Alkalinity stress is common in cultured aquatic animals and considered to be one of the major stress factors for fishes when they are transferred to saline‐alkali waters. To evaluate potential effects of alkalinity on the developmental biology of Oryzias latipes, fertilized eggs, larvae and breeding fish were exposed to different carbonate alkalinity concentrations of 1.5–64.5 meq l?1, for 9, 120, and 60 days, respectively. The mortality of embryos significantly increased when exposed to the high concentrations (16.5–64.5 meq l?1). Although more than 50% of survived embryos hatched in 16.5 and 31.4 meq l?1 concentrations of carbonate alkalinity, most were not able to swim up after hatching. Morphological abnormalities such as coagulated embryos, halted embryo development, and hatching failure were observed at stages 15, 29–33 and 38 in high concentrations (31.4, 64.5 meq l?1). Almost all larvae in 16.5 and 31.4 meq l?1 treatments died 70 d post‐hatch. Growth of juveniles exposed to carbonate alkalinity of 5.3 and 8.8 meq l?1 was not significantly different at 70 d and 120 d post‐hatch. The number of eggs released by breeders, the fertilization rate and the hatching rate of eggs were significantly lower in the 31.4 meq l?1 treatment than in other treatments. Although medaka are capable of surviving in high alkalinities (31.4, 64.5 meq l?1) for an extended period of time, these conditions are stressful to the fish, especially at the embryonic and reproductive stages.  相似文献

Brachymystax tsinlingensis Li is a threatened fish species endemic to China. With the problems of environmental factors and seeding breeding diseases, it is important to further improve the efficiency of seeding breeding and the basis of resource protection. This study investigated the acute toxicity of copper, zinc and methylene blue (MB) on hatching, survival, morphology, heart rate (HR) and stress behaviour of B. tsinlingensis. Eggs (diameter: 3.86 ± 0.07 mm, weight: 0.032 ± 0.004 g) of B. tsinlingensis were selected randomly from artificial propagation and developed from eye-pigmentation-stage embryos to yolk-sac stage larvae (length: 12.40 ± 0.02 mm, weight: 0.03 ± 0.001 g) and exposed to different concentrations of Cu, Zn and MB for 144 h in a series of semi-static toxicity tests. The acute toxicity tests indicated that the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) values of the embryos and larvae were 1.71 and 0.22 mg l−1 for copper and 2.57 and 2.72 mg l−1 for zinc, respectively, whereas the MB LC50 after 144-h exposure for embryos and larvae were 67.88 and 17.81 mg l−1, respectively. The safe concentrations of copper, zinc and MB were 0.17, 0.77 and 6.79 mg l−1 for embryos and 0.03, 0.03 and 1.78 mg l−1 for larvae, respectively. Copper, zinc and MB treatments with concentrations greater than 1.60, 2.00 and 60.00 mg l−1, respectively, led to a significantly low hatching rate and significantly high embryo mortality (P < 0.05), and copper and MB treatments with concentrations greater than 0.2 and 20 mg l−1 led to significantly high larvae mortality (P < 0.05). Exposure to copper, zinc and MB resulted in developmental defects, including spinal curvature, tail deformity, vascular system anomalies and discolouration. Moreover, copper exposure significantly reduced the HR of larvae (P < 0.05). The embryos exhibited an obvious change in behaviour, converting from the normal behaviour of emerging from the membrane head first to emerging tail first, with probabilities of 34.82%, 14.81% and 49.07% under copper, zinc and MB treatments, respectively. The results demonstrated that the sensitivity of yolk-sac larvae to copper and MB was significantly higher than that of embryos (P < 0.05) and that B. tsinlingensis embryos or larvae might be more resistant to copper, zinc and MB than other members of the Salmonidae family, which benefits their resource protection and restoration.  相似文献

