Geothermal heat fluxes into the deepest waters of four caldera lakes were measured. Temperature profiles within the stratification period between July and November 2007 allowed a quantification of the acquired heat. Due to their enormous depth, heat input from the lake bed was locally separated from heat fluxes at the surface. In conclusion, a direct measurement of geothermal heat input could be accomplished. Although enhanced geothermal activity could be suspected in all cases, two lakes showed a geothermal heat flux of 0.29 or 0.27 W/m2 (Lake Shikotsu and Lake Tazawa), as found in other regions not affected by volcanism, while both other lakes (Lake Kuttara and Lake Towada) showed a greatly enhanced heat input of 1 or 18.6 W/m2, respectively. In conclusion, within our investigated set, all lakes acquired more heat from the underground than the continental heat flux average. Hence, the heat flux into the lakes from the ground was not dominated by the temperature gradient implied by the inner heat of the earth. Other effects like the general temperature difference of deep lake water and the groundwater or local sources of heat in the underground deliver more important contributions. Obviously the flow of water in the underground can play a decisive role in the heat transport into the deep waters of lakes.  相似文献

The geographical distribution, morphometry and water quality of lakes within large calderas (> 2 km in diameter) were evaluated through a review of the literature and maps. Eighty-eight lakes in 75 calderas were located in 31 volcanic subregions. As a group, the lakes varied greatly in elevation, surface area, maximum depth, and shoreline development. The average surface area was 16.9 km2, surface elevation 873 m, depth 151.1 m, and shoreline development 1.35. Water quality ranged from ultraoligotrophic to highly eutrophic. None of the lakes had an inlet that originated outside the calderas. Most lakes did not have a surface outlet, were circular or subcircular in shape, and covered only parts of the caldera basins. Water clarity in some lakes was among the highest recorded for freshwater systems, but there are indications of possible declining clarity in some cases. Secondary volcanic activity, such as primary (hydrothermal) water and eruptions, has been associated with deteriorated water quality conditions in some lakes.  相似文献

Analyses of the oligochaete fauna of two of the deepest lakes in Scandinavia — the Norwegian lakes Mjösa (450 m) and Tyrifjorden (295 m), revealed a totally different species composition in the deep profundal compared with the upper profundal - in contact with the nutrient-enriched epilimnion. In both lakes a pronounced thermal stratification develops in the summer, thus the epilimnion receiving gross organic pollution behaves differently from the profundal. The lakes are each effectively divided into two bodies of water with limited water exchange between them, i.e. one major oligotrophic body and one minor more nutrient-rich. Since the 1950s both lakes have been exposed to heavy pollution of various kinds. In Lake Mjösa in 1975 and 1976 unpleasant algal blooms of the blue-green alga Oscillatoria bornetii fa. tenuis occurred. Bottom samples obtained at the same time revealed that the deep central bottoms of the lake were totally dominated by oligotrophic oligochaete indicators, i.e. by Stylodrilus heringianus and Spirosperma ferox, while the fauna of the upper profundal in the vicinity of domestic and agricultural sewage outfalls, wood processing industries, etc. was dominated by Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Tubifex tubifex in great abundance, indicating enriched conditions. Several other species indicative of eutrophy, were absent, most of them belonging to the genus Potamothrix. A fairly similar situation exists in Lake Tyrifjorden, where, for instance, in the shallow bay of Steinsfjorden — heavily eutrophied by agricultural wastes — blooms of blue-green algae have caused problems from time to time. The same oligochaete communities as in Lake Mjösa distinguish the central oligotrophic bottoms from the regionally more enriched upper profundal. The likely reasons for an intact profundal oligochaete fauna are great volumes of oxygen-rich hypolimnic water of low temperature and a high bottom/lake surface area ratio.  相似文献

We examined the photosynthetic activity of the phytoplankton community collected from the surface to a depth of 1000m in the south basin of Lake Baikal. Experiments were conducted in June (mixing period) and August (stratified period). The carbon fixation rate was measured by the use of a 13C tracer after the incubation of samples under light conditions in the upper water column. Photosynthetic fixation of 13C was detected for samples collected from a depth of 500m, indicating the viability of phytoplankton in deep water. The community composition was dominated by Bacillariophyceae in deep water. The finding of lower activity at a depth of 200m than that at a depth of 500m in August suggests that the spring diatom bloom could be a significant source of viable populations at a depth of 500m. Photosynthetic activity was not detected in samples collected at a depth of 1000m.  相似文献

