Araucnephia Wygodzinsky & Coscarón is a Neotropical black fly genus in which only one species from Central Chile is known. Another species has now been found in Corrientes province on the eastern side of the Iberá tropical swamps of Argentina, on the western border of the mountainous region of southern Brazil. This new species, A. iberaensis, is herein described and illustrated and information on its bionomics is recorded. It is an interesting species because previous to its discovery no black fly genus or subgenus from Central Chile region has been found in tropical areas, because these two regions are separated by the Monte and Pampas realms. Similarly, no Brazilian genus or subgenus has crossed the Andes mountains to Chile. A comparison with other Neotropical, Nearctic, Ethiopian (Afrotropical) and Australian Prosimuliini (sensu Crosskey & Howard) showed Araucnephia to be a valid taxon most closely related to Araucnephioides (sympatric in Chile). Araucnephia also shows great affinities with Lutzsimulium from Southeast Brazil and Argentina and Paracnephia from South Africa.

The genus Haligena (Halosphaeriales, Ascomycota), with two accepted species, is encountered frequently in marine habitats, especially on wood in temperate regions. Phylogenetic analyses of Haligena elaterophora (type species) and H. salina were undertaken, with partial large subunit ribosomal DNA sequences, to determine their relationships with other closely related genera in the order. The genus was shown to be polyphyletic within the Halosphaeriales with the type species forming a basal clade to the order. Haligena salina constituted a sister clade with weak support of Neptunella longirostris in all analyses. Haligena elaterophora and H. salina differ significantly in the nature of their ascospore appendages: wider, more sticky and strap-like in H. elaterophora and spoon-shaped at the point of attachment; in H. salina they are longer and narrower, finely drawn out filaments. A new genus, Morakotiella, is introduced to accommodate H. salina.

There are over 10,000 species of venomous marine molluscs, the vast majority of these, which are generally referred to as "turrids", are traditionally assigned to a single family, Turridae (Powell 1966). Here, we provide an initial molecular analysis of the type genus of the family, Turris R?ding, 1798, thought to be among the most well characterized groups in the family. We show that the type genus is not monophyletic. We analyzed specimens conventionally assigned to 9 different Turris species using molecular markers, combined with the shell morphology and radular anatomy whenever feasible. The results suggest that species assigned to the genus Turris, provisionally assigned to two different subgenera are not monophyletic. Five previously described species belong to the subgenus Turris (s.s.) R?ding 1798: Turris babylonia, (Linne, 1758), Turris grandis, (J. E. Gray, 1834), Turris dollyae, (Olivera, 1999), Turris normandavidsoni (Olivera, 1999) and Turris spectabilis (Reeve, 1843). With a change in species designation, Turris assyria (formerly T. babylonia1010) is added to a well-defined clade, which is in turn more closely related to Lophiotoma and Gemmula species than to the other five Turris species. We show that these five species conventionally assigned to Turris do not belong in the same subgenus, and form a clade provisionally designated as AnnulaturrisPowell, 1966: Turris annulata, (Reeve, 1843), Turris undosa, (Lamarck, 1816), Turris cristata, (Vera-Peláez, Vega-Luz, and Lozano-Francisco 2000) Turris cryptorrhaphe (G. B. Sowerby, 1825) and Turris nadaensis (Azuma, 1973). Implications of the molecular phylogenetic results and its correlation with radular morphology are discussed.

Cryptaspidiotus barbusano (Lindinger 1908) is an endemic species of the Canary Islands, only known on Apollonias barbujana (Lauraceae), a plant growing in the “Laurisilva” or laurel forest, in several Macaronesian islands. Recently C. barbusano was collected on Heberdenia excelsa (Myrsinaceae), a new host plant and family, in the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The recent collection of C. barbusano gives us the opportunity to redescribe its unusual adult female scale cover. The truncate cone-shaped scale cover and its peculiar reflexed exit tunnel for crawlers, with microscopic details of this rare species, are described and illustrated. The shape of the exit tunnel is discussed and the scale cover is compared with scale covers of several other diaspidid species. Finally, this study shows that C. barbusano is not a pupillarial species as formerly described.

The 16S rRNA gene was amplified, cloned, and sequenced from the blood of two dogs that were experimentally infected with the etiologic agent of canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis. The 16S rRNA sequence was found to be unique when it was compared with the sequences of other members of the genus Ehrlichia. The most closely related species were Ehrlichia canis (98.0% related) and the human ehrlichiosis agent (Ehrlichia chaffeensis) (98.1% related); all other species in the genus were found to be phylogenetically much more distant. Our results, coupled with previous serologic data, provide conclusive evidence that the canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis agent is a new species of the genus Ehrlichia that is related to, but is distinct from, E. canis and all other members of the genus. We propose the name Ehrlichia ewingii sp. nov.; the Stillwater strain is the type strain.