The chickpea pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is one of the most destructive pests of India and most of the countries. In this experiment, sub-lethal effects of cypermethrin were evaluated against sixth instar larvae of this pest that had ingested insecticide-treated chickpea pods. The LC50, LC30 and LC10 values of cypermethrin were 80.38, 26.65 and 5.41?mg a.i.?L?1, respectively, against sixth instar. The sub-lethal effects on fitness, eggs, larvae, pupae, adult longevity and reproduction were observed in H. armigera population that survived exposure to the sub-lethal doses of LC50, LC30 and LC10 of cypermethrin. Survivorship was reduced to 36?days if H. armigera exposed to the sub-lethal dose of LC50, whereas it was 42?days in unexposed groups. Larvae treated with LC50 dose exhibit lowest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) (0.0413 females/female/day) and highest (0.0517) with the unexposed group. Time taken by H. armigera to complete one generation (Tc) was 40.09?days, while this time significantly lowered to 32.85?days when exposed to the sub-lethal dose of LC30. Hatching eggs were greatly reduced in the larvae exposed to cypermethrin at all the sub-lethal doses. About 430 eggs/female/generation were recorded after treatment with 80.38?mg/L as compared with untreated females (1390). Larvae that were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of cypermethrin exhibited lower pupal weight and prolonged pupal developmental times compared control larvae. The overall fitness performance was better in the unexposed population as compared to the population exposed to sub-lethal doses.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to assess the toxicity of sediment contaminated with cadmium, DDT, chlorpyrifos, and fluoranthene to embryos and larvae of the European clam Ruditapes decussatus, exposed to two sediment fractions, the whole sediment and elutriate. The percentages of abnormal D-shaped larvae and larval mortality have been investigated. The median effective concentration (EC50) values, reducing 50% of the percentage of D-shaped larvae, in whole sediments and elutriates were, respectively, 1.17 mg/kg and 417.1 μgl?1 (3.71 μM) for cadmium, 1.66 mg/kg and 97.8 μgl?1 (0.48 μM) for fluoranthene, 1.71 mg/kg and 384.8 μgl?1 (1.08 μM) for DDT, and 0.96 mg/kg and 339.5 μgl?1 (0.96 μM) for chlorpyrifos. The 96h-median lethal concentrations (LC50) reducing larval survival by 50% were 4.04 mg/kg 654.3 μgl?1 (5.82 μM) for cadmium, 17.41 mg/kg 8666.6 μgl?1 (42.84 μM) for fluoranthene, 3.93 mg/kg and 457.4 μgl?1 (1.29 μM) for DDT, and 2.53 mg/kg and 308.06 μgl?1 (0.87 μM) for chlorpyrifos. Based on EC50 and LC50 comparisons to toxicity data for other marine species, these findings suggest that the R. decussatus embryotoxicity and larvae mortality bioassay were among the most sensitive tools for sediment quality assessment.  相似文献

Sheep breeding has suffered economic losses due to parasitism by gastrointestinal nematodes, particularly Haemonchus contortus. The use of natural products, specifically Tagetes patula, has been suggested as an alternative method of combatting this issue. Chemical analyses of the extracts of this species described in the literature report the presence of important classes of secondary metabolites such as thiophenes, flavonoids, alkaloids, and benzofurans, some of which were identified and isolated in this study. The aim of this work was to test the effect of the essential oil (EO) and the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts (TpEtOH) of T. patula on eggs and larvae of H. contortus, through an egg hatch test (EHT) and a larval development test (LDT). In the EHT, the EO showed 100% inhibition at 0.75 mg mL?1 (LC50 = 0.0780 mg mL?1), and the TpEtOH showed 100% inhibition at 100 mg mL?1 (LC50 = 12.8 mg mL?1). In the LDT, the EO showed 100% inhibition at 0.375 mg mL?1 (LC50 = 0.0400 mg mL?1), and the TpEtOH showed 100% inhibition at 1.56 mg mL?1 (LC50 = 0.340 mg mL?1). Compared to available literature data, the results presented here suggest that the crude extracts of T. patula have substantial potential for controlling this nematode by interrupting its life cycle and/or preventing it from reaching the infective stage.  相似文献