Thirty-four lakes and ponds on north-central Victoria Island (Arctic Canada) were examined in order to characterize the limnological conditions of these unstudied aquatic ecosystems, and to provide baseline data as part of a larger study monitoring future changes in climatically-sensitive high-latitude locations. Similar to several other arctic regions, the lakes and ponds were slightly alkaline (mean pH = 7.65), dilute (mean specific conductance = 96.4 S), and low in nutrients. What distinguished this limnological data set was the ultra-oligotrophic nature of the lakes and ponds, as mean phosphorus (1.3 g l–1) and chlorophyll a (0.4 g l–1) concentrations were amongst the lowest recorded in arctic environments. Also, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations (often <1 mg l–1) were 2–3 times lower than those recorded for ponds at similar latitudes. Principal components analysis (PCA) separated sites primarily along a gradient of DOC and specific conductance, and along a secondary gradient of particulate nitrogen, likely reflecting differences in phyto- and zooplankton biomass. These ultra-oligotrophic lakes and ponds should show a marked response to global warming. As DOC acts as a natural UV radiation screen, the combination of ultra-oligotrophic conditions and low DOC levels suggests that the biota within these sites are representative of those adapted to living in highly stressful environments. Lakes and ponds in this region make ideal monitoring sites, as they should be especially responsive to future environmental changes.  相似文献

Lakes in the limestone region of Jamaica exhibit a range of chemical characteristics that reflect varying inputs from precipitation, surface runoff and groundwater, together with the subsequent evolution of the water within the limnic environment. Detailed spatial and temporal sampling was conducted on one lake, Wallywash Great Pond. Chemical data, together with D/H, 18O/16O, 13C/12C and 87Sr/86Sr ratios confirm that the karstic spring waters entering the lake evolve chemically through degassing, mixing with rainfall and runoff, biogenic decalcification (resulting mainly from bicarbonate assimilation by the high biomass of submerged macrophytes), and evaporation. Modern carbonate sedimentation in Wallywash Great Pond is largely of high-Mg calcite. This is consistent with Mg/Ca molar ratios >2 within much of the lake. However, aragonite forms on the adaxial leaf surfaces of Potamogeton spp. This may be explained either as a result of locally elevated Mg concentrations or a high degree of supersaturation favouring very rapid carbonate precipitation. Two small lakes to the north of Wallywash Great Pond show minor influence of the Na-Cl dominated coastal aquifer, suggesting that coastal lakes are sensitive to variations in the boundary between fresh and brackish groundwater caused by changes in climate or sea level. Their 13C/12C ratios are strongly influenced by biogenic CO2 derived from plant respiration or decay.  相似文献

The effects of cold stratification, light and seed clustering in petri dish on Ottelia alismoides seed germination were investigated. The seeds required light and an extended cold period in order to germinate, but neither treatment alone was effective. Seed germination significantly increased with length of the 4 °C cold stratification period. Freshly collected seeds failed to germinate while a 5-month period at 4 °C yielded 29 ± 9% germination in the light, but none in the dark. Treatment with sodium nitroprusside, a nitric oxide source, failed to promote germination in the light or dark. Seeds of O. alismoides showed an unusual and significant positive response to aggregation. Germination in the light, after 5-month 4 °C cold stratification, was stimulated to almost five-fold in the dishes that were more densely sown with seed (20 seeds versus 200 seeds). Likewise, clustering seeds in dense aggregations stimulated germination significantly. Germination more than quadrupled with an increase from 1 to 50 seeds per cluster (200 seeds per dish), reaching a value of 72 ± 4%. Linear regression analysis shows the correlation between seed cluster density (no. per cluster) and germination rate (%) was highly significant (R2 = 0.85, P = 0.000). The extended cold stratification requirement is probably an over-wintering device. The mechanism of the density-dependent stimulation is unclear.  相似文献

