Adult males of the North Sea shrimp, Crangon crangon, were maintained for 8 months in the laboratory under natural temperature and light cycles. Successive moults were analysed for morphological changes. Out of the 70 shrimps, one male performed morphological sex reversal by reducing the male characteristics and developing female characteristics. The morphological changes including the loss of the appendix masculina appeared within a single moult cycle. This observation proves that C. crangon males may be capable of changing sex. The low number of sex reversals indicates that C. crangon is a facultative rather than an obligate protandric hermaphrodite.  相似文献

Invertebrates show considerable potential as sentinel organisms for the monitoring of the health status of aquatic systems. They are generally small, abundant, relatively sessile, and may readily bioaccumulate toxins. Cascade-like stress responses can occur following acute or chronic exposures to contaminated environments and as such, the overall health status of individuals within those environments, both in terms of histopathological lesions and the presence of infecting organisms, may ultimately reflect the general health status of these sites. The current study provides baseline multi-organ histopathological data for two common crustacean species, the shore crab (Carcinus maenas) and the brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) collected from six UK estuarine sites. Changes in the metabolic condition of crustaceans from these sites (measured in terms of connective tissue storage cell status) were interpreted in relation to other health measures (including parasite load and the presence of microbial pathogens). The relative ease at which a holistic assessment of health can be made using histopathology and the suitability of these species as environmental sentinels provide support for the inclusion of crustaceans as indicators of aquatic environmental health. Studies linking disease status to burdens of industrial contamination in these environments are now required.  相似文献

In female (non-ovigerous and ovigerous) brown shrimps, Crangon crangon, whole animal lithium levels are about 20% higher than in males, which indicates that lithium has a special function in the female reproductive system. 2. Decreasing lithium levels in larger males suggest that with males a substantial part of the lithium present may be passively absorbed to the exoskeleton. 3. At low temperatures internal lithium concentrations are strongly increased. In response to external salinity the internal lithium concentrations show a typical regulation pattern. The effects of temperature and salinity clarify that lithium must be involved in metabolic processes. 4. Apart from a special function in the reproductive system, lithium can probably replace other ions in their function, e.g. in regulating the activity of enzymatic processes.  相似文献

Shrimp are an important component of the San Francisco Bay biota, both as predators on benthic fauna, and as a food source for predatory fish. Of three common species in the bay, Crangon franciscorum is the most abundant. The bay is predominantly a nursery area for maturing shrimp of this species. During the main reproductive period in the early spring, ovigerous females and planktonic larvae are in most years centered outside the bay in the nearshore ocean, although both are also present in the bay. Juveniles move into both the southern reach and the northern reach shortly after settling, and landward-flowing bottom currents are possibly instrumental in this migration. The seasonal cycle of shrimp abundance in the bay, dominated by this spring immigration of newly settled juveniles, is characterized by a progressive migration of the growing shrimp up the estuary coincident with upstream penetration of higher salinity water during summer. Differences in abundance and distribution between the years 1980, 1981, and 1982 suggest that the level of river discharge and accompanying salinity regime are important controlling factors in the distribution, recruitment levels, and subsequent survival and growth of C. franciscorum in the San Francisco Bay.  相似文献

The sulphide-tolerant brackish water isopod Saduria entomon has haemocyanin with a high affinity for oxygen. Sulphide is oxidized in the hepatopancreas to thiosulphate. Oxygen needed for this oxidation is transported bound to haemocyanin. Thiosulphate was found to improve haemocyanin oxygen affinity in S. entomon. The modulating effect was time and concentration dependent. The effect was greater at higher pH, i.e. the Bohr effect was greater (−1.82) compared to that seen without thiosulphate (−1.36). S. entomon exposed to simultaneous severe hypoxia and sulphide had a low haemolymph pH and the partial pressure of oxygen required to reach 50% saturation was even lower than that measured in vitro. This is ascribed to the combined effects of thiosulphate and lactate as well as unknown co-factors. Thiosulphate had no effect at all in the sulphide and hypoxia non-tolerant natantian Crangon crangon. It is suggested that thiosulphate can be important as a haemocyanin modulator for crustaceans digging in sulphide-rich sediments or constantly exposed to sulphide. Accepted: 11 August 1999  相似文献