Summary

Nectochaete larvae of the ecologically and economically important ragworm, Nereis virens, were exposed to cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and zinc dissolved in seawater to nominal concentrations ranging from 0 to 5000 μg l?1. Copper was the most toxic (mean LC50 of 76.5 μg l?1 ± 95% CI 73.8–79.2 after 96 h exposure) and so was used for subsequent experiments. Exposure of gametes to greater than 500 μg l?1 copper for 2 or 4 h at 10°C prior to fertilization, or a 10 min exposure during fertilization, significantly reduced embryo developmental success. The effect of copper on larval settlement was also assessed using sediment spiked to a range of concentrations (0, 50, 250, 500, 1000 mg kg!1 dry weight). Significantly fewer larvae were found in sediment of $250 mg kg!1 in comparison to the control or the 50 mg kg!1 treatment. Assessment of living larvae also confirmed a significant reduction in settlement, but in all treatments compared to the control, although the number of dead larvae also increased as the concentrations increased. These effects may have important implications for reproductive success and recruitment of N. virens to polluted sediments.  相似文献

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an important sap‐sucking pest of many plants, including melons and peppers. This study was conducted to determine the effects of sublethal exposure to flonicamid and imidacloprid and the mechanisms by which these insecticides affect the feeding behavior of A. gossypii. The median lethal concentrations (LC50) of flonicamid and imidacloprid for adult A. gossypii were 2.40 and 1.92 mg l?1, respectively. The lower lethal concentrations of flonicamid were 1.01 mg l?1 (LC30) and 0.29 mg l?1 (LC10), and those of imidacloprid were 0.82 mg l?1 (LC30) and 0.24 mg l?1 (LC10). The developmental period of A. gossypii nymphs at LC30 was 3.6 days for both insecticides, which was shorter than that of the untreated controls (4.2 days). Longevity and total fecundity of A. gossypii adults were decreased at the sublethal concentrations of both insecticides. The lowest net reproductive rate was observed in A. gossypii treated with the LC30 of flonicamid. Feeding behavior analyses using an electrical penetration graph showed that sublethal concentrations of flonicamid and imidacloprid had significant effects on the duration of phloem ingestion. Higher doses of flonicamid induced starvation by inhibiting phloem ingestion, whereas imidacloprid acted as a contact toxin rather than an inhibitor of feeding behavior.  相似文献

Ages, growth and hatch dates of ingressing Brevoortia tyrannus larvae were determined in a 3 year sampling survey at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, U.S.A. To determine if otolith‐aged cohorts had variable relative survival, hatch dates of summer‐caught young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) juveniles collected throughout the Chesapeake Bay were compared with hatch dates of ingressing larvae. Modal total length of ingressing larvae was similar among years: 28 mm in 2005–2006 and 2007–2008, and 30 mm in 2006–2007. Ages of ingressing larvae ranged from 9 to 96 days post hatch (dph); mean ages were similar among years, but significantly older in 2006–2007 (50 dph) than in 2005–2006 (44 dph) and 2007–2008 (46 dph). Larval growth rates differed among years. Earliest growth, when larvae were offshore (0–20 dph), was faster in 2006–2007 (0·62 mm day?1), than in 2005–2006 and 2007–2008 (0·55 mm day?1 in these years). Subsequently, from 30 to 80 dph, growth was slowest in 2006–2007. Hatch dates of ingressing larvae occurred from September to March and 90% (2007–2008) to 98% (2006–2007) had hatched prior to 31 December. In contrast, most surviving YOY juvenile B. tyrannus had hatched in January to February, suggesting selective mortality of early‐hatched individuals, apparently during the overwinter, larval to juvenile transition period.  相似文献