Heligmonoides variabilis n. sp. (Heligmosomoidea, Nippostrongylinae) a parasite of Mus musculus from Madagascar is related to H. afghanus (Tenora, 1969), H. ikeharai Hasegawa, 1990 and H. josephi (Wertheim & Durette-Desset, 1976), all having the dorsal ray divided anterior to the arising of rays 8. H. ikeharai a parasite of Tokudaia muenninki (Muridae) from Japan is the most closely related species with rays 8 arising at mid-length along the dorsal ray. It is differentiated from the new species by very long spicules (almost half of body length) and by the length of the vestibule (almost one millimeter). A new definition of the genus Heligmonoides Baylis, 1928 is proposed with a dichotomic key of the species. The biogeographic distribution and the host spectrum of the genus are described.

Six new species of dobsonflies (Megaloptera: Corydalidae: Corydalinae) from Venezuela are described and illustrated, two in the Neotropical genus Chloronia and four within the New World genus Corydalus. Chloronia contains 15 previously described species. The new species Chloronia gaianii and C. marthae, each from the southern tepui and Andean regions, appear to be most closely related to C. hieroglyphica (Rambur) and C. mirifica Navás, respectively. Corydalus contains 30 previously described species. The new species Corydalus clavijoi, of Andean affinity, appears most closely related to C. tesselatus Stitz; C. crossi, from Auyán-tepuí, might be closely related to C. nubilus Erichson; and both C. hayashii and C. mayri, from westernmost Guayana Shield area and Aracamuni tepuis, respectively, clearly belong in the distinct and monophyletic C. arpi Navás species group. Keys for identification of the Venezuelan species of both genera are provided.

For the genus Anthyllis (Fam. Fabaceae, tribe Loteae), with few exceptions, little information is available on the genetic variation among and within species. This genus contains 20 species distributed throughout Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean basin. The most widespread species is A. vulneraria, and over 30 intraspecies taxa have been identified based on plant morphology. To study the molecular phylogeny of the genus, the sequences of the internal transcribed spacers ITS1 and ITS2 of the nuclear ribosomal DNA of 10 Anthyllis species, including 11 subspecies of A. vulneraria and three subspecies of A. montana, were obtained and analysed together with sequences of five other species of the genus obtained from GenBank. Our results suggest that the genus Anthyllis is not monophyletic and is divided in two main clades: the Anthyllis sensu strictu and the "tetraphylla clade". The former includes most of the Anthyllis species, and the latter includes three annual species more closely related to Lotus. All the taxa were also analysed according to seven chloroplast microsatellites, and these data closely confirm the results obtained with the ITS phylogeny.

Species of the neotropical genus Colignoniu are perennial herbs, subshrubs and lianas from 1 m to c. 15 m tall. The genus ranges from c. 5°N in Colombia to c. 28°S in Argentina and comprises six species. It occurs in the Andean montane rain forest and cloud forest, often in disturbed areas. The flowers are of two types and divide the genus into two sections, viz. Pterocarpae (3 spp) with a 3-lobed perianth, and Colignonia (3 spp) with a 5-lobed perianth. C. pentoptera is described as new. C. biumbellata is reduced to subspecific status under C. parviflora. C. acutifolia , originally described by Heimerl as a variety of C. glomerata , is referred to C. parviflora as a distinct variety of ssp. biumbellata . Several names are reduced to synonymy. The chromosome number 2 n = 34 is recorded for three species (Sect. Colignoniu ) and 2 n= 32 for three species (Sect. Pterocarpae ). The correlation between chromosome numbers and perianth type supports the subdivision of the genus. Considerable morphological variation, correlated with changes in temperature and altitude, was observed in the field and in plants under cultivation. Pollen morphology and relationships to other genera in the Nyctaginaceae are discussed. Colignonia seems most closely related to Mirabilis, Commicarpus, Boerhaaviu , and Pisoniella .

A new, monotypic, genus is proposed for the fish hitherto known as Apistogramma ramirezi Myers & Harry, 1948. It is probably related to Geophagus Heckel and Biotodoma Eigenmann & Kennedy. It differs considerably in behaviour and morphology from other species assigned to the genus Apistogramma Regan, to which it is considered to be not very closely related.

