenous factors in controlling the actual events of anthesis. The objective of this study has been to investigate further two key processes, namely lodicule function and stamen extension. The lodicules are the two diminutive bodies lying between the lemma and the ovary base in the grass floret which, by expanding rapidly at the time of anthesis, lever away the rigid lemma allowing anthers and stigmas to emerge. Expansion results from the swelling of a cushion of tissue at the base of each lodicule. We show that this is driven by the influx of water associated with the accumulation of K+in specialized distensible cells of the basal cushion. The stamen filaments normally elongate synchronously with the enlarging lodicules, again with the passage of K+into the extending cells. The walls of distensible cells of the lodicule bear lattice-like cellulosic thickenings with transverse bars in an outer layer and longitudinal bars in an inner, a basket-like disposition allowing rapid expansion while preserving the integrity of the protoplast. The microfibrils in the walls of the cylindrical filament cells are disposed helically, constraining expansion to the longitudinal axis. The principal extraneous factors initiating lodicule function in mature florets of rye are mechanical disturbance and light. In the field radiant heat is unlikely to be a dominant factor. In a customarily cleistogamous cultivar of wheat, sporadic florets open chasmogamously in intense light, both lodicules and stamen filaments enlarging. In cleistogamous flowers in the same inflorescence the lodicules fail to enlarge while the filaments extend, suggesting that the influx of osmoticum into the two sets of organs is independently controlled.  相似文献

The vascular system for the two lodicules in a floret of Dactylis glomerata L. was studied in serial sections. The floret stele contained a few modified tracheary elements and xylem transfer cells enveloped by a phloem of squat sieve-tube members and intermediary cells. A single sieve tube and associated phloem parenchyma exited the right and left sides of the stele and upon nearing the base of each lodicule branched and formed the minor veins of the lodicule. The minor veins underwent limited branching and anastomosing to form a small three-dimensional system which described an arc during its ascent in the adaxial portion of each lodicule. The sieve tubes in the minor veins extended halfway up the lodicule and contained short sieve-tube members with transverse, slightly oblique, or lateral simple sieve plates. The associated phloem parenchyma cells were intermediary cells, companion cells, and less intimate parenchyma cells. Intermediary cells terminated the minor veins and touched the distal ends of the terminal sieve-tube members, which lacked distal sieve plates. Although the transverse area of the sieve-tube members remained constant up the lodicule, the transverse area of the associated phloem parenchyma fluctuated.  相似文献

Morphological variation in Ephedra (Gnetales) is limited and confusing from an evolutionary perspective, with parallelisms and intraspecific variation. However, recent analyses of molecular data provide a phylogenetic framework for investigations of morphological traits, albeit with few informative characters in the investigated gene regions. We document morphological, anatomical and histological variation patterns in the female reproductive unit and test the hypothesis that some Early Cretaceous fossils, which share synapomorphies with Ephedra, are members of the extant clade. Results indicate that some morphological features are evolutionarily informative although intraspecific variation is evident. Histology and anatomy of cone bracts and seed envelopes show clade‐specific variation patterns. There is little evidence for an inclusion of the Cretaceous fossils in the extant clade. Rather, a hypothesized general pattern of reduction of the vasculature in the ephedran seed envelope, probably from four vascular bundles in the fossils, to ancestrally three in the living clade, and later to two, is consistent with phylogenetic and temporal analyses, which indicate that extant diversity evolved after the Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary. Notwithstanding striking similarities between living and Cretaceous Ephedra, available data indicate that the Mesozoic diversity went almost entirely extinct in the late Cretaceous causing a bottleneck effect in Ephedra, still reflected today by an extraordinarily low level of genetic and structural diversity. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 163 , 387–430.  相似文献