Biochemical biomarkers in common estuarine species, such as the brown shrimp Crangon crangon, have the potential to provide early warning of contaminant exposure from field collected samples and through the development of in situ tests. The biomarkers acetylcholinesterase (AChE), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) have been shown to provide evidence of exposure to contaminants in a number of species and field situations. As they may naturally respond to the marked physicochemical changes found in estuaries (thus confounding contaminant-induced effects), this work aims to determine the effects of salinity, temperature and handling stressors on these biomarkers in C. crangon.AChE recovery in field-collected shrimp transplanted to clean laboratory conditions suggests the presence of inhibiting factors at the sampling site (River Minho estuary). Maintenance time in stock tanks had effects that led to the choice of a minimum 15-day maintenance period of C. crangon in the laboratory before subsequent use of the enzymes as effect criterions in toxicity assays. Field levels of biomarker activity were unaffected following field-laboratory transportation of C. crangon, making this factor unlikely to jeopardize detection of contaminant associated effects. LDH levels were significantly lower under conditions that mimic a diurnal salinity fluctuation, increasing under low salinity conditions; this potentially indicates increased energy costs associated with raised osmoregulatory demands. It is recommended that a lower limit to field exposure of in situ tests should be based on salinity. Higher temperatures led to higher AChE activities and this is in agreement with the existing evidence of increases of endogenous AChE levels as a function of temperature (within a certain range). To avoid misinterpretation of biomarker responses, studies such as this are an important contribution to the establishment of reference activity levels against which biomarker changes can be estimated and are therefore essential preliminary steps in the development of in situ bioassays using biomarkers.  相似文献

The phylogeography of Oecophylla smaragdina was studied using the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (Cytb), cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), and nuclear long-wavelength opsin gene (LW Rh). Weaver ants were collected from 35 localities and from one to nine colonies per locality. Neighbor-joining trees inferred from 647 bp of Cytb and 1,026 bp of COI using Oecophylla longinoda as an outgroup indicated that the haplotypes of O. smaragdina were clearly separated into seven groups: group 1 of India excluding West Bengal; group 2 of Bengal, Indochinese Peninsula, Malay Peninsula and Greater Sunda Islands, including Lombok and Sumbawa; group 3 of the Philippines; group 4 of Flores; group 5 of Sulawesi; group 6 of Halmahera; and group 7 of New Guinea and Australia. This grouping was also supported by a strict consensus tree derived from maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood trees. In addition, two haplotypes of LW Rh were found in O. smaragdina: one in group 2 and another in all the other groups. Comparison to haplotypes in other hymenopteran species suggests that group 2 is younger than other groups of O. smaragdina. The clustering of the seven groups was coincident with geological evidence of the distribution of continents, islands, and seas during glacial periods.  相似文献

Using chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) trnL-F sequences, we studied the phylogeographic pattern and demographic history of Chrysanthemum indicum with 81 individuals from 27 populations representing the partial geographic range in China. Fifteen haplotypes were identified based on nucleotide variation. Relatively high levels of haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.783) and low levels of nucleotide diversity (Pi = 0.00521) were detected in C. indicum. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that most of the genetic variation (59.9%, P < 0.001) was partitioned within populations. Genetic differentiation among populations was high (FST = 0.35), suggesting that there is little gene flow among populations. Nested clade analysis showed that 15 haplotypes formed twelve 1-step clades, five 2-step clades and two 3-step clades, with four clades showing significant geographical association. We concluded that contiguous range expansion and restricted gene flow/dispersal but with some long distance dispersal seemed to have shaped the present-day distribution of the haplotypes of C. indicum in China.  相似文献

The widespread common chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) inhabits five of the seven Canary Islands. Sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1002 bp) revealed new insights into the systematics and phylogeography of this taxon. Additionally, a set of microsatellite loci were analyzed to examine the structure of these populations. Our results suggest that a new species of the genus Fringilla is present in the Canary Islands, which comprises at least three subspecies, but with a different distribution to that which has been morphologically accepted. The specimens from Gran Canaria are genetically distinct from those of La Gomera and Tenerife (F. c. canariensis), which suggests the existence of an undescribed taxon. Furthermore, nuclear microsatellite data suggest an ongoing incipient speciation process in this population. This study provides both important conservationist implications and a basis for re-evaluating the taxonomic status of the Canarian Fringilla coelebs populations.  相似文献

European brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) have great commercial value. Recently, an increasing demand for fresh shrimp has led fishermen to land part of their catch alive. In the present study, the effects of various parameters on the post-catch survival of brown shrimp were investigated by housing them in natural seawater and monitoring survival for two weeks. In a first experiment shrimp survival was tested under high population densities at different temperature settings ranging between 8°C and 21°C. A second experiment investigated the effect of a sand layer in the holding tanks when shrimp were housed at low population densities. Finally, the impact of onboard sorting with a rotary sorting riddle on subsequent survival was assessed. A higher survival rate was found at lower water temperatures. The use of a sand substrate did not significantly improve survival but did result in a more even distribution of shrimp across the bottom of the holding tanks. Onboard sorting with a mechanical rotary sorting riddle did not significantly affect the survival of brown shrimp during the first four days of holding although injuries sustained during onboard handling resulted in high mortality at the time of landing.  相似文献

We analyzed sequences of two mitochondrial DNA gene regions (control region and ND2) from 186 specimens obtained from 17 Eurasian localities covering most of the distribution of the common rosefinch to assess phylogeographic structure. Populations possessed a high level of nucleotide diversity relative to many other Palearctic species, suggesting that rosefinch populations are relatively old and possess high effective sizes. Mismatch distributions suggested that many localities experienced past population expansions, which are older than those expected for post-Pleistocene climate warming and reforestation of Eurasia. Our Phi(st) analysis revealed that 12.4% of total genetic variation was distributed among localities owing in part to the existence of three incompletely isolated groups: southwestern (subspecies C. e. kubanensis), northeastern (subspecies C. e. grebnitskii), and northwestern (subspecies C. e. erythrinus and C. e. ferghanensis). The three groups are not reciprocally monophyletic which suggests that they were formed relatively recently. Gene flow among groups is restricted. Coalescence analysis indicated dispersal asymmetry.  相似文献

Summary Evolutionary electrophoretic variation of a NAD-specific aromatic alcohol dehydrogenase, AADH-E, in wheat and goatgrass species is described and discussed in comparison with a NAD-specific alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH-A) and a NADP-dependent AADH-B studied previously. Cultivated tetraploid emmer wheats (T. turgidum s. l.) and hexaploid bread wheats (T. aestivum s. l.) are all fixed for a heterozygous triplet, E0.58/E0.64. The slowest isoenzyme, E0.58, is controlled by a homoeoallelic gene on the chromosome arm 6AL of T. aestivum cv. Chinese Spring and is inherent in all diploid wheats, T. monococcum s. Str., T. boeoticum s. l. and T. urartu. The fastest isoenzyme, E0.64, is presumably controlled by the B- and D-genome homoeoalleles of the bread wheat and is the commonest alloenzyme of diploid goat-grasses, including Ae. speltaides and Ae. tauschii. The tetraploid T. timopheevii s. str. has a particular heterozygous triplet E0.56/E0.71, whereas the hexaploid T. zhukovskyi exhibited polymorphism with electromorphs characteristic of T. timopheevii and T. monococcum. Wild tetraploid wheats, T. dicoccoides and T. araraticum, showed partially homologous intraspecific variation of AADH-E with heterozygous triplets E0.58/E0.64 (the commonest), E0.58/E0.71, E0.45/E0.58, E0.48/E0.58 and E0.56/E0.58 recorded. Polyploid goatgrasses of the D-genome group, excepting Ae. cylindrica, are fixed for the common triplet E0.58/E0.64. Ae. cylindrica and polyploid goatgrasses of the Cu-genome group, excepting Ae. kotschyi, are homozygous for E0.64. Ae. kotschyi is exceptional, showing fixed heterozygosity for both AADH-E and ADH-A with unique triplets E0.56/E0.64 and A0.49/A0.56.  相似文献