Phylogenetic classifications of plants often do not reflect their ecological functions. In fact, the functional mechanisms of biological communities may be better understood if species are pooled into groups having similar characteristics. The objective of this work is to evaluate, with the use of multivariate methods, classifications based on the morphological and functional characteristics (size and form, mobility, potential mixotrophy, nutrient requirements, presence of gelatinous envelopes) of cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae to explain the seasonal dynamic of the phytoplankton community. The analyses involve data from two deep lakes: Lake Garda, southern Alps, z max = 350 m; biennium 2002–2003) and Lake Stechlin (north-east Germany, z max = 67 m; 1995, 1998 and 2001). In both lakes, the temporal evolution of the phytoplankton communities within individual years followed a regular annual cycle, with the exception of Lake Stechlin in 1998, when an irregular phytoplankton pattern was caused by a sudden mass appearance of Planktothrix rubescens in the spring and summer months, resulting in a collapse of the whole community in autumn. Overall, the temporal developments of the phytoplankton communities obtained on the basis of patterns of the morpho-functional groups appeared highly comparable with those obtained, in the single years, on the basis of the original phytoplankton species matrices. The comparison of the morpho-functional groups of the lakes Garda and Stechlin showed important differences in the abundance and seasonality of the dominant phytoplankton types. The results obtained in this study underline that the use of classifications based on the adaptive strategies of the single species may represent a useful tool to investigate the community evolution and to compare phytoplankton assemblages of different lakes, overcoming problems related to possible differences of taxonomic accuracy and identification.  相似文献

Comparative studies on the limnology, species diversity and standing stock biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton in five freshwater lakes, Naivasha and Oloidien, Ruiru, Masinga and Nairobi reservoirs, were undertaken. Phytoplankton chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen and temperature were also measured. Thermocyclops oblongatus (Copepoda) was dominant in all the lakes. Ceriodaphnia cornuta and Diaphanosoma excisum (Cladocera) dominated in lakes Naivasha and Oloiden, whereas in Ruiru, Masinga and Nairobi reservoirs, Brachionus angularis and Hexarthra mira (Rotifera) were the dominant zooplankters. Phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll a was lowest in Ruiru dam 5.64 ± 4.0 µg l-1 and highest in the eutrophic Nairobi dam 71.5 ± 12.02 µg l-1. The endorheic lakes Naivasha and Oloidien showed medium values of 24.5 ± 4.0 µg l-1.  相似文献

Summary Two major lake periods were discovered in the sand sea of An Nafud and the surrounding areas. In Upper Pleistocene large lakes occurred around the dune area and in the interior of the sand sea. Their deposits were formed between 34 000 and 24 000 BP. The lakes were not conformous to the present dune relief. They had an extension of several km2 and a depth of ca. 10 m. Holocene lakes (8 400–5 400 BP) were of minor extension and restricted to the interdune depressions. Lake sediments consist of cemented sand, calcareous crusts and diatomites. Upper Pleistocene lakes were fresh water lakes, the Halocene lakes were mostly swamps depending on rising and falling aquifers in the dunes. Plant remains as pollen and macro rests show that the environmental changes didn't exceed the system of semidesert comparable to the modern plant cover. However, the Upper Pleistocene lake deposits contain some more soudanian elements as the Holocene sediments in the pollen spectra. Climatically the lake formations are interpreted as depending on a stronger influence of the mediterranean cyclones or an interaction of them with monsoonal air masses.  相似文献

【背景】地下深部存在一个生物圈,深部沉积岩、玄武岩、花岗岩和变质岩等岩性环境的微生物群落已被调查,而地下深部碳酸盐岩岩溶-裂隙热储层微生物群落特征仍然不清。硫酸盐还原菌(sulfate-reducing bacteria,SRB)是地下深部频繁检出的微生物。【目的】建立快速准确定量深部热水硫酸盐还原菌的微滴数字PCR (droplet digital PCR,ddPCR)技术。【方法】以SRB的功能基因dsrB为检测目标,优化SRB ddPCR技术的退火温度,考察其线性范围、敏感性、重复性和特异性,并将该技术用于实际样品的检测。【结果】SRB ddPCR技术的最佳退火温度为54 °C,检测的线性范围为1.1×100?1.1×105 copies/μL-DNA,相关系数R2为0.996,检出限为1 copy/μL-DNA,重复性的相对标准差优于9%,对3种非SRB人工构建的质粒均没有扩增,显示该技术具有很好的线性关系、敏感性、重复性和特异性。利用该技术对冀中地热区深部热水、浅层水和土壤样品进行了检测,平均含量分别为(4.0±8.4)×103 copies/mL、(1.6±3.5)×102 copies/mL和(1.5±1.2)×103 copies/g-dw。与浅层水和土壤相比,深部热水富含SRB菌。【结论】为了提高地下深部生物圈认识和合理开发利用深部热水,建立了一种快速、灵敏、准确的SRB ddPCR检测技术,同时为其他指示菌检测技术的建立提供了参考。  相似文献