H.trionum与其它六个种的关系较远。

Most of the recognized species of the genus Dionda inhabit drainages of the Gulf of Mexico from central Mexico to central Texas, USA, and have been considered a monophyletic group based on morphological, osteological, and allozyme investigations. Phylogenetic relationships of 15 species of Dionda and 34 species from closely related genera were inferred from one mitochondrial (cytb) and three nuclear gene sequences (S7, Rhodopsin, Rag1) totaling 4487 nucleotides. Separate analyses of all four genes yield congruent phylogenies; however the 15 putative species of Dionda evaluated were never recovered as a monophyletic group when species from nine related genera were included in the analyses. Among the ingroup taxa, one well-supported and highly divergent clade is consistently recognized and consists of six recognized and three undescribed northern species currently recognized in the genus Dionda. These nine species inhabit present or past tributaries of the Rio Grande basin of northern Mexico and southern USA, and were recovered as a basal clade in all analyses. Another large, also strongly supported clade, consisting of seven genera, include five southern recognized species currently in the genus Dionda, forming the sister group to the Codoma clade. These five species comprise the "Southern Dionda clade" and inhabit headwaters of the Pánuco-Tamesí drainage and some adjacent coastal rivers in the Tampico Embayment. The consistent and repeated identification of eight different clades recovered in most of the separate gene analyses strongly supports a division of the non-natural genus Dionda. A new genus, Tampichthys, is proposed for the clade of species endemic to east-central Mexico and formerly in Dionda. Tampichthys and the putative monotypic genus Codoma are more related to Mexican species of the genera Cyprinella and Notropis than to other species referred to Dionda sensu stricto.

HAY, A., 1992. A new Australian genus of Araceae, with notes on generic limits and biogeography of the Areae . A monotypic aroid genus is described from Melville Island, Northern Territory, Australia. The genus is diagnosed in the tribe Areae by its tubular spathe base divided into two chambers by an annular septum. The genus is most closely related to Sauromatum and to some Asiatic, not Australian, species of Typhonium . It is proposed that the geography of the Areae (including Arum, Dracunculus etc.) may now suggest a Gondwanan (rather than Laurasian) and hence Cretaceous (rather than much more recent) origin for the tribe, and its dual arrival in Malesia.

The European species Hypocrea epimyces (Hypocreales, Ascomycota, Fungi) is redescribed based on the holotype including the drawing on its envelope by Saccardo and freshly collected material. The holomorphs of two closely related species, H. alni and H. brunneoviridis, are described as new species of the genus. They are characterized with morphological and molecular methods, including culture studies and phylogenetic analyses with internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 as a part of the ribosomal RNA gene cluster, calmodulin, endochitinase, intron 4 of the translation elongation factor 1-alpha gene, and a part of the RNA polymerase II subunit B gene as phylogenetic markers. All species described here have green ascospores. Although phylogenetically closely related to H. lixii, they form reddish brown instead of green to black stromata. Except for H. brunneoviridis, forming nearly gliocladium-like conidiophores, the anamorphs of these species are similar to each other but vary in the angles of conidiophore branches and phialides, in phenotypic arrangement of conidiation on growth plates and in growth rates of cultures.

A new genus and species of Fagaceae are established for compressed leaves and attached fruits which represent one of the dominant taxa in the rich Miocene Clarkia flora of northern Idaho. The leaf and fruit morphology, cuticular and pericarp anatomy, and leaf phytoliths fall within the range of variation of the subfamily Fagoideae. The unique fruit consists of a large, exposed, distinctly keeled, trigonous nut and a diminutive basal cupule. The cupule has an apical frill of free, petiolate, leaflike appendages but lacks other ornamentation, and there is no evidence of a distinct Valvation. As no other genus of the Fagaceae has fruits with this combination of characters, a new genus is established and is referred to the subfamily Fagoideae. The Miocene genus seems most closely related to the extant genus Fagus.

The marine prasinophycean flagellate presently known as Nephroselmis gilva has been examined, using both the type culture and material from temperate (Denmark, New Zealand) and tropical waters (Thailand). All cell surfaces are covered with unmineralized scales, two types on the body, two on the flagella including flagellar hairs. The detailed structure of the scales is described, using high power electron microscopy of detached positive–stained scales. Previously overlooked organelles within the cell include large numbers of extrusive bodies, a rare type of organelle in chlorophyll–a– and –b–containing organisms, and an eyespot. N. gilva differs profoundly from the type species of Nephroselmis , and is transferred to the new genus Mamiella. Mamiella gilva is closely related to Mantoniella squamata. Together with the genus Dolichomastix they form the new family, Mamiellaceae, a small group of marine flagellates of worldwide distribution.
The members of the new family probably represent the most primitive extant prasinophytes. When compared with other members of the class, its species stand out, particularly by the lack of small square or diamond–shaped scales on the flagella and cell body. It is suggested that the Mamiellaceae should be referred to a separate order, Mamiellales.