The effect of exposure to different concentrations of food and suspended silt on filtration, respiration and condition were studied in the freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi. Using a milk solids-based food and kaolin to simulate silt, mussels were maintained at different combinations of food and silt concentrations for 3 weeks. Between treatments mean filtration rates ranged from 0.97–1.66 l g–1 h–1, and respiration from 0.50–1.35 mg O2 g–1 h–1. Silt (non-volatile suspended solids up to 35 mg l–1) failed to have a significant effect on filtration rate or condition, but with increasing food levels (volatile suspended solids up to 35 mg l–1) filtration rate was reduced, and condition was reduced at the lowest food concentration (<5 mg l–1). Respiration showed a food × silt interaction between treatment blocks. When food was low respiration increased with increasing silt concentrations, and when silt was low (<5 mg l–1) respiration increased with increasing food concentrations. The observed effects of food and silt on filtration, respiration and condition are discussed in terms of their potential for affecting contaminant bioaccumulation. In low-food situations (i.e., <5 mg l–1), if mussels are pumping large volumes of water, contaminant uptake rates could be enhanced, whereas abundant food would result in lower pumping rates and lower uptake rates. Changes in metabolism with food concentration have implications for contaminant elimination, and changes in biochemical composition associated with changing condition could affect the tissue distribution and retention of contaminants.  相似文献

The effect of 17β‐oestradiol (E2) on the growth of the thymus and its regionalization into cortex and medulla was investigated in juvenile European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax as they find themselves close to sources of oestrogenic pollution whilst residing in their estuarine nursery areas. While the exposure to 2, 20 and 200 ng l?1 in 60 days post‐hatch (dph) fish tended to cause a non‐monotonous dose–response curve with a significant difference of the cortex size between lowest and highest exposures, the exposure to 20 ng l?1 E2 from 90 dph onwards resulted in a distinct enlargement of the cortex. It is probable that the alteration of the cortex size also affects the T‐cell differentiation and proliferation.  相似文献

Low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels often occur during summer in tidal creeks along the southeastern coast of the USA. We analyzed rates of oxygen loss as water-column biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and sediment oxygen flux (SOF) at selected tidal creek sites monthly over a 1-year period. Ancillary physical, chemical and biological data were collected to identify factors related to oxygen loss. BOD5 rates ranged from 0.0 mg l?1 to 7.6 mg l?1 and were correlated positively with organic suspended solids, total suspended solids, chlorophyll a concentrations, temperature, and dissolved oxygen, and negatively with pH and nitrate + nitrite. SOF rates ranged from 0.0 to 9.3 g O2 m?2 d?1, and were positively correlated with temperature, chlorophyll a, and total suspended solids, but negatively with dissolved oxygen. Both forms of oxygen uptake were seasonally dependent, with BOD5 elevated in spring and summer and SOF elevated in summer and fall. Average oxygen loss to sediments was greater and more variable than oxygen loss in the water column. Oxygen deficits at three of five locations were significantly related to BOD5 and SOF, but not at two sites where ground water discharges were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses suggested that BOD5 and SOF responded to somewhat different suites of environmental variables. BOD5 was driven by a set of parameters linked to warm season storm water inputs that stimulated organic seston loads, especially chlorophyll a, while SOF behaved less strongly so. Runoff processes that increase loads of organic material and nutrients and ground water discharges low in dissolved oxygen contribute to occurrences of low dissolved oxygen in tidal creeks.  相似文献

This study was performed to evaluate the effective concentration of the anaesthetic 2‐phenoxyethanol (2‐PE) on juvenile (1.3 ± 0.03 g) meagre (Argyrosomus regius, Asso, 1801) and establish the LC50 (through a series of exposure concentrations) and LT50 of 2‐PE at 20 ± 0.5°C, salinity 38 g × L?1, pH 8.2–8.4 and dissolved oxygen >7 mg × L?1. The induction time decreased and the recovery time increased with increasing concentrations. Conflicting results were found only in recovery time and there were no significant differences among the recovery times from all concentrations. The most suitable concentration of 2‐PE was 0.3 ml × L?1 for about or over 15 min exposure time. The LC50 and LT50 for the 3–60 min exposure periods were estimated for juvenile meagre. The toxic effect of 2‐PE on survival rates of A. regius juveniles increased depending on the exposure period. In addition, 2‐phenoxyethanol LT50 (median survival time) values, slope function (S) and lower and upper 95% confidence limits were estimated.  相似文献