Anuran vocalizations are valuable in the determination of species identity and have the potential to discriminate intraspecific variation. We developed novel bioacoustic sampling techniques, based on Fast Fourier Transforms, to increase the precision and sensitivity of male advertisement call analysis and applied the method to European water frogs. This approach robustly separated the three types of north European water frogs (Rana ridibunda, R. lessonae and their viable, fertile hybrid R. esculenta) by their call subunit characteristics. The hybrid frog exhibited a high frequency call component absent from both the parental species. Furthermore, call analysis demonstrated significant intraspecific differences among populations of all three frog types. Call characters of R. ridibunda changed systematically as a function of longitude. This trend may reflect either clinal variation in selection pressures across Europe, or the consequences of drift following postglacial colonization from eastern refugia. High resolution vocalization analysis therefore provides a potentially useful method for investigating intraspecific differentiation and the phylogeographical origins of anuran distributions. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London. Heterostyly is a genetic polymorphism in which plant populations possess two (distyly) or three (tristyly) morphs with flowers differing reciprocally in stigma and anther height. Sex organ deployment has been described as being highly variable among and within species of several distylous taxa belonging to different taxonomic groups. However, the number of studies considering within‐species disparities is still limited. For a better overview of the existing amount of variation that can occur within and between heterostylous species, we sampled 46 populations of six Melochia spp., a style‐polymorphic genus in Cuba. We characterized the floral morphology in all populations and described a set of ancillary characters per species. All of these Melochia spp. are distylous, except for the monomorphic M. nodiflora. The S‐morph produces fewer, larger pollen than L‐morphs, and has verrucose ornamentation. The L‐morph produces reticulate pollen and has larger stigmatic papillae than the S‐morph. The monomorphic M. nodiflora shows ancillary characteristics that are similar to the L‐morph individuals in the related species. As expected, there are differences in ancillary characters among species and also dissimilarities in reciprocity among and within species of Melochia. Our results highlight the importance of considering intraspecific variation in the morphometric characterization of heterostylous taxa. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 176 , 147–158.  相似文献

The anatomy and morphology of leaves in Carex have the potential to be taxonomically useful. However, studies on the variability of leaf characteristics in the genus are sparse. Researchers therefore risk using leaf anatomical characters without the knowledge of whether they are consistent in a species. We examined 22 qualitative and seven quantitative leaf anatomy characters from transverse leaf sections to test their consistency across 11 Carex spp. The characters were clearly described and primarily microscopic. Some characters were found to exhibit high levels of intraspecific variation, whereas other characters exhibited high levels of consistency in a species, including the shape of the leaf section, the density of papillae and the size of epidermal cells. Caution must be applied when choosing leaf anatomy to delimit taxa because of the intraspecific variability found in some characters, but sufficient numbers of invariant characters exist to provide useful taxonomic separation. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 172 , 371–384.  相似文献

Species with larger geographic distributions are more likely to encounter a greater variety of environmental conditions and barriers to gene flow than geographically‐restricted species. Thus, even closely‐related species with similar life‐history strategies might vary in degree and geographic structure of variation if they differ in geographic range size. In the present study, we investigated this using samples collected across the geographic ranges of eight species of fiddler crabs (Crustacea: Uca) from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America. Morphological variation in the carapace was assessed using geometric morphometric analysis of 945 specimens. Although the eight Uca species exhibit different degrees of intraspecific variation, widespread species do not necessarily exhibit more intraspecific or geographic variation in carapace morphology. Instead, species with more intraspecific variation show stronger morphological divergence among populations. This morphological divergence is partly a result of allometric growth coupled with differences in maximum body size among populations. On average, 10% of total within‐species variation is attributable to allometry. Possible drivers of the remaining morphological differences among populations include gene flow mediated by ocean currents and plastic responses to various environmental stimuli, with isolation‐by‐distance playing a less important role. The results obtained indicate that morphological divergence among populations can occur over shorter distances than expected based on dispersal potential. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 248–270.  相似文献