Summary Interactions between epiphytes, epiphyte grazers and the filamentous green alga Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kuetzing were explored with smaples from rivers in Montana. Extracts of C. glomerata lowered photosynthetic rates of Nitzschia fonticola Grunow (an epiphytic diatom). Nutrient enrichment showed that C. glomerata from the Madison River was N deficient and its epiphytes were P deficient on 2 dates and N deficient on one date, while no nutrient deficiencies were detected in samples from 3 other rivers; this implies there was little nutrient competition between the epiphytes and C. glomerata. Epiphytes lowered drag on C. glomerata tufts and current velocity inside the tufts, apparently by decreasing the effective surface area. Lower drag may decrease detachment, but lowering current velocity from 8 to 0 cm s-1 resulted in a 100 % decrease in photosynthesis. Light absorption by epiphyte pigments may lower photosynthetic rate of C. glomerata when irradiance is below 200–500 E m-2 s-1, and protect against photoinhibition above this irradiance range. Invertebrate grazers (predominantly Baetis tricaudatus Dodds, Trycorythodes minutus Traver and Brachycentrus occidentalis Banks) at high densities removed 75% of epiphytes and B. occidentalis grazed on C. glomerata. Invertebrates regenerated a mean of 0.16 mol NH inf4 sup+ individual-1 d-1 which could have enhanced growth of downstream C. glomerata. Competition and grazing were not the only interactions in the C. glomerata community, positive (mutualistic) interactions were also important.  相似文献

Crangon franciscorum and Palaemon macrodactylus are carnivorous shrimp in the Sacromento-San Joaquin River Delta. These shrimp prey primarily on the opossum shrimp, Neomysis mercedis. Behavioral and morphological differences result in P. macrodactylus stomachs containing a greater number of prey, on the average, than C. franciscorum. Dietary overlap and similarity were high (>80%) throughout the study. C. franciscorum is generally larger than P. macrodactylus and is able to ingest larger prey. Red deer (n = 149) from eight geographical locations, including the endangered endemic populations from the Tyrrhenian islands (Sardinia and Corsica), were analysed at eight polymorphic microsatellite loci. Two questions were addressed: (1) Is there a founder effect in the Corsican population, which was reintroduced to the island using Sardinian deer after the species’ extinction on Corsica? (2) What is the origin of the Tyrrhenian or Corsican red deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus)? Our results showed signs of a founder effect for the red deer on Corsica in that these deer showed differentiation from the Sardinian population as measured by FST values, assignment tests (with and without a priori definition of populations) and individual-based dendrograms. Genetic variability, however, did not differ significantly between the two populations. With respect to the phylogeography of C. e. corsicanus we found that both deer from North-Africa and Mesola on the Italian mainland were genetically close to the Corsican red deer, but phylogenetic trees based on genetic distances were only poorly supported statistically. Among all populations studied the Mesola red deer showed the lowest distance values from Corsican red deer and yielded allele frequencies that were more similar to those of C. e. corsicanus than were those of North-African red deer. These results are in line with recent palaeontological and archaeozoological findings which suggest that the Corsican red deer is derived from small Italian red deer introduced from the mainland to Sardinia and Corsica during the Late Neolithic and just before the beginning of Classical Antiquity, respectively. They also suggest a possible recent introduction of Tyrrhenian red deer to North-Africa (rather than the other way around), thus accounting for the close genetic relationship (especially based on mitochondrial DNA) that has repeatedly been found between C. e. corsicanus and C. e. barbarus.  相似文献