The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献

In order to investigate the feasibility of using ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to prevent the invasive Asian mussel, Limnoperna fortunei, from colonizing components of the cooling systems of industrial and power plants, the mobility and mortality of its larvae were assessed after exposure to different doses of UVC (λ = 254 nm) in laboratory conditions. Total (100%) mortality was achieved with a dose of 149 mJ cm?2 at 23?°C and 103 mJ cm?2 at 25.8?°C. Immediately after exposure, larvae were alive but had reduced mobility. The proportion of active larvae increased after 24 h, but fell again at 48 and 72 h to levels similar to those immediately after exposure. The highest mortality rates were always recorded at the last observation, 72 h after exposure. These results indicate that the larvae of L. fortunei are highly sensitive to UVC, suggesting that UV irradiation has the potential to control fouling by this mussel when the water is relatively clear. However, application of UV-based technologies in plants that use cooling water from water bodies with high loads of suspended solids (eg the Paraná-Uruguay basin, with ca 160 mg l?1 of suspended solids and absorbance values around 0.255) is unlikely to be effective without prior filtration of the water.  相似文献

The present study, conducted in 2012, determined the toxicity of the chlorpyrifos-based pesticide Termifos® and its effects on behaviour and biochemical and haematological parameters in juvenile African catfish Clarias gariepinus. The 96 h LC50, estimated by probit analysis in a semi-static bioassay experiment, was 0.861 mg l-1. Fish were exposed to two sublethal concentrations, one-fifth LC50 = c. 172 µg l-1 and one-tenth LC50 = c. 86 µg l-1, and blood was sampled at 5, 10 and 15 d post-exposure. Fish exposed to 172 µg l-1 Termifos showed significantly lower red blood cell count and haematocrit values, and both sublethal concentrations significantly lowered the white blood cell count. The haemoglobin level did not change significantly at either dosage. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration values were significantly elevated, compared to the control specimens. Glucose concentration showed an ascending trend and a positive correlation with Termifos concentration, whereas protein concentration declined and was negatively correlated with pesticide concentration. Following exposure to the pesticide, the fish showed remarkable behavioural abnormalities including erratic swimming movements, hyperactivity, faster opercular movement, surfacing to gulp air, secretion of copious mucus and loss of balance. Chlorpyrifos should be applied with caution in the environment, especially near water bodies, to avoid the possible ecotoxicological risks associated with its use.  相似文献

A specific landfill leachate that contained 1.036 mgl−1of 2-chlorobiphenyl was used in the study (255 mg l−1 COD and 133 mg l−1 BOD5). Three, 2-l semi-continuous batch reactors (SBRs) were used to simulate the treatment potential of this method on a small scale. Aerobic digestion effectively reduced the leachates COD concentration. Regardless of dilution, the leachates COD reached a <20 mg l−1 equilibrium after 96 h exposure to aerobic digestion, however, increasing the level of dilution accelerated the process. In untreated leachate, the LC50 for Asellus aquaticus was 57% v/v leachate in deionised water and 5% for Gammarus pulex (96 h, static LC50 tests without nutrition and oxygen depleting conditions). After being exposed to aerobic digestion, these values rose to 95% and 40%, respectively. Prolonged exposure to a 1:20 sub-lethal dilution of the aforementioned leachate has been previously shown to affect the breeding colony size of Asellus aquaticus and a 1:66 dilution influenced the fecundity of a Gammarus pulex population. After remediation by aerobic digestion, however, the population dynamics of both test species remained unaltered.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine mollusk distributions in proximity to waste-water treatment plants (WTP's) in the upper Clinch River and to test the tolerance of two mollusk species to monochloramine and unionized ammonia, the major toxicants in domestic effluent. River reaches up to 3.7 km downstream of WTP's were devoid of freshwater mussels (Unionidae), and tolerance to effluents varied among snails, sphaeriid clams, and the asian clam Corbicula fluminea. Residential communities with septic systems had no measurable impact on mollusk assemblages downstream.Laboratory bioassays with glochidia of Villosa iris yielded the following results: 24 h EC50 and LC50 values of 0.042 mg l–1 and 0.084 mg l–1 monochloramine, respectively; and 24 h EC50 and LC50 of 0.237 mg l–1 and 0.284 mg l–1 unionized ammonia, respectively. Glochidia rank among the most sensitive invertebrates in their tolerance to these toxicants. The snail Pleurocera unciale unciale was moderately sensitive, with 96 h LC50 values of 0.252 mg l–1 monochloramine and 0.742 mg l–1 unionized ammonia. Monitoring of monochloramine and unionized ammonia concentrations 0.1 km below WTP outfalls indicated that monochloramine was the toxicant likely inhibiting mollusk recovery below these plants.The Unit is jointly supported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, The Wildlife Management Institute and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  相似文献