A three-dimensional reconstruction of a fertile floret stele of Panicum dichotomiflorum approaching anthesis was made by a new technique using superimposition of tracings of 80, 1-μm thick serial sections, cleared tracing film, and mounting adhesive. From a collateral bundle, which also served as the median trace to the fertile lemma, most of the vascular tissue branched adaxially and horizontally to become the sole vascular supply to the two lodicules, three stamens, and pistil. The xylem branched at a low level to form a broad and long vessel plexus. The phloem branched at a higher level to overlay the vessel plexus on the right and left with an arc of horizontal sieve tubes in a phloem plexus. Those sieve tubes and vessels which rose after branching from the horizontal plexi assumed a more vertical course in the floret stele. Traces to the right and left lodicules arose from the lower abaxial portions of the flanks of the floret stele. Vessels ascended vertically from the xylem plexus and passed through the phloem plexi and joined with the sieve tubes there to exit at the same level and become the right and left lodicule traces. The vascular tissues to the three filament traces arose from different higher levels of the stele. The sieve tubes for the median filament trace arose vertically from the abaxial side between but above the lodicule traces. At higher levels the sieve tubes for the lateral filaments rose from the horizontal arcs of the flanks of the stele and departed it tangentially. The vessels destined to the filament traces arose in the center of the floret stele from adaxial portions of the horizontal plexus, ascended between the arcs of phloem, exited the stele simultaneously above the phloem of the traces, and followed the courses of their respective sieve tubes. The adaxially displaced apex of the floret stele then contained the vascular tissue related to the pistil. All the sieve tubes and vessels of the floret stele were embedded in a matrix of intermediary cells. The peripheral intermediary cells associated with the vessel plexus were xylem transfer cells with pronounced wall ingrowths. At higher levels in the floret stele, intermediary cells in scattered locations near sieve tubes or vessels had less conspicuous wall ingrowths. No preferred orientation of transfer cells with any particular trace was noted.  相似文献

Anatomical features of basal leaves, pedicels and tepals of 22 species of Gagea belonging to four sections (Platyspermum, Plecostigma, Gagea and Didymobulbos) are investigated. Anatomical characters are mapped onto a molecular phylogenetic tree and their evolution is evaluated. The systematic importance of the anatomical characters is discussed. Anatomical characters are more systematically useful in the Irano‐Turanian taxa than in Euro‐Siberian taxa. The presence of collenchyma and/or sclerenchyma and the pentagonal outline of the transverse section of the basal leaf is found in Irano‐Turanian taxa of section Platyspermum and is mostly absent in Euro‐Siberian taxa. A diagnostic key based on combined anatomical characters is provided. The level of variation in anatomical characters is greater in the basal leaf than the pedicel and lowest in the tepals. Convergent evolution in anatomical characters is associated with ecological shifts between sunny, open, dry habitats and closed, humid habitats. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 164 , 155–177.  相似文献

Drought‐induced xylem embolism is a key process closely related to plant mortality during extreme drought events. However, this process has been poorly investigated in crop species to date, despite the observed decline of crop productivity under extreme drought conditions. Interspecific variation in hydraulic traits has frequently been reported, but less is known about intraspecific variation in crops. We assessed the intraspecific variability of embolism resistance in four sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) accessions grown in well‐watered conditions. Vulnerability to embolism was determined by the in situ flow‐centrifuge method (cavitron), and possible trade‐offs between xylem safety, xylem efficiency and growth were assessed. The relationship between stem anatomy and hydraulic traits was also investigated. Mean P 50 was ?3 MPa, but significant variation was observed between accessions, with values ranging between ?2.67 and ?3.22 MPa. Embolism resistance was negatively related to growth and positively related to xylem‐specific hydraulic conductivity. There is, therefore, a trade‐off between hydraulic safety and growth but not between hydraulic safety and efficiency. Finally, we found that a few anatomical traits, such as vessel density and the area of the vessel lumen relative to that of the secondary xylem, were related to embolism resistance, whereas stem tissue lignification was not. Further investigations are now required to investigate the link between the observed variability of embolism resistance and yield, to facilitate the identification of breeding strategies to improve yields in an increasingly arid world.  相似文献

Superficial similarities among unrelated species are often a result of convergent evolution and can cause considerable taxonomic confusion. A case in point is Satyrium eurycalcaratum , described here as a new species, which has been confused with several other Satyrium spp. with similar long‐spurred, white flowers. A phylogenetic analysis, based on molecular data, indicated that S. eurycalcaratum is not closely related to any of the species with which it has been previously confused. A comparative analysis of morphological characters in the seven South African Satyrium spp. with long‐spurred, white flowers showed that each of these, including S. eurycalcaratum , is characterized by a unique combination of traits. Despite the similarity in pollination syndrome characters, such as spur length and flower colour, variation in rostellum structure was particularly pronounced and four distinctive forms were present. There was no phylogenetic signal in patterns of interspecific rostellum variation, as some closely related species had different rostella, whereas some distantly related species shared similar rostellum structures. We therefore conclude that the use of rostellum traits in conjunction with phylogenetic evidence can resolve species delimitations among orchid species that share the same pollination syndrome. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 166 , 417–430.  相似文献