Priest Pot is an example of the abundant ponds that, collectively, contribute crucially to species diversity. Despite extensive biological study, little has been reported about the physical framework that supports its ecological richness. This article elucidates the physical character of Priest Pot’s water column and thus that of similar water bodies. Vertical thermal microstructure profiles were recorded during summer 2003 and analyzed alongside concurrent meteorological data. During summer stratification, the thermal structure appeared to be dominated by surface heat fluxes. Surface wind stress, limited by sheltering vegetation, caused turbulent overturns once a surface mixed layer was present but appeared to contribute little to setting up the thermal structure. Variations in full-depth mean stratification occurred predominantly over seasonal and ∼5-day time scales, the passage of atmospheric pressure systems being posited as the cause of the latter. In the uppermost ∼0.5 m, where the stratification varied at subdaily time scales, turbulence was active (sensu Ivey and Imberger 1991) when this layer was mixed, with dissipation values ε ∼ 10−8 m2 s−3 and vertical diffusivity KZ = 10−4 — 10−6 m2 s−1. Where the water column was stratified, turbulence was strongly damped by both buoyancy and viscosity, and KZ was an order of magnitude smaller. Vertical transport in the mixed layer occurred via many small overturns (Thorpe scale r.m.s. and maximum values were typically 0.02 m and 0.10 m, respectively), and seston were fully mixed through the water column.  相似文献

In Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, the water of lakes and rivers showed high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, 5-50mgC/l. There was a clear relationship between DOC concentration and pH. DOC also contributed to low water transparency in the studied lakes. Water colors measured by spectrophotometer showed a strong relationship with DOC concentration, indicating high applicability of water color measurement for estimation of DOC. The development of a simple but quick estimation of DOC will contribute to understanding the seasonal dynamics of DOC, which might regulate both abiotic and biotic conditions in aquatic ecosystems in this area.  相似文献

We sampled zooplankton communities from 54 small water bodies distributed throughout Wisconsin to evaluate whether a snap-shot of zooplankton community structure during early spring could be used for the purpose of differentiating lakes from wetlands. We collected a single set of zooplankton and water chemistry data during a one-month time window (synchronized from south to north across the state) from an open water site in each basin as a means to minimize and standardize sampling effort and to minimize cascading effects arising from predator–prey interactions with resident and immigrant aquatic insect communities. We identified 53 taxa of zooplankton from 54 sites sampled across Wisconsin. There was an average of 6.83 taxa per site. The zooplankton species were distributed with a great deal of independence. We did not detect significant correlations between number of taxa and geographic region or waterbody size. There was a significant inverse correlation between number of taxa and the concentration of calcium ion, alkalinity and conductivity. One pair of taxa, Lynceus brachyurus and Chaoborus americanus, showed a significant difference in average duration of sites of their respective occurrence. All other pairs of taxa had no significant difference in average latitude, waterbody surface area, total phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, alkalinity, conductivity, calcium ion, sulfate, nitrate, silicate or chloride. Taxa were distributed at random among the sites – there were no statistically significant pairs of taxa occurring together or avoiding each other. Multivariate analysis of zooplankton associations showed no evidence of distinct associations that could be used to distinguish lakes from wetlands. Zooplankton community structure appears to be a poor tool for distinguishing between lakes and wetlands, especially at the relatively large scale of Wisconsin (dimension of about 500 km). The data suggest that a small body of water in Wisconsin could be classified as a wetland if it persists in the spring and summer for only about 4 months, and if it is inhabited by Lynceus brachyurus, Eubranchipus bundyi, and if Chaoborus americanus and Chydorus brevilabris are absent.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to describe and quantify the physical and chemical limnological properties of 46 lakes and ponds on Banks Island, to explore the effects of ecoclimatic differences on the water chemistry of these study sites, and to establish baseline conditions for this previously unexplored limnological region, which could then be used in subsequent long-term environmental monitoring programs. A key finding was that the study sites on Banks Island represented a large nutrient concentration gradient from ultra-oligotrophic to hypereutrophic waters. In general, the study sites were relatively nutrient rich by Arctic standards (i.e. mean total nitrogen (TNmean)=504.2μg/l and mean total phosphorus (TPUmean)=18.0μg/l); concentrations that are amongst the highest of any previous limnological survey from similar latitudes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were also some of the highest reported to date amongst all other Canadian Arctic island limnological surveys. These values reflect the milder climate, concentrated animal life and lushness of Banks Island, as compared to other Canadian Arctic Archipelago islands. Principal components analysis (PCA) separated sites along a conductivity/ionic and elevation gradient on Axis 1 (λ1=0.343), and a metal (Fe, Zn, Al) and alkalinity-related (DIC, pH) gradient on the second axis (λ2=0.187). Canonical variate analysis (CVA) was used to explore the classification of the study sites into Low Arctic, Mid Arctic or High Arctic designations based on their limnological characteristics.  相似文献