The utilization of dietary proteins in crustaceans is facilitated by a set of peptide hydrolases which are often dominated by “trypsin-like” serine proteinases. As expected, the North Sea shrimps Crangon crangon and Crangon allmani showed in their midgut glands high proteolytic activities. However, the majority of animals lacked trypsin and chymotrypsin. Conversely, a minority of about 10% of the animals had elevated trypsin activities. The appearance of trypsin was neither related to the mode of feeding nor to the nutritive state of the animals. When present, trypsin was expressed in both species as a single isoform of apparently 20 kDa. The lack of serine proteinases was also confirmed by inhibitor assays. AEBSF, a serine proteinase inhibitor, slightly reduced total proteinase activity by less than 10%. In contrast E 64, a cysteine proteinase inhibitor, caused a reduction of more than 70% of total proteinase activity, indicating that a substantial share of proteolytic activity is caused by cysteine proteinases. Cathepsin L-like proteinases were identified as major cysteine proteinases.A comparison with the eucarid crustaceans Pandalus montagui, Pagurus bernhardus, Cancer pagurus and Euphausia superba showed a similar high level of total proteinase activity in all species. Trypsin, however, varied significantly between species showing lowest activities in Caridea and the highest activity in E. superba. E 64 suppressed total proteinase activity by more than 70% in Crangon species but not in C. pagurus and E. superba. In contrast, the serine proteinase inhibitor AEBSF had only little effect in Caridea but was most effective in P. bernhardus, C. pagurus and E. superba. The results may indicate different traits of food utilization strategies in some eucarid crustaceans. Caridea may express predominantly cysteine proteinase, while in Anomura, Brachyura and Euphausiacea, serine proteinases may prevail.  相似文献

The genus Croomia (Stemonaceae) comprises three herbaceous perennial species that are distributed in temperate-deciduous forests in Southeastern North America (C. pauciflora) and East Asia (C. japonica, C. heterosepala). The two Asian species have abutting ranges in South Japan, but C. japonica also occurs disjunctively on the adjacent Asiatic mainland in East China. In our phylogenetic analysis of Croomia, based on chloroplast (cp) DNA sequence variation of the trnL-F region, and rooted with Stemona spp., the two Asian species are identified as sister that likely diverged in the Mid-to-Late Pleistocene (0.84–0.13 mya), whereas the divergence of C. pauciflora dates back to the Late Plio-/Pleistocene (<2.6 mya). Phylogeographical analysis of the two East Asian species detected seven cpDNA (trnL-F) haplotypes across 16 populations surveyed, and all of those were fixed for a particular cpDNA haplotype (HE = 0.0, GST = 1). A survey of inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) markers also detected remarkably low levels of within-population diversity (C. japonica: HE = 0.085; C. heterosepala: HE = 0.125), and high levels of inter-population differentiation (C. japonica: ΦST = 0.736; C. heterosepala: ΦST = 0.550), at least partly due to pronounced regional genetic substructure within both species. Non-overlapping distributions of cpDNA haplotypes and strong genetic (cpDNA/ISSR) differentiation among populations and/or regions accord with findings of a nested clade analysis, which inferred allopatric fragmentation as the major process influencing the spatial haplotype distribution of the two species. Based on mismatch distribution analysis and neutrality tests, we do not find evidence of population expansion in both species. Overall, we conclude that components of temperate-deciduous forest types in South Japan and East China are particularly sensitive to range fragmentation, isolation, and enhanced (incipient) species formation through climate-induced expansions of other forest types over glacial and interglacial periods of the (Late) Quaternary.  相似文献

We used a phylogeographic approach to elucidate the evolutionary history of a lineage of frogs, known as Pristimantis (formerly Eleutherodactylus) ridens (Anura: Brachycephalidae), restricted to the wet forests occurring along the Caribbean versant of isthmian Central America as well as the disjunct wet forest on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica. We placed our phylogeographic study of P. ridens within a larger molecular phylogenetic analysis of Central American Pristimantis. All phylogenetic inferences were based on a 1455 base pair fragment of mitochondrial DNA, containing the complete ND2 gene and five flanking tRNA genes. Our reconstruction of the intraspecific phylogeny of P. ridens yielded a basal trichotomy dating to an estimated 12+ million years ago (Ma), consisting of central Panama, western Panama, and Costa Rica plus Honduras. Thus, the presence of P. ridens appears to predate the completion of the Isthmus 3.1Ma. Using a parametric bootstrap (SOWH) test, we evaluated four a priori zoogeographic hypotheses for the origin and spread of P. ridens. This analysis suggested that the P. ridens populations on the Caribbean versant of Costa Rica were established by Pacific versant ancestors only recently, in contrast to the very old lineages found in Panama. Our results support a model of Miocene colonization, long-term geographic stasis, followed by rapid dispersal across the Caribbean lowlands during the Pliocene or Pleistocene.  相似文献