Offspring size is a key characteristic in life histories, reflecting maternal investment per offspring and, in marine invertebrates, being linked to mode of development. Few studies have focused explicitly on intraspecific variation and plasticity in developmental characteristics such as egg size and hatching size in marine invertebrates. We measured over 1000 eggs and hatchlings of the marine gastropods Crepidula atrasolea and Crepidula ustulatulina from two sites in Florida. A common‐garden experiment showed that egg size and hatching size were larger at 23 °C than at 28 °C in both species. In C. ustulatulina, the species with significant genetic population structure in cytochrome oxidase I (COI), there was a significant effect of population: Eggs and hatchlings from the Atlantic population were smaller than those from the Gulf. The two populations also differed significantly in hatchling shape. Population effects were not significant in C. atrasolea, the species with little genetic population structure in COI, and were apparent through their marginal interaction with temperature. In both species, 60–65% of the variation in egg size and hatching size was a result of variation among females and, in both species, the population from the Atlantic coast showed greater temperature‐mediated plasticity than the population from the Gulf. These results demonstrate that genetic differentiation among populations, plastic responses to variation in environmental temperature, and differences between females all contribute significantly to intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 489–499.  相似文献

Interspecific comparisons suggest a strong association between cool climates and viviparity in reptiles. However, intraspecific comparisons, which provide an opportunity to identify causal pathways and to distinguish facultative (phenotypically plastic) effects from canalized (genetically fixed) responses, are lacking. We documented the reproductive traits in an alpine oviparous lizard, and manipulated thermal regimes of gravid females and their eggs to identify proximate causes of life‐history variation. Embryonic development at oviposition was more advanced in eggs laid by females from high‐elevation populations than in eggs produced by females from lower elevations. In the laboratory, experimentally imposed low maternal body temperatures delayed oviposition and resulted in more advanced embryonic development at oviposition. Warm conditions both in utero and in the nest increased hatching success and offspring body size. Our intraspecific comparisons support the hypothesis that viviparity has evolved in cold‐climate squamates because of the direct fitness advantages that warm temperatures provide developing offspring. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 642–655.  相似文献

Plants of Polemonium viscosum have flowers that are either sweet or skunky in scent. The two morphs are preferentially pollinated by insects of strongly contrasting body size: bumblebee queens specialize on sweet flowers, flies on skunky ones. In this study 13 characters were examined in plant specimens from five populations to identify major components of intraspecific variation in flower and inflorescence morphology and test their correlation with floral scent. Factor analysis identified four major axes of morphological variation. The first explained 22% of the variance among specimens and correlated strongly with four flower size characters: sepal length, corolla tube length, corolla lobe width, and corolla lobe length. Floral scent morphs differed significantly in the multivariate representation of flower size defined by these characters. Sweet flowers had wider corolla lobes, longer corolla tubes, and longer sepals than skunky ones. Corolla lobe width accounted for the greatest amount of intermorph divergence. Divergence in flower size between morphs was maintained in mixed populations at four locations in alpine Colorado, with corollas of sweet flowers significantly broader or more flared than those of skunky flowers. Patterns of pollen receipt suggest that this difference is adaptive. In the sweet morph, pollination intensity and purity increased significantly with corolla flare. Conversely, in the skunky morph, corolla flare had little influence on pollination intensity and had a strong negative effect on purity. These findings suggest that selection for effective pollination should favor intraspecific divergence in flower size in Polemonium viscosum.  相似文献

The micromorphology of leaf epidermal cells and stomata of all eight species and one form (11 samples) of Cercis were observed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Both the adaxial and abaxial epidermal cells are polygonal or irregular in shape; the anticlinal walls are straight and arched or undulate. Two types of stomata, which occur only on the abaxial surface of the leaves, are found in the genus. The atypical paracytic type is present in only one species, Cercis chingii, and the anomocytic type is present in all other species. Interspecific differences are minor in the genus with regard to leaf epidermal characters, except for C. chingii, which is characterized by atypical paracytic‐type stomata, a two‐lipped outer stomatal rim, the highest stomatal density and undulate and densely pitted anticlinal walls in the adaxial epidermis. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 539–547.  相似文献