Imidacloprid and thiamethoxam are neonicotinoids that have been tested in several Orius species, including Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), but not the variability in their effect among Orius populations of a single species. In this study, the variation in susceptibility to imidacloprid and thiamethoxam in 30 Mediterranean wild populations and four commercial populations of O. laevigatus was investigated in the laboratory using a standard dip bioassay method. Lethal concentration values (LC50) and the mortality of adults at the maximum field rate (MFR) were calculated. The range of LC50 of thiamethoxam was from 0.7 to 5.9 mg l?1, an 8.4‐fold variability, obtaining mortality at MFR (100 mg l?1) of >89.1% in all populations. The baseline obtained a value of 2.1 mg l?1, which is very low compared to the MFR. For imidacloprid, the LC50 varied from 7.7 to 94.7 mg l?1 (12.3‐fold variability). Mortalities at the MFR (150 mg l?1) were 57.7–99.2%, that is, more variable than for thiamethoxam. The LC50 value of the baseline was 48.7 mg l?1, also low compared to the MFR. This variation was exploited to select two populations resistant to thiamethoxam and imidacloprid, respectively. Artificial selection for on average 40 cycles significantly increased the resistance to thiamethoxam (LC50 = 149.1 mg l?1) and imidacloprid (LC50 = 309.9 mg l?1). Mortalities at the MFR in the thiamethoxam‐ and imidacloprid‐resistant populations were 44.5 and 36.9%, respectively. These results demonstrate that resistance can be enhanced in biocontrol agents by artificial selection under laboratory conditions, starting with populations showing no or very low tolerance. Our neonicotinoid‐resistant populations might enhance the wider adoption of biological control by allowing punctual or hotspot applications of neonicotinoids to control several main and secondary pests.  相似文献

Tilapia rendalli was exposed to various siltconcentrationsfor different exposure periods to determine LC50 andsublethalconcentration ranges. The extent of damaging effects, if any,ofsuspended silt on the exposed fish, were investigated by meansofscanning electron microscopy. The LC50 values rangedbetween21 to 24 g l1 and 42–48 g l1 for juveniles andadultsrespectively. The silt concentrations tolerated by the testfisheswere above those found in most natural waters. The resultstherefore support the hypothesis that suspended silt is lethaltofish at concentrations higher than those naturally observed insurface water. The observed mortalities can be attributed tothecombined physical effects of high silt concentrations andassociated reduction in dissolved oxygen levels. To preventfishmortalities and other impacts on biota, anthropogenicactivitiesthat affect the natural variation in suspended siltconcentrationsin surface water should be carefully monitored and, wherepossible,be restricted.  相似文献

Studies on the avoidance behavior of aquatic organisms to contaminants have confirmed that such behavior can be relevant in field situations. However, almost all toxicity tests involve the forced exposure of organisms to toxicants. In particular, despite the importance of Chironomus riparius Meigen larvae in sediment toxicity testing, only a few studies on avoidance behavior have been performed. This study investigated the ability of different life stages of C. riparius, including ovipositing females, first-, second-, and fourth-instar larvae, to avoid copper-contaminated environments. Ovipositing females were given a choice between a control and copper solution (1.3 mg Cu l? 1). First-instar larvae were provided with a choice between a control and a copper (2.0 mg Cu l? 1)-spiked sediment. Both second- and fourth-instars were exposed to a copper gradient (0.38–3.4 mg Cu l? 1) in a flow-through system. None of the life stages avoided copper, even though the highest concentrations caused lethal effects on midges. The avoidance behavior of C. riparius is not a sensitive endpoint to assess copper sublethal toxicity.  相似文献