Sedimentation rates were estimated in a Central Amazonian Black-water inundation forest. Sediment deposition on the forest ground, remote from the river bed, during an annual flood period, is of the order of 1 to 10 tons per hectare, depending on water depth and duration of flooding. The sediments consisted of fine organic matter, kaolinite, quartz sands and biogenic particles of silica. Their genesis and deposition depend on the interplay between pedogenic, limnological and biological processes. Sediments derive primarily from the materials leached from the soils. Clay soils are the main source of dissolved silica, and the sandy soils are the main sources of organic coumpounds and mineral particles. The physical sedimentation of particles as quartz sand grains only occurs in the upper reaches of the studied river. In the flood plain, the sedimentation is due to the coagulation and deposition of combined mineral particles and humic substances, and to the biological precipitation of the silica leached from the soil by sponges.  相似文献

A handy sampler for collecting water from lakes, rivers and seas is described. The sampler consists of an exchangeable sample tube and a new sample-holding system. The system comprises an upper disk, a lower disk, a pair of arms with a guide pin and a semicircular arm guide with a groove. The water sample collected into the acryl tube is held without flow by a tight tube-closing system. Contamination of the sample by chemical and biological materials from the sample tube is minimized by exchanging the tube with a clean one at each sampling station. This new sampler is light, simple and useful for sampling of water from surface to bottom.  相似文献

Small intermittent rivers play an important role in the limnology of African lakes. The Mwenda River occurs on the southern shore of Lake Kariba. Its flow is governed by the incidence of tropical thunderstorms. During the dry period the river is reduced to a series of turbid pools. Physicochemically the river behaves similarly to a sheltered region of the lake. One river station deviates from the normal pattern because of the insulating effect of a Salvinia mat, and because of its permanent connection with the lake. River flooding flushes both nutrients and major ions into the lake. River phytoplankton populations peak prior to the flushing out of the river. Diatom populations are composed of cosmopolitan tropical taxa.  相似文献

This study documented linkages between lakeshore seepage fluxes, pore water chemistry, and aquatic plants in several lakes of the Adirondack Mountains region of New York, USA. Three replicate stations were set up along each of four different lake shorelines. From June through September 1998 and from snowmelt in April through August 1999, seepage flux was measured with seepage meters. Throughout this time period, lake surface water and pore water chemistry were monitored weekly to biweekly. At each station, leaf tissue chemistry of the water lily Nuphar variegatum was measured once in each year. Sediment chemistry and plant abundance were also measured once in 1998. We found that pore water concentrations of base cations, iron, and zinc were related to the direction, magnitude, and variability of seepage fluxes. Concentrations of base cations, iron, and zinc were both highest and most variable where seepage was low (0 to 50mLm–2h–1) in contrast to being more stable where seepage was highest and variable (–608 to 612mLm–2h–1). Leaf tissue chemistry and plant abundance were also related to seepage patterns. N. variegatum leaves had elevated zinc content at stations with low average discharge. Knowledge of seepage patterns helped to explain spatial patterns of elevated trace metal content in both pore water and plant tissues. Our work suggests that the hydrological process of lakeshore seepage exerts important controls on lakeshore biogeochemistry.  相似文献
